Can a Fly Make for a Comforting Action Figure?.......2004-08-05
Aspirations of superpowers in small children are nothing new. One little boy thinks he cam fly. Another little girl thinks she can fight evil. A little boy thinks he can turn into a fly. A little girl... Wait. A fly?
Jim Munroe's Flyboy Action Figure Comes with Gasmask begins an average story about an average guy named Ryan who lives with his average roommates and is an average student and does a below-average job of picking up women. One day while at his regular haunt - the coffee house - Ryan gets up the nerve to ask out Cassandra, the waitress he has been admiring from afar.
Cassandra is less than average. She used to play in a famous punk rock band. She is an ardent feminist, sometimes lesbian and single mom. And she can turn invisible.
Average Ryan might be intimidated by this fact if it weren't for his own ability to turn into a fly. That's right, a fly. In Flyboy, Ryan discovers early on in childhood that he can indeed turn into a fly.
Now before you go off assuming that this is some modern-day remake of David Cronenberg's 1986 hit The Fly, know that in this tale boy meets girl and girl does not shoot boy as he turns into some grotesque creature. In fact, Flyboy is only a small part science fiction, believe it or not.
When a girl who can turn invisible meets a boy who can turn into a fly, there is no other choice than for the two to become superheroes.
Right?
If those argument is not a reasonable one to you, than neither will be most of the plot of Flyboy. However, if you can accept this shaky premise, then Flyboy makes for what is actually a sweet, though quirky, story.
Munroe up and away.......2003-11-15
Anyone with a sense of adventure should read this book! This as well as Munroe's other two books are three of the BEST books I have ever read!
Terrible!!!.......2003-10-19
The author of this book took a bad idea and wrote an even worse book. read at your own risk. The characters are disagreeable, and the writing is disgustingly simplistic.
I have the feeling the author wrote this book for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, this was recommended to me by a friend. I hope to spare you do not buy or read this book.
Great, but.........2002-10-26
This book had me mesmerised from the minute I started reading it.. it's intellegence with an immature voice, which is an odd combination, but, strangely enough, works with the bizzarre plot. It also has a sense of humour as strange as its plotline, with some dark notes that keep it from completely being a comedy book. I, overall, loved it.. or, what I read of it.
Which brings me to why I gave it three stars instead of five.
I am fourteen years old, and found this in the public library (I read mostly from the adult section.) I had gotten SO into the book, when.. well, you know how most books, when it gets to a sex-scene, cut off right before "it" starts? Well, this book didn't. I immediately put it down (what, you thought I'd be so immature as to keep reading something NC-17, at my age?) And, unfortunately, never got to finish the book. (I WOULD have skipped over that part, but my Mom would KILL me if she found out I kept reading a book that had that in it. Yes, she is nosy enough to find out.)
Moral? Great story for adults to read, but kids an' underage teens, STAY AWAY.
Superheroes for Social Justice.......2002-05-24
This was a fun read, a fast one, a nice vacation novel. The hero and narrator is a typical college kid and the voice is flawless -- probably because the book is written by a college kid. Exploits, insecurity, humor (sometimes charming in its lameness) and punk rock. I grinned, giggled, rolled my eyes, did all the things a fun little novel should make one do.
Also the distrust of authority that seems to be the watermark of our generation (my 50 year old hippie friend would dispute that). The hero can turn into a fly and his girlfriend can make things disappear. So they become Superheroes for Social Justice. And it's activism, but as activism goes, I'm frustrated. They just pull pranks, like making mailboxes disappear and vandalizing billboards. The kind of "activism" that doesn't really change anything, just annoys the Man and symptomizes basic unrest. But are they for real or are they just restless?
I'm trying to learn to be an activist, and one thing I'm learning is that there's acting out and then there's working for real change. These kids are acting out: that's okay, let the man know we're not all doped on soma. But real Superheroes for Social Justice would be effecting real change.

