Book Description

Series of erotic short stories focusing on the pleasures of sight, sense and sound of the ecstasies of love.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love's Passion.......2004-10-10

EROTIC ANTHOLOGY is a very engaging duo of love stories with highly charged eroticism. Though graphic in nature, these stories are about a lot more than sex.

The first story, Flame, is about Samara Templeton, a sensuous and sophisticated accountant who does reviews for a women's magazine. When she does an adverse review on author Devlin Devoe's novel, he takes it personally and decides to confront her about it. When he meets the tantalizing object of his ire, a spark ignites between the two that turns into a conflagration that threatens to consume them both.

The second installment, Discovering Ava, tells the story of Jillian Walters, an author of erotica who hides her smoldering passions behind the dour facade of a prudish, efficient secretary. When Gavin, her gorgeous hunk of a boss whom she has secretly desired for five years, accidentally discovers one of her sizzling manuscripts, he is overcome with curiosity. He follows her to a night club, where he gives in to a voyeuristic urge and ends up viewing her sexual prowess first hand. Now Gavin is determined to have this sexy siren for himself.

EROTIC ANTHOLOGY is not your typical book of erotic stories as the title seems to suggest. It is actually two very well written love stories with enticing plots and personable characters, plus the added bonus of steamy sex scenes. Lovers of romantic eroticism will find this book is well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Does humanity, pushed to the limits of perfection, find satisfaction? Not really........2006-10-22

Silverberg hits his stride around the mid-'60s and themes eventually emerge. "Flies" is about a man granted a measure of omnipotence and the not-so-nice results. In "Passengers" an alien occupation takes the form of intermittent takeovers of human bodies wherein the aliens usually party hard with their borrowed vessels (kind of the ultimate drunken blackout). Soon there's the repeated trope of human attainment of immortality in "Sailing to Byzantium", "Born with the Dead", "Capricorn Games", etc. These stories concern people out at the limits of human power, or sometimes powerlessness.

Where does this stuff fit in in the universe of sci-fi works? Well, to use a very basic taxonomy: Telepathy and time travel? Check. Aliens? Quite a few, but around the margins and rarely as characters. Spaceships? As needed. But robots? Computers? Not so much. It's more about yearning and transcendence than about technology or society or especially plausible futures. For all the themes of human perfectability, the point of view is usually that of a confused, overwhelmed, and/or manipulated protagonist, and in the end most here is about the feelings of smallness and inadequacy, or the limitedness of human existence. However, there is definitely a lot of feeling-- you may get a little misty when the wistful melancholy of loss and uncertainty really hits. Lovers in these stories have very romantic barriers to overcome. There's vivid language and often very vivid, dazzling settings (the "ancient" cities of "Nightwings", "Saling to Byzantium", etc.)-- you can tell Silverberg worked hard! (Especially since he mentions it a lot in the introductions.)

So it's a decent soft-headed mystery-of-man's-place-in-the-universe sort of science fiction. Not as deep as it might seem, but often very unique, heartfelt, and well-written. If you can humor the occasional over-seriousness, quite entertaining. And actually there are a few good lighter yarns. I had never read any Silverberg before, but this volume feels pretty comprehensive-- a good place to start and to end too, probably. I'd guess it would be most suitable for harder-core crate-digging sci-fi fans. I suppose I am one, but I found it worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best science fiction writers of all time...........2005-03-22

Robert Silverberg is one of my favorite authors. He is also one of the most honored in the history of science fiction, having won 5 Hugos and 5 Nebula awards during his fifty year career. He's probably written nearly one hundred science fiction books, but this collection of short stories is a great place to start.

The introductions in this book are quite amusing and informative, describing his relationships with such figures as Frederik Pohl (who played an important role in his career). But beware! A few of these introductions contain spoilers for the stories that follow. I would suggest that you read the story first, and then the introduction.

The stories from the 1950s are good, but it's in the 60s that Silverberg really hits his stride. The classic story To See the Invisible Man (adapted for an episode of The Twilight Zone in the 1980s) is as fresh as if it had been written yesterday. One of the stories from the 1960s, Flies, is somewhat unpleasant, although it contains important philosophical themes. I think it could be skipped.

You might start out your reading with Sundance, which is considered by many to be among the top ten or twenty science fiction short stories of all time. Other equally great classics include the novellas Nightwings, Born with the Dead, and Sailing to Byzantium.

