Book Description
Tawera and his sister are inseparable, in a relationship that is impossible for others to share. In fact his whole whanau is bonded by secrets, a genealogy stitched together by shame, joy, love and sometimes grief.
Patricia Grace's major new novel merges recent headlines with stories of a heartfelt family history. It is an account of the mysteries that operate at many levels between generations, where the present is the pivot, the center of the spiral, looking outward to the past and future that define it.
Customer Reviews:
Baby No-Eyes.......2007-09-18
Baby No-Eyes is a novel beautiful in both language and content. Patricia Grace weaves this complex yet very comprehensible novel through the use of four narrators, each of whom serves as a different lens for understanding the events which take place. Although I do not wish to over-simplify the book by saying it is a story of the Maori struggle in a Pakeha-run environment, this is certainly one of the most important themes.
The main piece of plot, as far as action goes, involves the legal battle over an area of sacred land between a group of Maoris and the Council--a government group attempting to uphold and profit from outdated land "negotiations" between the Maori people and the British. Grace deals with this topic firmly, yet does so in a manner which does her surname justice. She manages to point out the absolute absurdity and unfairness within the bureaucracy without falling into large-scale hatred of all things Pakeha.
Aside from the David verse Goliath type theme, the idea of family is an incredibly important issue in the novel. Grace challenges some normal conventions of the immediate family, and opens up new avenues of thought for understanding what family can mean.
In Baby No-Eyes Grace has created an intricately woven, powerful piece. It offers an insightful and informative viewing point into certain aspects of Maori culture, and is also simply a well-crafted and engaging piece of fiction.
read over and over and over again.......2004-09-14
I was travelling overseas when a friend gave this to me to read on trains and downtime - I couldnt put it down and read and re-read it continuously. Im a HUGE fan of Patricia Grace and find myself wanting to crawl inside her books and become a part of the characters world. What away she has with worlds - thank you Patricia!
Fantastic Insight.......2001-01-15
This novel is a very enjoyable read but as an added bonus it also enables your eyes to be opened more about the maori culture through the lovable characters. It takes you into what they as a people hold dear and why, and as a sub-plot there is an attempt to get a piece of swampland returned to a particular tribe and this involves an occupation of a park not too dissimilar to the Wanganui occupation of recent New Zealand history. Especially if you are a New Zealander of european descent this book is valuable because it makes you see the issues from a different perspective then your own and I found that aspect nearly as interesting as the actual story. Overall I found the charm of this story is the ability to take a horrible act of insensitivity and turn it into one of the most original characters ever told.
A book full of emotions and wonderful stories........1999-09-07
This is one of those books that you want to re-read after finishing it. I love it.

Heartfelt and nostalgic--a lovely read.......1998-04-24
This is a new favorite author for me, and a classic storyline that works every time. Who can resist a character who has to return to her hometown to face the demons of the past? A wonderful sense of place and a timeless romance. Have a kleenex on hand.
He's Got His Daddy's Eyes.......1998-04-01
Mrs. Dyer has done her best work so far in this book. She has shown a great understanding for the human heart and it's pain. Her charactors are so real that one steps into the pages and lives the parts themselves. I can't wait for her next book as I have read them all to date.
It made me laugh, made me cry, and warmed my heart........1997-11-24
Ms. Dyer's story is an emotional portrait, illustrating pain, fear, joy and hope in what is often the struggle to seek out one's heart. Inner battles to which one person must surrender in order to give fully to another. This is her best work to date!!
Loved this book! It was a warm, satisfying read........1997-11-23
I loved the characters, the interaction between the hero and heroine was terrific. The secondary characters were also well-written - the kids were great! Josh is the hero every woman wants. I'm looking forward to more books from this talented author.

