Book Description
One of the most beloved writers of all time, Rosamunde Pilcher is the author of such internationally acclaimed bestsellers as The Shell Seekers and September.
The Empty House is about being in love with the wrong man;
The Day of the Storm is about discovering family—and its secrets; and
Under Gemini is about deception. A wonderful new omnibus edition of three full-length novels by one of America's favorites.
Customer Reviews:
Lavishly romantic, 3 from the 1970s.......2003-01-18
Three absolutely delicious tales from Rosemunde Pilcher, re-released but all with copyright dates in the 1970s. For the most part, the stories have aged well - though this is a different millenia, a different century, and certainly different times.
Under Gemini -- Improbability, coincidence and pure fate take center stage as identical twins separated at birth come upon their mirror image quite accidentally while in a London restaurant. After a night spent puzzling through the bizarre circumstances of their lives, jet-setting sister Rose takes off to Greece -- leaving her much more down-to-earth twin Flora to deal with a recently dumped fiancé. Somehow Flora is convinced to accompany the fiancé to Scotland to comfort a grandmother who is supposedly dying. The drama mounts, as does the dishonesty, and Flora finds herself living a life she never imagined. When the house of cards begins to collapse, will the friendships survive the betrayal? And, has the right sister fallen for the wrong man? A bit of a relic, but cozy as a cup of tea on a cold and windy Scottish coast.
The Empty House -- An anachronism in the form of a delightfully romantic fairy tale. From the cliffs of Cornwall to a near castle in Scotland, our not-so-modern-day fairy princess finds herself (at age 27) the widow of Prince Not So Charming. Despite the fact the deceased Prince was unfaithful and domineering and only married the young girl to achieve his inheritance, it is still a little tough feeling sorry for the Poor Little Rich Girl, who has never worked a day in her life (nor will she ever have to). Finally, she is free to be herself and she ships her young children off with Nanny to her mother-in-law in London. She then returns to the Cornwall coast and the memory of a few chance encounters of her 17-year-old self with a local farmer. Rejecting the comfort and pampering of friends, she leases a modest home near Porthkerris, fires the Nanny and reclaims her children. But can she do it? And can the combine man of the cozy hearth really win the heart of the Pampered Princess? This is an early Pilcher, with very idealistic (and out of touch) plotting but the heavenly glimpses of home and heart and her beloved countryside quite save the book.
The Day of the Storm -- After a very unconventional upbringing, Rebecca Bayliss has found bliss in her dull life working in a London book shop and living in a solitary flat she is slowly furnishing. For once she is in control of her life, and quite content. But her mother's latest lover writes that her mother is dying, and Rebecca must hurry to Ibiza. There Rebecca finally learns of her family in Cornwall and the famous artist grandfather she's never known but whom she feels compelled to inform of his daughter's death. The story is full of unusual coincidences (sometimes called fate?) and makes several abrupt turns before reaching a surprise of an ending. While Pilcher lavishly paints the background of her books, a map would have really been lovely in this one.
The ultimate romantic page-turner !.......2000-05-27
If you're not familiar with Rosamunde Pilcher yet, waste no time and buy yourself a sample of her spellbinding work ! It has it all : the warmth, the cosiness, the romance, and even the suspense. In "Under Gemini", meet sensible Flora, who discovers she has a twin sister she had never known about, the glamorous Rose, and suddenly finds herself in a whirlwind of deceipt, drama, confusion, and... love. And you will be mesmerised by "The Empty House" and "The Day of the Storm", two compelling stories about love and the pursuit of happiness. PS : The good news is : Rosamunde Pilcher has published lots of other novels and short stories : you have hours of cosy cocooning ahead of you !
Book Description
He is a man of many names. Some call him the Golden One; others, the Lord of the Silver Bow. To the Dardanians, he is Prince Aeneas. But to his friends, he is Helikaon. Strong, fast, quick of mind, he is a bold warrior, hated by his enemies, feared even by his Trojan allies. For there is a darkness at the heart of the Golden One, a savagery that, once awakened, can be appeased only with blood.
Argurios the Mykene is a peerless fighter, a man of unbending principles and unbreakable will. Like all of the Mykene warriors, he lives to conquer and to kill. Dispatched by King Agamemnon to scout the defenses of the golden city of Troy, he is Helikaon’s sworn enemy.
Andromache is a priestess of Thera betrothed against her will to Hektor, prince of Troy. Scornful of tradition, skilled in the arts of war, and passionate in the ways of her order, Andromache vows to love whom she pleases and to live as she desires.
