Book Description

Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) was the original transgressive author; the first word of his famous play Ubu Roi - "Shittr!" - changed the course of art and drama forever. Jarry's novels are equally outrageous, and the best of them are now again available in English. Where Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician is philosophical, The Supermale is carnal. Andre Marcueil, gentleman and scientist, has the ability to make love an infinite number of times in succession. Like a mock Jules Verne, Jarry describes the manner in which this Supermale proves his claim; after 82 times with a woman, attending doctors finally hook him up to a machine instead, with whom he merges in the book's - and the Supermale's - final climax. Barbara Wright's excellent translation, first published by New Directions, has been long out of print.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Sci-fi Novel of the Greatest Magnitude ..........2007-07-16

Our protagonist Andre Marcueil had grand ideas...so grand that his "everyday ordinariness became extraordinary".

Andre firmly believed that human capacity had no limits - believed it so fervently that he would risk his life: A ten-thousand mile race with a steaming locomotive at speeds greater than 300 miles per hour with no rest and no sustenance save for the cubes of perpetual motion food. To copulate with the same woman 82 times in twenty-four hours, or to recharge an electric chair designed to produce love.

Braggadocio - maybe, or maybe his futuristic ideas held something of substance, something an ordinary mind could not possibly grasp hold of. Andre Marcueil - Hercules, Frankenstein, or SuperMale.

The fusion of man and machine is not that uncommon a theme, but Jarry takes our protagonist one step further into the surreal - envisioning a better human race, where the age old philosophies of man are not only limited but pointless idiocies. The self-inflicted trials and tribulations of our protagonist in this story are beyond reason and ultimately absurd. But for all the absurdity, it is the story of a man's search for himself, a better self. 1920, at a time of great change in the world, the dawn of the modern age, Jarry brings into question how humans can take the manifestations of their minds and thrust them into reality, and yet, with all the trinkets and machines our genius minds invent, none of them seem to better us as people.

Above all, discretely woven into this tale is a love story, a heart wrenching sad love story. And what of Love...could someone so cruel and heartless as our protagonist actually love? Love being something beyond infinite and ungraspable - a shadow. "The Act of Love is of no importance, since it can be performed indefinitely." Love - an absurdity...a sentiment...not quite an act...more of an enfeebled sensation? Well to find love, one must understand God. Would Andre ever understand...could he understand? Could he see God in himself, even though his egotistical mania filled him with the belief that he was God. Even Jarry himself had his doubts: "If nothing is sacred and everything was absurd and meaningless, the logical conclusion is self-annihilation." Even now, in this truly modern age, Jarry was not far from the truth: Love is not a means to an end - it is the end in itself, for without it, no matter how many contraptions we strap to our backs, we will perish. We are the only machines that have the capacity to generate love. And in that lies the truth - The human capacity for love is in fact limitless.

Jarry's prose is eloquent and refined...a delicate balance of theorum and conjecture without the loss of poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Marvel and Laugh at the Patriarchy.......2002-12-20

From the turn of the last century comes this surrealistic novel that will make you laugh at the Patriarchy and its obsessions with Technology and Phallocracy. The great Poet and Pataphysician Alfred Jarry could see, using hallucinogenic insight, the foibles and evils of his own enculturated hyper-masculinity. What a vision. Not to be missed !!

5 out of 5 stars surprisingly compelling; seriously surreal.......1999-09-04

One often takes French proto-surrealist literature with a grain (or spoonful) of salt, perhaps due to the hollow stigma which Breton and others rendered the word 'surrealism.' This novel by the maniac Jarry was a helpful reminder that he and Apollinaire and a few others were really getting at something compelling. Jarry's Supermale is an hyperbolic monster of masculinity, riding 10000 miles on a bicycle at the speed of a locomotive to proclaim his desire for a certain woman, with which woman he proceeds, in order to prove a point, to copulate a total of 82 times in 24 hours. However, Andre Marceuil is clearly a self-portrait; descriptions of him read uncannily closely to Jarry's own physiognomy. Marceuil is a man intent on living his art, without pretentions or assistance. The sex that occupies the latter 40 pages of this rather short novel (80 pages total) is surprisingly sensitive and crazy, especially during a launch into a poetic hymn to Helen of Troy. Altogether a touching and inspirational nugget of strange virtuosity. Read it and regain your faith in the true surrealism. (if you have lost it.)

