Book Description

A riveting suspense thriller about the reuniting of birth mothers with their adopted children and the madman who preys on them fter two highly praised psychological thrillers, Mark Nykanen returns with his most spellbinding story yet. Suzanne Trayle is a 'Search Angel' whose success in tracking down and reuniting birth mothers with their adopted children has earned her national fame. Known as 'The Orphan's Private Eye,' Suzanne has reunited thousands of mothers with their children, but has failed to find the son she put up for adoption thirty years ago.

2 out of 5 stars Rank.......2005-12-17

It pretends to be a compassionate book about open adoptions, and indeed in its acknowledgements at the back of the book Nykanen talks about all the interviews women gave him regarding their experiences. Imagine the horror with which these women will then pick up this novel and find their confessions so distorted. It's not about healing or closure or changing the system, it's a book filled with pornographic and violent images, scenes and chapters of women being abused and tortured in unimaginable ways, in the name of "dark thriller" writing. Who's enjoying these scenes? Who dreams them up? Suzanne is a "search angel," a private eye for orphans who specializes in reunited unfortunate women with the children they gave away long before. For years she has held on to her one secret, that she herself, the daughter of an unknown birth mother, had herself had a baby at fourteen, a son coerced out of her by a nasty priest. Now it's time to tell the world about it, and now is the time that a series of horrible murders starts littering the US landscape, commnitted by this one guy who tells his side of the story in his own words. The author has a nasty little imagination, doesn't he, but I would caution anyone who doesn't get off on sexual violence against women to avoid this particular story.

However, for what it's worth, there are some good suspenseful situations and set-ups, and the author knows how to describe a good mudslide, and a good bonfire.

But in the long run is the game worth the candle? It's not like I haven't read endless numbers of "serial killer-mastermind" novels before, and in general I think I'm sophisticated enough to separate a character's actions from the mind of the author who created him. This is the first book I can remember that, after reading it, I thought the author had slipped into some truly clinical and aberrant behavior, the first time I can ever remember in which I'd be afraid to meet a writer. It is plain as paint on a barn that he relishes the suffering of his victims. Loathsome.

5 out of 5 stars Another Spellbinder from Nykanen.......2005-10-13

Mr. Nykanen has created yet another fascinating and engaging journey into the mind of a psychotic killer. Infusing the infinitely creepy "Search Angel" with his own unmistakeable brand of humor and pop culture references, the result is another in his series of unique and compelling page turners. No, not for the faint, and strongly recommended!!

3 out of 5 stars A bit too creepy for my taste.......2005-09-11

While this book definitely was one I began and felt compelled to finish, I am not totally sure I'd recommend it. I feel the author's take on adoption for this story was very unsettling at best. It was very dark at times and I was glad to have finished it so I could move on to a different type of book. I feel that this book would deeply offend many birth mothers/adoptees and would definitely tell many friends to steer clear of it.

1 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with real life or clinical truth........2005-06-11

Mark Nykanen's "Search Angel" is a good summer read, for fans of the Harris, Cornwall genre - but his novel about an adoptee serial killer, raping and murdering birth mothers around the country - should not be confused with real life adoption issues, or clinical truth and forensic fact; as he suggests that it is.

I have examined many adopted murderers, including serial killers (as an adoption expert and forensic psychologist)- but none of them has ever killed a birth mother. Unlike Nykanen's "Searcher," who methodically stalks and mutilates birth mothers, whom he hates for abandoning their children; in real life, adoptees who kill profess nothing but love for their fantasized, idealized biologic mothers. Their rage is buried and dissociated from consciousness, until it is triggered, and acted-out, like a "crime of passion," with the victims being adoptive parents, lovers or prostitutes.

Nykanen suggests many other "facts" about the adoption experience, which are also not based on reality, and the reader is cautioned to take "Search Angel" for what it is - pure fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Outrageous Page-Turner.......2005-06-08

Brazenly original thriller. Irreverent and irreligious. Scary as hell. Exceedingly well-written, almost literary. Starkly condemns our adoption system and the Catholic Church for abusing children and turning out mass murderers.

