Book Description
Novalis is one of the towering figures of German Romanticism. The Novices of Sais, translated from the German into French in 1925, received enthusiastic recognition by artists and poets alike and is often quoted by the surrealists. The text is a lyrical combination of Romantic emotion combined with a profound fascination with nature. In 1949, the novel was translated into English by Ralph Manheim and accompanied by 60 original drawings by Paul Klee. With an introduction by Stephen Spender.
Friedrich von Hardenberg, who wrote under the pen name
Novalis, died at the age of 29 in 1801. His Hymns to the Night is considered one of the great pillars of German Romanticism.

This is the third book in David Farland's epic fantasy Runelords series, following The Runelords and Brotherhood of the Wolf. Having sacrificed most of his Earth-based magical powers in the previous book, King Gaborn is sworn to pursue the army of unfathomable Reavers across the land of Mystarria, hoping to slay them before they can take refuge in their underground lair. A revelation from Averan, a young girl who's gained the memories of a Reaver by eating its brain, forces a change in plan, however. If the Reavers get underground, she learns, they will be rallied by the magic of the One True Master Reaver and return to fight, more deadly than ever. Averan's own budding Earth Power leads to her being chosen as apprentice by Gaborn's Earth wizard Binnesman, and her Reaver knowledge will make her an indispensable part of Gaborn's forces. In the meantime, evil forces seek to murder Gaborn's wife and prevent her from giving birth to a son who could be more powerful than his father, while Gaborn's enemy Raj Ahten--who, like Gaborn, is also losing his endowed Earth Power--pursues the Reavers through his kingdom as well.
In the end, the book stops just as things are finally starting to move, but while offering little plot development and no real surprises, this latest chapter in the Runelords saga is still likely to please Farland's dedicated fans. --Charlene Brusso

Again, coninues the feel.......2005-06-07
Farland continues the tone and feel of the first two books in this one. While it doesn't have the structure of a build up to a massive battle at the end that the first two books had, the pace remains swift and the characters continue to grow. I had but a few concerns, all pretty minor.
First, the author must have a thing against horses. Throughout this series more horses have been killed in more gruesome ways than I can remember. Sure, they're going to get killed in battle, but he makes a point to detail the slaughter of almost all of them.
It seems awfully easy for the characters to get endowments when they want them. The characters decide that they need an endowment of stamina and in the next chapter, they have it and they're riding off somewhere. It seems to me it should be a much bigger deal to get an endowment, especially when you are pretty much a nobody like some of the characters are.
The characters travel across massive distances in no time. Even on force horses, it seemed like it should have taken much longer for the characters to get around. They go back and forth across entire countries in less than a day. Of course, with all of this travelling, their horses are going to get tired and probably die in some horrible way.
Farland is starting to lose track of a few threads. The Days and Borenson's search for a historical hero are still pushed to the back. They seemed to be big points in the first book, but not much has happened with them. I hope he ties them together in the last book.
It's difficult to look cool when you're walking around with a book with a goofy looking giant on the cover. Whenever I set the book down, I set it face down so I wouldn't get questions.
Ultimately, I recommend it, especially if you've already read the first two books. You really don't have anything to lose at this point.
Keep them coming!.......2004-04-09
Much better than the previous installment of Brotherhood of the Wolf. I really enjoyed this book and I'm anxiously awaiting reading The Lair of Bones. The world building, monsters and fighting are outstanding. Keep them coming.
Great fantasy, unique, entertaining and thoughtul.......2004-03-15
When I started this series I wasn't sure if it was all it was cracked up to be. But to me it just seems to get better and better. He started with the endowment system in the first book, and while it seems like that was the focus toward the beginning, I don't think it was ever supposed to be the real issue. To merely stick to that, and the problem of Raj Ahten trying to become the Sum of all Men, would be too one dimensional. I think a lot of time was spent on that in the beginning, because it was new and innovative and the readers needed to be able to understand it and get used to it, along with all it's questions and implications. But in this and partly in the one previous, Farland does a very good job of raising the stakes with the various elements in his world. I find all the side plots very intriguing, not because they're all wonderful and amazing parts of the story in their own right, but because each of the characters off doing their thing, actually gives the impression that they are an integral part of the conflict that is going on. They each have their role to play, and their own choices to make, which may effect the course of history. Myrimma and Borenson starting their journey to Inkarra, Celinor and Erin traveling to see King Anders, and Raj Ahten fighting reavers in his homeland. The only one that really disappoints me completely is Iome. She does nothing, accomplishes nothing, and doesn't even seem to be in line to do anything of significance in the future. Just a boring damsel in distress. But with the rest, I can only wish that their parts had been drawn out a little more. They just seemed a little incomplete (yes, I know there is another book).
