Book Description

While editing Grow Old Along with Me-The Best Is Yet to Be, I reflected on how this anthology differs from its predecessor, When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple. The answer is found, I feel, in both the social changes that have occurred in the last ten years and in the changed perspectives of the writers. Much of the material in When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple was written in the early eighties. About half of the writers in the collection were in their mid-forties or younger, women my age. They painted tender word pictures of mothers and grandmothers and older women friends. They, and I, viewed aging earnestly, poignantly, tenderly-and with a certain distance.

Today my generation is firmly entrenched in middle age, marching stalwartly ahead of the baby boomers. Two-thirds of the women writers whose work was selected for Grow Old Along with Me are over fifty; one-third are over sixty. This is our story now: our age spots, our menopause, our arthritic bones.

Our expectations about growing older have shifted dramatically in the last decade, influenced by the prospect of longer life spans, increased awareness of health and fitness, more positive media images of older women, and the changed perceptions of women's roles in a world that grew out of the social movements of the sixties and seventies. We expect to be taken more seriously-by politicians, by the medical community, by our religious leaders, by our families. But we also demand the freedom to take life less seriously-to be unconventional, to flaunt our grey hair and wrinkles, to be age proud. It's an exciting time to be an older woman.

Compiling Grow Old Along with Me also provided the opportunity to look at another perspective on aging: how men feel about growing older. Over the last several years an increasing number of men have attended anthology readings around the country. Their level of interest in the issues discussed and their enthusiasm about participating in this type of emotionally evocative exploration of aging prompted me to broaden the scope to include both men and women.

For most of my editorial life, my work has focused on women writers and women's issues. I wasn't sure what kind of material to expect from male writers. Any assumptions I had, however, were challenged by my commitment to keep an open ear, an open heart.

In the end the differences between what men and women had to say about aging were minor. The men in the stories and poems seemed a little more likely to define themselves through their work, to be more reflective about the mark they felt they had (or had not) made on the world, or to be more anxious about retirement and what they would do with their lives afterward. But these issues also surfaced for some of the women. The women in the stories and poems generally seemed better prepared for their old age, more excited about new beginnings as family structures shifted. Yet there were also men on the brink of new adventures and experiencing new personal insights. Particularly satisfying were the writers who spoke from the other side's point of view-men writing about women and women writing about men-the result, perhaps, of writers who are really caring listeners.

Common threads ran throughout the material: the need to be loved, the importance of family connections, an acceptance of the aging process. There were observable differences when the writings were grouped by age of the characters in the stories. Self-assessment, both physical and psychological, was most likely to emerge in the stories and poems depicting people in their fifties and early sixties. Those in their late sixties and seventies often focused on letting go, retirement, loss of life partners. The very old were especially eloquent when celebrating life's simplicity.

It is hard to find the right words to describe the photographs. Beautiful. Courageous. Tender. Vigorous. Joyful. They stand alone as visual poems. They complement and illuminate the text. The work would not be the same without them.

These writers and photographers leave me challenged and eager to greet the future. I invite you, dear reader, to "Grow old along with me-the best is yet to be." END

1 out of 5 stars Grow old along with me the best is yet to be.......2006-02-06

I hated this book. I thought it would be pleasant and uplifting poems/stories about growing old and instead the poems/stories were so depressing that I felt crushing despair. I would never recommend this book to anyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this book for my father and he loved it........1999-05-20

It's hard to buy for my father but when I read this book I knew he would love it. It was so real. He just turned 50 a couple of years ago and he was so down. I wanted some way to let him know that he was still a very important part of my life. The poems are just fantastic. You can understand them. And they are about real life.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful gift for weddings and annivesaries........1999-04-02

I bought this book for my parent's anniversary and had to read it myself before I gave it to them. It touched my heart. My favorite story was about an older man who washes his wife's hair and has since they were first married. It was so beautiful that I cried. I also enjoyed the poems and photographs. Some of them reminded me of my grandparents. I always enjoy the books from Papier-Mache.

This is a beautifully crafted book of verses

I purchased this book for my elderly mother as it typified her approach to life. She would be forever quoting sections from the book as her behaviour reflected a phrase or section from it. (and yes - she did wear purple!)

It is a gentle reflection on ageing and how too often in our younger years we are driven by fad and fashion. I would thouroughly recommend it to anyone who has elderly parents - and to the parents themselves.

