The survival of an innocent in a world of horrors .......2007-01-09
This is a very moving work. Its heroine Tzila is a most sympathetic character. She is the youngest child in a poor Jewish family, and is repeatedly reprobated because she does not like her siblings do well at school. When the War threatens her family they escape leaving her behind to guard the house. Thus begin her adventures on her own, a Jewish child in a largely hostile surroundings. Her story in some way parallels that of Appelfeld himself who as an eight- year old child orphaned from his mother and separated from his father survived on his own.
Tzili 's first stop is in the home of a woman named Katerina. This woman an aging prostitute is alternately kind and cruel to Tzili. Tzili makes her way in Gentile surroundings by telling them that she is the child of a local prostitute who has had many illegitimate children. After Katerina becomes threatening Tzili escapes. Her next 'home' is that of two peasants . She is there severely beaten by the wife.
Tzili is simple, uncomplaining and basically innocent and good. She wins the reader's heart by her silence and courage.
Her next meeting is with a disturbed Jewish man who has escaped from a concentration camp. The story of Tzili's relation with him which leads to her knowing love for the first time, and becoming pregnant is at the heart of the book. Tzili in her relation with Mark is courageous and helpful. But in the end they are separated and she does not see him again.
Tzili goes on through more difficult circumstances. At the end of the book she is on her way to a new beginning in 'Palestina' .
In its quiet way this is a very powerful and convincing work.
Touching fable of survival.......2000-10-26
"Tzili" is the third novel of Appelfeld. Born in Rumania, with 8 years of age he escaped the Nazi work camp and managed to survive on his own in the primitive wilds of Ukraine. At the age of 14 he reached Tel Aviv where he presently resides. His work echoes Kafka to the extent that it uses the language of the absurd. He considers himself a dislocated, deported, dispossessed, and uprooted writer.
"Tzili" is a powerful narrative of an experience which is too deep to be expressed, where characters are forced to participate in a historical event they are not able to understand. The war is the background of the story, but it remains an abstract for Tzili and the reader, history becomes a fairy tale. The author assumes that the reader knows the historical facts, and his purpose is to understand the victim.
Tzili is the name of the simplest child of a poor Jewish family, devoid of charm; she is an academic failure and a disgrace for the family. She remains passive, mute, despite constant punishment and ridicule, absorbing what little she is able to in her religious education. Abandoned when war breaks out, she has the wisdom to endure a world of cruelty and physical suffering. Having to face the horror she turns empty and emotionless. Tzilil finds a lover and father of her child in a refugee by the name of Mark, who is mentally disturbed, an eccentric character among many others.
But "Tzili" is not an autobriography, as Appelfeld himself said: "the reality of the Holocaust surpassed my imagination, if I remained true to the facts, no one would believe me!" He reinterprets his childhood memories and turns them into a fablelike, dreamlike, nightmarish narrative. It is certainly a tale that leaves its footprint on the mind of the reader.

Book Description
A major feature of the rise of Islamism in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and parts of the West is the current rapid growth of a starkly repressive version of shari'a, Islamic law. In this book, noted human rights activists and scholars trace the growth of such law in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia; document its threat to the status of women, religious freedom, and democracy itself; and suggest how the rest of the world should respond. Published in cooperation with Freedom House's Center for Religious Freedom.

