A Brilliant Historical Fiction.......2005-08-02
Zayni Barakat is a historical novel set in Mamluk Egypt. Having lived in Egypt (where I read the novel 11 years ago) and studied Egyptian history, I can say that the work more than accomplishes the primary job of historical fiction--it transports the reader to another time and place, making that time and that place come alive.
However, Zayni Barakat is, like much of Naguib Mahfouz's later work, a pointed commentary on modern Egyptian politics. In particular, it is the story of police surveillance and what it means to live -- and work for -- a police state. Al-Ghitani captures the dis-ease and perversity of the Nasserist police state admirably. The novel thus deserves to be read both as a diversion and as an education in contemporary Arab politics.
pertinent to our time.......2000-02-05
This book is a written the context of the Mamluk dynasty in Egypt. However many of the attitudes, methods and ideas presented in the book can be found in today's Middle East. The author has an excellent command on the istory of the region and also on the attitudes feelings and emotions of the period he is desciribing through a narrarative account. The book is fiction but it feels too real to be that

Even the best translator cannot reflect the original.......2007-10-01
I had an opportunity to read this book both in its Arabic original and English translation. The original is a masterpiece, the translation is a very good book. Of course the translator has done a great job but there are always words and phrases that are virtually intranslatable and even the closest description takes away a great deal of charm. I also believe that the dynamics of the content have been hurten with change in apperance of certain parts, such as "Announcements". Nevertheless, the book is eternal, to say so. It was written 30 years ago and is still reflecting perfectly the treachery of what is called politics and naivety of human belief in justice. I happened to notice that the writing techniques used in this book, such as historic background, multiple characters' view of the same problem, have been later almost identically repeated by many other prominent writers. I wonder if that is concidence.

Book Description
OH, WHAT A TANGLED WEB...
Everything should have been quiet and pleasant for Ben Holiday, the former Chicago lawyer who became sovereign of the Magic Kingdom of Landover. But it wasn't.
Horris Kew, conjurer, confidence-man, and trickster, had returned to Landover from Ben's own world. Alas, Horris had not returned of his own volition--he had been sent by the Gorse, a sorcerer of great evil, whom Horris had unwittingly freed from the magic Tangle Box, where it had long ago been imprisoned by the fairy folk. Now it had returned to enslave those who had once dared condemn it. But first, it would rid Landover of all who could stand in its way...
Soon Ben found himself imprisoned within the gloom of the Tangle Box, lost in its mists and its labyrinthine ways. The only one who could free Ben from the Tangle Box was the lady Willow. But she had disappeared, was gone from Landover on a mysterious mission of her own....

