Book Description

In Pseudofoliculitis City nothing is as it seems and everything is as it should be. Today's forecast calls for extreme confrontation, with sandwich flurries and the threat of handlebar mustaches to the west. By turns absurd and surreal, dark and challenging, Pseudo-City exposes what waits in the bathroom stall, under the manhole cover and in the corporate boardroom, all in a way that can only be described as mind-bogglingly irreal.

5 out of 5 stars superior absurd short story collection.......2007-07-18

The characters of Pseudofolliculitis City (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae: razor bumps) will infect your mind like an itchy rash.

This short story cycle shares a common setting and a common set of characters who experience some extraordinary events. Take for instance the man who wakes up one day and decides to get a job. What does he do? He shaves off his sideburns, puts leashes on them and goes down to the street to sell them as pets. It's such a success that he goes out to celebrate and blows all his money on alcohol and porn. The next morning he ends up selling off his mustache and eyebrows and then, inspired by the profit, he sneaks around during the night and nips off the facial hairs of sleeping bums and gypsies to sell at a stand he dubs "Hairware, Inc." the business does well until confronted with an angry mob of bald-faced freaks who have been robbed of their "pets" and violently demand the return of their hairware.

In the story "The Other Pedestrian" the reader glimpses a satirical take on the other other white meat as a man impersonates a rooster. "When the Law Has Spoken" follows a traveling vacuum cleaner salesman to a family's home with a surprise ending. And in "The Stick Figure" a nine foot tall stick figure crawls out of a manhole to become an accidental murderer.

The amusing absurdity continues in 29 stories that remind me of a cross between Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, Terry Pratchett and Philip K Dick. Wilson's extremely well written prose will guide the reader through this bizarre, funny, violent, subversive world while keeping its own internal logic in tact in such a way that it somehow all makes sense.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the absurd, satirical and bizarro.

5 out of 5 stars A Needed Break From Reality.......2006-12-13

I've loved Wilson beginning with the Kafka Effekt, following him at a respectable distance ever since. I won't burble over that book here, but I suggest reading it, strongly suggest. This book (Pseudo-City), this clever accumulation of interrelated stories drifting in and out of absurdity and the bizarre along humorous and deftly satirical lines, is an outpost of the kind of writing we should all aspire to read from time to time. It makes you think a bit, entertains you all along, and the pay off is well worth the effort. If you like your reading off the beaten path (and who with a modicum of intellect doesn't?), I can guide you to no better a book than this. In its pages (I would have liked it a bit longer as I had become enamored of it early on) Wilson creates an entire world for your perusal, a world just a single dimensional step, yet one quantum evolution away from ours. But, oh the evolution. So much to recognize, and so much to find new. If you choose not to read this book, you are only depriving yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Getting familiar with the unfamiliar (or infamiliar).......2006-02-09

From a dark sticky Rorschach spot on the face of a Nobody to an illuminating but all too wacko-wacky autopsy involving a mesomorph who pretends to be a corpse... This can be nothing other than the gloomy, moody, brooding and often all to weird literary mind games the young American D. Harlan Wilson likes to cook up.
If you liked his former menu's with literary gourmet stuff "The Kafka Effekt" and "Stranger on the loose", you will no doubt like this dish. It's the perfect blend of short movies making with a director going bananas, and literary wit, freshness and creativity.
Too off-beat for most common housewives perhaps, too mind bending for white boards and stiff-suits, but ultimately rewarding for everyone with a taste for the awkward and the insane.

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge Irrealism.......2005-10-02

This is a D. Harlan Wilson masterwork. I loved his first two books, The Kafka Effekt and Stranger on the Loose. Pseudo-City is even better. It's a collection of stories and flash fiction set in the same futique, irreal urban dystopia where citizens are equated with hair follicles and nothing, not even death, is as important as a well-made sandwich and a good-looking fedora hat. Schizophrenia isn't an aberration here, it's the norm. Appropriately Pseudo-City contains elements from multiple genres as it satirizes everything from commodity-culture at large to the most inconspicuous human imperfection. There's something for everybody here.

4 out of 5 stars Pseudo-City Review .......2005-09-27

D. Harlan Wilson rightly refers to himself as an "irrealist." On the other side of the coin, there's another descriptive word-nihilism-that can be used to describe a state of self-denial, the denial of reality itself. In this regard, D. Harlan Wilson can be called a "nihilist" as well, in the truest sense of the word.

