This first collection of poems unveils the magician's trick: an illusion only works if we believe that what we've just seen is exactly what happened. With a hairsplitting sense of detail and spellbinding language, Joel Brouwer's poems consider characters
Customer Reviews:
Storm the presses, demand new pressing!.......2003-05-29
Joel Brouwer is a wonderful poet, and in EWH it is easy to see why the whole of the first printing has been sold out. This book needs another printing, ...
Brouwer is obviously plenty smart and is very well-read, yet to those of us who wander in and out of the poetry genre, he is most obviously, a craftsman with an approachable, inviting style, and in each poem here, Brouwer is able to speak to any and all readers regardless of experience, age, or place in the poetic world. This is poetry for the people--all people.
If you read ten books of poetry a day, you won't soon forget this one, and if you've never read a poetry book in your life, forget every sterotype you've ever heard, this is a book to bring you in, and start you off on the right foot. The poems in this collection show a writer who is able to see great beauty in the simplicity of the everyday world surrounding us all. And show it to us with a fresh, irreverant, and humanistic eye. You must find this book.
Monsieur Poet Deluxe!.......2001-11-21
Having studied with Tom Lux, I am a big fan of his poetry. Joel Brouwer, who also studied with Lux, is a fan too. However, Brouwer's poetry is not a shadow or copy of Lux's. It has grown with the help of Lux's light, but it is its own garden - overgrown with fantastic weeds and bionic flowers. Brouwer's poetry is also more political than Lux's. It makes me laugh out loud and find hope in a pretty hopeless world. I read Lt. Schrapnel at a Poets for Peace reading and it rolled off my tongue like liquid bullets. Brouwer is my favorite living poet and this book is no exception. Tangibly thin, like a passport, it sure packs a poetic whopper of a punch of his wild vision, love of language, heart of goofy gold, and his gut of wit and fire. I can't wait for his next book, CENTURIES. I am not surprised that he just won a prestigious Whiting Prize. He deserves a seat beside Whitman, Berryman, Cummings, Flook, and yes, Lux. BRAVO!
Predictable Workshop humour, moves, flair.......2001-10-01
I won't go as far as to say that Joel Brouer is a bad poet or that many out there won't like this book. Some poeple will love it. People love Tom Lux's work, I like much of Tom Lux's work too. But I really don't see what Brouwer has to offer anyone that Lux hasn't already. And the weight of influence is heavy in these poems.
This is a common problem in first books, but to add to that Brouwer doesn't have Lux's imagination or flair for intricate turns of a phrase. In many poems, such as Steve's Commando Pinball I am left going ...so? A smart annecdote does not a poem make.
Exactly Like Lux.......2001-04-27
This is an interesting book--funny, witty, and entertaining. Brouwer owes a hell of a lot to his mentor, Lux, at Sarah Lawrence though. Many of the poems share the same idea-driven approach to poetry that Lux has mastered. Poems like "Yoctosecond" and "Lt. Shrapnel" are carbon copies of the Lux style. Amazing that a teacher would let his student get away with mimicing his voice like this. Still, if you like Lux's work....
Accessible, lively, thoughtful poetry.......2000-12-19
Joel Brouwer begins this marvelous collection with an epigraph from the Marx Brothers' movie Duck Soup: "Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?" And so the themes of illusion and perception are unleashed in the most appropriate possible way for this poet.
Brouwer's collection is the best book I know of to give to people who say they hate poetry. You can't hate these poems. They manage a brillaint balancing act between light absurdity and deep seriousness, and they do so without obfuscation or abstract verbal cartwheels.
A number of the poems take for their titles (and, I assume, their original inspiration) bizarre or provocative headlines from newspapers, such as this one from the New York Times: "Former Kenyan Parliament Member Arrested for 'Imagining the Death' of President Daniel Arap Moi". The poem plays delightfully with the concept, and touches on the strengths and weakenesses of imagination, then ends with a breathtaking, horrifying return to reality. It is, as so many of these poems, a tour de force.
My personal favorite (for the moment, at least), is one of the last poems, a crazy "Last Request". Here the narrator asks to be buried in something which won't last, and he gives his mourners very specific instructions such as, "You may smoke. Talk quietly/ if you must talk. Be very sad." Where the poem goes from there -- with grace and efficiency, for this is a writer of great technical skill -- is startling, unexpected, and simultaneously beautiful and frightening.
That this is a first book is amazing, for Brouwer is so skilled, so imaginative, and so much fun to read that it is hard to imagine he could get any better with his future work. I'm sure, however, that there are many more surprises and delights in store for us.

