Book Description
Separated by a decade and 200 points on their SAT scores, Jack and Connor Reed have a life in the Cleveland suburbs held together by spit and Chinese takeout. With his self-absorbed, over-the-hill parents dead by his twenty-fifth birthday, Jack has abandoned his own plans and returned to his parents’ house where he works marathon hours at his late father’s law firm, beds young paralegals, and throws money and advice at his teenage brother. Connor meanwhile wants nothing more than to leave the Midwest, start a family early, and do everything the way his parents didn’t. But over the years, through the car crashes and bad breakups, the illnesses and illicit affairs, both realize that while circumstances are sometimes beyond control, there are always choices to be made.
Family and Other Accidents tells the story of these brothers from their viewpoints as well as from those of their girlfriends, wives, and children. It is a story of what it means to be a family, to love unconditionally in the face of confusion, anger, and regret. Shari Goldhagen’s debut is a finely nuanced, universally resonant portrait of the ties, however strange or awkward, that bind families together through the decades.

Is blood thicker than water?.......2007-08-27
A therapist would have a heyday with the Reed brothers. Jack (older by 10 years) is a commitment-phobic attorney forced to raise his younger brother after the death of their parents. Connor meets the love of his life at a young age and they immediately have children, only to struggle financially and emotionally. We follow both of their different yet equally complicated lives for the next few decades, all without the moral compass that parents can so easily provide. This is basically a story without a plot, yet it is an intense character study - both characters being equally fascinating for very different reasons. It was surprisingly unsentimental, although I still felt sad and a bit empty when it was all done. Still, it was a very well-written book, and admirable as I've just discovered that this was Goldhagen's debut novel. I would recommend it, but not if you are looking for something uplifting.
I second the WOWs..........2007-08-07
I just want to second the previous reviewers' "WOW" and "Sleeper" comments. I wasn't expecting it at all. I picked it up, thought, oh another Oprah-botm-club family drama meant to tug heartstrings, but I was in the mood for something like that. This book then proceeded to surprise me at every turn. Where it could have been sentimental it wasn't. Just when I really adored a character, they did something unexpected and not in a good way. Just when I was willing to give up on a character, they did something that made me fall back in love with them. The book moves fast, the dialogue is real, you can't help but be absorbed in these characters' lives. Fast read and well worth it!
A quiet, often sad, always realistic story.......2007-04-08
Story: When Jack Reed was ten years old, his mother unexpectedly and unenthusiastically discovered that she was pregnant, and Connor was born. This all occurs before the story starts.
The story does start when Jack Reed is twenty-five, and Jack's and Connor's parents both die, separately, from natural causes, within a short span of time. Jack become Connor's legal guardian and, while working eighty hours per week trying to establish his career as a lawyer, he does his best to help his younger brother finish growing up.
The story then follows Jack and Connor through the next twenty-five years, as they face various forms of adversity, including relationship problems, health problems, and financial problems. Jack and Connor always try to be there for one another, but they are both quite inept at creating, building, and maintaining any other relationships. At least they are at first. I will not say which one, but one of them goes from "inept" to "fairly good with occasional acts of stupidity," while the other one is much slower at figuring out what love is, what it is not, and how to make love work.
I usually give more about plot, but this is not a plot-focused book. It is a character study, and a fictional, longitudinal view of how people develop throughout young adulthood. It is about the people much more than what they do or what happens to them.
My take: Wow. That's not "wow" as in the pace was in overdrive, or the action was incredible, or anything like that. It is "wow" as in, by the end of this novel, I knew these people, Jack and Connor and everyone in their lives. I knew them, and I cared about them. I cheered their (occasional) successes, and was saddened by their (oftimes self-created) losses. Shari Goldhagen has created a group of real people with realistic, and often quite flawed, relationships with each other. We even see their flaws trickle down to the next generation, although some of their children show signs of being able to grow beyond their parents' flaws and limitations.
Ms. Goldhagen not only creates realistic characters who do realistic things; she also writes well. While not a "fast read," the book is hard to put down and, when reality forces you to put it down, you have a strong urge to pick it back up as soon as possible. I usually feel that way when a book has mystery or lots of action, but this book is low on action, and the only mysteries involved are ones that people face daily: What choice will he make? How will she respond? Is the chest pain just stress, or something more? I wanted to keep reading (and reading) because I wanted to find out what these people were going to do with their relationships.