Fantastic.......2006-06-14
Absotively, posolutly, great. I could not have gotten a better return for the $11 I paid for this book. While there are a few grammar errors, I found the book very easy to read, and the author's style, completely fascinationg. I will definately look for more of his works in the future.
The Vampire Genevieve: Book Review.......2006-06-07
The Vampire Genevieve By Jack Yeovil has to be one of the most unorganized books I've ever read. It is a collection of four books put into one volume by the publisher (Games Workshop), including: Drachenfels, Genevieve Undead, Beasts in Velvet, and Silver Nails.
I found the first book to be good, despite the lack of an editor it seemed. I found many errors in the text, like numbers in random words, using "had" twice in a row, symbols in stead of letters, things of that nature. The story itself was intruiging, if not rushed at the end. The author ended the story with seemingly no intention of making another book on the topic of Genevieve. I liked the first books idea for the story, which I will not ruin for you.
As for the books that followed, I found a lack of Genevieve starting to become a trend. In the second book, the first part of the story didn't envolve her at all. She was later introduced and seemed more of a secondary character then anything else. In book three, it wasn't even until part two of the story that you actualy have her really IN the story. She makes only a small cameo coming out of a pub in part one. I was begining to wonder if she was even going to be in this book at all.
I have also seen that the author forgets what he has written. At the end of book one, he states that Genevieve's love interest and her go their seperate ways. Book two, they are back together, but then leave each other again. Book three, she is back with him with NO explination as to what happened that she decided to go back to him.
Names are very hard to pronounce and it seems that the Warhammer theme is only a small metioned thing that is there so that Game Workshops would publish it under the series name.
In book two, the seperate parts of this book seem to be from totally different stories, with no relation to the first. The first part of this book belonged as the ending of book one, giving that book a MUCH better ending then what Yeovil had originaly written. It seems that he released the second book because he felt the need to give it a better ending, then thought of a totaly different idea for a story after writting it.
I think that Yeovil should have thought things through, planned out his story lines better and actualy should have paid for an editor. (No editor was sited on or inside the book.) This book has poor organization and needs re-writting to make it work.
OH MAN MAJOR WOWZERS.......2006-01-21
This is my very first trip to the worlds of Warhammer. I've been depressed for months because I couldn't find a decent fantasy OR any other kind of fiction for that matter (and yes, I do have a life other than reading, as a matter of fact, recently met one major hottie, just need to figure out what's wrong with him [SO FAR--- dare I say there's absolutely no arselike characteristics!] hope it's nothing like, you know, something I will REALLY NEED once things progress, that would pretty much suck) and out of the blue I picked up this book and am totally, completely enthralled. The writing is excellent, the storyline is immersive, major freekin creature fixes, atmosphere, suspense, mystery, excitement, you name it we got it here. You should buy this, even though the books aren't exactly new, which doesn't make a whole lot of difference, new stuff stinks anyway. There are 4 books about this sweet Genevieve all wrapped up in one volume. So you get a heckuva deal on top of all that satisfactory entertainment. I'm very serious here, buy this, you will love it. I'll keep you posted on the you-know-what at the first opportunity. And if I don't come back for a long time you will know I'm not reading because it was pretty darn delicious. And if THAT happens--- roll over Rudolph Valentino. Because the chances of me finding a man who truly has it all are only just slightly more remote than Rudolph changing position within his current address.

Book Description
The Heechee were perhaps the greatest and most tantalizing mystery the human race had ever known. The first Heechee artifacts were uncovered on Venus, and in the beginning they were treated as nothing more than costly souvenirs and curiosities for tourists from Earth and Mars. But when an asteroid stocked with autonavigating spacecraft was discovered, suddenly the Heechee universe was thrown wide open, giving birth to the Gateway Corporation and bringing untold riches to the adventurers who risked the unknown to see where those Heechee spacecraft would take them.
Many of those brave souls never returned. The ones who did brought back technological wonders that transformed life on Earth -- but of the Heechee themselves there was no sign...
The Gateway Trip, lavishly illustrated by artist Frank Kelly Freas, presents the tales of those perilous journeys and marvelous discoveries, as those intrepid pioneers followed the trail of the elusive Heechee and changed the course of human history forever!
Customer Reviews:
Just to kill time.......2003-07-02
The first part of this book is really good, the story of Audee Walthers will keep you reading and maybe you will learn something about Venus, the rest of the book is going down and down as you read, it doesn't have any punch to keep it reading, I can tell you that when you finish the story of Audee Walthers close the book and you will be very happy, if you decide to finish it don't expect to much from it.
A Gift To Diehard Heechee Fans.......2002-11-12
This book is not a continuation of the Heechee saga. However, it does provide a wealth of background material. Much of the book will already be familiar to readers of the Saga. Two bonuses are noteworthy. There is a long short story (around 100 pages) detailing the life of Audie Walthers when he was an airbody pilot on Venus. This story is pretty engrossing, and gives further insight into the goings on on Venus in the world of Gateway. Also, for those curious after reading Gateway as to the adventures of the other prospectors, there is a section that deals with the successes and disasters encountered by these people. If you are a [big] fan of Gateway, this book should be obtained. Otherwise, the short story about Audie and some additional background material might still convince you to get the book.
Not his best work.......1998-07-08
Mostly dry and repetitive narrative, but does fill in some detail in the history of man's investigation of the Heechee, and does include at least one good short story. A fairly light and quick read.
Marginal at best - only for die-hard Heechee lovers.......1997-02-26
This book is an overview of how the discovery of Heechee artifacts affected human history. If you've already read the Heechee novels, the only part of interest is a single short story; the rest is mere repetition. If you haven't read the Heechee novels, pass this over and start with Gateway