what about Christian fundamentalism in the US?.......2006-07-16
I love that thousand of infidels bit ... it rings a bell of something called the crusades..... it is difficult to exercise something other than cognitive conservatism for some ... with new plethora of legislative changes we are looking to lose our freedoms right here as well to Christian fundamentalism..... a very superficial book, but for those who enjoy wrangling... here here
poor title for a great book.......2005-11-18
I don't know why the author agreed to the title of this book because it is not a compendium of "radical" rules, it is a collection of Islam in its purist form. Having spent many years in countries where Islam is the real law, as opposed to the Western notions of a separation of "church" and state, this is a very well done exposition of what anyone who believes in the freedoms taken for granted in Western societies has to contend with where Islam is in control. bin Laden and his followers are not "extremists". They are not "fundamentalists". They are trying to get Islam back to the "good old days" of the 7th century. The Koran is not just another religious text that is subject to debate and discussion. It is the FINAL authority. Period. For those who cite passages of the Old Testament as examples of religious extremism, they do not understand that this "ultimate" word is the last, undisputed, and undisputable set of rules for mankind. Any dissent is a death sentence. If you don't think so, go to Saudi Arabia and try to debate the issue. Of course if you are a non Muslim, you can't go to Mecca or Medina. Sort of like not being allowed into the Vatican if you aren't a practicing Catholic.
The book does a good job of showing the world as bin Laden and his followers are killing thousands of "infidels" to get to, but we will have to learn the hard way, after many more 9/11's, as to what this means.
Sharia Shari'a Laws in Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, S.A., etc........2005-09-12
From the 2005 paper-back jacket (226 pgs): "A significant consequence of the rise of Islamism in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and other regions of the world is the rapid growth of a starkly repressive version of Islamic shari'a law, often fueled by funds and support from Saudi Arabia. Despite its importance, this worldwide growth of extreme shari'a is under-documented and little understood. Through a detailed comparative analysis of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the contributors to this timely book document its terrible effects on human rights -- especially the status of women and religious freedom -- of Muslims as well as religious minorities, and of democracy itself. This book also makes a compelling argument that such laws are a direct threat to the Western interest of advancing democracy and human rights. Democratic nations and international human rights groups lack any meaningful policy for dealing with the spread of extreme shari'a." This book "concludes with policy recommendations for the United States regarding specific countries confronting extreme shari'a. Contributors are: M. Barends: teaches law at the University of Leiden; H.F. Bella: was the director of the Sudan Human Rights Organization in Cairo; Mehrangis Kar: Iranian lawyer (Amnesty International names her a 'human rights hero' in 2002); P. Marshall: senior fellow at Freedom House's Center for Religious Freedom; P.G. Riddell: professor of the Center for Islamic Studies at the London School of Theology, Brunel University; S. Schwartz: journalist; Nina Shea: former vice-chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom; R.J. Woolsey: former director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Provides specificly identified (numbered) Shari'a laws in seven major Muslim countries. Written in a scholarly, well-researched manner; not in a "Bible thumper's" style so commonly seen from some religious institutions.

Unusual, Complicated Ideas and Recipes. Profesional Fare.......2004-10-25
The most important thing to mention about this book is that it is not a notebook. It is composed of dessert recipes, equipment tips, and sidebars on fruit ingredients made up to look like a notebook. In fact, the sidebars on fruits, however informative they happen to be, are very incongruous matched up with the `notebook' appearance of the recipes and theme of the book.
The most famous notebooks I know are those of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, where his notebooks are composed of many aphorisms. I can imagine similar notebooks of literary figures, historians, naturalists, graphic artists and journalists, and I can imagine finding these musings interesting. On the other hand, I cannot imagine finding the notebooks of scientists or cooks very interesting. Having been a practicing chemist, I can attest to the fact that the great bulk of scientific notes are simply columns of numbers and formulas. I can imagine a culinary notebook, being very similar to scientific research in that it simply repeats the same procedure over and over again varying a single aspect each time can be pretty dull. Witness the articles in `Cooks Illustrated' where we are not presented with all the details, only the summary of dozens of attempts at achieving the best recipe. But then, I am pretty sure that only professional philosophers read Wittgenstein's notebooks.