For readers unfamiliar with his work, Wilson takes us confidently into a disjointed dimension that is so far flung from everyday reality, a psychotic state of mind where one is immediately swept into a vortex of puzzling disorientation and dreamlike imagery. Pseudo-City, his latest work, is a compilation of twenty-nine short stories, strung into a necklace of improbability, controlled mayhem, and blatant slapstick episodes reminiscent of The Three Stooges had they been denied their daily ration of psychotropic pacifiers. Nothing escapes his insatiable predilection in dissecting the fabric of mundane reality: widow's peaks decide to leave their owner's head to put on his clothes and go for a walk; fictional characters from movies and books go on a murderous rampage on the set of a reality TV show; a Rorschach-Interpreter is frustrated to the point of a nervous breakdown because he can't decipher an ink blotch on the face of one of his subject's; a mediocre salesman wakes up one morning to find that he has an entire kitchen growing out of his backside where his wife cooks their breakfast on a daily basis. All these figments, along with many others, reside inside the pages of Pseudo-City, a place that is lodged firmly in D. Harlan Wilson's irrealistic mind like pieces of stubborn, hair-covered shrapnel.

What one finds at the very onset of this bizarre collection is that hair is a major theme in this most recent book of his. People are not people in the conventional sense, but rather hair follicles that take on the personas of human beings. It's as if everything that has to do with the very creation of the book takes its very existence and point of origin from the proximity of D. Harlan Wilson's head, above and beyond its initial inception. One can sense his imagination steaming a brew beneath the skin of his scalp, beyond the bone of his skull, somewhere deep in the center of his brain. The irreal city is planted (figuratively speaking) atop his head, growing along the sides of his face, over his upper lip, and perhaps engulfing his chin in a cocoon of scraggly whiskers. It is a hair-covered metaphor for his irreal vision that was first telecast in his brain and subsequently transcribed to a digital form before finding print; and finally this sometimes irreverent concoction is conveyed to the reader, page after page of irreal lunacy that palpably claims an absurd and original landscape all its own.

Pseudo-City is a book for people who enjoy dreaming, whether they dream darkly lit nightmares or fractured surreal romps that they struggle to remember upon waking. It is a book for those who are acutely aware of the absurd and find a perverse consolation in its existence. As Thomas Nagel so succinctly put it: "Our absurdity warrants neither that much distress nor that much defiance. At the risk of falling into romanticism by a different route, I would argue that absurdity is one of the most human things about us: a manifestation of our most advanced and interesting characteristics."

D. Harlan Wilson brings those characteristics very much to the fore.

        4 out of 5 stars A Sequel That Rocks!!.......2005-02-03

This is up there with The Necroscope series. Now I don't miss Brian Lumley as bad as I did.

Now he has serious competition. A must read.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series.......2004-04-21

This is an excellent vampire series. Very different take on vampires. If this is your first Christopher Golden book in the Shadow Saga, I would highly suggest reading the series in order. (1) Of Saints and Shadows (2) Angel Souls and Devil Hearts (3) Of Masques and Martyrs and (4) The Gathering Dark. I enjoyed this series as much or even more than the anita blake and tanya huff series. Highly recommended.

Book #2 continues where book #1 ended. At the end of book 1, the world found out that vampires really do exist. The world is also very sympathetic to vampires because in book 1 a few evil members of the church tried to have them exterminated, and all of it was caught by a news crew. Vampires now have rights in the world. Counsels have been formed to help vampires and humans work and live together.

But things are not as "perfect" as they seem. Hannibal one of the vampire leaders is upset at the new life of the vampire. He liked the vampires of old, attacking the humans, killing them. He doesn't want to be their friend, he wants to hunt them. Hannibal secretly starts to build his own army of evil vampires. He has plans to attack when the time is right.

Also, as usual with this series, a variety of characters are involved in different things. In Book 1 you met Wild Bill Cody and the famous news reporter Allison. They are now a couple, and taking a vacation. While on vacation, they come across some demonic incidents and then the evil villain from Book #1 makes a return appearance. This book is about the fight between the evil versus good vampires; and the evil demons in hell.

Very good book and a GREAT series. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars It's good for what it is, but it isn't all that.......2000-07-30

I dig vampire novels. So when I saw the shadow saga I just had to have it. I enjoyed the second one because I thought the idea of a shadow justice system was cool. And all in all it was a good story but I think the characters were just a little too invincible. It's kind o' hard to relate to something that can't, under any circumstances, die. But like I said, it was still a cool story.

