Book Description
The unassuming Sky Plains healer Gilfeather is drawn into the adventure of a lifetime, as he joins a warrior and a sorceress on a quest to overcome a ruthless dunmagicker whose lust for dark power places the entirety of the Glory Isles in danger.
Customer Reviews:
can't read it fast enough.......2007-01-09
Great continuation from the previous story. Larke picks up right were the last was left off. I especially like Larke's choice of telling this story. The novels are written in first person for the most part. What happens is the story is bracketed by letters written by a Kell researcher fifty years in the furture. This researcher is writing to his uncle and sending packets of his research material containing narratives from actual people on the newly discovered Isles of Glory. These papers are written first person accounts of what they witnessed during "the change"fifty years previously. (Of course these accounts are taken from people around 80 years old).
In the second book from Larke, Blaze and Gilfeather are taking turns describing their versions of the story. They describe how Gilfeather becomes entangled in Blaze and Flames problems (no fault of his own--I laughed at the escape scene). Gilfeather is a remarkably likable fellow, regarless of what the researcher says in his letters to his uncle.
I must say, this one has even more action and suspense than the first book. In some cases, it's even a bit darker than the first. But then, what adds a touch of humor to the story is the second, shorter story happening in those letters from the researcher.
It is highly recommended that you read the books in order. These books are not stand alone.
Not your typical fantasy (in my opinion).......2006-04-14
I rarely read fantasy because I find much of it to be dull. And I almost NEVER would touch a fantasy trilogy.
However, when my book group read "The Aware", the first in the "Isles of Glory" trilogy by Glenda Larke, I was immediately drawn into her world of citizens and citizenless (and therefore outcast) halfbreeds and the sweeping changes taking place in a long-standing sea-faring culture.
These books have some of the best world-building and character development I've seen, and there is no "middle book" syndrome associated with "Gilfeather" -- important things happen, the stakes are raised, and certain aspects of the larger storyline achieve some closure.
I would also note that the use of letters from a researcher back to his uncle are an excellent framing device, adding humor of all things to this story. And I agree with another reviewer here who praises Larke's use of a different focus character for this book. Yet we still have the beloved characters from the first book, so we get the best of both worlds.
I recommend the first two books ("The Aware" and "Gilfeather") without reservation. I'm very much looking forward to the third bok ("The Tainted") in June of this year. (Another advantage -- this trilogy was already published in Australia, so we don't have to wait years between books here in the States!)
Can't put it down!.......2006-01-24
I ordered "The Aware" sometime last year when it popped up on one of those "you might also like..." lists here. Amazon was right, I did enjoy it. I just received this second book on Saturday and have snatched every moment I can in order to read. I will probably finish it on the train ride home today and I am very much looking forward to the next book. This trilogy will be one of those that I read more than once simply because the characters are so wonderful.
Glenda does it again.......2005-10-27
Just a repeat of my previous caveat -- Glenda is known to me personally, so it's up to other readers/reviewers to decide if I've remained successfully unbiased.
Gilfeather shows a strong progression in Glenda's writing. It's an interesting twist in the fantasy genre, especially the middle book of a trilogy, taking a brand new character and making (in this case) him the focus of the action. Readers beware: the cover art is misleading with this book. The focus really is on a healer, Gilfeather, whose life and belief system are overturned as a result of his meetings with the characters introduced in the previous book, The Aware.
Gilfeather is a great character, well drawn. The world building continues excellent -- I've said it before, I'll say it again -- nobody in the genre does it better than Glenda. The return of familiar characters from bk 1 is welcome. Tension escalates, the stakes are raised.
Having had the privilege of reading some of Glenda's yet to be published manuscripts, I can say with hand on heart that nobody puts a spin on the fantasy genre the way she does. She has the most unique and refreshing world view, steps far away from the traditional tropes/settings, and is to be congratulated for doing so.

