"Where I come from, disguise is the only truth and desire the only true measure of time," the riddling, feisty narrator of The Ventriloquist's Tale asserts. Pauline Melville explores the effects of both of these in her dark--and often deeply funny--narrative of forbidden love and the clash of cultures. Set in the Guyanese capitol of Georgetown and on its distant savannahs, Melville's first novel turns on the tragic absurdities of colonialism, capitalism, and fanaticism, not to mention a pair of very illicit relationships. In the 1920s, two mixed-race siblings find it surprisingly easy to be together and unsuspected:
Just like the brown and black patterns in the artwork on the woven baskets and sifters and matapees, where it is not always possible to tell foreground from background and the animal symbols are disguised by being embedded in a geometrical whole, Beatrice and Danny were miraculously concealed by their home setting.
In the present-day strand, Chofy McKinnon, Danny's nephew, has an intense and tragic affair with Rosa Mendelson, an English academic looking into Evelyn Waugh's journey to Guyana in the 1930s. Waugh, possessed of "a pushed-up face and little pebble eyes," had stayed with the McKinnons, and forced Danny in particular to listen to hour after hour of Dombey and Son--a brilliant spin on Waugh's reportage from the Amazonias, not to mention his novel A Handful of Dust. Melville offers up an acute vision on Guyana's colonial past and present, and on the pull between nature and culture, superstition versus rationalism, blindness and sight. She knows that there is no easy middle ground, perhaps no middle ground at all. "You say we have to mix," Chofy's cousin cries. "What to do? We're destroyed if we mix. And we're destroyed if we don't." Readers will be hard-pressed to descry any moral in the astonishing Ventriloquist's Tale (though order and institutions aren't held in high esteem). As for forbidden love--it definitely doesn't conquer all, but its memory is bliss in Beatrice's later, respectable years: "She barely had time to remember that other love which had flowed always under the grind of daily life; a sweet underground river that sometimes broke through to the surface and made its own music, but mainly stayed hidden, so that she only carried the echoes of its song." --Kerry Fried
Book Description
Pauline Melville conjures up vivid pictures both of savanna and forest and of city life in South America where love is often trumped by disaster. Unforgettable characters illuminate theme and plot: Sonny, the strange, beautiful and isolate son of Beatrice and Danny, the brother and sister who have a passionate affair at the time of the solar eclipse in 1919; Father Napier, the sandy-haired evangelist whom the Indians perceive as a giant grasshopper; Chofy McKinnon the modern Indian, torn between savanna life and urban future. This is a novel that embraces nearly a century, large in scope but intimate as a whisper, where laughter is never far from the scene of tragedy; a parable of miscegenation and racial elusiveness, of nature defying culture, magic confronting rationalism and of the eternally rebellious nature of love.

Bargain Bin Price Was Money Wasted.......2006-01-29
This is a pretentious and obscene book. I picked it up in the bargain bin. I guess I was drawn by the name "Melville". It's been a few years since I read this and I've done a pretty good job of trying to put it out of my mind, so there may be a few inaccuracies, but I write the review to save you the trouble of having to try to forget the book yourself.
The story is a take off on a creation myth that reappears in various forms in many cultures, especially north and south native american ones, according to which sun and moon are brother and sister and are forever separated because of an act of incest (eclipse). The characters just repeat all this in modern life, so they can be seen as manifestations of divinities... incestuous mind you, but divinities nevertheless.
The ventriloquist is the narrator who is a kind of eccentric, "playful", half-insane godling (the brother?). I'm not sure if he's supposed to just appear crazy because his mind is so vastly greater than our puny ones or because he's really been driven mad by seperation from his love. His story-telling is supposed to actually be an act of creation though, so that the characters are his "puppets" if you will. This all smacks of Derrida's "arche-writing" and all that post-modern trash now that I think of it. I wonder if Ms. Melville could possibly have intended that.
