5 out of 5 stars A lesson in humanity.......2006-06-27

Ibn Fattouma, or Quindil as his father called him, is about to depart for the quest of the land of Gebel, a place considered by many to be a miracle of countries, perfection itself, because the world seems to him loathsomely jaundiced and not to be born or lived in.
Quindil's long journey to Gebel will take him to different countries: the land of Mashriq, land of Haira, land of Halba, land of Aman and land of Ghuroub. Each of these countries shows social and political institutions similar to the ones we know, be it a kingdom, a democracy or a totalitarian regime and with much humour Mr Mahfouz depicts in a fairytale like prose the absurdities of each system.
The last chapter is called The Beginning because after visiting five lands, Gebel finally comes into view far in the distance on top of the Green Mountain and Quindil is about to ascend its winding path.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting.......2005-11-14

This short novel offers a very interesting and contemplative exploration of the difficult political systems. Ibn Fattouma experiences living in the traditional monarchy, the totalitarian state, the liberal republic, and the democratic country. His long journey subjects him to fascinating mind cultivating experiences as well as horrific sufferings. At the end he goes in pursuit of an illusive- or real- mountain symbolic of the utopia or El Dorado. People will never find comfort or stability regardless of where they are and the circumstances that surround them and they will go on searching for the perfect place on this earth.

5 out of 5 stars An Imporant Little Read.......2005-06-23

I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and found it a very interesting tale. It took me a little while to orient myself with the unfamiliar style, but it soon became clear and I was eager to find out what would happen next.

A concise story, following a traveller through many lands of varying levels of "civilisation", religion and governance, examining each in light of the traveller's homeland, taking lessons from each. I especially liked the ending, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions. Sadly, despite it's important message of introspection and constructive criticism, I fear this one won't have the wide readership it really deserves.

5 out of 5 stars A quick enjoyable and thought provoking read........2005-01-04

Travel with Ibn Fattouma as he searches for a Utopia planning to return home to Medieval Cairo with lessons for his homeland. Visits with different societies, with different governments and the wise men who define and idealize `their' systems also show failures from wars and inequities as our `hero' visits and twice finds loves to settle in with local wives and families. Less monothematic than Voltaire's Dr. Pangloss in Candide, the story has some of the same broad strokes and encourages pause for reflection. We learn he will likely reach the goal of his quest but will never know whether he chose to stay or was unable to return to teach his homeland. We reflect on the character of our own state and life. All is not for the best in the best of all possible worlds (with apologies to Dr. Pangloss).

3 out of 5 stars Another attempt to scale the Tower of Babel?.......2004-03-19

I am a fan of Naguib Mafouz, and I eagerly picked this novel up, hoping that it would be as transporting as Arabian Nights and Days. The journey of Ibn Fattouma disappoints: it has nowhere near the lyricism of Arabian Nights and Days or the sophisticated interweaving of fable, magic and reality.

Readers who enjoyed the Cairo Trilogy, a series of three realistic novels, and who want to sample Mafouz' more iridescent writing should not start with this book. That written, The Journey of Ibn Fattouma does have things to offer those interested in political science, false utopias, or even fledgling democracies.

Others reviews on the page have eloquently captured the different societies that Ibn Fattouma visits on his journey to Gebel. I wondered throughout the book if this was a parable for the Tower of Babel, a story found in the Christian Old Testament, the Hebrew Talmud and the Muslim Koran. In the story as I know it, God punished the Summerians for building a tower to heaven because they were trying to become God, or at least outshine him. The Tower becomes a symbol for perfection, and like many perfections, an unobtainable one. Thus, it was interesting to me that after Ibn Fattouma visits all these supposedly perfect societies Haira, Halba, Aman ('hope' in Arabic), he finally reaches Gebel, situated on a mountain.

      Book Description

Tarzan had renounced his right to the woman he loved, and civilization held no pleasure for him. After a brief and harrowing period among men, he turned back to the African jungle where he had grown to manhood. It was there he first heard of Opar, the city of gold, left over from fabled Atlantis.
It was a city of hideous men -- and of beautiful, savage women, over whom reigned La, high priestess of the Flaming God. Its altars were stained with the blood of many sacrifices. Unheeding of the dangers, Tarzan led a band of savage warriors toward the ancient crypts and the more ancient evil of Opar . . .