In this book and in his more conventional book, `Essential Cuisine', the author makes much of his wanderings through the countryside of his native region of France, Aubrac, which is in the southwestern hills, about a hundred miles inland from the Bay of Biscay and Bayonne and Bordeaux. At least it is voice from a new region, neither Lyon nor Provence. The introduction cites how the author Michal Bras roams about the countryside noting flavors and scents. But there is the rub. How do you put scents of acacia flowers, chicory roots and white pine needles in a notebook. I guess this is the opening which make room for the little monographs on fruits. Believe it or not, the author actually does give recipes including acacia and chicory. Oddly enough, there are no little monographs on these two ingredients. And, the order of the ingredients monographs seem to show very little rhyme or reason. It would seem to make sense to put all the citrus monographs together, but they are not. The monographs are also a very odd mix of information, certainly different from a naturalist's observations of the fruits in situ as you may expect to find in a notebook. The pieces contain an assortment of information on geographical distribution, history, and care in using, as with the little tidbit of washing blueberries in vinegar to ward against fox piss. But I go on too much about the fruity notes.
All the recipes are complete, albeit somewhat shorter than what you may expect. Most of the recipes are difficult and many of the recipes require a long time to prepare. And, the author states that fact clearly at the beginning of each recipe. On top of all this, the instructions for some of the long and difficult recipes are rather terse. Bras' recipe for the famous `La Buche de Noel' or Christmas Log is not much more than a single page of text plus a single hand-drawn illustration. Nick Malgieri's instructions for the same cake in `Perfect Pastry' takes at least two pages. Other presentations I have seen take longer, with many pictures.
This is not to say this is a `bad' book. Most of what this means is that the audience for this book may only be professional pastry chefs and very serious amateur foodies and bakers who like to experiment with unusual ingredients and unusual preparations, molds, and ingredients like acacia flowers and chicory. The combination of unusual ingredients, long prep times, and professional level skills means this book is not for the average bake sale matron. On the other hand, even if you are not a professional or even an active amateur baker, this book does offer a window into a world of desserts you may just not see outside of some very special shops in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Brussels, or Lyon... or in the Aubrac. In spite of the many long and difficult recipes, there are several, especially in the chapter `Basic Recipes' which will give the inventive pastry amateur a lot of interesting ideas. There are the usual recipes for frangipanes and Italian meringue, but there are also interesting recipes for Fouace Dough, caramelized phyllo leaves, and a short crust pastry dough with duck fat.
The chapter on fruit desserts offers a lot of interesting tarts with roasted fruits, nut creams, and quinquina (whatever that is). The chapter on pastries has interesting cake recipes, mousselines, pralines, and preparations with one of his favorite unusual ingredients, milk skin.
The chapter on ice cream may be more interesting than most books. Just be careful not to be taken in by the `instant' ice cream recipes. They are unusual in their use of whipped cream and fresh toasted bread crumb to get the fluff of ice cream, but they do require that the preparation spend several hours in the fridge and they also require the use of an ice cream maker.
The book requires several European ingredients such as black and blond sugar. I suspect blond sugar is what we would call light brown sugar and black sugar may be an especially dark `dark brown sugar', but the book does not clear that up for us Yanks. I was totally baffled when one recipe called for the cook to measure the relative density of sugar syrup. I know how this is done, but I have never seen a device for doing this in any kitchen supply source.
Recommended to professionals, adventuresome pastry hobbyists, and foodies bored with the average book on French cookery.
Book Description
This book and its companion volume are the first in English to survey the entire range of Scandinavian glass companies and designers. Their beautiful glass has spawned one of the hottest collecting fields today. The volumes are divided by color, with the dark tones of Smoke and the clear crystal of Ice included in this book. Each volume has hundreds of color photographs chronicling the creations that arose out of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway. Together these nations were responsible for producing some of the most extraordinary glass of the 20th century. Here is the high quality designer glass produced by skilled teams of glassmakers working at Orrefors, Kosta, iittala, Nuutajarvi, Riihimaki, Hadeland, Strombergshyttan, and Johansfors led in technical virtuosity and design innovation. Designers such as Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Vicke Lindstrand, Edward Hald, Nanny Still, Erik Hoglund, and dozens of others contributed more to 20th-century factory glass production than any group outside of Italy. With detailed captions, signatures and labels, company histories, designer biographies, a comprehensive bibliography, index, and price guide, this book along with its companion volume Fire & Sea will surely become the standard reference on Scandinavian glass and essential for collectors, dealers, researchers, curators, and anyone interested in modern design.