The story (idyllic native life meets soul-destroying British colonialism) crosses a generation or three, and the incestuous native sister and her son are dominant characters, the story being told predominantly from their perspective. So we've got a male narrator and female protagonist with their male child. Shades of Hermes, Aphrodite, and Hermaphrodite here? Or perhaps Cupid and Psyche? Once again, I wonder if Ms. Melville could possibly have intended these parallels. But gods forbid that we should take a Eurocentric parallel as apt anyway! And besides, those are fascinating stories and this one is just disgusting.
So this book has it all... feminism, multiculturalism, paganism, etc., etc. Unfortunately, it has these in their most twisted and bankrupt forms and so only gives ammunition to their enemies. It doesn't help that the author's ingenious narrative method is supposed to give us a greater estimation of her intelligence and thereby her cultural-political views. All in all, words that come to mind are "smarmy", "sslf-satisfied", and "repugnant".
The author has one thing right though... and that's that the stories you tell, especially about your gods, are the stories you tell about yourself... about your vision of what you think you can be, about what you hope to be and what you think is worth doing, about your ideals. Heavens help the author of this book then!
This ranks right down there with a lot of greek myth. If you like the adultery, cannibalism, and child-rape in those stories you might find something of value here.
I want to be clear. I am not puritanical. I am not any narrow-minded moralist. I can appreciate all kinds of literature. I simply found this book offensive. I understand that sometimes a work of art is designed to be offensive, or ugly, or just to get a visceral reaction. I think however that when this is so it should, though ugly, have the ultimate purpose of awakening us to a greater appreciation of beauty, or at least to serve some cathartic function. This did none of that nor do I see how it could in any healthy person.
If I felt that this was a fair example of the future of literature I would despair of humanity. I'm more optimistic than that though.
The only good thing I could say about this book is that it did take someone with excellent story-telling skills to write. It's ashamed that those skills were wasted on trash like this.
Of all the reviews here, the only other one that's on target and captures what the book and author are really up to is the one dated July 23, 2002 by "a reader".
Evelyn Waugh, solar eclipses and forbidden love.......2005-12-04
Pauline Melville’s first novel is set in Guyana, the only English speaking country in South America, famous for its rum, gold, lush rainforest and rich folklore. From the garden city of Georgetown to the endless savannahs of the Rupununi, her colorful tale weaves its way from past to present, mixing illicit relationships of various sorts with religion, politics and Kanaima, the black magic of vengeance.
While some of the stories of incest, adultery, and the sinful urges of a Catholic priest may make some readers squirm, Melville’s storytelling weaves a magical web drawing it all together, and although some of the narrative is in Creolese (the Guyanese vernacular) it should be quite easy for non-Guyanese to follow along.
The central theme links the forbidden love between a brother and sister to ancient legends of the origin of solar eclipses, and most of the story takes place in the south of Guyana among the Amerindian villages there. The parts of the story set in modern Georgetown are not half as colorful, their purpose being to link past and present, add a bit of humor, and also provide a little more shock value.
Tying it all together is an academic researcher who comes to Guyana to trace the path of celebrated novelist Evelyn Waugh, but finds much more than she bargained for.
This is a provocative story, based on actual legends, set in a real geographical location, and for the most part the author is spot-on in her portrayal of the characters depicted.
Amanda Richards, December 4, 2005
Note: The little drawings found at the beginning of every chapter represent ancient Amerindian rock carvings, and are mostly stylized forms of animals. These drawings are widely used as inspiration for jewellery and craft designs.
A sharp, rich and fantastic story.......2005-08-16
Mrs Melville's original tale tells the story of the McKinnons who lived in the Rupununi district of the Guianas at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a fairly complex tale involving many protagonists and what is interesting is that the plot revolves around the Amerindian mythology of the brother-sister incest, in this case involving two characters called Beatrice and Danny McKinnon.
