Book Description
During the last ten years of his life, Anton Chekhov penned his great plays, spent time treating the sick, and wrote a small number of stories that are considered his masterpieces. The eleven stories collected here-"The Lady with the Little Dog," "The House with the Mezzanine," "My Life," "Peasants," "A Visit to Friends," "Ionych," "About Love," "In the Ravine," "The Bishop," "The Bride," and "Disturbing the Balance"-hail from this fertile period. They reveal a writer who, in response to the techniques of Symbolism and Impressionism, moved beyond nineteenth-century realism to become an innovator of the modern short story, influencing such key twentieth-century literary figures as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.
Customer Reviews:
A superb translation.......2005-04-01
These stories translated in this volume by Ronald Wilks are really superb. When one compares the translation of "The Lady with the Dog" with the earlier translation by Constance Garnett, the differences are apparent. Please compare them. The Wilks translation is high quality beautiful English expression, it captures the mood and the ideas of Chekhov perfectly.

Ehh..........2007-07-30
I craved for a fantasy read and stumbled onto Piers Anthony (my first time reading him) and who could turn down a book titled Zombie Lover? Our 15-year-old, black wave hero Breanna takes the reader on a tour of Xanth (and other worlds) as she runs from a zombie king in a Snow White kissed awake tale gone wrong. Along the way she picks up many delightful characters and intrigue continues. I was a bit turned off as Anthony insists on explaining all of his puns to the reader and the end of the book was rather predictable (i.e. I mostly skimmed the last 40-pages or so). I was really turned off at the never ending smorgasbord of [...] and bottoms and poorly done sexual quips. In addition, half of my love for fantasy tends to be the cover art and I was hugely disappointed that Breanna was depicted as a slightly tan white girl rather than the black girl she's described as in the story. Additionally, Anthony's commentary on race seemed very superficial and uninformed. Overall it was a fun "bad" read but one I definitely had political problems with.
Can't put it down.......2006-01-06
When I read any of the books from the xanth series I forget to sleep I just stay up and read till it is done I love these books I just finished this one for the 2nd time different style then most of his previous books but still a great one to read! Read em all you will love them!
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better in Xanth.......2002-10-11
Now look, I know Piers Anthony is a great author. I've read his Incarnation of Immortality series, all the Xanth books, the Mode books, and the Apprentice Adept series. But this, I have to say, is the best of the bunch. What do you get when you cross a young black Mundane with a magical talent, a 130 year old man who was transformed into a tree, three kings, and a mess of zombies? Believe it or not, one of the best surprises to come into Xanth in years, thanks to the devious plotting of Good Magician Humphrey, Clio the Muse, and everybody's favorite elf, Jenny of the World of Two Moons. For all of us raised on fairy tales, this one beats them all.
Good bookýif you haven't read the others in the series........2001-12-22
I enjoyed this book, and even bought it instead of borrowing from the library. But for a faithful Xanth fan, it is a little disappointing. The earlier books were gems. The middle ones were fun. But lately the quality of the plot (not the writing) has gone down. There is still hope for Xanth, though; I read a few Tamora Pierce books like Wolf Speaker and The Woman Who Rides Like A Man which didn't live up to my expectations of her, then WHAM! she retaliates with Emperor Mage and Lioness Rampant. Don't despair, friends: Xanth is not lost forever! In the meantime, check out Tamora Pierce and Gath Nix.
Enough with the Adult Conspiracy!.......2001-07-25
The Xanth series is what got me reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. Its a shame this series has turned into unreadable mush.
Zombie Lover was the last book I've bought in this series and I don't think I'll continue with it. I can't take in anymore stories of adolescents thinking about who they want or don't want to have sex with.