"Trust Not the Cat...".......2006-07-11
As the fourth book in the "Landover" series, Terry Brooks's somewhat comedic-fantasy series (especially when compared to the serious "Shannara" saga), "The Tangle Box" continues Ben Holiday's adventures as king of a fairytale kingdom that he purchased in a shopping catalogue. Having successfully ruled Landover for several years, Ben is delighted when his sylph-wife Willow informs him that she is expecting their first child. However, the celebration is short-lived when the charlatan Horris Kew returns from exile in Ben's world to the Landover, with a new plan to cause havoc.
Having accidentally released a creature known as Gorse from a magical box, Kew becomes the unwitting pawn in its plan to seize control of Landover. Having lured the three most powerful individuals in the kingdom - King Holiday, the dragon Strabo and the witch Nightshade - Kew traps them within the confines of the Tangle Box in order for the Gorse to proceed with plans of domination without interference.
From this basic scenario Brooks creates three major storylines; one good, one mediocre and one just plain bad. The best plot is concerned with the situation that Ben, Strabo and Nightshade (who is Brooks's best Landover character) find themselves in when they awaken in the Tangle Box, unaware of their surroundings and stripped of their memories, magic and identities. Calling themselves the Knight, the Lady and the Gargoyle, the three companions (completely unaware that they are adversaries in real life) traverse the mysterious terrain of the Tangle Box searching for answers to their existence. Brooks plays a great psychological game between the three of them and surprising things happen that change their complicated relationships forever, especially in the case of Nightshade and Ben. Their love/hate relationship has always been a highlight of the Landover stories, and what transpires here has the potential for payoff in later books.
Meanwhile Willow is on a quest of her own, as the birth of a child with sylph and human parentage has complications. Seeking the advice of the Earth Mother, Willow is told that she must collect earth from three locations; Landover, Earth and the Faerie Mists in order to secure the safe delivery of her child. Joined by an old favourite, the faerie-cat Edgewood Dirk, Willow sets off on an intriguing (but hardly exciting) journey for the sake of her unborn child.
That leaves the last major storyline which is unfortunately both predictable and convoluted. While Ben and Willow are gone, Questor Thews (the court wizard) and Abernathy (the court scribe) must deal with the bothersome Horris Kew. Introducing objects called "mind's eye crystals" that show the bearer their heart's desire, Kew suggests distributing them to the kingdom - an idea to which Questor and Abernathy foolishly agree. Unbeknownst to them, the crystals are merely a distraction from the Gorse's true intentions in taking over the kingdom.
Unfortunately, the Gorse makes a generic villain whose personality, motivation and evil plan is just plain boring, and the clownish Horris Kew isn't much better. (Neither is his bird Biggar, whom I would have mentioned earlier if he hadn't been such a pointless character). The execution and resolution of this particular storyline drags the story down considerably.
Nonetheless, "The Tangle Box" is an entertaining enough tale if you're looking for pleasant escapism. Deepening characters and expanding relationships, this bodes well for future books in the "Landover" series and is sure to be a hit with fans - Brooks even throws in a quick reference to "The Lord of the Rings" when Biggar suggests he and Horris escape to the world where the people with the "big furry feet live". However, for newcomers it's best not to start reading here; retrace your steps till you find the previous books in the series: "Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold!", "Wizard at Large" and "The Black Unicorn."
The Tangle Box.......2005-09-08
In The Tangle Box, Ben Holiday, king of Landover is trapped away from those he loves. Willow, his wife, is on a journey alone carrying their child. In the meantime, havoc ensues in Landover with the arrival of a past citizen, who had been exiled, Horris Kew.
Both Willow and Ben are searching for answers. Willow the answer of how to safely deliver her child, Ben the answer to who he is and how to escape. Neither is aware of the importance of the others journey.
The books in this series keep getting better. This one being my favorite so far. Some of my favorite characters are back, including Edgewood Dirk and Im finally seeing some character growth in Ben. A 3.5 star book for me. Im looking forward to finishing the series with the next book...Witches Brew.
plus a few for extra good writing.......2000-07-13
Finally Brooks took some risks and put his characters really on the line. I found this the best plotted one of the series! I loved it. The characters' explorations in their prison are wonderfully done, especially those they make into themselves. I think Brooks put more meat in this one, and that is why I like it so much. You gotta read this one. It is definately the most satisfying of the bunch, with the G'Home Gnomes being the coolest part of the book practically. Read it.
Great Job Terry, Another Piece of Excellent Work!!.......1999-08-07
I loved this book. Next to THE WITCHES' BREW, this was the best landover novel, Terry really did out do himself this time. I enjoyed this book the whole way through, I never wanted to put it down, and when I did, I picked it up again almost immediatly. I loved all the hardships and obsticles the characters had to face, endure, and over come throughout the course of the book. GREAT JOB!!!!!! This is a must read for anybody and everybody who has ever had a love for the spellbinding magic of a great fantasy novel.
Great light reading........1999-07-28
It's a good read, if some entertainment and light fantasy is what you want. Fortunately its what I want, and I can say that next to Piers Anthonly's XANTH series, this is the best light fantasy series going.

Weak Hero; Decent Writing.......2006-01-18
This book tells the tale of Sinden Kass, lamplighter for the underhive town of Junktion in Hive Primus on Necromunda. The setting is Games Workshop's Necromunda, an offshoot game in their popular Warhammer 40K universe.
The protagonist, Kass, is clearly fairly young and not terribly mature. As the reader, you want to empathize with his situation, but his passivity and the constant "Why me?" attitude make it difficult. Only for the very last pages of the book does he take an active roll in events rather than simply reacting to whatever portion of the plot falls upon his doorstep. He does not drive the story as much as the story drives him.
There are also quite a few tantalizing plot threads that are never explored to any great degree: what happened to Kass' sister; how exactly did Garm Heliko become who he is.
The writing, however, is decent, and there's plenty of good background tid-bits that really bring some of the settings to life, and quite a few situations that would make excellent Necromunda or Kill Team scenarios if you play Workshop's games. This detail should also satisfy the "fluff"-ologists who read Black Library's offerings for insights into the 40K universe.
Overall, the book would be somewhat disappointing to those looking for a strong protagonist or plot, but that's made up for by good writing and solid background.
yawwwwwnnnn..........2006-01-13
I havent any clue why the black library would publish ANYTHING sans a 2 weeks notice of resignation from this obvious amatuer "writer".
HE is not responsible for the creation of the Necromunda world- it has been around as a table top game for almost a decade if not more, nor did he create 90 percent of the gangs and ideas in that blasphemy of literature.
I am so angry that I spent my hard earned money on 3 logs of you-know-what to feed some unimaginative waste of space.
His use of the perspective and narrative from the main characters of all his books are just sorry, boring, and missing all that make the 40k and Nec series worth reading. Shira and that lamplighting idiot from Junktion need to be killed off by someone who can write, like Dan Abnett or Ian Watson.
Farrer- do the world a favor and write fine print for calculators or something-just cease your destruction of 40k and Nec lore
I have read EVERYTHING thus far in the 40k and Nec lineup of novels from the Black library and can say with total confidence...
...Anyone looking to read anything 40k or Nec-STAY AWAY FROM MATTHEW FARRER!!!
He is no good to the planet Earth as a writer.
Outstanding!.......2005-11-08
Set in the far, far away future, there is an underworld colony called Necromunda. The city is set up much like a hive. The colony is built in layers. The closer to the surface a person lives, the more wealthy he is. The deeper a person lives, the more poor he is. Needless-to-say, in the deepest levels reside the most brutal people who struggle each day just to survive.
The levels not only reflect the status of the people, but also in the status of the technology. Those in the deeper levels have forgotten much of the technology that exists. Items that would have made the impossible, possible for those living in Junktion.
Sinden Kass is a lamplighter in the town of Junktion. Lamplighters are such a common sight to all Junktioners that most everyone knows them by sight. Yet their community is beginning to pull itself apart. Gangs fight for territory and better weapons. And life in the Underhive is steadily growing worse for Kass and his kit. Someone is murdering off the lamplighters. Kass is about to have the worst time of his life!
***** Before this book I never imagined that there could be so many different types of gangs and I had never seen a plague-zombie. Author Matthew Farrer has created an interesting way of life for the scarred up characters in this novel. One thing is for sure, I never grew bored. The story opens up sounding like a narrative from a soldier undergoing fire. My attention was captured by the very first sentence. When you pick up this story, be sure you have plenty of free time. You will not want to put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting (and lost a lot of sleep). OUTSTANDING! *****