Now fate is about to thrust these three together–and, from the sparks of passionate love and hate, ignite a fire that will engulf the world.
Readers who know the works of David Gemmell expect nothing less than excellence from this author, whose taut prose, driving plots, and full-bodied characters have won him legions of fans the world over. Now, with this first masterly volume in an epic reimagining of the Trojan War, Gemmell has written an ageless drama of brave deeds and fierce battles, of honor and treachery, of love won and lost.
From the Hardcover edition.

Death really Sucks.............................2007-09-25
This first book in the Troy trilogy was great, I gave it to everyone I could think of, and they all loved it. I have to say I can't wait to read the second book, although a part of me hates to read it knowing its the last of his writing.
I just found out he passed away last year, and I am so distraught. He was a writer extraordinaire. I have read and own everything he wrote. Including some books from England that I paid a pretty hefty price for because they weren't available here.
I will have to tell my son, who loves Gemmell, we will both mourn his loss and also mourn all the books he surely would of written had he lived on.
If you are a new fan, dive right in. Some of his earlier stuff is great also. If you have been a fan for awhile, know that we will all miss him.
You will be missed Mr. Gemmell.......
Not your average Troy.......2007-09-20
I would not describe this book as a page turner, but it was still a good read. Before you pick up this book you should be aware that this is far from the story of Troy we are used to. If you are looking for something new in the retelling of this classic story, then this is the book for you. I have yet to read the second book in the series, so we will see if some other characters get introduced, but this book was missing many main characters. Menelaus is non existent, Helen has all of a paragraph, and Paris shows up maybe 2-3 times in the story. Hector also is absent almost the entire novel. I don't want to give specifics on how this story is different from other Troy retellings, but just know it strays from the classic story. I think the story will be more enjoyable if you know that upfront and just enjoy the story that is being told by lesser known characters.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Gemmell delves into some far more overtly historical fiction here. No sorcery, magic weapons, or anything of that nature to be seen, just the odd bit of dreamed prophey by queens and priestesses.
This is more a novel of the necessities of pragmatic leadership, and pathos than heroic adventure, as he tells the story of mostly Aeneas and Andromache.
Another version of the Trojan War.......2007-06-27
The late David Gemmell's final effort, "Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow" is a wonderful retelling of the Trojan War saga, told from the beginning. The novel's primary character is Helikaon, known to the Western World as Aeneas. He is a reluctant prince and a high seas trader. His best friend is Odysseus, also a mighty king and trader. Aeneas meets and falls in love with a local priestess Andromache, who is promised to Hektor, Troy's favorite son. At the end of this first episode in the trilogy Helikaon helps defend the golden city Troy from rebellion.
There is little magic or involvement from the gods in this book, the only supernatural elements are Kassandra's visions (which are ignored) and other prophecies. The characters act more like modern men than ancient world people would have. The only one to act according to tradition is Agamemnon, a greedy tyrant. Basically all these characters act like any other character from a Gemmell novel.
Still, a wonderful book with excellent (and brutally violent) action scenes that will satisfy all fans of the genres; just wish for some more of the gods.
loved it.......2007-06-12
I thought this book was great. It had the perfect blend of fiction plus history without going overboard. I loved the detail, descriptions, everything. The characters and plot were very well developed and I felt for each characters plight..
I will definitely get the second book in this trilogy..

Written with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.......2003-11-14
This space opera is so over-the-top it hurts to read it. The protagonists and antagonists are way larger than life, yet they do some rather bone-headed things at times. The plot is so blatantly telegraphed that I the only reason I kept reading was to find out in what dazzling fashion the next event would happen. If you want good space opera, try "The Dragon Never Sleeps" by Glen Cook or "The Snow Queen" by Joan D. Vinge.
Ripping space opera with sociological SF undertones! My review, with caveats..........2002-07-19
I first discovered W. Michael Gear when I picked up a copy of "The Artifact" off a grocery store shelf in 1990. Impressed with Gear's ability to draw engaging characters against an extensive future-SF backdrop, I was delighted to stumble across "Requiem for the Conqueror" on yet another grocery store shelf in 1992.
I was a senior in highschool at that time, and devoured this book, eagerly seeking out its sequels. The character named Sinklar Fist reminded me a lot of myself at that time: not yet an adult but no longer a boy, bright, nerdy, a virgin, with no clue where he was going in life, but with plenty of energy and seeking some kind of big project into which he could channel himself. I relished Sink's exploits, felt his pain, cheered his victories, and very much enjoyed the overall drama and panache of this somewhat-over-the-top SF spectacle.