David Drake does the Norse Myths.......2005-04-06
I've read just about everything that Mr. Drake has written,
at least twice, and I think this may possibly be his best work.
It's definitely not normal SF, like "Killer" nor alternate-
history SF, like "Ranks of Bronze", nor yet sword-and-sorcery
fantasy like "the Lord of the Isles" books.
It's mythology. He wrote it after spending time in Iceland
reading the Prose Edda, and he accomplished exceptionally
well exactly what he wanted to do. He translated the Norse
Myths into what we call "Science" Fiction, so that people
who are able to enjoy SF can experience those myths the way
the original creators of those stories *meant* them to be
experienced.
This is a level of translation that's an awful lot more
valuable, and a lot harder, than casting it into modern
English. But with Drake's classical and historical training,
this is the story he was born to write. (Well, this and
"Ranks of Bronze.")
These stories contain the best Odin, and best Thor, the
best Loki -- and all the rest of the crowd -- that have
been written in seven hundred years. Once long ago I
enjoyed comic books with the blond guy with the big hammer
who talked funny. Drake has given me a Thor that I can
understand, enjoy, and re-read three times -- as an adult.
They don't have form-fitting green costumes. They do have
armor, and guns, and attitudes. These are the real ones.
Some people aren't going to get it. OK. But if you happen
to be a person who *can* get it -- YOU NEED THESE BOOKS.
If I lost mine, I would go without food for three days to
get them back.
I'm writing this because I didn't pay enough for these books
compared to what I got out of them. And because, in a few
hours, I'm going to finish my current re-reading, which means
I won't be able to go back to Northworld for several years.
If you haven't read them yet, and if you're a person to whom
these myths will speak, you're lucky.
Try to get an edition that will last a very long time.
One of my favorites. One I had to own and re-read........2005-03-09
This review is for the whole trilogy and not just the first book.
David Drake's best stories create characters and environments (such as soldiers in a theater of combat) which seem straightforward but are actually quite alien to those of us who live in modern, civilian settings.
Northworld transports a character from a futuristic civilization into a barbaric, violent world, where life is short and (for the majority) unpleasent.
A lot of authors spend page after page describing rustic sunsets and muddy roads and leave me feeling like they're imagining everything happening in a 'holodeck' with low-tech scenery but modern behavior and motives.
David Drake tells this story through his characters' actions rather then through extensive description or tortured internal monologues, and Northworld takes us with the main character to an alien world based loosely on Drake's intepretation of Norse Eddas.
I love it, and keep my copy around for re-reading, but it is a story that I have to be in the mood for due to its grim environment.
A Guilty Pleasure.......2004-05-05
Northworld was a fun read. The characters were simple, direct, and easy to understand. Drake's short discussions of how he lifted the plotlines from Norse mythology added a lot of interest.
myah..........2004-01-16
So so. By Drake's standards, not his best work. Certainly, the scope and complexity of what he was attempting was larger than anything else he has done. Having said that, I couldn't help but notice that after the third or fourth battle in the Open Lands, everything seemed repeated. And repeated. And repeated. The sex scenes seem rather superfluous, as well.
This isn't a bad book, but it shouldn't be ranked as high as some of the classics of the genre.
Northworld? Bleh........2003-05-14
This book (Northworld) was unoriginal and rather boring. The characters were less than one-dimensional and quite frankly there was little to interest me. There was plenty of opportunity here for the author to more thoroughly develop his universe (social structure and characters). Instead he decided to focus on poor descriptions of combat sequences and the occasional deus ex machina to drag the story along. The book featured a main character about whom we couldn't care less, and one surrounded by blithering idiots to boot. Apparently in the author's mind, women exist simply to satisfy the sexual urges of male characters.
Now, I understand that this was all based on Norse mythology, but there's no reason to preserve the same intellectual level.
Fortunately I read this book without having to spend any money to do so (thanks Baen Free Library!).

A presentation of the Gospel as illuminated through the Jungian personality types.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding explanation personality types in spiritual terms.......1999-09-23
This book presents an outstanding understanding of the personality types including psychosocial development. It correlates Jungian personality types (and Meyers-Briggs Type Indicators) to a spiritual and biblical context to help us in our journey toward wholeness. This is an excellent resource for personal growth as well as retreat material. I am a psychotherapist and a spiritual director. I have used it for many years with my directees to help them better understand themselves in relationship to God, scripture, and their spiritual growth.

