The lifeline of Melinda Haynes's novel Chalktown is a rutted, meandering dirt road that winds its way past the murky waterways and through the one-shop towns and backwoods of George County, Mississippi. It's also a red flag to anyone looking for a good dose of surreal Southern gothic. Here is the isolated shack of a disintegrating white-trash family, there the village dwellers who communicate solely by writing notes on the chalkboards in their front yards. One character is grotesquely scarred by an adult bout with chicken pox, while others are eaten up by less identifiable diseases and appetites. Dreams are pursued, discarded, and eerily enacted, always in the sort of luscious, graphic prose you would expect from the author of Mother of Pearl.

Perhaps the term family is a misnomer for the Sheehands, a bunch of misfits drawn together by impulse and wrenched apart by hope, desire, and murder. Fairy, the philandering father camped out in an old school bus, can't extricate himself from the burden of "women and their sticky flaws." His wife, Susan-Blair, is slowly burying herself beneath other people's possessions in her makeshift consignment store, even as she neglects her children and chats it up with the ever-present Christ of her Pentecostal upbringing. No wonder 16-year-old Hezekiah sets off down the road to Chalktown in the opening pages of the novel, carrying his disabled brother in a backpack. His encounters along the way make for a Robert Altman-like series of takes on the bizarre nature of reality in George County.

The literary landscape of the Deep South is, of course, teeming with eccentric characters. Yet Haynes's are so fleshed-out that the reader is left feeling almost crowded, like (to quote Susan-Blair) a "durn closet full a somebody else's coats. Coats put there by people who went on to someplace else, some other thing." The author is no less gifted at conveying a sense of place. She uses the colorful brushstrokes of a painter--which she also happens to be--to imbue this story with a dark, sultry, and unmistakably Southern feel. The result is a captivating, consuming read. --S. Ketchum

Book Description

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Mother of Pearl, a beautifully crafted and moving story of redemption and renewal set in 1960s Mississippi.

Melinda Haynes's "first novel of immense and staggering power" (Pat Conroy, author of Beach Music) was an unexpected sensation, chosen for Oprah's book club and selling more than half a million copies in hardcover. Now in the same devastatingly beautiful language that has won her critical and popular acclaim, Melinda Haynes returns to the country she knows so well -- the backwoods South of the 1960s -- to tell the story of a mysterious town and its inhabitants, each with their own afflictions and joys, each with their own secrets.

In sparsely populated George County, Mississippi, along a quiet dirt road lined by sharecropper houses, lies Chalktown -- a small village of folks who communicate mostly through the chalkboards hanging from their front porches. Down the road lives the Sheehand family: 16-year-old Hezekiah, his reckless sister Arena, his mentally disabled younger brother Yellababy, and their disaffected and often cruel mother, Susan Blair, whose husband has abandoned both the house and the family. One day, with Yellababy strapped to his back, Hez sets out for Chalktown, determined to plumb its mysteries, or maybe just to get away from his shabby home's oppressive atmosphere. And, on that same spring day, the family he's left behind will confront a tragedy that at once erases Hez's bitter past and paves the way for a hopeful future. Armed with a gothic and spiritual sensibility reminiscent of Flannery O'Connor, Melinda Haynes weaves her characters' lives and stories into an unforgettable tapestry of sorrow and salvation that confirms her place as one of our country's most exciting and consistently brilliant new writers.

3 out of 5 stars Good Story - Difficult Read.......2007-01-16

The story starts off great, and moves right along, then it gets bogged down in descriptions and thoughts. Made it difficult to remember where you were in the story. I love good descriptions so I can see what is going on - but this was too much. It would have been a better story with less unnecessary description.

5 out of 5 stars Southern flavor for sure.......2006-07-01

At first I had difficulty getting into this book. Just couldn't relate to the characters or circumstances. But after about 75 pages, it took substance and I read and read and read. Would highly recommend this book. It has merit, humor, and gives the reader something to ponder. I liked it so well, I purchased Mother of Pearl. Hope it compares as well.

