Book Description
Senhor Francisco, a once powerful state minister and a personal friend of the Portuguese dictator Salazar, is incapacitated by a stroke. As he lies dying in a Lisbon nursing home he reviews his life and his loves. The emotional turmoil enveloping Francisco's family finally catches up with him when the Carnation Revolution severs the dictatorship and the old regime tumbles. Beset by paranoia, Senhor Francisco remains a large but empty shadow of his former self. An international best-seller and the novel that established Antunes's reputation in Europe, The Inquisitors' Manual is a rewarding and stunning piece of art that shows the damage tyranny does to each layer of society.

Dictatorship Dementia.......2005-07-25
This Portuguese novel is a mesmerizing and surrealist look at an obscure episode of history, though it's rather drifty and inconclusive. The real-life dictatorship in Portugal of Admiral Salazar (1932-1968) is examined through the life and relations of his self-righteous lackey Senhor Francisco, who has become old and washed up, bitter about being passed over as Salazar's successor, and is now wasting away in a demeaning nursing home. Each chapter is narrated by different characters who reminisce, often bitterly or sarcastically, about Francisco's brutal rise and fall. This includes his neglected family members, abused employees, pampered but slipping aristocrats, and various sycophants and opponents. Antonio Lobo Antunes uses this expository method to delve into the trials and tribulations of people living under a dictatorship, and this is especially interesting when it reveals the harsh class segregation of Portugal during that period, with the upper class feeling entitled to the dictatorship's favor, oppressing the working classes, and complaining about more equitable social developments that they're too lazy to stop.
The thoughts of these types of characters, as well as underlings whose lives were damaged by Francisco's brutal treatment, are the true treasures of this novel, as we learn how average lives are distorted by bizarre politics, by way of real historical trends in Portugal. But the underlying difficulty of the book is that it is all in the form of fictional confessionals, with very little plot for the reader to hang onto, in favor of personal developments from an increasingly unwieldy cast of characters. Also, Antunes presents each character's thoughts in a non-linear, stream-of-consciousness style that surely represents the inner thought processes of confused and angry real people. The problem is that every single person thinks in this same style, making the book rather repetitive and drifty. Antunes' unique writing style and intriguing look at the human side of Portuguese history and politics are certainly fascinating and are likely to keep you interested. However, with the voluminous character-driven approach, you'll get the feeling that the novel isn't really leading anywhere conclusive. [~doomsdayer520~]
Magnificent work........2004-10-23
I just loved this book. It's deep,it's tragic, it's moving but it also has great humor.
It tells the story of the downfall of an upper class family following the leftist revolution that took Portugal by storm in 1974. It's told by several people, all inter-related,like João, the helpless son of a powerful, arrogant land owner, close to the high ranks of Government, who now lays dying in a hospital bed, João's wife, Sofia and her very rich family, the cook ,the father's former secretary and mistress, etc.
Thus a very rich portrait of the Portuguese political and social scene of the pre-revolution days emerges, with dictator Salazar reigning supreme.
The characters are very powerful. Some you hate, like the father, some you really feel for, like João. He reminded me of the character named Balthasar in «TheBeastly Beatitudes of Balthasar B.» by J.P. Donleavy. Has the same kind of vulnerability.
This is my favorite book by Antonio Lobo Antunes. He really knows how to tackle all this powerful stuff, like love and hate and incest and rape. Still he manages to make you laugh, sometimes. And cry too.
A Readable Consciousness Novel.......2003-11-06
Most reputable journals have already reviewed this novel favorably, and inside these reviews most have mentioned its author as the perennial Nobel prize contender.
Presumably, then, there is no need to defend the novel's literary merits.
Instead, I will focus on why I love this novel:
Besides the torrential prose that bends itself on the page like the best of Woolf, and besides the summation of consciousnesses that together trap the aftermath of a dictatorship like no plot-based narrative could, this novel surprises the reader by accomplishing what most time-shifting consciousness novels have never offered us: readability.
The energy of the prose is such that we are fast moving between disparate places in time, but through repetition Antunes creates place holders in the readers' mind, such that you end up with a paragraph like:
"Don't kiss me"
"Open you mouth, you bugger, thanks to you I'll miss the five o'clock bus, Jesus.."
"Don't cry Francisco, please don't cry, it's useless to cry"
the elm trees on the square of Palmela, the melancholy Major spreading wide his dismayed hands
"I'm afraid there's nothing we can do, official instructions from the Prime Minister, we can't antagonize supporters.."
Confusing, yes, but only if we had not heard those phrases over and over before. In the aforementioned paragraph, the character's consciousness wanders to three different time periods, and yet the reader seamlessly jumps time along with the character's mind because phrases like "don't kiss me" have already being repeated in fully developed scenes.
Since this' an Amazon review I do not have to end with a summarizing literary sound-bity sentence.
Ack.
Oh, and if you love Saramago and Marquez's "Autumn of the Patriarch," you'll love Antunes.
This isn't a bad book, but.......2003-08-28
I thought this book had a great deal of potential. The subject matter was bleak, yet it had purpose. Stream of consciousness can be quite enlightening when done right. Unfortunetly, I could not get involved in this book. Perhaps it was because it is a translation, but I don't know. There were certain passages that were quite lyrical, while others left me totally lost. Perhaps one day I will try this book again.