The myth concerns the eclipse which represents brother-and-sister incest in the form of a copulating sun and moon and it is widespread throughout the Americas, from the Bering Straight in the North to the southern parts of Brazil. People believe that a brother came secretly to his sister at nights. She enjoyed this but, not knowing who he was, painted his face in black with some genipap plant to identify him. In his shame, the brother rose to the sky and became the moon which explains why the moon has dark patches on its face. Other events are interesting in the novel: Father Napier's pathetic attempt at converting the Rupununi district to Christianity and his subsequent failure and descent into madness, the existence of Beatrice's son Sonny and his tragic disappearance and also Beatrice's threat uttered to her sister Wifreda during an eclipse to make her blind. An impressive first novel well worth reading.
Beautiful Mythology.......2005-01-19
With such delicate observations of human emotions and insight into conflicting desires it is hard not to be swept away by the narrative voice of Pauline Melville. She has with this story created the most intriguing and important work in post colonial literature to date.
Telling the story of an Amerindian family in Guyana trying to adapt to imperial culture it makes use of indian myths to follow the tradition of indian storytelling. These myths are interwoven with the unfolding of events that build up the tale itself, creating a link between magic and reality. Still, the author also makes use of realism in the portrait of the characters and their world where magic is stubbornly keeping its significance in every day life. The two powerful love stories, one a taboo, the other impossible, are both magic and real and told with a flow that is a joy to read. The realism also makes the characters and the journey they undertake, even when it takes extreme and unexpected turns, not only highly believable but in fact also convinces us that it is the only way possible for the characters to be and for the journey to go.
More than with any other character in any other novel I felt a strong kinship with Beatrice who has to separate herself from her indigenous past in a clash between two incompatible worlds. Her struggle is particularly moving as she finds that the colonial world feels unreal and that to succumb to a life set up by rules so different from her home and family would be a betrayal.
The stark contrast between self-sufficiency and self-containment of the indigineous Guyana and the self-effacement and alienation of the modern world makes the cultural conflicts that boils underneath all the more relevant. It speaks directly to us and makes us question the way in which we still colonize countries both by corporative and academical means and force them to lose their identity and way of life. It also makes us question our own way of life and opens up the possibility to learn from other cultures in order to preserve them in a world that spins ever faster into homogeneity.
The Morality Tale.......2002-09-12
In The Ventriloquist's Tale, Pauline Melville reconstructs the vibrant, explosive world of interior Guiana during early 20th Century - a world lost in a struggle between the stability of its past and the promise of the future. The Ventriloquist's Tale is an illustration of a world ravaged by European and American colonialism, marked by this confrontation of native and western cultures. Melville lures the reader into the minds of characters who find themselves caught between what they desire to be and the limitations imposed upon them by civilized society.
Melville offers an insightful testament to this cultural confrontation between the Amerindians and their European colonists. The European ideals of progress and innovation, embodied by Scotsman Alexander McKinnon, contrast sharply with the Amerindian worldview. The Amerindians believe that change is an unnecessary phenomenon: "...they laughed at the idea of progress, despised novelty and treated it with suspicion. Novelty, in fact, was dangerous. I meant that something was wrong with the order of things." (99)
European culture infiltrates Guiana through the mission of the Catholic Church, spearheaded by Father Napier, and Melville illustrates its detrimental effects on the Amerindian's ancient culture. Father Napier irrationally believes he will be able to convert the Amerindians, to persuade them to abandon their intricate mythology and their exotic way of life. The Amerindians are inseparable from their mystic stories about the sun, the moon, and the tree of life. Koko Lupi, the Amerindian healer, accuses Father Napier of force-feeding the Amerindians a "dead god on a stick" who will deprive the Amerindians of their passion for life and for the unknown (240). In fact, the European culture's stubborn willingness to repress their desires, to act against their passions, is exemplified by Father Napier's unconsummated sexual obsession with young Amerindian boys.
