Read one paragraph of a Charles Baxter story, and you know you're in the hands of a master. Consider, for example, the opening line of "Winter Journey": "Harrelson, perpetual Ph.D. student, poverty-stricken dissertation nonfinisher, academic man of all work, gourmand, stands in the tiny kitchen cluttered with yellow note pads, a basketball, books, misplaced bookmarks, and boxes of ant killer, staring down at a dented saucepan of cold soup." In a single sentence, Baxter has limned a whole life. The story that follows of Harrelson's drunken drive through the snow to rescue a fiancée who no longer wants him simply fills in the contours. Baxter specializes in ordinary lives--each story is an accretion of details, some funny, some disturbing, that create a complete world. The events that happen in this world are equally ordinary--people make love, make dinner, make decisions they may or may not carry out--but just when you think you know where things are going, Baxter throws in a gentle curve that sends you right off the road.
The title story, for example, takes the reader through a day in the life of Dinah Nadler, a dentist, wife, and mother whose regular consultations with a psychic take a dark turn. His warning that there's a "black spot ... blinking, at the horizon" of her life freights even the most commonplace actions with dread. Baxter only hints at what might be happening in Dinah's life, but he does it so well that the ambiguity of his mild-seeming conclusion, "Then she went back to the window, cupped her hands on both sides of her face, and looked outside to see what was happening," is truly chilling. This lyrical, intensely personal collection of short stories mines the depths of simple souls in various stages of turmoil. A couple struggling with the death of their baby, a man painting his way out of the drudgery of his misspent life and into the melancholoy colors of old age, a young man intent on gaining fame through the sensational act of smashing through plate glass--these small stories are rendered large through gentle ironies woven into elegant prose.
This collection could easily fall into common trap of hackneyed, pointless introspection, but it doesn't. Each story is far too clever, well-crafted, and even funny. In their own way each is wrapped in a veneer of hope, possibility, or at least, dignity. One of the cleverest of the bunch is "Gryphon", in which a young boy learns about the world from an eccentric teacher he's not likely to forget soon. "A Late Sunday Afternoon by the Huron" is an intimate pastiche, a beautiful literary take on a famous French painting. "Stained Glass" spins a familiar tale of love's follies with a delightful twist.
Baxter brings the beauty of language and the saving grace of personal affection to his characters. In a short time they become old acquaintances. They're people one can continue to learn from the more one thinks.

This collection is made extraordinary largely because of the terrain Baxter explores. He pokes into moments like a retired businessman's struggle to stay retired ("Cataract"), a married couple's trip to New Mexico that is meant to help them cope with the recent death of their infant daughter ("Surprised by Joy") and does so in a way that makes them particular to the characters involved. "Winter Journey" is "about" a couple's breakup, and "Talk Show" involves a boy's first experience with death, but you wouldn't describe those stories that way if talking to a friend. You'd talk about the details, the way the protagonist's car in "Winter Journey" "smells of burned electrical wire and popcorn," and the amazing depth we are treated to in "Talk Show." The latter story is written in a very odd third person that sometimes takes us into a young boy's mind and sometimes keeps us external. It's a lovely story. "Gryphon" is audaciously funny and "Saul and Patsy are Getting Comfortable in Michigan" presents us with two of Baxter's most cherishable personages, who appear in later collections. This book is poignant and sensitive and wry and very very good on the second and third reads.

On Lost Horizon: You'll love this story of lost civilization, where people live hundreds of years. Hidden in the Mountains of the Blue Moon, the survivors of an airplane crash wonder into a charmed valley, where no one thinks of death. The hero falls in love with one of the women.
I don't want to tell too much, but I do highly recommend this classic adventure first published in 1933. It has all the ambiance of that era, and as one Amazon reviewer said, it is the perfect book to curl up with on a slow day.

The Lost Horizon really brings to mind the question of what is your paradise?
This is a book about a man who, along with three other companions, ends up in a mysterious civilization in some community lost among the mountains. This new life offers immortality (or close to it), but there is one catch. You may not leave. Some are able to become used to the confines of the little city but others (mainly one of the main character's companions) refuse to accept and make an attemt at an escape.
The main character has to decide if he will stay, because for him this new place is paradise, or if he will help the other young man escape.
It is an interesting book and, once you get past the first couple of pages, it goes by fast. I would recommend this book to anyone.

