Book Description
Winner of the Paris Review Discovery Prize for best first fiction and anthologized in
The Best American Short Stories 2002, Karl Iagnemma has been recognized as a writer of rare talent. His literary terrain is the world of science, with its charged boundary between the rational mind and the restless heart.
In Iagnemma’s stories, mathematicians and theoreticians, foresters and doctors, yearn to create bonds as steadfast as the equations and principles that anchor their lives. A frustrated academic tries to diagram his troubled relationship with his girlfriend but fails to create a formula for romance. A nineteenth-century phrenologist must reexamine the connection between knowledge and passion when a young con-woman beats him at his own game. A jaded professor dreams endlessly of his two obsessions: a beautiful former colleague and the theorem that made her famous.
Inventive, wise, funny, and disquieting, Karl Iagnemma’s first collection attests to his spirited imagination and his prodigious literary gifts.
From the eBook edition.

Great Plane Read.......2007-08-15
Some of the stories in this book would probably be most appreciated by those who've been to grad school, but all of them can be appreciated by those who've ever pondered the imprecise nature of love. Iagnemma has a great dry wit and an interesting range. He uses a variety of different time periods and story telling techniques. I found it to be a great plane read.
LOST IN NUMBERS, LOST AT LOVE.......2007-07-15
I've been rereading Iagnemma's magical collection of short stories --I loved it the first time I read it. The stories are about scientists, mostly academics, and one pseudo-scientist, a nineteenth-century phrenologist ("The Phrenologist's Dream"). They try to come to grips with love, but their passion proves resistant to categorization or manipulation by numbers. The title story of this fine collection is simply stunning: a failed doctoral student at a technical institute in the cold northern reaches seeks to pin down the love of his free-thinking lover and to write down a universal formula for the complex, unpredictable maneuverings of erotic love. Iagnemma's prose is lucid and at once coldly logical and fierily passionate. His empathic love for his doomed creatures is apparent; it redeems the book from any touch of coldness. Who would have imagined a scientist, a researcher on robots, would write such human, living stories?
Powerful and haunting stories.......2007-02-02
This short story collection piqued my interest immediately - it's not every day you hear of a research scientist who writes fiction on the side. I'm an engineering student and voracious reader, so I finally bought it for myself and recieved it yesterday. I hadn't meant to read the entire collection at once, but I kept opening it up again and again.
Iagnemma reminds me of one of my favorite musicians, Sufjan Stevens. He has the same power to evoke feelings of deep-seated loneliness ("The Indian Agent"), and the same power to disturb ("Children of Hunger"). I strongly recommend reading this while playing Sufjan Stevens' album "Michigan." Many of these stories are set in that state, and the songs and stories are full of similar imagery - misunderstood men, lonely women, and desolate, snow-shrouded winters.
The only quibble I have with the collection is that his female characters are rather one-dimensional. They are almost uniformly portrayed as being incapable of sympathizing with their lovers' relentless pursuit of knowledge. They stand outside of the world of science, not in it. I didn't care for the way the tough female professor of "Kingdom, Order, Species" fell into fangirl mode when she met the academic she idolized for years. I sympathized more with the professor's daughter in the title story, who refuses to fall into the same trap her mother did, and took great satisfaction in the unexpected revenge of the neglected wife in "Children of Hunger."
I don't think any fiction writer has ever plumbed the dark depths of science the way Iagnemma has. I'm looking forward to seeing another short story collection from this fantastic writer.
A book I didn't want to end.......2007-01-04
As I am fortunate to work at a university with a great fiction collection, I *buy* almost no books, since I can check out or have the library purchase most any title I want. This book was an exception; I checked it out from the library and loved it so much that I bought a copy so that I could re-read it any time I wanted to. After I finished reading the last story, I opened the book again, hoping that I'd missed a story, that there was one last one to read, or that, somehow, a new one would magically appear when I re-opened the book. I've not had that experience with any other book I've read -- and as a librarian & an English major, I've read a LOT of books. The little nuances of thought and behavior that the author reveals in his characters is at once both powerfully and delicately done -- a very difficult thing to do well. His new book, a novel, is coming out this year
not what I hoped for.......2006-11-03
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I opened it and, there on the 1st page, is a four letter word. Skimming through revealed more explicit language and other stuff I don't want in my reading material. The stories may be good but the other stuff is not. I'm returning it unread.

