Book Description
Tuberculosis mortality in the United States and in Britain was declining in the late nineteenth century but rising in Ireland. Only in the first decade of the twentieth century did mortality from tuberculosis begin to fall and even then it remained higher in Ireland than in Britain and many other European nations throughout the first half of the twentieth century.
Why Ireland's pattern of tuberculosis mortality was different is the subject of this book. Several controversies in the history of tuberculosis epidemics are addressed; the degree to which poverty and standard of living played a part in the tuberculosis decline, the role of public health, urbanisation and gender.
Because tuberculosis was comparatively higher in Ireland it remained a much more potent political issue well into the twentieth century and the interaction between Ireland's politics and the question of tuberculosis is discussed.

Very Good.......2007-08-19
I must confess that when I saw who the author of this novel was, I was a bit skeptic about it. Byers' work, in my opinion, ranged from mediocre to bad (Year of the Rogue Dragons trilogy). Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel.
The novel is simply a set of good elements, without an obvious weak spot. Characters are numerous, good, consistent and interesting. Byers gives the villains more space than he usually does, and that really bolsters the dynamic of the novel. I must mention one of the villains, Bileworm, who was given simply brilliant characterization. The intricate relationship between Shamur and her husband is given much space and consideration by the author, and the end result is very good. Other Uskreven family members play a greater role in this book, than they did in "Shadow's Witness" by Paul S. Kemp, and I think this book should've maybe been published as the first one (not counting the "Halls of Stormweather" anthology).
The plot is strong, fast-paced and free of any logical errors. The atmosphere and the setting are maybe a bit off the pace, but they surely aren't bad, simply disregarded, I would say. The book also features a couple of great sword-fights, something where Byers' fencing expertise comes to the fore.
As I said earlier, this is really a novel without a weak spot. I really can't find anything in this novel that particularly stung my eyes. Nevertheless, I'm giving it four stars, just because it failed to bring something extra, some little touch that differentiates a good book from a great one.
I know this original edition of the novel maybe hard to come by, but there is a reprint that should be published in a couple of months. Make sure you don't miss this great installment in the "Sembia: Gateway to the Realms" series.

Crucial installment of the Sembia series.......2001-07-01
After reading and really enjoying the last two books in the series, I was somewhat nervously regarding the release of this book as it centres around a rather awkward secret and marital problems ( I personally like to avoid these sorts of problems in books and see the characters simply focus on beating the bad guys, winning the girl etc etc).
However the book is well written with the author exploring the past and present of the Uskervan matriach, a character who has been sidelined and treated a bit coldy in most of the previous stories. Richard Lee Byers however does a good job of exploring the character and adds plenty of exciting action to boot. To top it all off the book ends with a happy ending, something which always leaves me with satisfied feelings at the end of a book.
All in all this book is pretty good by the standard of most Realms novels and despite some credibility gaps as to what the characters do, is really pleasing (along with the other stories in the series) for the way in which it threads all the characters and stories together in a way that we grow attached to them and feel as if the family is really changing through the tests it has thrown at it (kinda like a soap opera I guess).
With the standard of the first 3 books in the Sembia series so high, I can barely wait for the next addition to the series "Black Wolf" to be released in December.
HIGH ADVENTURE FUN.......2001-05-24
This book has all you need for a really fine time. The heroine is feisty and has a big, interesting secret. There's intrigue, monsters, swords and sorcery galore, masterful use of language and characters you can really take to heart.
If you've read other SEMBIA series stories and books, you'll find old friends and if you have not, you'll make some mew ones. Though this book is part of a series, its story is complete.
Buy this one. You'll have a rousing good read!