Book Description
This omnibus edition brings back into print three classic volumes of stories by Larry Niven and other acclaimed authors, all working within Niven's acclaimed "Magic" universe: THE MAGIC GOES AWAY; THE MAGIC MAY RETURN; and MORE MAGIC. This fantasy realm is the basis for Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's THE BURNING CITY, as well as the forthcoming BURNING TOWER. THE MAGIC GOES AWAY contains twelve stories by Niven; THE MAGIC MAY RETURN contains one story by Niven and contributions by Fred Saberhagen, Dean Ing, Steven Barnes, Mildred Downey Broxon, and Poul Anderson; and MORE MAGIC contains two Niven stories and additional contributions by Bob Shaw, Dian Girard, and legendary author Roger Zelazny.
Customer Reviews:
Variable quality, but engaging "SF-fantasy" from 9 authors.......2007-03-25
Larry Niven fans should be aware that this book features work by nine authors, including Niven himself. He contributes a one-page introduction, "The Magic Goes Away" itself, "Not Long Before The End", and "The Lion In His Attic". There is also "Talisman", a collaboration between Niven and Dian Girard. Of the 358 pages, Niven alone contributes 125 (35 percent); if you include "The Talisman", this rises to 160 pages (45 percent).
For my money, the first two stories stand head and shoulders above the rest (with one exception). "The Magic Goes Away" is more of a novella than a novel, running just 90 pages, but its striking originality makes it linger in your mind. The basic thesis is that magic used to exist, long ago, but that it depended on a natural resource called mana which the magicians of the time depleted, just as we are using up fossil fuels. This simple change to our understanding of the universe allows Niven to construct an elaborate "alternative history" while technically keeping one foot in the domain of science fiction. For instance, we read how Atlantis was preserved by spells woven by its priest-kings, which gave way when Greek invaders killed the priests. The plot concerns how a group of sorcerers join together, in spite of powerful enmity and distrust, to find some new source of mana - without which their longevity spells will lapse, dooming them to immediate death (as they are all hundreds of years old). Their quest involves crossing the ocean on cloud-tops, and planning to steal the last surviving god from its place of rest.
"Not Long Before The End" is a "prequel" to "The Magic Goes Away", giving a full account of a critical incident merely referred to in the earlier story. Although only ten pages long, it has the mixture of excitement and intellectual adventure that characterize Niven's best work. "The Lion In His Attic" is set in a drowned castle, years after the flooding of Atlantis. Two strangers arrive, ostensibly on honeymoon, but actually seeking a magic emerald. They make the mistake of underestimating the "lion" of the title, who is actually a were-sealion. "The Talisman", co-authored with Dian Girard, though perhaps less ambitious and more subtle, paints an equally fascinating picture of magicians, thieves, kings, and soldiers.
The other stories are a mixed bunch, but none of them is less than readable. Fred Saberhagen contributes "Earthshade", an elegant miniature that neatly imports the Greek pantheon into Niven's "magic" universe. Less exalted, earthier and more complicated is Dean Ing's "Manaspill", which deals with how a court magician might use a windfall of mana to further his ambitions. I admit to being rather baffled by Steven Barnes' "...But Fear Itself", with its mystical vision of an enslaved tribe that uses the magical power of its children to wreak a terrible revenge on their oppressors. Poul Anderson is a writer whose books I have alway enjoyed, and "Strength", which he co-wrote with Mildred Downey Broxon, is the sort of post-apocalyptic adventure in which he excels. Shalindra, the widow of a sorcerer, rescues the hunter and practical man Brandek after a shipwreck, and the story develops the tension between her yearning after the old ways of magic and his determination to make a fresh start using simple technology.
Then we come to "The Shadow Of Wings" by Bob Shaw, another fine example of the "magician conspiring against the king" sub-genre. Even King Marcurades, who comes across as a blend of Alexander the Great and Edison, is a pawn in the hands of those who control mana - as long as they do control it, that is. And then, just as the book is nearly finished, we come to the best surprise of all: a fine piece of work by no less an author than Roger Zelazny! The protagonist of "Mana From Heaven" is a sorcerer at the height of his powers, but he is threatened by unknown assailants for reasons he cannot guess. No one has ever been better at telling this kind of story, and Zelazny does not disappoint.
I began by being aggrieved that Niven had written less than half of this book, but the more I read the more I liked it. The other authors (apart from Zelazny) may not quite rise to the levels of which Niven is capable, but they introduce a fascinating variety of points of view and emotional climates. All in all, strongly recommended!
It's about time.......2005-02-07
Larry Niven, primarily known for his hard science fiction, is equally adept at fantasy. "The Magic Goes Away", his masterpiece in this genre, has been out of print for years, and increasingly difficult to obtain. At last, it is available again.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The start of Wolfe's epic. This is a lot more baroque than a standard
fantasy epic, which, given the covers and title you may think this is.
The main character, Severian, carries a great big sword that is used,