This book is a bargain at the price, giving you 600 pages of great science fiction. More information about the author can be found at www.majipoor.com, and there's an Yahoo online chat group at theworldsofrobertsilverberg where once in a while the author himself drops by.

If you like science fiction at all (and even if you don't) you owe it to yourself to buy this fine collection by one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Superb retrospective collection........2004-09-29

Robert Silverberg's latest collection, Phases of the Moon: Stories from Six Decades is about as good as it gets - and about as definitive as you can get in one volume. It's got some great stories in here, like "Passengers," "Schwartz Between the Galaxies," "Sailing to Byzantium," and "Good News from the Vatican," and a lot of others that I've unfortunately never read before. The man was very prolific; even with only four or five stories from each decade, the book is 622 pages, all told.

He is fairly prolific at introductions, as well, one might add; he's added an overall introduction to the volume as a whole, an introduction to each individual decade, and an introduction to each individual story. Let it be said that Robert Silverberg likes introductions.

Abraham -- called out of Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan, there to found a great nation, a blessing to all peoples. Isaac -- his son, taken to be sacrificed by his father, until God provided a substitue.Jacob -- Isaac's son, the schemer who cheated his older brother of his birthright but whose thigh (and heart) was broken as he wrestled all night with God's messenger.Joseph -- the dreamer sold into Egypt by his brothers, who meant it for evil while God meant it for good. What message from them does God have for us today?Joyce Baldwin skillfully weaves her answers to these questions, bringing the history of an ancient people to bear on our lives.

I've read some of the other commentaries in this series and they generally make good devotional commentaries, but this one was disappointing. The author does not provide much in the way of insight or application beyond what you can read in the text of Genesis 12-50 itself.

From My Château Kitchen revolves around three subjects: the author's life in the 17th-century Burgundian château she and her husband own; the work of the farmers, vintners, restaurateurs, and others who live in the area and define its spirit; and Burgundian food, the glorious regional plats that represent a time-honored yet ever-evolving cuisine. Anne Willan, founder and president of La Varenne cooking school (now headquartered at the château), skillfully weaves these strands into a romantic but down-to-earth memoir. With more than 300 color photos and 160 adroitly selected recipes, the book offers both armchair excitement and practical kitchen direction. Those drawn to French regional cooking and the life that anchors it will embrace the book.

In chapters such as "The Adventure Begins," "On Burgundian Tables," and "The Wider Scene," Willan comes, sees, and is conquered--repeatedly. Best of all are her shrewdly drawn human portraits. We meet, among others, the château gardener who picks vegetables only at maximum size, a blacksmith who guards his homemade ratafia in a cathedral cellar, and a father-son pair who operate a traveling cider press. Willan's recipes--all meticulously written--accompany the discussions. Traditional Beef Bourguignon (a definitive formula), Warm Wild Mushroom Mousse, Madame Milbert's Rabbit Terrine, and Apple Gâteau Le Fey are just some of the dishes that illustrate a time, place, or person. Closing with a chapter that presents the château wedding of Willan's daughter (and includes the wedding cake recipe), the book comes full circle; it returns readers to a beginning and reminds them that food, which is the life of the Burgundian land, is without break, beginning or end. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

The kitchen of the title is in a 17th-century chateau called Le Fey, high on a hill in Burgundy. From this vantage point, Anne Willan -- long known as an authority on French regional cuisine, on food history, and on classic French cooking -- has written a personal book, elegantly interweaving chapters on her life in the chateau with journeys out into the surrounding landscape. She examines the work of the people of Chateau du Fey and its surrounding quarters: the gardeners, farmers, vintners, and restaurateurs who live and breathe French cuisine, and who contribute to the character and flavors of the Burgundian table.

Foremost in the cast of characters in Anne Willan From My Chateau Kitchen is M. Milbert, gardien and gardener, who will pick no vegetable before its time. But there is also Claude the water man, who looks after pipes and plumbing for both village and chateau, and who figures prominently in the group of local hunters who follow the age-old rules of la chasse. We are introduced to M. Simon, the blacksmith with a network of cellars under a nearby cathedral, where he makes ratafia. And M. Haumonte teaches traditional bread and croissant making using the chateau's wood-fired oven. There is the lady from Morvan who makes 500 varieties of jam, the beekeeper, and the father and son with the traveling cider press. Anne Willan takes us through the countryside, to markets in Sens, to the makers of mustard and spice bread in Dijon, to Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, where Leslie Caron presides over an establishment serving Burgundian fare, and to Joigny, where Lorain father and son reign in 3-star splendor.