Worth the money? Probably not..........2007-07-30
My son likes it, but I'm not sure I would have wasted the money to purchase this had I known just what it was...
Fun item .......2007-03-28
This is a small item, and a nice addition to the other Dragonology books. Enclosed in the Dragonology box, you find a copy of Merlins talisman with a means of slipping a necklace chain or cord through it's loop, a dragon language decoder, and some dragon dust. It also has a little dragon instruction book. I love the artwork, of all the dragonology books. If you ever wanted to carry your Dragonology books around but found they were just too big, this one will fit in your pocket nicely. Well worth the imagination and the artwork. Enjoy.
Don't waste your money.......2007-03-22
This is much smaller and cheaper than it appears in the picture! Everything comes in a 4 x 3 1/2 inch box. The "charm" is cheap plastic, the spell book is about 3 x 3 inches, and 1/8 of an inch thick. What a waste!
Good buy!.......2007-01-10
It is great, but deceiving, it is a small little box of goodies
Dragonology Kit.......2007-01-06
Not what I expected for the price, but still a cool addition to the collection.

In three separate novels -- "Battlehymn," "Force of Arms" and "Doomsday" -- collected in one volume for the first time, readers can follow the struggles and triumphs of the Robotech Defense Force, led by the brilliant but unorthodox Captain Gloval, as they fight against the alien Zentraedi, then fight alongside their former enemies for mutual assured survival!
Customer Reviews:
Stoke your memory.......2007-03-27
It blew me away to see these books are in their third printing. I'm not aware of the series being rerun anywhere, but to have the fond memories kindled in 1985 still burn twenty years later is saying something. The Robotech phenomenon is comparable to the Star Trek and Star Wars phenomenon in the 1970s, with a hard core fan base and rabid devotion.
Why?
For sweep and scope, Robotech is comparable to Orson Scott Card's "Homecoming Saga" or my favorite "Worthing Saga." It's the multigenerational aspect that enchants me: Robotech's soul-mate "War and Peace" covers fifteen years, and Appendix B indicates that "Lord of the Rings" covers six months (by shire reckoning). With Robotech, we get something more--akin to the patriot's dream that sees beyond the years.
Yes, this is for teenagers. But so is Harry Potter, the Hobbit, and the Narnia books. C. S. Lewis said, "When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up" and "Those of us who are blamed when old for reading childish books were blamed when children for reading books too old for us. No reader worth his salt trots along in obedience to a time table."
The characters are not flat, but just platonic forms, full archetypes of the type of people we meet everyday. Rick Hunter (no relation) is Everyman, Lisa Hayes is a stressed-out career woman, and compare and contrast the rise and fall of Lynn Minmei to Britney Spears.
It should be remembered that this book is a novelization of the animated series. Therefore, it is more of a reminder of what we saw, and less of a literary masterwork. This, of course, does not detract from the book: it enhances the book by properly understanding its proper use. As C. S. Lewis said, "The first qualification for judging any piece of workmanship from a corkscrew to a cathedral is to know what it is--what it was intended to do and how it was meant to be used."
A word about the discrepancies: In most novelizations they are due to the author working from an earlier version of the script. In the case of Robotech, it seems that McKinney was forced to add things to round out the prose and the plot. In many cases--such as Brooks's novelization of "Phantom Menace" and Card's adaptation of "The Abyss"--the author consults with the filmmaker to fill in the gaps. For example, the Brain-Computer Interface caps are perfect explanations how Hunter and Sterling beat the learning curve, or the lengthy opening chapters about the first contact/boarding party with the SDF help with the setting. Then there are the other things, such as the missing Zentraedi bodies, or page 28 mentioning gawky, knock-kneed teenage Lisa Hayes. But these are rather minor.
Considering how Lucas retconned the second trilogy to fit in with the first, it may be that "McKinney" may be doing the same thing. The later version would have precedence over the first.
There is one added scene that I thing is absolutely essential: the Prologue. This is absolutely essential to understanding the whole series. In fact, I would like to see this animated, since it ties-up the three series into one knot. I loved imaging the battle between the Zentraedi and the Invid. "McKinney" includes that statement that the Invid were originally a peaceful species became the most ferocious being in the galaxy, and I would have loved to see how such a cultural shift could happen.
In any event, stoke your memory, or rediscover Robotech for the first time. Both ways, you see how the series deals with the Human Experience--love and disillusionment, war and peace, technology and its consequences, and man's place in a large and dangerous universe.
this book is so awesome!!.......2007-02-21
an excellent excellent extension of the anime show robotech, it works out perfectly with the anime, adds more plot and story and answers the unanswered questions. i love jack mckinney's writing style, so smooth and fluid, a definite page turner.
and also, jack mckinney's writing style has gotten much much better from the first books he wrote. i just hope that it keeps improving as i read through the novels.
Good background.......2003-08-18
Pretty much word for word what was shown in the TV series, with just a little more background description and events to answer some old questions. Worth getting.
A primer on how to write a kiddie book.......2003-08-05
This book was written for a 12 year old, with 2-dimensional characters that are unbelievably juvenile and action scenes that are superficial and disjointed. Too say that this book's boring would be a gross understatement. SDF-1 is crewed by bickering, self-possessed teenage girls and commanded by an incompetent old fool. How earth survived the Zentraedi invasion with these fools is totally beyond me. Save yourself the trouble and just watch the anime series instead.
Tv Show in your hands!.......2003-05-11
It follows the show almost to a T! I had to watch my DVD's again just to make sure everything was correct! If you loved the show, this is alot more detailed and gives you more insight to Gloval's thoughts as well was the numberous members of the SDF-1's crew!