5 out of 5 stars A definite coup for the Explorer's Guild!.......2006-03-03

It's a real pleasure to get a gem like this one. Having a full report about the entire eastern lands is just great. The book is very descriptive and written as though Brann was actually walking through the eastern continents. He actually gives the impression that he is trolling (or would that be dwarfing?)through all these lands, seeing the sights, meeting the people, fighting monsters.

The book is very well paced and the order in which Brann travels through the different areas makes sense, as though he was actually walking through those lands. I was very impressed with the adventures and hooks sections of each area, as well as Brann's descriptions of the cultural and political climates of the different towns and counties. Knowing how things are working the Undercity (especially the horrors of dealing with the undead) are incredibly interesting, and even hearing about smaller places like Booty Bay or Hillsbrad make for a good read. I also like how we get to see places that haven't been talked about very much, such as Stromgarde and Kul Tiras. (Granted, we hear a lot about Daelin Proudmoore and his daughter Jaina, but nothing about what happened back home.) This book is something that any traveler through the Eastern continents should carry with them at all times.

Lots of tie-ins with the Warcraft novels, especially Blood and Honor and Lord of the Clans. Hearing about Tirion Fordring and Thrall again are always a plus.

I'm also very much enjoying the new prestige classes, though the Defias Renegade seems to me to be a strange mix of a thief and tinker. Both the Scarlet Crusader and the Royal Apothecary are very cool new prestige classes.

I have only one small beef with this book: it's only the eastern continents! We get a much more brief overview of Kalimdor in the Warcraft RPG book, but nothing about Northrend or the Sunken Isles out near the Maelstrom. Just something for Blizzard to think about!

Book Description

Critics agree: "Pickover's neoreality series is the hammer that shatters the ice of our unconscious." This groundbreaking science-fiction collection explores worlds separated from our own by imperceptible veils. In Liquid Earth, reality melts along a rustic Main Street in Shrub Oak, New York. The Lobotomy Club begins in a New Orleans bar, and Sushi Never Sleeps in a New York electronics store. Egg Drop Soup starts with a walk along the tranquil Chesapeake River. All familiar settings at first glance, but a new reality awaits....

You'll visit worlds replete with beautiful women and their surgically altered brains, fractal sex, Noah's Ark, hyperspace physics, hallucinating androids, prophetic ants, exotic sushi, satanic aliens, vitamin B-12, novel plastics, cosmic wormholes, and quests for God and the structure of ultimate reality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lobotomy Club is fantastic!!.......2002-12-30

Lobotomy Club is a wonderful sci fi novel that will attempt to entertain you and push your notions of reality all at the same time. The subtle blending of truth with fiction will leave you contemplating how much of what you have read is true, and how much is part of the wonderful environment you have been drawn into. One of the greatest parts of this book is its strong use of allusion which displays Pickover's adeptness with more subtle humor.
This is a wonderful read for most levels. You can take it at face value for a wonderful ride through a bizzare sci-fi adventure, or you can delve deeper and be rewarded with various little treasures for your efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Brain Surgery Can be Fun.......2002-09-14

In The Lobotomy Club, a "cerebral Mobius strip" (brain rewiring) lets people have strange visions. This book has something for people with different tastes, from UFOs to insectile aliens to prodromic dreams, to reality shifts. The lead woman has an artificial arm that is quite versatile, as you'll soon find out. I'm trying to determine which member of the Lobotomy Club intrigues me most -- probably it's the woman who always wears sushi jewelry.

To appreciate the Neoreality book series, I found that I had to open myself up to the strange sensations I felt while reading them. Go with the flow. Enjoy the oddness. Don't bother reading these books if you just want a standard novel. But if you enjoy fun and strange concepts, these are certainly a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Religion, Adventure, Brain Surgery.......2002-08-18

I have finished The Lobotomy Club and Liquid Earth, two of the four books in Pickover's Neoreality series. I can't say which book I like better. The Lobotomy Club was cool. In this book, people perform brain surgery on themselves to allow them to see religious visions and a "truer" or "higher" reality. As they explore a world filled with monstrous Biblical visions, Adam, Sayori, and their friends encounter a vast conspiracy and hellish dangers. Like Liquid Earth, this book had a fast pace and is filled with quirky, serious, and funny tidbits. One of my favorite scenes occurred in Sayori's high-tech apartment in which Adam meets the other members of the Lobotomy Club. They all have special talents, and many seem to be named after items you'd find on a sushi menu! Other favorite scenes involve a large insectile creature that stalks throughout much of the book.