Book Description
Bob Sharon Huxford The authors of our popular Roseville Pottery and McCoy Pottery books are back with a new edition of their bestselling guide to Fiesta ware. This book showcases over 1,000 colorful pieces of Fiesta and features the colors and shapes of the 'post-86' line as well. There are more than 50 new photos, including some rare, never-before-seen pieces. The popular Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Kraft lines are also featured. Kenilworth, a line which has not been included in previous editions, and striped Fiesta are both well documented this time, and the Art China section has been expanded and will include many wonderful new photos of this early line. The authors have also included experimental items from the Homer Laughlin morgue, as well as the historical information so many collectors crave. Finally, current values are addressed and changes have been made to better reflect today's market on both the vintage and post-86 lines.
Customer Reviews:
I am a newbie to Fiesta.......2007-09-27
I am brand new at collecting Fiesta Ware. I really enjoyed this book. Great pics. It has been a wealth of info for someone new like me.
FIESTA.......2006-07-27
This is the third book in this series I have purchased by these authors. I like the book a lot.
A jumbled up mess.......2006-01-24
One of worst of the newer "collector" books out there. There isn't even a color chart with the names, you need to deduce them by flipping through all the pages and guessing at collections of variuos colors and doing a process of elimination. Fakes are mentioned, and the author says "you'll know them when you see them". Thanks alot! All the marks aren't even listed. What about newer peices versus old?
Some Encyclopedia, more like ramblings of a collector. The medium green issue is already covered by others, the book mentions it everywhere but gives very little evidence of it (maybe the author has medium green envy?).
Not worth the bargain price spent on it. Certainly not a reference book.
p.s. I give other collector books 5 stars, so I'm not just a grump.
Huxford's Fiesta 10th Edition.......2005-08-06
I just received the 10th edition copy of Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta, and other related items. The new layout and design are exactly what this edition needed to set it out above the previous ones. It seems the forward is a bit lengthy. Each page is framed in the turquoise color. The new pictures are numerous!! And for those who collect New Fiesta (produced since 1986, the pages for this are expanded to include up thru Scarlet and quite a few of the pieces produced thus far in color pictures. I rate this book at 4 stars for one reason. I feel the prices are inflated and out of line. Yes, there will always be some "rare" items at high prices. There are a fair share of pictures that are the same as previous books as well.
A Good Beginning.......2005-07-10
The title of this book "Fiesta" can be a little misleading to the novice or seasoned collector. Beyond actual Fiesta and Fiestaware by Homer Laughlin the author's detail company history by delving into Harhequin, Riviera, Mexican lines, Kitchen Kraft, even promotional items and advertising.
For Fiesta identification pieces the pictures and Plate descriptions are very good. Pictures, specifically are very clear and concise while the page quality is excellent. In particular, this book will provide a very wide range of history and the wide variety of products offered by Homer Laughlin Co. over many years. Although the title suggests a book on Fiesta, this portion is limited.
If your looking for price comparisons or rule of thumb the book is weak in this department, it does not effectively handle all colors preferring to provide information strictly on the "hot" collector pieces such as 'medium green.' Of course, prices quoted in books are strictly "guides" as the internet, antique malls and live auctions mix up values on a weekly basis. Current research and personal perspective will be the true guides for market value at any given time.
Fiesta is covered in the first 73 pages of this book (pre/post 1986) and then moves on other topics or products produced. This book would be a fine starter for the novice but additional resources will need to be added for a complete library on Fiesta and Fiestaware.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Book.......2005-01-20
I really love this book. I've used it many times to find the names of patterns I have from years of estate sales to sell on e-Bay. Great work.
Definately worth the price.......2002-04-17
A wonderful beautifully done book. This is a great book for looking up patterns. There are plenty of color photos which show great detail. I plan on buying the previous and subsequent volumns of this book.
Not Very Impressed.......2000-07-27
While the book was somewhat helpful with listing the various companies, it was very short in pattern names, examples and pricing.
An amateur attempt with good photos.......1999-12-14
Other than the photos, there isn't much here. It's very amateurish. Whole categories are missing -- there is barely a mention of "Fiesta" at all. Makes you think the publisher had an arrangement so as not to infringe on sales of their Fiesta books. There is no mention of Metlox. Also, while there is a price guide, it only lists the specific pieces that are shown in the photos, not all the pieces in the line. This is a major shortcoming. There should be some mention of pieces not shown. The book is also poorly organized, with ads from old magazines interspersed with original writing. It reminds me of an 8th grade book report. Spend your money elsewhere.
This encyclopedia has neither depth nor breadth........1999-08-19
The title of this book implies that it is an all-encompassing American dinnerware reference work. However, it is sadly lacking in both breadth and depth. Any collector would be well advised to look elsewhere. This work is so superficial that it is virtually useless.