After seeing Frank Capra's film version of this book, I had to read James Hilton's novel. The book and the film are very similar, so my love for the film has transferred to the original work. Lost Horizon is the story of four people, an American, a young British soldier, a middle-aged British man, and a female missionary, who have the misfortune of being kidnapped on an airplane. They are crashed near a mysterious and dismal mountain somewhere in Tibet, and all seems to be lost to them, including their pilot who dies in the crash. However, they are rescued by a group of men who live in a strange valley nearby. They call their oasis Shangri-La.
The middle-aged British man is named Conway; he has the best grasp of the goals of Shangri-La of any of the people in his group. Instead of fidgeting when he is told he and his friends will never leave the villiage, he embraces his new home where everything is done in moderation. He marvels over the expensive library of treasures and begins to love a tiny Chinese girl with a fondness for music. He has the good fortune to meet the High Lama of the monastary there and to be told the secrets of Shangri-La.
Conway's sentiments narrate the story, and his calm personality resonates with the reader and makes the sometimes outlandish beliefs of Shangri-La become vivid and desirable.
This is a magical book with the same feeling of hope and inspiration that is present in Frank Capra's films. Although it was written in the early 30s, the sentiments are applicable in today's world. Thus, it is a timeless classic that every person should have the good fortune of stumbling upon. It will never leave you.

Classic work - timeless. Psychological study of the protagonist - contast of who he is v. how he is perceived. Can't we all relate to that? And, contrast of Western v. Eastern mindset.

Book four continues to push the plot..........2005-05-12
Ex-Green Berret Eric Dane has a nightmare of the end of the world. Is it just a dream or a warning? As he and the rest of the world fight the Shadows in the present, they're running out of time. The Shadows are starting to play hard ball - they're pushing for all or nothing. They want the Earth, one way or another. The key to victory seems to be a map.
As Dane and his team fight in our time, the fight is also linked to the past, in 480 B.C., where an agent of the Shadows is helping the Persian army against the Greek City-States. The Battle of Thermopylae will decide our past AND our future!
Not only is there lots of action but we get to see what's inside the Valkyrie's suit and what's inside the Shadows' sphere ships.

Atlantis Gate is very full of action, and is an excellent continuation of #3, Devil's Sea, which was also a great read. I recommend starting at the beginning with Atlantis, then reading Burmuda Triange, then Devil's Sea, and then this one--Atlantis Gate.
As I stated in my review of Devil's Sea, the story is far fetched, but hey, this is science fiction! It's a magnificent journey into another realm. I was so captivated, I read it in one sitting.
The characterization is really quite good for a science fiction action novel. The main character--Dane--is immensely likeable, and he's surrounded by other interesting characters. The parallel story line between the distant past and present made the book even more fascinating to me. There's also plenty of scientific fact and theory interspersed for plausibility.
The book had a satisfying ending, but clearly left room for a sequel, which is forthcoming.
I won't try to give a synopsis of the story, since that's been done umpteen times. I will say that if you want a pure, hard science fiction novel that is completely believable, you might find some of the elements of this story a bit too much. But, if you're willing to open up your imagination and enjoy the ride, this book is thoroughly entertaining!
Book Review for "Atlantis Gate" by Greg Donegan.......2003-01-21
Interested in remote viewing, Atlantis, time-travel, the lines on the Nazca plain, pyramids, and human existence? This may be a book for you. Ever wonder about the Valkyries, multiple dimensions, today's military? Then, this is certainly a book for you.
Greg Donegan's book explores, among other things, the relationships between modern warfare and ancient Greek citystates. Do you think the events of 9-11 were unique? Read about how Leonidas and his band of 300 Spartans held off a Persan invasion of 10,000 troups lead by Xerses in 480 B.C. and how that battle connects with today's events.
Part fiction, part fact, "Atlantis Gate" by Greg Donegan will appeal to those who normally may not read much fiction, but who are interested in the subject matter. Did I mention that "Greg Donegan" is not the author's real name? Maybe there's more to "Conspiracy Theory" than what meets the eye.
And, whatever happened to Amelia Earhart? And how was that connected with the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl? "Donegan" connects the dots and the reader versed in historic events will appreciate the effort and the story.
Well-written, quick-reading, and fascinating. Those are the best words to describe "Atlantis Gate". I'm on to other books by "Greg Donegan" (or whatever the author's real name is).
Disappointing............2002-09-04
After reading every book in this series, and just about everything else Mr. "Donegan" has written, this one disappointed me greatly. It seems like it could have been a good book but ultimately felt unfinished. Apparently the story needed to come to an end but there was simply no way to do it justice in the number of pages alloted. I was left with several very big "how did he know that?" questions.
It is a shame and certainly not inidicative of this author. I'll still read whatever he comes out with next.

