How to read this book:
Cut each of the 240 pages exactly in half with an exacto blade.
Read the top (or bottom) half of any page combined with the bottom (or top)half of any other page.
Write a review lauding the "originality" of this book.

Example, bottom of page 159:
"Although one of the popes made Galileo take back every word he said, as well.
Meantime my period and I still remain no distance at all from each other, presumably.
Well, or the pain in my left shoulder and I, similarly.
Perhaps I have not mentioned the pain in my left shoulder.
I have mentioned it."

Page 108, top:
"Although some few happened to be of the Via Vittorio Veneto, which is almost directly below the Borghese Gallery.
The reverse of that statement being equally true, by the way.
Now that I think about it, I may have worn that soccer shirt all the way to Paris, even.
Doubtless I stopped sitting on the other shirts after the rest of my own garments dried, however."

Anyone who claims to have read this book in any other fashion - sequentially from the first to the last page, for example - is lying.

This is one of those stories that falls into the Big Two-Hearted River genre of stories, where what the characters are not thinking about is more important than the action on the page. For instance, the world has ended, and it is not directly stated how it has become devoid of people (but I think we all know). What does populate the narrator's thought are the biographies of the great artists of history. Is it possible to lead a meaningful life interacting only with dead history? This book makes an argument that yes, it can be done, but it will be no less tragic than a life with the living. The accomplishment of this book is that it almost convinces us that such a life may be no less rewarding.

This is not a review.
Years back, a reviewer said about Richard Brautigan that he wrote books that college sophmores aspire to write.
Have I read much Brautigan? I believe he committed suicide in Eastern Montana.
Well, maybe not Eastern Montana after all, though if you're standing on the Montana/South Dakota border, there is no Eastern Montana.
Or did I mean the Montana/North Dakota border? I'm not sure sometimes though my guess is that it's the one without the rock faces.
Rock faces. That makes for a difficult transition to this, the next in this long series of mysterious utterences.
But this is just the text. What about the subtext? That too is eerily eerie.
Even eerily eerier is Mannheim's "contemoraneity of the non-contemporaneous."
Or, that we're uncertain who decided that punctuation is inserted into quoted text within the "quotation marks";
That is the exception.
In my life thus far exceptions have not proven the rule.
I am mad. I am crazy.
Yesterday I died but returned in time to write this.
"In time." What a fatuous concept. I enjoy the word "fatuous." It is that most self-referential of things: fatuousness.
I am dizzy with fatuousness. I am Mark's son.
I am a sophmore.

Original and inspiring, I find myself thinking about this book more and more since reading it.

While I didn't find this book difficult, as others wrote, I think there's a dichotomy within it that contributes to that response.

I think this:

Markson wrote one book, a "philosophical novel," if there were such a genre--the novel demonstrates, rather than describes, a philosophy--and in so doing, he utilized more information than just the plot, the style, and the philosophy itself; this information becomes a sort of second book.

And I think the latter, the information that the narrator repeatedly discuses, are the "difficult" or perhaps simply "different" elements than the essence of the novel itself.

A woman is alone. She tells us, in the first sentence, she is alone on the earth ("At the beginning I left notes.") For me, there was a driving force to the plot - is this woman really alone, and to what extent? Is she alone in her house, holed up from trauma, or alone in her mind, "mad," as she phrases it - though she claims she has had periods of madness, not that she *is* mad. I found this plot elemnt a mystery, and I was driven, as such, to find out the ending or "truth."

The other element of the book is the substance itself, what she writes--thinks about--and the way she writes it. This, I think, is where a reader can become tired (I saw reviews say it should have been shorter, though this is quite a short book) or wander from the material.

The narrator talks a lot about ancient Greece, mythology, classical music, and limited-in-scope literature and art. Her focus is on "high art," or certain pieces of, but not all readers will be interested enough in Helen of Troy or in Brahms to find her musings compelling. They can be at odds with the other compelling part, the plot.

