5 out of 5 stars Where Wolf? There Wolf!.......2006-11-10

The basics is this: A young man turns 18 and becomes a werewolf. Like the Hulk, he happens to save the day while fighting the beast within. As a bonus, Dracula shows up to cause trouble. Overall, this is a good collection of a forgotten hero. If you like Werewolves, then buy this book.

      5 out of 5 stars I like this a lot........2006-09-15

I like this. It's all about a guy who turns into a werewolf but he fights badguys while he's a wolf. It's a must have for werewolf fans.

2 out of 5 stars Where wolf? There wolf!.......2006-05-11

In the early `70s, Marvel had a small line of horror comics that supplemented their superhero line. Most significant - and the best in the bunch - was Tomb of Dracula. Although other reviewers seem to look on it more favorably, to me, Werewolf by Night seems only significant in its mediocrity.

Werewolf by Night follows Jack Russell, who, upon his eighteenth birthday, inherits the family curse of becoming a wolfman during the three nights of the full moon. (Perhaps he could have had a hint of his canine leanings based on the fact he seemed to be named after the Jack Russell terrier.) During his time as a werewolf, Jack becomes savage and has sub-human intelligence; although murderous, he winds up rarely killing innocent people. Most of the issues deal with Jack's quest to free himself of the curse while various low-rent villains either try to stop him or use him for their own ends. Jack is also concerned about his sister Lissa, who will eventually come under the curse herself.

Why does Werewolf by Night fail to be interesting? The standout reason is Jack himself, who is a rather dull character, with the few supporting characters being rather flat as well. Even as a werewolf, he is not all that exciting; initially, he can hardly hold his own against normal people. Also, generally the writing is weak. Many of the early stories have the villain vanquished by a freak event, rather than through the skills of the werewolf.

In later issues, Jack must contend with Baron Thunder and the Committee as well as an intrepid detective on the hunt for a werewolf; both of these storylines extend over quite a few issues but wrap up so abruptly you get the feeling the writers got bored and just wanted to end things. I was also not very impressed with the art; maybe its just the transfer to black and white, but it just didn't work for me; as an example, when characters sweat, they look more like they're melting.

Although rarely awful, Werewolf by Night also is rarely good. Compared to other Marvel comics from the same era, this one only stands out in its banality. I recommend this book for Essentials completists only; if you're of a casual reader, go elsewhere (such as Tomb of Dracula).

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for Werewolf by Night fans!.......2006-02-25

This book contains all of the essential stories that made Werewolf by Night a thrilling, memorable read at the time it was published. It also contains none of the weird, melodramatic and rather boring stories that eventually killed the series off entirely.

These are the stories that made the original comic a unique, heart-stopping masterpiece about the struggle in all of us to define what it is that makes us human. In many ways, this collection represents the finest werewolf fiction ever written.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff! Ploog's art is spectacular. Color would only get in the way........2006-02-12

"Essential Werewolf by Night Vol. 1" is a fine addition to Marvel's Essentials line. The book reprints the earliest stories from Marvel Spotlight, continues onto the character's own series for 21 issues, and also throws in three stories from other sources (Marvel Team-Up, Dracula and Giant-Sized Creatures). All in all, it amounts to 27 issues of "Werewolf by Night".

The set-up is your basic werewolf story that you might be familiar with from old Lon Chaney movies. In this case, the werewolf-ism is an hereditary curse that kicks in when young Jack Russell turns 18. What ensues is a classic coming of age story with the supernatural mixed in, as Jack learns about his history, encounters a series of strange friends and foes, and searches for the mystical Darkhold.

Other than the cringe-inducing pun of a character name (Jack Russell--yikes!), "Werewolf by Night" features beautiful art by Michael Ploog in the first bunch of issues. When I started the first story and saw the first Ploog panel, featured a shadowy figure walking through a rundown streat with overturned trash cans and such, I knew I was glad that this is a black and white volue. The printing here is just sharp enough to allow Ploog's majestic work to shine through without color to get in the way. Ploog IS one of the greats, and that kind of artist is good enough that their line-work triggers your imagination to put the color in automatically. There is very solid work by legendary pros like Gene Colan, Gil Kane (!) and Tom Sutton, but Ploog is the star and the selling point of this collection. They illustrates stories written by Gerry Conway (of current Law & Order: CI fame), Roy Thomas, Mike Friederich, Doug Moench, Len Wein and Marv Wolfman (later to be the legendary writer of "Crisis on Infinite Earths" for DC, but with his last name, this assignment was a natural).