The tone of the book: I have two separate comments about the book that are more atmosphere-related. First of all, Jack and Connor, and some of their love interests, really struggle to distinguish love from sex, as many people (everyone?) do. This blurred distinction shows up in some occasionally jarring (to me at least) incidents, where two otherwise really nice people, developing a good relationship, shift into confused, almost tawdry sex. At first, I saw this as a flaw in the book, but then I realized that the author used these episodes, and the vulgar language sometimes involved, to show us just how difficult love can be, and how much of a challenge love is for these characters.
Secondly, the reader needs to know that this story is incredibly far from being a story that Disney Studios would ever tough, and not just because of the sometimes graphic sex. I will not give away the ending, but it is not an ending that much of Hollywood would leave as is; they would want to re-write it and sugar-coat it and tweak it. Family and Other Accidents is not for the faint of heart, and many readers will need tissues handy, especially in the last third of the story. While the sad tone of the book probably does not reach the level of "tragedy," it comes close.
Strengths: The writing, the realism, and the character development
Weaknesses: Some might be uncomfortable with the vulgarity and graphic scenes; not a cheerful story
Conclusion: This is a well-written story about very realistic characters and their strengths, flaws, and relationships. I will never forget these "people."
Recommended: Highly, if you can handle sadness and graphic scenes and language.
Walking on Eggshells.......2007-04-05
This book never came together for me. Right up to the end I was waiting and waiting for everything to come into focus, but it never did. I never really saw the point the author was trying to make and thus it was a lot of semi-interesting stuff that happened.
The story is about Jack and Connor Reed, whose parents are both dead. When the story begins, Connor is 17 and being raised by Jack, a junior member of his father's old law firm in Cleveland. The book then covers the next 23 years of their lives as they marry and divorce and have kids and so forth. Connor gets Hodgkin's disease but survives while Jack moves to Chicago to reconcile and marry (then divorce, then possibly remarry) his long-time fiancee Mona. Jack reluctantly has one son with Mona while Connor knocks up his girlfriend Laine and marries her and then divorces her, then possibly will remarry her.
A lot of the story--not just when Connor gets Hodgkin's--has the characters getting sick. Connor has a migraine. Laine cuts her hand. Mona gets mugged and hurts her wrist. Jack and Connor get food-poisoned on a trip from Cleveland to Massachusetts. Later Jack gets food-poisoned with his new girlfriend Kathy. Even Connor's dog gets sick! The first few times this is fine, but after a while it's repetitive.
Then of course we have Jack and Mona who break up and get together more than Ross and Rachel on "Friends." This gave the story a soapy edge I doubt the author intended, although she's worked for the National Enquirer, so maybe that's exactly what she meant to do. Do people really keep breaking up and getting together anywhere other than TV? And of course Connor and Laine have the same problem to a lesser extent. Maybe the author wanted us to believe in the bond of family or love or whatever, but as a good 50% of the population (or more) can tell you, most people who break up do not get back together--then break up, then get together, ad nauseum.
But I think the most annoying part of the book is that because it covers 23 years in 260 pages, it's always leaping around. At the start of every chapter is that disorienting moment when as the reader you're trying to determine when this is taking place, how much time has passed, and what's changed between chapters. So really you're spending a good quarter of the time reading wondering what the heck is going on. Not good.
Writing-wise, I'm never a big fan of present tense. There also seemed like a few grammatical errors and spelling errors the editor did not catch. There was also at least one factual error as well. The 1988 movie with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman is "Rain Man" not "Rainman"--a simple check on IMDB could have caught that. Such trivial errors may seem unimportant, but it erodes my confidence in the author. Not to mention it's just plain sloppy.
Overall I breezed through this book and it wasn't completely awful, but there are a lot of better books out there. Still, this is probably a good lightweight read for the plane or beach.
That is all.
Gaps in Time.......2007-03-19
Goldhagen's "Family and Other Accidents" zips through decades of the lives of the Reed boys. Jack Reed, older brother of Connor, is thrown into the father role after both their parents die in two unrelated deaths. He does "the best he can" and thus this depressing tale unfolds.
The reader follows both Jack and Connor as they fumble through life. Connor is first to accidentally form his family and Jack reluctantly follows years later.
The book itself is not bad, but the pace at which it moves does not allow the reader to form a true connection to either of the characters. Instead of feeling pity and perhaps identifying with either boys, we race through their lives as though we were sitting on their couch being shown a family photo album.
The book also end abruptly, leaving the reader without a true conclusion. Having begun without an introduction, the reader is left stumped.
Book Description
For three heroes, the past is about to come back to hunt them.
A renegade warrior, a mystic exile, and a magic-wielding soldier are on the run. Their enemies are closing in. Some want to control them, some want to rob them, and others just want them dead.
In a land of monsters and renegades, their one hope for survival may be an ancient device of evil, the long-lost Grieving Tree. . . .