So, I think Markson has, in some way, two books. One is his plot/philosophical-novel and the other is the monologue of Kate, the narrator. I, too, perked up at times she did things near the beach house she lives - go for water, explore a neighboring house - and though I was/am interested in Helen, mythology, and literature, her musings were both limited in scope and each topic disproportionately covered. This would happen if any person's inner thoughts were put to paper - I may find Helen interesting, but classical music not so interesting.

Where I think the novel fails to keep the interest of readers is in the disparity between her life (Markson's philosophical demonstration) and her personal interests.

That said, for all my lack of interest in Brahms, et. al., there was an inevitable connection to her world - were there one or two copies of the book about Brahms? Did she burn one in a fire? Did she read it? Was it a children's book?

I was riveted. I too skimmed parts, as others said, as there was just so much about topics not of interest to me. But, no sooner did I begin to skim, than I was reeled back in. The book is fascinating. Its execution nearly brilliant. If I may nit-pick, Markson's excessive use of the word "doubtless" drove me nuts. In character or not, it was too much, to the point of distraction and detraction.

Last, I'll repeat what others have, the structure of each page, paragraph and sentence was wonderful. One-, two-sentence paragraphs, tangents of thought and reversal of thought, and her unreliable narration - contradiction of earlier things said, etc.

I found the end heartbreaking, and reread the last line a few times to be sure of my interpretation what I'd read. It was fully unexpected; it didn't read as the jolt I'd expected but, upon thought, it was one.

Riveting. Now, to figure out which Markson book to try next.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful story, but could have been much shorter.......2004-01-21

The commentary on lonliness is well done, but I found the endless cultural references tedious. I also didn't think that the roundabout connections created made much difference to the story itself. Definitely recommended but with the caveat that it requires mucho endurance to slog through the references.

      Book Description

It is good to be home.It is good to hear the wind of Icewind Dale, to feel its invigorating bite, like some reminder that I am alive.

      The Dark Elf

When the mark of the great warhammer Aegis-fang is found branded on the back of a vicious outlaw, Drizzt can no longer merely hope that Wulfgar is safe. The dark elf and his companions set out to find the barbarian once and for all. As they discover pieces of the puzzle their friend's life has become, Drizzt grows only more determined to locate him.

      The Barbarian

As his friends search for him, Wulfgar sails with Captain Deudermont in search of the stolen Aegis-fang, now in the hands of the vile pirate Sheila Kree. But the pirate isn't willing to sit around waiting to be caught. She has other plans.

Drizzt, Cattie-brie, Regis, Bruenor, and Wulfgar -- the Companions of the Hall -- come together for the first time since The Silent Blade in a reunion filled with discovery and adventure.

The paperback version of a top-selling hardcover featuring the return of Drizzt Do'Urden, R.A. Salvatore's most popular character.

      5 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2007-02-14

I don't understand. The plots in these books aren't very different from each other, the fight scenes go on too long and it's another "group of friends go adventuring book". Nothing original or anything here.

The problem is that I LOVE these books! RAS makes me care about the characters and what happens to them. Watching Drizzt evolve as a character is fascinating. Drizzt is the most evolving character I've ever seen in fiction. It's amazing. His relationship with Cattie-Brie keeps me at the edge of my seat.

I do find myself skipping over some of the more lengthy fight scenes, but other than that I'm hooked.

I don't particularly care about Wulfgar at all, but when the focus is on him I find that I do care. Same with Bruenor and Regis.

      I just don't understand...

3 out of 5 stars Sea of Mediocrity.......2006-10-21

The first half of the book is pretty good actually, focusing more on Wulfgar being affected still by the tortures of Errtu. He becomes a liability on Deudermont's Sea Sprite with Robillard and Deudermont arguing over what to do with him. As they pursue pirates looking for Sheila Kree, we actually get some tension as Kree sends a team to kidnap Wulfgar's new woman and adopted child.