As with Liquid Earth, Pickover's books make you question reality. The books in the series also make you wonder about religion and how we might open our minds so that we can reason beyond the limits of our brain. Pickover has a way of getting inside your head and scrambling it. Quirky, mind-expanding, emotional, creative, fun. (People who like The Lobotomy Club will also like Pickover's Liquid Earth, Heinlein's Job and Number of the Beast, Greg Egan's Diaspora, Philip K Dick's Ubik, and Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.)

The nature of first-century letters, background sources, and a word-study method all help show students with some knowledge of Greek how to trace Paul's reasoning through difficult texts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent resource for those interested in digging into the New Testament. It is a small book and not intended to be exhaustive but in its 167 pages of very readable print it covers a great deal. For example, chapter 5 covers "diagramming and conducting a grammatical analysis"; I love this chapter! In less than 20 pages Schreiner teaches nearly everything one might wish to know about understanding the sentence structure and function of the words in the sentence by building a "blueprint" of the sentence by dissecting and rebuilding it with "stick" diagrams.
On the other hand I got very little out of chapter 6 (the reason I did not give the book 5 stars). Its 30 pages are devoted to "tracing the argument" primarily through "arcing", a weak-sistered system of analysis that falls quite short of the system taught in chapter 5.
Each of its nine chapters has helpful references for the student who might want to further their studies in a particular area.
One caution though, the reader should have some basic understanding of ancient Greek or the book will be of diminished value.

4 out of 5 stars Comments on this volume, its series, and other guides to exegesis.......2006-09-13

Unfortunately, I think the reviewer who gave this book a one-star rating was a bit confused about the purpose of the book. This volume is not intended to be a commentary; it is intended to help students of the Bible to interpret it for themselves. This book and the other volumes in the 'Guides to New Testament Exegesis' series are certainly good beginning points, but it would be good if new editions were printed as the current ones are becoming a bit dated. While the exegetical approaches remain sound, it is the bibliographies - which are useful when current - that need to be updated from time to time; that way these guides would also continue to be helpful in directing students to other important sources.

Those who intend to pursue serious exegesis have probably already invested in the standard, which is Gordon Fee's "New Testament Exegesis;" it is used at many seminaries. For those who want to advance both their Greek and exegetical skills, I recommend "Biblical Greek Exegesis" by George H. Guthrie and J. Scott Duvall.

For the average lay reader who wants to become more proficient at interpreting and understanding the Bible, without necessarily wanting to take an in-depth and scholarly exegetical approach, I recommend either (or both) of the following: "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart and "A Basic Guide to Interpreting the Bible" by Robert H. Stein.

Lastly, for those seeking good commentaries (like the unfortunate negative reviewer) and as a more up-to-date supplement to the bibliographies in the series of which "Interpreting the Pauline Epistles" is a part, I recommend D.A. Carson's "New Testament Commentary Survey," which is updated regularly; it is currently in its fifth edition, which was published in 2002, but a new, sixth edition is scheduled for release in January 2007.

5 out of 5 stars From Beginner to Expert this is a GREAT Tool for any Exegete!.......2006-02-25

Schreiner does a wonderful job of taking any student of biblical exegesis through the process of developing an accurate exegesis of any Pauline Epistle. His reliance on grammar clues and diagramming make this an extremely helpful book for theologians who wish to allow Scripture to speak for itself. If you are seeking to better understand Scripture...this book is a MUST!

1 out of 5 stars Forget this Book.......2006-02-18

The author is a pompastic lofty self complementative intellectual. This book is not for the lay person. The author often demurs from actually giving a commentary (exegesis) referring the reader elsewhere.