1. The Patriarch: The Burning Chalice, by Ed Greenwood. Much more cohesion and much less cliché than in your average Greenwood story. Deals more with the history of the Uskreven, than with Thamalon's character. Nothing special, but does the job. ***
2. The Matriarch: Song of Chaos by Richard Lee Byers. A good story by Byers. Highly magical, with a detailed insight in Shamur's background, and her relation with her daughter, Thazienne. A short story written in a way it should be. ****
3. The Heir: Night School by Clayton Emery. A good description of an interesting character, Thamalon Uskreven the Second, or "Deuce". This story is all about that. Otherwise, some nice humor and a weak plot. ****
4. The Daughter: The Price by Voronica Whitney Robinson. Uninteresting and sort of forced. The story, to be honest, does describe the main character in detail, but that doesn't make her (the main character) any less annoying.**
5. The Second Son: Thirty Days by Dave Gross. A very good story by Gross. Rich, detailed writing, well conceived plot and interesting characters. ****
6. The Butler: Resurrection by Paul S. Kemp. The jewel story of the book. I won't berate much about this one. Just read it and meet Mr. Erevis Cale. *****
7. The Maid: Skin Deep by Lisa Smedman. A story that really had potential. A good plot and fairly interesting characters, marred with a great bit of naivety. ***

I must add that all of the stories deal with backgrounds and histories of their respective main characters, which is a good thing in my opinion. Don't expect grand plots and twists, but seven stories about seven more or less interesting characters. Check it out.

This was an excellent book and provides a very intriguing opening to this series of books. The book is divided up into 7 chapters, each chapter focusing on a member of the Uskerven household.

I found most, if not all, of the characters to be enthralling with all of the stories well written. There is the proud patriarch of the family, Thamalon Uskevren, the disappointed heir to the family forturn Tamlin, the free-spirited daughter Tazi, the very independent second son Talbot, the proper yet mysterious matriarch Shamur, the distinguished butler Erevis Cale, and the young, innocent servant Larajin. The chapters set up stories for each family member. These stories will unfold through the rest of the series, with one book focusing on one family member. It definelty is an original way to do a series. Hopefully the full-length stories will be as good as these chapter length ones were.

Erevis Cale is by far the most popular of the characters and with good reason. He is much like Drizzt in that he has a very honorable streak in him and love for the people around him, but his past is very dark and shady. I know he has gotten one trilogy dedicated to him, and I believe there is a second one planned. I was also drawn to Talbot. His story one of being cursed and having to be responsible for things he wasn't responsible for. Something we can all relate to at certain points in our lives.

These were just my two favorites. I am looking foward to reading all the stories about the family, and I'm hoping that they develop more series for the individual characters and not just Erevis Cale.

4 out of 5 stars Secrets at Stormweather!.......2003-03-08

This is an excellent novel, with only a few faults. The main gripe I have with the book is that it is truly a series of short stories, but is treated like a novel. What I mean to say is that there is no table of content that allows you to easily jump one from story of interest without having to scan through the entire book. The tales need not be read in order at all, and yet you are expected to do so.

Each story centers on one member of the Uskevren house, starting with the Patriarch all the way down to the maid. Each of these people seem to have some special quality about them, and their secrets are kept close to their breasts. Sometimes, it seems that there is a reason that each person is so special or has so deep and dark a secret. Clearly, there is more to this family than is initially let on, and only further tales will reveal what is so special about them.

In case you did not know, the shorts in this book are but preludes to the other novels in the series, they are basically the set up tales that get you interested, but really give you no completion. Many things are left unsettled by the end of this book.

The only downfall I can really see, and it has nothing to do with this novel in and of itself, is that the final book that was to be penned by Greenwood has been canceled. I would love to see another anthology of tales to close out the series.

Of them all, the Best tales deal with the matriarch, the butler, the maid, the daughter, and the second son. The Patriarch's tale is informitive, but dry and the heir's story has plenty of drama, but no depth. Two out of seven aint bad! Besides, they are still decent tales.

Warning: If you buy this book you will have to pick up the rest of the series!

