Book Description
Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain’s defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons.
When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future–and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.
Customer Reviews:
great story, ok execution.......2007-09-25
I read a lot of reviews before I bought HIS MAJESTY'S DRAGON and almost all of them got around to making the same two points: the story is fantastic, the writing is fairly flat. Lo and behold, now that I have read the book I have to say that all those reviews were on-target. It is totally delightful to read about dragons in the Napoleonic Wars, and bizarrely fitting: of course the same people that charge into battle on horses, or frail wooden ships, would be at home on flying beasts. The details are wonderfully worked out, the blend of historical research and imagination is hard to read without real relish.
Novik maintains a steady level of tension throughout the book. The story doesn't really build to a climax and then resolve; but there are no dull passages, and no saggy middle. Her characters are a little wooden and Laurence, in particular, is so painfully noble that even if he were more vividly drawn he would still be fairly one-dimensional.
I might read more of this series, and I'm sure that I'd enjoy it. But I can't imagine feeling very passionate about it, given what I know of the first installment.
Well-imagined combination of history, fantasy, and manners.......2007-09-23
I was a little hesitant about the Novik novels at first, never having been a dragon fiction fan and not being able to recall what was the last grown-up fantasy novel I read, unless you count "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" as fantasy fiction. Still, I knew that Novik was partly inspired by the works of Patrick O'Brian and Jane Austen, weighty names that lent some worth to her reputation. By the middle of the first novel, the well wrought combination of dragons, Napoleonic wars, and Regency propriety sealed Novik's reputation for me. And it's a good one.
The best thing about the series is the friendship between a Jack-Aubrey-styled hero, Will Laurence, and the Chinese-by-nature and British-by-nurture Imperial dragon, Temeraire, named for a French ship captured by the English at the Battle of Lagos in 1759. (Temeraire's egg was taken from a French ship that Laurence had won.) I was completely won over by Temeraire, who is curious, polite, brave, eager for knowledge and action, and harbors revolutionary inclinations. He and Will make a brilliant team as they endure danger and triumph during their battles against the French.
A fine beginning........2007-09-17
Naomi Novik, His Majesty's Dragon (Del Rey, 2006)
It took me almost a year after I first started hearing about Naomi Novik's Temeraire Trilogy to actually get round to reading the first book in the series, and I regret that. This is some fine stuff right here. Novik has reimagined the world as it was in Napoleon's time, creating an alternate universe where only one thing is changed: the existence of dragons. This is an entry in the martial-fantasy subgenre, where the emphasis is off swords and sorcery and is more on military tactics and the like (viz. Elizabeth Moon's The Deed of Paksenarrion or Steven Erikson's Malazan books), but Novik goes one deeper, spending a good deal of time examining the mores and customs of the time, and figuring out how the existence of dragons might affect those (as well as the obvious effect on the military). The result is a quite stunning period piece. Oddly, though, what it most reminds me of is Joan Aiken's The Stolen Lake, but without Aiken's sense of whimsy.
Temeraire is a dragon, still unhatched when the book begins. Navy captain Will Laurence gets the egg as part of the bounty after capturing a French warship, and after the dragon hatches, it befriends Laurence, and the two of them set off on a grand adventure in the Napoleonic wars.
The book's been called by more than one reviewer "Patrick O'Brian with dragons." I, embarrassingly, have not yet read O'Brien, but if he's this much fun, I'll start as soon as I can. Novik's martial writing is on a par with Erikson's, if not on the same epic plateau, while her examination of customs and mores has a nice subtlety to it. A fine book, this, and I'm much looking forward to the rest of the series. ****
BAD.......2007-09-17
According to the review, all this book is is a copy of Eragon with a little British theme thrown in. Even the staling of the egg mirrors Eragon. I would never buy this book, ever. Anybody who is reading this, definitly spend the extra $10.00 for Eragon. It is way better.
What a page-turner!.......2007-08-31
This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in the past five years. I loved how Will Laurence changed in a wholly believable manner from the prototypical stiff, formal Regency hero into a core member of Britain's new Aerial Force. I loved how the dragon Temeraire develops from an infant, albeit a sentient infant with language, to an adult. I loved the culture of the Aerial Corps, and how it differed so intensely from the rest of society (just as the precursor of the RAF did from the rest of the British military).
I'm not even fond of dragon stories, fantasies, or Regency fiction, but this was superb! I haven't had that much fun reading in a very long time!