Silence explicated.......2005-04-17
Belisle is a Camaldolese Benedictine who sets out to survey the history of solitary monasticism in Christianity, beginning with its founders in Jesus, John the Baptist, and the desert fathers of Egypt and Palestine, and ending with some outstanding twentieth-century figures of solitude such as Charles de Foucauld, founder of the Little Brothers and Little Sisters of Jesus. The book begins well but becomes somewhat choppy or sketchy by the end, particularly since some of the "solitary" figures he surveys, such as Dorothy Day and Catherine de Hueck Doherty, are better known for their active life of living and working amidst the poor and destitute. He is on firmer ground writing of the desert fathers and the earliest experiments in Christian monasticism, which emphasized silence and solitude quite strongly. I would say this book is not as good as some others in the same series; nevertheless, it's a worthwhile read as an introduction to this strain in Christian history and spirituality.

One of the easiest cookbooks I have used.......2003-04-03
Even if the recipes weren't low-fat, I would still enthusiastically recommend this cookbook. I have yet to try a recipe out of this cookbook that hasn't been a breeze to prepare and also tastes wonderful.
Who cares if it is low-fat? It won't occur to you as you try the various soups and stews. Simply enjoy it for the delicious meal that it truly is.

Book Description
Written for both experienced and novice collectors, 100 Years of the Decorative Arts is a comprehensive illustrated survey of a period once ignored by serious antique dealers but now one of the most popular collecting fields. In this book, Eric Knowles brings together Victoriana, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
Beginning with an introduction to the main events, artistic movements and technological advances of the period, Knowles looks in detail at all of the important craftsmen and women working in the United States, Britain, and continental Europe. The range of media considered is no less diverse and includes furniture, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and glass. Each section includes information on identification, valuation, dating and fakes. Finally, there is a list of designers, craftsmen and women, manufacturers and their marks, and a glossary of technical terms.
Customer Reviews:
extensive but not enough.......2000-09-04
covers a wide range of different antiques and styles with a focus on the main artists of each style, descriptions, marks, and tips for what to look out for, but does not provide enough examples of the works of each artist or factory featured. good reading, well written, extensive and informative. the book contains a good number of selected designers and manufacturers as well as the different marks of many of them and that is very helpful. the author,Eric Knowles,is one of the leading experts in the field and you notice that as you read. it is a shame he does not put a value estimate by the photos.

Just another book trying to produce revenue..........2003-05-26
First of...commenting on the above written review. Amy Francheschini has done nothing for the Web, but introduce the unoriginal "Hello Kitty" look. Other than that, there is nothing of value that would validate her as a great contributor to the already muddled motley crew of "Web Designers." The word designer used loosely. The book itself is just another one of those coffee table books, that offer nothing more than a vista of admittedly good work, yet is more of a self promo, fueling what is already a group of ego heavy designers, rather than providing some useful inspiration. If you already have a big collection and just want to expand your library, get the book. If you are a design student who does not come by funding easily, save your money.
She's one of best artists on the web.......2002-12-08
This book doesn't do justice to what Amy Francheschini has done on the Web. A couple of years ago when I started my web career as a designer I happen to come across her name in a book. After checking out atlasmagazine.com and futurefarmers.com I was hooked.
The whimsy with which she designs is refreshing in a pool of macho edicts and declarations.
She has unapologetically managed to reintroduce beauty to the web and we're are better for it.
