Books are great..........2006-11-21
I have all the parts (Fellowship of the ring, Return of the King & The Two Towers). I have loved the audiobooks.
I only have 1 problem with the audiobooks and that is when I converted the discs so I could listen to them on my ipod, the names of each track varied.
On some it ists the name of teh chapter and followed by a number(part of the chapter, others it names the book and the track number without the chapter title name, and on others it says the track number...
They should have been consistent with the track names.
Lord of the Rings for car trips?.......2006-11-19
It's hard to add more than other reviewers have done. Most of the comments are right-on, but I think it's nice for a potential buyer to hear a lot of people voicing their opinions. This is a long set but perfect for a devoted fan. I love listening to it while doing other things or in the car on the way to work, probably also for an airplane. Rob Inglis did a great job, and while a few of the female voices are a bit odd, you soon forget about such things when you get wrapped up in the story.
He adds the right emphasis to the right parts and I think his voice is well-suited to this work. For hardcore LotR fans, it's hard to find something that meets our high expectations as this is a simply amazing work of art that will last for years - it's hard to find a voice that meets every (somewhat unreal, I think) expectation. But Rob Inglis comes extremely close.
It's a Good buy.......2006-06-03
It is a nice audio book. It does have it's flaws though.
1. It does not offer maps or any drawings. I have searched online for some, but only find blurry copies. Considering the maps and drawings are held so highly in admiration... it kinda sucks not to have them
2. the acting of the narrator is not the greatest. There were parts when the book notes "he yells" and the narrator speaks in a calm and clear character voice. It's kind of funny sometimes.
3. many of the narrator's "attempted" character voices sound alike. All the elf kind sound the same, even the women sound like males. All the hobbits pretty much sound the same, except Sam who has this manly deep voice, which often sounds like Aragon. Often the narrator accidentally mergers one character voice into another by accident. So a hobbit will be speaking then all the sudden he sounds like Aragon or Gandolf.
But outside of that the audio book is great. These "problems" are small. Since the un-abridged reading offers the names of who is talking and their emotions that go along with it, you can make out the story just fine. It just takes a little more imagination and you can alter their voices in your head to sound like what you want to hear. I would highly reccomend it, that is until someone figures out they can get a better actor or has the mind to hire multiple actors to fulfill the part.
There is nothing funnier than hearing a deep manly voice trying to immitate a woman singing
Brilliant, and well worth the money!.......2006-04-15
I am not a "Total Ringophile", like some out there, but I have read the books three times and loved them. I lashed out and purchased this 46 CD set as I spend a lot of time on the commute to work. It is brilliant! Each CD has approx 15 "tracks" on it so that if you miss a bit as your mind wanders (as it does in the car..) you can just bounce back one track and hear that bit again, no problems. Rob Inglis does a great job, no question. It has added a new dimension to my experince of Tolkien's masterpiece, and I highly recommend it to all. BRILLIANT !
Ingles does a fantastic job.......2005-11-26
I did not realize what a wonderful job that Ingles had done in this reading until I began listening to other audio books. Ingles manages to give each character a distinct voice and as you proceed, you recognize immediately who it is that is speaking.
After many years, Tolkien's work stands alone as the only sci-fi/fantasy story that puts the subtlety of language and culture equal to, if not above, the drama. Ingles interesting voices and care with the language of Tolkien make this a most worthy represenation of the timeless classic.

Book Description
It's been quite a week for Joe Grey. First the large, powerful feline discovers that, through some strange, inexplicable phenomenon, he now has the ability to understand human language. Then he discovers he can speak it as well! It's a nightmare for a cat who'd prefer to sleep the day away carefree, but Joe can handle it. That is, until he has the misfortune to witness a murder in the alley behind Jolly's Deli -- and worse, to be seen witnessing it. With all of his nine lives suddenly at risk, Joe's got no choice but to get to the bottom of the heinous crime -- because his mouse-hunting days are over for good unless he can help bring a killer to justice.