4 stars!.......2007-08-21
My 12 year old son who is obsessed by warhammer loved this book. he recommended it to me,but as i am only the facilitator of warhammer and not an aficionado, i declined. he really enjoyed it though!!
Wow!.......2007-05-13
The book follows Heiko an investigator for the empire as he investigates a string of robberies through out the empire.
I am unable to put into words how terrible this book is. I am a huge fan of the war hammer fantasy world. This book portrays the Skaven in a very unskaven like manner. As many of you know the Skaven thrive on being paranoid and killing each other. Multiple times through out this book the "main skaven" thinks his second in command betrays him and not once did he do anything about it. Later, at a critical point in the story the Skaven are ordered to open up the gate to their fortified position to meet an oncoming group of Dwarf slayers head on; yeah that sounds real Skaven like. Also the skaven have an air ship and they know how to fly gyro copters. Yeah thats right, an airship, they created one.
The hero of the book overcomes overwhelming odd by defeating a beast from clan moulder, survives a run-in with a Grey Seer, and battles what i believe would be a warlord and survives. It gets to a point where the things he battles and defeats just gets ridiculous.
After reading this book I believe that Bruno Lee knows nothing of the skaven or how they should behave. This book was thrown away not fit for anyone else to read.
Pretty Good.......2006-05-25
This is a pretty good Warhammer story featuring Humans, Dwarfs, and Skaven.
Heiko Geissner is asked to investigate what seems to be an ordinary robbery from a museum containing many artifacts. However, it soon becomes clear to him (to the reader a lot sooner) that this is no ordinary robbery. His investigation reveals a sinister plot that could cause a war and even the destruction of the Empire.
This is a pretty entertaining read, and although the ending is not only predictable and cliche, I couldn't help but smile--I was glad I purchased and read this book, and I think that Warhammer fans like myself will be too.