That was 14 years ago. Having re-read this book again for the first time since 1992, I couldn't give it the same stellar marks I would have given it as a teen. Certain things grated. Namely because I'm a grown man, with wife and child and a career, both civilian and military, and certain aspects of the story ring as cliché.
(NOTE: the paragraphs below contain spoilers!)
For one thing, Sinklar's meteor rise through the ranks, regardless of his intelligence, is both improbable and contrived. Nobody goes from being a Private to a General in such a short timeframe, and certainly nobody that young would be allowed to retain his battlefield commission without first passing through the bowels of various officer schools; no matter how heroic he had proven himself in war. Also, in terms of dialogue, Sinklar and his supposedly "green" buddies turn into cigar-chomping Clint Eastwood veterans way, waaaaaaay before such evolution seems warranted; even with heavy combat. Then there is the problem of Sinklar's open romance with fellow soldier Gretta Artina, right there on the battlefield, a situation which will read as ludicrous to anyone who has ever served in the real military; especially in an active infantry unit.
Finally, this book contains an overabundance of pulp-era pulchritude. Does every main female character have to have a supernaturally perfect body and face? Maybe when I was a youngster I salivated at all the overdone description of large, firm, heaving breasts pressed tightly into too-tight uniforms, sensual eyes casting alluring gazes, saucily swaying hips attached to tight, round buttocks, which in turn are attached to long, shapely legs, and so on and so forth.
But now? Now I grew tired of the soft porn. Not every woman can be a beauty queen, and even if she is, it won't come out in a military setting; to say nothing of all the romance novel antics that go along with that kind of characterization.
Having said all this, I still give the book four stars, on account of the Big Ideas which underpin the story. This isn't just about a young man gone off to war and adventure, seeking fame and fortune. It's about the human species as a whole, the age-old questions of why we continue to war against each other, how the human fallibilities of greed, ambition, cruelty, and callousness can often have terrible and unintended consequences. This book is also about the Closed System conundrum, and how a flawed humanity possessed of high technology is often its own worst enemy inside the Closed System paradigm; in spite of the meddling of the enigmatic and alien Mag Comm computer, and its Seddi minions.
Staffa kar Therma's evolution from unthinking killer to fully-sentient philanthropist is also engaging, as the man is taken through a horrible crucible of abuse and slavery, having plummeted from the apex of human power, to be returned to his former station changed beyond even his own recognition. Come face to face with the realities of death and suffering, Staffa must bear the guilt of knowing that he and his Companions are villains in the eyes of humanity, and that only an effort which might destroy him, and his mercenary corp, can possibly make up for all the blood that has been shed at their hands.
The clash of the fascistic, bloated, decaying empires of Rega and Sassa, each vying for control of Free Space, forms an entertaining backdrop for the personal character drama, and always there is the tantalizing pressence of the Others, first mentioned in the prologue, and lurking just beyond the reader's reach. Who are they? What are they? What fate will they ultimately decree for humanity within the Forbidden Borders?
You'll have to read the series to find out!
Young Adult Space Opera Fun.......2002-02-01
For once I agree with at least half the reviewers. For simply plotted well-paced space opera, this is it. If you are looking for anything more than pure escapist romp, look at Simmons or something else with a bit more sophistication. Well, honestly almost anything else would be more sophisticated. It has the funny deja-vu like feeling that all good pulp has--but this is a real doorstop of a book which frankly put me off. It's a bit of an investment in time for stuff that is really pure fluff. On the other hand, as people have pointed out, Gear can and does deliver the goods and it IS reasonably entertaining sf fun.
Weak writing, but a fun space-opera story.......1999-11-06
Gear's writing leaves something to be desired-- as in, more skill with words. This is not a book or series to read if you're seeking to become a better writer. But for sheer, old-fashioned, space-opera fun, this series gets the job done. The previous reviewer is right; you definitely have to be in the mood for this sexy/violent brainless romp. As far as that goes, though, it's pretty darned good, and fun. It's sort of "Dune" without the deep thinking.
soap opera sci-fic, but fun.......1999-02-17
Yeah this book isn't hard science fiction, but its a fun read if you're in the mood for it. A lot of the characters are pretty shallow, and its basically the equivalent of a kiddy fairy tale. But, unlike some writers of similar fiction (like for instance Piers Anthony), Gear doesn't try to pretend he is writing some deep novel, its just one rambucious, oath swearing, laser shooting, big-boobed chick, wild, story ride that is fun if you're feeling right for it. Don't expect to read another "Childhood's End", expect more kind of a mix between Beverly Hills 90210 and Bonanza.

