Book Description

Written in 1929 at the height of the Harlem Renaissance by one of its most prolific authors, Plum Bun is the story of Angela Murray, a young black girl from Philadelphia who discovers she can pass for white. After the death of her parents, Angela moves to New York to escape the racism she believes is her only obstacle to opportunity. What she soon discovers is that being a woman has its own burdens that don't fade with the color of one's skin, and that love and marriage might not offer her salvation. "This novel was Fauset's call to the community to open itself to discussion and criticism and to aggressive intellectual pursuit of knowledge and experience. That call is just as necessary today. Plum Bun is a fine example of the hidden Harlem Renaissance-where the women were writers too." -Marie Elsie St. Leger, Emerge "A fascinating glimpse of a now-vanished Harlem culture." -Rosalind Warren, New Directions for Women

4 out of 5 stars About color within color.......2004-04-25

You could see the world black and white with black and white people. But within both races there are so many different hues upon which people are judged again as well.
Plum Bun, written during the Harlem Renaissance, is about this. It's the story of Angela and her sister Virginia, who is blacker than Angela. The story follows the life of Angela and who no one really knows she is black and how she doesn't act upon it. She tries to enter a white world, also by changing her name. It gives a good insight into the complexities of color, and therefor worth reading this novel by Mr. Fauset.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-10-01

Fauset allows the reader to take an in-depth look at passing for white. Unlike the charcater in Danzy Sennas Caucasia, Fauset creates a main character who chooses to pass and lets the reader know every repercussion of that decision. Go out and get it!

5 out of 5 stars Jessie Fauset is EXCELLENT!!!.......2000-12-07

I was so impressed with how Ms Fauset wrote Plum Bun, that upon completing the book I have been actively purchasing all of her other books that are in print. Her writing style proves that a good book is timeless. I highly recommend Plum Bun and There Is Confusion, which was so good I could not put it down..literally. I strongly urge all to get this woman's books post haste!! You will have some very satisfying reading hours.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Classic!.......2000-08-12

Ms. Fauset was one of the most underrated members of the Harlem Renaissance. Plum Bun is by far the strongest of her novels. I saw more in this story than simply a discussion of color and privilege, I was pleased by the complexity of the relationship between the two sisters in this novel. Ms. Fauset is one of my literary favorites, and a woman that I truly admire. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars A good work by Ms. Fauset.......1999-12-19

I give PLUM BUN a positive review. I first noticed it at the bookstore where I work. The Harlem Renaissance is something great; I read all I can on it. This novel is quite representative of the era.

About a month before seeing this book, I read THE POWER OF PRIDE, a coffee table book on the Harlem Renaissance which contained some wonderful photos. Having read ...PRIDE, I noticed that something about this particular edition of PLUM BUN really bothers me. The portrait drawing on the front of the book looks more like Nella Larsen than it does Jessie Fauset. Unless Ms.Marks and Ms.Edkins, the compilers of ...PRIDE, got their photos mixed up, the picture on the front of PLUM BUN is Nella Larsen--not Jessie Fauset.

    5 out of 5 stars The Begining of a Legend (Not Quite).......2007-10-05

    Any of you who thought that these were the first adventures of the X-men are in for a rude awakening. The X-men were created in 1963 by the man himself (drum roll please) Stan Lee. The adventures of the original team can be found in essential Uncanny X-men vol.1, Classic X-men vol. 2 and the last volume of the X-men Marvel Masterworks series (please forgive me, I forgot the exact number of that last one). That series was canceled in 1971 (don't ask me why it didn't sell, because I love it). These are the first adventures of the new X-men (who premered in 1975):

    Cyclops: He is the leader (he was the leader of the old team too). He can fire laser like beams from his eyes.

    Wolverine: He's probably the one you've heard the most about. I like him, but he has never been on of my favorites. Most people like him because he's a lot more violent than most superheroes. His bones are covered in adamantium (an invinceable metal that only exist in the Marvel universe) and he has razor sharp claws made out of the same stuff. He has enhanced senses and a healing factor that allows him to heal any wound (that includes poison).