The quality does fall off a bit after Ploog leaves. The other artists are great creators, legends even, but Ploog defined the look of the series in such a way that it just wasn't the same without him. Similarly, the musical chairs scripting duties hurt the dramatic flow of the series immensely. Like a lot of "mid-major" Marvel books, there is a period here where no one knew quite what to do with ol' Jack.

I enjoyed most of the stories. The Dracula crossover/showdown seemed to inject new life into the series late, and the Spidey teamup provides a nice, mainstream final statement for this volume.

      3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2005-09-24

I have been reading books on erotica for about two years. I did not care for this book, I felt it could have been written better. This book is about a woman who is a wolfen and a man who
is a vampire. The two are to be joined because of a contract. They get together and have mind blowing sex( if you know what I mean)). They also have a woman name BB in the book, BB stands for bloodbank. Original right? The book has some twist that could hold your interest. The book has good and evil and two kinds of vampires. I do not think this book is well written like Lora Leighs wolf breeds.

I just loved Lucavarious! He was very unique amongst his kind and was often tender, caring and funny, yet frightening in his concern and protectiveness of Dark. Very steamy!!A keeper and I will be reading anything else by S. Burke.

This book has a great story! It isn't just sex scenes. In fact all of Stephanie Burkes books have great stories. I highly recommend this book or any of her books to anybody who likes something a little bit out of the norm or accepted!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales review.......2003-09-15

      By TT reviewer Hunter McKenna

Dark is a Wolfen female, who runs to Lucavarious (Luca), a Vampesi, to fulfill a promise from her dying parents. A marriage contract has been drawn up between the two factions. Someone is out to stop the marriage and when that fails, Dark becomes the target. Dark is getting to know her husband, helping her people, and learning about the Vampesi people.

Luca is 400 years old and Dark is twenty-something. It is interesting to watch his patience with her. Dark, being Wolfen, naturally is in heat. Poor Luca. He gets bruises all over trying to keep up with her in bed, but he's not complaining. Her comment is that Luca is the best in that department, so why wouldn't she go back for more.

LUCAVARIOUS is a wonderful story. I started reading it late the first night and was up until 5am, when my eyes started getting blurry, and I could no longer see the screen. I didn't want it put it down. I hope there are men out there with Luca's charisma and humor. There are two lines of Luca's that I love, one being "Your walking vibrator with fangs awaits your every command, Lady", and the second is... Women were strange creatures and better dealt with on a full stomach, with a clear head, and an owner's manual to figure them out. I think I will put these lines in big bold font on my wall. They made me smile everytime I read them.

Ms Burke's one liners and witty segments are priceless. The secondary character of Luca's cousin, Omnubius, has you shaking your head at his antics. I look forward to when we get to see more of cousin Omnubius and BB.

Anyone who likes Vampires, Wolves, or just plain romance should get LUCAVARIOUS, you won't be disappointed. I'm looking ahead to reading more by this talented author. LUCAVARIOUS is a keeper.

      Book Description

Dhyani Ywahoo is a member of the traditional Etowah Band of the Eastern Tsalagi (Cherokee) Nation. Trained by her grandparents, she is the twenty-seventh generation to carry the ancestral wisdom of the Ywahoo lineage. Charged with the duty to rekindle the fire of clear mind and right relationship in these changing times, she is a guide to all who walk the Beauty Road. In her first book she shares with readers these precious oral teachings of her people. Voices of Our Ancestors teaches practical ways of transforming obstacles to happiness and good relationships, fulfilling one's life purpose, manifesting peace and abundance, and renewing the planet. It includes meditations; healing rituals; instructions for working with crystals; and teachings on how to practice generosity and harmony. According to the ancient Native American calendar, we have recently entered a new cycle of Thirteen Heavens, a new age in which we have the opportunity to let go of aggression and fear and begin to live a life of enlightened consciousness. With a voice that is powerful, prophetic, and compassionate, Dhyani Ywahoo calls on us to become "Peacekeepers" in our hearts and in the world.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW .......2007-01-04

Dhyani Ywahoo' s teachings in this book cover it all. It's a combination of east and west, quantum physics, Malayan. It's the best book I've ever read which gives hope for our future.
She does have a Native American way of speaking and it's not easily understood at first. However if one keeps picking it up at different times in their life, you'll get what you need.
      It's a bible.

