Book Description
Moths By Ouida Edited by Natalie Schroeder
First published in 1880, Moths addresses such Victorian taboos as adultery, domestic violence, and divorce in vivid and flamboyant prose. The beautiful young heroine, Vere Herbert, suffers at the hands of both her tyrannical mother and her dissipated husband, and is finally united with her beloved, a famous opera singer. Moths was Ouida's most popular work, and its melodramatic plot, glamorous European settings, and controversial treatment of marriage make it an important, as well as a highly entertaining, example of the nineteenth-century "high society" novel.
This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and a broad range of contextual documents, including contemporary reactions to Ouida's fiction and a selection of nineteenth-century writings on marriage, feminism, and the aristocracy.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A lot of the entertainment here is in the character interaction, with Black Lightning showing up, and the Huntress giving Nightwing a whole pile of crud, in a truth hurts you still want me mode.
A suitably evil bad guy in Sabbac and those pulling his strings make it reasonably entertaining, but you don't need to go out of your way to get it.
B-A-D.......2005-10-18
I hate that I wasted hard-earned money on this one. The first volume is pretty entertaining, and out of boredom alone I purchased vol. 2 out of town.
Ouchies.
This book is bad. There will be moments that you might enjoy, but overall you'll kick your own ass for buying this, and then kick again for reading it.
rough around the edges, but in a good way.......2005-06-22
I enjoyed this book even more than "Outsiders: Looking for Trouble (Vol. 1)." This is "edgier," and it's loaded with thrills and humor. It's definitely not for young kids, it's at least a PG-13 book.
Judd Winick's writing continues to surprise me. I keep thinking he's going to run out of gas, but no, he keeps the reader hooked with great storytelling. He isn't afraid to take chances with these beloved DC characters, he doesn't handle them with kid gloves like other writers have.
The Metamorpho storyline is intriguing, the return of Black Lightning has a great nostalgia factor, and the presence of Huntress is always a plus. My one complaint is that Winick's depiction of Nightwing is pretty flat, he could be a great leading character, but he just isn't. The supporting characters save the day here.
"Outsiders: Sum of all Evil (Vol. 2)" is a great read for any comic fan over the age of 13. Be sure to check out Vol. 1 first!

Customer Reviews:
Five good stories, the rest do not measure up.......2006-03-25
With a titillating title like Alien $ex, I was expecting stories a little more disturbing, perhaps something with a touch of the squishy to it, flavored with the tangy taste of repulsion. What I discovered was mostly mild, neither horrifying or $exual, and only vaguely imaginative.
Table of contents:
1) Her Furry Face by Leigh Kennedy
2) War Bride by Rick Wilber
3) How's The Night Life On Cissalda? By Harlan Ellison
4) The Jamesburg Incubus by Scott Baker
5) Man Of Steel, Woman Of Kleenex by Larry Niven
6) The First Time by K.W. Jeter
7) The Jungle Rot Kid On The Nod by Philip Jose Farmer
8) Husbands by Lisa Tuttle
9) When The Fathers Go by Bruce McAllister
10) Dancing Chickens by Edward Bryant
11) Roadside Rescue by Pat Cadigan
12) Omnisexual by Geoff Ryman
13) All My Darling Daughters by Connie Willis
14) Arousal by Richard Christian Matheson
15) Scales by Lewis Shiner
16) Saving The World At The New Moon Hotel by Roberta Lannes
17) And I Awoke And Found Me Here On The Cold Hill's Side by James Tiptree Jr.
18) Picture Planes by Michaela Roessner
19) Love And Sex Among The Invertebrates by Pat Murphy
The five good stories are 'Her Furry Face', dealing with an orangutan rather than an alien; 'Roadside Rescue', which really does display the strange $exuality of aliens; 'Scales', a story of infidelity with a Lamia; 'And I Awoke And Found Me Here On The Cold Hill's Side', a futuristic glimpse as to where mankind might head if copulation with aliens became a mainstream practice; and 'Love And Sex Among The Invertebrates', a post apocalyptic scientist tries to breathe life back into the world.
