Book Description
In My Mother's House and Sido, Colette plays fictional variations on the themes of childhood, family, and, above all, her mother. Vividly alive, fond of cities, music, theater, and books, Sido devoted herself to her village, Saint-Saveur; to her garden, with its inhabitants and its animals; and, especially, to her children, particularly her youngest, whom she called Minet-Chéri. Unlike Gigi and Chéri, which focus largely on sexual love and its repercussions, My Mother's House and Sido center on the compelling figure of a powerful, nurturing woman in late-nineteenth-century rural France, conveying the impact she had on her community and on her daughter -- who grew up to be a great writer.
Customer Reviews:
Should be 6 stars.......2006-07-02
This tale of the famous author Colette's childhood is a beautiful word-picture tribute to her mother, Sido, and a glimpse into 19th century childhood in Burgundy, France. A captivating, haunting, beautifully written book, this is a must-read for anyone who has read any of Colette's work, or anyone who wishes he or she could write such a touching childhood memoir.
I keep having to buy this book again and again.......2003-02-16
I first read this book back when the earth was cooling. When I wanted to reread it, I couldn't find it, so I bought another copy. I've loaned it out, never had it returned, bought it again, ditto, ditto, ditto.
I've probably bought this book 10 times over the past 20 years, and that's no doubt a record for me.
People associate Colette with Cheri and her other erotic and somewhat scandalous writing and life-style.
Sido (her mother) and My Mother's House are written in an altogether different tone: lyrical, idyllic, dreamy, funny (of course; she's a very funny writer), nostalgic.
Read these two companion books, usually sold in a single volume, to get a real taste of what it was like to spend your childhood in rural France before the turn of the last century, in an eccentric household run by an unusually permissive mother and a much older, loving but distant father.
To read these books is to be sucked into another era by a writer uniquely skilled at her craft - and most of all, it gives you a fresh appreciation for the child who became Colette.
The essence of Colette.......2001-11-20
There are many Colettes, and I cherish them all. But the one dearest to me is the Colette who wrote so lovingly and voluptuously of her early years. In "My Mother's House" and "Sido" Colette writes about her family, her childhood in the country, and the creatures - human and otherwise - which informed those years.
In her writing about these years, Colette describes the inner life of children, country life, and her parents and their odd, affectionate and often difficult relationship with each other and with their children. We have the sense of lives tied to the earth and the turn of seasons, particularly through loving descriptions of her mother, Sido.
These two memoirs are not about "not much" as one reviewer puts it, they're about the sensuality of life, about enduring bonds of love and of blood, and about the education of a writer. Perfectly gorgeous work, and highly recommended.
Lovely writing about not much.......2000-08-26
France seems to produce more than its share of wonderful stylists who don't have much to say (Georges Simenon also comes to mind). This is a lovely, cozy read, but I'd sure like to know what the other reviewer found that is especially about women or directed toward women. I find what Janet Flanner said about Colette much more to the point, something to the effect that there was hardly a tree in French literature until Colette came along. What she does--and does supremely well--is describe flowers, insects, trees, whole gardens beautifully and precisely. For this reader that's quite enough.
Delighted in provencial.......1998-09-11
Collette holds out parts of her life for us to examime the way a woman lays out photographs for visitors to browse. These unique literary snapshots offer a delicate image of a woman's memory of a part of her life, and they are at once both delightful and common in the way they speak to women of those experiences and insights that are female. Deceptive simplicity in its wonderfully written images of provincial life.

Book Description
The Wizard Lord’s duty is to keep the world in its delicate balance. He must govern lightly to protect his domain from power-hungry interlopers, such as certain wizards who previously fought to rule the world…But if the Wizard Lord himself strays from the way of the just, then it is up to the Chosen to intercede.
The Chosen ones are the Leader, the Seer, the Swordsman, the Beauty, the Thief, the Scholar, the Archer, and the Speaker. Each are magically-infused mortal individuals who, for the term of their service, have only one function--to be available to remove an errant Wizard Lord, whether by persuasion or by stronger means.
Breaker, a young man of ambition, has taken the mantle of Swordsman from its former bearer who wished to retire. Never did he realize that he would be called to duty so quickly, or that the balance of power in his world would be so precarious.
He had a duty to perform. A world to save.
So why does he still have doubts…not just about himself, but about the entire balance of power?
Customer Reviews:
Decent plot, GREAT characters!.......2007-09-04
This book is about the characters, and especially about the main character "Breaker" who starts out as a farmer lout. You may not understand this character if you prefer books where the hero is always fast, smart, and good-looking -- Breaker is not. In fact, you probably will see where the plot is going well before Breaker does, but that's not the point. The point is to follow this character.
I picked this up because it's been a while since I read any Sword-and-Sorcery, and I was in for a long flight. It certainly fit that bill, in an interesting and, to me, very pleasant way. I have the next in the series on hold at the library.
Poor.......2007-05-22
I agree with all the other negative comments. The story and writing struck me as juvenile and boring.
"Oh".......2007-05-20
Normally I wouldn't give a good effort so low a rating, and I do think this novel is a good effort. Regardless of that fact it has some staggering issues that really can't be ignored.
If you read the book you will become well aware of why I titled my review with a single word. The main character, the Swordsman (or whichever name the author refers to him as on any given page), is quite possibly the most obnoxious character I've ever looked through the eyes of. When he's not constantly reviewing the plot in his head or speculating on possibilities that go nowhere, he loves to blithely respond with the single word, "Oh." This grows more annoying as the book wears on and more noticeable every single time.
The other characters, though less annoying since they are not the main focus, have their own foibles. Any and all conversations and scenes involving the Thief, for example, are completely useless and might just as well have been subtracted from the book entirely. The ending somehow makes quite a bit of the book make sense but this should apply more to the plot than the characters' habits and conversations.
As I mentioned with the Thief's scenes, there are quite a few parts of the book that are simply worthless. My apologies to the author but filling the space in between important things with useless scenes where nothing happens doesn't improve a story. The plot does little enough to make me care in the first place but wedge in a couple of chapters where absolutely nothing happens and I am more likely to put the book down permanently.
All the same, it was a good effort and I do plan to read the next book in the cycle (in the hopes that the characters are less annoying and the story is more exciting). The writing style is very informative and the "world" made enough sense to sustain its mythology throughout. The novel is by no means terrible but I have certainly read much better books lately. If the second book is indeed good then I would recommend this only on the basis that it covers past events.
But if Erren/Swordsman/Sword/Breaker/whatever his name is keeps saying "Oh" you can guarantee I will be writing a similar review to this one in the near future.
straight forward plot, no surprises, rather dull.......2007-04-16
"Wizard Lord" has a simple fantasy plot: young man becomes a mystical defender of the relm, expecting this to be a cerimonial position. But their king (the Wizard Lord) is corrupt, and it's the young man's job (and the other defenders of the relm) to kill the Wizard Lord.
The back cover promises plot twists, but there aren't any. Watt-Evans has written some fast paced, fun novels; but this one is slow and borring: heavy on monologs, & light on action. I was quite surprised to see it published in hardback -- the average small press publication or print-on-demand fantasy is higher quality.
Ok.......2007-01-26
This book is written with a well thought out plot. It is not like many of the other books being released as of late where the book just drags on. The book is also more tasteful than most newly written books where alot sex sex and more sex is supposed to make the book great. This book is a book of coming of age, in my opinion written in an old school fashion which should be greatly appreciated.