Chilling SPACE adventure!.......2005-12-29
HI. I'm not the biggest fan of sci-fi, but this series is cool and innovative. It's realistic and has interesting plots! Anyone looking for adventure and novels with technical and scientific twists to it...READ THIS SERIES!! This book, # 5, is tied with the tenth for my favorite. A sudden seizing of a space station on planet Mars by galactic terrorists leaves young Tyce Sanders fighting for his life and the lives of other hostages--including some very important to him. The ending is surprising. (Brouwer is real good!) Better, it brings out Christian values and real important lessons! This series is not the absolute best, but it is definitely underrated. Just TRY IT!
Book Description
Richard Holloway's highly acclaimed analysis of contemporary morality has met with great success in the U.K., while causing a great deal of controversy with its broadminded and refreshingly unhypocritical and honest views on life in modern society. Godless Morality tackles issues that affect us all -- it is a book with which every member of our society should engage. "Holloway's language and style are engaging, his research conscientious and his conclusions thoughtful and frequently wise." -- The Sunday Times (London) "A passionate, provocative and commonsense challenge to easy cant." -- The Observer (London) "A Book of Morals for our brave new world, by a very wise man indeed. Inspiring. Fascinating. Full of hope." -- Fay Weldon "This is a courageous book for a bishop to write, and everything it says about morality is right...." -- Literary Review
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing view of ethics.......2004-12-22
Holloway is a recently retired Anglican bishop, which makes the title of his book even more interesting than it would be otherwise. He takes a very refreshing view of ethics, arguing that in a society where the Bible is no longer regarded as the fount of all knowledge, attempting to appeal to it as the support for a system of ethics is futile. The most impressive feature of his argument is his appeal to the pastoral harm inflicted by such an approach, with multiple examples.
Provacative!.......2002-04-12
Bishop Holloway provides us with a provacative, compassionate, occasionally humorous and always well reasoned argument to develop a non-theocentric ethic for the twenty-first century. Not since Joseph Fletcher has the world seen such a strong argument for a coherent situational ethic.
Fundamentalists of all stripes will undoubtably object to Bishop Holloway's efforts to outline a moral system requiring the consent of those who live within it. Such a system would potentially undermine the absolute authority that Church, State, Synagogue, Mosque and Temple have too often claimed for themselves.
Despite the inevitable objections of the ethical establishment, Bishop Holloway's intellectually sophisticated argument offers the possibility of a new morality that will appeal to the millions who have opted out of older, absolute, authoritarian systems.
Choosing between competing moral values:.......2002-03-25
Holloway starts right out giving us a challenge: "What many people have clearly departed from is any sense that the moral life, lived intentionally and consciously, is consistent with blind obedience to any authority, including what is alleged to be divine authority." And things get better from there! This tightly argued book puts into words what many of us seem to struggle with in our discussions of good and evil, sin, and meaning in life.
Holloway has recently stepped down as Bishop of Edinburgh. He is "one of the most outspoken and best-loved figures in the modern church." And I had the privilege of hearing him speak recently at a seminar on the future of faith. It is perhaps because I heard him expound upon his views that I learned so much by going back to read his book. Yet I find the writing to be clear and convincing on its own. I was shocked and pleased to read this from the good Bishop's pen: "Paradoxically, it is scripture itself that calls us to overturn scripture; it is the witness of the living word of Jesus that challenges us to follow the logic that scripture was made for humanity and not humanity for scripture." These are courageous words indeed for a Bishop to write and preach. He deserves praise and support for this stand.
Richard Holloway challenges us on many levels of our daily lives. He changes our concept of how to choose between competing moral values (often good values, not straight good versus straight evil). He makes us think about our institutions of marriage, church, and government as the recipient of our moral judgments and challenges us to live up to the responsibility with a Godless Morality. Excellent book.
Breaks new ground in disentangling morality from theism.......2001-07-06
Bishop Holloway has done us as real service by writing this brilliant and courageous book. By helping us to separate religion and morals, he allows us all to move beyond theistic assumptions about morality to a new liberation. He does so in an engaging way that American readers in particular will appreciate. His clarity and skillful writing will also be a tonic for anyone who enjoys good writing. For those of us in the Church who are are becoming increasingly concerned about the growing dysfunction of conventional Christianity, this book leads us into fresh air.
Another tragic attack from a liberal Bishop.......2000-07-29
Richard Holloway attacks fundamental theology with a series of personal attacks that are unfounded. Many Christians with fundamental beliefs do question their beliefs and think them through and discuss them, and to say that our views of sexuality are from the Gnostic Church defies the writings of many New Testament scholars who say otherwise. It is sad and tragic about the state of the Church today that yet another Bishop can come out with such a piece of work. Thankfully these are in the minority but are very vocal.

Captivating and inspiring.......2005-03-15
A beautifully photographed collection of pocket watches, from very old "oignons" to verge fusee and more modern examples. There's probably a metaphor in the contrast between the highly accurate models with plain exteriors, and the ones where the maker put all the expense into the case and dial but stinted on the internal mechanism. This book would probably not be of interest to the serious collector or historian as it is by no means exhaustive.

