In Gilligan's Wake, Esquire columnist Tom Carson takes a shaky premise---20th-century American culture as seen through the characters of Gilligan's Island--and turns it into a feverishly imaginative jigsaw puzzle of a book. Each castaway has been given a bizarre, interconnected history, which they recount in the book's seven chapters.

This fateful trip begins with Gilligan, who tells of his days writing beat poetry with Lawrence Ferlinghetti, only to awaken in a Minnesota mental institution. The Skipper relates how he spent World War II drinking cheap beer on PT boats with McHale and Jack Kennedy, who had "a grin like autumn leaves with a pack of Chiclets in the middle." In later stories, "beaming, imbecilic" Thurston recommends former chum Alger Hiss for his first government job, while spoiled Lovey has a morphine-inspired fling with The Great Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan. Brilliant bombshell Ginger ("My hips could have started the Timex folks weeping") lands a B-movie career in L.A., and a memorable night at Frank Sinatra's house. In between building the A-bomb, inventing the CIA, and generally dictating world events with his pals Roy Cohn and "Hank" Kissinger, the Professor bestows sexual favors on invalids. Finally, cheerful Mary-Ann, "the personification of America," leaves her Kansas home to attend the Sorbonne, where she meets a handsome Frenchman and discovers she is unable to lose her virginity.

Along the way, Gilligan's Wake's elusive meta-narrator reveals himself through clues and exposition in his hallucinatory retelling of American history. Carson propels the novel with astute cultural criticisms and energetic prose, including rapid-fire wordplay and narrative echoes that recall Thomas Pynchon. The result is a multifaceted, uncertain, and dazzling voyage. --Ross Doll

Book Description

In this kaleidoscopic fantasy, seven uniquely familiar narrators recall the last American century. An old salt shares his memories of fellow PT-boat skipper Jack Kennedy. A New York millionaire gets Alger Hiss a job. An ex-debutante reveals her Jazz Age friendship with The Great Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan. A Dixie redhead dishes up the inside scoop on the Rat Pack. A scientist confesses to his part in every event from Los Alamos to Watergate. And Mary-Ann Kilroy of Russell, Kansas finds romance in Paris before learning why she'll never leave the island. But behind them lurks the man who keeps insisting that his name isn't Gilligan-and who's inventing this brilliant, poignant comic collage for reasons of his own.

5 out of 5 stars A Genuine Tour de Force.......2005-06-12

Carson provides a genuine tour de force that does not impinge upon Fitzgerald's quest for the great American novel, while displaying tremendous grasp of popular culture, major social themes and Carson's unfailing sense of whimsy and humor. Well worth both the money and the time spent to read.

Nashville City Paper BookClub Column - May 27, 2004

If you cannot get enough of the Rat Pack then select Gilligan's Wake by Tom Carson (Picador). The writer deftly uses his background as a columnist for The Village Voice and Esquire to infuse his novel with characters famous in our pop culture.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.... and readable!.......2004-04-13

I always get nervous around metafiction, fearing that the author will be so taken up with his/her own brilliance that s/he will forget the narrative line. That doesn't happen here. I found this strangely compelling, and was unable to put it down. The pop culture references are very funny while at the same time insightful. This wasn't the light vacation read I was hoping for, but I think it's been one step better -- it's made me think.

4 out of 5 stars Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.......2004-02-14

Six years before she stepped onto the SS Minnow for that three-hour tour, Mary-Ann in Paris struggled to explain America in the 20th Century to her paramour Jean-Luc Goddard, the father of French cinema verite. "There's something so sweet about it, so nice you wouldn't believe it - no matter how many dumb mistakes we ever made, maybe because the sweetness makes it so easy to forget them. And I guess we always thought the sweetness would make up for the mistakes as far as all the rest of you were concerned too."

In his novel Gilligan's Wake, Tom Carson uses his skill as a writer on pop culture and politics (for the Village Voice and LA Weekly) to capture the American Century. He gives each of the seven castaways a chapter to express a nation's history and meaning in their own voice and their own lives. Each tells how the weather started getting rough long before the fateful trip.