Gaborn is probably one of my favorite fantasy heroes. Some people have complained that he's a boring whiney wimp. Well, I'd argue that he doesn't really whine, and I personally don't find him boring. But the fact is, he kind of is a wimp. The cool thing, though, is that that is kind of the point. Farland mentions many times how people find Gaborn unimpressive. He has not glamor. He's not an amazing, fierce warrior. He's not a fearless leader. He doesn't even always do the right thing. But he tries. And that's what I find intriguing. He's always trying to do the right thing, and at every turn he has to make moral decisions that actually affect those around him and the entire plot of the book. And he actually THINKS. You don't get much meaningful thinking from Robert Jordan. I mean, when Rand 'al Thor thinks, its about how low his nearest woman's neckline is. But when Gaborn Val Orden thinks, it's about whether he should attack reavers now to satisfy a thirst for vengeance or hold off because doing something now might bring greater disaster later on. He deals with issues of faith in a higher power that he knows is real, but is often difficult to comprehend or follow. He struggles with how he must use the child Averan's ability to absorb reaver knowledge by eating their brains, even though it is putting her through extreme torment. Gaborn is actually an interesting hero, because he seems so much more human than the heroes of other stories.
Raj Ahten is also much more interesting in this book. Instead of a lethal madman, obsessed with himself, we find a guy who actually wants to save his people. He starts to realize that people expect him to be a terrible, cruel, ruthless general. He struggles at the idea of losing his humanity to become a servant of fire. A reader could almost hold out hope for the guy.
All in all, I thought this was a great book. Some parts could have used some more fleshing out, but I liked a lot of the developments. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
All in all, I think this book could have had a few of the storylines fleshed out a little more, but it's constantly entertaining, and at the same time insightful, and philosophically and ethically intriguing.
Oh, what could have been...........2003-11-02
The Runelords series started out so promising, but has quickly gone down hill. The focus of the first novel was the endowment system where a person could give his or her best endowment to someone else. It is a cool idea and should have remained the focus of the series. There are so many cool plots the author could have come up with, but instead has decided to introduce a number of distracting elements to the story that really take away from the endowment system. The distractions come from a variety of boring storylines like Gaborn role as the Earth King (he is a big wimp and quickly squanders what he has), the Reavers(these creatures do not even belong in the story, boring lets stick to the man vs. man struggles), Averan and Binnesman(unnecessary storyline just like the Reavers), this alternate world that the glories come from, the shoting stars, and a whole lot more. I really feel like David Farland had about 5 completely different ideas for novels and instead of right 5 different books he just combined all the elements into one series. The story is all over the place and really needed to be tightened up.
Wizardborn really had no chance to improve upon its predecessors after the remaining storylines left over from Brotherhood of the Wolf. After 428 pages the story has barely changed at all. Gaborn's army is still in about the same location, the Earth King storyline has essentially disappeared(no big deal), Borenson is just starting his search to find Dylan Hammer, Celinor and the Horsesister girl are taking their dear old time completing their quest, Averan is still barfing up Reaver brains, and the Days(another cool idea with the endowment system that has been squander)have done nothing. On top of all that, this Wylde that was summoned in book 1 by Binnesman has done absolutely after its first few kills in book 2. Binnesman says that the wild is suppose to fight for the Earth, not the Earth King and yet this wylde does nothing??? It doesn't need to sit on the sidelines because it is not fully trained, come on it destroys Reavers and cripples Raj Ahten and the does not fight in any of the insuing battles. Who wrote this garbage???