Melville does not allow European and American colonialism to thrive without grave consequence. The sheer devastation inflicted upon Guiana and its people by these intruders is epitomized by the death of eight-year old Bla-Bla. With exploitative zeal, Americans from Hawk Oil begin to "prospect" the Rupununi. Bla-Bla, the son of Chofy and Marietta, third generation McKinnons, accidentally sets off a dynamite explosion. Marietta's account of the scene is gut-wrenching: "And we found Bla-Bla by the river. Two fish still in the trap. Blood everywhere. The bones of his legs laid bare. Kaboura flies, sandflies and mosquitoes swarming all over him." (338)
The affair between Alexander McKinnon's two children, symbolized by an eclipse, seduces the reader, drawing him or her into Danny and Beatrice's forbidden world. Melville herself refrains from judging the two lovers and presents their incestuous affair as a fact, unclouded by moral bias. Her detachment from the moral issue challenges the reader to reexamine his or her attitudes towards and beliefs concerning incest. Throughout The Ventriloquist's Tale, disparate views towards incest appear. Incest is an embarrassing, taboo subject for the Europeanized Alexander McKinnon. Maba, the Amerindian mother of Danny and Beatrice reluctantly recognizes their affair: "I know it's not good, what Danny and Beatrice are doing, but it's not the worst thing in the world. It's happened before. It's just fate." (215) Father Napier abhors the incestuous act. He believes that Danny and Beatrice's actions should conform to his own religious and moral standards: "he thinks he can stand between the sun and the moon" (240).
Throughout The Ventriloquist's Tale Melville demonstrates the power that ideals of morality hold over us. Even human beings were once ruled by Nature, by their instincts, not socialized or indoctrinated by the institutions of civilized society. Time and time again Melville proves that Nature has no morality. Beatrice herself discloses that her affair with Danny "felt so natural that she could not believe that there was anything bad about it" (268). Melville's characters vacillate between trusting their instincts and upholding the moral absolutes of European culture. They struggle to cope with the atrocities they have experienced and the sacrifices they have made. Yet they remain, in the words of the ventriloquist, "unable to decide whether we should stick to ourselves or throw ourselves on the mercy of the wide world" (357).

We can hope for more.......2007-07-21
The Dragon DelaSangre series reached a great peak with this story. Here's hoping Alan F. Troop delivers more in this series.
The Best One Yet.......2006-10-12
Of the four books in the series, I feel that this one is the best. Troop manages to give it a mobster movie feel while maintaining the traditional fantasy edge. This series just keeps getting better. I certainly hope that Troop continues to write about our favorite dragon. I will certainly be there to plop down my money for any future books! This is one of the most orginal treatments of dragons I have ever encountered. Even the secondary characters are developed so strongly that you feel like you know them. A wonderful read.
Great Book.......2006-07-21
Yet again he does it, Peter beats the odds but yet at more then one point I wasn't sure. And yet again Troop also creates another great book.
A Host of Dragons review.......2006-03-09
Another great book by Alan Troop. I love reading his books about dragons.
A Host of Dragons.......2006-02-27
This is a good book. It really follows up were the last book left off. Eventhough it starts out slower than the Seadragon, it really gets going towards the middle of the book. Would have liked a little more interaction between Aric and Peter.

STARHAWK.......2006-12-19
Starhawk was a great book. This sci-fi novel is about a man named Hawk Hunter when the empire finds him on a desolate rock of a planet named Fools 6, he has no idea where he is from. He has no signs of trauma, amnesia or anything. Hunter, however, is a magnificent flyer. The men who find him enter him in a spaceship race on Earth. Hunter wins the race, and then sets off to find his identity.
I completely recommend this book. The story is so vivid and imaginative that even a non sci-fi fan would like it. Also, the plot undergoes many exciting twists during the course of the story as Hunter learns more of his past. This is a great book, and I definitely recommend it.
So-so writing, but decent plot.......2003-05-16
Fortunately, Mack Maloney knows how to spin an interesting story; that alone makes it worth reading. Frankly, however, when compared to other SF authors such as William Fortschen or David Weber, Mack Maloney does not even begin to compare; at times his writing is almost chidlesh. Furthermore, an SF author should at least have some semblence of realistic science; Mack Maloney's use of "extra-demensions" and so forth is more entertaining than believable, however. If one wishes to use extra dimensions in science fiction, that is fine; string theory, after all, proposes 11. Maloney, however, simply uses the concept of "extra-dimensions" as a vehicle to advance that plot so that he can have ships winking in and out of existence, etc.