    Storm: The first black lady superhero. She can control the weather (trust me, it's a lot cooler than it sounds).

    Colossus: The first russian superhero (thats quite a feat for a comic written during the cold war). He can change his body into an invinceable organic metal (no, not adamantium).

    Nightcrawler: He may look like a demon, but he's actualy the most religous superhero ever (and since he's german, we can safely assume he's lutherian[just like me!]). He's very acrobatic, has a phrensile tale, can become invisible in shadows, and has limited teleportation ablities (he gets better at it as the series progresis).

    Jean Grey (formaly Marvel Girl): She was a member of the orignal team and returns to the group several issues in. She is a phsycic who can also move things with her mind.

    Last and certainly least is Thunderbird. I won't even bother to describe him because he dies on his second mission.

    The X-men as a team were all gathered by Professor Xavier (he's the most powerful phsycic there is) to protect mankind. If you don't already know, there all mutants.

    Anyway, just buy the dang book because it's just plain spectacular!!!!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

    Here is the beginning of the rise to greatness and immense popular of the team of characters known as the X-Men. Claremont masterfully reinvents a cosmopolitan team of mutants from around the globe, after the east coast wasp whitebreak incarnation we had known previously. Adding a more adult edge to their relationships it is something that worked, big-time.

    5 out of 5 stars Graphic Novel junkie.......2007-07-31

    Ok, ok, I should say comic book junkie, because that's what they were called when I first started reading them some decades ago. This whole series of Essential X-men books are a fun read unless you get bogged down in details. I never did, I just enjoyed reading them. This is a great book. Enjoy

    4 out of 5 stars The definitive essential edition of x-men volume 1.......2006-11-14

    Finally, after a very long wait of ten years, THIS reprints the contents of X-Men volume 1 issues 94-119--plus the main feature of Giant-Size X-Men 1--in its "most essential" form: in glorious black and white (the emphasis were on the script (Claremont) and the inked pencil art (Cockrum and Byrne)). When the first ESSENTIAL X-MEN came out [circa 1996], it contained very obvious misprints:

    (1) Instead of X-MEN issue 113, the reprint came from the version excerpted from the first story of Classic X-Men 14: Witness these glaring markers:

    a.) The first page single panel
    b.) the segue to Asteroid M wherein Magneto is almost swallowed by thought balloons.

    (2) Another reprint-editorial mishap is the last page of issue 119 where the epilogue featuring Proteus smothering the poor Angus MacWhirter was missing.

    This, however, is corrected in the reprint edition of ESSENTIAL volume 1 (published 2002, complete with new cover) which finally reprints the missing page. But the contents for X-MEN 113 remain the same.

    This NEW EDITION will be a good buy if you are a late completist of the pre-postClaremont X-Men stories so that u won't have to buy the much expensive UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS #1 (which contains the original x-men 113-in color, though), or MARVEL MASTERWORKS featuring the UNCANNY X-MEN (Volume 3).

    A whole bunch of X-Men nostalgia. Or, how many people in the one house can have the hots for Jean Grey.

    Not to mention Magneto - the birth of a really good villain, and the amusing villainy of Unus the Untouchable, the Vanisher, and various other clowns of that nature.

    Fun.

    Despite Black and white pages, stories are very well-written.

    I don't care about the colors, this book just is great to read.

    It is an honor for me to possess this great comic book.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost X-Cellent.......2006-09-17

    When I first started really reading comic books in the early 1980s, there was a definite distinction when it came to the X-Men. In particular, the heroes featured at the time were the "New X-Men" with such members as Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. These were different from the "Old X-Men" of Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl; only Cyclops really bridged the gap between the two. A quarter century later, with the rosters changing so much, "Old" and "New" don't have the same meaning, but back then, it did. The Essential Uncanny (or Classic) X-Men chronicles the original group.

