Book Description
'I had but that one arrow ', says Chotti Munda, the hero of this epic tale. A 'magic' arrow that stood for the pride, the wisdom, the culture of their society, a society threatened with inevitable disintegration as its traditional structures crumbled under the assault of 'national development'.The wide sweep of this important novel encompasses many layers. It ranges over decades in the life of Chotti - the central character - in which India moves from colonial rule to independence and then to the unrest of the 1970s. It probes and uncovers the complex web of social and economic exchange based on power relations. It traces the changes, some forced, some welcome, in the daily lives of a marginalized rural community. And at its core, it celebrates Chotti, legendary archer, wise and farsighted leader, proud role model to his younger brethren.Written in 1980, this novel is remarkable for the manner in which it touches on vital issues that have, in subsequent decades, grown into matters of urgent social concern. It raises questions about the place of the tribal on the map of national identity, land rights and human rights, the 'museumization' of 'ethnic' cultures, and the justifications of violent resistance as the last resort of a desperate people.
Book Description
Can a powerless witch find happiness with an arrogant, impatient dragon? If the dragon has his way, she sure as hell will. Book 2 in the award-winning Dragon Kin series! Talaith's life has never been easy. A goddess has forced her into servitude. Her husband despises her. And all those in her tiny village fear her. But just when she doesn't think her life can get any worse, she's pulled from her bed one morning to be burned at the stake for being a witch. What she never counted on was a terrifying silver dragon deciding to rescue her. Briec the Mighty didn't really know what to do with a human female. Especially this one. Chatty and a bit of a complainer, he doesn't understand why she can't simply admit to herself that she wants him. Who wouldn't? He was Briec the Mighty after all. Females fought to spend the night in his arms. But this one tiny woman with her many secrets and her annoying habit of referring to him as "arrogant" has turned his simple dragon life upside down. WARNING: This story contains explicit monogamous sex and graphic violence!

Humouros, and exciting .......2007-09-20
I enjoyed reading this book. The characters were well fleshed out and the story was engrossing. I didn't stop reading until I finished. Yeah I do that. Great read, fantasy but with a nice story that left me wanting to read it again.
Prepare to laugh yourself silly........2007-09-11
Move over Mary Janice Davidson, there's a new queen of comedy in town.
Talaith's life has pretty much sucked up till now. She's basically living in servitude to a goddess with a husband who hates her. Whatever, she's less than fond of him to. But there's that old adage that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger so she's going to handle things with grace never realizing that the kill you part might be closer than she thought. Dragged from her bed one morning she finds her faithless husband and spineless fellow villagers preparing to burn her at the stake for being a witch. Just perfect. Then she's rescued by a silver dragon, also known as Briec the Almighty, who promptly decides to keep her. Briec is somewhat perplexed. The woman should be throwing herself at her feet in gratitude but all he gets it moaning and negativity. What's a dragon to do? Drug her with sex until she can't think straight and the only word leaving her mouth is yes? Shame that doesn't work. Talaith leads Briec on a merry chase full of sass and sizzle, and you'll be left wanting more from this fun mismatched couple.
Book 2 of the Dragon Kin.......2007-08-13
I was surprised at how very good this book was, I loved it! My only complaint is the book cover could have been better.
Intriging.......2007-06-11
I loved reading this book... It was totally different from the type of books I am use to reading. I am so looking forward to the next book from this collection by Shelly Laurenston.
Bought it for the cover.......2007-04-05
I just could not get into this book. After several attempts to read I had to finally say that I just did not feel that the characters had enough depth to be enticing. However, I sure was captured by the cover!

Book Description
Beginning with the classic Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey has created a complex, endlessly fascinating world uniting humans and great telepathic dragons. Millions of devoted readers have soared on the glittering wings of Anne’s imagination, following book by book the evolution of one of science fiction’s most beloved and honored series. Now, for the first time, Anne has invited another writer to join her in the skies of Pern, a writer with an intimate knowledge of Pern and its history: her son, Todd.
DRAGON’S KIN
Young Kindan has no expectations other than joining his father in the mines of Camp Natalon, a coal mining settlement struggling to turn a profit far from the great Holds where the presence of dragons and their riders means safety and civilization. Mining is fraught with danger. Fortunately, the camp has a watch-wher, a creature distantly related to dragons and uniquely suited to specialized work in the dark, cold mineshafts. Kindan’s father is the watch-wher’s handler, and his son sometimes helps him out. But even that important job promises no opportunity outside the mine.
Then disaster strikes. In one terrible instant, Kindan loses his family and the camp loses its watch-wher. Fathers are replaced by sons in the mine–except for Kindan, who is taken in by the camp’s new Harper. Grieving, Kindan finds a measure of solace in a burgeoning musical talent . . . and in a new friendship with Nuella, a mysterious girl no one seems to know exists. It is Nuella who assists Kindan when he is selected to hatch and train a new watch-wher, a job that forces him to give up his dream of becoming a Harper; and it is Nuella who helps him give new meaning to his life.
Meanwhile, sparked by the tragedy, long-simmering tensions are dividing the camp. Far below the surface, a group of resentful miners hides a deadly secret. As warring factions threaten to explode, Nuella and Kindan begin to discover unknown talents in the misunderstood watch-wher–talents that could very well save an entire Hold. During their time teaching the watch-wher, the two learn some things themselves: that even a seemingly impossible dream is never completely out of reach . . . and that light can be found even in darkness.