The tale of our castaways begins, as the old chantey goes, with the first mate. Gilligan is committed to the Cleaver Ward of the Mayo psychiatric hospital, insisting that he is Maynard G. Krebs, Dobie Gillis' beatnik friend. In his lunatic ranting, he tells Dr. Kildare F. Troop, Nurse Julia, and his roommate Holden Caulfield about living in San Francisco and hobnobbing with Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, and Jasper Johns.

The Skipper recollects his wartime antics off the South Pacific islands of Tallulabonka and Fondawonda with fellow PT-boat skippers McHale and Kennedy, all the while resented by the supply officer and shore rat "Nick." "Nick," by the way, becomes the unpleasant junior Congressman from California who "nailed Alger Hiss," the Groton classmate of Thurston Howell. The kindly, clueless millionaire reminisces how over a lunch of moose-and-squirrel hash, Alger prevailed upon him to secure him his first Washington job.

Alice is a much darker character than the Lovey Howell she eventually becomes. Daughter of an emotionally distant suffragette, she idles away the 1920's as a morphine addicted debutante flapper along with her (very) intimate Daisy Buchanan. Daisy, widowed by Tom's accident on the polo field, is writing her own book about Gatsby, portraying him not as a tragic hero with soaring dreams but rather as "a tyrant and a dictator who carries your head around on a stick even though he calls it his banner, because he's in love with himself but he can never admit that, and so he makes you his idol and loves himself, adores himself, worships himself for having one." A refreshing 21st century take on the 20th's most analyzed literary character that's pretty spot on.

Ginger, more so the Tina Louise from God's Little Acre than the Monroe Doctrine, is the most self aware of the seven. She hops a Greyhound from "Alabam'-don't-give-a-damn" to Hollywood, where she sleeps her way to the middle. At one point, she finds herself kicked out of Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs house by a finger-snapping gold necklaced Sammy Davis, Jr., whom she (somewhat) inadvertently calls "Samby" after "the most amazing ninety-two minutes in my far from inconsiderable experience as a mistress of the horizontal arts."

Ginger's sexual exploits pale next to those of the Professor, who unashamedly reveals himself a narcissistic Dr. Strangelove. After a macabre game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey at Los Alamos in which he steers a blindfolded Oppenheimer toward Nagasaki on a wall map, thereby sealing the fate of an entire city, he joins Roy Cohn and Henry Kissinger in an ultra-covert organization. His resume of sinister schemes includes the Suez Canal crisis, the animatronic Gerald Ford, and the deflowering of young girls and boys.

The real story, however, is Mary-Ann's. She tells of growing up in Russell, Kansas, where her mother, widowed by the Battle of Iwo Jima, is the librarian, and the young yet avuncular County Attorney Bob Dole greets her every morning on Main Street. Her escape to Paris for a summer program at the Sorbonne precipitates a series of epiphanies (or in her words "unveilings") that inexorably lead her to that uncharted desert isle.

The castaways' tales jump about in time, jumbling and spiraling in on historical events both infamous and obscure. Much like Joseph Heller's Catch-22, dozens of narrative threads weave into the tapestry that covers an era. "If we were a medieval morality play," Mary-Ann ponders, "our names would be Youth, Clumsiness, Wealth, Cowardice, Hubba-Hubba, and Self-Love. Plus I, Mary-Ann, who am or may be all these things." Indeed, they provide comfort and definition as personifications of America. Or as Ginger (who turns out to be the smart one) philosophically speculates after 40 years on the island, are they an incarnation that became a refuge, or a refuge that became an incarnation?

Mary-Ann unknowingly provides one answer (after wandering the island and finding a pig's head on a stick). "Even before we washed up here, people always said our century had packed in more horrors that any other... The country that all seven of us came from fought some horrors and inflicted others, while being spared most of the worst." But no longer. Looking ahead for a long, long time, they'll have to make the best of things. It's an uphill climb.