Then the tension is ratcheted downwards. Rather than have the supreme tension of Kree holding hostages as well as Aegis Fang, the kidnap attempt fails. Drizz't, Cattie-Brie, Regis and Bruenor go north in search of Kree and perhaps Wulfgar. At this point we have a very bad technical lapse on Salvatore's part. Wizard Robillard is used more than once as the hand of the author to move Wulfgar around. First to prod him to find his friends and Kree, and secondly to actually teleport Wulfgar to his friends, and then scout Kree's hideout for them. Yeeesh, you get the sense the story had to be wrapped up quickly so the convenient wizard was used to move it along.

On the good side, Drizz't and Cattie-Brie finally move towards some sort of relationship with glacial slowness and there are some nice fight scenes, though the last one with the companions vs. The Entire Pirate Crew & Ogre Friends is a little unbelievable. The mysterious elf sub-plot is wrapped up very quickly and easily. The book should probably have been longer to address these problems.

Not as strong as the previous two which dealt with character issues and political intrigue, and a definite step back to predictable dungeon romps. At the end, everyone is back together almost as if the reset button has been hit.

      1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-07-10

It really would have been better had this novel not been written at all and we could strike it from the Drizzt series. The plot of the story is completely contrite and childish and you get more of the same old predictable Drizzt as we've had since The Silent Blade.

1 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Books RAS Has Ever Written.......2006-07-09

There was a time when RAS used to be one of the most enthralling writers in the Fantasy genre. Now he's become stale, he rehashes old plots, and all of the main characters are invincible.

The plot in Sea Swords has absolutely no validity to anything in the series.

One can only hope that RAS can revert back to his older style. And let's hope that happens sometime soon.

1 out of 5 stars Author is too preoccupied to teach writing.......2003-05-22

This incomplete book is not as much help as it could be. If you are looking for a good book on craft. Look elsewhere. I suggest the books of John Gardner, Gardner Dozois and Damon Knight as better places to start.

1 out of 5 stars unfortunate waste of money and trees.......2003-05-22

The author is more self-possesed of foisting her feminist ideology on would-be writers than she is of helping them to become writers. It is far better to take advice real editors/professionals like Gardner Dozois, Damon Knight or John Gardner (who all have published books on craft) than to read this overly preachy book. The book is condecending and downright insulting to the readers and writers of Science Fiction in that it assumes that we are all lazy, twinkie-munching, television. Don't waste your money on this one. There is so much that is better out there!

1 out of 5 stars discusses little that is useful.......2001-03-01

Although the book has an inspiring title, it hardly ammounts to much of anything. It fails to discuss conflict, plot, and other aspects of narrative that are fundamental to "creating" any novel. There is some broad discussion of how to think about about the physical and the social and political environment of your novel, but this discussion is not deep enough for someone who has not studied in depth subjects like politics, science, history, etc to be able to really think of the issues on his own.

        5 out of 5 stars Start thinking.......2000-05-15

Melissa Scott starts the book off with "A brief defense of science fiction, or why does someone who went to Harvard write this stuff anyway?" - and the book takes off. Even though the book is less than 200 pages long she covers important points of world building, characters, research, ideas and provides suggestions for getting published.

5 out of 5 stars The Zen of Catholicism, part II.......2006-09-22

This is one book which I can't find adequate words to describe. Still I would give it 10 stars if I could. Dr. Biela presents the works and thoughts of the great Catholic mystics (St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Faustina Kowalska, etc.) in language that a 21st century reader can grasp. In addition he takes key New Testament passages with Jesus' words and elaborates on them so vividly that readers can easily recognize situations in our daily lives where those words are applicable. Not a day goes by where something I have read in these books does not come to mind.

Needless to say Dr Biela's series of books has given me a radically different perspective as to what closeness to God means, and how God acts in our lives. Basically, we are nothing and God in us is and does everything. We come to this realization by removing the blinders in our lives which impede us from seeing this truth. Events which appear adverse to us can in fact be God's instrument to remove obstacles that separate us from Him. More than ever I seek to recognize how everything I do and everything that happens to me is God's action.

I could try to go on but, again, no words of mine "suffice". Read it and prepare to be overwhelmed.