The second novel in the groundbreaking Coldfire trilogy
Two men, absolute enemies, must unite to conquer an evil greater than anything their world has ever known. One is a warrior priest ready to sacrifice anything and everything for the cause of humanity's progress; the other, a sorcerer who has survived for countless centuries by a total submission to evil. In their joint quest, both will be irrevocably changed.
Download Description
Determined to seek out and destroy the source of the fae-borne evil that is rapidly strengthening its control over the world called Erna, Damien Vryce, the warrior priest, has renewed his dangerous alliance with Gerald Tarrant, the immortal sorcerer known as the Hunter, and together with Hesseth, a woman of Erna's native species, the Rakh, they will dare the treacherous ocean crossing to Erne's eastern continent. But the crossing may well prove the least of their worries. For though the eastern continent appears to be a haven of stability and prosperity, this image of paradise masks an underlying corruption that threatens the very essence of the human spirit. And the three are soon forced to flee south into realms long since abandoned to the dark fae and its creatures.
Lost in a land where those who offer hope of salvation may prove to be the true masters of treachery, and steadily drawn toward a rendezvous which may rob them of that which is even more precious than life, will Damien, Tarrant, and Hesseth find their own fragile alliance shattered by a power out to possess or destroy all of humankind?

Excellent series.......2005-02-17
In most trilogies, the second book is the weakest of the three. This is one of the exceptions. Like the first book, it gets off to a rather slow start, but is probably an even better read once things get going. Religious themes are even more rampant here; as with Black Sun Rising, if you don't like books that make you think, look elsewhere.
There's not really a whole lot I can say. If you've read Black Sun Rising, you'll want to read this one too. If you haven't, you should. That's all there is to it.
One of the best series I have ever read!.......2004-11-13
The coldfire trilogy is one of the best series I have ever read. And I have read thousands of sci fi and fantasy books over more than a quarter century. Five stars all the way! Be sure to check out the rest of her books too. Without exception they have all been unlike anything else I've read. It's refreshing to read truly original works!
Don't worry.......2004-10-11
This is probably the weakest of the three books, but don't be discouraged. While it doesn't have quite the feel of originality the first book did it is still an OK novel, and the ending of the third book will be worth slogging through this slightly slogged down and slightly loose book.
Addictive!!.......2004-03-10
My mother and a friend had been on my case for YEARS to read these books, and I never did until this summer. Now - I regret waiting that long! The book will make you laugh, cry, mad, happy, anxious, and so many more things! You can spend HOURS reading and think nothing of it!
It DOES take a little bit to get into it in the beginning. There is a lengthy introduction to a couple of the main characters... But it makes it that much better throughout the rest of the book!
Once it gets going, it was all I thought about and every spare minute I had the book was in my hands! I'm reading #2 right now and can already see it building up again and can't WAIT to see where this journey takes me!!
this books is so freakin good!!!.......2003-02-16
all 3 of these books are soo freakin good ahh i love em! i highly recomend them!

Pardoe does it again!.......2003-10-13
Blaine Lee Pardoe hits us again with another great book. Even though the title gives away part of the story line, you never truley expect the way this book turns out and the main character is another one that people can relate to. I recomend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi, action adventure, or just a good plot.
Great book- pulls you in!.......2002-10-21
Particle projection cannons streaking past smoking wreckage of downed 60 ton machines. Explosions tearing apart living mechs. this book is a great book, but I would not reccomend it for young children. this is because it contains fighting sequences and mild gore(knife fights, toxic poisoning) This book, however is a wonderful new series based on the Mechwarrior computer games. I started it a little while ago, and I couldn't put it down! I highly reccommend to anyone who likes action, adventure, and mystery to at least look into this book.
Wonderful Book.......2002-08-01
I enjoyed the laster one of Blaine Lee Pardoe's books (Roar of Honor) but I found it a little slow at times. Not so with this one, which I enjoyed all the way through. It was wonderfully realistic. The writing was outstanding and the story itself, while a bit guessable, was very well done. I've read this several times, enjoying it each one.
The Bottom Line.......2000-08-20
Mel Odom and Blaine Lee Pardoe are an outstanding pair together. They help to bring alive words, it is almost as if you were right their watching everything happen. I do not normally like reading sci-fi, but this type of book I just could not put down. I had to keep reading to see what happend next. Great plot and just a great over all story.
Not bad at all..........2000-08-12
Actually, I had just read the previous book (by Pardoe), and found it pretty severely lacking. I was pleasantly surprised by (mos of) this one. Mel Odom's touch seemed to be a few early chapters where the characters were more developed than is typically found in these works. I enjoyed it greatly, and only wished other authors would follow in their footsteps and focused on weaving a REALISTIC world with REALISTIC characters... instead of cranking out page after page of "man-powered lightning"... "melting armor plates"...
Oh, and have these people EVER played the (board)game? Nobody hits this much.

