Whatever they don't have, they want -- and whatever these women want, they get. Once, they lived in the shadows of their famous husbands. Now, Hollywood wives will stop at nothing for their chance in the spotlight. Today, there are no limits to their passions -- or their excesses. Today, there are all new rules to the power game. And as megastar Lissa Roman is about to discover, the game itself can exact a deadly price.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the read!.......2004-08-25
One of the reasons I've found Jackie Collins to be such an enjoyable author is that she creates memorable characters. Her novels, usually are loaded with characters that you'd like to know and those that you'd like to take down a few pegs.
Not so the case with HOLLYWOOD WIVES-THE NEXT GENERATION. The characters are boring, predictable, shallow, and totally not Jackie Collins.
Don't waste your money or your time.
Glamorous and Glossy!.......2004-04-19
It may of been trashy, brainless, tawdry melodrama but I loved this book! Jackie takes all the stereotypes of Hollywood celebrities and throws them together into a glamor-packed soup of gossip and subplots! Like a 500-page tabloid! The characters are all true-to-form spoiled, self-obsessed divas. The goings on are appropriately scandalous. The many talents and many husbands, the wild rich kids, the gay followers, it's all here!
The perfect Hollywood novel it may not have much substance but since that's what's expected of its subjects it's just perfect!
Often imitated, never duplicated...........2003-12-23
As a huge fan of Jackie Collins, I was eagerly awaiting this novel. It was written in her distinctive style, which has been imitated often. I was a tad disappointed that the plot strayed so far from the original Hollywood Wives tome, but was happy to renew my aquaintance with some old friends...er, charcters. Thought the slang was a lttle overdone, however. I'm 22, and swear I don't speak like that! Was a great read for a true Jackie Collins fan, and one I know I'll enjoy reading again.
A Fun Read.......2003-10-23
I had this book in my pile of books waiting to be read, don't know why I didn't get to it sooner. I loved all the characters in this book, I wanted so much for everyone to get what they wanted and the jerks to get what they deserve, the only complaint I have about this book is that the ending was to rushed but all in all a fun read.
Happy Reading
Lisa
Is Jackie Capable Of Writing Anything Else?.......2003-10-22
I read one of her earlier books and then decided to get this one at the library. I am glad I didn't waste my money buying it. Her books are all the same. Beautiful people, beautiful people having affairs, beautiful people in danger, beautiful people living happily ever after. She seriously needs to get out of Hollywood. I couldn't even finish this book it was putting me asleep. I don't think she can write any other type of book, she uses the same formula in all her books. At least other writers change locations and occupations of people. Does she think the rest of America and the world is so wrapped up in Hollywood and what goes on there like she is? If you must read this book get it at the library. Don't waste your money.

Hollywood Losers.......2006-07-10
Hollywood Wives is about a screenwriter, director, producer, aging movie star, and struggling actor struggling to make a movie. The lives of the actors' wives are tediously depicted. There is also a random, out of place subplot about a crazed murderer. The haphazard plot is the least of this book's problems. Many of the characters are so sketchily and superfically depicted that it is difficult to discern one character from another. Collins must have been ensconced in her Beverly Hills mansion for the past fifty years, for she has no ear for dialogue. The hardened teenage prostitute speaks like a migrant farmer from The Grapes of Wrath: "Hey, you lookin' for some fun, buster?"; "These two black cats riped me off, but I got away from 'em." Then there's the French born Bibi, who talks not with a French accent, but like a four year old: "How you together? Last night he together with Gina. I sorry darling, you make a mistake." The sex scenes are revolting, and the sentences are written without 10th grade proficiency. Worst of all is the depiction of nearly every gay character as a pervert or murderer. Combine this with a preposterous ending and you have one big loser of a book. If you're looking for a fun beach book, you can do better than this.
The Jane Austen of the defiantly trashy novel.......2006-01-19
Jackie Collins novels are the sugar cereal of the book set. Sure, the whole grain, all natural cereals are better for you and are in themselves pretty tasty but once in a while you need a box of sugary, artifically flavored cereal and should feel no guilt about it.
Hollywood Wives is an absorbing novel about the intersecting lives of a number of people. Is it realistic? Maybe not, but it certainly isn't boring. The book was originally released in 1983 (and even despite that, it has a very late 70's vibe of free loves and drugs without much thought of the consequences), and while the fashion choices seem funny by today's standards, most of the book could take place in the present.
If this book had been in less capable hands, it probably wouldn't have been as much fun; Collins has a way of throwing out a ridiculous situation in a very believable manner as well as delivering a series of minor detonations throughout the text before the main reveal, and I eagerly awaited to see when all hell would break loose. And while Collins' writing style is not up to that of say Stephen King or Richard Russo, she is heads above Dan Brown and James Patterson.