Anne has chosen to share recipes for the dishes she cooks and eats at home, including such classics as Leek Quiche, Oeufs en Meurette, and Jambon Chablisien. There are also recipes that cope with the garden's staggering bounty, such as Spiced Red Currant Jelly and Gratin of Summer Vegetables in Herb Pesto. Other recipes are brought by the chefs who cook at the La Varenne school -- including Snail and Mushroom Ravioli with Parsley Sauce and Dried Fig and Marc Ice Cream.

In almost 300 color photographs and with more than 160 recipes, Anne Willan renders an intimate appreciation of both the food and the culture of Burgundy. As this beautiful and personal book proves, Anne Willan has succeeded marvelously in her chosen (and enviable) task of exploring, understanding, and teaching the art of French cuisine as it manifests itself in one of France's most food-oriented provinces. Which just happens to be her back -- and front -- yard.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes and an exquisite read.......2006-06-04

This is the best cookbook I have ever read. What an interesting combination of wonderful recipes and a beautiful travelogue.
I made a small change to the Flammiche recipe (forgive me Anne). I made the bread dough on the dough cycle of my bread machine. It worked wonderfully well and saved a lot of time. Everyone who has tasted the flammiche has raved about the flavour and the wonderful appearance.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite French Countryside Cooking!.......2004-03-19

Exquisite and sumptuous describes both this cookbook and food from it. The layout, accompanying text and color photos are just fabulous, showing the history of Ann and her family moving to the Chateau in the French Burgundy area, and the subsequent game, produce and food products of the area which she utilizes in her cooking, in her cooking school and for these recipes.

Each recipe is given after its introduction into Ann's life, and this is just so unique in the delightful manner that she presents it. Just a sampling of such: Gratin of Potatoes with Bacon and Cream (and Monsieru Milbert's potatoes); Poached Figs with Pistachio Frangipane (and Madame Andrea's discovery of "blindness" in fig trees); Poached Trout in White Wine with Spinach (and her fisherman/carpenter foriend Henri); Goat Cheese Puffs (and their accompanying Chablis from Laroche); Crustades of Red Peppers with Goat Cheese (and The Owl's Loft restaurant); and my favorite=Snails with Anise en Croute (and Chef Claude's hunting them in the woods); Whole Tangerine Souffle (which is how I discovered this wonderful lady, seeing her do this with Martha Stewart).

Will now want to sample some of her other cookbooks which the other reviewers rave about as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Potatoes.......2001-03-01

The creamy potatoes with bacon (near the front of the book) is the best potato dish I have ever eaten. I served it at a dinner party recently and the comment was: "awesome". Also, recently I had the twice baked spinach omelet except mine was made with gruyere cheese only, no spinach. It was cooked one day and re-cooked the next. It was fabulous and it is great to know that it can be made ahead. I love Anne Willan!!

    5 out of 5 stars A must have!!!.......2001-02-12

This book is a great example of why the Internet recipe sites will never replace cookbooks. Nowhere can you find such beautiful pictures, and wonderful recipes as this book. Ms. Willan has written a meticulously researched cookbook that is just as much at home on the coffee table as it is on the kitchen counter.

I must respectfully disagree with a previous reviewers comments. The "Gateau le Feÿ" does work exactly as written. I've created this beautiful dish a couple of times now with no problem. I could see how this might not turn out if your oven temperature is incorrect, so it might be a good idea to test your oven with an oven thermometer prior to starting this dish. As for the point to wait until they do a new printing with corrections, it should be noted that if there were corrections to be made, you'd think that Ms Willan would have done so when she appeared on Martha Stewart the first week of February 2001, and made this dish, just as it is written.

4 out of 5 stars Traditional beef bourguignon.......2001-01-02

Served traditional beef bourguignon to 16 people for New Year's Eve dinner last night using the recipe on pages 26-27 of this book.

The recipe is a bit complicated because of all the separations (liquid, meat, vegetables), and you definitely need to plan in advance, but the results were superb. None of our guests had ever had this dish with as much flavor as this version, so it was a big success.