1 out of 5 stars Makes You Sicker than the Flu................2005-01-07

The novel (and I mean novel as in a fictional story) Voices of Ancestors will make you sick to your stomach if you know anything about Cherokee, or any "Native American," teachings. The author's constant generalizations, like the "Indian voice can bring rain" -or something to that effect, is really weird. Gee, I'm half "Indian" and I can't go outside and make it rain, too bad. But really, the mixture of buddhism, "newage" crystal magic, and minute elements of Cherokee teachings mislead readers into thinking that all the information presented in this book is Cherokee practice. I could not read this entire story because most of it is false and it just made me sad and angry. I can't believe that people can be so gullable and misinformed that they believe that anything that claims to be "Indian" really is. This book should not even be allowed to be sold, that's how false it is. Maybe it is because of books like these that people do not have any clue who the Cherokee, and the hundreds of other nations, really are. So, this author's broad generalizations that all "Indians" are the same, that we are all in harmony with nature, that we all can do this magical stuff just naturally, are sickening and in no way do they represent anyone but the author. I am an individual with free will (in other words I am human), nature does not rule my life (Indians have difficulty finding time to recycle too), and I do not have special magical powers that allow me to control my environment or the natural world. Ywahoo is a fruad, and you can find proof of this. I am not going to say thank you, just regretfully a reader. P.S. -It is impossible to rate this book as zero stars, but if I could I would.

5 out of 5 stars much more than new age dribble.......2004-01-27

very very interesting book. granted it has its share of grandiose conclusions or assumptions. many rituals and other defining instruments. but the heart and soul of this book is beautiful. it could have been the timing of when i read it. but the one thing i can say, is it got this rat off his wheel. some of her perspectives are just simply beautiful and oh so profound. it left me with the feeling of very benignly putting a match to the american dream. which i did hehehehehe

      5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-08-08

          Book Description

This book is the first comprehensive study of the driving force behind Native political activism, and the only scholarly treatment of North American Indian politics which integrates an explicitly Native perspective. With a broad historical scope rich in detail, and drawing on the particular experience of the Mohawks of Kahnawake, it offers an explanation of Indian and Inuit political activism focusing on the importance of traditional values and institutions in shaping Native responses to the state. The book explains the recent rise of a militant assertion of sovereignty on the part of Native people in terms of three major factors: the existence of alternative institutions in the body of the nation's traditional culture; the self-conscious development of an alternative identity; and a persistent pattern of negative interaction with the state. It differs from other analyses focusing on similar factors in that it views nationalism not as a movement which activates in response to external factors, but as a persistent feature of political life which manifests itself in either a latent or active form in response to the interaction of the three factors discussed in the model.

A Comprehensive Cyclopedia of Information for the Home, from 1887. "In presenting to the public the "WHITE HOUSE COOK BOOK," the publishers believe they can justly claim that it more fully represents the progress and present perfection of the culinary art than any previous work. In point of authorship, it stands preëminent. Hugo Ziemann was at one time caterer for that Prince Napoleon who was killed while fighting the Zulus in Africa. He was afterwards steward of the famous Hotel Splendide in Paris. Later he conducted the celebrated Brunswick Café in New York, and still later he gave to the Hotel Richelieu, in Chicago, a cuisine which won the applause of even the gourmets of foreign lands. It was here that he laid the famous "spread" to which the chiefs of the warring factions of the Republican Convention sat down in June, 1888, and from which they arose with asperities softened, differences harmonized and victory organized. Mrs. F.L. Gillette is no less proficient and capable, having made a life-long and thorough study of cookery and housekeeping, especially as adapted to the practical wants of average American homes."