Great fun.
THE epitome of Jackie Collins.......2005-12-12
Historically, this was Jackie Collin's fourth novel (the bestselling "The World is Full of Married Men", "The Stud" and "The Bitch" having preceded it) and is, to date, her most successful, selling 15 million copies.
Having invented the "Hollywood" novel, Collins is at the top of her raunchy game with this thrilling tale of sex, drugs, money, revenge, ambition, sex, marriage, crime, hate, sex, family, entertainment, desperation and, of course, sex.
Featuring:
Elaine Conti-A Brooklyn babe turned Hollywood hostess, desperate to stay at the top with a marriage crumbling beneath her.
Ross Conti-A Hollywood star burning out, hitting 50 without a viable career in a town that has little pity.
Niel Gray-An alcoholic, top director caught in a seductive web.
Buddy Hudson-A Los Angeles hustler with ambitions of hitting it big and having it all, regardless of his past life and his wife.
Montana Gray-A woman determined to break the glass ceiling of Hollywood studios.
And a litany of other showstopping characters, all contributing another facet to the brilliant diamond that is "Hollywood Wives"

Book Description
In the fourth novel in the Celtic-inspired Witches of Eileanan series, a young girl comes of age-and discovers her abilities when she is called to aid her kingdom.
Praise for The Witches of Eileanan:
More depth and imagination than others in this field ...a rich tapestry of settings, creatures, and people...I'd encourage you to read [it]. (Australian SF Online)
Quite original, with unexpected depths and plenty of fun...a strong novel. (Locus)
Forsyth spices up a suitably complex power struggle with vividly depicted imagery and a worthy heroine...a most interesting fantasy series. (Romantic Times)
Excellent...I was impressed by Forsyth's command of the language and her ability to create such a detailed world...had me absorbed in the end. (The SF Site)
Customer Reviews:
I got sucked into thesse books.......2007-05-29
The most annoying thing about these books is that the author writes in a brogue that is really over done in some parts and not bad in others. The story line is really solid, but the writing leaves something to be desired.
Finn, period.......2005-09-21
Thus far, out of the first four, this is the best. Kate Forsyth has managed to create a late teen female character who literally makes sailors blush; when she's not picking their pockets. No mother has had a more troubling child and future noble - mission impossible. The author manages this, while still retaining a G rating. Don't buy this book for its plot, theme or propensity to pressure Hemingway. It's a simple book and you read it because Kate has a light and fun time creating a rich and fantastic CHARACTER. The character language is outstanding as well. It matters little where Kate takes you if you find yourself continually enjoying the trip.
A Slightly Startling Departure from Formula.......2005-04-12
When I read the back of this book, I was surprised. I expected a continuation of the story that I had read thus far in the first three books in this series, something along the same lines of what I had already read. While this did continue the story, it was different from what I was expecting, focusing on one character, Finn, rather than on all of them.
As I read the story, I got caught up in what was happening, but at the beginning of the book, it felt a little bit like a cop out. I couldn't help but feeling that Forsyth knew she needed to wrap up the other lose ends that she had left open, but that she wasn't sure how she wanted to do most of it, so she just focused on one thing, one small set of characters. It was a little frustrating.
The author's note in the back of the book assures readers that Isabeau will return in the next novel, which takes place at the same time as this book. I can't help but wonder why, if they're taking place at the same time, it wasn't interspersed in one (or two) books, moving between the story lines, as she had done in the first three books.
I think that the one thing that saved this book for me was that it focused on Finn, who was my favorite minor character in books two and three. I was glad to see her get a bigger roll and I enjoyed learning more about her. That made it more bearable to have to wait to find out what was happening with Isabeau, Iseult, and Lachlan.
Because of the single-minded focus on one storyline, ignoring the other things that I knew had to be happening at the same time, this is my least favorite of the books in this series thus far.
The other problem that I had with this book was the lack of a map in the front. I wanted one with the other books in the series too, but this one focuses on them traveling and I was so confused as to where they were going, or even what direction they were going. I kept trying to picture where the various mentioned mountain ranges, seas, marshes, etc. were, but I was unable to, and it was frustrating. I'm a big believer in having maps in all books that are set on imaginary worlds.
That said, there were things about this book that I liked. As I said above, I enjoyed the further development of Finn as a character. I also liked a lot of the other characters, and how it was shown that the Fairgean weren't just the evil, scheming faeries that they had been made out to be. I loved learning more about the Nix. I liked how some of the other characters grew in power and discovered what they were capable of doing.
