Book Description

1 out of 5 stars Terriblemente desilusionante.......2005-12-08

Book Description

In 24 never-before-seen paintings, best-selling fantasy artist Brian Froud interprets the ancient and mystical runes of Celtic and European origin through Elfland, a world of faeries and myth. Each painting is inspired by a specific rune, richly symbolic and potent icons open to infinite interpretations. In the hands of the exceptional folklorist and poet Ari Berk, the secret meanings of these runes are revealed and their power is made manifest. In the pages of this book a single symbol provides the visual key to a host of mythic stories, lands, and adventures. By using the runes and Froud's paintings as tools to explore both the "seen" and the "unseen" world, readers of The Runes of Elfland will be inspired to reimagine their own lives and tell their own tales. Both storybook and oracle, Runes of Elfland provides a wellspring of personal insight for the Froud fan and the Faery aficionado.

4 out of 5 stars The kind of stories that don't exist anymore........2005-11-23

Let's face it, the majority of stories we tell each other these days is nothing but gossip. Gone are the days of fables and poems and limericks. Stories like this are considered bedtime rituals for kids rather than something important that we can learn from.

Brian Froud and Ari Berk team up in this book to deliver 24 stories (some short, some long) based on ancient culture, each one with a twist in the tale and the meaning of of it laid out afterwards. A runic code is also featured for every one, that takes a few minutes to unravel. But once you get familiar with the Key, it'll be easier for you.

Some of these stories are easy to identify with, but some are really out there. Since Berk has a degree in Modern, Classic and Medieval English Literature you can expect him to have pretty diverse writing skills. All of the stories may be set in the same world but you'll never know where he'll go in the next one.

Froud's paintings are definitely interesting and vivid, but I'd be hard-pushed to call them beautiful. Some are so abstract and weird that I could look at it for ages and still not fully understand it's point.

It took quite a while to get through this book. A lot of patience is needed to decipher the codes and I'm not the kind of guy who can read several different fables in one night. It does make for a good bedtime read for kids and adults though. But I wouldn't expect many children to appreciate the book at all.

4 out of 5 stars great book but..........2005-04-25

it has less correlation to traditional runes that i would have liked. For instance, the traditional futhark order isn't observed, nor are the traditional names of the runes given. However, the pictures and stories are wonderful, and the book lends a new and creative perspective to runework which is at once easy to understand and very cryptic.

5 out of 5 stars The magic of storytelling is reborn here.......2004-11-12

This book is a series of fantastic retellings of old stories of myth that are associated with the runic alphabet of Northern European prehistory. The Rune of Protection, for instance, is a retelling of "The Waking of Angantyr" from the Elder Edda. All these associative stories are incorporated into a mystical world known as "Elf-Land", both illuminated by Dr. Berk and envisioned by the reknowned fantasy artist, Brian Froud (most known for his book "Faeries" and having done conceptual art for the Jim Henson movies "Labyrinth" and "Dark Crystal")

I've had the pleasure of being a student in several of Dr. Berk's classes at Central Michigan University, and I can say that his way of looking at the world through the folklore of generations has profoundly changed my own view. It is great seeing his vision of the world on the printed page, and complimented so beautifully by the illustrations of Mr. Froud, who is a good friend of his and a current collaborator.

This book is a must-have for both lovers of fantasy and of folklore. It has many profound teachings by ways of courtesy in the realm of nature and the invisible world of Faerie, brought forth excellently by Dr. Berk's unique language.

For a closer look at Berk and Froud's somewhat eccentric "academic" relationship, check out "Goblins!" which was released in Nov. 2004. It is a new volume in the Lady Cottington series, under a sort of Faerie ethnological study of those pesky creatures that cause us so much woe.

5 out of 5 stars Myth that goes to the bone.......2004-03-13

What can I say? On one page I held my breath. On another, I lost it. One page left me in tears, the longing and the recognition were so poignant. When I went to look for that page again, I couldn't find it, like the gold under the rainbow. It will happen to you. At some point you'll discover the page that haunts your dreams, describes your world, or makes you smile.

Ari Berk's exquisitely informed text and Froud's always extraordinary pictures combine to open the world you know is there but have forgotten how to see. The runes, charms, and stories delineate the bargains, the sorrows, and the treasures of the journey.

