Not Exactly the Nuclear Survival book I'd hoped for........2007-02-22
This book had the potential to be one of the great post-nuclear survival books like "Alas Babylon" but it just did'nt measure up. The actual story was far too short and the main character was too flamboyant to be any kind of serious survivor. Who actually ownes a Cheetah and a flying or jumping amphibious car? The book had some good survival information, the last half the book was a survival/technical manual. As for exciting fiction, my 14 year old daughter can write better stories.

The book's cover contradicts its contents. Even from that distance you certainly wouldn't want to be looking in the direction of the initial blast, since it might blind you, and you would want to find shelter from the blast wave. He did bring four-footed rations, however.
Learn while your entertained!.......2004-12-29
Not too many authors can involve you in a very entertaining story and teach you about survival all at the same time. Written when the threat of nuclear death was very real, Dean Ing takes the reader through the basics of surviving that situation with interesting characters, interesting settings, and fun equipment. Oh, one tidbit of real life info...Dean actually built that Lotus with the hover ability. Building cars, from the frame up, was a hobby of his. (12/04)

Not Ing's absolute best work, but still a keeper. The novella that comprises the first half of the book is tautly written, often wryly amusing, and a painless way to learn about the many, many ways you can fail to survive a real disaster. His novella's premise of the start of a nuclear war is less likely to happen now than when this was written -- but many of the same techniques that the characters use to save themselves can and probably should be used to protect yourself in the event of a "dirty" bomb in your vicinity, or other similar unpleasantness. I have recommended this book to many friends, and I think everyone should have a copy in their home library.

I liked the informational aspect of this book. There were a fair number of useful nuclear war survival tidbits. Many of the ideas implemented are the public domain work of a man named Kearny working out of the Oak Ridge National labs.
The weakness - and this is just my opinion - stems from the main chracter. I just couldn't identify with him. I like my characters to be ordinary people who are forced to struggle with no special resources but their wits. This guy dives a Lotus hovercraft and lives in a virtual retreat behind a chain linked fence for heavens sake! The kid in this story was so unsympathetic I disliked him from the start.
Other people love the characters, so who am I to gripe?

I am a social worker who serves child victims of sexual abuse and their non-offending caregivers. Most of the victims I see are or have been in counseling. Many still need help in working through the trauma of abuse. I have given many copies of "Shining Through" to these young ladies or their mothers. I have many books on recovering from sexual abuse but this one is the best book I've found for speaking to these young victims at their level of feeling and understanding. It is appropriate for the teen who tunes out authorities and for the girl who needs a tool for working through issues with her caregiver. I heartily recommend it.

A Promising Debut.......2004-11-16

Like Hitchhiking in Space was written during a man's journey of self-discovery. The title itself refers to the feeling of complete hopelessness that comes with many of life's disappointing episodes, as well as the blinding radiance that God's love can bring to a weary soul. In this book you will find confusion, dreams, pain, joy, infatuation, stupidity and love. In this book a man flees to the recesses of his soul to combat the darkness of himself and bask in the light of meaning. But most of all there is understanding to be had, and hope to be given to those who feel trapped in that glittering void.
Like Hitchhiking in Space is the first installment of the trilogy, Chronicles in Soul Expansion. Right now, our souls may be shrinking or growing. Hopefully growing.
This is important because with every experience, with every person that touches our lives, we learn how to live. Also, we must take care not to repeat mistakes, and learn from them. Like Hitchhiking in Space brushes upon this philosophy in order that the reader senses that it is a process, a complete set of trials that everybody must undergo. And in the end, everyone must find God. Beautiful poetry from the soul.
About the Author
Marcelle Dionne Fields was born in St. Louis, M.O. He graduated from Millikin University with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design in 1999. Though exceptionally gifted in the visual arts, Marcelle's passion for writing was sparked when his English professor acknowledged his talent. Since then he has been writing short stories, poems and even performing spoken word.
Fields is currently attending graduate school at Webster University, majoring in Business Administration. He is also working on his second book, High Definition Dreams and My Spirit Projector, chronicles in soul expansion II.

Depression.......2007-09-26
What a great book! The information and advise in this book are excellent. Depression is such a dark, deep place to be in. This book helps to lift you out of the dark and into the light. For some people this book will be enough to release the depression. For others it will be the perfect companion to professional help and medication. I advise everyone with any kind of depression to read this book. Prayer cures more problems then all the medications and counselors in the world.

This book is written by a Roman Catholic nun, and includes many prayers, poems and reflections about depression. I believe it is meant as a companion book to "Surviving Depression: a Catholic approach". If you only choose one of these two, I would recommend Surviving depression, A Catholic approach over this one, simply because it gives a better roadmap for how to survive than this book does.

NOT for the novice.......2003-09-26
This book is good for the cook who is experienced with his/her toaster oven broiler. It is a real and interesting cookbook. The recipes look good.
BUT it is not for the person who has bought his/her first toaster oven broiler and wants to know how to start using it. I need to know how long to broil a strip steak and have it rare inside and browned outside. I need to know if I can make 2 lbs of meat into a meatloaf and bake it in the toaster oven.
Eventually I will use this book, but it doesn't fill the needs I have now.

I was very disappointed in this book. The recipes were just ok. I would not cook any of this food on a regular basis. I enjoyed Pop It in the Toaster Oven book much better the recipes in that book were good and easy.

I bought Shack Chic as a "souvenier" after spending a summer working in the Cape Town townships with the youth there - I cannot think of a better object to take home and represent to my friends and family Cape Town's townships and South Africa as a nation. This photo-essay book, with brilliant colors and spectacular images, is a testament to the strength of South Africans and their innovation and resourcefulness even in the most destitute of living conditions. Portrays poverty in the post-Apartheid era not as the romanticized victimization of people but the hopeful and perservering will of humankind to live with digity.