        4 out of 5 stars Pretty good....for a sequel.......2000-05-01

Its a sequel, come on folks, how good can a sequel be? Of course the first one was better, but this one answers a lot of questions and is a pretty good book. The initial shock of the vampires and their ways are gone, but saga continues, trying to keep the reader still entertained by what the vamps really are. All in all, It was a pretty good follow up.

5 out of 5 stars The book that has changed the ways of vampires forever.......2000-03-31

im am usually one who just reads magic type books(elves wizards ect.) but these books have changed my mind about vampires forever. i loved the way that Golden used real like people that had become vampires. i am a christian and i enjoyed the way that he used jesus. it was odd but i still enjoyed it :) Golden totally changed all the boundries for vampires. from sunlight to crosses, but not only did he change them but he explained how. the way that golden wrote this made you feel every thing that the characters did. and i have totally fallen in love with Peter Octavian (would be nice to see him in another book) in short i would advise everyone who has an open mind about vampires or wants to see them catch up with the times to read these books.

This is by far the best of the Quantum Leap novels that I have been able to read. I couldn't put it down. (I recieved a detention for reading it while I should have been working in class) I have always wanted to hear more about Al, as he is never really the focus of attention, and this is just the book I was waiting for. I reccomend it to any Quantum Leap fan, especially those of you who think Al should get some more recognition. The plot is involved and very well written. One of my favorite books ever!

I just recently re-read this book for the 4th time and it brought my close to tears again at the depths of Al and Sam's friendship. While it is not necessary, I would reccommend seeing the folowing epsiodes before reading the book: Starcrossed, M.I.A, The Leap Home, and Vietnam. It will bring more enjoyment to the book. Storm was able to play off these episode emotions throughout the book and she did a great job of keeping the characters true to the Ql universe throughout the entire book. If you are not a QL fan now, you will be after reading this book.

        1 out of 5 stars Racist trash.......2006-04-13

I am a folkish heathen and even I have a hard time reading this crap. David Lane, Ron McVan and the vast majority of the 14 words press are all former members of the radical racist Christian Identity movement. These people do not believe in the gods, they use them as a tool, a cloak to obfuscate their obviously hateful agenda. I have one word for "Creed of Iron" and the rest of the 14 words publications... UTGARD!

2 out of 5 stars Creed of Iron needs sources and better artwork.......2006-03-26

Do not get me wrong... The book is an interesting read and should at least help wake the millions of slumbering folk by at least making people think about something other than coffee, SUV's and work. It is even a pleasurable read, but come on... No sources???? It would be nice to know where the author got some of his claims and "facts" if not only for the purpose of chasing down further reading. With no sources the entire book is weakened and really is just the opinions of 14 words press. Therefore, it comes off as a little too much like a sermon, rather than serious philosophical thought. A further problem is the simplistic childish artwork. I felt like I was reading a childrens book at times. One would do much better to read something historical or by Thorsson.

5 out of 5 stars A Well-written Book, Giving an Excellent Introduction to Folkish-Asatru. .......2005-12-04

Creed of Iron is a well-written book, giving an excellent introduction to folkish-Asatru and offering a wealth of accumulated Gnostic teachings, spiritual focus and ancestral pride.

Ron McVan gives us insight into the Path of Wotan. We learn of the `Horned Gods', the `Wotanist Warrior', the `Rites of Sejdr', and the Runes.

Creed of Iron also introduces us to the Aryan Ethic, offering such instruction as:

        >>Act nobly and courageously
        >>Be honest, be disciplined, be productive, and loyal to friends
        >>Respect the wisdom of your elders
        >>Honor your mate, provide for your children and carry no quarrel with family to sleep-time.

... along with other well-reasoned codes for living a strong, honorable life.

There is an introduction to ancient Aryan symbols such as Thor's Hammer, the Valknot, the Trefot, Irminsul, the Celtic Cross, and the Helm of Awe.

Creed of Iron also offers an in-depth discussion of the Aryan Calendar, how it relates to the Gods and their associated festivals. We are also introduced to the Blot and Sumbel - Wotansvolk Ceremonies.

Some other reviewers of Creed of Iron have claimed that it is "racist literature", but I found nothing whatsoever in this book that in anyway disparages or condemns any other race, people, or culture. If Ron McVan holds `racist beliefs' (and maybe he does) this is not reflected in Creed of Iron.