Cosmic Mystical Meditation of a Unique Paleontologist.......2006-04-10
"To interpret adequately the fundamental position of the Eucharist in the economy of the world ... it is, I think, necessary that Christian thought and Christian prayer should give great importance to the real and physical extensions of the eucharistic presence..." Teilhard de Chardin, Mon Univers
Eucharistic Presence:
Edward Schillebeeckx, the eminent Dutch theologian says, "The basis of the entire eucharistic event is Christ's personal gift of himself to his fellow men, and within this, to the Father. This is quite simply his essence-"The man Christ Jesus is the one giving himself" (1 Tim. 2:6). The eternal validity of his history on earth resides in this....The Eucharist is the sacramental form of this event, Christ's giving of himself to the Father and to men. It takes the form of a commemorative meal in which the usual secular significance of the bread and wine is withdrawn and these become bearers of Christ's gift of himself-"
Paleontologist's Meditation:
Fr de Chardin, a Paleontologist in the midst of an expedition out in the Ordos desert, China, in 1923 desired to share the Eucharistic offering on the feast of the Transfiguration, as a Catholic priest. Failing to offer the Mass, he turned to mystical meditation on the radiant presence of Christ in the universe. His thoughts dwelled, to experience his faith in the mystery of the Eucharist as the omnipresence of the divine Word, expressing his feelings in a cosmic hymn. "When Christ comes to one of his faithful, it is not simply in order to commune with him as an individual;...words extend beyond the morsel of bread ... to the whole mystical body of Christ."
The Mass on the World:
In four paragraphs, 'The offering, Fire over the earth, Fire in the earth, Communion, Prayer,' the mystic unfolds his portrayal in enflamed prayer words, "Lord, lock me up in the deepest depth of your heart; and then holding me there, burn me, purify me, set me on fire, sublime me, till I become utterly what You would have me be, through the utter annihilation of my ego." So the proud, defiant self-reliance of man in revolt against God could only be truly redeemed through a Christocentric 'kenotic act' of self emptying.
Benson's Mysticism:
The stories he recounts in the two central chapters, Christ in the World of Matter, and The Spiritual power of Matter, Pere Teilhard has called 'histories,' written in Benson's intimate style that left an impression on him, may have caused de Chardin to be suspect of Pantheistic tendencies. He alludes to St. Paul's expression, 'God being all in all,' which is strictly orthodox, to defends his temperament, even if he could not reconcile his yearnings with his Catholic faith. In the words of his biographer, Nicolas Corte, Pere Teilhard gives his daily offering, 'a cosmic function and planetary dimensions..,'
Book's Impact:
"A truly poetical essay,... at one and the same time mystical and realistic, religious and philosophical." Sir Julian Huxley
'The mystic, the poet use language in a way essentially different from that of the scientists,' in response to this claim, which applies very well to the author of these amazing devotions, M. Maritain, has pointed out that, 'the contrast between the poetical language of the mystic and the scientific language of the theologian, may lead to disastrous conclusions, when reading the former as though it were the latter.'
Hymn of the Universe by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.......2003-10-10
This work describes the power and deep levels of an encounter
with God as told by de Chardin. The reality is that the divine
power of God has influence over the affairs of man.
Here is a popular quotation by de Chardin:
' Blessed be you, universal matter, immeasureable time,
boundless thee triple abyss of stars and atoms and generations; you who by overflow and dissolving our narrow standards or
measurement reveal to us the dimensions of God '
The power of Christ traverses the time line. In addition,
the perfection of the human spirit lies in our personality
not individuality. Love itself brings human beings to perfect
completion in the Divine Order.
eternal song.......2003-03-11
A classic work of mysticism worth returning to time and time again. Explores the interconnectedness of the world in a vibrant, fresh style that proves eternal.
If only more Catholics could give up the dogma and go with the hymn...
A More Advanced Read.......2000-04-06
I have read this book five or six times, and each time i read it, I discover something new that i never noticed before. It talks a lot about relationships between things that happen in the universe, and is a great book... One of the best i have ever read. Allthough, it is a bit more advanced.