Lex Luthor, legend in his own lunchtime? Anti-hero? This is the general theme, here. His obsessions and what happens to the people around him because of them. Lex is seeing himself as savior of the people from the alien in a big way, here. Of course he gets another beautiful female assistant slaughtered in the midst of his mania.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing and great look at Lex Luthor.......2006-08-14

Lex Luthor - Man of Steel is a great look inside the mind of Superman's greatest foe and one of the DC Universe's most intriguing and interesting villains. In fact, Brian Azzarello writes this story of Lex Luthor with the goal of showing the complexity of what makes Lex Luthor tick. Azzarello posits the idea of Lex Luthor not being the sociopathic villain whose quest to destroy Superman has become almost Ahab-like in its intensity. No, Luthor in this book is made out to be less a villain but a champion of humanity against what he sees as the stagnating and tyrannical effect of Superman on the human race.

He sees Superman as a super-powerful being of alien origin whose seeming similarity to looking like a human is just a disguise to hide what he suspects as something whose very presence will lead to humanity's downfall. Even the way Superman is drawn by Lee Bermejo as seen by Luthor looks like some sort of demonic being whose glowing red eyes make him more villain than superhero. Azzarello's book doesn't make Luthor into a hero for he still makes decisions which seem to be that of a sociopath than a hero for the people. His hiring of the pedophilic Toyman is one example of the true nature of Luthor showing through just enough beneath the image the man himself has deluded his own self into believing.

One could make the point that Lex Luthor - Man of Steel is a story of one man's delusions of heroic grandeur and a messianic complex. He sees everyone around him as less than his equal thus putting the onus of saving the world from the likes of Superman on his own shoulders. He even sees Bruce Wayne as less the philantrophic businessman but more as a rogue who only does things for his own selfish needs. No, in this book Lex Luthor sees himself as the only person who has the will and the mind to do what is best for humanity even if they don't appreciate him for it.

Azzarello really hits every note in making Lex Luthor both heroic and villainous in this story. He has written a tale of a man's obsession with the downfall of a superhero get to the point that reality has almost become warped in this man's mind. Lee Bermejo's beautiful near photorealistic artwork works very well with Azzarello's story. I also like the small details of how Luthor truly sees Superman. From the glowing red eyes and the use of bleached out colors of Superman's costume. Gone is the red, white and blue colors of the costume and in its place are colors closer to black and red.

Lex Luthor - Man of Steel is a great and intriguing graphic novel by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo delving into the complex and, ultimately, fracturing mind of Lex Luthor. I didn't think it was possible, but these two artists have made Luthor both sympathetic and reviled in the same book in equal amounts. I highly recommend this book to fans of the DC Universe and its characters.

4 out of 5 stars Lex Luthor - good or bad?.......2006-04-12

I found this very confusing, disturbing, and unsatisfying - and yet brilliant. Confusing because events were taking place that had no explanation whatever. They were almost like dream sequences, as in the case of the duel between Batman and Superman. And yet it must have been real because at the end of the sequence when Bruce makes the call to Lex, Bruce is sitting in his cave, his face beaten and bloody. I didn't want to think it was real because, unless I missed something somewhere, Batman and Superman do not hate each other as much as they did here. It was unwarranted and unexplained. The same with the origin of Hope. Where did she come from? Was she an A.I., spawned from some stolen DNA from Superman? Again, no explanation. A few things disturbed me - Azzarello's depiction of Superman as just an "alien". Granted this is Lex's story, and we're seeing Superman through his eyes, and what a disturbing image he is. Teeth baring and eyes always glowing red. I have to highly praise the artwork though. Lee Bermejo is an awesome, awesome artist. You are so drawn into this book just by the artwork alone and the coloring is beautiful and sets the mood perfectly. Azzarello's prose is intriguing, intelligent, and witty. Too bad the story itself didn't make more sense. You do really get into the brain of Lex Luthor though and according to Azzarello, Lex is a very lonely, isolated, twisted man. And yet, the writing and the artwork combined make us almost feel sorry for him and admire him when he really does try to be a nice guy and, in his eyes, do good. There's good and bad in Lex Luthor just like there is in all of us. I would recommend this book and can guarantee that you will read it several times. It's impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2006-03-29

I was hoping for something better than Brian's last series with Jim Lee (Superman: For Tomorrow) but this turned out to be nearly as confusing as his earlier work. Brian has tried to something different (as with Superman in For Tomorrow) but I am not sure he succeeded. The end was kind of a let down and what happened with Bruce and Lex I've never understood... why was Supes fighting with Bats.
Brian once again brings in his character Mr. Orr and tries to infuse him with some traits that should have made him more interesting but all I could think was "He looks like Jim Gordon!" so kinda distracting.

The art is well... good but I guess it has to grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars How Bad is the Bad Guy.......2006-01-30

This is certainly not your typical Superhero comic. It takes a look at Superman's arch-nemesis and why he hates Superman so much. Lex Luthor comes across as being very intelligent man who is scared (or jealous, mayhaps?) of Superman and what he represents, and as a result takes actions that have a high cost. But do the ends truly justify the means?