4 out of 5 stars "It takes a stranger to find a good -for -nothin husband.".......2006-02-03

this is the second book I've read from this author. The first was "Willem's Field" which I wrote a review dated January 4,2006.It had an overall review of 4 1/2 stars, based on 11 reviews. The reviews are very interesting as they approach the book in many different ways.I haven't read her book "Mother of pearl";but did read quite a few of the reviews. It had an overall review of 3 stars, from 241 reviewers. However, the reviews are all over the map;and the helpful votes are all over the map as well.
I mention this because there is no doubt that her books have a totally different affect on different people. It was the same with me.I really enjoy fiction of the Deep South and the more earthy, the better.I have read nearly everything Erskine Caldwell wrote, and enjoy his writings immensely. It seems few know of or read him today;"Tobacco Road" and "God's Little Acre" are his best known.
Chalktown is a lot like Erskine's novels.Character development, local language and thinking are the major elements in these stories. It almost seems to me that the plot, story lineand in this case the mystery of whodunnit is only used as an excuse for something to use for the elements. In fact, even half way throuhh the book there was essentially no plot, just the development of the elements I mentioned.
The book is loaded with great lines such as;
"I guess things get tangled up before they make themselves
right again--"

"Well, you can leave now.I've told you everything there is to
tell and what trouble there is,is mine.It aint yours."

"I know she'll be back.It's what she'll be back with that's
got me worried."

"Never had no use for folks.I like my dawg, though."

"just 'cause a man's a idiot, don't mean he caint learn."

"Look like you got sent to hell and then kicked back out again.
Too ugly even for them."

So,to sum up,if you like Deep South, down and out, earthy writing, filled with talk straight from the heart;you should like this book,I know I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!! .......2005-01-09

I found Chalktown to be one of the most riviting books I have read. You can feel her characters they are so vivid. I read Mother Of Pearl, which is such a favorite that I have the hardcover, softcover, CD and audio and knew Ms Haynes was the best of the best authors. I am anxious for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Blackboard Jungle, Backwoods Style.......2003-10-06

On a hot summer morning in the Mississippi backwoods, sixteen-year-old Hezekiah straps his mentally retarded younger brother Yellababy to his back and heads out to Chalktown, even though he's been warned about how strange the small village down road is.

Because of the unsolved murder in 1955 of one of their neighbors, Chalktown's other three residents are highly suspicious of each other and they don't talk among themselves. When they have to communicate, they write on blackboards propped up in front of their houses and the rest of the world stays away.

Haynes explores people and situations in a part of the world many of us know nothing about and would probably tend to ignore if we did. She draws us in with excellent characterization and description so good it'll make you cry. This is a five star book everybody should read.

2 out of 5 stars First one wasn't horrible, Second Omnibus is worse........2007-03-10

Classic mistake many fantasy writers make-- build up characters the reader likes and relates to in the first novels, then try to continue the series through children and other strangers to the reader. Roberson takes this to the extreme, in this convuluded second omnibus. Not worth the time (its long) because our favorite charactrs take a back seat.

    1 out of 5 stars A painful read.......2004-01-19

This is only the second book I've had to put down without finishing it (The first being the latest in Jordan's Wheel of Time series). The characters cause their own problems by being so stupid.

Here's an example. Let me see if I got this right...The King's wife is a witch living in guarded exile because, among other things, she:

    a) Plotted his downfall with the enemy
    b) Tried to kill him (a few times)
    c) Committed adultery and got pregnant with the powerful enemy evil sorcerer.
    d) Is evil, untrustworthy, and will be-witch anyone but the Cheysuli.

Does this King not have any advisors? - perhaps someone around with a little common sense? Hey, I have an idea... Wouldn't it make sense for the King to send his 14 year old daughter, (his own daughter, not the child mentioned in point 'c' above), away to be with this witch for a FEW YEARS!!! Sounds like a great idea. (yes/no?)

Or how about the scene where there's an emergency and everyone is rushing back to the Keep and they bump into Duncan, the long dead tribe leader. Now this is within walking distance of their keep, and 15 years after he is supposed to be dead. Shouldn't some warning bell go off here (even a little one)? Shouldn't someone clue in that this doesn't make sense? Is there anyone out there that read this book that didn't have the first thought go through their mind - "This looks like a trap, Trap, TRAP!!!". But our characters don't clue in. In fact, they decide that it would be a worthwhile risk to release enough magic that it could potentially destroy the planet in order to fall into the trap, err, I mean, in order to try to help Duncan.

Sorry, I couldn't read any further. The rave reviews for book one raised my curiosity, and I trudged through it. I could only make it through 176 pages of book two.

2 out of 5 stars Books three and four perhaps the weakest of the series.......2002-04-10

The remember really enjoying the first four books of the Cheysuli Chronicles the first time I read them as a teenager.

After the omnibus editions came out I re-read the first four so that I could continue on to (previously unread) books five through eight. That, however, might have been a mistake, as I almost gave up, I was so disgusted with the perpetually cycling dynastic plot. Just too many unfulfilled romances, unwilling crown princes and altogether too much holier-than-thou Cheysuli arrogance.