Dragon's Kin.......2007-07-17
It was just a minor challenge to switch to Todd's writing style as opposed to Anne's. Todd deffinately was familiar with the whole of Pern, and after the first chapter or so, you can just cruise through the story. A fitting following for the next generation.
Great if you like Sci Fiction.......2007-05-13
The Pern series of books from Anne McCaffery are great. Better if you read them in order, (look online at her website for recommendations). This is futuristic science fiction, but if you liked Aregon, you would probably like this series too
Watchwhers can do *what*?.......2007-02-09
I bought this book with high hopes for the continuing saga of Pern. All I can say at this point is that Todd obviously has a "get out of canon free" card. The characters were mildly interesting, but I found myself shaking my head over the number of times he "Mary Sues" the watchwhers. Part of what makes Pern, Pern, are the dragons, whers and firelizards. When the basic design and function are changed, and extra abilities are added to the unique creatures (like the whers), it makes me not want to continue reading the series.
I have just about *every* Pern book out there (including the hard-to-find "The People of Pern") but I will not be adding any of these collaborations to my collection of Pernese gems.
Well, Todd has to start somewhere.......2007-02-01
What a legacy for a son and new author. A ready made world to work with. Anne McCaffery has created a fantasy world that has entertained me since the very first book. And she is passing that torch on to her son.
As his first attempt, Todd did a pretty good job. Howerver, it seems that whenever a book is co-authored, the results are a little mixed. And in this case, they had a tough challenge. Are there any new story lines for this planet?
What I loved about this book is the Watch whers have been ignored, by the author and the characters. And Wind Blossom has been reviled for not being as good as her mother when she created these ugly creatures that were not as cool as dragons.
Dragon's Kin tells the story of how watchwhers were originally used and what their talents are in the role of protecting Pern and it's people. I was excited to learn that they can be impressed and bonded to humans and that they can fly and kill thread. What a "revelation". But just how did this information ever get lost? That is a little off.
I like the book as I like most of the Pern series. I am willing to see what Todd can do on his own.
A fan of McCaffrey & Pern.......2007-01-21
This book is "in the tradition" of the great saga of Pern & it's dragons. For all of us McCaffrey fans the book/the story fills in the gap between significant events and storylines in the lives of "dragonfolk" and those that they protect. For fans who found the books that delt with discoveries and pioneers of "First Landing" in the Southern area of Pern the story is plausible and pleasing.
I'm far from being a child, I am a fantasy fan who prefers not to read about odd ugly creatures(to me the dragons are odd but exempt from "ugly") so the stories of pern create another world that is not too bizarre to be entertaining. As a former libray assistant I got hooked because McCaffrey's books were in both the children's collection and the adult collections. I started reading to find out why. I'm hooked for life. I hope that Mom And Son persevere.

Book Description
This collection of literary short fiction combines fantasy, science fiction, and horror in vivid settings, peopled with ordinary humans with normal relationships, and the interaction of the mundane with the fantastic. In "Breathmoss," a young girl must cope with the relationship with her family, love, and a community set in rigid custom, where males are a rarity. In "Verglas," a man must decide to leave his humanity by going native on an ice world or abandon his family. The events leading to the formation of the current government, the repression of Jews and homosexuals, and the horrors of being a closet homosexual in such a regime are examined in "The Summer Isles." Other stories encompass a scientist who searches for extraterrestrial intelligence; a rigid, aged man finding magic by a pool; and an 18-year-old girl who gains the reputation of being a death flower during WWII.