5 out of 5 stars GOD is in the events.......2004-07-13

When I first saw the cover of this book I had to step back and let it sink in - how was GOD in the event of the tragic 9/11? The book does not go into the events of 9/11, but the book spelled out for me how the only true reliance is GOD and everything else, everybody else, will fall short of my deepest desires for unconditional love. This book, in a very succinct way, shows the distinction between the Creator and His creatures/creations. I found it extremely inspiring and hopeful. It has really helped me to see things in a new way - even such tremendously tragic things as 9/11.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!.......2004-05-14

God Alone Suffices is a book that everyone longing to deepen his/her relationship with God will want to read. The author "contextualizes" the "eternal" spirituality of John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and Therese of Lisieux, making their teachings accessible to all who live in the 21st century. Our human tendency to create "illusory reliances" (material, psychological and spiritual), the ways in which we experience their breakdown in our lives, and steps that we can take to move toward making God our sole reliance are analyzed by the author in a readable but profound manner. A radical understanding of sin which reaches to the very depths of our being is maintained throughout, even as the author successfully encourages us never to lose hope. This book is a must for everyone!!

5 out of 5 stars God Alone Suffices.......2004-04-08

This book along with the Families of Nazareth Movement have changed my life! My life, and my spiritual journey, were at a stand still until I started reading this book, and faith sharing with the Families of Nazareth Movement. I can see that God is in everything that happens in my life, and more importantly, I regonize my sinfulness and am aware of God's abundant Mercy. This fact is so important because it keeps me from entering, or staying in despair. When things are going wrong I know that God is present in even the worst situations. If I accept the graces God can use all situations as a tool toward my sanctification. All three of the books are a must read for anyone who wants to go deeper on the journey toward union with God.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-12-31

This book is the beginning of a deep conversion in my life. I am guessing I am not the only one. If you care about your soul, I recommend this book. All Christians will be able to come to a deeper knowledge of faith through this book!

If, like so many other gardeners the world over, you're enamored of Dan Hinkley's Heronswood Nursery catalog, you'll love the Explorer's Garden. Heronswood is a wildly successful nursery in Kingston, Washington, that offers many of the most beautiful and unusual plants available anywhere. My guess is that once The Explorer's Garden is read through for pleasure, it will be used over and over again as a supplement to the catalog, as it thoroughly describes the plants Hinkley offers at Heronswood, and offers information on how best to grow them.

The Explorer's Garden is part sheer adventure, part the story of Hinkley's intense love and appreciation for the flora of Planet Earth. While fascinating for the botanist with its tales of plants growing in their native habitats at the far corners of the world, The Explorer's Garden also satisfies the gardener by emphasizing which plants are most garden-worthy. Out of the many masterworts (Astrantia) now available, Hinkley tells us that the cultivar known as "Margery Fish" or "Shaggy" is one of the best of the lot. He sorts through the virtues of the many hardy geraniums, distinguishing G. sylvaticum "Amy Doncaster" for its deep-blue upturned flowers with white eyes; he calls G. phaeum exceptional for its striking, purple-blotched foliage. This is just the kind of information gardeners need to know. We may grow plants better by understanding from whence they hail, but it is experienced guidance in choosing amongst the hosts of available plants that keeps us reading, notepad to hand.

And if you think that this book will help you to fill up your garden with the best perennials, just remember that Hinkley has two more books to follow in The Explorer's Garden series. So leave some room, on your bookshelf and in your garden, for trees and shrubs. --Valerie Easton

4 out of 5 stars The Explorer's Garden: Rare and Unusual Perennials.......2001-08-10

This book does what it aims to very well: it describes (and includes photos of) some very unusual plants. However, please be aware that many of these plants do not have mass appeal; that is why, after all, they are still rare and unusual, rather than having been picked up by your local garden centers.

I found myself using this book mostly as a specific adjunct to the Heronswood Nursery catalogue, looking up some photos and cultural information for a few of the plants listed in the catalogue. If this is YOUR intended use, please be aware that you may be able to get this information for a lot less money by just using Heronswood's website, now that it is expanded to include a good variety of plant photos.