Overall, I found Creed of Iron to be an excellent book for anyone wanting to gain insight into folkish-Asatru. It contains excellent and inspirational artwork and many aphorisms to guide one in leading an honorable life.

Highly Recommended ~ Reflecting The True Path of the Odinist!

        4 out of 5 stars Concise & Thoughtful Text.......2005-09-23

I enjoyed reading Creed of Iron because it worked wonderfully as a primer. It's not easy to simply "jump" into Heathenism, Odinism, Odalism, Wotanism,Asatru etc. This book works well as a gateway into a vast historical and esoteric world. If there's one book that covers everything in this particular "genre" I haven't come accross it yet and I'd be willing to bet no such text could possibly exist.
Many who read this text find techinal or interprative problems, and that's fine. Never-the-less this book does a good job of combining historical and mystical information into a small volume. In the end I recommend this book for all the above reasons and I subtract one star simply because it could easily contain more depth.
If you're interested in writings that are probably going to augment this book I'd STRONGLY recommend Guido Von List's seminal text "The Secret of the Runes". Any book written by Stephen E. Flowers or those written by him under "pen names" are very informative. "Might Is Right" by: Ragnar Redbeard is an extremely interesting philosophical work as well. I'd recommend ANY book written by Oswald Spengler, Francis Parker Yockey, and Julius Evola. The latter two authors have wonderful texts such as Yockey's "Imperium" and Evola's "Revolt Against the Modern World". I recommend these books simply because they provide a comprehensive philosophy for those who live in today's world; in order to appreciate and enjoy the value of Heathenism, Odinism, Wotanism, etc. Understand the WHY first, and then delve into the complex and difficult world of the esoteric and spiritual. I have not read McVan's other text yet, but I plan to because I enjoyed Creed of Iron so much.

Note: There are several reviews by some who claim to be Heathens, Odalists, Wotanists, etc., and yet they lack the desire to: A. Survive & B. Pass this spiritualism to future generations. The reviews of these people are the reviews of cowards. Their reviews almost always revolve around popular opinion. These popular opinions come from a society that may be the most decadant in human history; as well as opinions of those who are followers of the faiths of intruders who were the destroyers and persecutors of Heathen beliefs and those who practiced and believed in them.
Others simply label this book as "racist". This is a SWEEPING GENERALIZATION, and they should be ashamed at their own simple-minded nature. How dare they defame beliefs that stem so far back they predate Judeo-Christiandom! How dare they criticize my right to be able to exist, and my desire that my heritage and culture exist. Truth like water seeks its own level.

I dedicate these last words to the reviewer(s) who calls themselves "Nauseating"--quite an apt name for them as well. I have 14 words just for YOU "Nauseating": Bitter, Jealous, Simple, Extrinsic, Idealogue, Weakling, Grungy, Privation, Goy, Fool, Carbuncle, Degenerate, Scrofulous, Coward.

A clear and definitive text on the making, glazing and firing of contemporary ceramics. In addition to containing an extensive wealth of detailed instruction it celebrates the art of ceramics and the gift of the human spirit. Uniquely concerned with the miracles of the creative process and the emergence of a more connected self, it offers the beginner and experienced potter alike a bold new bridge between spiritual development and the clay experience.

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Clay.......2001-09-03

This is absolutely the best book on pottery/clay that I have read. It is clearly written, thorough and most of all inspirational. Scott Piepenburg weaves the importance of the reader's personal and spiritual self in relation to working with clay with easy to follow instructional text. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on ceramics.......2000-11-14

Very well written, complete coverage of contempory craft ceramics. It's the one book I keep going back to. Nice discussion of the emotional/spiritual side of creating in clay which most books ignore. Excellent presentation graphically & visually too.

This is an invaluable reference. I've been searching for weeks for materials related to noise control in a residential setting. I've found only one "expert" in the yellow pages and he charges hundreds for his advice. This book provides all of the information he provided and more. Although, the editing isn't great and there are typos and other errors, the content is first-rate. For once, this book was exactly what I expected.

This book reads slowly and discussions tend to be dense while trying to be thorough but it is filled with very useful terms, charts, tables, diagrams, photos (B&W), and discussions of acoustic principals that all architects, engineers, and contractors are likely to encounter one day. An excellent resource for information about built acoustics for the professional, student or teacher. We highly recommend it. For further info: audioeng@europost.org

If you love Edward Hopper and must have the complete works, you'll buy this regardless of what I say. But if you are just a fan and want to see a bio and highlights there are better compendiums out there. While these books are bound well, the paper could be better quality as could the color reproduction. The biggest drawback is that the books don't lie flat for better viewing.