5 out of 5 stars Genuinely, This Book Was A Great Read.......2001-10-22

I read this book very, very fast because of the fact that is is seven separate stories, there was something bran new every fifty or so pages, so you go through the book very fast. The stories are fast paced and exciting and good for anyone that likes a good fantasy or medieval based book, regardless of if you've read any other Forgotten Realms books. It can easily be a stand alone novel.

4 out of 5 stars A book with very interesting characters.......2001-10-18

This book was placed in the realm of Sembia, and the story took place in the city of Selgaunt - one of the biggest trading cities in Sembia. The book consisted of seven really good stories. Officialy it was an anthology, but I would't call it that because of the lenght of the stories and the way it was built up. The entire book told the tales of the rich merchant family - the Uskevren - and their lives and early days history.

The book had seven stories, and each of the stories told the tale of one of the family members. There were the story of Thamalon the Patriarch, which I liked very much. Normally i don't like anthologies, but this book felt as if it was a whole novel. All the different characters worked very well together.

It was a very dark book, after my opinion. There were lots of intrigue, and murders, and other terrible things, done for the purpose of outdoing each one's rival. As said before, the city of Selgaunt was a city of trade, so there was lots of plotting against each other. So the stories had all, a really good plot. Lots of other Forgotten Realms books is just hack-an-slash battle books, but this one had really kept me reading for a very long time, even if it was 4 past 12 in the night.

Normally i only read Dragonlance books, but i have always wanted to learn about the Forgotten Realms world. So it was because of that, I bought the book. It was a book designed to introduce new fans to the Forgotten Realms, so I immediately picked it up. But still, I don't think that the book serves that really well. There was still so many confusing things, that I didn't knew a heck about, but the well built plot lines kept me reading it, so it is absolutely not a bad book - even if it didn't serve as a great introduction book.

My favorite chacter in the book, must have been Thazienne. Maybe it is just because i am a boy, that i really liked her. After my opinion, Thazienne looked very much like Kitiara Uth-Matar from the Dragonlance saga. So if you have read some of the Dragonlance Legends books you will have a very good view of Thazienne.
The other characters in the book were also very good, especially Erevis Cale and the Maid. So i really hope that I, in future Sembia novels will learn a little bit more about The Realms than in this one. It was as if you only learned about the characters in this book, but it was absolutely not bad - remember that.
So i absolute recommend this book to all fantasy lovers and Forgotten Realms fans, for this is very good entertainment.

    Book Description

If the name Philip Nowlan is not well-known today, it is because it has been eclipsed by that of his most famous creation, Buck Rogers. Buck began life as Anthony Rogers, in Nowlan's first published story, Armageddon 2419 AD., and its sequel, Airlords of Han, quickly became a phenomenon that popularized science fiction in the first half of the twentieth century in the same way that Star Trek and Star Wars popularized it in the second half. But until now, Nowlan's other science fiction stories have been forgotten in the wake of Buck's immense popularity. Collected here with the original Anthony Rogers stories are The Time Jumpers, The Onslaught from Venus, The Prince of Mars Returns, and Space Guards, as well as the 1940 radio script Wings over Tomorrow.

Finally somebody has reprinted the original Buck Rogers stories as they originally appeared. The short biographical information at the start of this compilation is very interesting, bringing Philip Francis Nowlan out of semi-obscurity and into the cultural limelight he deserves. It's a pity he did not write more stories.

    2 out of 5 stars A Strange Pioneer.......2007-09-26

It's good of Wildside to provide an anthology of the science fiction of Philip Francis Nowlan; he's nearly forgotten today apart from his association with the Buck Rogers franchise. Nowlan was an odd duck to be writing science fiction, because these six stories reveal him to have been a religious fanatic of a particularly nasty variety, a type of fanatic who would be expected to be repelled by, rather than becoming a writer of, science fiction. However, the last two tales in the collection, dating from the end of his life, show that he had solved his religious hangups with the aid of some handy pseudoscience.