My advise is go elsewhere first, .... before buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars Make this the second book you read on cribbage.......2000-07-23

If you're serious about separating yourself from the cribbage playing masses, it is vital to master the concept of board strategy, in which your decisions to play offensively or defensively are governed by the score (or board position, to use cribbage parlance). This book has the best treatment of it. This is the second book you should read about cribbage (DeLynn Colvert's "Play Winning Cribbage" is the first), and you should go over it and Colvert's book again and again until you feel confident evaluating board position and formulating a playing strategy to meet it.

One caveat about this book: it does gets its share of criticism from experienced players, since it contains some mathematical errors and a fair amount of questionable tactical advice. Fortunately most of the errors are in the details, and don't undermine the author's fundamental points. Besides, part of the process of learning the game is to independently evaluate different author's perspectives. As you'll discover, the "authorities" don't agree about every play. Concentrate on Chamber's discussion of board strategy, and don't assume that you have to agree with everything he recommends. Just make sure that when you do disagree, it's for a good reason, one that you can explain in words...

4 out of 5 stars A good treatise on a reasonable approach to the game.......1998-12-27

Although there are a number of technical errors in the concept's description, the basic approach is sound. I rank this among the best of the 10-12 books I have read on the subject.

                  Book Description

                  Urban Studies

"A remarkable and timely book. . . . Must reading." William Julius Wilson

Offering a new vision of community-based regionalism, this book arrives just as "smart growth" measures and other attempts to link cities and suburbs are beginning to make their mark on the political and analytical scene. The authors make a powerful case for emphasizing equity, arguing that metropolitan areas must reduce poverty in order to grow and that low-income individuals must make regional connections in order to escape poverty.

A hard-hitting analysis of Los Angeles demonstrates that the roots of the unrest of 1992 lay in regional economic deterioration and that the recovery was slowed by insufficient attention to the poor. Regions That Work then provides a history and critique of community-development corporations, a statistical analysis of the poverty-growth relationship in seventy-four metro areas, a detailed study of three regions that have produced superior equity outcomes, and a provocative call for new policies and new politics.

1 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2006-07-28

I read through this the other night. Lots of pretty colors and eye candy, but ultimately this book was deeply unsatisfying. Edward Gomez does a hack job of piecing the ideas together and forming coherent perspectives on various movements within the world of graphic design. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A series of books with a superior shelf-life.......2002-07-07

Rockport puts out an outstanding graphic design line. Their series of graphic design books entitled New Design, of which this book is part, features work of what I would call Graphis Annual caliber. For this reason, I think you can buy these books and feel reasonably certain that they will last longer, as relevant resources, than some of the ultra-trendy, flashy, but essentially shallow design books in the market now.

As our friends on the infomercials might say: "You COULD spend THOUSANDS of dollars on a guided tour of global graphic design ca. 1999-present, but WHY WOULD YOU?!" My advice: Snap up the entire City-By-City New Design series while it is still available. (My favorites of the series are London and Los Angeles, but that is merely personal taste.)

5 out of 5 stars For Designers Who Want To Be on the West Coast.......2001-03-02

I picked up this book because I am a graduating graphic design student who wanted to see what the rest of the world is designing. This book is great for those who want to see what kind of work is coming from great designers on the west coast. Each company is headlined and has its own pages; I found this great in case you want to see a companies work before you send a resume or portfolio to them. Businesses may find this book interesting as to how design is being handled nationally and what each design firm specifically caters to. Overall, I recommend this book to those who are interested in researching different ideas in the design world and businesses looking for a variety of strategies in their design work.

Born in 1907, Alexandr Hackenschmied is one of the founders of modern Czech photography and film. He is better known here as Sasha Hammid, the name he took upon becoming a United States citizen in 1947, having fled Nazi persecution in his native Czechoslovakia in 1939. Since then he and his wife, Maya Deren, have played a key role in American avant-garde film. Both by himself and in collaboration with other artists, Hackenschmied made a number of important documentaries--including the 1964 film To Be Alive!, made with Francis Thompson, which was awarded an Oscar for Best Documentary in 1967. His photographic work, though less well known here, is equally worthy of praise. In it we see his dynamic conception of space--honed with years of experience as a cameraman and editor--and the combination of formal perfection with deep emotional resonance, the meeting of the artist's mind with the mind of the audience.