5 out of 5 stars Very very very very very very funny. And smart........2003-10-04

This book sorta reminds me of PALE FIRE by Nabokov. Or maybe INFINITE JEST. Or, I don't know, maybe just growing up in the 60s. If you liked those, you'll probably love this one. I only hope that Tom Carson keeps it up and writes more novels.

This book could never be made into a movie, but if it could, I'd be first in line to see it.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

After this, the series starts to lose its way a little, but this installment is still quite good. There are some nasty problems with more than one shape shifter, and of course, those undead wizards are still highly problematic for those in the company.

3 out of 5 stars 4 star book, but 'they weren't really dead' tactic = minus one star.......2006-08-12

This book picks up shortly after The White Rose, and follows the remnants of the company into the south, south of beryl (where the series started) into areas of different races and cultures, in an effort to reach semi-mythical Khatovar to return the annals of the company. There is a major military element to the story, including training of legions superficially resembling roman pre-marian ideas though weapons are not detailed, along with elephants in military use.

Cook did something here which, while I can understand the appeal of it, does strike me as 'not playing fair' with the reader.

spoilers follow. read at your peril.

He essentially says the taken (or at least most of the original 10) are not dead after all. Many were presumed and reported killed fighting each other and the rebels in a proxy conflict between the dominator and the lady in The Black Company. Even soulcatcher is not dead after all, even though a sorceress as powerful and in control of the taken as the Lady was present at her murder.

In all fairness, on page 72 of the white rose (paperback), Croaker considers the possibility that other Taken may still be alive as he contemplates that he did everything but burn the Limper in Shadows Linger. Even if you grant the Taken members of the 'shadow lords' might have just gone south after battle of Charm, questions about Soulcatcher's inactivity in the following years are certainly valid given her apparent obsession in meddling with her sister's affairs. Given how both the Limper (whom the Lady described as murdered) and Raven return from apparent death in The White Rose, it may be he was just realizing that resurrection offered a number of intruiging plot possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Crows and Shadows.......2006-06-29

Reeling from the battles at the Tower of Charm in the service of the Lady, the remains of the Black Company begin a new journey - back to the Hhatovar of their origins, lost in the jungles of the south. Still under Croaker's lead the compulsion to return seems like an elephant's last voyage to the graveyard. With the original volumes of the Company's history lost, no one knows what Khatovar really was, or why there ever was a Black Company, but the trip south stirs memories of the last free company of Khatovar, and they aren't fond ones. Danger and unwelcome friends seem to lurk everywhere.

Croaker's first stop is Taglios, where the Company undertakes to provide help in a struggle with four shadowmasters who are extending their own empire. Like the Taken before them, these are wizards who have little care for the humans who serve or oppose them. The Taglians are the last free people before this new dark empire and the Company needs to get rid of the bad guys before they can reach their own origin point. Unfortunately for the Company there are some Taglians who recall the legends of the times when the Black Company headed north with considerable fear, and cooperation and trust are in thin supply.

This will be the last volume written from Croaker's viewpoint (have no fear, he still will have a part to play) and it develops his new role as captain as well as a growing connection with the more human side of the Lady. The latter has expended all her power in the struggle to keep her old husband, the Dominator, from re-entering this world. Her new vulnerability doesn't make her a weak character, and her knowledge and experience make her an asset as the Black Company once again tries to extract disaster from the jaws of success.

Glen Cook proves that there is life after a trilogy as he begins the transition volumes (The Books of the South) that will lead into the Glittering Plain series. This transition of the Black Company from a tool of political empire building to an almost mystical entity with a serious, and perhaps deadly, agenda of its own makes a strong story all on its own. There are quite a few surprises to come, and Shadow Games is an example of perfect scene setting as the rules and the environment begin to change. Cook's writing continues to mature, defying the principle that a prolific writer inevitably dilutes his strength.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Black Company book..........2005-07-07

I was surprised to see this years ago...assuming the Company series was over. It starts a new chapter in the Company and marks the beginning of a very involved storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good...?.......2003-10-04

I too am tempted to say "this isn't up to the standards of the first 3". But I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that, when I discovered Cook, this was his most recent book. So I had to wait for each installment afterwards. I wish I had followed the rule I instituted when it became clear Robert Jordan was NEVER going to finish his series. I should have waited until Cook was done, and then read them all.