Encyclopedia Kundalannica!.......2006-03-27
The author has done a good job of researching and putting together what seems like an encyclopedia of Kundalini.
The books she has used for researching Kundalini are Eastern, so it may be hard for some of us Westerner's to follow. Then again, one has to remember that the Kundalini experince is different for everyone. Also it seems to be written by someone who has not experienced Kundalini awakening.
Overall a very interesting book on the subject of Kundalini that I would recommend to anyone who is interested in this subject.
The most intelligent book on Kundalini I ever read........2002-12-23
Lilian Silburn, french author born at the beginning of the 20th century, was far in advance. I read about 200 books on Kundalini and the very best would be On a Farther Shore, Prayer of Oraison and Energy of the Depth. Of course Gopi Krishna goes first when you begin. He is a bridge. But when you are inside yourself, then Lilian SIlburn is great. She elaborates on little triffles that will become important when one understands them. She is a kind of interior architect, with a precise mind and astonishing knowledges.
The Foremost Modern Exposition of Kundalini.......2000-11-24
As the popularity of hatha yoga increases by quantum leaps, (thanks to popularizers such as Madonna, of all people), interest in Tantra has kept pace. Unfortunately, faddishness can breed mediocrity, as evidenced by hatha yoga's demotion to mock-spiritual aerobics, Tantra's characterization as "the yoga of sex" and the ancient Tantric spiritual practice (NOT theory) of Kundalini equated to a self-induced acid trip. All three views are as accurate as a vote re-count in Florida.
Now, Professor Lillian Silburn brings an academic's / scientist's eye and a novelist's style to her investigation of Kundalini and the result is a masterpiece of clarity, concision and, simple, honest-to-God truth. Without a hint of nastiness, she quickly disposes of popular misconceptions and presents three of the most important views of Kundalini practice - those of the Trika and Krama traditions within Kashmir Shaivism and the Kaula tradition ("Kulamarga"), the most concise presentation of which can be found in the ancient KULARNAVATANTRA. Her achievment ranks alongside the pioneering work in Tantra of Arthur Avalon (Sir John Woodroffe).
Madame Silburn builds her presentation systematically. The book's first part includes a preliminary exposition of yoga anatomy and clearly defines and explains terms such as "chakra" (wheel), "nadi" (energy current), "trikona" (mystical triangle), along with crucial Tantric tools and concepts such as "mantra" and the importance of understanding the outward and inward expressions of vibration and the still centers between the two in which the true yogi resides. Armed with this, even the newcomer to Tantric yoga will be able to follow the mystical and metaphorical rise of the Kundalini serpent through "sushumna" (the subtle middle spiritual channel of the spine), and the means by which it sets the energy centers ("chakras") whirling and vibrating as the yogin journeys ever onwards to final release from the mundane bonds of human life.
The book's second part explains the absolute necessity of the transmission of Kundalini knowledge from Guru to Disciple. The yogin's very safety depends upon this sacred initiation. Then, the processes themselves are described in detail, although Silburn has stated honestly in the Foreward that "Nevertheless, I have left enough points unclarified so as not to incur the wrath of the ancient masters". She means it. And, to underline the point, Silburn allows great Tantric masters such as Somananda and Goraksha to do most of the explaining in well-chosen and faithfully translated excerpts from their most important works. This enviable practice reaches its apex in the book's final chapter.
The book's third and final part is entitled "The Deeper Meaning of the Esoteric Practice". This sums up pretty well the section's contents. It must be pointed out, however, that even if what preceded this section had been worthless and unreadable (which it definitely isn't), Silburn, in her final chapter presents an English translation of a small, yet powerful section, of that most supremely wide-ranging of all Tantric texts, Abhinavagupta's TANTRALOKA ("Light of the Tantras"). This towering work of sheer philosophical-mystical genius has yet to be translated into English. Silburn humbly turns to this great master, in his greatest work, to give shape, substance and meaning to her own modern masterpiece. Neither the Seeker nor the merely interested could ask for more.
For anyone wanting to avoid the blatherings that so many modern writers ignorantly attach to this most beautiful and powerful ancient concept of Kundalini, he or she need look no further than Lilian Silburn's KUNDALINI, THE ENERGY OF THE DEPTHS.