5 out of 5 stars informative and a great companion to the Heronswood catalog.......2000-10-05

This is an excellent book. Dan Hinkley is a funny and engaging writer and speaker. I highly recommend this for the gardener who appreciates subtle yet beautiful flowers and foliage. Many of the plants that he discusses are from Asia where he has travelled extensively. The book is a great companion to the thick Heronswood Nursery catalog and web site since it has a number of photos. Dan discusses care and propagation of the plants as well.

          5 out of 5 stars What a Fine Book!.......1999-11-05

A well researched, well thought out guide to some wonderful plants that, to quote the author's witty prose, should be on a good many gardener's 'lust list'. Good photography, HONEST descriptions of the plant (without 'catalog-ese') and cultural information all add to a fine addition to the hort books out there.

            Book Description

.410's are generally lightweight shotguns that produce little kick, making them a popular choice for beginners, youth, or anyone sensitive to recoil. However, their full choke barrels force them to concentrate the available shot, therefore they require the precision of an expert to be effective at any significant distant. Collectors, historians, enthusiasts, and those recapturing their youth will be captivated by this fascinating recount of the .410.

Representing the culmination of 30 years of research, this book catalogs the 125-year developmental history of the .410 shotgun in both the United States and Britain. A mixture of rich images and historical illustrations provide a treasure chest of information valuable to small-bore enthusiasts both collectors and hunters alike. Coverage includes makers such as Browning, Ithaca, Winchester, Boss, Holland & Holland, Purdey, and others. Plus, all significant gunmakers include detailed listings of production numbers.

            * Offers definitive historical overview * Important American and British gunmakers recount their contribution to the .410 bore * Features a glance at multiple perspectives of shotguns--collecting, target and game shooting, and investment

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Spielman Presentation.......2001-12-04

This is an excellent workbook / pattern book for both the beginner and intermediate scroll sawyer, another Spielman success with the contribution of Dan Kihl. There are about 150 full size patterns in the 154 pages, and with the suggested variations on each project, the possibilites are endless.

As usual, the first 22 pages deals with instuctional guidance with photos. Some good instructions on wood selection, transferring patterns, definition cuts, and stack sawing. Then, for the more experienced, Spielman gives advice on combining various metals, plastics and leather with the traditional wood projects. It takes an ordinary project to an extra ordinary project with the "simple" inclusion of different medias.

Also for the more advanced, tips on segmentation and inlaying are provided, again, with photos. Perhaps the most interesting chapter, is on finishing tips, including acetic-acid bath of copper combined with shiny copper inlays. The eight pages of color photos offer great assistance with how different finishing techinques can look.

The are some very unusual patterns in this book and with the combination of the various techniques discussed and presented with photos, makes this book a must to have and you will refer back to it time and time again, just like I do, for some different ideas to apply to other projects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent traditional and comtemporary designs!.......1999-01-21

This has very unusual patterns - some are appropriate for beginner and others for the more experienced. The patterns could possibly be used for sewing appliques, beadwork, or other mediums other than wood or metal.

5 out of 5 stars This book literally lets you have your house in your hands!.......2007-07-30

There are a lot of organizational books on the market, some to help you get rid of clutter, some to help you organize your clutter into essential documents on file at your fingertips, some with places to write info about all types of rooms you have leaving lots of pages blank because you don't have certain rooms in your house that other people may have like a game room or sauna, but for the average homeowner, THIS book is all you need.

First of all, you get to 'name' your own rooms so there's no wasted space! You can label the pages in order of the flow of your house, so if your dining room is right next to your living room, the pages can be labeled that way, and the paint or carpet samples for each room will be close enough together in your book so that you're not flipping back and forth all the time. That alone means the book is much more relavant to you than most books on the market & if you want to include exterior features, or landscaping you can DO that quickly and neatly just by writing in the appropriate title on the next page.