Good Book to Have.......2001-12-28
Without a good book for reference - collectors have to scan several - well - this book has it all - patterns - prices and good photos - remember price guides in any book are subject to local and regional trend - so don't get caught up with BOOK PRICES. Buy what you like for a price you think fair. Go buy the book - can't wait for the next one.
Sour Grapes.......2001-06-07
This is one of the finest reference books in the industry today. Thoroughly researched and no stone left unturned, in fact, a remarkable manuscript by anyone's standards. I can hardly wait for his sequel to come out on Stangl Artware, Lamps and Birds. I hear its going to be a doozy!!
I strongly suspect that Mr. Harvey Duke still has a lot of his own books to sell and has sent one of his henchmen to "stir the pot". FOR SHAME!!
Another Very Disappointed Customer.......2001-02-15
The book is awful. The color pictures are awful; so much for professional photography. Poorly-written text. "I have to wonder if the author and his partner have set the prices to reflect their current inventory as they are also dealers of Stangl & Fulper potteries," said it best. Don't waste your money on this or any other Runge book that may be promoted. In it for themselves.
Collectors Encyclopedia of Stangl Dinnerware.......2000-08-07
This is just the best book ever on the subject, great photos, unbelieveable color. Very thorough history chapter, obviously written by someone who truly knows his subject and loves it. I am of the understanding that 100% of proceeds from the sale of the book provided the funds necessary for the Runges to establish the Stangl Pottery museum in Flemington. Fantastic book, fantastic people!!! When's book 2?
Collectors Encyclopedia of Stangl Dinnerware.......2000-08-07
Excellent Book, will take it faithfully to antique shows and malls. Lots of great information and the photos are outstanding. I'm glad to finally have a guide book that's helpful, informative and expertly written.

Fun book when you need ideas.......2004-10-17
I bought this book to get ideas for my own kitchen. It is filled with photos of every kind of kitchen imaginable from country kitchens to modern kitchens. I wanted to paint my boring faux oak cabinets a vivid color and this book gave me some good ideas, along with the Better Homes and Gardens website. Look in their decorating gallery for kitchen ideas.
This book had good ideas for flooring, dining sets, painting, curtains etc. It has projects in the back of the book too for achieving a certain style--cottage, vintage, southwestern. And some more window treatments ideas.

A fascinating tour of a historical period through its verbal and visual legacy.......2006-02-08
Centre for Critical and Cultural lecturer Julia Thomas presents Pictorial Victorians: The Inscription Of Values In World And Image, a succinct examination of the connection between key Victorian artworks and images, and the texts or cultural phenomena with which they are intertwined. Most of the images reproduced in Pictorial Victorians are black-and-white, though there is an inset collection of color plates. Illustrations from Victorian books and publications, narrative scenes from the walls of the Royal Academy, and more images reveal fascinating nuances of Victorian culture, lifestyle, and worldview. A fascinating tour of a historical period through its verbal and visual legacy.