Cat On the Edge.......2007-07-08
As an animal lover - - I really enjoyed the idea behind Joe Gray the cat.
Loved it.......2006-02-26
I am in the process of reading all of the Joe Grey mysteries.
If you like cats and/or mysteries you will like these. I actually read the last in the series first and liked it so well I had to have the rest. If you do read them be sure to also read The Catswold Portal too.
WELCOME TO THE MYSTICAL WORLD OF CATS.......2005-10-31
****-1/2 Stars
I only recently learned of this cat series, having become slightly disenchanted with one other feline series I'd been reading. First off, it's always a good idea to read a series in order rather than coming in once the characters have been introduced & situations explained. In Cat on the Edge, Joe Grey, the gray & white Tom, who had been rescued from certain death by animal-loving bachelor, Clyde, discovers powers beyond the normal cat. The book opens with Joe witnessing a murder committed one night in an alley in a California seaside town. For some reason the murderer chases him, trying to kill him. After a couple more incidents, Joe decides that it would be best to leave home in order to protect Clyde & the other dogs & cats that live there. While he's fending for himself, he meets Dulcie & discovers that she too has the same powers that he has. Dulcie has also seen the murder & is running from the murderer. The wife of one of the accomplices has the ability to turn herself into a cat & back again. If all this sounds rather bazaar in the telling, Murphy manages to pull it off very well with her fluid writing & attention to detail. (I could have done without the detailed references to the eating of birds & mice however.) I was reminded somewhat of Watership Down & the portrayal from the rabbits point of view. I love the scene where Joe meets Dulcie & discovers that she can talk & understand. It is just so poignant.
The book is told almost entirely from the cat's point of view, though Clyde & Dulcie's "mom" (Clyde's friend) have their turn. It is strictly a "what if..." kind of story that pulls you into the mystical world of cats & we know who the murderer is from the start. The story centers on how Joe & Dulcie get the humans to discover what is going on. I must admit, since reading this book, I look at my five cats a bit differently, half expecting one of them to morph into a human or phone me in the middle of the night. I definitely enjoyed this book enough to continue on with the next.
in suspence.......2004-01-15
You wouldn't believe that cats talked, thought, or had feelings like humans. Joe grey has that, and now he's solving a murder mystery in one of the most normal towns you would ever have heard of; never any big problems, just the mischeif of all the neighborhood cats. Joe was the only witness, he thought, to the murder, and the person who did it is after him because he knows Joe's secret. Hiding in the shadows was Dulcie. The second of the three witnesses, whom also walked on four feet with the mysterious talent. Dulcie and Joe both discover they are one of the same, and work together to find the victims killer.
This movie was a very suspesful and some parts breath holding. I highely recommend it to people who love murder mysteries. Even if you aren't much for animal stories, this is one to at least pick up. It changes your perception on animals and opens your mind to a whole new different world of thoughts. The book leaves you wanting more.
If You Like Rita Mae Brown..........2003-08-08
then you can't afford not to sample the Joe Grey mysteries, of which this is the first. Joe, a tough, stump-tailed tomcat, lives in the arty little California coastal village of Molena Point with Clyde Damen, who repairs and restores high-end and antique cars for a living, and Clyde's two dogs and three other cats. One day, to his astonishment, Joe discovers that he has inexplicably developed the ability to understand, speak, and read human speech. On top of this shock comes another: he witnesses a murder in the alleyway behind a local deli. And the killer seems to realize that Joe could be a threat to him, since the very next morning he tries to break into Clyde's house. Forced to go on the run, Joe teams up with Dulcie, a charming little brindle female belonging to retired parole officer Wilma Getz, who is a long-time friend of Clyde's; Dulcie too has just realized that she shares Joe's talent. Trying to preserve their own lives, they realize, requires that they help the police nail the murderer--which, in turn, draws them into a stolen-car ring and a counterfeiting scheme. The twists and turns of the plot, while complex, are so well drawn that the story flows easily from point to point, and the cats, apart from their fantastic abilities, are recognizably felines who behave just as any housecat might, yet at the same time are distinct and well-delineated characters. The fact that Joe and Dulcie have to do their maneuvering behind the scenes--only their own people, and one very special human, are allowed to learn about their new talents--adds a fresh angle to the so-often-repeated "amateur detective" motif. I've gone on to read the second book in the series and it maintains, if not exceeds, the quality of the first. Lovers of cats, mystery, and fantasy are sure to find this book a thorough delight. (Note: Murphy is also the YA fantasy novelist Sylvia Engdahl.)