Books one and two are great, and the series gets better, but books three and four are, IMHO, the weakest of the Cheysuli Chronicles.

4 out of 5 stars Even in the middle it's a good intro.......2001-07-09

This is actually the place I started the series the first time around, _Legacy of the Sword_ is the first book I read. Did I not get a few things? Sure. Was I totally lost? Nope. Ms. Roberson is a good writer and she gave enough information in summary that while you knew you missed something it wasn't a plot-stopper. All that being said, this is a great introduction to the world of the Cheysuli. Politics are at a high boil and parts of it are set in an urban enviroment that you don't often see elsewhere in the series, so you get to see what the 'common man' thinks of all the change that is swirling around him.

I like Ms. Roberson's style. Not too lush but not too spare either, she gives you plenty of concrete details to hang your imagination on. I liked this one enough to go read her other series and wait impatiently for her to finish this one. The only drawback is that it is clearly part of a long series and while you can pick up anywhere, you can't really walk away at the end of any one book and feel satisfied. Each generation overlaps the next and the past one, great for continuity, not so great for the wallet.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Roberson always a good bet!.......2001-06-24

While the omnibuses are actually reprints of the ealier works, they are still a must for sci-fi/fantasy readers. Jennifer Roberson has created a world full of magic, mystery and prophecy that can easily share a shelf with Tolkien and other favorites in my library. The books span several generations and take you through a realm filled with characters that come to life and take hold of your imagination and never let go. Even though a work of fiction, the trials, tribulations and loss suffered by the characters give the books a feeling of realism rarely found in books where good always wins over evil and everyone lives happily ever after. This series is definetly a must have.

Note: It is best if the books are read in order, as the story can be confusing if you start reading in the middle.

    Book Description

Divinity in Disguise is a first-of-a-kind collection of "nested meditations"--not quite a poem, not quite a prayer, not quite like anything you've read before. This book contains 76 of these new meditations, each accompanied by a brief reflection and soul-stirring quotations. Divinity in Disguise contains meditations on God, the sacred self, relationships, money, work, brokenness, sex, death, joy and more.

A nested meditation is a brief, accessible written meditation that begins with a single line, then adds one line at a time. As each line is added, the meaning of the piece shifts. Here's a sample (note that nested meditations are untitled):

    Do you have the time?

    Do you have the time
    of your life?

    Do you have the time
    of your life
    or does someone else perhaps?

    Do you have the
    time of your life
    or does someone else? Perhaps
    it's later than you think.

The idea is to use simple language and subtle wordplay to probe several layers of meaning beneath the surface of our day-to-day experience.

    Find still water.

    Find still water
in any storm by going deep.

    Find still water
in any storm by going deep
    beneath the surface tumult.

    Find still water
in any storm by going deep.
    Beneath the surface tumult
the sacred self dances like seaweed.

5 out of 5 stars A New Way to Think about Spiritual Things.......2007-04-04

Anderson's nested meditations are delightful. I have been encouraged to try writing my own, using his suggestions. When I have had significant personal experiences that I want to capture with words, nested meditations cause me to reflect both backward and forward. Writing such a meditation requires that an event is captured in an economy of words.

I truly appreciate the short pieces Anderson writes that tell what led up to his own nested meditatiions. While Anderson doesn't suggest doing so for the meditations the reader may write, it seems like a sound practice.

5 out of 5 stars More delightful and insightful everytime I read it!!.......2003-11-30

I have now read this book three times. Each time I read it, I am amazed by how it continues to move and inspire me. I have given the book to several of my friends. They now want to meet as a group to discuss the meditations because they enjoyed them so much. As a psychotherapist, I have shared some of the nested meditations with my clients who have benefitted from their poignant insights. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Touched to the Core.......2003-11-19

I was deeply inspired by Kevin Anderson's book. I found his nested meditations to be both creative and profound. While I had the tendency at the beginning to rush through the meditations and look for the "punchline" at the end, I gradually learned that the process of slowly going through the meditations and grasping the meaning of each new section was worth the effort.

The biggest surprise for me was that I thought that the accompanying reflections would be somewhat superficial compared to the profundity of the nested meditations. I was delighted to discover that these reflections were every bit as inspirational and packed with meaning as the meditations themselves.

Reading Kevin's book is like taking a walk with a spiritual mentor down the path of life. His vulnerablity, and williness to explore both the dark and light sides of life, makes the book that much more engaging.