Great ideas for someone on a tight budget. I bought this and gave it to my cousin who is going to college. Perfect gift for the graduate... great ideas for dorms/first apartments! :)
Easy-to-read and easy-to-use.......2006-06-26
I loved the book! There are lots of good tips and pointers, and for people like me who don't know how to do some home projects, the instructions were easy to follow and easy to use.
I ended up buying 3 copies - one for me and two to give away to friends! Totally encourage you to check this out.
The only problem is she didn't write it 12 years ago!.......2006-06-15
This is the book I wish I'd had when I was just starting out on my own, and the book I wish I'd thought to write after moving house about 10 times since I first started college!
Yee-Fan does a great job of fitting all kinds of information into this book, and speaks in a voice that is easy to read but not patronizing to first-time renters. She's been there, done that, and wants to pass all that she's learned, good and bad, on to you!
Everyone has lived in the white cardboard-box style apartment, and signed the lease that says "no painting, no restoration, no personality." This book has a TON of ways to get around all that and really make a rental your own. Once you read this book from cover to cover, you can satisfy your need for more by culling through countless articles on the website.
I'll be buying a copy for every person I know that moves out on their own.
Excellent for budget-minded decorators!.......2006-05-09
First, let me start by saying that I thought there would be more pictures in this book. I'm very visual and that's usually what drives me to buy decorating books. But that alone did not distract me, and since it's mentioned numerous times in the book that the author is also the editor of Digsmagazine.com, I can pop in there to augment all the great information in this book.
Usually books about decorating, which is such a visual thing to begin with, have lots of pictures and very little text. If there is a lot of text in the book, it's usually pretty boring and hard to stay focused. Not so with this book. Yee-fan Sun's style of writing is very conversational and easy to read. The best part is that unlike other books on budget decorating or appealing to the newly free, she takes into consideration that many of us on a budget are renting and usually aren't allowed to make changes to our pads. Yee-fan provides plenty of easy, inexpensive, and temporary ways to inject personality into the cookie cutter apartments that we live in. Since she's lived all over the world on a starving student's budget, Yee-fan really knows what she's talking about.
It's a lot of reading, but if you want to give your place a huge dose of personality without blowing the budget, this is the book for you!
look cool for cheap.......2006-02-12
Yee-fan really knows what she is talking about... too many style books offer great ideas, but their idea of a "budget" includes $200 pillows. Buy this book for amazing style on a realistic budget!

Very chic.......2007-06-01
A handy little guide for your first apartment. It takes you step by step through what you need (versus what you might want) for each room. Has some clever ideas and a chic and simple aesthetic. Would make a great gift.
An essential manual for a new apartment or house.......2005-08-10
I'd give this book to a college grad on his/her start in the real world for a new apartment or to anyone on the hunt for a new apartment or home. First home (FHS) is loaded with ideas on how to dine, live, relax and work in your space. I like the scrapbook look showing "what you'll need" and "what you'll want." The "Style Quiz" which made me raise an eyebrow of its relevance to my style ended up been quite accurate in the results of what look I go for in my home. FHS is a great find . . . I wish I bought it earlier but better late than never.
First homebuyers essentials.......2004-12-14
I pretty much went off the only review. Purchasing our first home (condo) I enjoyed their suggestions. Most of the furniture in the book seems to come out of an ikea catalogue. If you've just purchased your new home and own much of nothing this book is a great guide. Especially if your on a strict budget and can't afford much.
Great Book for New Apartment or House.......2004-10-21
Whether you're moving into your first apartment or buying your first house, this book provides many ideas and tips for making it easier.
The book has a nice layout and beautiful photos, although the decorating styles tend to lean toward a combination of Ikea and Pottery Barn. It mainly focuses on ideas and options for budget-conscious decorators.