By the end, I was satisfied with the story and how it related to the rest of the series when some of the other characters made an appearance at the end of the book. I can sort-of see Forsyth's logic in focusing just on Finn's story, because it was complicated and involved a lot of traveling and character development. Perhaps interweaving the other storyline with it would have made things unnecessarily complicated. Still, I felt a little cheated that I didn't get to read about some of the other characters that I had grown to love.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first three books in the series.
What a disappointment.......2004-08-05
Unlike others that have reviewed The Forbidden Land, I must be the black sheep and only give it 2 stars. I couldn't understand why Kate Forsyth would switch perspectives on us like that without warning. And why pick Finn to write about? She was an unworthy subject. I found it difficult to relate to Finn as a protagonist, and forgive me for being blunt, but I thought she was a twit and just wanted her to go away. I also thought it was a dirty trick for the author to leave Isabeau out of this book.
However, in all fairness, Ms. Forsyth does write beautifully. Perhaps my criticism is too harsh, considering I never made it all the way through the book and allowed myself to be lead where Ms. Forsyth wanted to lead me. I struggled with this book, but halfway through gave up and went on to The Skull of the World.
Finn the Cat.........2004-04-26
This was a great side story. It really helped you get to know Finn better. It also went a little more indepth of why Dide acts the way he does. I feel like these characters are my friends. I don't ever want to part with them. It's such a good read!
Customer Reviews:
Not bad........2005-11-24
Bronwyn Carlton, The Books of Faerie: Auberon's Tale (DC Comics, 1999)
Carlton brings us some backstory about Auberon, King of Faerie. Not a necessary addition to the Sandman universe, but an appreciated one. Like the Books of Magic, Gaiman's disappearance from the spinoffs as head writer has affected them negatively, but they're still above average.
Along with the Auberon-as-youth tale, there's a Tim Hunter piece from John Ney Rieber, which will no doubt be of interest to those following the Books of Magic. This one came off somewhat confusing (even though I had a general idea of what was going on, the specifics eluded me until the closing pages). I had originally wondered why this wasn't in one of the Books of Magic collections, and I now harbor a sneaking suspicion that it's because it's simply not as good as the Books of Magic stuff.
Still, like all things Sandman, this is worth reading. ***
Nice to have background info........2005-10-11
Bronwyn Carlton, The Books of Faerie (DC Comics, 1998)
Having made it roughly halfway through the Sandman series, I figured it was high time to start checking out the spinoffs, The Books of Magic and The Books of Faerie. Turned out to be a good idea, on both counts.
The Books of Faerie, at least this volume, comprises two tales-- that of how Titania came to be Queen of Faerie, and another regarding a quest to go find Tim Hunter and bring him to Faerie originally published as Arcana Annual #1. While those who haven't yet picked up the Sandman or Books of Magic series are urged to read at least a way into those first, The Books of Faerie are quite a treat for those who have wandered off into the thick layers of mythology and symbolism Neil Gaiman imbued both series with.
As with the whole extended series of graphic novels of which this is but a part, The Books of Faerie is a treat well worth savoring. *** ½
if you like the books of magic.......2004-01-22
This book is wonderful! It really begins to make sense of why Auberon is such a distant character in the rest of the stories
The art work is wonderful to look at and the story line is wonderful.
I had to read it a few times to fully understand, but once it clicks the book is wonderful.
I fully recomend this book to those who like the series!
If you like Neil Gaiman..........2002-01-16
Then this book is for you. This is a good follow up to the first trade paperback in the series, but can also stand on its own. The artwork is very good overall and detailed, consistent with Sandman and Books of Magic.
So many things make sense now........2001-08-23
I've been reading through the Books of Magic series of graphic-novel compilations, and getting them in an odd order occasionally (based on what I can find when). Reading this volume made much of one particular volume of the Books of Magic make incredible amounts of sense - it's the backstory, the story that happens between the volumes. It also, however, stands on its own quite well. If you like Neil Gaiman, Emma Bull, or modern fantasy and fairy tales at all, I highly recommend this. A lovely fey tale, full of magic, betrayal, and secrets.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
The Way revealed!.......2000-01-30
Master Ni, Hua Ching is the diffinative authority on Taoist Integral science. With the Esoteric Tao Te Ching, he presents the core of Taoist philosophy for modern people to consider. This elucitation of the ancient way is clear and precise. It is a fundamental tool for achieveing what the Ancient Chinese called 'Wu Wei' or non-doing. This book takes phenomenal bounds by presenting Lao Tzu's idea of self-government and a eutopiean society. It reveals the way and how to reach it. Having read many translations of the Tao Te Ching, I find this one to be top shelf material.