Makes Ramprasad come alive.......2002-09-17
I was fortunate enough to attend readings from this book with Lex Hixon present. I was repeatedly struck by the way in which Ramprasad's poetry came alive through Lex's interpretations regardless of whose voice intoned the words. Lex avoided the trap of adhering to literal accuracy in translating poetry by emphasizing the accurate translation of meaning and meter. In hearing and reading this poetry it was easy to imagine myself sharing Ramprasad's ecstatic vision.
Inspirational, Ecstatic, Devotional Poetry.......2000-01-04
This is one of the most inspirational collections of devotional poetry I have ever read. Lex Hixon does an excellent job of expressing the essence of Yoga philosophy and Tantra in poetic English. The combination of the ecstatic musings of the 19th century Bengali poet, Ramprasad and the modern lively English of Lex Hixon has created a masterpiece. I would recommend this book to all interested in the devotional experience of Tantra as well as the Vedanta philosophy. The beauty of the book is that you need not be a scholar to experience the mystical vision of Tantra Yoga.

Book Description
This is a reprint of the 1988 second edition of the standard work on Southeast Asian ceramics. Recent progress in original research and discovery can be summarized into four areas of major importance: first, the identification of Guangdong ceramics as the missing link between the wares of China and those of both Vietnam and Kampuchea; secondly, the unexpected discovery of burial sites in the hills of western Thailand, which contained examples of northern Thai wares rarely seen previously; thirdly the discovery of Burmese glazed ceramics; and finally, new findings from excavations at the Sawankalok kiln site.
In this second edition, the author takes into full account the developments in the last decade to bring her original study up to date, and also takes the opportunity to revise the text where necessary. In addition, a large number of new illustrations, both in color and black and white, have been included together with drawings and maps. The outcome is virtually a new book, completely reset and reillustrated.

Book Description
San Francisco's legendary DJ, Don Sherwood, was the brilliant rebel everyone wants to be. A San Francisco Chronicle bestseller. Herb Caen said, "It is impossible to think of anybody who could come closer than Laurie Harper has in this chronicle of a legendary character who left us laughing through our tears." San Francisco in its hey day.
Customer Reviews:
DON SHERWOOD and SAN FRANCISCO were synonymous! He was It!.......1998-11-29
San Francisco in the '50's was a Sherwood-kind-of-place to be, as Herb Caen might have noted in his Bagdad-by-the-Bay San Francisco Chronicle daily column. KSFO was the City's most popular radio station, and Don Sherwood (nee Danny Cohalen) was the station's #1 gift to the entire San Francisco Bay Area. In the vernacular of today, "Sherwood Ruled!". He was radio's ORIGINAL "Shock Jock", the 50's version of Howard Stern, and more than any station manager could ever deal with or contain. What he did with/to/for the medium of radio could only be experienced if you ever heard the man at play. In commuter-bumper-to-bumper traffic, he'd tell you to roll down your windows and turn up your car radio, then he'd play a siren at full-volumn and scare the oil out of the car in front of you! Here was a Man for All Seasons! Sherwood lived as he died, comedically, on a houseboat, away from the airwaves, alternating puffs off a cigarette with breaths from an oxygen tank, a sad & sorry victim of Emphysema. But lived he did, and when at last his epitaph was etched so valiantly as in these pages, authoress Harper paid High Tribute to He who indeed earned and evoked and bore so deservedly, the Mantle of "The World's Greatest Disc Jockey", Bagdad-by-the-Bay's very own, First in the Field of One, "Out of the Mud grows the Lotus", DON SHERWOOD! Find a copy and read it again and again; Sherwood will come to life for YOU, and YOU will love Don as the rest of us did back in those Halcyon Days of RADIO!

A wonderful reminiscence..........1998-08-24
Laurie Harper had her hands full with this one. How do you describe Don Sherwood's "naughty" laugh, or the leer in his voice, or the effect that Sherwood had on his listeners in San Francisco? It wasn't easy, but Harper did an admirable job, rounding up Don's friends, colleagues and admirers -- including Herb Caen, Russ Couglin, and her husband, the pioneer of airborne traffic reporters, Hap Harper -- and crafted a book that captures much of the flavor and feel of an era that has sadly passed: San Francisco in the late 'Fifties and early 'Sixties, an era to which Sherwood and his KSFO colleagues (Jack Carney, Del Courtney, Al Collins, Buddy Hatton, Gene Nelson, Terry McGovern, Carter B. Smith, Aaron Edwards) provided the soundtrack.