Great Package.......2007-04-02
I love the package of this Hardcover collection. Great way to get your hands on the early Deadman stories. If you are a Deadman fan this is a must.
This would have been a 5 star review but the newly inked story really takes away from the flow of the stories (kind of like Captain America 112 in the middle of Steranko's run).
Newly "inked" story ruins the entire book.......2006-08-27
Don't be fooled by the description of the newly "inked" story in the other reviews. Neal Adams has completely redrawn and RE-COLORED (using a jarring computer coloring style) the first of his stories in this volume. It destroys the narrative flow completely. The revised version looks like one of his bad Conitinuity titles from the 80's. Remember those? Yeah--his art wasn't in top form then, was it? And remember the bad coloring on those books? That's exactly what he did to the story in this hardcover. It doesn't fit into the rest of the book and drags the whole thing down with it. For a fancy archival edition, DC really messed up here by letting Adams tinker with his own work.
As bad as Lucas tinkered with the original Star Wars trilogy, this is worse. It's as inappropriate as if Lucas had not only added bad CGI, but also replaced all of the actors, altered the camera angles, and changed the colors of every costume. That's, in essence, what Neal Adams has done to his own work. I recommend 90% of this book. But the other 10% really ruins the whole package.
New life for Deadman.......2005-09-18
The Deadman Collection is a beautiful high quality format that is appropriate for these wonderfull examples of comic book art. Carmine Infantino, Neal Adams, Robert Kanigher, Bob Haney and George Tuska, these are the iconic names of the silver age of comics. They combined to make the creation of Arnold Drake's Deadman a high point in the history of DC. A slip covered hard bound that looks wonderful on the shelf next to the Legion Archives and Marvel Masterworks, I can recommended it strongly to anyone interested in the adventure comic genre. My only critisism is that the story from Strange Adventures #206 was re-inked by Neal Adams. George Roussos' orginal inks apparently were a dissappointment to Adams. The new inks look much too different from the other contempory Deadman stories and somehow slightly taints the flavor of the series for me. However this is a small thing and does little to diminish the importance of this book to me nor my delight at reading these stories again after so many years.
The best collection of Neal Adams artwork and then some........2005-06-30
If your a fan of Neal Adams art then this is a must get. Yes it is quite expensive, but its worth it. The series retains it original colors (wich were remastered when given it's first reprint in the early 80's)only one story is completely redrawn (and recolored?) by Mr. Adams himself and I have to say that it looks really well done. The rest however is untouched and looks even better now then it ever had when it first came out in the sixties. other artists are also on display here as well like Carmine Infantino (the first deadman story), George Tuska (Challengers of the Unknown story) and an uncredited Jim Aparo (Aquaman backup stories). The latter Two stories just mention shows more work by Neal Adams and are reprinted for the first time in this collection; deadman related of course. Great writing and great artwork this is propably the finest collection on Neal Adams work ever printed.
A Magnificent Collection.......2003-09-06
This is a gorgeous volume, beautifully reproduced on hard stock paper, and it definitely belongs in the library of all comic book fans. Seeing Neal Adams' work reproduced with high quality printing is a real treat -- it's as if we'd only ever seen the art through a dirty window. If there's one problem, it's that the newly inked version of the second story which Adams did especially for this book makes one wish he had done the same to all of his art. For those unfamiliar with "Deadman," it's a classic revenge story with a supernatural angle: acrobat Boston Brand is murdered by person or persons unknown to him; he's allowed to come back from the dead to track down his own killer. But there's a catch: Brand is a spirit, and has to take over the bodies of living people in order to pursue his quest; the people he possesses have no memory of what happens while they're possessed. Created by Arnold Drake in 1967, the stories (by several writers) are solid and hold up well, and are given their real power by Adams' incredible art. The drawings crackle with energy and emotion, sometimes literally breaking out of the panels. Adams set new standards for comic book art and story telling when he did this work, and it's easy to see how he influenced the next generation of artists. DC Comics is to be highly commended for putting together such an outstanding volume.

A Passion For Seeing, Fraderick Franck.......2005-10-11
The sketches that accompany the chapters are wonderful as usual. Francks books are pure delight and everyone will enjoy them. Each chapter referrs to one of his journeys and or previous books. Since I already own many of his art books I felt this was duplicating what I already had in my library. I suggest buyers check the chapter titles for what they too may already have on hand.

Excellent!!.......2003-03-11
I have passed this book and many of it's recipes to friends and fellow bakers. Easter would not be the same without the challah, Christmas without the rolls and many a meal with friends and family without the baguettes. This book is great for even the ameteur baker. My copy is currently in about four or five yeasty and flour-y pieces. I highly recommend it!! And it's a great price!
Mom uses the book so much it is falling apart.......2000-07-06
I would like to order this book for my Mother. She makes the best bread, pies, & pizza dough from the recipes in this book. I hope they publish it again. Her's is falling apart. It is in about 5 pieces and she still manages to find her favorite recipes, but I can't find her recipes. I want a copy for myself so I can make great bread like her. I would recommend this to anyone who has just started making breads or to someone who has been making bread for years.

Great homemade bread recipes.......2003-08-12
I have made several of the recipes from this book and every one has turned out great! There are several recipes that have ways to make good bread in a short amount of time. There are also many quick breads that make good gifts and are easy to make. I have used other bread recipes but the ones in this book are outstanding. It's also written in a homey, back to the farm style that makes you want to try out the recipes for your own family. You couldn't buy a better bread book.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