The late master's tales remain required reading........2001-10-16
Despite being famous more for a single novel (Psycho) than his body of work, Robert Bloch's greatest contributions to genre literature may arguably be in the short story format. Whether writing for the pulps or the slick professional magazines, Bloch could be counted on delivering a unique and addictive blend of twisted shock and sarcastic black humor. Each of these 'Complete Stories of' volumes are pretty much required in any genre fan's library. Highly recommended.
Robert Bloch's writing is sharp, sleek, and suspenseful........1998-12-11
Robert Bloch is a master storyteller. Every story that I've encountered by him has drawn me in. His writing is clever and suspenseful. If you haven't read his writing, you are missing a treat. If you've only read "Psycho," there's much more dimension to this writer than that masterpiece.
A wide spectrum of Bloch's works.......1996-11-15
This anthology is a fairly diverse collection of short stories written by Robert Bloch (author of "Psycho"). A few stories into the book, and you will understand why Bloch has been called the king of the shock endings. You will soon find yourself attempting to guess how Bloch will finish off the tale you are reading, and you will be right about seventy-five percent of the time. Does this harm the stories themselves? In a way, much as it would if you were reading a book entitled "100 Stories In Which The Hero Turns Out To Be A Vampire."
Still, several stories do manage to chill despite this failing, and they are superb examples of Bloch performing in top form.

"Cohen and Soyer have done a masterful job of collecting and translating these gripping immigrant narratives. A must read for anyone interested in immigration, American history, or the Jewish experience in America."

"This unique volumen introduces readers to the complex world of Yiddish-speaking immigrants while at the same time elucidating important themes and topics of interest to those in immigration studies, ethnic studies, labor history, and literary studies."

"A treasure trove of Yiddish autobiographical gems available for the first time in English. These heartfelt and moving narratives reveal the rich, complex and multi-textured experience of the East European Jewish immigrant milieu. The masterful translations rendered by Cohen and Soyer capture the lyric, sophisticated and often times profound dimensions of the writers' contributions. To this considerable achievement, Cohen and Soyer add a valuable introductory essay and detailed notes that make the book accessible to students, researchers and thoughtful readers alike. This volume plugs a significant gap in the field of modern Jewish studies and belongs in every library collection, where it will update and complement classics like A Bintel Brief and World of Our Fathers."Mark A. Raider, author of American Jewish Women and the Zionist Enterpriseand The Plough Woman: Records of the Pioneer Women of Palestine
In 1942, YIVO held a contest for the best autobiography by a Jewish immigrant on the theme "Why I Left the Old Country and What I Have Accomplished in America," Chosen from over two hundred entries, and translated from Yiddish, the nine life stories in
My Future Is in America provide a compelling portrait of American Jewish life in the immigrant generation at the turn of the twentieth century.
The writers arrived in America in every decade from the 1890s to the 1920s. They include manual workers, shopkeepers, housewives, communal activists, and professionals who came from all parts of Eastern Europe and ushered in a new era in American Jewish history. In their own words, the immigrant writers convey the complexities of the transition between the Old and New Worlds.
An Introduction places the writings in historical and literary context, and annotations explain historical and cultural allusions made by the writers. This unique volume introduces readers to the complex world of Yiddish-speaking immigrants while at the same time elucidating important themes and topics of interest to those in immigration studies, ethnic studies, labor history, and literary studies.