Again, if you want the complete, historical Edward Hopper - I'd consider this. But for the money and for someone who just admires his more popular works, there are better, and less expensive choices.

                  4 out of 5 stars Will Power.......2004-01-19

I really enjoyed reading this book. I became aware of the relevance of Shakespeare to our present culture and how our everyday experiences could be transformed by thinking about the values that Shakespeare, very cleverly, used in his dramas. I wished Shakespeare was taught at school the way Mr. Weinberg & Mrs Rowe represent him in their book.

                  Book Description

In three dozen plays and 150 sonnets, William Shakespeare probed the human spirit with unparalleled insight. What Would Shakespeare Do? uncovers for the modern reader all the personal advice contained in the Bard's immortal words. Using the same blend of history, drama, and earthy humor that characterizes Shakespeare's work, this book explores ideas that still resonate today: sex and love, youth and aging, morals and the meaning of life. As in What Would Buddha Do?, each page features a question about a modern-day dilemma followed by a quote from Shakespeare and an illuminating commentary by the author. Whether read as a diversion for the Shakespeare buff, an imaginative self-help book, or a unique introduction to the Bard, What Would Shakespeare Do? proves true the words of Ben Jonson that Shakespeare "was not of an age but for all time."

5 out of 5 stars A warm, enjoyable, and often funny reflection on the Bard.......2000-11-21

Jess Winfield may profess that he is not an authority on Shakespeare's works, but he sure knows them better than most people. This book is a gently thoughtful and often amusing read for anyone fond of Shakespeare or indeed, of life in general. And since the author's interpretations of Shakespeare's writings (as a guide in addressing modern problems) are by his own admission subjective, there is plenty of room for spirited discussion with friends and co-workers. A light, quick, and thought-provoking read.

4 out of 5 stars One Person's Connection of Shakespeare to Today.......2000-11-19

I was attracted to this book by having enjoyed seeing Jess Winfield's hilarious play, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), in London. I knew that Winfield would offer good humor for the reader.

Many recent books about Shakespeare have turned him into an expert on management. This is the first attempt I am aware of at making Shakespeare a self-help expert.

The effect is essentially to make Shakespeare more relevant to the modern world by translating his messages into our current circumstances.

Winfield poses one question at the top of each page, for about a hundred contemporary issues. Then, he quotes Shakespeare. Each quote is a famous one, if you pay any attention at all to Shakespeare. Then, he expands on what Shakespeare meant, and provides Winfield's own contemporary thoughts. As Winfield says in the introduction, the book is often "What Would Jess Winfield Do? . . . as illustrated by the words of William Shakespeare."

As an example, one of the questions is "What would Shakespeare do about designer labels?" The answer is Juliet's from Romeo and Juliet, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet . . . ." He then goes on to tell a story about someone who was into buying designer clothes, and couldn't enjoy something that looked great but was a knock-off at a modest price.

The key limitation then, of this book, is Jess Winfield. As he forthrightly points out, he has "no training in pscyhology or social work." He has "never raised a child, and . . . has plenty of personal quirks and character flaws." "I'm not even a Shakespeare scholar."

Although he doesn't say so, it looks like the way the book was written was to start with the quotes from Shakespeare. Then, he probably developed a humorous, contemporary question to fit the quote. At that point, he filled in around the edges with personal anecdotes.

If you read this book as a humorous connection between Shakespeare and today's world, then you will like this book. If you take it literally, you may not like it at all. Most of the questions and answers will simply not make a lot of sense to you.

I've evaluated the book against Winfield's stated purpose, to "draw out of ourselves the qualities [Shakespeare] champions: practicality, compassion, humility, generosity, honesty and tolerance." By having considered Shakespeare, Winfield feels like he has "caught a glimpse of the man behind the quill pen . . . ." and wants to share that glimpse with us.

I graded the book down one star because I found that the book could have used more Shakespeare and less Winfield. I also think the book needed either different questions or fewer questions. A lot of them are either very trivial or repetitive (like the series about eating meat).

Young people often don't read much Shakespeare now. Shakespeare has retreated from the English department curricula in many schools. Don't tell anyone, but he is a dead white European male.

For those with a sense of humor, this book is probably a good way to help inject a little Shakespeare into the unread, unconsidered life of a young person. That's quite a worthwhile thing to do. I applaud Mr. Winfield for both conceiving and taking on the task. If you know such a person, this could be a worthy gift.