Having given the negative side of this review, it's only fair that I give credit Maloney for a very interesting and enjoyable plot. It's original (well, sort of) and he manages to make the reader truly interested in his protagonist's fate. All in all, this makes up for his lack of talent (this might not be entirely fair; I haven't read anything other than this series). I can definitely recommended this series for others; just don't expect too much from his writing style.
New Series-Same Character.......2002-08-05
Starhawk uses the main character from another series of books by Mack Maloney, Hawk Hunter from Wingman. The Starhawk series is set thousands of years in the future. Maloney does an excellent job of immersing you in the mythos of this new series without bogging you down with unecessary exposition. In the beginning, you wonder quickly how Hunter will have the ability to affect the universe that he's been thrust into (Like he has in Wingman), but it quickly and effectively becomes clear. The Hunter character has the ability to polarize people around him, with good natured people drawn to him, and evil natured people thrust into positions to remove this catalyst for their plans. There always seems to be an overarcing evil entity or organization in Maloney's books (The New Order, The Circle, Red Star, The 4th Reich), and in this one we see the beginning of a new one. If you've enjoyed Maloney's books in the past, or are looking for a good action/adventure novel to take with you on vacation or on a flight, you could do alot worse.
Great Science Fiction Adventure.......2002-04-19
I really enjoyed this story. Hawk Hunter is the super fighter pilot who used to battle the Russians but now is battling villians in outer space. He still has his F-16 fighter jet which is now the fastest thing in the galaxy, even though the Empire's spaceships can go two light years a minute! I hope this series goes for as long as the original Wingman series did.
Very different, good, and definitley maloney........2001-11-24
I just realized a few weeks ago, that these new books were out, and so i picked both of them up, and i must say, Maloney, always known for his imagination, carnage, sex, drugs, and gambling, sticks to his guns in this series so far....Im surpsied there isnt more gambling in this series yet, since i know the author, Mack Maloney, and he loves to bet on his Miami Dolphins. Some of the stuff he gets into in this two books of the series, is completely out there. I have read books ranging from Applied Cryptology, to most of the star wars books, maloney's latest series is definitely pushign the envelope in the science fiction arena. Supertime? Dimensional cubes that hold objects? WOW, out there indeed, but i also can honestly say, you can start reading the books, blown away by the strangeness of them, and look back at yer watch or the clock, and relize you have been reading for an hour, and you never would have guessed it. So definite good books, well worth a look. And if yer readin this Mack, cowboys vs. fish, whenever they play again, its a definite bet :)

A down-to-earth look at the spiritual power of sex
Sex and the Sacred examines the spiritual dimension of human sexuality in a way that is free of religious affiliation but still open to traditional religion and belief in God. Dr. Daniel Helminiak, author of the best-selling What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality, looks at the relationship between sexuality and spirituality, first, from a humanistic perspective and, then, a more familiar Christian point of view. In particular, he encourages LGBTI people to reclaim their spiritual heritage without apology. This unique book emphasizes spiritual commitment as an essential facet of LGBTI/queer consciousness and addresses such burning themes as coming out, the importance of self-acceptance, gay marriage, gay bashing, and the ethics of gay sex.
Sex and the Sacred combines a psychological approach to spirituality with common sense and compassion, inspiring a break from moralistic religion and an understanding of what true spirituality means. The book applies this understanding to Christian topics such as the Bible, Fundamentalism, and the future of Christianity, and shows how coming out was an issue for Jesus, how homosexual experience relates to the Christian Trinity, and how Western Civilization became so sex-negative.