basically, for executing people. Not your standard good guy action
hero, by any means. If that is what you are after you will likely find
this obscure and really dull. There is no doubt it does drag a bit, at
times.
Destined to be a classic - for a select audience.......2007-05-28
As readers can readily determine from the other reviews posted here, "The Shadow of the Torturer" (indeed Wolfe's entire tetralogy) is not an easy read. He's not a Cussler or Koontz -- he's up there with Melville, Pound, Faulkner, and Pynchon. (Another reviewer mentioned Hesse.)
Anyone looking for a good put-your-brain-in-neutral "beach read" should look elsewhere. Sophisticated readers willing to invest in a slow and thoughtful reading will very much enjoy the many "aha!" moments, and will revel in the subtle and brilliant prose and the numerous plot lines.
These books demand that you to stop and think, go back and re-read on occasion, and really exercise your brain. They're best read a chapter or two at a time, to give you time to puzzle out the metaphors, recognize the "ancient" devices and technology that pass for magic in Severian's world, and digest the many references to classic literature and mythology. Wolfe does not write fiction for the masses - but he amply rewards readers willing and able to meet him at his level.
Masterpiece.......2006-06-02
This is the start of a series which may cause a probelm for you fans of fantasy: you might not find much afterwards that quite stacks up. The book presents everything you want in a fantasy/sci fi yarn, and delivers much more, the beautiful symbolism and characterization you find in the best 'literarture'. The setting, Earth an enormous distance into the future, is almost an alien place, but somehow entirely believable. The magic, used sparingly and with great effect, is delivered with plausibility, allowing your intellect not to interfere with enjoyment of the effects.
This book IS literature ... it compares to another overlooked masterpiece, the 'Gormenghast' trilogy by Mervyn Peake, with the same lush dreamy gothic atmosphere. Severin the torturer is a wonderful narrator and character, despite (because of?) his ghoulish profession; at times he possesses the subtlest black humour.
I've never read anything quite like it - this is one of those unique artworks you will return to every couple of years, something to immerse yourself in. Everyone I've passed the book onto agrees with me on that, and the series gets better from here. (Book three is my favorite ... things get seriously gripping in that one.)
Five stars - would that I could give it more.
Best Fiction of the past 25 years.......2006-05-13
On another forum I visit someone posted the New York Times list of the best American fiction of the last 25 years. Not surprisingly, none of it was F&SF. So far as that goes, none of the books listed were anything I'd ever be likely to read.
But as I reviewed the books that would make my best of the best list, the top choice is obvious. Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, of which The Shadow of the Torturer is the first volume.
For anyone who enjoys craftsmenship, language, poetry, nuance, and irony, this is a book for you.
I'm astounded at the reviewers who have criticized the books for the very thing I love most about them: the use or archaic, rare, and invented words. Others complain about Wolfe's richness of detail, bemoaning the fact that it leads nowhere. I disagree. Everything ties together - it just requires some patience on the part of the reader to discover that.
This is not just some space opera romance that you can read while soaking in bath salts. This is literature that demands some sophistication from the reader. The New Sun quartet ranks with Dickens, Peake, Dostoevsky, and Hesse. It's not for everyone, but those who appreciate substance over butter popcorn will enjoy it.
My runners-up for best fiction of the last 25 years would probably be Connie Willis' The Doomsday Book and Tim Powers' The Annubis Gate.
Especially for lovers of words (and Latin!).......2005-06-10
What an amazing saga of Earth ("Urth") perhaps millions of years into the future - the sun is weakening, there has been a major glaciation, but somewhere in the southern hemisphere exists a complex civilization, rich in hierarchy and tradition, and still using some of the ancient artefacts whose power source is almost inexhaustible. (In the top of the Matachin Tower - which we realize is actually a spaceship that has not moved for millenia - voices occasionally speak out, in forgotten tongues, to whomever is present, or to the other "towers". . .) But the residues of technology are secondary in interest to the wanderings of Severian, initially an apprentice in the order of Seekers After Truth and Penitence, commonly known as the Guild of the Torturers...
Inside the back cover of my copy, at one of my readings, I listed the dozens of words that Wolfe invents or modifies to suit his needs. . .many based on Latin or Greek, all with a phenomenal rightness to what they identify or - often - suggest. Badelaire, lansquenet, amchasphand, chrisos, orichalk, pinakothek, salpinx, ephor.. . . .And the tricky thing is that every now and then one of them is a real word . . did you recognise lansquenet and salpinx? Wonderful wordcraft.
Do read the four books of the series in order (this is the first). Otherwise you will certainly be confused, especially after Severian's encounter with the alzabo (the hideous animal that feeds on corpses and for a while thereafter posesses some of the dead person's ability and can mimic his/her speech: not a good voice to hear at your door in the middle of the night).