                              Book Description

Masterpieces of French Jewelry is a delightful testament to the power of jewelry—like all true art—to mirror changes in America's evolving social milieu. It offers an enchanting lens through which to view America's rise from frontier nation to an industrial superpower, with a new moneyed class hungry for recognition and status. French jewelry provided that and more. This sumptuously-designed full color book—the first and only one on this subject—features over 80 photographs of the most remarkable pieces that found their way into prominent American collections. It also showcases a brilliant array of styles. There are chapters devoted to jewelry characteristic of the Art Nouveau period, along with Art Deco, the Victorian Era, 1940s retro, and the 1960s through more contemporary styles. An added bonus: one-of-a-kind jewelry creations from notable artists such as Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Matta, and Arman. The publication of Masterpieces of French Jewelry coincides with the National Jewelry Institute's exhibition, "Masterpieces of French Jewelry from Twentieth-Century American Collections," which will begin at The Forbes Galleries in New York in September 2006.

1 out of 5 stars The publisher should be embarassed!.......2007-06-12

As a previous reviewer stated, I also saw the "Masterpieces" exhibit at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco last month, and it was one of the most beautiful shows I've seen at any museum in some time. As with numerous other exhibits I've had the good fortune to see over the years, I expected a good-quality book or catalogue for purchase. Was I in for a surprise with this book! It is JUST AWFUL!

The book gets it's one-star rating because the text is interesting enough, and the typeface is legible. But why does someone buy a book on jewelry in the first place? For the pictures of course, and the pictures in this book are amateurish (the most polite word I could come up with). Most of the photographs appear to have been shot straight on with a flash, no side or backlighting. The jewelry looks flat, one-dimensional, and washed out. Basically, it all looks like cheap costume jewelry. Many photos are printed against a bright, white background. They look like they were cut and pasted in low-grade photo editing software. But worst of all are the numerous shots that are out of focus. There's no excuse for this.

It's disappointing to go to such a nice exhibit and have nothing to remember it by. It amazes me that the National Jewelry Institute approved this publication. The Institute and Running Press really blew this one.

This book documents the astounding pieces contained in the Masterpieces of French Jewelry Exhibit at San Francisco's Palace of the Legion of Honor thru June 10, 2007.
This exhibition honors the breathtaking inspiration, unsurpassed craftmanship and variety of French jewelry from the Art Nouveau period at the beginning of the 20th century to contemporary pieces. All the jewels in the exhibition are illustrated in this inspirational book, in full color and exaggerated detail.
The exhibition begins with several lavish Art Nouveau creations by René Lalique and Georges Fouquet, moving into the Belle Epoch, Deco and Retro styles. The book and exhibit also feature original contemporary examples by Joseph Arthur Rosenthal (JAR).
Fabulous addition to a jewelry lover's library.

Author Judith Price is President of the National Jewelry Institute: her background has long been in French art and jewelry, so she's the perfect choice to write an authoritative review and history in MASTERPIECES OF FRENCH JEWELRY. Over a hundred photos of pieces owned by Americans - most never seen by the public before - accompany historical background which covers jewelry from the late 1800s to modern times. There's a thoughtful attention to the layout on each page that juxtaposes large-size photos of pieces with good-sized, clear text descriptions and commentary. Both specialty art and jewelry libraries and more general-interest holdings will find in MASTERPIECES OF FRENCH JEWELRY a welcome, popular reference.

You might purchase this book for the tolerably decent photos of French jewelry, but don't expect a scholarly, in-depth discussion of the subject. Price's writing is almost laughably bad, consisting as it does of pointless, unhelpful captions ("The engraved goldwork on the front of the owl signals its use as an accessory of a refined lady.") and smarmy, gushing intros for a bunch of B- and C-list socialite collectors, including such luminaries as Actress, Producer, and One of America's Leading Motion Picture Executives Dina Merrill Hartley (daughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post--"one of the richest women in the world," we're told) and "the First Lady of Fiction" ...Barbara Taylor Bradford. When Price gets around to discussing French jewelry, the result is much like a high school report cobbled together from material cribbed from an encyclopedia entry--an effect weirdly reinforced by the publisher's decision to print the text in double-spaced format. Her observations are trite, obvious or altogether incorrect (and sometimes all three). Apparently, Price's presidency of the National Jewelry Institute (founded...oh, about last week) is qualification enough to write on the subject. Or maybe it's the fact (see dustjacket flap) that she lives in New York and "Paris, France."