But it's a testament to my fanaticism that I just HAD to read each book as it appeared. I still give it 5 stars because I found the new storyline with the now-powerless Lady very intriguing. Cook also had my curiosity at max with "the crow" and the hints that old villains might return.

Overall, the rest of the series was ultimately excellent so this book has to get 5 stars for starting it all.

This book has always been popular with the techy-geeky crowd, but, since it was first published in the '70s, it missed out on the cyberpunk revolution of the '80s. It's too bad, because this is a compelling story of a future world tied together by a universal data network, a world that could be our tomorrow. It's a tense place filled with information overload and corporate domination, and nearly everything is known about everybody. Except Nickie Haflinger, a prodigy whose talents allow him to switch identities with a phone call. Nickie plans to change the world, if only he can keep from getting caught.

A Science Fiction Book Club Selection

"When John Brunner first told me of his intention to write this book, I was fascinated -- but I wondered whether he, or anyone, could bring it off. Bring it off he has -- with cool brilliance. A hero with transient personalities, animals with souls, think tanks and survival communities fuse to form a future so plausibly alive it has twitched at me ever since."

    -- Alvin Toffler

    Author of Future Shock

He Was The Most Dangerous Fugitive Alive, But He Didn't Exist!

Nickie Haflinger had lived a score of lifetimes...but technically he didn't exist. He was a fugitive from Tarnover, the high-powered government think tank that had educated him. First he had broken his identity code -- then he escaped.

Now he had to find a way to restore sanity and personal freedom to the computerized masses and to save a world tottering on the brink of disaster.

He didn't care how he did it...but the government did. That's when his Tarnover teachers got him back in their labs...and Nickie Haflinger was set up for a whole new education!

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Shockwaver Rider is a cyberpunk precursor style of book, written before there were even personal computers, Brunner comes up with a very extensive multi-user system that everyone is connected to.

That is obviously open to abuse, and a talented rebel sets out to do something about what is happening.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but it could have been more.......2006-08-23

First cyberpunk! Got the internet's effect on people right in 1975! Got the "wisdom of crowds" right in '75! And, of course, future shock and Brunner's style of short "chapters" tangental to the plot to flesh out the world. There is a lot of good stuff to think about here.

But, its all exposition. Characters talking about how they think the world should be run. Events happen, many integral to the plot, but they are all basically resolved in a section break then characters talk about the results. Don't get me wrong, I really like the book and think it is worth a read for almost everyone. I just don't think its a 5.

The message I take away is "give people information and let them make their own decisions". But, at the same time, the story tells us that it takes very exceptional people -- one virtually unique -- to make that happen. Which leaves me with the worry that if people were to start making the wrong choices -- as the bulk of society has in the story -- would the "enlightened elite" let them keep doing it? No easy answers.

    5 out of 5 stars Grand-daddy of all cyberpunk.......2005-11-17

I remember buying all Brunner novels I could find as he wrote them back in the 20th C. His were among the few science fiction novels that were in the book racks at the grocery, back in the late 70's and early 80's. I guess I was about 14 or so when I got my little paws on this one. I was enticed and excited, much as I was by other sci-fi novels back then, but it was only when I began reading Gibson and Walter John many years later that I began to recall ... dated, of course, and Brunner's characters are all very much 1950-70's type characters, very neurotic and uptight. (People are not so much like that any more, of course ;-). They are now just whacked, or stupid.)

And it is amusing to see Brunner's future world where everybody logs into a massive mainframe for the entire continent. It's amusing to think maybe we could have gone that route technologically; a central monolithic network instead of a zillion anarchistic distributed networks. Then perhaps Windows would be the "good guys" and Nix would be the "Evil Empire!"