The first two entries are short novels that introduce the character of Tony Rogers, a 20th Century scientist carried by suspended animation into the 25th Century, where the hardy remnants of a long-conquered North American population are on the verge of rising up against their conquerors, the Air Lords of Han, who have ruled the world with their super science for centuries. These pulp tales from August 1928 and March 1929 are mainly concerned with Rogers' successful introduction of World War I military tactics into the "Second American Revolution." The Han are exterminated to the last man and girl (children are never mentioned or seen on either side), and are suggested to have been the soulless result of soulless extraterrestrials forcibly mating with Tibetans. A third short novel, from September 1929, brought more of the same, with the earth invaded by hordes of Venusians, fleeing some cataclysm. Although the Venusians cannot endure sunlight, and prefer to live underground deep within the Amazon jungles, so that they could easily coexist peacefully with humans, they are nevertheless exterminated to the last man and girl (again children never appear or are mentioned). Are they soulless? You be the judge: "These people of Venus did not belong on earth.... Perhaps, having had the effrontery to transgress some fundamental propriety of the Universe, it was ordained that they should destroy themselves in that accomplishment [of interplanetary travel]." Again, the main emphasis of the story is on the military tactics used against the Venusians.

Nowlan being hired by the Dille newspaper syndicate, to write the daily comic strip adventures of "Buck" Rogers, a character very loosely based on Tony Rogers, put an end to his magazine publications apart from a short and initially light-hearted time-travel romp, from 1934, in which a scientist and his airheaded female relative ("What does this lever do?") are thrown back to the days of the French and Indian Wars. Again, the author's main interest is in the tactical situations presented in this early form of guerrilla warfare. By this time both Nowlan and inept artist Dick Calkins had been largely replaced on the Buck Rogers strips, although their signatures continued to appear for years to come. Nowlan probably continued for a while to work on the radio series, but left the Syndicate entirely in 1939. In 1940 appeared two new short novels, "The Prince of Mars Returns," and "Space Guards."

The Martian tale is a throwback to Edgar Rice Burroughs of 1912; like all of Nowlan's pulp fiction up to, but not including, his final tale, it is written in that typically archaic expository style found in magazine fiction circa 1880 - 1900. But it shows two important evolutions:
first, the Martians are human, descendants of Atlantean refugees of ancient times, so they don't have to be exterminated. Instead, our hero merely has to overthrow a would-be dictator clearly suggested by Hitler and Mussolini--- and he kills the baddy with his bare hands, averting a bloody revolution. For the first time, also, Nowlan's hero shows mercy and kindness--- Martian wars are generally fought by trained apes riding trained dogs, who do battle for the love of their trainers, having no possible stake in the political conflicts that the wars presumably settle. Our hero goes after the dictator nearly single-handed, precisely, he tells us, to avoid a war and the many blameless ape and dog casualties that would otherwise result.

Nowlan's final story (he died of a stroke in 1940 at the age of 52) carries the Martian idea further. All the intelligent inhabitants of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are descendants of the same root race. Members of an interplanetary police force, the Space Guard, are
attempting to round up an outlaw couple and recover the priceless mineral they stole from a lunar base. Nowlan reuses ideas and gadgets from most of his earlier stories here, even when it makes no sense to do so. For example daily life in the outlaw stronghold as described in detail is just like that of the effete Han warlords in their mainly-underground cities--- yet the Han cities had been in existence for centuries, while the outlaw stronghold has existed for no more than a year! The story moves faster than any of Nowlan's other fiction, showing that his years of writing radio scripts and comic strip continuity had not left him unaffected.

Nowlan is a very minor figure in the history of science fiction, and an appreciation of just how minor he is, is afforded by the realization that the particular 1928 issue of AMAZING STORIES that carried the first installment of "Armageddon--- 2419 AD" also contained the first installment of E. E. Smith's novel THE SKYLARK OF SPACE. Smith's mindbending INTERSTELLAR adventure put all the space-operatic INTERPLANETARY adventures of the 1920s and 1930s very far into the shade. By 1940 the type of space opera that Nowlan had just arrived at was already obsolete by more than a decade; only a single new pulp, PLANET STORIES, existed to continue publication of such tales as Nowlan was only just beginning to write.