If you're looking for a good old action-packed Superhero comic, this isn't it, but if you dig complex villains, this is a good choice

          5 out of 5 stars Stunning achievment.......2004-10-25

In principle I am oppose dot a book like this. It takes some of teh key Old Testament stories and imaginatively looks at them from a different angle. The last thing a small child needs is to be confused about what the inspired Word reports. So this book needs to be read to kids with care. Make sure they know this is fiction not Scripture.

BUT it is often breathtaking in its narrative power. Schmidt will look at David and Goliath's fateful day from the perspective of a fictional shield-bearer for the giant. The bearer is resentful of the borish Goliath and then terrified by David... and David's God. The scene ends with him hiding behind a rock in the rain, weeping.

This is about the most engrossing children's Bible story book I have ever seen. The illustrations are as interesting as the stories.

I'm a big fan of Ms. Ely's book, Saving Dinner, so I was very excited to find her study guide for kids. However, I was disappointed to open the box and find only 32 one-sided pages, loose with no binding at all. Of these, only 21 pages are worksheets and parent guides--the rest are a food diary! It's cleverly designed and kid-friendly, but not worth $8.95! In addition, the information is heavily weighted toward identifying carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Good info for kids, but I was hoping to steer my picky eater toward fruits and veggies and there was little information on the their benefits.

My 12 yr-old son really enjoyed the study. He is now reading labels, asking questions, and drinking more water!

The parent pages are very helpful. I enjoyed the websites and books that Leanne recommends, along with the idea of the kids creating their own cookbook. The study is very-well planned and easy to implement.

5 out of 5 stars It's Fun to be Healthy.......2001-05-21

This unit study is written in a way kids can understand nutrition and WANT to eat healthy foods. You must have the Healthy Foods Cookbook to go along with it. Mom (or teacher) goes over the info in the cookbook and the children have short work pages in the Unit Study to fill in. Leanne Ely writes in such a humerous style, it makes the study fun!

1 out of 5 stars Majority was on Fox and Parrish prints only........2003-02-05

I was mislead by the title, I thought I was getting hundreds of
artist and examples of their prints, but the book is on Parrish and Fox with a couple of other artist thrown in. Not at all what I was
          looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book an American Prints.......1999-08-07

This book covers 6 american artists from the turn of the century and includes important facts for each. It covers prices, condition, histories of the artists and much, much more. I like the way the book is laid out, it is easy to follow and understand. I judge collecting type books on how much I can learn and retain and I have learned a lot from this one. I highly recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Woodcarver's Handbook by Graham R. Bull.......2003-09-05

This book is a very good instructive book for people who are just getting into the art of wood carving. I also feel that even for the Experienced carver its a pretty good book to read over. Everything is laid out well and there is instructive patterns for new carvers to do and follow along as you read through the book. I read the book from cover to cover and was pleased with what they explained in the book. The only down fall about this book is that they kept saying a few things in the book over and over instilling some of the key points of what any wood carver Should follow. Thats where My Four star rating came into play. I feel talking about it about one or two times is more than enough. Other than that its a great book to add to any wood carvers collection. They also have some good instructive material on woods that can be carved how to sharpen your tools ect.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners and old hands alike........2003-03-14

Great book, lots of information for all skill levels of carvers. Worth the price. I have used this book for sharping, carving patterns, ideals and tools you need. It is an easy read.

              Book Description

An American Focus celebrates the exceptional and extensive Anderson Graphic Arts Collection of prints, multiples, and monotypes by major contemporary American artists. The collection spans more than thirty years of print production from 1962 to 1998, surveying the American printmaking renaissance with outstanding examples of print processes--woodcut, intaglio, lithography, screenprint, and monotype--from major fine-art presses. "The best" was long held as a criterion by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Anderson in acquiring works of art, and this selection of 192 works from their collection--now housed with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco--admirably reflects their collecting strategy.
This volume and the exhibition it accompanies offer the public a rare opportunity to view works on paper by many of the best-known contemporary artists, including Richard Diebenkorn, Kiki Smith, Jasper Johns, Elizabeth Murray, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Josef Albers, Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, and many others representing both the East and West Coasts. The works are presented in chronological order and organized into four sections, each corresponding to the decade in which the works were produced, from the 1960s to the 1990s.
Karin Breuer introduces each of the sections and describes important events and trends in American print history; she has also contributed an essay on the story behind the renowned Anderson Collection as well as an illustrated chronology of American printmaking from 1945 to the present. With the addition of a fully illustrated checklist of the 192 works, this volume is essential reading for everyone interested in contemporary American art and printmaking.