A Story Needed to Be Told!.......2007-05-13
Lana Padilla was living a comfortable life when the Oklahoma City bombing occurred. No, she wasn't there. She was working as a realtor in the booming market of Las Vegas, living with her sons including one son, Josh, whose father was Terry Nichols. The book is told by her point of view as an unwilling participant in one of the worst domestic terrorism acts in our country's history. Immediately, Lana played the cooperative former wife and mother who gave up her life to the FBI who had alterior motives. Yes, their lives were in danger because of their connection to Terry Nichols, a man she thought she knew and loved at a time and the biological father of her son, Josh. Sadly, Lana learns about Terry involvement with Tim McVeigh and how they were involved in something big. Of course, there are moments in the book that I wanted to criticize LAna's actions like not getting an attorney when she first met the FBI agents at the door but could you blame her. She also writes about how the tragedy and her ex-husband's involvement scarred herself and her family's life. Besides dealing with the FBI, the press invasion, lawyers, she had a son with a drug problem and she was worried about her son, Josh, who was at one time considered to be John Doe 2. The book makes it clear that Josh was not involved and cooperated with the FBI to get in contact with his father who he loved and adored. Even after McVeigh's execution, the Oklahoma City bombing has become a part of American history with a haunting museum where once 169 innocent lives stood, worked, lived, etc. Their families are in mourning to this day. Lana probably was tired of the press who continued to wreck havoc in her life by invading her privacy, trying to contact her repeatedly, and her son, Josh. She writes how it would have been so much better if it was foreign terrorists and not American born, bred and raised terrorists on home soil. I am giving the book a three stars because I think they could have waited but I can tell how publishers are on getting their story out fast enough.
Quickie book cashes in.......2004-12-10
There's not much worth reading here. It's a badly written, uninformative book that tries to paint the "as told to" author, Terry Nichols' ex-wife, as an insider on the case. If anything, you feel sorry for Nichols throughout as Padilla attempts to aggrandize her role and to make statements without basis in fact.
Very misleading.......2004-11-27
This book is not about her life with Timothy McVeigh because she didn't have a life with Tim McVeigh. She hardly knew him and her contact with him was limited to a few brief phone calls and one short in person meeting when Tim came to her house to pick up a tv set.I feel the title was very deceptive and designed to lure people in. She had a life with Terry yes, but not Tim. Plus she made the unfair allegation that Tim killed Marife Nichol's son when there is not and was not the thinnest shred of evidence thats true.In fact all the evidence points in the opposite direction-that McVeigh tried to save the boys life.Only read if you have an intense desire to know every last scrap of information, mainly about Terry Nichols because he is primarily what the book is about.
This book is worth buying.......2002-01-27
This book is very interesting and allows those of us who are interested in the McVeigh-Nichols saga to see how the bombing affected some of their family members. The only downfall - the book stops short of the trial. I hope Lana Padilla someday writes a second book.