Enjoyed this Book.......2007-09-24
I really liked this book. However, if you would rather read actual experiences, try Stories of Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel
Not what I expected.......2007-01-10
The blip about this book sounded promising, so I bought it for my best friend. I was a little taken aback by the author's point-of-view. Not a very good read...
A Fabulous book!.......2004-09-23
This book is full of wonderful exercises you can do yourself to help you discover more about your past lives and who you are as a spiritual being. You'll discover how to get answers in your dreams to situations you encounter in daily life. You'll also learn more about karma and how to go about visiting the inner worlds. I highly recommend this book!
This Book is Food for Soul.......2004-02-01
Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel by Harold Klemp is a great book but it isn't for everyone. Klemp has never catered to the slothful but to those who are willing to keep a middle of the night dream journal, and try his ideas about soul travel with an open mind and joyous heart. For myself, I've been keeping the dream journal and trying the soul travel exercises and I am happy with my decision to buy this book. I've been buying and reading his books for years and I've always felt satisfied and gently pushed to go further in life both professionally and spiritually. What most people may not know is that these techniques work really well at work and I think they would work for you, if you put the effort into them.
Past and Present Lies, Fantasy, and Arrogance.......2004-01-21
This book is mainly filler. If you have ever read any other book by this author (Harold Klemp) you need not purchase this book. Many stories are even indicated as coming from other Eckankar books. There is also a lot dogma which is designed to influence the reader through various means of conscious and unconscious methods such as: repitition, dreams, substitution, and audio & visual suggestion and self-hyptnosis. Early on the concept of the "Mahanta" is presented but is not fully explained. The Mahanta is greater than Jesus! The Mahanta is greater than God! Harold Klemp's titles are: Mahanta, the Living Eck Master, the Outer Master, the Inner Master, the Dream Master, and the Load of Hosts (to name just a few). In Eckankar all other religions are looked down upon and whose "GOD" is no higher than the 4th Plane or heaven. The Mahantaship begins on the 14th Plane! Even High Initiates in Eckankar begin at the 5th Plane which is higher than the "GOD" of all of the religions on earth or anywhere! However, Eckankar will falsely use the word "God" when talking to the "public" to mislead, fit in, and not scare off any potential members. Basically, the book is intended to continue the false creation of Paul Twitchell by making people dependent on someone (the Mahanta) other than their own Higher Self, or God-Soul. Self-Mastery is never a possibility although the author mentions spiritual freedom as a goal for each Soul. It is like a carrot that is dangled in fron of the seeker, but is always out of reach. This book is a big disappointment!
Customer Reviews:
A Dishonest View of a New Age Cult.......2004-04-14
On the surface this seems like a very good little book that has a lot of info on Eckankar, and a new perspective on the spiritual purpose of life. There are many truths presented in this book, but there is also an underlying dishonesty. This dishonesty is why I gave the book a one star rating... sorry. What is NOT mentioned is that the "Mahanta" (the Inner Master who is also the Outer Master, i.e. Harold Klemp) is the main focus of this new religion. Prior to Klemp taking over, in 1981, Eckankar was considered a "Spiritual Path." Now, Eckankar has guidelines and rules which are written and "suggested" that all members follow or else. The "else" can be a demotion of initiations, sanctions on duties, or a shunning by other members. The Mahanta demands that the Eckist (member) have total surrender to him, and absolute reliance on him for guidance and protection of all things, in all situations. This means that mental attention is to be placed on the Mahanta (Klemp), and on his words and image, at all times and even during sleep so that one "dreams" of the Mahanta as well. Eventually, the member (chela/student) becomes completely dependent and attached to the Mahanta which is the real goal prescribed through the Eck (Eckankar) teachings. Anything else is just secondary to this main goal. One (Soul) is also told that this reliance will continue throughout all initiations regardless of how many one receives. By the way... Eckankar sees the "God" of all religions as being or residing on the 2nd (Astral) Plane/heaven or on the 4th (Mental) Plane/heaven. Therefore, a High Initiate (5th Plane or higher) is higher in consciousness than the "God" the rest of the world worships (let alone the prophets or saviors)! Also, on the surface, there appears to be a loving respect for others by Eckists (members) and by their leader (Klemp), but this is not really the case. Members of Eckankar really see themselves in a exclusive club and above others spiritually and in consciousness. However, they (Eckists) are encouraged to share their teachings through "coin" and through some form of "service" which includes being a Vahana (missionary) or an Arahata (teacher). As I said before, these facts are just some of the more important things that are not mentioned in this easy to read little book.
Life changing! This book transformed my life!.......1997-04-12
Such a little book, so much wisdom, truth, and love! This book is one of those rare books that transforms lives! Eckankar's approach to spirituality is so refreshing and natural! Absolutely the best. No matter what religion or path you are on, or even if you aren't particularly searching for anything, I recommend this little book! Stunning, brilliant, and amazing

Ashes to Ashes: America's Hundred-Year Cigarette War, the Public Health, and the Unabashed Triumph of Philip Morris
ASIN: 0887409725 |
Book Description
Since 1789, when the first tobacco advertisement appeared, tobacco manufacturers have been pioneers of advertising and marketing, revolutionizing the American way of doing business in the process. The folksy, familiar and innocent-looking images portrayed in tobacco advertising were part of the new wave of product promotion - tin tags, cigar and tobacco labels, insert cards (including the first baseball cards) - that helped transform America into a nation of smokers by 1900. With illustrations of antique artifacts, old photographs and contemporary advertising, the reader is taken through the rapid growth of the tobacco industry following the Civil War, and shown a wide-range of promotional ploys and gimmickry that evolved in this century: tobacco tins, cigarette pack art, and outdoor advertising. Other advertising objects include lapel buttons, pocket mirrors, postcards, watch fobs, pocketknives, envelope stickers and more. All are lavishly illustrated, many in full color, and an informative value guide is included.

There's a tool and equipment list, material buying suggestions, a history of each stitch, and an illustrated glossary. The stitches are shown both in diagrams and within finished pieces. While the legacy of ancient embroidery styles is honored, the book also features a survey of the most exciting new experimental techniques being used today, which can produce unusual and impressive results.

Book Description
The essays in this volume explore women's working and family lives in contemporary East and Southeast Asia, focusing on conflict between family and work roles, structural obstacles in the workplace, and the impact of state policies on women's well-being. It also discusses strategies that women employ in response to structural contraints provided in the context. This volume covers a particularly wide range of societies, some of which were rarely studied, in contemporary Asia. By comparing these ten Asian economies that are at different stages of economic development, the volume demonstrates the way in which gender relations transform in the course of development. The book is particularly important for sociologists and anthropologists who are interested in gender and economic development.