The Return of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs contains even more adventure, romance and enthralling action than Tarzan of the Apes. The New York Sun hailed it as, "High-adventure ? ten times better than Tarzan of the Apes."

      4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

Tarzan decides it is best if he leaves Jane, and returns to Africa. He falls in with a couple of dodgy noble types, and ends up having some Arab adventures, joins the Waziri tribe, and eventually ends up reunited with Jane in Opar.

The only problem he has is that one of the powerful women of Opar wants his body, and is not too happy Jane has prior claims.

Revelation of his position, marriage and return eventuate.

      5 out of 5 stars It's a classic!.......2007-01-05

It was ordered for my daughter. When children show an interest in worthwhile reading, one doesn't hesitate to supply them with what they want.

5 out of 5 stars TARZAN TAKES PARIS!.......2006-03-31

That's not the whole story of course but it's an impressive part of it. Tarz renounces his family name, fortune and the woman he loves, giving it all to his cousin, and he does it all in Wisconsin! Yup, Wisconsin. Hurting from the ordeal, he heads off to Paris to forget about Jane. Wow, the Apeman in the City of Lights! So he spends time in Paris, almost has an affair with a Russian noblewoman, whups on her brother(an evil Russian spy), hangs out in art galleries and operas and eventually joins the French Secret Service out of boredom. All this is just the set-up for the rest of the novel. The book does seem to end too quickly but I think that has more to do with the serial/pulp nature of the story's publication deadline than any fault of the author. Tarzan and The Return of... are an entertaining 0ne-Two punch. Anyone who reads #1 should finish the experience by reading #2. I wish someone would make a film of this book, it's more interesting than the first one.

      4 out of 5 stars Magnifique!.......2006-03-02

This was the second Tarzan novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It picks up right where the first Tarzan book left off. Jane is engaged to Tarzan's cousin and Tarzan is sailing back to Europe. Will Tarzan and Jane end up together? Of course, but there will be many obstacles before they get there. This is a solid adventure novel, which fans of old time pulp fiction will enjoy.

      4 out of 5 stars Treasured memories.......2005-12-04

When I was a kid (thirty years ago) my dad had an old beaten copy of this book that my three brothers and I readr, reread and probably took worse care of than we should have. I remember the cover vividly- Tarzan fighting a lion, but dressed in what would be considered traditional Arab garb. Every chapter had it's own illustration- THE TREASURE VAULTS OF OPAR featuring Tarzan leaping across a wide chasm!

I reread these books again in my teenage years and found this one to be my favorite. I think I enjoyed it even more than TARZAN OF THE APES.

The story begins with Tarzan crossing the Atlantic after leaving Jane and her family on a train platform in northern Wisconsin (a region of the world I call home) and meeting, not for the last time Rokoff and Paulvitch, two Russian spies who make it their life's goal to humiliate and destroy the Ape Man. Their first meeting includes Tarzan spoiling a plan to blackmail a Count and Countess who quickly become Tarzan's friends.

Later, in Paris, Rokoff and Paulvitch manipulate the Count into challenging Tarzan into a pistol duel, which Tarzan both wins and loses.

Tarzan arrives in Africa again later, ignominiously tossed off a liner by the two mad Russians. He swims ashore and is immediately in his element again.

Meanwhile, Jane and her father, along with Cecil Clayton (Jane's fiance') arrive ashore in Africa following a harrowing period on the ocean in a rowboat when their yacht founders.
Tarzan visits Opar, the fabled city of Atlantians where he dukes it out with savage men and the beautiful high priest, La.

How he and Jane reunite and Cecil's fate, as well as Tarzan claiming his birthright are all part of a story that you need to read to enjoy.

Is Burroughs the greatest writer of the 20th Century? Maybe not, but he is one of the premiere storytellers. This book is one of the most satisfying of the series. It also sets up many adventures in the next dozen, or so, books. La, Opar, Paulvitch and Rokoff are all revisited.

Take the trip- it's worth every second.

3 out of 5 stars ST: Strange New Worlds IV.......2002-04-17

This is the fourth installment of the Strange New Worlds series highlighting new talent writing the the genre of TREK. Talented fans submit short stories written for a contest for publication.