The rest of the stories all suffered from what I term "Abstracting and Distracting". Some SF tales, mostly the older pieces in the genre, tend to believe that the more abstract their prose is, the more "alien" it appears, when in reality it is simply too distracting to read. Chunky, clunky sentences strewn haphazardly across a page and using a form of "guess what I'm thinking" detachment does not make for a smooth story. I was particularly surprised at how awful Harlan Ellison's contribution to this anthology was, but even the masters must slip once in a while. Unfortunately, too many of the stories in this collection suffer this affliction, and there are too few good ones for me to recommend this book as a 'buy'. Grab it from the library, or find a used copy.
Only a couple of good stories..........2001-07-26
... the rest was fairly disappointing and not well written.
Some strong stories, some weak.......2000-02-28
As advertised, 19 tales on the theme of sex involving humans and aliens.
Sex is an important part of our lives. It is not so far fetched to believe that the same might be the case for at least some alien species. But, this area is not one that has featured widely in SF writings. Around half of the stories here are published for the first time in this collection.
This is not a collection of erotic writing, indeed it is more disturbing and sometimes funny than arousing.
Horror fiction has a much stronger tradition of covering sexual matters and some of the stories here wander along the boundary of the two genres.
Particularly "The First Time" by K.W.Jeter. This gruesome story is not an easy read but it is also one of the strongest in the collection.
"All My Darling Daughters" by Connie Willis and Leigh Kennedy's "Her Furry Face" also dwell on aspects of the human condition that you wouldn't want to discuss with your mother. Nonetheless, they are good stories that use the "alien" setting to good effect.
The collection is not confined to such serious, or even disturbing material. There are some genuinely funny stories here too. Especially the classic "How's the Nightlife on Cissalda" by Harlan Ellison and "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" by Larry Niven.
Many of the stories deal with the theme of aliens as a sexual threat to humans. From lighthearted stories such as Pat Cadigan's "Roadside Rescue" to the macabre "Dancing Chickens" by Edward Bryant.
I'd rate about three quarters of the stories in here as being above agerage or better. A couple were rather weak and the book would have been better had they been left out but, overall, this is a good collection.

Sex is pretty alien, right? This book proves it........1999-02-27
Ellen Datlow, long-time fiction editor of Omni, had quite a brainstorm when she edited this book full of alien sex stories in 1990. While 9 stories are reprinted, 10 are new to this book. All are worth reading, and a few fall into the good to very good range. None are classics, though, if the word even applies to material published since 1960. Of the reprints, the best material is Connie Willis's "All My Darling Daughters" (1985), which was too dangerous (in the Ellisonian sense) to appear in the genre magazines before being published in her first story collection, Firewatch. In it women discover that their boyfriends are keeping marsupial-like animals because the animal's reaction to sex is much like that of a woman being raped. It's a disturbing, effective story. Of the new material, I liked Richard Christian Matheson's "Arousal" a lot. It's a very brief tale of a woman who makes the mistake of wanting constant sexual arousal and gets it. A short tour de force. The remaining material, while interesting at times, does not quite come off (pun intended). Datlow's notion of horror veers towards the creepily disgusting, which doesn't bother me but doesn't appeal that much to me either. You might like that style better, and if so you should immediately turn to K. W. Jeter's "The First Time," with enough bloody disgustingness for several stories--a record of sorts, I suppose. I am not disrecommending the book, though. It's worth reading and having. Note: another writer with an alien take on sex is Lucy Taylor, whose book Unnatural Acts & Other Stories is more consistent than this one overall.

Book Description
Judaism is primarily a religion of actions rather than beliefs. When the Jewish people accepted God's covenant, they committed themselves first to obedience and practice, and then to striving to understand the message implicit in the Torah. In Understanding Judaism: The Basics of Deed and Creed, a perfect textbook for independent and classroom study, Rabbi Benjamin Blech presents a comprehensive explication of the Jewish faith. What does it meant to be a Jew? How does religion affect the ways in which Jewish people think and act? What are the basic concepts of Judaism? This volume answers these vital questions.
Customer Reviews:
Every non-Jew, as well as every Jew, should read this book........2005-09-01
It's subtitle, "The Basics of Deed and Creed" indicates one of its purposes; to compare/contrast Judaism, in a non-pejorative way, with Christianity. Judaism is more about what someone DOES rather than about what he believes; not that belief is unimportant. The sense is that belief is important mainly as an impulse to righteous behavior rather than in and of itself.