Customer Reviews:
Descriptive and diverse.......2007-02-26
I was assigned this book for a Jewish History class at my university, and so far I'm really enjoying it. We read one of the autobiographies each week, and I feel that Cohen has done an excellent job of bringing together stories from different backgrounds and different experiences, and even has a married couple each tell their stories in their own autobiographies.
I'll be honest; I was expecting it to be boring - but am very pleasantly surprised to find that it's not!
Immediate, poignant and fills gaps in my knowledge very nicely.......2006-12-03
The older brother of Minnie Goldstein, who wrote the first of the autobiographies that appear in the book, is my great-grandfather and what seems to have been passed down through the generations is a somewhat sanitised version of the truth ... I really had no idea about their dreadful poverty, or the fact that a contributing factor to Hershl Malinberg's emigration from Warsaw to the U.S. was being cheated in business by his own mother-in-law. Of course, the story has particular resonance for her own kith and kin, but it contains so much vivid detail, and is told so well, that I would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent primary source.......2006-08-25
"My Future Is In America" contains excellent primary source material for the student of Jewish immigration to this country and immigration history in general. The individual essays are captivating and very readable, providing a wealth of information about the immigrant experience, not only after arrival in America, but also about life in Europe pre-immigration. This book should be considered as reading in American Studies curricula.
RIVETING AND INFORMATIVE.......2006-02-10
I just finished reading this book. This is not only for Jewish people but other religions as well. It's a part of our history and I found it very enjoyable and informative. A must read.
I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.......2006-01-21
As a first generation American, I always wanted to know how and why my parents came to America... they passed away before imparting this information.... this book fills in all the gaps, in a humorous and interesting way. I could not put this book down, and reread it... Totally enjoyable!!!! 5 stars

More Harm Than Good.......2004-05-10
Virtually everything in the book is innacurate. There are literally hundreds of factual errors. A good example would be the 23 line essay on Wendell August Forge that has 14 errors of fact in those 23 lines. Shame on Grist!! Shame on Collector Books for having published it ! ! Anyone who has paid more than $1 for it has been significantly cheated.
William Freeman
Midwest Collector.......2001-05-31
I received this book as a gift. I have some hammered aluminum and thought this book would be useful to help me learn more. I was wrong, indeed! This book has decent pictures and that is all. There is absolutely no timeline for markings to help someone establish when a piece was made. There is no regard to what is 'rare'. There is also no information given on what the numbering system for certain makers means. How many types of things did Rodney Kent make, for example. I have found this book of little help with my collection.
I stand corrected on my early review........1999-05-14
With the advantage of hindsight and experience, I have to withdraw my earlier favorable comments. I agree with the negative comments of other reviewers. The one that stated in effect that you are in trouble if you look beyond the pictures is probably right on target. Mr. Grist should significantly upgrade his research, quality of illustrations of marks, provide time frames for marks, get to know "Rodney Kent" better and update his prices. A section on manufacturing methods to distinguish between hand hammered and other would be useful.
Don't bother buying it!.......1999-02-02
I have been collecting hammered aluminum for many years and can honestly say that this is the worst book that I have ever seen on the subject. It is riddled with inaccuracies of fact and misrepresentations. I could write a book on the inaccuracies found in this book. If you do anything more than look at the pictures, you will likely not learn much. His research techniques were useless at best. This book is full of fairy tales!
Highly recommended for the novice collector........1999-01-02
This book has come under much criticism from expert, professional, and seasoned collectors. Much of this criticism is justified from their point of view. However, for the novice or one just getting started collecting hammered aluminum it is a valuable tool. I am novice collector who can't afford to maintain a large research library on hammered aluminum. I find this book a valuable aid when shopping for aluminum. The Introduction and maker's marks are an asset. I only wish that some dates or periods of time could have been listed under the marks. Keep in mind that the values listed in the book are relative. At this point the values are highly understated. If you can find quality pieces at or beldow the values stated in this book, you found a bargain!