    For those unfamiliar with the team's origins, it started off as a group of five kids in their late teens attending a private school with the single instructor, Charles Xavier. Professor X, as he was commonly called, was a mutant, gifted with strong psychic powers, especially telepathy. Recognizing that there would be other mutants out there, he founded the school to keep these other superpowered individuals on the straight and narrow and protect the world from less benevolent mutants.

    These students were Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), a telekinetic; Warren Worthington (Angel) who had wings; Hank McCoy (Beast) who had incredible agility; Bobby Drake (Iceman) with grand ice-generating powers; and Scott "Slim" Summers (Cyclops) who could shoot destructive beams out of his eyes. Led by Professor X, they would fight various supervillains. More importantly, they would try to fight anti-mutant bigotry.

    In the twenty-four issues in this first volume, the X-Men would battle a slew of villains such as the Vanisher, Unus the Untouchable, the Sentinels and Count Nefaria, but by far their greatest enemy was Magneto who was incredibly powerful but also had a contempt for humanity; he wanted to pave the way for the mutants, also known as homo superior. Either solo or with his evil brotherhood, he would be the greatest challenge to the X-Men.

    In these early issues, the characters are still not fully defined, with only Cyclops and Professor X having really distinct personalities. For the others, we only get glimmers of who they are. But overall, the stories are pretty decent, if a little Scooby-Doo-esque: if it wasn't for those blasted kids, who knows what villainy could occur. Among the early Marvel comics, this is one of the better ones, even if it is not quite five-star quality yet. If you're an X-Men fan - even a "New" X-Men fan - this is a must read.

      4 out of 5 stars Kusanagi! So huge on the cover, so lacking on the pages!.......2005-02-15

      Now, granted, I am hoping that this review is indeed for the 17th volume of X, as there's no cover photo and navigating by links of what's been freshly delivered to my residence is a bit iffy at best.

      Just joking around about that title. However, Kusanagi IS one of the more poorly developed and least prolific characters in this story. Such a pity, too, considering just how much pure potential that particular character has.

      Now for what this volume DOES have:

      Viz is getting less and less afraid of more-or-less 'proper' translations, it seems. While the hints at relationships beyond simple friendship were all but missing in the earlier volumes of X (come on. You can't tell me it was as blatant as it was in the original japanese print. I've plowed through the translations, and my mediocre *yep, I spelled it wrong* skills at turning kanji into english were more vivid than 'special' for crying out loud) they're regularly blasting across the pages now. Kamui's uber-angsting over Subaru, Fuuma's rather touching display as he handed ye auld cup-o-eyeball over to the new Sakurazukamori, etc just made the heart do flip-flops of utter happiness.

      And for you Sorata/Arashi fans: Just guess. Just take one wild guess what's happening. Alright, not in this volume, but just hold your horses, 'kay? *cackle* Yes, Sorata ends up bloodied and beaten. Yes, Sorata jokes happily as he's been doing for the entire series. However, be prepared to see Arashi attacked with the artists' pens - she's been granted *dramatic pause* the ability to cry! And just take one wondrous guess where that's leading too. Woo, escape the hospital room or else you'll drown in the steam, I tell ya!

      Yuuto's fate is quickly and certainly being plastered out for all of us to see. How many of us can see what should happen to the smiling water-master of wonder at the cables of Beast? *raises hand* No action in this volume, but more dire threatening looks on the part of ye auld chunk-o-metal. And such pretty doodles of Yuuto and Satsuki together!

      More Hinoto development. Mmmmmmm. Hated her? Loved her? Well, this volume may just turn your opinion of her topsy-turvey once and for all. Interesting developments between her good and evil selves.

      Fuuma is - Fuuma. Stylish. Annoying. Sexy yet aggrevating to the point where you want to rip that silly-looking hair off his head. But uncharacteristically touching. And oddly sedate. It'll land you on your butt if you're expecting exploder-boy to the rescue.

      More duh-duh-duuuums in X, this time revolving around Karen and Aoki and *gags herself before she blasts spoilers for the next - and as of yet, final - volume of X*

      And as for Subby-chan... we'll just leave it at the supreme Kamui-angst-fest and sniffles with eyeball in hand. *shudder* Creepy.