Understanding Judaism is, along with Rabbi Irving Greenberg's "The Jewish Way," and Moshe Chayim Luzatto's "The Way of God," one the best introductions to Jewish theology available for the general reader.
One of the best ways to illustrate is content is to list some of its provocative chapter titles: If You Had to Choose Only One Mitzvah, There Are No Ten Commandments, Why Were the Ten Given?, Why Did God Give Us Two Tablets?, Who Comes First, Man or God?, Why is God First on the Tablets?, Enjoy Life on this Earth, Does God Care About Non-Jews?, The Source of the Seven Universal Laws, The Thirteen Fundamentals of Belief, Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?, Can we "Prove" God's Existence?, Who is Satan?, Do We Really Have Free Will?, Does God Speak to Man?, Are We Close to the Time of the Messianic Era?
With all the existing controversy about posting the Ten Commandments in a public place, few people can even name them. Rabbi Blech not only lucidly explains their meaning and inherant structure, put points out that there are three different versions -- Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish -- and compares the versions in his chapter, "Why Did God Give Us Two Tablets?" This chapter contains the best such comprehensive discussion of the Ten Commandments that I know of.
I am confident that everyone who reads this book will thank me for recommending it.
Every Jew (observant or not) should read this.......1998-02-17
Starting from the Ten Commandements and the Thirteen Principles of Faith rabbi Blech gives a very clear and inspiring overview of Jewish "theology" and view of life. A must read for people who want to know more about Judaism. Enjoyed every moment of it.

Some absolutely fantastic choices include Spinach and Tomato Crustless Quiche, Mushroom Barley soup, and Potato Pizza (an excellent heat and eat breakfast too if any is left over).
A fantastic recipe book that should be in everyone's kitchen in today's hectic world. A highly recommended buy.
This is my favorite cookbook........2002-06-18
I love Mexican food and this book has so many recipes that satisfy my cravings for spicy food without the saturated fat of my usual recipes. I've made a number of these dishes and I'm just amazed every time at how flavorful they turn out. My favorite discovery was the Taco Soup (so easy and tasty!) and I find I have to double the recipe if I want any leftover to freeze. It seems the recipes have similar ingredients so shopping is easy and if I decide I'm not in the mood for chicken, I can usually find a pasta or pork recipe that uses the same ingredients. I also found the desserts to be high in flavor and low in calories and fat. I learned about the cookbook through a fitness segment on the news and I just can't say enough good things about this cookbook. It's the best purchase I've made in a long time!
For nutrition conscious kitchen cooks with time constraints.......2002-06-06
Meals On The Move: Rush Hour Recipes offers delightful, nutritious, and "kitchen friendly" recipes for quick to prepare recipes that will satisfy any appetite and please any palate. Enhanced with information on Nutritional Analysis and Diabetic Exchanges (drawn from the American Institute for Cancer Research); "Healthier Approach"; Food Facts; a Mix & Match Menu Planner; and a Tips and Tricks Section; Meals On The Move with its comb-style binding (allowing for the cookbook to lay flat upon the counter) is truly impressive. From Strawberry Bread; Broccoli and Cauliflower Salad; Glazed Salmon with Cantaloupe Salsa; and Stuffed Potatoes Primavera; to Asparagus with Lemon Caper Vinaigrette; Triple Corn Pudding; Mexican Layered Dip; and Banana Pie with Chocolate Glaze, Meals On The Move is an ideal cookbook choice for nutrition conscious kitchen cooks with time constraints.
Just What the Doctor Ordered.......2001-05-10
Our 39 year old daughter was ordered to stick to a high-fiber, low cholesterol diet, because of colon polyps. This book was mentioned in a newsletter put out by the American Institute of Cancer Research. Our daughter-in-law purchased the book for our daughter for Christmas. When visiting my daughter, I prepared a number of the recipes from this book. I never believed that anything so good for you could taste so fantastic. I purchased the book for myself, and our daughter-in-law said she would like to have it, too. My husband just had colon cancer surgery, so we will be enjoying even more of these wonderful recipes; and we love the fact that the dietary fiber & cholesterol amounts are given for each recipe.

Makes you realize how well crafted shoes have been for hundreds of years.