The ABSOLUTELY BEST feature is that EVERY page has a big pocket for receipts, for magazine pictures you've pulled showing what you've done or what you'd like a remodeling project to look like, paint chips, photos, etc. For instance, I once found a picture in a magazine of an exterior doorway I wanted, with some modification, to use on the interior of an area we want to remodel. That was 14 years ago. Try holding onto a picture from a magazine for 14 years without losing it or damaging it! I DID, because I knew right where I'd put it -- I'd placed it in the pocket flap on the 'Future Loft' page, where it would eventually be the entrance door to our loft. Trying to tell a contractor how the door I wanted differed from hundreds of other mission-style doors on the market today would have been impossible without that picture to show the details of what I wanted in my door!

On top of the pockets being useful, each pocket has a grid where you can measure off and sketch your room -- you can sketch a floor plan or a wall with a window or several sketches if you want, it's up to you to use it however it will best suit your circumstances. And the pockets are sturdy enough to hold a LOT of loose pieces of paper, samples, etc. I carried a sort of thin sample of a brick around to match a color for a number of months! Now the brick DID cause some wear and tear on the pocket, but just being able to have it handy was GREAT! It meant I didn't lay it down somewhere in a store and leave it there. I reinforced the pocket with some tape and away I went with my brick sample!

If you're insistent on neat and tidy records, you might want to take some posterboard, cut it to fit the pocket, then staple your receipts or paint chips or whatever you decide you want to keep in your pockets to the posterboard so you can have a flipchart of information that you keep in the pocket, in an organized fashion. Pull out the posterboard, and just flip over to the item you're looking for! If you're REALLY anal about keeping things neat, use a photo refill page inside each pocket and slip your samples, swatches or pictures into the photo refill page so that you can pull out just one sample instead of pulling out the whole page if you want to.

My current book bulges to about 6" thick--and that's without the brick sample--because I've used it to keep remodeling ideas I WANT to do at my fingertips! I'm getting a new one now to track what I've actually done up to this point, and to get us through the remodeling we'll be doing this next year -- we're finally to the point financially where we can do most of what we want (I've been told by a couple of contractors that we should just move to a bigger place, but we'll have everything we need right here, once we remodel a few areas!) and I'll have everything recorded as it's done, in my new book, so it will be complete when the remodeling is done.

Eventually I can pass it on to new owners, when we can no longer take care of ourselves here and decide to sell, and it will help them to either freshen up what we did with the exact color code of paint, know the sizes of each space if they want to remodel, or keep track of their own swatches and chips if they decide to remake certain rooms!

The white plastic 'tooth' binding is wonderful because the book lies flat and expands some if you need extra room like I do!

This is the most appropriately named book I've seen in a loooooonnnnggg time -- "house in hand" is exactly what it is and "peace of mind" is what it provides!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for a New Home!.......2004-03-31

When I first moved into my home I didn't know where to start in decorating. This was long before HGTV, Trading Spaces, or other design shows. This planner was invaluable in helping me get everything together. I was able to take it with me to fabric stores, paint stores, etc. All my swatches, paint numbers and wallpaper samples were together, window measurements were readily available, as well as listings of painters, plumbers, appliance manufacturers, putting everything in one place. When I decided to move, it also helped. All room sizes were listed, as well as information on all appliances, as well as major renovations I had done to the house. My real estate agent said it helped in selling. And now, it's with the new owners.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Time Saver for Decorating Your Home.......2002-04-26

I bought this book during a remodel of our home. I still have it and use it for all my decorating. The pocket pages are the best for storing samples and the grid design is great for showing your room to perspective contractors. If you take it with you shopping, you will have all your information and color swatches with you for every project. It makes a wonderful gift for a new home owner, or for that first apartment.

In an effort to encourage a new visual language for the Internet, the people behind the British magazine Creative Review have chosen to feature 50 innovative Web sites in The New Internet Design Project Reloaded, which they feel make full use of what the Web has to offer. These sites don't rely on the "established syntax" of pages, windows, and "quasi-objects;" rather, they explore new ways to visually represent data and new means of user interface and interactivity.