In the past, we saw some exceptional talent and originality, storylines that took you to areas of TREK that only short stories could. This anthology was engaging but fell a tad short of the prevoius three. I'm sure the fans have not lost interest, but I'm wondering if the editor has or maybe his direction and view of the TREK universe has been skewed.

There are 22 short stories contained in the anthology that continue in the different genre of the TREK series. I found that these stories to be good and thoughtfully written. Entertaining to a degree but a spark missing.

I wouldn't pass this volume up though as it will show the maturing process of some very promissing writers... future of TREK is in these pages a little recondite, but emerging nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Fourth installment, while not as strong-- still a must buy.......2001-10-01

If you ever wanted to grow up to write Star Trek books or movies-- get this book. I must disagree with most of the other reviews-- this book IS worth having for any Trek fan. (For non-fans you probably won't be interested.)

I will agree on the point that this book is not as strong as the first three, but that it is only off by a little. However, to say that the stories were not as strong, or somehow less than the other three is not true.

You will enjoy at least one story from each section, The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager for sure. For die hard fans you get to read stories by other fans! For would-be writers, actors or producers, the series shows you how 20+ people with no publishing experience can write a story and get it published.

Well it is clear that this concept has long since run out of steam with this the fourth, and easily the weakest of the series. It boggles the mind that the garbage that is in this collection could be the best of the "hundreds" of submissions. In fact many of the stories in this collection are either pointless drivel or obvious plagarism from original scripts. (* I can't help wonder what the original writers of the shows must think when they see their ideas trashed by well meaning but misguided fans !) Of course much of the blame must be directed at the editors who choose the works that go into these books, as it was their job to assemble original, exciting and worthwhile contributions. Unfortunately this collection has few worthy efforts and as for a fifth book, well I think they should quit now, before they do any more damage to the Star Trek legend.

3 out of 5 stars A nice mix of stories.......2001-06-09

I have thorougly enjoyed the 3 previous offerings of fan written Star Trek Short Stories and Volume IV while overall enjoyable was not filled with as many stories that truly stood out for me.

As usual a variety of writing styles just as you would find with any anthology of short stories. What truly makes these "Strange New Worlds" volumes so enjoyable is that the stories are all written by fans. Not professional writers but just people who enjoy the show and have expressed their appreciation for it by letting their imaginations soar. They pay tribute to a cultural epic they enjoy through the written word.

Two stories that I know I will be revisiting were the light and funny TOS piece "A Little More Action" and "Tears for Eternity", also a TOS story. But the one story moved me enough to be glad I bought this book. "Isolation Ward 4". If you enjoy trek and short stories you should appreciate the stories in "Strange New Worlds IV".

                        1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2001-05-31

...like the arrival of warm weather in Chicago (currently 50 and it's 30 May for cripes sakes...brrrr), I eagerly await Strange New Worlds. But starting from the cover (what is that thing on there?) to the absence of introductory remarks from DWS (yeah, I actually read it...gives me an idea on what went on during the selection process), SNW-IV left me wanting. Unlike I-III, IV only had a few stories that were interesting and/or entertaining. Granted, I have high expectations given the past three collections (and each were terrific). IV just seemed like it ran out of gas (ideas) and was just going through the motions for the sake of maintaining the franchise. I love fan fiction...so many different point of views (fresh minds, new ideas) but only two stories are worth recommending, hardly enough to justify purchasing the book. Borrow a friends or check it out at your library...

                        Book Description

The Christian life isn't always a walk in the park. Children of Christian parents do die. Christian businessmen do lose their jobs. And husbands of Christian wives do cheat. Being a Christian doesn't protect you from the tough punches life throws.

Taking fourteen strategies from the biblical account of the Israelite journey, Walking with God on the Road You Never Wanted to Travel offers real hope to those on an unexpected, difficult journey. For forty years the Israelites wandered through a devastating wilderness, suffering many losses, and yet learning some timeless lessons. These lessons, presented here as strategies for modern believers, are simply stated, clearly explained, and beautifully illustrated with dramatic and inspiring stories.

The name of this book is misleading. The title leaves the impression that this book will present deep insights into the mind of God on the topic of God and human suffering, when in fact, that is not the subject at all.