The Best Eberron Series.......2006-11-21
...by far. This book continues the goodness. Best treatment of a dragon being smarter than everyone else I've ever seen.
Just as good as the first book !!.......2006-08-18
I loved the first book in this series, 'The Binding Stone', and this one is just as good. The plot is fast paced, the characters work really well - with a few new ones entering the scene - and I felt their relationships and characteristics developed interestingly during the course of the story. The end leaves you wishing the third book was already out ready to go ! I love how the plot goes to a new level by the end, and I thought the secret of the villian was well revealed and only intensified the plot ready for the next book.
A Little better than Book 1.......2006-04-11
The Grieving Tree by Don Bassingthwaite is the second book in the Dragon Below trilogy set in the Eberron world. The first book is titled The Binding Stone and was released in August, 2005. If you are interested in this book, you really need to read the first book so as not to get lost in the over-arching plot lines between the two books and most likely the third book as well.
When I reviewed the Binding Stone I gave it fairly average marks. T said there was a good story, and that the characters were mere 2-D cut-outs of countless fantasy novels before them. The same formula holds true in this book as well, although, I did enjoy this one more than I did the first. It's not to say that Bassingthwaite is a bad author, in fact I think he is a good author, but these two books seem to be lacking something that makes a decent book a good book.
While the characters are pretty much the same as in the first book, they are fleshed out a little more, but not enough for me to really care about them. In fact I found myself more interested in the villains and was actually hoping the `heroes' would lose. The heroes show brief flashes of being very interesting and worthwhile reading, but they rarely help my interest for more than 5-10 pages at a time. I wish I could pin point it for everyone, but they just weren't that interesting to me. I often felt like several names could be attached to the characters that I had read them several times before, there was little `new' feeling to them. Where as the villains had some semblance of uniqueness that made them interesting and worthwhile to read.
The plot carries over from the first book right where it left off. This lends itself to being easier to understand and keep on going. However, I was a little disappointed that more sub-plots were not developed. There seemed to be a great deal of room for sub-plots there were ignored. Also, from the first book there is a deep seeded secret between two of the heroes that is hinted at several times through both books. Then, finally, when it is revealed it leaves the reader feeling hallow because it is rushed through like it mattered very little. After all the hinting it seems like there should have been a much bigger reaction and consequences. The main plot of the book is well written and does a decent job at explaining some key elements of the story, but there again at times it feels like the author is just telling us things to `make sure' we get what is going on.
Overall, this is an okay read if you are interested in the Eberron world. I have read every Eberron novel so far and this is a little below average for me. It's not the worst Eberron book out there, but certainly not the best either. I would hesitate to recommend this book to people not really interested in the Eberron. I am holding out hope that the third book will be better than the first two. Again, not a bad book by any means, but I definitely think there are better books out there right now.
A great story with great characters.......2006-03-29
"The Grieving Tree" is the second book in the "Dragon Below" trilogy, set in the world of Eberron. Like the first book in the trilogy ("The Binding Stone"), this book is a fast-paced, exciting adventure book. The plot revolves around a mixed bag of heroes who are caught up in a life or death struggle with Dah'mir, a charismatic priest of the dragon below who turns out to be more than he appears.
"The Grieving Tree" picks up where "The Binding Stone" left off with the heroes learning of a riddle which could lead them to an important clue about Dah'mir's origins. The riddle is obscure and the path they must follow is filled with danger. As mentioned above the book is fast-paced and full of action. The plot is well thought-out and well written.
The strength of this series is in its characters all of whom have interesting back-stories which are slowly revealed over the course of the story. The good guys, are not your typical hero-types. Each has his or her own flaws and their shared past often creates tension between some of the members of the party. This adds a sense of urgency and excitement to the story. Throughout the book, the reader is left guessing about what will happen next and how this sometimes fragile alliance will hold together. If you are a fan of characters who are "shades of grey" and of character development, then you will enjoy this book.
And the villains are equally interesting. My favourite was the very unique Hruucan, who is an undead creature who feeds off on fire and peoples life-forces. A very interesting villain indeed. One thing I enjoyed is that, while Dah'mir was not above using and discarding his followers, the bad guys are not the typical bad guys whose in-fighting leads to their downfall.
In my humble opinion, this book has something for everyone. There is action, adventure, magic, and even a little mystery. The story is interesting and the characters are well-written.
I would recommend this book to all fans of epic fantasy, but especially to fans of Eberron.
One word of warning, this is the second book of the series, and while there is a very nice summary of book 1 at the beginning, I would recommend first reading "The Binding Stone," which is also an excellent book.