THE BEST Bread Machine Book.......2002-12-26
After I bought my first bread machine I was so thrilled with it that family and friends bought me bread machine cookbooks for presents (cookbooks are my OTHER addiction). This is without a doubt the BEST bread machine cookbook out there. Every recipe I've tried from this book is easy and mouth-watering delicous. I've never experienced a poor result and all I do is dump the ingredients in the bread maker in the order given (takes about 3 to 4 minutes) and sit back until I smell the bread a baking! Many other cookbook recipes yeild tough bread or less-than-satisfying results due to ill-researched recipes or poor taste buds, whatever. Now I know why we've all trusted Better Homes and Gardens all these years. (I also bought a BHG slow cooker cookbook that is out of this world!) The book also gives you ingredient lists for 1 AND 1 1/2 pound loaves. I usually make 2 pound loaves and the conversion is simple from the charts given. If you want to buy one good bread machine cookbook, THIS IS IT!
Fabulous book with basic recipes that are easy for beginners.......1999-02-07
I like this bread recipe book best out of all the ones I have used so far because it has easy to follow directions and the recipes don't call for unusual ingredients. It is also easy to double the recipe for a 1 lb loaf in order to make a 2 lb loaf.

Helpful and well written.......2006-01-27
This text discusses 50 (fifty) handguns during the specified time period. Writing, photography, and graphic illustration is excellent. The level of detail is extremely helpful to the beginner. Those more experienced with handguns, who have works that specifically deal with their favorites, may find it less informative, though they may still enjoy it as a general historical overview, and for the quality of the photography and graphics.
classic handguns of the 20th century.......2005-10-27
very nice book, the information for the included handguns was very informative. I was able to learn some things about a couple of S&W handguns I owned which was very interesting. The book is a good read for anyone interested in some of the more famous and popular handguns of the 20th century.
Almost Like Holding the Guns in Your Own Hands.......2005-03-05
I thought this is a wonderful book. There are terrific close-up photos of the guns from different angles which are the next best thing to actually holding them. In addition there are exploded diagrams, historical background, and stories about individuals who are particulary associated with each gun. I only wish the book was longer, more in depth, and had more examples of these classics . (The S&W K-22 .22 caliber revolver is one of my favorites that wasn't in the book, for example.) - - I hope the author comes out with additional editions covering other firearms presented in this same style and format. I would definitely buy them. - - - (Note: I'm a very picky buyer - 4 stars is an extremely high rating for me.)
a very few goods guns.......2005-02-06
Don't get your hopes up with this slim tome. It only covers 20 models of handguns and six of those are pretty much the same guns in different calibers, Colt and Smith and Wesson double action revolvers.

A MUST have.......2000-03-31
I'm an architectual student, and i must admit that this book has become invaluable to me. Its one of the best book of its type. I have several other similar books, but this one by far is the best presented and most complete. I'm not saying its flawless, some of the renderings are blurry, and some subjects should have been further explored. Yet its still my favorite and i'm sure it'll be yours. Atleast untill I find a better book.