The title of this book should be "How to Walk with God on the Road You Never Wanted to Travel". Mark Atteberry makes it VERY plain and clear at the beginning that this is a HOW TO book, only, and not a book that seeks to answer the WHY questions.

The exodus of the Israelites out of the land of ancient Egypt is both the backdrop and the main source of Atteberry's material, which he uses to demonstrate the lessons he wishes to teach. Each chapter contains a mix of biblical scriptures along with his experiences as a pastor/counselor. His biblical discussions were much more helpful to me than his personal experience stories.

One of the important things this book drove home in my mind, is that a lifetime walk with God is a guaranteed certainty that the journey will be on a route no one would ever deliberately choose. Be careful what you ask for.....you just may get it!

On the other hand, it is an irritating turn-off that Atteberry uses the "Devil's gonna get you" mentality throughout his book. Living in fear of Satan is not a basis for righteous living. It is more important to live a life motivated by the love of God.

After reading this book, I knew I must pass it on to others in the Body of Christ who have been deeply wounded and to recommend it to others. From wounds inflicted by unwanted divorce; a child in prison; disappointment in how life has brought sorrow; wherever the path of life took them and they never meant to go -- without exception, each person I passed this book on to has these words "Praise God for Mark Atteberry and this book!" Some have even stated that if this book had been in their hands earlier, they would have been saved some of the anguish they went through.

I purchased this book for myself and subsequently for two others who had an incurable disease. It is Bible based, uplifting and a rewarding read. I will read it again and again!

I have used this book to assist my church ministry in divorce care and in my own walk down the road. It is sound from a biblical perspective and filled with common sense solutions. If you find yourself lost, wandering in the wilderness, grab thus survival guide. It works.

I was so impressed with this book that I went online and bought nine copies to give to friends and family. It is appropriate for anyone dealing with loss. Loss of a spouse, a child or dealing with divorce. I read it in one day. I started on a Saturday morning and could not put it down til late that evening. This is a great book to help deal with pain in life.

This is the cookbook that started it all and the book by which all other Jewish cookbooks aspire. It is homey and the recipes contained in its pages are sure to please your old-world longings or handed-down memories. Be forewarned that none of the original recipes are low-cal, low-fat anything and if you indulge, you can almost hear your arteries slamming shut. But just one taste of a light, fluffy matzo-ball . . . let me tell you, it's a machiah!

How happy I am to see "The Art of Jewish Cooking" still available to buy, although used, as my aged copy is well overdue for a replacement. The faded brown pages, now coverless and missing an index, still sport a spine, which notes the quaint price of 60¢. The dishes taste the same as those that my respective Romanian and Ukrainian grandmothers carried across the ocean in the early 1900s. I feel as if my grandmothers are in the kitchen with me as Jennie Grossinger has compiled their easy-to-follow delicious recipes augmented by typical menus and informative descriptions of the Jewish holidays. This modest book competes favorably with its glossy, richly photographed, modern cousins for it preserves the nostalgic flavors that are the essence of the European Jewish cuisine.

I have been using this cookbook for close to 30 years, and have worn out several paperback editions, so I finally got a hardcover!!!!!!!!!!I use this cook book the most of all my Jewish cookbooks because it's just like my grandmother's and my mother's cooking. The recipes are easy and very traditional, and can be adapted to low fat methods. I recommend this cookbook very highly, and I think it should be reprinted and made more widely available.

When I was away at college, I continually called my grandmother about recipes. One day, a large envelope came from her and this book dropped out.

I have many Jewish cookbooks and all are pretty good but I always go back to this book for food like my great-grandmother and my grandma made. Jennie Grossinger was the brains behind the kitchen at Grossinger's in The Catskill Mountains of New York.

The recipes are well-written, easy to understand and delicious everyone.