Book Description
Today, most intellectuals agree that (a) Christianity has profoundly influenced western culture; (b) members from different cultures experience many aspects of the world differently; (c) the empirical and theoretical study of both culture and religion emerged within the West. The present study argues that these truisms have implications for the conceptualization of religion and culture. More specifically, the thesis is that non-western cultures and religions differ from the descriptions prevalent in the West, and it is also explained why this has been the case. The author proposes novel analyses of religion, the Roman `religio', the construction of `religions' in India, and the nature of cultural differences. Religion is important to the West because the constitution and the identity of western culture is tied to the dynamic of Christianity as a religion.
Customer Reviews:
most misunderstood.......2005-08-27
This work is most misunderstood by those who approvingly cite this, and by those who criticize this work. This misunderstanding has nothing to do with the structure of the book, but everything to do with the nature of any scientific hypothesis. The author has *not* criticized the concept 'religion' because the latter is western: do we think the concept of positron is western? And this book is not a critique of essentialism: entire natural sciences are `essentialistic.' `culture' is not monolithic; of course, species is not monolithic either, yet is amenable to study. What properties of Christianity are ones by virtue of which Christianity is a religion? Here Sweet Willman, in his criticism of the book, presumed that the properties of Christianity = the properties of religion. There are others who criticize it because it conflicts with their intuition. Of course, the author explained the necessity of experiencing religion in India.
Coming back to what the book does: the author identified a set of problems through historical research. Any theory of religion has to solve these problems. The author proposed a hypothesis of religion that solves these problems, and further explains the experience of believers; that shows why one can't study, say, Christianity as religion without being a believer. Then it is showed, one is compelled to do theology in order to study Christianity as a world view. Given this, the author shifted the study to a different level of abstraction: religion as that which generates a configuration of learning. This hypothesis sheds light on various issues: skepticism of Antiquity; origin of natural sciences in the West; vacuous debates of all sorts of relativism; cultural differences; theories of actions; etc. In other words, this theory does generate more problems, and can solve the same problems-in the long run.
The author nowhere did mention that `Hinduism', `Buddhism' etc. are not `something' else but not religions; whatever conceptual gestalts these entities `Hinduism' etc. refer to are non-existent in the way unicorn is.
An excellent book: read it........2000-08-06
It is not often that one reads a book that changes one's outlook drastically. This is one such book. I am really impressed. Sooner or later, the ideas propounded in this book will prove to be a major challenge to many disciplines like anthropology, religious studies, and such like.

A Clear Stream of Reason.......1999-12-12
Although the theory on religion that is submitted in this book is generally found to be highly controversial, Balagangadhara's arguments are so strong that one cannot simply dismiss this theory as intellectual 'spielerei'. His account identifies crucial constraints on Western thinking about other cultures and the social world in general, and convincingly explains why even 'giants and geniusses' have not been able to surmount these constraints. I heartily recommend this fantastic book. In the legendary words of one reader: "it might even change your world view."

Customer Reviews:
The logo design process book we've been waiting for..........2005-08-01
"Logo Lab," the new HOW Design Books release from designer/author Christopher C.H. Simmons, is the identity design book many in the profession have been waiting for to help actually explain the process of creating logos. The book lives up to its subhead by really demonstrating "identity creation from concept to completion" in a clean and beautifully designed format. Simmons, in a conversational style of writing, introduces us to the creative geniuses behind 18 individual identity projects and then takes us through the client meetings, concepting, sketching, scheduling, presentations and execution of the final design for the businesses, organizations and products featured. Along the way the reader is visually stimulated by initial logo scribbles, presentation boards and the end applications for the identities of Converse, the New York City Olympic bid, an NFL team, the Georgia Music Hall of fame and more. From the one-person firm efforts of sports identity specialist Mark Verlander to the teamwork of Ogilvy & Mather's Brand Integration Group, the author takes the viewer to a position of peering over the shoulder of the designers hard at work through his text and vibrant illustrative elements. A favorite chapter is the presentation of Simmon's fascinating interview with the perennially cranky and brilliant Art Chantry, as he explains his working relationship with client Estrus Records - illustrated with 60 logos produced for the company. It is also thrilling to have Simmons include the story and process of his own design for Paradox Media in this volume. His chicken and egg (or is it egg and chicken) design is destined to be a classic - as is this book. From now on, whenever a designer asks for an explanation of the logo design process the easy answer is: "Go buy a copy of "Logo Lab." I do have one gripe about the book. At 144 pages, and with only 18 excellent case studies, the book is far too short. We can only hope that "Logo Lab, Vol. 2" is a future possibility. - Jeff Fisher, Logo Notions, CreativeLatitude.com

Essays about leading documentary filmmaker Philip Hoffman.
Customer Reviews:
excellent collection on fringe film legend.......2005-02-04
A collection of essays, filmmaker rants, interviews and miscellany on or related to the work of Phil Hoffman, Canadian fringe filmmaker and former amateur hockey star. While the quality of the pieces is variable, the volume contains some gems: bits by Jeffrey Paull, Steve Reinke, Mike Hoolboom, Mattias Muller and Mike Cartmell stand out.
If you've ever wondered whatever happened to (what used to be called) the "Underground Cinema," this book offers some versions of an answer.
And besides, what a great title!