The only 2 characters that are remotely interesting are Myriamma and Raj Ahten. Both willing take endowments and are envolved in lots of fights. Farland's biggest assets is that he is really good at action sequence and it shows in any of the battles that these 2 characters are involved in. If Farland focused on the endowments of his other characters this series could have been incredible. In typical Farland fashion he ends up ruining even these characters towards the end of Wizardborn.
The final book in the series, Lair of Bones, is almost out and I am glad that this series is wrapping up. I want to finish the series since I have come this far, but it cannot end soon enough. Wizardborn is a lackluster effort at best. There are way too many storylines going for Lair of Bones to wrap them up. I have a feeling Farland ended the series now so he could get the movie out.
Good, but sort or odd.......2003-10-27
This book had the feel that it was off beat from the privious 2 books. I liked parts of it especally Gabon's strides to keep his army together and his interaction with the mentally disabled man that killed 9 reavers with a pick ax. I think the charecter of Baron Walt will come up agian in the fourth installment.
I find it difficult to review this book simply because so much happens in it mostly good stuff. I think the serise has reached the crossroads stage. Usually after the 3rd book a serise gets better and stays better or heads south faster than an object dropped from the Empire State Building(can you say Wheel of Time?).
This book is great for what it is i'm just holding off full judgment one way or another untill the 4th book comes ot in November.
if you haven't started this serise go ahead and do so, you will not be disappionted.

Halfway through...........2005-09-18
Halfway through the currently published volumes of X, and the story is only beginning to pick up. All the characters have now been introduced, and now the story can continue on its angsty way!
This volumes mainly deals with Kamui coming to terms with Kotori's death by retreating Within like the spineless he is until about volume......12 i think. Subaru-kun (he's -kun to me b/c Viz's translations don't put honorifics in, and even though he's -san for the most part in X, b/c of Tokyo Babylon, he'll always be -kun)has to go save him from himself. We get flashbacks to Tokyo Babylon, and lovely little mentions of how much Subaru-kun loved Sei-chan (Seishiro-san, or if you want to be really distant, Sakurazuka-san). There's also a moment that made me giggle, which it probably wasn't supposed to, but when Subaru-kun collapses from exhaustion on Kamui (I adamantly refuse to belive there's anything between those two....), Kotori's head is squished between them. hehehe.
Fun things, (aka things that made me smile for various reasons): Kakyo looking very much like Yue with short hair in Kotori's vision, and then like Yue w/o the cat eyes in real life, Subaru-kun looking so delish throughout, espeically while angsting over Sei-chan, everyone in shock about how Subaru-kun is part of the Sumeragi family, loads of feathers EVERYWHERE (now, if only they were sakura petals.....), the CCD boys showing up out of nowhere, and the cute omake chapter for Kusanagi-san. oh, and Subaru-kun cementing his position as Bishonen of Angst.
Kamui reminds me so much of Subaru-kun at that age....and it really shows in this volume. hints are made at that over and over in this volume, which makes it loads of fun to read.
HEY!!! X MEETS TOKYO BABYLON.......2003-04-19
Poor poor Kamui....Requiem is one of my favorites...This manga might not be mandatory but this book gives so much insight to the older and less known Tokyo Babylon series. The crossover character Subaru Sumeragi saves Kamui from mental isolation. This shows off Subaru's older character and gives some rare information about his past (in Tokyo Babylon). Subaru is my favorite character from Clamp so maybe thats why I love it so much but...it gives us a clue as to what for and why Subaru and Seishiro are fighting. If you have read X/1999 before you saw any Tokyo Babylon anything this is a good introduction to Tokyo Babylon and it's characters...and by knowing Tokyo Babylon you get to know more about X! This book is so beautiful (no less from clamp) as well as the drama.