      Well, I'm content. And I guarantee anyone that's been following this series will be content too. Massive romance, tons of angst and heart-squeeze, stuff blowing up with spiffy spell effects and plot twists tossing themselves about like bunnies on crack - a very satisfying volume, over all.

      If only it had the star of its cover in its pages, it would've almost been complete.

      Time to sit back and wait for volume 18. That's right - as of this moment in time, only one more volume to go. *cries* Let's lynch Clamp, yes?

      5 out of 5 stars A very well written translation.......2007-10-02

      Apart from Nicholsons translation of the Mathnawi and the works of his students Iqbal (Life and works) and Arberry (who transltated the Fihi Ma Fihi as the 'Discorses of Rumi) All other so called 'translations' are pretty much worthless because 1. They are not translations at all but rather re-writes of Nicholson 2. They are just pandering to an ever growing market of supermarket spirituality. Chitticks translation however, is very different.

      For a start, Chittick is a scholar in Persian and taught in Iran for several years and had first hand knowledge of not only the Persian Mathnawi but some of the major comentaries in Persian (which may explain why a previous reviewer found many parts of the book similar to Shia text he had read)

      Chittick may be covering the same ground as Nicholson here but his translation is well put together not only applying modern English but also a knowledge of the original.

      The book may not be of much use to everyone especially if you have already the Nicholson translation but if you are seeking a book that covers the fundamentals of the teachings of Rumi then there is no better place to start than this book.

      4 out of 5 stars Eastern Clarifier, Sufism not "dead" and not "phenomena".......2007-03-02

      The reviewer below shows typical Western arrogance and ignorance. He/she obviously knows nothing about sufism and the political role it's played throughout history. It's always come in as a political tool to fight extremism as it is (slowly) doing today. I wish people who didn't know anything about a tradition that is not their own would refrain from speaking from a position of supposed knowledge. It's the problem with Western political arrogance and what causes bloodshed, both literal and metaphorical. And sufi poetry is not "romantic"; that is simply the interpretation of unrealized minds. Please learn about the things of which you speaking. Otherwise, silence is still a virtue. Om Shanti.

      2 out of 5 stars Reviving a dead phenomena.......2001-06-05

      I appreciate the author's attempt to revive a phenomena which has been dead for a few centuries now. The fact is that suffism never had a useful role in the everyday life of moslems and with all their claims of greatness they could not foresee the collapse of Islamic world, and with it of course the collapse of suffism. We appreciate "romantic" writings of sufis but it would have been more useful if they had engaged in some sort of reform movements in order to possibly prevent the fall of Islamic world. Sufis never bothered with more relevant and practical aspect of human life, they never advanced any political theory to help Islamic world rid of itself from tyrany of authoritarian rulers and indeed it seems as if they approve of such a system and political structure. At anyrate, suffism as we know it, rose to its peak, like Islamic civilization itself, and then declined and died away. Suffism today is a name without a reality, just as Islam is a name without a reality, or if it has a reality it is a confused and confusing reality. It would be interesting to see if authors like Mr. Chittic will be able to breath life into a dead phenomena by romanticizing it.

      5 out of 5 stars Rumi, a great master.......1999-06-19

      This is a good book on explaining some of the poems of the great mystic Rumi. I somewhat disagree with the authors choice of title. many great sufis refrained calling themselves sufi, after the movement became popularized and took a different color. Sufi orders sprung up like mushroom and every group claimed to follow a great mystic figure, like Rumi. one often wonders if Rumi and his like would have approved of notions like "Sufi order" which seems like "feudaliztion" of the movement. Many great mystics avoided " orderization" of their path. Their "order" was simply Islam and the path to realization was sharia itself. To many, becoming a sufi is nothing more than repeating certain names of God about a zillion times and whirling around till one gets dizzy or as one of my modern day sufi friend puts it " one becomes natural high". And that dizziness or " natural high" is interpreted as " self disclosure" of God. It doesn't take much to " unveil" God, does it?