The Book is Grand it saved my life........2001-03-30
I think there are a lot of ways t see a Truth and I want to say this book is full of truth. I was sad and very angery at the lies that are told about good people and the indian ways. I was lost and drunk and this book pened me up to the memories of my Grandmother and father. I remembered the love and the truth and I'm alive and teaching school because of the book. Please, if you need spirit and are looking to learn grab this one and keep it close-It is Great!!! Carol Smith
I love the book-It helps!.......2000-11-21
I'm a young one and I have the book it is great. My grandmother is Native American and she thinks we need to remember the magic of our people and not live in the anger and hate of the old days. We almost lost the spirit of our people and we need books like this to remember. I find the book easy to read and great to learn from. It make my Granny smile. Wolf Mooondance is a good writer. Thank you Frank from South Dakota
The Real Thing.......2000-11-18
This book is a contemporary teaching tool to reach out to all people that strive for a better life. Many would say that this isn't "traditional" material or that shamans don't write books. The idea of this book is to reach out to the public in a contemporary Native American spiritual way, and allow people to find happiness in a difficult world. This book accomplishes the goal, and succeeds in being an excellent healing tool. Doubt or anger is not what this book is about. It is about sharing a vision (contemporary) and helping people to have a guide for self healing and happiness. No, this isn't "tradional" Native American writing, but it IS great contemporary Native American writing. We are all on this earth to share our ideals and culture, so do yourself a favor and read all of Wolf Moondance's work. Native American's do write books and they also share their visions with the rest of the world. Remember anger and negative opinions do NOT mend the hoop. The book is a great beginning to help people get acquinted with spirituality whether it is Native American or a personal experience. The book is a quality experience and I recommend it highly.
sorry people. This is not the real thing!!.......2000-11-16
My purpose for writing this review is by no means motivated by any intent to slander the author in any way. In fact, after reviewing the author's website and other books, I think my review can be applied to all bookstore shamans. Unforunately, it seems that many of you non-natives are unable to distinguish authentic native spirituality from this type of material. My concern is for the interests of the reader. The approach that most Native Americans have taken in response to this type of misrepresentation of culture has not been a peaceful one. There is no shortage of protests and lawsuits against mispresentation in Indian country. There are many people today who are taking advantage of Native American people through their presentations of bogus teachings. I implore you to use common sense. You must know that today, in this modern age, there are many charlatans at work, especially in this genre. I do not mean to insult the intelligence of the readers but what you have here by "Wolf Mood Dance," is a romanticized version of Native Spirituality. In a sense, maybe this book's information is what you "want" to hear. If it adds something positive to your life, ..fine. But for those of you who are genuinely interested in learning about Native Spirituality, you must approach these presentations in a skeptical manner. Real Medicine healers are few and far between. Again, you must use common sense on this one. Authentic Native spiritual leaders usually keep to themselves and live a simple life usually among their own people and not in a corporate headquarters. It would seem very fishy to my people if our spiritual leaders were to suddenly begin to write books and create websites in order to promote an image. For those of you who seek spiritual guidance from an authentic leader, I'll leave you with a few points to contemplate. In short, you must seek the authentic healer in the proper place, and that is NOT in a bookstore. Also, each tribe has its own cosmology and heirarchy of deities and spirit helpers. It is not a case of lumping a Native practices in to one group and labeling it "Native Spirituality." As I seek to bridge the gap between non-indians and my own people. I am willing to share what I have experienced and how a genuine Native American percieves life. I do not "KNOW IT All" but I do know my culture and offer my hand for the sake of helping another in life, however I can. yellowrobe@hotmail.com

An OK Book, but by no means a field guide........2006-07-16
This book is also published by Hermes House as "The New Encyclopedia of American Trees."
This book is a nice coffee-table book, full of colorful photographs and nicely-painted tree silhouettes and leaves, but is by no means a true field guide. One minor complaint I have is that the guide relegates more common species to sidebars while somewhat less common species are given a more in-depth treatment. This might cause some persons difficulty in finding a listing for identification reasons, but as I said before it does not seem this book is meant as a field guide. Also, the index is arranged according to the Latin scientific names of trees. The Latin names are listed in alphabetical order, with the common names following in parenthesis. This is not user-friendly. For example, if one were to look up "Balsa Wood" in the index, one would have to look for the scientific name `Ochroma lagopus.'