After you have finished working with the Bard here, I suggest that you actually read some of Shakespeare's plays. All's Well That Ends Well could be a theme for considering the Presidential post-election recount.

Look for the timeless truths, "O Brave New World."

                  Book Description

Garry O'Connor's biography creates a vivd impression of Shakespeare's family life, his marriage and sexuality, the intimate details of his background, and his relationships with the theatre, his audiences and the towering political figures of his time such as Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Essex. It captures the darkness and confusion of his religious feelings, and his painful search for identity as well as his continuous commitments to change and development. O'Connor imaginatively and persuasively reconstructs the playwright's life and career.

The late Myron Matlaw was one of the foremost historians of the American stage, with a particular predilection for those amazing, phenomenal successes which criss-crossed the country in touring productions, bringing crowds back season after season with the devotion of theatergoers who imagine that a visit to New YOrk is incomplete without Cats. The plays in this volume include many such smash hits of the 19th century: Anna Cora MOwatt's FASHION (1845), a satirical condemnation of American nouveaux riches eagerly aping continental savoir-fair; Dion Boucicoult's THE OCTOROON (1859), the tale of a forbidden love between a beautiful octoroon slave and the white man who adores her but cannot marry her; Joseph Jefferson's RIP VAN WINKLE (1865), a re-telling of the Washington Irving story which Irving would hardly have recognized, but a glorious vehicle for a character actor; the play made Jefferson famous and kept him rich, as his audiences returned year after year to see him slyly rationalize each drink he takes after he has sworn it off forever. "I won't count this one," he explains each time, unable to resist the familiar pleasure. This book is a treasure house of pleasures which were once as familiar to their audiences as Andrew Lloyd Webber is to us today.

                  4 out of 5 stars A good approach.......2000-08-05

When I first found this book, I visited Amazon to look for reviews and recommendations. Finding none, I thought that I would offer my thoughts. I like O'Connor's approach. He does not wade through conflicting scholarly theories or get bogged down analyzing obscure English public records searching from traces of Shakespeare. He makes use of what we know from the spare records of Shakespeare's life; and he extrapolates from his own insights into the plays and his knowledge of the plays in their historical context. O'Connor also makes use of a varied and extensive bibliography.

O'Connor puts the plays and the life of Shakespeare in the context of their time, and Shakespeare emerges as an astute, talented, subtle, and versatile man in a vibrant and turbulent time. We see Shakespeare as a contemporary Elizabethan who had his finger on the pulse of society but who was smart enough to keep his fingers out of the pie. O'Connor shows how Shakespeare also used theater as an outlet to express personal struggles and discord. O'Connor's use of excerpts from the plays and sonnets illustrates this excellently.

One of the drawbacks of the book is that O'Connor's tone is of an insider not only of the theatrical world but also of Shakespeare's world. I got the sense that I am supposed to understand all of the obscure references and the oblique tongue-in-cheek quips. On a few occasions in the book when I got the reference, I could not tell if O'Connor was making a mistake or making a joke. He refers to a novelized interpretation of Shakespeare's love life by Anthony Burgess as "Brighter than the Sun," but the actual title is "Nothing Like the Sun." It was difficult to tell if O'Connor was in error or if he was poking fun at the brilliant, stylized, and occasionally pedantic writing of Burgess. O'Connor also suggests that in "King Lear," it was not Lear who confused his Fool with Cordelia at the end of the play ("And my poor fool is hanged"), but rather that the tired playwright mixed-up the two characters because they were played by the same actor.

Another drawback is the general style of writing. O'Connor's sentences are often very long and complex. I found myself rereading sentences more than twice in order to get his point. This drawback is minor and has much to do with the British style of punctuation, but it is also obvious.

O'Connor presents assumptions about Shakespeare's family relationships that I can accept, in particular the relationships with his mother, father, wife, and son. These assumptions are based on the scant historical records, commentary by writers and actors, and excerpts from the plays and sonnets. O'Connor also writes that despite the opinion that Shakespeare did not reveal his personal beliefs in his plays, we really can know Shakespeare through his writings. There are speeches and characters that exactly fit their places in the plays, and yet somehow they also transcend the context of the play and speak to us. Through these passages we know the personal musings of Shakespeare. Perhaps that is the most important thing of all, and that is a notion that definitely can be taken from O'Connor's book.