        3 out of 5 stars Better to find a book you can flip through first.......2005-01-30

        I have recently been trying to add new books to my craft book collection, and since I enjoy doing origami and I've recently been getting into handmade books, I thought I'd expand my library of origami books to provide myself with ideas for page elements and cover decorations. I have been designing a large "first book" for the two year old son of one of my coworkers. Tammi and I have known one another for over a decade now, having met while we both worked on the ICU ward in our hospital. We now work on the recovery ward together. She and her husband were blessed with a child during their thirties, and no one could be a more enthusiastic Mom than she. An interactive book that she could read with her son seemed just the thing, and origami forms to illustrate it seemed a splendid and simple way to go about the project.

        Although I have several books in my library that include origami plants and animals they are a little on the old side (some dating to the 1960s), so I decided I'd see what new had been published. I selected three origami kits out of curiosity: Origami Made Easy by Irmagard Kneissler, Origami Jungle by Michael G. LaFosse, and The Great Origami Book and Kit, by Zülal Aytüre-Scheele.

        First let it be said that I'm all for creating innovative and attractive ways for involving more people in the fun and creativity of origami. I've done paper folding and paper crafts for almost 30 years now, and I'm still learning about the art. Kits make sense in that they provide the beginner with everything they require at a known price. One doesn't purchase a reasonable book and discover there are a dozen other things one requires that all cost a fortune. It allows the novice to pick up a kit, try a few projects and decide whether this is a hobby they would enjoy enough to go out and find new materials to try and new more sophisticated books to study.

        This said I also have to point out the caveat to this form of "boxed learning." In each situation, the packaging is designed to attract the purchaser. It tells what is included and stresses that it's all you need to do the projects, some of which are displayed on the package itself. What it doesn't do-short of opening it or having an open copy available- is let the purchaser look through the book itself to see if the illustrations appear too confusing to follow, or if the projects are useful and interesting enough to bother with. Furthermore, the choice of papers included is at the whim of the designer, rather than at the discretion of the novice artist. While none of these kits is particularly expensive, I felt that the drawbacks were not negligible. Two of the three kits were deceptively large but consisted mostly of packaging designed to attract attention.

        Of the three books, I found the Aytüre-Scheele the most useful for my specific project. It contained the most interesting flowers and the most recognizable animals. It also contained patterns for buildings. While a little less diverse, the Kneissler book had patterns for a cat and an owl that were quite charming, and designs for masks that were stunning (I could see doing these in large pieces of handmade paper or expensive craft paper to hang on a living room wall). The LaFosse jungle animals were a little disappointing, because they often required quite of bit of interpretation to see the animal in the folded product. Of all of them I was most impressed with the Butterfly in Book One and the Tortoise and the Arrow Frog in Book Two.

        On the whole, I think I'd suggest finding a book on origami and paging through it to see if the designs appeal. You might pay even more for a good book of designs than for the kit, but you'd know that the patterns were ones you would really like to try. You will also get an idea of how easy or difficult the designer's method of illustrating the folds is to understand. You can start out folding plain old xerox paper then purchase more colorful-and expensive-papers at a local craft shop when you gain more experience.

        5 out of 5 stars Best unusual projects of any origami book.......2003-01-14

        ...my daughter (8 years old) and I have many, many origami books and this is one of the best. The animals, flowers, stars etc which are featured in this title are excellent and we have found them in no other book. Like any text onh origami, you have to read from the beginning and understand the way the author writes, in order to be successful.

        1 out of 5 stars Missing Diagrams.......2001-10-19

        I opened this product and read the whole book before i started useing it. I found that when i went to use the diagrams that the author failed to make a complete step from 1 to 2 2to 3 and so on. It would be an improvement if the author said to fold here or there with diagrams showing how to actualy do this. The pictures are more helpful than the writeing itself. You can get stuck on the very first project. I would not recommend this for beginners.