In this techno-dystopian novel, it seems the wrong people have been given root privileges. And although the word "hacker" had not been invented yet, our protagonist is indeed an anti-social computer whiz/underachiever, who devises a virus that ... well, enough spoiling for today. Read teh book!

And if you enjoyed this, consider looking at the "Future Shock" trilogy by Alvin Toffler, a major inspiration to Brunner, both intellectually and stylistically, and Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up," his other greatest novel -- one of very many, as Brunner was very prolific.

2 out of 5 stars Prescient but dated.......2002-03-31

Although I can certainly understand the appeal of this groudbreaking precambrian cyberpunk novel, the story and language are hopelessly dated to a modern reader. In a way the book reminded me of an Ayn Rand novel; good ideas stuck between pages upon pages of confusing and ridiculous dialog spewed by one-dimensional characters.

    5 out of 5 stars I demand a reprint.......2001-11-28

Little is to be added to the other reviews. This 28-year old book not only decribed the internet as it will become very soon long before its inception, but computer viruses (called "worms" by Brunner) before the first PC too, plus a few other things and issues not even mentioned yet.
Since a friend gave it to me to read many years ago, I've bought every copy of it I could find. I have kept one German and one English version and as I will not let them out of my bookshelf under no circumstances I gave all others away as gifts, still looking for more copies to give away.
It has been sold out so often and for such a long time, each time and in each of those two languages available to me, that if one were to be a follower of conspiracy theories, well, the fact that this book is not reprinted as often as some other books of Brunner are would be reason for suspicion.

Is capitalism Christian? Is there a Christian perspective on business? How should a Christian use power in the workplace? In addressing such difficult questions as these, Business Through the Eyes of Faith demonstrates how God can dwell at the center of one's life even in the secular marketplace.

Here is pragmatic affirmation of the role that committed Christians can play in the business world. The authors stress the connections between Christian principles and good management and provide biblical passages that support their principles and relate them to the practical issues faced by Christian managers. Issues such as employee motivation, workplace communication, business leadership, the role of profit, and social responsibility are all addressed in concrete terms and reinforced by short vignettes, suggested biblical passages to explore, and commentaries from contemporary theorists and practitioners.

Business Through the Eyes of Faith shows that business can and should be a reflection of God's kingdom. It is an invaluable resource for Christian business students, managers, and those who wish to understand the concerns and motives of Christians in the business world.

Do not let the slim size of this collection put you off. The recipies are first class. Try the "Dark Chocolate" or the "Pistachio". Homemade ice cream, especially mixes using eggs and cream, are a form of pastry cooking. Fresh is always better.

The twenty-seven articles presented in this volume mark the first stage of an international research project set up after the comprehensive reorganization of the International Institute of Social History in 1987. Included in this study are papers by experts on as many countries (both European and non-European) as possible with a modern labour movement: Britain, Belgium The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, The Czech Workers' Movement in the Habsburg Empire, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, The Jewish Workers' Movement in the Russian Empire, Poland, Finland, United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, and Japan.

There is nothing like the business card to challenge a designer's abilities. Creating a clear and effective message in a small space is not easy; it takes creativity and often moments of brilliance. This new volume in the best-selling "Best of Business Card Design" series showcases moments of brilliance in graphic design.

Selected from thousands of entries, this volume presents hundreds of new business card designs from top international designers.

Each card is presented in color, at the actual size or larger, providing detail of design unmatched by other business card design books.

Informative caption text references designers and clients as well as the design process and special techniques and materials used in the creation of each card.

                                        1 out of 5 stars poor quality.......2000-08-22

Business cards in this book generally lack any quality of design and would appear to have paid to have their work published...not a good resource if you are looking for quality innovative design...

3 out of 5 stars it doedn't have subject order.......1999-11-03

i am not completely content, because i can't find all the cards for one theme (e.x. graphic designers) in one area specific of this book.