Get this book. Get copies for your friends. If you've ever heard the voices under your bed and wanted to know their names, or wept at a sunset for no reason, or considered walking through the door at the back of the wardrobe, just in case--get this book. They're playing your song.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for "The Runes of Elfland".......2004-03-13

In the Age of Technology, it is a testament to myth's eternal power to inspire that a book like "The Runes of Elfland" by Brian Froud and Dr. Ari Berk has come into being. At once whimsical, passionate, solemn, and joyful, each page is a gift, a fresh breeze that blows across the mind and takes the reader to a special place uncorrupted by that which is easily acquired and jealously owned.

Myth and runes are owned by no one; they are tools by which we can escape into the unexplored corners of our minds, and one could want for no better guides than Froud and Berk. The point and counterpoint of the work is exquisitely displayed as you turn each page and presents something certain to affect everyone who looks at the book, if even for a moment.

As always, there is darkness and sensuality in even the most innocent picture, as Froud's faeries peer out from the corners of the pages, yet even the most sinister picture has some measure of beauty. Berk's words are soaring poetry, written with a deft touch that presents a deep scholarship in mythic conventions without being pretentious or pontifical.

While the book claims to be nothing more than, as Berk says, "a process of seeing, listening, and remembering," this is expert and elegant storytelling that respects the reader and the material. In fact, it is even more because through these words and images, we gain (or re-gain) the power to appreciate not only the "landscapes in [our] memory," but the land itself. No matter your spiritual orientation, there is something to be gained and cherished from the journey you take each time you open this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Conclusion to "A Song Called Youth" Trilogy.......2001-06-02

John Shirley shines once more, in the riveting conclusion of his "A Song Called Youth" trilogy. After being discredited in the United States, the Second Alliance makes its final stand in Europe. About to unleash genocide as it tries to unite Western Europe under its Christian Fundamentalist Fascism, only the New Resistance (NR) stands in its way. And high in Earth orbit, the NR's chief financial sponsor has his own sinister plans for humanity. Again, Shirley delivers the goods with his fine, fast-paced lyrical prose. Without a doubt, his "A Song Called Youth" trilogy is one of the classics of cyberpunk literature.

He will astound you with his words and wisdom and you will feel blessed by the writings of a young peacemaker. His books should be required reading by all!

5 out of 5 stars A HUMBLE PEACEMAKER WHO WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HEART.......2002-10-20

Mattie Stepanak is a self-proclaimed peacemaker. His words of wisdom cover a myriad of subjects ranging from the tragic deaths of his older siblings to his own daily challenges and successes living with a rare form of muscular dystrophy.

This boy speaks the wisdom of the ages. He has said that he is a peacemaker and I believe he is. His work reflects deep thoughts on current events and pleas for people to reach into their own hearts and minds and follow their individual heartsongs. A "heartsong," as this young man has so eloquently defined, is any calling or core beliefs that guide, direct and shape one's thinking. Mattie has a flair for natural expression and the rhythm of his words flow smoothly and naturally. He is just as fluent, brilliant and well versed verbally. I like the way he has said that instead of bombs, "have a war with words" and "you don't need weapons." He is right.

Mattie's role model of choice is former President Carter because in his words, Carter is a humble peacemaker. Mattie, like Carter has championed causes and has done a lot to promote peace and reason. Mattie has certainly been a voice of comfort and inspiration for many.

This book might make you cry, but it is so worth reading. You will love Mattie. He really is a peacemaker.

If you like the magazine Bon Appetit, you'll love this compilation of the recipes that appeared there in 2000. The pictures are beautiful, but the focus is on the food. The recipes include very complex gourmet dishes and relatively simple recipes for daily cooking. Every one I have tried has been easy to follow and has yielded delicious results. There are interesting hints and factoids scattered throughout the book, and it is very well indexed.

SHE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT SHE WAS DEAD.

When Shari Cooper awoke at home after being at her girlfriend's birthday party, her family acted like she wasn't there. They didn't hear a thing she said. They wouldn't even look at her. Then the call came from the hospital. Her father and brother paled. Her mother started to cry. Shari didn't know what was wrong. Not until she followed them to the hospital. There she found herself lying on a cold slab in the morgue. The police said that it was suicide.

Shari knew she had been murdered. Making a vow to herself to find her killer, Shari embarks on the strangest of all criminal investigations: one in which she spies on her friends, and even enters their dreams -- where she comes face-to-face with a nightmare from beyond the grave. The Shadow -- a thing more horrible than death itself -- is the key to Shari's death, and the only thing that can stop her murderer from murdering again.