Excellent for teaching prayer in a small group.......2004-06-28
I have used this book for seven years now in many small groups. I tell participants that what we will do is learn a simple way to pray. And the material presented certainly does that, but so much more! We convenant to do two things: 1.) to spend 15 minutes a day in prayer using the material provided; 2) to meet weekly for 45 minutes for nine months to pray together and to talk about our time spent with God the previous week, and encourage one another for the upcoming week.
So, Link's material is teaching us a simple way to pray and support one another, but at the same time he is leading us through Ignatius' process for coming to terms with the meaning of our life through the eyes of faith in Jesus Christ, and urging us to make a meaningful commitment to Jesus and service in his kingdom.
The meditational material follows the Liturgical year and the life of our Lord. It can be helpful to begin the meetings in late Summer or early Fall so that the weeks of prayer fall correctly during Christmas, Lent and Easter.
I should add that I have used this book to assist many individual Christians in their prayer lives also, without the group meetings. Typically, I will meet with them individually a half an hour each week for conversation on their progress.
I've seen this book bless many people. I should add that I am Lutheran and the material has occasional references to Catholic spirituality which feel a bit jarring to some Lutheran ears, but nothing which prevents our wholehearted use of the material.

There's cooking, and then there's cooking over fire--as in grilling and barbecuing. This is a special world and for anyone who needs proper introduction, there could be few writers better prepared as guide and host than Denis Kelly. With Grilling and Barbecuing he has pulled everything under one roof: a little history, a little anthropology, a little social criticism, and a slew of recipes. There isn't a lot of new ground tilled between these pages--how much more basic can you get than cooking over fire? But what Miller does he does with a lifelong enthusiasm for the sizzle of hot meat and the smell of smoke on his clothes. The why of America's fascination with grilling and barbecue is deftly covered, as well as how it's done, and what it's done with, both tools and ingredients. So if there's someone you know who's new to all this, Grilling and Barbecuing is the book. What goes on a grill is the organizing principle of the chapters: "Fish and Seafood," "Birds," "Pork," "Beef," "Lamb," "Vegetables and Fruit." You'll find such recipes as Garlic Shrimp on the Grill with Lime Aioli, How to Grill a Whole Fish, Hawaiian Chicken with Grilled Pineapple and Papaya Salad, Cajun Pork Chops with Dirty Rice, Carne Asada Tri-Tip, Lamb Shoulder Slow-Smoked Kentucky Style, Eggplant Grilled in Oregano Smoke, Grilled Corn with Chile-Garlic Butter, and Grilled Peaches with Berry Coulis. This is the author, with Bruce Aidells of The Complete Meat Cookbook and Hot Links and Country Flavors. You won't find a better informed author to show you the how and the why of cooking over fire than Denis Kelly. --Schuyler Ingle