Book Description
The Ringstones of Wisdom (Fusus al-hikam) is one of the most influential and controversial books of Islamic civilization. This relatively brief but far-reaching text covers topics such as creation, prayer, the relationship of God with the world, and the interpretation of dreams. Its author, the thirteenth century Andalusian mystic philosopher Ibn al-Arabi, remains a towering figure both in the intellectual and spiritual life of the Muslim world.
Along with this entirely new translation, Caner Dagli, provides readers with a detailed introduction and running commentary almost equal in length to the text itself. These glosses draw from the centuries-old tradition of commentary upon the Fusus, and are presented in unencumbered philosophical language and supplemented with new material. They explain Ibn al-Arabi's metaphysical ideas, his technical vocabulary, and even the frequently difficult structure of his prose and poetry. As a precise and technically consistent translation of a notoriously difficult work, The Ringstones of Wisdom is an important addition to the study of Sufism and Islamic philosophy. Scholars in the field will find new insights into Ibn al-Arabi's technical terms and aspects of the text which previously have gone unstudied. Those without a previous knowledge of Sufism or Islam will find that the commentary and the clarity of the translation make the book accessible to non-specialists as well.

Simply Sampatico... a great cookbook.......2006-07-05
A favorite of mine. My first introduction to this book was on a trip to Albuquerque many, many years ago. Since then, I have purchased 6 of these books and given 5 as gifts. Great recipes.
One thing that I particularly like about this book, which may be a surprise to some, is that not all the old fashioned *fat* ingredients have not been taken out of the recipes, and the book not entirely updated to reflect low fat "healthy" foods. I like to eat healthy but once in a while a good, old fashioned recipe with the yummy bad ingredients is just plain good. You can easily eliminate fats yourself but I enjoy the authentic recipes. I can modernize them myself.
Love this book.
Great Recipies from New Mexico.......2000-08-03
I purchased this book several years ago from the Jr League of Albuquerque. I am now ordering one for my daughter. It has lots of great regional dishes from New Mexico and lots of other great dishes as well. I collect cook books and this is a great one.

My Favorite Book!.......2004-01-27
At first, I only wanted to see the new figures. But then I looked at the 60s figures and wanted the 40th Anniversary sets. I agree, the "prototypes" were fake but the book was still good. It is the only book I read. A great edition to your collection. Buy and Enjoy!
Fun photos, some fakes.......2002-10-11
This book for some reason includes re-creations of proto-types. How do you recreate a prototype? Sounds like a dumb idea to me. ...I don't know, but I liked the book mostly because of the interesting photos of GI Joes, and the information that it added to what I already know. The parts of the book (like the value guide) which I thought were garbage I just skipped over. There are lots of entertaining photos in the book, and interesting information too. Is it some kind of Collector's Bible for GI Joe? No, I don't think so.
Be Very, Very Careful!.......2002-08-28
While Santelmo's book is valuable for all the interviews with early GI Joe creators, collectors who have not had experience handling rare items can be easily misled by the many photos of so-called "prototypes" which were "re-created" for the book. Because the "re-creations" are not clearly marked there is significant concern that when these surface in collecting circles they will be thought authentic because of their association with the book. The price guide is also virtually useless as it undervalues some very rare pieces and wildly overvalues some more common ones. Buyer Beware!
Joemazing.......2002-03-23
This book rocks! I can't say enough good things about it. Very well put together and great pics. It makes me want to get my joes out of the attic.
A Very Good Standard Reference Guide.......2001-12-22
While some hardcore collectors and professional critics have found some small points to pick at in this book, most reasonable collectors will find it to be just what it purports to be: A very good standard reference guide to one of our all time favorite toys G.I. Joe. So find a comfortable chair, turn off the TV, flip open the book and get reacquainted with a old childhood friend G.I. Joe.

Book Description
In recent architecture theory and practise there has been a tendency to refer to exteriors as a skin concealing an interior, as opposed to the traditional and more physical concepts of surface, flatness, and depth. The computer now enables the architect to call his design into life, free from the rigid material form, and view it as a flexible and interactive creation. In this book, the concepts of flatness and surface tension are examined in the light of virtual design and built reality. A selection of projects are presented to show how the architects regard space and surfaces in modern architectural practice in a digital age.