Book Description
From traditional, time-honored techniques to exciting contemporary innovations, here is the art of drawn thread embroidery thoroughly explained and beautifully illustrated with both line drawings and photographs. In addition to the basic techniques, such as ladder and zigzag hems, embroiderers will be delighted to find in-depth coverage of needleweaving, reticella, Russian drawn ground, Hedebo, and Hardanger-and a section on experimental machine work, too. The images get up-close to the exquisite, often delicate, stitching, and the diagrams clearly show the way to bring the needle through the fabric. Sketches give a sense of how the embroidery looks in a garment, and also suggest unique and surprising design ideas. Needleworkers will refer to this guide again and again, finding new inspiration every time.
Customer Reviews:
Drawn Thread Embroidery.......2007-06-26
Drawn thread embroidery has been practiced and esteemed for centuries, producing the kind of elaborate linen tablecloths, veils, and shawls passed down through generations. You might think it's too complicated, expensive, and time-consuming to do today. But, in fact, it can be done by anyone who is simply handy with a needle; instead of linen you can use many inexpensive modern fabrics; and while there are many meticulous, intricate designs and patterns, this unique book has lots of ideas for quick and easy projects that will lend beauty and drama to your home and wardrobe.
There are separate chapters on all of the well-known drawn thread varieties - needleweaving, reticella, Russian drawn ground, Hedebo, and Hardanger - and even an explanation of how drawn thread techniques can be adapted to the sewing machine.
With over 140 photgraphs and 97 line drawings, this comprehensive book brings a timeless art into the '90s with as much style as precision.

A Great Biography About a Great Actor.......2002-08-21
I first learned about this biography when I heard Simon Callow talking about Charles Laughton: I ordered a copy immediately. The book is riveting. One could sit and read it for hours. Mr. Callow read everything he could about Mr. Laughton and interviewed as many people as he could (excepting Elsa Lanchester). The result is that he knows his subject and conveys the story of Mr. Laughton's acting life in a straightforward manner, providing interesting insights into the man and his approach to the acting profession. Here and there, Mr. Callow interjects his opinion to comment on something that has happened and it usually is a welcome and illuminating addition to the text.
The only problem with this book is that we get to know Charles Laughton the actor very well but do not get as much on his personal life. I was curious about the relationship between Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester worked. We get some insight early on but most of it comes at the very end of the book in the "Coda" chapter. It is only when Simon Callow tells us about Laughton's last year, when he was ill, that we get to know something about the lovers he had and his personality outside of acting.
Unfortunately, I found the various movies and plays Mr. Laughton acted in or directed rather tedious reading after a while. There is so much information, particularly the quoting of reviews, that I became bored.
In sum, a well-written book and a good biography of Charles Laughton the actor but I would have liked a little less on his professional life and and more about the flawed personality.
Balanced and highly Entertaining.......1998-08-22
Simon Callow does a wonderful job of letting the reader get "next" to Charles Laughton without resorting to rumor, innuendo or grandstanding. I really appreciated the readability of this book as well as the sensibilies of the author. The best biographies, in my opinion, are ones that allow me to feel an understanding and closeness to it's subject and this book allowed me that and more. Bravo Mr. Callow, encore! encore!
A substantive celebrity biography by Simon Callow.......1997-08-26
The following is the beginning of a longer and more detailed review of this book at our internet theater magazine, CurtainUp (http://www.curtainup.com). . .This is that rare clelebrity biography that's truly well-written and filled with substantative information. Fascinating as Laughton was, it's as much a book about the creative process generally as it is about him.
While Callow, an actor as well as a writer, does not ignore Laughton's private life and personal background, he uses that information as a sandwich to stuff with the results of his inquiry into what Laughton was trying to do as an actor and how far he succeeded in doing it. The top crust of this sandwich, called "Origins" represents the author's attempt to show something of where Laughton and his acting came from. The bottom crust, called "Coda" is designed to help the reader understand his emotional life. This organizing principle works remarkably well. It may not satisfy those looking for a tell all gossipy read but it makes for a must read for anyone interested in the theater, especially so if that interest extends to a theatrical career--Elyse Sommer, editor-publisher, CurtainUp--http://www.curtainup.com