Not Worth It..........2004-06-04
I like the style of Thimbleberries - so much so that I have all books that they've released. It is for this reason that I'm so disappointed with this book. It is just a compilation of design ideas and quilt patterns that have already been published by Landauer Books under four or five other titles. After waiting for new ideas, this is what we get? It's the same as the "Collection of Classic Quilts" and "Best of Thimbleberries" books - re-releasing previously published patterns to make more money. At least the newest flannel book has 'some' new patterns in it. If you have any of the other Thimbleberries books published by Landauer, you won't be missing anything if you pass this book by.
Awful.......2002-01-03
Given my style, I should love this book, but I don't. This isn't "classic country" but dated, trite, cutesy, busy country. Are these editors living in some sort of a time warp? I am so disappointed in this book and sorry I wasted my money on it.
Terribly disappointing.......2001-12-14
The photos in this book look as if they were taken in the 1980s. The whole book looks dated, and it's filled with country clichés. I've seen all these ideas zillions of times and done most of them myself in the past. What I wanted were some fresh new country ideas, n ot this kind of a rehash of country style from 20 years ago.
Stunning!.......2000-07-17
I love this book, like anything else by Lynette Jensen! Want to create my home just like hers-only my walls have to many different colors. Need to re-paint them all in cream......... Some nice projects there ,too!
A New Favorite.......2000-06-11
This latest book is a must-have for all Lynette Jensen and Thimbleberries fans. Her house is beautifully decorated with quilts that are look both cozy and beautiful. If she gave tours, I'd go - but this book is the next best thing.

An enchanting read.......2005-12-26
Zsa Zsa Gabor's "One Lifetime Is Not Enough," is a terrific read. Zsa Zsa Gabor and co-author Wendy Leigh, provide an entertaining, fun, fast-paced book about the glamorous life of the charming, beautiful, spirited, witty, celebrated Zsa Zsa Gabor. I loved it and wish it had been much, much longer!
~A BOOK ACUALLY WORTH READING~.......2004-07-15
This autobiography of Zsa Zsa Gabor is great. I never usually read books but this one I coulden't put down. It is so interesting on how her life turned out to be! She shares her deep secrets in this whole book. I dont know why anyone woulden't like this book! THIS ONE'S FOR YOU ZSA ZSA! ~Always Lorraine~
~A BOOK ACTUALLY WORTH READING~.......2004-07-10

"One Life" is too much.......2004-05-19
A possible rejected title for Zsa Zsa Gabor's autobiography: "All The Men I Slept With, And All The Gems They Bought Me." Gabor's biography "One Life is Not Enough" is as full of dishing as a kitchen sink, but after a while her gossipy revelations become boring instead of entertaining.
Born to a rich Hungarian family, Zsa Zsa Gabor first got married at the age of fifteen, but left her husband after the death of her lover, Turkish leader Ataturk. Eight more marriages came after that, including George Sanders, Prince Frederick von Anhalt, and Conrad Hilton (yes, from THAT Hilton family). Not to mention a small army of lovers that included Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, and more.
Gossipy memoirs are always a fun guilty pleasure, the sort of thing to tuck inside a weekly news magazine at lunch. Gabor reveals plenty of sexy details (including making out with Greta Garbo) that are above and beyond even what tabloids usually print, and she does in it a very straightforward, matter-of-fact manner.
Unfortunately, her exploits start to get annoying. The word "diamond" is used constantly (we get it, Zsa Zsa -- you love diamonds), and there is little of Gabor's life except who she slept with and why. There isn't a great deal about her daughter or family... except when ex-hubby George Sanders married her sister Magda. Some of her stories are questionable -- like Sanders wanting to watch Gabor bed a Catholic priest, or Gabor sleeping with Sinatra to make him leave her apartment. And others raise weird questions (if she's so amazingly sexy, why did her husbands keep cheating?).
Gabor gushes ad nauseam about her assorted lovers and husbands, few of which are actually around much. Initially, since her first lover was a god-king, it's an interesting tale. But when she gets to Hollywood, these guys mostly start to blur together. What's more, Gabor certainly was telling the truth when she said she liked being around men more than women -- her descriptions of women like Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly and any other beautiful heterosexual actress are pretty catty, to say the least.
Zsa Zsa Gabor's autobiography starts off as a delicious gossipfest, but eventually deteriorates into a listing of the men she slept with and/or married. "One Life is Not Enough" is way more than enough.
It's trash, but I couldn't put it down!.......1999-08-20
This is one of those books that you're embarrassed to be seen reading, buying, or checking out of the library. Zsa Zsa has written the most egotistical book I've ever read! Some of it is SO hard to believe, such as the little chapter about the priest who wanted to break his vows for one night of passion with Ms. Gabor (to make it even more incredible, her husband allegedly encouraged her to accept, telling her that it was his fantasy to see her with a priest). But this book was great entertainment, like a saucy bit out of the National Enquirer. Despite the fact that it may have lowered my IQ a few points, it was worth the hours it took to read it. Great pictures, too, of the young Zsa Zsa, who was a great beauty back in the days.