A translation/commentary...........1999-12-13
This doesn't read like most translations of the Tao Teh Ching (and I have translations of both the traditional text and the text discovered in the Xian tombs). However, I like what he has to say, and when I check his "translations" against a more traditional, literal translation, the two together make a lot of sense (he shed a lot of light on an otherwise incomprehensible literal translation in another book). I think what he is doing is therefore more of a paraphrase than a direct translation, a paraphrase that is an extremely concise commentary. So I think his approach is valid. You don't need to have another version of the Tao Te Ching to follow along, by the way. In reviews of other books by Ni, he is accused of being new age or self taught. I don't know about the new age part, but somewhere in this book he inasmuch acknowledges he is "self taught" and that is not a problem for me. Maybe Lao Tse was self taught, too. I find this book very helpful.

Malt extract.......2007-08-07
This is a great book for those just starting out and wondering what beer is and how to make it. It shows you the fastest easiest ways to make 5 gallons of OK beer. I made the mistake of not researching this book because I want to brew all-grain like my buddy who I've been helping brew all-grain for a while. All grain means there's no malt extract, you put the grains in hot water yourself and then extract the water and boil that. It's good for people who want to start brewing something, but sooner or later people always seem to find more passion and creativity in the mash tun. Especially in America where everything is extreme!

Book Description
This study examines the emergence and early history of copyright in Venice and Rome, focusing in particular on the privilegio and the use made of it by printers, publishers, engravers, painters, architects, mapmakers, and others in the sixteenth century to protect their commercial interests in various types of printed images. These include separately sold engravings, woodcuts, and etchings, as well as illustrations in books.
The first part of the book surveys printmaking and the privilegio in sixteenth-century Venice and Rome together with the related issues of licensing and censorship. The second part documents many of the recipients who were granted the privilegio.
The book introduces the reader to the richly competitive world of printmaking and print publishing in Renaissance Italy.

"Once you have successfully stencilled your first petal," declares Patricia Meehan, "you can go on to stencil the whole garden. The techniques are the same no matter how complex your design." Meehan's book lives up to this promise: her elaborate-looking stencil designs are surprisingly simple, and though she does not provide step-by-step directions, she does offer a multitude of wonderful stencil patterns and countless good ideas for utilizing them around the home. Stencil some heraldic designs around the den, for instance; brighten the atmosphere with a mass of glowing candles (without the fire hazard); add a vibrant flower border to the floor; or fill a child's wall with charming dancing mice. Meehan's striking patterns and eye-catching colors are a delight to browse through, and she shows many finished rooms so readers can see the designs in context. As the title indicates, this is not so much a how-to guide as a font of inspiration, and even novice stencilers with the right amount of patience and practice can produce very attractive stenciling by taking their cues from Meehan's highly creative approach. --Amy Handy

this book was great I thought Davids book was good but this one is much better and very very interesting. I think Billy was honest in telling his story even the part about Elvis taking his wife from him. it is just a very good read for all Elvis fans!
Elvis & Billy Stanley - good read!.......2004-07-19
I found this book to be rather interesting. It's obvious that Elvis had a special relationship with his step-brothers. All Elvis fans should read this book. Why are so many people jealous of the Stanley boys and Dee Presley? They give these bad reviews of the books they wrote. I'm sure they would have loved to be in their place. And what a good way to honor their brother by writing a book. At least they didn't make Elvis look like a monster as Priscilla Presley did in her book, Elvis & Me!
A STEPBROTHER OF A BOOK.......2003-09-14
I enjoyed this book and so I gave it a star boost in spite of being boring and without depth. Billy is open and candid, but the story ranbles. the big bombshell is that Elvis took his wife (and others) to bed. once that comes and goes it's a whitefish. It's not like Billy penned this tome, so it's on the writers. The book ended strong and the writer should have explored the turmoil more intently. It felt like it was slapped together to be ready in time for the holidays. It's too chronicled and stiff. It reads like "Elvis and me got a pizza; Elvis and me watched T.V." And way way more about hot rods than needed unless it was a book about hot rods. I learned more about the Stanley bros reading the novel AROUND ELVIS. Billy, not only wasn't the star running back on the Hillcrest High football team, he didn't even play for the team. Not only that, he and Ricky were the waterboys!!! None of the brothers ever played on the team. Shame on you Billy! And how come you never told how you were arrested by the Constable of Desoto County, T. Burma Hobbs for taking a leak behind a liquor store? Billy Stanley!! I would recommend this book, because he did have a unique perspective of Elvis' life that manages to peak through now and then and it has moments that are absolutely charming.