I encourage anyone who is interested in being invited to delve deeply into the mysteries and majic of life to read Kevin's book. It is sheer delight and a real gift to the world.

5 out of 5 stars You will see differently.......2003-11-11

The Holy is everywhere and Kevin Anderson's nested meditations are a perfect way to see more clearly. You will see the ordinary is not so ordinary when you read his meditations and accompanying short essays. His reflections on ordinary moments in his life have sparked my own reflections. The nested meditation form that he has created is really a helpful way of sitting with our daily experience to discover the Divine in it.

I have written my own nested meditations to help process my life situations, given the book to friends, used it with clients. It works ar all levels to help us see the Divine in the disguise of the ordinary. Don't miss this beautiful book of discovery!

5 out of 5 stars A 'Must Read' for Spiritual Seekers!.......2003-10-25

This book is a springboard for me to discover my God in new and surprisingly special ways. I have been blessed by the author's profound insights into ways God is present in 'ordinary' relationships and encounters. I have gifted six friends with copies of this book. For me to read this book is to have my whole self rearranged as I meet my God. Thank you, Kevin Anderson!!

    Book Description

In her first book, Living Cuisine, Rene Loux showed how nutritious and satisfying raw foods cuisine can be. Now she takes a broader look at the benefits of a diet rich in natural, whole foods. Under the banner of nutritional cross-training, Rene outlines the basic principles of such dietary plans as macrobiotics and Ayurveda, and dishes up flavorful whole foods recipes for optimal healthincluding Ratatouille Thin Crust Pizza, Roasted Spring Vegetable Salad, and Lemon Vanilla Ginger Snapswith a nod to gluten-free living, blood sugar balance, and boosted immunity. You are what you eat, Rene explains, but you are also what you use to clean your house and your skin, and so sprinkled throughout the book readers will find ideas for introducing the whole-foods philosophy to their home and beauty routines, including tips for composting and choosing a healthy water filter. When Living Cuisine appeared, Alicia Silverstone applauded Renes recipes, saying: Incredibly rich and delicious and full of health and restorative energy, her food is medicine. Part eco-friendly cookbook and part organic lifestyle guide, this new book reflects that same spirit, while presenting the essential elements of living well through whole foods, and living responsibly for a sustainable future.

This is a fabulous cookbook with a great mix of cooked/raw foods. Most recipes won't take all night to prepare. Great ideas for healthy cleaners, too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipe Book!!.......2007-03-26

The Balanced Plate (2006) WOW! I am thrilled! Her new book has 150 of her brilliant recipes. I have probably made 50+ from her last book Living Cuisine and really enjoyed them. Most of them only require the food processor. The Balanced Plate has a prettier format, is slightly larger and is more inclusive of other veggie diets. She uses a simple icon method to code which recipes are raw-friendly, etc. I still hang on her last book for recipes I didn't find in the new one, so there, get both, they are an incredible value.

My experience is that RAW recipe books written by professional raw chefs have the best recipes. So far, I continue to think hers is the very best for many reasons. Her dishes are the best tasting I have ever had in my life. They are simple and yet they are combinations I have never thought of before. It is a disappointment to read Raw recipes that I already thought of on my own. Her directions are so clear it is impossible to mess them up. Her books are very well organized and have tons of information in them.

Her books offer a delicious way to be a rawfoodist even without a juicer or dehydrator. If you don't want recipes that require a dehydrator or a juicer that is fine, those dishes are primarily separated into other chapters. You don't have to weed them out and the majority of the recipes do not require them. She gives heating gently instructions.

A few recipes from her new book:
Last night I made one of her new nori roll dishes: replace the rice with a jicama, parsnip, pine nut mix; mixed in the food processor - Delicious!! I also made her wasabi sauce and next will be the pickled ginger.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Wellness.......2007-01-11

This book was a recent Christmas gift and I must say that my mother and I have been unable to put it down since. Even non-vegetarians such as ourselves can enjoy the delicious variety of recipes. The first section of the book educates the reader on environmental issues and the importance of organics. We've always kept a conscious eye out for organic products, however after reading we've come to understand how important they really are.

My critique of cookbooks usually includes availability of ingredients. While not available in the average grocery store, I was able to conviently find almost everything in Wild Oats. Depending on your cooking style you may have many of these ingredients in your cabinet already.

This cookbook is a guide for healty living and delicious eating. Its a must for anyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Balanced Plate: The Essential Elements of Whole Foods and Good Health.......2007-01-03

For me it was excelent, a complete easy guide to understand the principles of the raw and vegetarian food and the truth of the real deal with the rest of the things we eat.