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in a story for kids.......2004-03-02
The cover of "Spider-Man Saves the Day" informs us that it is based on the new moive (the old 2002 "Spider-Man" movie and not the new 2004 "Spider-Man" movie) and on the title page we learn that the book is based on the screenplay by David Koepp and adapted by Acton Figueroa. However, I have to say that only thing specific to either "Spider-Man" movie in this Festival Readers volume intended for young readers ages 4-7 is the reference to Uncle Ben's declaration "With great power comes great responsibility." But you do not see any of the other characters from the film, or the comic book, for that matter; the damsel in distress in the alley has blonde hair so she cannot be Mary Jane even though she is described as someone Spider-Man knows.
In "Spider-Man Saves the Day" our hero swings around the city doing a series of good deeds and making the city safe for everyone (except the bad guys). The art is by Ron Lim and I have to say that having the red parts of Spider-Man's outfit lined with metal bands looks really odd (especially because it does not continue to the blue part of the costume). However, young readers will get a sense for what Spider-Man does and why he does it, as well as one of the key elements of the character's mythos, which is that not everybody things he is a hero despite all the good deeds that he does.
Incentive for Early Readers Who are Spider-man Fans.......2003-07-27
My son, who just turned six years old, loves to read this book himself because he can't wait to find out what Spider-man does next! Even the bigger words -- "superpowers," "responsibility," "dangerous" -- are easy for him to read in the context of his familiarity wth Spider-man. I'm going to buy "I Am Spiderman" by the same author and maybe one the Figueroa "Hulk" books too.
Good Easy Reader for Spiderman fans.......2002-08-15
This is a good easy reader for young Spiderman fans. It is the first Spiderman book I have found age appropriate for my four year old super hero fanatic. He loves it!

Five stars pretty much says it all. Don't just read it, become intimate with the teaching and absorb it. What else is there for me to say?
Amazing.......2004-04-21
Another masterpiece by Wei Wu Wei! To be sure the insights in this book may seem difficult to get at, but insights are not the point of Wei Wu Wei's books. They offer us inspiration on our journey towards the truth, not answers or guides to life. The Tenth Man is a book everyone should read. Whether you think you have it all figured or not, this book is sure to open your eyes.
Vajra, a diamond blade..........2003-11-12
It might be a little more immediate to get hit in the head with certain shamanic herbs...but if language can do damage to the matrix's sleep, this book should do it for you. Personally, I thought the author's brilliant elucidation of the prajnaparamita sutras, in just a few lines, was worth selling your field to buy.
If you're here, this book is probably for you. If you get it and it isn't, hey...what have you lost? lol Be warned: "Heavy Deconstruction."
Clever.......2003-09-26
Wei Wu Wei was very clever.
The Tenth Man (like the superior Ask the Awakened) is a collection of short essays, poetry and dialogues expressing Wei Wu Wei's profound understanding of Ch'an, Taoist and Advaita philosophies.
The writing is abstruse, uncompromising and very challenging at times.
For sure there is insight to be found. But too often the cleverness gets in the way.
Few can point you in the right direction better.......2003-08-22
The author's cryptic, aphoristic style in short expositions and dialogues of not longer than several pages at a time will challenge and then stop the mind. I can only describe the state induced as one of tension...a feeling that there is just a thin veil separating one from Profound Understanding that, while thin, is very difficult to penetrate. However, with perseverence, intuition may reveal to you what words can never convey. But words can point you in the right direction and few authors I have come across do this as skillfully. I regard all his books as classics that are at the top of my shelf, so to speak. Fans of Douglas Harding, Tony Parsons, zen, advaita, Ramana Maharshi, taoism will probably agree with me. But if they don't, that's fine too.