I used top sirloin, marinated in an inexpensive Cotes du Rhone for two days (yes - two days), browned the beef (big job since I just about doubled the recipe) one evening, and then simmered it in the oven at 300 degrees F the next morning. After letting it cool a bit, I put it in the refrigerator for two days (yes - two days), and then reheated it before our guests arrived.

Did I mention the flavor was wonderful? And since I made a ton of it, we'll be able to have it now and again as we take frozen portions out of the freezer.

Be sure to make lots - if a recipe is as time-consuming as this is to make, you'll want to have a lot of it that you can later just warm up if you want to.

        Book Description

Christopher Radko's line of exquisite holiday ornaments began in 1983 when his family's Christmas tree toppled over, destroying their collection of hand-made, mouth-blown ornaments. Christopher felt responsible, since he had recommended that the old Christmas tree stand be replaced with a more modern device. Christopher declared it his personal quest to restore the heirloom collection - and the link to precious Christmas memories. And that's just what he's done. His unparalleled succes has led to: The marketing of Radko ornaments in over 3,000 locations; The opening of 2 Signature Stores devoted exclusively to his products; The designation of over 100 premier Galaxy, Starlight and Rising Star Stores dedicated to carrying his ornaments for every season and holiday of the year; Placement in prestigious accounts such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, Jacobson's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, Marshall Field's and Harrods of London; Featured spreads in such high-profile publications as People, Biography, and the New York Times. Memories Of Yesteryear highlights Radko's magical Christmas ornaments with over 20 original holiday poems. Reflecting Christopher's philosophy that "Christmas is no time for restraint," the book is decorated throughout with metallic foil and glittering detail.

It's hard to imagine a more comfortable, all-purpose garment than the sweatshirt, but the item is hardly a positive fashion statement--until now. More Sweatshirts with Style shows a multitude of ways to morph the lowly exercise-wear into attractive, colorful, and still very comfortable clothing. By altering or replacing collars and cuffs; adding yokes, pockets, hem extensions, and sleeve trims; embellishing with applique, embroidery, buttons, zippers, and trims; or even completely changing the pullover style into a cardigan design, the humble sweatshirt becomes a unique and stylish wearable. Each of the 45 ideas is clearly explained in step-by-step instructions and line-art diagrams, and illustrated with a color photo of the finished product. Whether you have a drawer full of plain sweats begging for some help, or you generally avoid them altogether because they seemed too ordinary or shapeless for your wardrobe, you'll find many fun ways to transform both your sweatshirts and your attitude towards them. --Amy Handy

          Book Description

Jasper Morrison's name is not associated with spectacular consumer design products. Instead, he has chosen to align himself from the start with an approach that designers often return to after careers spent otherwise: simple and durable forms that remain functional and true to their materials, and retain an unmistakable and exciting modern formal language. His success in the European design landscape over the past decade is without parallel, perhaps because his first furniture and interior designs appeared at a time when the overwhelming nature of flashy décor had become underwhelming. Arguing against "Uselessism" and for "Utilism," Morrison equates the decorative content of a design with a lack of understanding of design's utilitarian purpose. Likewise, he continues to apply himself to doorhandles and doors, bottles of beer and busstops, regarding no aspect of daily life as unworthy of consideration as a design problem. Everything But the Walls provides a much needed survey of Morrison's working methods and their results, as well as an exploration of the sources of his inspirations and ideas.

Design is not done with rules, but with intuition. Intuition never lies. --Jasper Morrison

            Book Description

There are a number of books out there about Adobe Acrobat and PDF, but none focuses entirely on PDF as it relates to print production—until now. In the high-end print production environment, PDF files must be created for a variety of uses: screen (for soft proofing and correction cycles), print (for digital printing), and press. This book explores the problems, solutions, and techniques specific to using PDF in prepress and print production.

You will learn the history and evolution of PDF and the Adobe Acrobat software family before exploring setup and PostScript basics. However, the meat of this book is in the how-to process, as it offers step-by-step instruction on fixing PDF problems that plague print production facilities, as well as specific procedures for creating print-perfect PDF files using the standard Acrobat software tools.

Additionally, an entire chapter has been devoted to answering common PDF questions taken directly from GATF training programs and seminars. All information in this book has been thoroughly tested in the GATF labs, so you can be assured that it is reliable.