Depth is brought to the surface.......2000-12-12
After the Moderne with its dominating theme of transparency andthe postmodern with its absolute flatness of façades to whichImperiale assigns a "lack of depth", depth is brought to thesurface. The interaction between shell and contents corresponds to thecontemporary idea of our own body. Our skin being the largest organ wepossess is experienced as a mirror of the inside and is increasinglybeing regarded as a filtering membrane between the inside and theoutside. In this small book, six chapters mention and introduce allrelevant theses. After comparisons with examples from art, the secondchapter is dedicated to architectural surfaces as successors to mediawalls. Folds, theories of Deleuze and the consequences of animationsoftware have led to topological surfaces such as the Klein bottle orthe Moebius strip. The digital technologies are explained briefly butclearly, from NURBS and hybrids to liquid-crystal surfaces. The fourthchapter is dedicated to the interface between the virtual and the realworld. The concluding remarks and outlook are brief and ask questionsconcerning representation in today's architecture...

Entrepreneur's Notebook propels you on a whirlwind tour of the start-up process. It is an invaluable reference for new and experienced entrepreneurs that includes chapters on a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurial team building to business plans to financing. This excellent book provides an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes. The author, Steven K. Gold, is an accomplished entrepreneur who has co-founded and led five early-stage ventures. As an investor and mentor, he also advises many entrepreneurs and young companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16
The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.
If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.
A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14
Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!
Exellent Book.......2007-05-11
Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.
Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27
This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.
This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.
The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.
Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04
This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

We All Need to Pee in Peace! Loved it!.......2007-07-05
As mothers, we all need to pee in peace right? But these gals had the guts and finesse to write about it. I loved the size because I was able to carry it in my purse and read it while getting a pedicure or in the waiting room at the dentist office. The authors are positive role models for women, by the fact that they are total opposites, yet still connect and support each other. Their personal stories made it entertaining, refreshing and inspiring. They mention that $1 of each book sale goes to a cancer foundation, that in itself is worth the purchase... Kudos!
Very funny, BUT this book is TINY in size!.......2007-07-03
The book's content is very funny and you will definitely get some out loud laughs from it -- BUT the book is actually only a few inches big. I was disappointed and basically shocked when I received it in the mail. If this were a normal sized book it would most likely only be 2-3 chapters in length. The problem with the TINY (literally doll sized) book is that it's frustrating to hold open when reading. And for any busy mom out there the last thing needed when finally getting a free moment to read a book is to have to struggle with holding the itty-bitty book open. If you are looking for some good reads to laugh about the struggles of parenting try:
1. "The Perfect Stranger" by Lucy Kaylin,
2. "I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids: Reinventing Modern Motherhood" by Trisha Ashworth & Amy Nobile or
3. "What's the Matter With Mommy?: Rantings of a Reluctant Stay-at-home Mom" by Kelley Cunningham.
Peeing in Manhattan.......2007-06-08
The book is funny and clever, but suffers an undercurrent of snobbery. I liked the chapter on both sides of the cooking issue, but the talk about clothes and cars gives the author away. Book is best for moms with more than one child. Not recommended as a shower gift -- might discourage a poor mother-to-be.
Funny, book, I have already passed it on!.......2007-06-06
This is really a funny book. I think Beth and Yvette have been able to see into my life as a working mom, artist, career woman, class parent, author and wife. The size of this book is fantastic it fits perfectly in my bag. Nice and compact.
Laughter and Mama-Camaraderie Galore!.......2007-04-25
With candor, intelligence, and humor to spare, "Peeing in Peace" should be tucked into every mom's purse---and diaper bag! With a non-judgmental voice, Beth and Yvette's personal tales are conveyed in a way that regardless of whether you are a working mom, working from home mom, or are headquartered out of your home working AS a mom, you will smile and see glimpses of your own maternal experience.
An equally perfect gift for the new mommy who's heading back to the office or the one who has decided to "stay home", the giggles provoked by "Peeing in Peace" can ease the toughest of Mommy transitions. I highly recommend it!

Good training exercises and helpful tips.......2000-04-06
I found this book of Myers-Briggs exercises very helpful in adding new interactive activities to my programs. The book has several examples of activities for each of the MBTIs mental functions (Sensing, iNtuition, Thinking and Feeling), the attitudes (Extraversion, Introversion, Judging and Perceiving) and combinations of the preferences. The directions are easy to follow and the programs can be adapted to your audience. I use them with college students as well as older adult groups. The exercises are fun and do a good job of explaining how preferences work in the real world. I do wish there were a few more facilitator tips in each exercise. Having said that, for people familiar with what the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is and is not, these exercises will keep your program fun and help in the learning process of your group.