5 out of 5 stars A book you read over and over and over again.......2007-08-27

I've read this book at least 4 times already...and I'm not sick of it at all. I first read it when I was about 14 and now I'm 19 and the book STILL interests me. The character development was good but not GREAT; there were some people who he could've expanded more on, but overall an excellent novel for not only teens, but adults as well.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Must!.......2007-08-24

I read many Christopher Pike books when i was a kid and loved them all. Remember me is one that has stayed in my head forever. I'm finally getting it for my oldest. I know she's going to love it as well!

5 out of 5 stars BEST Christopher Pike book written.......2007-05-03

Shari Cooper is dead. She's a ghost who's trying to figure out who killed her and why. It's a murder mystery, filled with a handful of great characters. No one can see her, but she does have help.

I've been a Christopher Pike fan since I was ~11 yrs. old, and now being 26, I would read it again. Actually, I had lost the book several years back, so I bought it off an online auction recently. I had read this book about 5 times literally. From cover to cover, the story is PERFECTION. I could not put the book down. It keeps you from the edge of your seat, and the characters are so well put together and are unique in their own way. The story is entertaining, yet at the same time, meaningful... profound. You can tell Pike put good work and thought to the character's personalities as well as how they interrelate with each other. Shari Cooper, the main character who is a ghost - has a likeable personality. I liked her as I read along. Other than it being suspenseful, it goes beyond our realm and ties in with science fiction, black holes, space, teleportation... wow-- AND I guarantee it is NOT AT ALL CORNY whatsoever. The book is also rather deep as Pike entails love, sacrifice, mystery, twists, and spirituality. I remember there are a few funny moments and it will make you laugh out loud. I love this book so much!! I swear they can make a movie out of it, and would do very well! Remember me part II and III are not as great - as sequels are sometimes. I thought Remember Me III was just mm.. OK. This is a suspenseful, fun, meaningful, happy, sad, intriguing, deep, funny book. You get everything wrapped into one. You will not be disappointed. From loving it since I was 11, and writing a review about it 15 yrs later really made a lasting impression on me. Go read it, you'll like it.

                    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't stop reading.......2007-03-19

I read this book fifteen years ago when I was 13 years old. I couldn't stop reading it. I loved it so much that I read it too many times to remember. "Remember Me" was the first Christopher Pike book that I read, and I immediately became hooked on his work. I ended up reading most of his books, and this is the best one.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to get introduced to Christopher Pike.......2007-02-22

I read this book about 17 years ago when I was 12, and it was my first Christopher Pike book. After that, I was hooked. For the next six years, I read every book of his I could get my hands on, many two or three times. Pike has such a sophisticated style unmatched by other young adult authors, such as R.L. Stine. Pike knows what teens want to read about: mystery, murder, romance and sex. His books all have that, along with great and innovative story lines. I think I will dig through my parent's basement for my collection and read them over! I am sure I would still enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars Remember Me : Women & Their Friendship Quilts.......2001-07-27

There is something about friendship quilts that touches our hearts. Seeing those names from the past we wonder about these people. What were they like? What were their lives like? Linda Otto Lipsett wondered too and that wondering became this book. In "Remember Me" , she tells the stories of seven women and their friendship quilts. Along with the women's stories are beautiful pictures of their quilts as well as great old photographs of the women and their times. In order to write this book Lipsett interviewed numerous relatives and others who remembered these woman. Through the stories in this book we become aware of what it was like to be a woman during the times when these quilts were made. Somehow reading these stories written on such a personal level makes their lives so very real.

5 out of 5 stars A Quilt is More Than Cloth and Thread.......2000-09-17

This book will intrigue any reader interested in American history, quilts, or the art of the human soul. A book is more than paper and ink, as a quilt is more than cloth and thread. Lipsett illuminates the lives of women who worked the names of loved ones and pieced together patches of remembrances into treasured friendship quilts. Historically the lives of the women were often fraught with hardship and deprivation. This book shares the beauty and joy these women created in the form of friendship quilts. For many women of the era, the quilts they left behind were the only concrete evidence that they ever existed. The cameo biographies bring the reader into the lives of these women. The photos and explanations emphasize the significance quilts have played in the lives of people. A wonderful book.