I like it that it FHS is helpful for both new apartment renters and new house owners. For the apartment dweller, there are handy room-by-room checklists for things you need and want; and for house owners, it covers just about everything for beginning your decorating challenges. The first chapter gives advice on "Where to Begin" and offers lots of good planning and budgeting advice. The book also advises on furniture buying and room layouts.
Throughout FHS, the authors and designers take the following factors into consideration:
*Your style change over time so remember that when you're planning your decor.
*Most people have mixed styles, not just one that fits into a category such as modern or country.
*Readers are encouraged to create both a place to work (i.e. office) and a place to relax. I like it that they emphasized the importance of this.
*Most of the projects presented look easy to do.
*It emphasizes using all our senses when decorating: what the room smells like, music, texture, etc.
There are only a few things that I didn't like. One thing I found odd is that it recommended dining in bed if you don't have a kitchen table. I'm sure they could have come up with a better idea than that. Another is the advice to repaint your whole house in white before doing anything else to "visualize your color ideas." That seems like a lot of work! Also, like most decorating books and magazines, they don't show TV's in the living room. That always seemed bizarre to me. What home doesn't have a TV and why is it suggested that it should be hidden or very tiny sitting on a bookshelf?
Then there's the "Style Quiz". It isn't helpful, but might be fun for people who like to take quizzes. Here's one of the questions to help you find your decorating style:
"You have time for only one TV show this week. Which will it be? a) West Wing b) CSI c) Survivor d) Jackass."
Huh? I have no idea what that's supposed to tell me!
Overall, First Home Style is pretty good and I would recommend it to the new apartment or house dweller.

Book Description
He was the Sultan of Swoon, Ol' Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, and above all: The Voice. In a career that spanned more than six decades, Frank Sinatra made his presence felt in music, film, television and even politics--and this pictorial biography captures every dimension of Sinatra's amazing life. There he is, in Hoboken, New Jersey, as a child; with his very first singing group; touring with Tommy Dorsey's band; being greeted by throngs of screaming fans; and making movies such as From Here to Eternity and The Man with the Golden Arm. Sinatra is shown in the recording studio; on stage and off, in family portraits and side-by-side with both starlets and presidents. From his performances in New York's Paramount Theater to his days with his "Rat Pack" buddies, this tribute to a transcendent entertainer is something no Sinatra fan will want to miss.

Book Description
From Hoboken to Hollywood, Frank Sinatra was always a larger-than-life package of talent, charisma, and controversy. Singers had been big before, but there had never been a sensation like the young Sinatra. He drove the women wild, then drove his career into the ground. He lived a life of monumental drama and intrigue: Was there truth to the mob rumors? (Some.) Were the suicide attempts over Ava Gardner real? (One of them was.) Did he really split with Jack Kennedy over something as small as a snub? (Sure he did.) And then: the ferocious comeback that secured his status as an icon of the highest order; one of the towering figures of the American century.
And then: the ferocious comeback that secured his status as an icon of the highest order-one of the towering figures of the American century. "Nobody's ever been a bigger star than me," Sinatra said as a young man. "This'll never end." Well, it has, finally, for him. But for those of us left behind, there is the incomparable music. And the movies. And now, thanks to these pictures and reminiscences from the editors of LIFE, vivid memories of the extraordinary life and times of Francis Albert Sinatra.
Customer Reviews:
Sinatra in pictures...need I say more?.......2002-04-23
They say a picture's worth a thousand words. Well, the pictures in this book are worth millions. Some are in black and white and others are in color but ALL portray Frank Sinatra as he was - without the sugar coating. The pictures gave me a whole new take on Sinatra's life. I found out things I never knew before about his personality, his devotion to his music, his late night parties and his temper. I recommend this book to anyone, not just Sinatra fans, who wants to get an insight on this legend's life through the beautiful photos of Life magazine.