Faith is more than a feeling..........2006-12-15
This book is intended to be a guide for those who preach in a post-modern culture. The author offers insights about what message will reach the GenX listener, to stir their hearts but not shake them up. The author seeks to answer the question, "What does it feel like to follow Christ in a post-Christian culture?"
The standout words in that question are 'feel like'. Is our message based on feelings? (Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!) While faith may include feeling, faith is much more than a feeling or set of feelings or lack thereof--Christian faith is believing in Jesus and doing His will, whether we 'feel like' it (which we often do) or not (which is also often the case). So, I think the author is on to something but he stumbled on it almost accidentally, in his assumptions, which are betrayed, in his use of the phrase 'feel like'.
His book is arranged around four key issues: Ambiguity, Suffering, Transformation and Reconciliation.
By Ambiguity the author means the juxtaposition of Christian faith and a culture that is antithetic or apathetic to it. While this is not a new theme (think for instance of the early Christians being persecuted by the Roman Empire, or the fledgling Protestant movement under attack by its opponents) it feels like something new to some. The reality is, Christians have always been called upon to live their faith even if the people around them are hedonistic, amoral and godless. A church that is faithful will say to all, not just to the GenXer but all, "It may not feel like it is good to stand out from such a crowd, but Jesus calls us to do just that, every day."
What about Suffering? Can it be that in the 21st Century Christians are still saying, "Don't ask me to suffer, Lord, because that is what you came to do for me--I expect to get from the cradle to the grave happy, healthy, un-harried and unscathed."? Apparently so. But the truth of the matter, which was spoken and incarnated by Dietrich Bonhoffer in the 1930s, is that "When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die." Suffering is part of the human condition and the core of Christian obedience. Suffering cannot be avoided, no matter how much one may insulate one's self from the world and its ways. Not if one wants to answer faithfully the question, "What Would Jesus Do?"
Transformation is what Christian faith is all about. We are to be transformed from unrepentant sinners to servants and friends of Jesus. This takes pain, work, prayer, persistence, stumbling and getting up again, listening, learning, growth, giving up one's preconceived notions and, yes, everyone's least favorite word: change. People who don't like these sorts of things (that would be all people on earth) do them, whether they feel like it or not, in order to be true to the Gospel.
Reconciliation is the theme of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Confession of 1967, a thoughtful and powerful statement of faith that would serve many Christians well, were more church members and clergy to read and apply it, no matter what their corner of Christianity might be.
As you see, the concerns Feldmer addresses prompted some dialogue on my part. Perhaps it will have a similar effect on you should you choose to read it.

TOFU GOES WEST.......2005-09-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to include more tofu in their diet without becoming an Asian cook...I've been cooking with tofu for several years and have figured out a few ways to use it that are not traditional...but this book is full of fun EASY recipies using simple ingredients and producing delicious results that I never would have thought of on my own.
I'm now baking delicious muffins and amazing puddings using tofu! This is now my most used cookbook...of course I don't really use cookbooks much...probably because recipies call for ingredients that would cause me to make a grocery run...and I don't do that...I substitute...so most cookbooks don't work for me..but TOFU GOES WEST is based on simple cooking using simple ingredients and simple techniques...there is nothing fancy or difficult...BUT ALL THE RECIPIES ARE DELICIOUS and the ALL WORK! This is fast, simple cooking that produces excellent results.
As the title implies, it is NOT Asian cooking...Recipies are broken down into Main Dishes, Breads & Deserts. Some of my favorite Main Dishes are the TOFU PAN PIZZA, STUFFED BELL PEPPERS, CHILI CON TOFU and MUSHROOM SKILLET BAKE. Under Breads we love the Pan Fried Corn Cakes although we consider this more of a main dish than a bread and we add all sorts of veges to them including bell peppers and zucchini. The best muffins I've ever baked or eaten in my life are CINNAMON OAT MUFFINS using tofu...absolutely amazing muffin recipe. There are quite a few goodies under deserts also...LEMONY BREAD PUDDING, YAM PIE and a surprise MELLOW PUDDING using Molasses and Honey are all delicious.
It appears that this book is out of print and only available used. If you have any interest in replacing other forms of protein with Tofu and want an idea book...this is the book for you! It isn't a big book but it is HUGE on ideas that will get you started and keep you cooking healthy delicious meals!

Book Description
Drawing from his own ascent through the MGM studio system, Mr. Winters guides the reader through a history of American film editing, beginning with its earliest days when film was torn by hand. Not a glamorous account of Hollywood, the book gives film buffs and moviegoers a nuts-and-bolts look at the mechanics of editing from the inside out.
Customer Reviews:
A page-turner!.......2001-12-10
Ralph Winters spent 70 years in the movie business engaged in the critical but often under-appreciated job of film editor. His credits include Ben Hur, King Solomon's Mines, Gaslight and Victor/Victoria. The book tells about how these movies and others were made --- in a way that keeps it lively and informative. Winters is now 92 --- hopefully just beginning a new literary career.