If Nowlan had never existed it seems unlikely that the history of magazine and book science fiction would have been very different. What Nowlan did was, through the medium of newspaper comic strips and radio, to bring to the great unwashed and semi-literate masses the gadgets and themes of late 1920s pulp science fiction. Rayguns and flying belts and space ships and futuristic cities were first encountered by the general public only as filtered through the modest talents and limited abilities of Nowlan and artist Dick Calkins.

This edition has a number of glitches caused by scanning the pulp text pages and not proofreading before publication; the garbled words are not too frequent, but much more annoying is the fact that nobody bothered to control the scanner's often random paragraph versus chapter formatting decisions, so that slight breaks within a chapter are treated as if they were new chapters, resulting in a pretty large waste of page space. I haven't seen such defects in more recent Wildside publications (this one is from 2005).

        Book Description

This volume introduces what has sometimes been called "the third component of western culture." It traces the historical development of those religious traditions which have rejected a world view based on the primacy of pure rationality or doctrinal faith, emphasizing instead the importance of inner enlightenment or gnosis: a revelatory experience which was typically believed to entail an encounter with one's true self as well as with the ground of being, God.

The contributors to this book demonstrate this perspective as fundamental to a variety of interconnected traditions. In Antiquity, one finds the gnostics and hermetics; in the Middle Ages several Christian sects. The medieval Cathars can, to a certain extent, be considered part of the same tradition. Starting with the Italian humanist Renaissance, hermetic philosophy became of central importance to a new religious synthesis that can be referred to as Western Esotericism." The development of this tradition is described from Renaissance hermeticists and practitioners of spiritual alchemy to the emergence of Rosicrucianism and Christian theosophy in the seventeenth century, and from post-enlightenment aspects of Romanticism and occultism to the present-day New Age movement.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great, fun book!.......2000-05-01

This recipe book is published by The Stinking Rose Restaurant, a famous garlic restaurant in San Francisco. Before Revealing the secrets of 36 of their garlic dishes, The book starts by explaining to you in layman's terms, information on how to purchase, store and prepare garlic. The author has a great sense of humor, while still managing to remain informative and on topic. The interior of the book has many illustrations that are often drop dead hysterical, which makes this a really fun book that everyone can enjoy.

The cooking instructions are fairly easy and simple; the dishes prepared at home often do not taste the same as the dishes you'd find at the restaurant. I usually end up eating at the restaurant instead, and this book becomes a valuable companion to me when I eat there. Generally speaking, this book is really worth your money; you just can't go wrong. Well, at the very least, You'd get a good laugh out of it, and have yourself a pretty good talk piece!

4 out of 5 stars nice compilation of vintage look images for your pages.......2007-10-02

Really nice, the CD lets you pick up the elements you want and use them.
smooth glossy prints though, so the CD does come in handy. As is probably true of the originals, you can see the pixels in the prints sometimes.

The instant memories French pages book has thicker cardstock glossy pages, and slightly higher resolution photos.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-05-27

This entire series of books "Memories of a Lifetime" is remarkable!! You get ready to use pages for scrapbooking or other craft projects - PLUS, you get a CD in the back of each one with all of the images contained in the books. You can reprint each page exactly as it appears in the book OR you can print the separate components that make up each collage pictured in the book. I have eleven of these books and plan to buy the others. They are amazing to work with. The images are very good quality and are all COPYRIGHT FREE, making them great for resale projects. I just can't say enough about how wonderful these books are. They are well worth the cost.

Joint Winner of the 2001 Whitley Medal. Finalist Scholarly Reference section - The Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing 2001.

This outstanding work is the ultimate guide for the identification of Australia's butterflies.

Nearly 400 species - all those currently recognised from Australia, plus those from surrounding islands - are represented, with all adults and some immature stages displayed in stunning colour photographs.

Introductory chapters cover the history of publications, classification, morphology, distribution, conservation and collection, together with a checklist of the butterfly fauna. The body of the text is arranged systematically, providing a wealth of information including description, variation, similar behaviour, distribution and habitat, and major literature references, giving a comprehensive summary of the present state of knowledge of these insects. Appendices provide details of those species recorded from Australian islands outside the Australian faunal subregion, those protected by legislation, the larval food plants, and the attendant ants. Extensive references, a glossary and an index of scientific and common names complete the work.