                Book Description

                Stuff is a pithy, one-stop shop on personal growth and how to be happy. Isn't it such a common experience that we learn a thing as we get older, something so basic and important that it surprises us, and we wonder to ourselves, why hasn't anyone ever told me that before. That's the kind of stuff in Stuff. It's 23 chaper titles could be used as notes on how to be happy; in fact, it includes an 81 step plan of short reminders of a subject that engages all of us, happiness.

                The book was originally written as notes to a series of seminars which Papa Al gave, first to help people quit smoking, then to help more people change their lives for the better. Thus, the chapters are arranged according to a plan to get better. First, there is the problem of dealing with emotions. Next, improving physical health also improves energy and emotional levels. Finally, there is the problem of dealing with false beliefs and strategies that all of us adopt early on, to varying degrees. The chapters are really organized into a six step plan to health. So whether you want a one-step plan or a six step plan or an 81 step plan, it's all here.

                It also includes a 10-page appendix of the author's own story called Living the Dream.

                I felt happy and empowered after reading this book. It reminded me of pleasant events from my childhood and young adult years. The book offers practical advice on how to achieve one's dreams by developing and following a simple plan for a healthy happy life. The author did this with great affection, reflecting the humor of our circumstances and our human condition, allowing self-acceptance and self-love to happen. It's a quick read and because it is written from the heart in an authentic way, makes you want to read it again and again for pointers as you go through your life. It makes a great gift for your young adult children, because it says things you may have forgotten to say along the way. I'm sending it to both my daughters! Sometimes you come across a real gem that others have stepped over and never seen. Thanks to Alvin for having the courage and persistence to live his dream and inspiring others to do the same!

                5 out of 5 stars Terrific Information.......1999-12-12

                "Stuff" is a fast read, full of great information, useful today and tomorrow. I have often returned to certain, well worn pages. The author writes in a very readable manner, often from his own life experiences. Unlike so many other "self-help" books, this one is practical in a real sense! I highly recommend this unknown book to anyone interested in ridding oneself of "stuff".

                    Every movie has a soundtrack-NOW a book with it's own eleven song CD soundtrack, but with a difference-the songs you will hear are all part of the story! Nobody Told Me is a tale about the life of rebel/musician/businessman Ken Geringer, and as you follow his adventures with many famous and not-so-famous musicians, you can hear the songs you will be reading about, played by the musicians you will be reading about. There are a host of uncooperative rock Ôn roll crazies (Aerosmith, John and Yoko, Bob Marley and more) that populate the pages of this politically witty good-time wild ride.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Story of A Girl Who is Confused.......2001-10-09

                        Being raised in a secluded, dependent, and very strict environment can have many consequences. One of the consequence is not knowing where one fits in society. This is what is happening to a 16 year old girl, Alix. She is having trouble knowing where she belongs. She is a lost teen who hates herself but learns to like herself by significant events in her life.
                        I like the fact that this book is realistic. Meaning that a lot of teenagers now a days are faced with the same situation as the main character. Teenagers do not know where they belong in society or for certain reasons hate themselves. This book is a wonderful book those kids can relate to and find good insight to help them with their problem.
                        I really enjoyed reading this book very much. Hila Colman does a fantastic job in this book by putting in a lot of detail in her writing. Her writing is so simply and easy which makes it easier to understand. The book is also a fast reading novel and so interesting that will always keep the reader reading nonstop. This book is one of the best I've read. It is a wonderful book I recommend it to everyone especially those in their teenage years.

                            ¨ that shame decimates self-esteem in a child;
                            ¨ about toxic, multi-generational parenting rules and practices;
                            ¨ about the poisonous pedagogy;
                            ¨ that abuse means all kinds of abuse;
                            ¨ about the everyday pain of abuse, and the consequences of shame;
                            ¨ about abandonment, and its life-damaging impact;
                            ¨ how I innocently carried my own unfinished business from childhood into my new family;
                            ¨ about the need to recover from the shame of my own abuse.

                            A Marriage and relationship Counselor and therapist looks back at the devastation experienced by people whose lives were affected by the shame in their childhood, and the unawareness of parents of the damage caused by multi-generational family rules and parenting practices that purport to be "for your own good".