There are thousands of great new ideas here; all the work is outstanding. Most of the sites push the medium as far as it will go today and are best viewed on the fastest connection possible. Sites profiled include Type Me, Type Me Not (acg.media.mit.edu/people/pcho/typemenot/), Peter Cho's engaging Java applets that react to user input to "play" a letter on the keyboard (try sounding out a name or the word "love") and Potatoland (www.potatoland.org), Mark Napier's collection of wildly interactive pages that generate artwork depending upon the user's movements (in The Shredder, plug in your own URL and see your Web design literally deconstructed).

There are plenty of screen shots, but it's more fun to go through the book while at the computer. Along with the goals and concepts of each site, the applications used are listed. The designers answer questions on what's best about the Web today and what will be the next big trends in the future. And they even list their favorite Web sites.

This book is a follow-up to last year's first volume and, if the sites in that book now seem old hat, the work here surely lives up to the title "cutting edge." --Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: Profiles of innovative Web sites and designers, including screen shots, discussion of concepts and software used; and interviews with the designers on the state of Web design today and outlooks for the future.

                  Book Description

Following the quick sellout of the 1998 edition, The Internet Design Project moves from a straightforward presentation of great sites to the inner workings of the internet. Highlighting some of the best online environments developed in the last year, this volume documents the movement of online design from mere 'eye-candy' towards more sophisticated environments. Like its predecessor, The Internet Design Project includes a wide range of sites and, in addition, features case studies such as John K's (creator of Ren and Stimpy) Spumco site which broadcasts animation on the web. Patrick Burgoyne is the Editor of Creative Review, the leading monthly magazine for the communication arts. He has published two books on design, Bored: Surf/Skate/Snow Graphics and FC Football Graphics. Liz Faber is a CD-Rom producer and writer for Creative Review magazine. Her previous books include The Internet Design Project (with Patrick Burgoyne) and Re:play: Ultimate Games Graphics.

                  1 out of 5 stars total disappointment.......2000-12-27

This book is pretentious and self-consciously arty - I didn't find it useful or even easy to read. And I also object to having 2 pornographic pictures in it. It is the only book I have ever returned because of content in my life!

                  3 out of 5 stars Just average.......2000-10-20

The book has plenty of screnshots, imagens, layout and whatsoever; ok, it's beautiful, but it's just that. The text - the CONTENT - on it is not very worth. It looks just like 'yet another webdesign/hype' book than a 'must have' book.

4 out of 5 stars Job well done.......2000-01-17

The book is an excellent visual/informative tool for web designers. The extensive use of screenshots, interviews and listing of software used to design the web site is very useful. The developers of the 50 websites discuss their points of view about where the web is, where it is going, its current limitations and more. A must have.

Fortunately for the reader, some web designers efforts shine through the poor book design and typeography. Save a tree by avoiding this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great inexpensive book to get you started in web design.......1998-08-21

A handsome and practical book, chock-full of useful tricks and tips for WWW graphics design, Although the book was created for already-experienced graphics designers moving to the Web medium, there's plenty of good information for novices as well. This book is especially strong in helping you solve the mysteries of working with transparency, interlacing, imagemaps, and bit-depths to create effective and compact images that work on the web. Book Description

Biography, theater history, anecdotes, and commentary are combined to show the development of an indigenous Canadian professional theater since World War II. From Timothy Findley’s beginnings in theater to bats occupying the Red Barn Theatre, this book offers a behind-the-scenes peek at how plays were produced, what the critics thought, what went wrong on stage and off, and some big name performers, such as William Shatner, Bruno Gerussi, Mickey Rooney, Jackie Coogan, Jackie Burroughs, Joe E. Brown, Zasu Pitts, Tallulah Bankhead, Edward Everett Horton, and Billie Burke. The book also describes the financial struggles of keeping a theater open, and, through a wide variety of plays shown on the stage of these theaters, what type of play to put on for the public.