                  5 out of 5 stars Brief overview.......2002-01-21

The book contains excellent colour pictures of the Australian Butterflies, including BW plates under the species texts which are really useful. The text contains upto date information under the species accounts, but the general biology chapters remain similar to Common & waterhouse, with a few new inclusions, such as a section on photography. The book is esential for all with an interest in Australian Butterflies.

                        Product Description

Moths are often thought of as the ugly cousins of butterflies, yet their colours can be just as remarkable and, with over 20,000 species in Australia, their biology and lifestyles are far more diverse.

With striking colour photographs of live moths in their natural habitat, this guide illustrates all the major moth families in Australia, including some rarely seen species. It provides many curious facts about the unusual aspects of moth biology, including details on day-flying species, camouflage, moths that mimic wasps, larvae with stinging hairs, and larvae that have gills. This easy-to-read book includes sections on the iconic Witjuti grubs, Bogong moths, the giant-tailed Hercules moths of northern Queensland (one of the largest moths in the world, with a wingspan of over 25 cm), moths that release hydrocyanic acid in their defence, and moths that produce ultrasonic calls that bats learn to associate with a bad taste.

A Guide to Australian Moths highlights the environmental role of moths, their relationships with other animals and plants, and their importance to humans. It provides a unique introduction to the extraordinary diversity of moths found in Australia.

                          Book Description

Heliothine moths are major agricultural pests worldwide attacking a wide range of food and fibre crops. The direct costs to farmers of crop damage and control measures are enormous: Helicoverpa and Heliothis species account for billions of dollars lost worldwide each year.

This book is a base-line resource for research into new Helicoverpa/Heliothis control methods. Written for the non-taxonomist, purely taxonomic information is separated from that more widely required by most researchers. This work is relevant to everyone involved in Helicoverpa/Heliothis control.

General, concise summaries of the agricultural importance of heliothines, their biology, systematics, and morphology are given. An up-to-date summary of heliothine phylogeny - based on morphological and molecular information - provides a framework for organising and interpreting biological information about all heliothine moths and has worldwide relevance. The 38 Australian heliothine species are detailed with identification information and individual species treatments. All species are illustrated in colour, and there are many colour photographs of immature stages and live adults. Additionally there are 351 black and white images. Nomenclatural information of interest to taxonomists appears in an appendix, and includes a full checklist and detailed information of type specimens.

A CD-ROM packaged with the book contains a searchable database of all 14800 Australian heliothine specimens examined; this is a major research tool in itself. The CD-ROM also carries nomenclatural information suitable for loading into bioinformatics packages, and images of type specimens.

Did you know that The Reno Brothers was the original title of the Elvis Presley film Love Me Tender? That Charro is the only film in which Elvis sports a beard? Or that Raquel Welch made her film debut in Roustabout? Reel Elvis! contains these and thousands of other fascinating facts about the 33 films (31 features and 2 documentaries) that Elvis made before becoming "disenchanted with making movies." Author Pauline Bartel dedicates an entire chapter to each film, including plot summaries, song lists, trivia, and photos to fill readers in on all that there is to know about Elvis's movies. The book ends with "The Elvis Master Quiz," which anyone who reads this guide should pass with flying colors.

What was Elvis' favorite soft drink? The name of his customized Convair jet? His last Top 10 single? And you thought you knew everything about The King! Think again. W. Kent Moore and David L. Scott has amassed some mighty tantalizing, teasing trivia that will leave you all shook up. The soft-cover gem is as much as sourcebook of all things Elvis as a thought-provoking volume that rocks and rolls. There are more than 1,000 brain teasers
--- including fill-in-the blanks, crossword puzzles, word scrambles, hidden word games and multiple-choice questions. There's even a sprinkling of black-and-white photos, including one of The King next to the used BMW he bought in 1958 for ... Give you the answer? Don't be cruel. Turn to page 44.