                                            Book Description

Here is a close-up look at the sea coral patterns, elegantly embossed leaves and flowers, and oddly shaped handles that characterized pre-1900 china production by the Prussian firm Reinhold Schlegelmilch. This striking and unusual china, most often appreciated for its unusual mold work, is systematically and thoroughly illustrated with over 500 color photographs. Picture frames, manicure sets, and clocks as well as tableware exemplify the extraordinary range of objects made from 1893-1900. The introduction of these items to the American consumer is confirmed by illustrations of mold patterns from catalogs of American wholesale firms in a scholarly exploration of the evolution of R.S. Prussia china and the wholesale distribution system utilized in America by the firm. Present-day values are provided in the captions based on recent sales and specialized dealer prices.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for RSP Collectors.......2002-12-27

The Marples are fabulous researchers and in this book developed a way to identify many pieces of early RSP by keeping a data base of decors and molds and cross referencing them with known and marked pieces.

A Great RSP collection is not complete without some of these early pieces!

5 out of 5 stars This is the definitive Book on this subject!.......2002-12-13

The Marples have done wonderful research in this catagory of collectible porcelain. They established a data base matching decors and molds to document and identify previously unidentifyed pieces. This book shows pieces from the "Early Years" of the Rheinhold Schlegelmilch Firm. While these are not as high priced or elaborate as the later pieces, they are treasures in themselves. This is a well researched and written book...a must for the R.S. Prussia Collector who wants a well rounded collection.

                                                  Book Description

This is a 14th-century biography of the famous Persian mystic poet and `Knower of God', Jalāl al-Dīn-e Rūmī, in the form of a large compendium of Sufi-style teaching stories. It was commissioned by a grandson about fifty years after Rūmī's death. The author-compiler, Aflākī, includes chapters on Bahā'-e Valad (Rūmī's father), Shams al-Dīn-e Tabrīzī (Rūmī's great love), Solṭān Valad and Amīr `Āref (Rūmī's son and grandson), and other transmitters of the spiritual Heritage of the Mowlavī dervish order. The protagonists are portrayed as performing miracles and confronting critics and rivals. Circumstantial detail abounds, thus providing one of our few windows onto social and political life during the Saljūq and Mongol period in Asia Minor. The translation has an extensive index of persons and concepts to assist readers and students.

                                                    Book Description

Yorkshire-born Ken Annakin was one of the greatest international film directors. The last of the English directors to make it in the international arena (others included Hitchcock and Lean), this autobiography traces Annakin's career from his early British films through to Hollywood. He has directed, written and produced over 50 feature films in Africa, India, Malaysia, Scandinavia, China, Europe and the United States. His films include: Swiss Family Robinson, The Longest Day, Battle of The Bulge, and Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines. His autobiography includes personal and revealing insights into many film personalities including: Walt Disney, Claudette Colbert, Edward G. Robinson, Peter Sellers, Charlton Heston and Raquel Welch. Ken Annakin's book is forthright and pulls no punches; it will soon become a classic among director's autobiographies. Detailing his own frustrations with sex-mad producers, drug-addicted actors, and politics which sabotaged multi-million dollar fims, Ken Annakin describes a career of dizzying highs and bleak lows. This master of "family entertainment" also sounds a clarion call for a return to motion pictures which are fun for the whole family. So You Wanna Be A Director? is an entertaining and witty travelogue, as well as an important document of film history.

Ken Annakin, one of fildom's greatest international directors, has written an autobiography every bit as entertaining as it is informative. His globetrotting film adventures gives "So You Wanna Be a Director?" the kind of page-turning narrative thrust of a mystery novel while, at the same time, providing astute analysis of the world cinema past and present. Annakin learned his craft well, a protege of Sir Carol Reed who launched his career with the hugely successful Hugget series, family entertainment resulting in major box office on both sides of the Atlantic. Annakin later became a premier filmmaker for Walt Disney and Daryl Zanuck. His Disney family classic, "The Swiss family Robinson," filmed entirely on the island of Tobago, remains one of the top grossers in world film history. His 1957 classic, "Across the Bridge," was one of the most intriguing film noir spellbinders ever made and helped propel into high gear the career of its star, Rod Steiger. Annakin's "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" was the most inventive satire ever filmed about the early days of aviation, earning him an Oscar nomination for "Best Original Screenplay" along with co-writer Jack Davies. Annakin sketches enduring portraits of Sir Carol Reed, Walt Disney, Daryl F. Zanuck, Rod Steiger, Peter Ustinov, Raquel Welch, Glynis Johns, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, and many others. For cinema lovers this is a "must read."