For a true field guide, one would be better off looking at the Audubon or Peterson's guides, or even Golden's "Trees of North America - A Guide to Field Identification" which, while geared towards a somewhat younger audience, still has some value and is easy to find. This book would make a great gift for a child, and collecting and identifying leaves with them will leave them with happy memories.

During World War II, one of the strongest threads that connected every citizen to global events was their radio. With this one-hour documentary, listeners are treated to some of the most stirring speeches of the day.

Book Description
In 1972, a team of academics and archivists from the Imperial War Museum set about the momentous task of tracing ordinary men and women who lived through one of the most harrowing periods in modern history, the First World War.
Veterans from Britain, Germany, America and Australia were interviewed in detail about their day-to-day experiences on and off the front. It has since grown to be the most important archive of its kind in the world.
These audiobooks contain just a sample of these voices -- some of which have rested unheard for more than 30 years -- the forgotten voices of a generation no longer with us.
From the Compact Disc edition.

Stuck in the Greatest Idiocy Ever.......2006-09-04
These are first hand accounts of men and women that lived through the first world war. It is all there--loyalty to your fellow soldiers, cowardice, indifferent heroism, terror, and the feeling of apartheid from home and family. The most striking rememberances I took from the book were the white feather incidents--where white feathers were given to soldiers out of uniform on leave in England by young women as a goad to get to the trenches.
personal reading milestone.......2005-11-24
This is the first book I've ever read in one day; 'I rest my case'.
My most lingering memory is the story of the soldier who was shot for 'losing his way' and not showing up for a battle. When offered brandy by the narrator before meeting his maker, he said he'd 'never drunk spirits and wasn't going to start now'. Not such a coward, after all.
Fascinating wartime experiences by those who fought it.......2004-07-11
This book is full of fascinating wartime anecdotes given by the soldiers fighting it and the citizens involved in it. The staff of the UK's Imperial War Museum sifted through mountains of archives and picked out the very best to use in the book. Through the use of their own personal letters/interviews, the book follows the history of particular, mostly British, individuals during the war. It loosely follows the major battles of the Western Front and Gallipoli and even the Home Front.
Most of the letters vary in length between one paragraph and one page and are packed with the kind of realistic details that typical narrative histories of the World War I skip over. For example, in Gallipoli (p. 118) one soldier writes, "One of the biggest curses was flies. Millions and millions of flies. ... Immediately you bared any part of your body you were smothered." Short of actually being there, these kind of first person participant narratives deliver the essence of the war - harsh, demanding, brutal, comedic, and ocassionally surreal. The straightforward writing styles and unusual content make this book a true pleasure to read.
I have read over 40 books about the Great War, and this book is one of the best for personal narratives about the war. It's multi-person perspective delivers a well-balanced, insightful picture of the war at ground level (free of any hidden agenda). This book would perfectly complement a broad narrative history of World War I.
A Great Read & Excellent History.......2002-12-23
Max Arthur's new book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War. The author has utilized a number of tape recorded interviews conducted by the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Many of the tapes from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive had been forgotten and left unheard for years.
Now Max Arthur has put together many of these unheard voices from the Great War to produce this spellbinding and captivating book. I must admit that I was reluctant to buy this book as I was worried that a book full of short accounts would be too disjointed and really not detailed enough to satisfy my interest. I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading this book.
Each chapter of the book was a year of the Great War and was commenced by an introduction by the author offering a brief run down on the major events of that year. Then we heard from the men and women who participated in these events, from both sides of no-man's land. The author has concentrated mainly on the Western Front and Gallipoli and has tried to run the oral segments in chronological order.
I was really taken by these segments and I found it hard to stop reading. The accounts from these soldiers and civilians alike were at times humorous, strikingly direct, horrifying and on many occasions quite sad. I was really taken in by these accounts and I don't think that any World War One library would be complete without this title sitting on the shelf. I can honestly say that I learnt quite a few things from this book and I would place it along side such works offered by Lyn MacDonald. Well done to the author and the Imperial War Museum for allowing these veterans, many now long dead, the last word on their experiences in the Great War. This is a great book, you won't be disappointed.