This quiz book was really informative, yet fun to do at the same time. It kept me very busy one long Sunday afternoon. For the really true Elvis-fan this book is a must-have!! I must admit that I didn't get all the answers at once, but kept coming back to fill in the blanks! The questions are asked in a variety of ways (e.g. crossword, blockword etc.) so that you never get bored or unduly frustrated! Each chapter deals with different aspects of Elvis' career; you are tested not only on your knowledge of his music, but also of his movies. So, if you're a true Elvis fan (like me!!!) you'll buy this book and keep it aside for that lazy Sunday afternoon! Oh, and don't forget to use a pencil ... just in case you make an error, then you won't spoil that precious Elvis quiz book!!!!

The Ultimate Elvis Quiz Book is so creative, so unique, and so delightful! The authors have many different types of puzzles chock full of Elvis information. Other puzzles don't contain new information, but are just plan fun to answer, such as Letters to Elvis and Word Pictures. One quiz, If I Can Dream, speculates about what Elvis would be doing and recording now if he were still alive. There are even a couple of quizzes about other rock and pop stars who were Elvis' contemporaries. If you're a true Elvis fan, your book collection is not complete without The Ultimate Elvis Quiz Book! (This book is available from another publisher, but the Rutledge Hill book is clearly better because of the larger print and better quality paper.)

Paul Dowling claims to have the largest Elvis Presley record collection in the world, and he puts a good portion of it to use in this intriguing collection illustrating 226 album covers. The text is scant--the history in the album cover photos is the point here. These show the King's progress from lean, lip-curling rock idol to plumper, bouffant, Las Vegas star. Dowling also includes different versions of the same cover prepared to suit the varying tastes of Elvis' worldwide audience. RCA airbrushed in minor changes to give the Mexican Elvis a slightly more Latin macho air. The book will inevitably become a feature of any decent collection of Elvis memorabilia.

our Elvis fan club got all of us this book. it was a good book we all liked it. I liked it best in the parts about Elvis' movies and his family and his friends too. the part about when Elivs bought Graceland and when he built onto it and the changes he made was probably the funniest part. I recommend it to Elvis fans or Elvis fan clubs.

The book was recommended to me be a friend. I bought it and loved it. It's well written, organized nicely and full of interesting things about Elvis and friends. A really fun book for anyone who likes Elvis or lived during that period.

from just seeing the title i thought it was a elvis-bashing book but i read it and it was VERY MUCH funny and still respectful and tasteful. i thought it was gonna make fun of elvis but it was just a bunch of funny stories and trivia and stuff without being mean or rude or anything. i really recommend it if you like elvis.

This book has literally hundreds of factual errors, and that makes it useless as a reference guide. But those errors are not the worst of it. In the introduction, the author writes, " . . .Elvis was the antithesis of society's morals. His wild performances broke from the bland American mainstream of 'Ozzie and Harriet' or 'Father Knows Best,' and the oppressed, youthful minority went wild over this raunchy, flagrantly sexual boy from the wrong side of the tracks." Of course, none of that is correct. "Morals' or "wild" never entered the picture for Elvis in the 1950s. Kids went to his performances because the music was new and exciting.

If I only could have one fact source book about Elvis, this would be it. It contains the most complete overview of his life I have ever seen, compiled in chronological order and supplemented by detailed lists of Elvis data. A word of warning: If you want to keep your eyes closed to all but the positives in his life, this is NOT the book for you, because it contains the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of his life. I am of the belief he was the greatest popular entertainer of all time, and this book certainly attests to that. But he also had way more than his share of human foibles, and they are included too. I'm glad it's part of my research library, and I have and will refer to it often.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money to buy, a waste of time to read........1998-12-12

I have been an Elvis fan and collector since the fifties. I pride myself on my personal knowledge of and my extensive library on Elvis. If you want a book full of grossly erroneous information, this is it! There is no shortage of readily available data on every aspect of Elvis' life, but this "author" does not know how to do research and, clearly, was herself as ignorent on the subject of Elvis when she finished her book as she was when she started. A waste of money to buy and a waste of time to read! Useless as a reference book because it is full or major errors. I rate this book zero stars.