Book Description
Little people may have only little ways to praise God, but little ways are exactly what God likes best. This inviting book encourages kids to discover that no one is too small to love God and give praise; no one is too unimportant. A child's every activity is a joyful prayer: "Sing like angels./ Dance and play./ Jump with Joy./ Shout hooray!" Both the text and the images overflow with happiness and suggest all sorts of ways to give God praise. The photos show a wide array of multicultural images, children both alone and in groups, in different situations--sharing, praying, playing. In each the ordinary is made extraordinary by the smiles on their faces. For all Christian denominations, children ages 0 to 5.

Great Message!.......2007-08-31
This one, like the others in this series, is a great way to introduce your little ones to God's love and the gift of His son, Jesus. This one focuses on ways to give God praise... has a great rhyme and really shows many different ways we can praise God. Again... darling photos.
Love these books.

Detailing the demise of the rustic.......2005-05-13
From a beautifully crafted introduction, painstakingly researched and exquisitely presented, Hanan produces her opus.
Detailing the demise of the rustic, and defending it from it's dictionary definition, she goes on to passionately explore every facet of our lifestyles and attempts to introduce the possiblity of natural fibers, crafts and textures.
Unfortunately for the coffee table peruser, this takes place mostly in text, with a few gorgeously photographed pictures illustrating her points & chapters.
The book contains 10 projects for crafting your own rustic accessories, such as patchowrk cushions, hammock, scented candles, soap and so on. Nothing earth shattering but a good touch.
Ergo, do not buy the book for the pictures, there aren't enough for that purpose, but if you are interested in reading a well researched & thought out book, go for it~

Great title, we thought it would fit our home style perfectly and give us lots of ideas. Upon arrival and perusal, I found it overweighted in text and very, very few ideas for us to use in our home. I was amazed at the paucity of photos. Dissappointing.

Book Description
Teachers who are making the transition into management need to gain expertise in specialist areas such as finance, marketing and personnel. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive and practical introduction to these areas written specifically for those working in the field of English language teaching. The book is divided into three sections which deal with three key areas: People and organisations covers staff selection and development, managing curriculum development and innovation, and organising resources and information. It emphasises the importance of communication. Marketing begins by defining marketing and describing 'the marketing mix'. It goes on to offer detailed guidance for developing and implementing a marketing plan. Finance deals with the essential aspects of finance - financial records and statements, cashflow management, management accounting and using financial information - in terms which are accessible to non-specialists. The book gives clear explanations in each area supported by examples and case studies drawn from the author's own extensive experience. Each chapter contains a set of follow-up activities which reinforce and develop the content of the chapter by relating it to practical issues. The book also contains a bibliography for further reading. Management in English Language Teaching will be a valuable book for teachers whose career development is taking them to management positions as well as for more experienced managers.

So Have your Enfields clutched tight, boys, your bayonets fixed. And keep your heads low. There's some dark stuff lurking in these pages.
Customer Reviews:
Gritty, Intriguing, and Frightening!.......2007-10-15
This good looking hardcover features some of the creepiest horror yet...that set during the time of WWII. Some supernatural, some psychological, there isn't a bum one in the bunch. Best in my humble opinion is "Blossoms in the Wind" by Rick Hautala. Great fiction and a beautiful collector's item, something both history buffs and horror buffs are going to want to snatch up!
Weird War Tales Redux.......2007-10-14
This one is great fun for genre fans, and contains very ambitious stuff from a number of standout horror authors. Somehow this collection manages to be both nostalgic, i.e. very much in the pulp tradition, and surprisingly fresh.