Angels A to Z is one the most thorough source i've found on angels themselves. It lists nearly every important angel, fallen or otherwise, and does so in such a way as to make any information easy to find. This book enables the reader to expand their knowledge on angels to a great degree, but without being boring and mundane. It's a completely enjoyable, interesting, and altogether fun read, for those who are religous, or those who are not

Customer Reviews:
Not really worth the price..........2007-05-26
I bought this because of the rave reviews, but for the price of the book, I found it lacking. Being only 64 pages long, I was really hoping it would be jam-packed full of blackwork designs. One reviewer states that this book was very helpful because it discusses how to create your own patterns. Well, the discussion is really 1 sentence where the author says she collects patterns of Tudor gardens and knotwork to inspire her. Well, that's great, but the process isn't explained even a little.
The first half of this book is dedicated to describing blackwork, materials used, how to read charts, etc, with very big, pretty pictures taking up a lot of room. I would expect something like this in the first book, but considering this is the second book on this topic from this author, I expected this space to be utilized with the content I'm after - namely blackwork samplers. Had it been titled "Beginner's Blackwork" or something similar, I wouldn't be complaining (or have bought it).
As for the charts, they are divided into 3 sections, Flowers & plants; Figures, Birds & Animals; and Alphabets. The flowers & Plants consist of 7 samplers that I find to be the absolute best in the book. The samples are full and interesting, with a very geometric, well balance appeal. Figures, Bird's & Animals has 6 samplers and they look just plain dumb. The blackwork looks awkward, like line drawings a child makes. The figures of people look like monkeys to me.I'm not sure if this is how these figures were stitched in olden times or if the author isn't very good at drawing figures. I don't really care, it was a waste of paper.
The last section consists of 6 alphabets, 1 large on it's own sampler, and 5 smaller, single line alphabets. I find alphabets to be another waste of space since there are so many available for free and are easy to create, but just about every book insists on having at least one. The alphabets included are boring and plain. The first is large with adornments all around the letters. It has potential & could have been a nice alphabet, except that the adornments look thrust upon the letters without thought of actually using the alphabet for anything other than initials.
As for the charts themselves, they are very nicely done, large and easy to read. The stitch examples themselves are superb with excellent photos, so much so that you could almost stitch the examples right from the picture.
Overall, this is a pretty little book, with nice clear pictures and well done charts. I would even venture to say that it would make a nice beginner's book for an adventuresome soul. But if you are looking for samplers without a lot of fluff, don't waste your money. Unless it comes down in price to about $6 I think you'd be better off searching the internet for patterns.
Great Designs.......2006-03-09
I bought this because Lesley's book "Beginner's Guide to Blackwork" was so wonderful. And this book did not disappoint, either--more great designs, and a wonderful resource for anyone interested in blackwork, or Holbein, or antique needlework techniques in general.
An excellent resource.......2006-02-23
I started doing blackwork because of this author's previous blackwork book. That one left me wanting more, and I'm glad Lesley obliged! Excellent photos of completed work face a crisp grid with the pattern on it. I especially like how she discussed how to get ideas to create your own patterns (e.g., she explains how she got some ideas from the layout of formal English gardens!). I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Much of recent theory has characterized life in media-sophisticated societies in terms of a semiotic overload which, allegedly, has had only devastating effects on communication and subjectivity.
In
Architectures of Excess, Jim Collins argues that, while the rate of technological change has indeed accelerated, so has the rate of absorption. The seemingly endless array of information has generated not chaos but different structures and strategies, which harness that excess by turning it into forms of art and entertainment. Digital sampling in rap music and cyber-punk science fiction are well-known examples of techno-pop textuality, but Collins concentrates on other contemporaneous phenomena that are also envisioning new cultural landscapes by accessing that array--hyper-self-reflexivity in mall movies, best sellers, and prime-time television; the deconstructive vs. new-classical debate in architecture; the emergence of the "New Black Aesthetic;" the development of retro-modernism in interior design and the fashion industries. The analyses of these disparate, discontinous attempts to develop a meaningful sense of location, in an historical as well as a spatial sense, address a cluster of interconnected questions: How is the array of information being "domesticated?" How has appropriationism evolved from the Pop-Art of the sixties to the sampling of the nineties? How has the relationship between tradition, innovation, and evaluation been altered?
Architectures of Excess investigates how these phenomena reflect change in taste and subjectivity, considering how we must account for both, pedagogically.