Here's a dazzling look at the history of our country told through its jewelry. Produced to coincide with the National Jewelry Institute's America the Beautiful exhibition, which will begin at New York's new American Folk Art Museum and travel throughout Europe and Asia, this sumptuously photographed coffee-table book traces the emotional and cultural implications of jewelry in America. From the Lady Liberty brooch, made in Connecticut in 1797, to the simple, classic prong setting for diamonds developed by Charles Louis Tiffany in 1886, to the elegant cocktail jewelry developed as a protest against Prohibition, Masterpieces of American Jewelry showcases our country's history in an enchanting new way.

Every year I look forward to the Christmas with Southern Living book. I enjoy them very much and have been collecting them for several years. I've tried the recipes and have never been disappointed. The beautiful color photos offer loads of decorating and entertaining ideas.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A winner........2006-10-15

CHRISTMAS WITH SOUTHERN LIVING 2006 (0848731158, $29.95) isn't strictly a cookbook, though recipes are its core: it combines menus and time-saving holiday plans as well as party ideas with dishes which lend to entertainment and family gatherings. Many are fast, easy editor's picks, with chapters handily divided by type of entertainment: brunch buffet, office party, dinner party, and the like. A winner.

Like many of you, I collect these books year after year. This year was very disappointing. The book really is mainly recipes. I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas. This year the book is really lacking in them. In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration. This year you basically have one mantle. That's it. Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"

If you really want this book, buy it used or look at it first in the library before you make your decision.

I love this book! I give to my 3 girls as well. I have gotten this book almost every year since it was first published. It has decorating suggestions, crafts, recipes and just all kinds of information to make your Christmas the best ever.

christmas decor ideas...great centerpieces, table scapes, wreaths..ect.
I happen to decorate my house in a very "natural", woodsy theme and this book has loads of those...all just beautiful. To top it off, it has wonderful recipes too! Many times you will get a book like this and it will have a few things you love but the majority is so so. Not this one, I can say that I love everything in this book! Great purchase.

Not what I expected. I have most of the other editions and it seems they took the best of the past 25 years and put it all in one book. I hope that 2006 edition is better!!!

This was my first purchase of a Christmas With Southern Living book and I was quite happy with my purchase and am anticipating the 2006!! I took this to my parents one weekend when my sisters were there and they all wanted a copy. I used quite a few of the recipes from the book for my Thanksgiving Dinner and they went over well especially the Butter Coconut Pie--YUMMY. As I am not a seasoned CWSL book buyer I don't have others to compare it to (except for one from the 1990's my sister gave me which I felt was not half as nice as this one)but would give this ***** five stars.

1 out of 5 stars 25th Anniversary Edition Falls Far Short of Expectations.......2006-02-03

I am a decades-long lover of Southern Living publications. Whether we buy the magazines, the cookbooks, or the home products, many of us count on Southern Living for unsurpassed quality and creativity.

I am extremely disappointed with "Christmas with Southern Living 2005". This edition marks the 25th Anniversary of this regularly phenomenal book. I can hardly believe this belongs in the same category as the volumes from previous years.

Certainly, the color photography remains true to form, wonderfully presented. But it's the sheer lack of creative craft ideas, and the fewer number of quality recipe ideas that mar this normally fantastic book. I was expecting a five-star product for the silver anniversary - what I fear I've received is far below what SL should have offered.

I expect CwSL 2006 to make up for what 2005's edition was lacking - this company will most certainly not let us down again. I'll continue to buy Southern Living books without hesitation - and with excitement! I'm simply disappointed that the 2005 book will find its way to the back of the bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the Christmas perfectionist!.......2005-10-25

I'm an admitted Christmas fanatic. I love decorating the house, baking everyday in the month of December & decking out the tree. This book has so many great ideas & recipes, especially the planned menus for breakfast, lunch & dinner! You can never go wrong buying a Southern Living book.