All you want and need to know about Stevia.......2000-11-27
I have done extensive research on the history and uses of Stevia. The most common roadblocks I have come across are 1. Scare tactics by artificial sweetner companies that warn of the *dangers* of this natural alternative 2. Companies that are selling Stevia themselves that write glowing fluff that, although may be true, don't provide any facts about what Stevia is or where it's history lies.
Then I found this book. Mr. Richard brings an his extensive research and knowledge to the pages and introduces the reader to Stevia from every angle. Taking the time to include growing tips, history and even recipes, this author has done an outstanding job of showing the benefits of Stevia and how easily it can and is used in the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in incorporating this healthful plant into their life and for anyone who wonders what all the hype is about.

COLLECTING SIMPSONS! is a well-designed, humor-filled book that's a definitive guide to the mind-boggling amount of licensed merchandise inspired by "The Simpsons" TV series.
It features:
-- A generous page size of 8 by 11 inches.
-- A detailed price guide listing typical values for more than 1,000 items.
-- More than 375 black-and-white photos, as well as a dozen color ones on the heavy-duty front and back cover. A four-page Photo Index makes it easy to find them all.
-- A brief history of "The Simpsons" and how it became a merchandising marvel.
-- Reviews of Simpsons action figures, collector plates, books, software and other goods.
-- Advice on how to get the best deals when buying Simpsons animation art.
-- A step-by-step autopsy of a talking Bart Simpson doll that reveals exactly how this popular toy works.
-- Photo-filled chapters exploring Simpsons bootlegs and hard-to-find promotional merchandise you won't find in retail stores.

not good.......2002-02-27
...the first thing I see is that the front cover picture is all blurry. Plus the photos inside are all black and white. "worst book ever" as the comic book guy would say.
"I'd never lend my name to an inferior product" (Bart).......2001-09-15
Lots of effort, research and love for the hobby has made this book as excellent as it is. It's obvious that this piece is written by a true fan, which makes it all the more interesting. The book takes an exhausting look at the variety of Simpsons merchandise, with hundreds of photos and pricing information. I've never considered myself a collector, but browsing through the pages of this book made me want more items I can ever afford to buy. That's why having this guide is a nice substitute for having the real things.
As Flanders would say, "IT'S SCRUM-DIDDILY-UMSCIOUS!".......1999-12-03
Instead of History 101 this is SIMPSONS COLLECTING 101. It is a very well written, and highly entertaining book, for anyone who knows THE SIMPSONS are not related to OJ! It's not your basic "collecting book" but much more. Just an all around great book that makes me want to shout WOO HOO!
Outstanding!.......1999-11-29
I've been collecting Simpsons memorabilia for several years and have been following the Collecting Simpsons website since just after its inception. I can unequivocally say that Bill LaRue's book is AWESOME! Whether you are a beginner to the hobby or a veteran looking for some new collecting inspiration, this book covers Simpsons collectibles like no other written material available. The book is fun and easy to read, well organized and practically updated for free through the website. It's a must have for any Simpsons fan.
NO Simpsons fan should be without this book!.......1999-11-29
What can I say? This book is excellent! Just when I thought I had seen every item made regarding the Simpsons, turn the page, and there is something new! The book is highly organized, fun to explore, and will be a valuable resource for a long time to come. I really enjoy how the book is set up in two sections. The first half gives you an overview into the many different categories of Simpsons collectibles. Then the second half of the book is the higly detailed price guide, FULL of pictures! I truly recommend this book for any fan of the Simpsons!

Worth it for just one technique.......2007-08-28
While many of the techniques are covered in some of the other sewing textbooks you might have read one techique in particular stands out to me as I have never seen this elsewhere is how to sew a all in one facing professionally. Normally the intructions tell you to leave the shoulder seams open and then "hand sew" them. Not this one it shows you how to do the factory way. If you don't own any other sewing books then this is the one to get
great business.......2007-05-19
I am very happy with the speed of delivery, price and condition of the book. Thanks!!!
A Guide to Fashion Sewing.......2007-01-13
Great book. It is a must for any sewer of garments. Great tips and good directions.
Actually a little disappointed.......2006-09-19
I bought this sewing guide looking for the advanced time-saving construction techniques used in the garment industry. Sadly, I didn't find them in this book, despite the glowing reviews. It is a good textbook and reference manual on basic sewing. The information is clearly presented with excellent and plentiful illustrations. However, the skills depicted are ones I mastered quite a while ago. I will keep this book in place of others in my library, but this was an expensive experiment. I would not recommend this book to anyone over an intermediate skill level.

Early Bowie Book.......2001-06-27
Good pictures, not to many though. This book from 1977 has a lot of excellent pictures of Bowie from his Hunky Dory phase through his Thin White Duke incarnation. Good for the serious collector only.