A good and exciting novel like its predecessors. The plot is set at different times and places as usual. What I liked best this time is the character of the Spartan King Leonidas who the author developed with care and understanding. Of course, again it is a fight between good and bad, of bad superpowers and "weak" men who can only defend themselves against an anonymous timeless enemy by using extraordinary ingenuity, which makes them stronger than they think they are. On the time level of 480 B.C. this is mirrored by Leonidas' self-denying bravery and the absolute wickedness of Xerxes.
I, myself, this novel has a finale that could be a worthy ending to the series. Sure, this ending is in no way final. The author left some questions unanswered, the Shadow is still somewhere, and this could lead to a sequel. A would have preferred a definite ending and I do not think another novel is really necessary. If this goes on we may grow tired of the subject and the first novels of the series would not deserve this fate

The book is presented with excellent history and interesting personal history of Susan Williams-Ellis and her family. The photos are very helpful and interesting and now I am collecting older Portmeirion while adding at the same time to my Botanic Garden dinnerware. This book is now on my coffee table for reference and for others in my home to enjoy. I highly recommend it to antique collectors as well as those with a passion for Portmeirion.

Chock full of useful techniques.......2005-11-03
After I began taking a stained glass class, I ran to the library and the bookstore. My instructor is good, but he's only one opinion. I must have looked at a dozen books, but this is one of the two that I brought home. I'm certainly glad I did.
Like many such books, there are three sections: basic techiques, projects, and a gallery that shows what you can do (but offers no instruction -- just an ooh-ahh opportunity).
The techniques section is among the best I've encountered. In a sense, the info that beginners need is all about the same: the supplies you need, the types of glass available, etc. However, Creative Stained Glass always seems to have just a little more info that do the other books... maybe it's just four paragraphs about the kinds of solder instead of two, but at this point you need all the info you can get.
That first section is 40 pages, which is more than most books devote to the basics. The writing is friendly, too.
In addition, the projects are pretty! I've seen far too many stained glass books in which half the projects are, well, lame. The glass equivalent of a crying clown painted on velvet. The projects are more likely to be leaded rather than to use copper foil; most beginner books seem to choose copper. Each project has about three pages of instruction, plus the patter; my one quibble is that it often doesn't tell you by how much to enlarge the pattern.
I'm not positive I could have learned stained glass wholly from this or any book (this is one area in which a hands-on class makes all the difference), but this one would have given me the most confidence.
Overall, I've gotten the best advice from this book. I'm glad it's in my library. You should probably grab a copy, too.

this book helped me on the first day it arrived. i needed help on how to "model" a curtain wall. there it was. the steps that the book went into detail were very good. i keep this book at my desk at work!
No 1 Reference for any Architectural Office.......2005-10-14
I've been using Revit since release 4. I'm on release 8 now.
The help menu within the software itself is detailed and user friendly, but it does not address issues specific to architectural offices i.e. implementing new software into an established practice.
The book 'Introducing & Implementing Autodesk Revit Building' more than adequately addresses every conceivable issue regarding implementation and when used in conjunction with Autodesk Revit's built in help menu should be the only references you'll need to take you from concept to completion on just about any sized architectural project.
It's a sound investment for the novice or more advanced Revit user.

Well, this is it...
Bergman is notorioiusly difficult to sum up - we've had biographical, psychoanalytical, religious, aesthetic, God-knows-what-else approaches... But this book is about the best you'll get. Cowie, rightly regarded as an expert on Swedish (and Finnish9 film, provides a readable, informative and sensitive history. It has that perfect combination of enough fact for the uninitiated and enough interpretation for the devotee. As if that wasn't sufficient, it's been updated up to 1992 and contains lots of handsome images - not only of the great man and his entourage, but also of the films themslves, just right for stoking the embers of mnemory (especially if you haven't got a video-recorder...)
Quite simply an authoritative, genial account of a 'difficult' genius.