Sex and the Sacred presents in the end a radical vision of Christianity open to all people. Religious leaders of all denominations, educators, counselors, members of the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community, non-religious spiritual seekers, and anyone interested in the relationship between spirituality and sexuality will find this book enlightening and uplifting.
Sex and the Sacred examines:
The spiritual drive that is built into human sexuality
The standard religious arguments against gay marriage
A sustained argument that Biblical Fundamentalism is not Christian
Spiritual lessons from the AIDS epidemic
The right and wrong of sex--queer and otherwise
Homosexuality in Catholic teaching and practice
Sexual ethics without religion
A vision for a renewed Christianity within a global community

Disappointing.......2003-02-09
This book is very dated with mostly black & white photographs and some colour shots that show 60's interiors. It is a technical manual which is of little use in planning an interior in the 21st Century. I would not recommend this book as it is also poor quality paper and considerably overpriced.
Fabric for Interior by Jack Lenor Larsen.......2000-06-10
Jack Lenor Larsen's name should be widely known and respected throughout the textile arts community. He was originally a hand weaver trained at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He saw the commercial and aesthetic potential of ethic handwoven fabrics from India, Africa, etc. He designed exquisitely beautiful and original fabrics, some of which were based on traditional folk weaves, hired others to produce them by hand and marketed them to the architecture and design community. That was the start of the Larsen empire. His fabrics today are still uniquely original--he produces fabrics from wire, plastics, synthetics and natural fibers, and the construction of the fabric is always a surprise. Because of his originality and the depth of his understanding of textiles, he is especially well suited to creating a book of this type. There is nothing about textiles that Larsen doesn't know! I have used this book as a text in a Textiles class (in an Interior Design department). It is better organized and more clearly presented than any other textile book I know. It's easy for students to understand the construction of different weaves; the text is clear and the illustrations (both photo and line drawings) are excellent. Larsen has also targeted just the right information (including a chapter on professional practices) and just the right AMOUNT of information, for students of design, architecture and textiles. This is not a book for handweavers to learn from--it is intended for the interior design student--but even long-time weavers will have a better understanding of their craft after reading this book. I recommend it without hesitation.

Book Description
Marcel Franciscono offers an exhaustive historical and critical study of
Klee's artistic personality and thought. Drawing extensively on
documentation published since 1940, Franciscono highlights the
extraordinary range of artistic, literary, and philosophical speculation Klee
brought to his work. The portrait that emerges is one of a great comic
artist, an ironist whose most characteristic pictures pit beauty of form and
color against the dubious nature of things, yet one whose satiric depictions
of everyday life extend to the most rarified evocations of nature.
"There is no comparable book in the recent Klee literature.
Marcel Franciscono introduces the reader to the artist and, in turn, to all
the major Klee problems uncovered by specialists working in one or
another area of the master's work. The result is a rich symposium in
which all these opinions, as well as the relevant biographical facts, are
returned to individual works of art, illuminating them exquisitely. In this
low-keyed fashion emerges the splendid general study that is required of
every generation for a great artist."—Daniel Robbins, Union College

Another Celine Dion Song Book.......2007-03-07
Most of these songs appear in other Celine Dion Songbooks--this is one of the only to contain "Je T'aime Encore" ("I Love You, Sill") And to my knowledge the only book readily available in the US to cotain that song--it is also available in the Songbook that parallels the "On Ne Change Pas" French Greatest Hits album.

Book Description
This unauthorized biography traces Celine Dion's Cinderella-like rise to fame from singing on her family's restaurant table-tops to her grand Las Vegas debut in the Colosseum at Caesar's Palace. Despite her humble beginnings in the small Quebec town of Charlemagne, Celine was determined to become an international star. And, despite her extraordinary achievements, she remains humble, loyal and thankful. Celine Dion's five-octave voice has become the soundtrack of our age. A multiple Juno, Grammy, and Oscar Award winner, she has sold 160 million CDs, surpassing all other artists in history to become the brightest star in the pop culture pantheon. There is no limit for me, and there never will be. Celine Dion