Male, female, so what........2005-09-18
"Once more, in that familiar welling, she felt sorry for him. Men were such strange, sad creatures; forever fighting, angry, lost...."
The point of this story seems to be that an all- (or mostly-) female society wouldn't be that much different from a bisexual one, except that divorcing sex (Lesbian sex occurs) from reproduction would erase the need for formally structured unions like marriage. Doing away with the institutions of marriage and the nuclear family, however, does not lead to some blissful utopia, just to a society without marriage. Children are raised in extended families called haramleks. There are only two male characters, who are regarded with wary tolerance.
Literary genre fiction at its finest........2005-04-22
Breathmoss and Other Extractions is a superb short story collection by the British author Ian MacLeod. MacLeod uses Science Fiction and Fantasy to examine the human condition. These are classic short stories that harken back to an earlier time, where plot, setting and character all are given equal importance-a breath of fresh air from the 'epiphany' fiction that currently crowds mainstream magazines.
The titular Breathmoss is a novella about a young girl growing up in a far-future, mostly matriarchal society on a distant world. It's a slow-moving piece. The girl meets a rare human male and forms a friendship with him; falls in love with another girl, has her heart broken; and decides what her future destiny will be in the course of the novella. The imagined future is rich and strange, with sentient seas, strange aliens, and obscure technology. It bears the influence of Ursula LeGuin. The passage of time, and personal sacrifice-along with growing pains-are the major ingredients of this story. The Chop Girl, set in a World War II England, is a Typhoid Mary tale. The narrator is a young woman who has joined the war effort, and has gradually gained the reputation of having bad luck: every man she dates ends up dying in the various war missions. She meets up with a maverick pilot who appears to be indestructible. Period flavor and a solid first person narrative from the female point-of-view are the strong points. The Noonday Pool is brief story about the chance encounter with an aging composer and a wild child who may or may not be a fairy. Isabel of the Fall is an SF fairytale, set in the same world as Breathmoss. It is reminiscent of Gene Wolfe's excellent Book of the New Sun series in that technology and magic are indistinguishable from one another. It's a beautiful future myth about forbidden love and secret knowledge. The Summer Isles, the closing novella, is an alternate history piece about a closeted gay man in a fascist Britain (where they lost WW2) of the 1940's. Protagonist is an Oxford professor who was once the lover of the fascist leader. The plot twists and turns of the story are amazing, and MacLeod captures the voice of a repressed homosexual, and the since of dangerous desire, very well. The glory of Greater Britain, and the clandestine brutality of the alternate history are utterly believable.
MacLeod writes beautifully. His style and sentences are pleasurable to read-he is as much influenced by Thomas Hardy as he is by Arthur Clarke (name-dropped in one of the stories, "New Light on the Drake Equation"). His style is musical, rich, and elegiac.

A Wonderful Tool for Prayer........2006-06-13
I've been a Christian for over 20 years. I've had no problem reading and re-reading my Bible or going to church regularly, or going to group Bible studies. However, my prayer life was little to non-existent. I was bored and unfocused. I found myself repeating the same "bless me" prayers over and over, and they didn't seem to be getting answered, so I was discouraged even further. I imagine God himself wasn't impressed either. I've read different books on prayer throughout the years, even prayer books by themes, that practically wrote them out for you but all it felt like was just reading out of a book, which is exactly what it was. I've been using this particular book for over a week, and I am so encouraged. It is in an easy to use format which makes sense and puts Praise first, confession of sin second, and so on, and lists hundreds of scriptures. So you can make your own prayers with these scriptures. Her sample prayers are short, sweet and to the point so you can easily reword them in your own style, but they conform perfectly to the scriptures. There is a systematic way to pray and you can cover the whole thing in about 20 minutes, once you "get it." However, I have been spending most of my time in the Praise section to get familiar with this wonderful book and to focus on those scriptures more. It has helped me to better visualize the riches we really do have in Him. As a result of meditating on these scriptures in the mornings and praying them back to God, I have felt uplifted and encouraged, and my heart is more compassionate toward other people. I feel happier and more confident. I feel more aware, and more thankful for what God has done for me. I find myself thinking about what pleases Him more even througout the day. I used to feel like I had two lives.....my Christian life at home and at church with my little two-bit "bless me" prayers, and my secular life at work and facing the world. Now I feel myself wanting to be what God wants me to be all the time, not just when it seems convenient. For me, this book is an answered prayer. There IS a correct way to pray, and this book presents an excellent blueprint. I thank God that He has used this author to communicate His Word in such an effective yet simple way to encourage us to do what He wants us to do.
great tool.......2006-03-17
This book has really helped me in my study on prayer. To be able to get answers to your prayers is actually knowing the word of God. You have to speak to God in his language. Thank you
Real help in praying.......2005-09-20
Most of us who are Christians would not describe ourselves as "prayer warriors," yet we want to learn how to pray better.
Mrs. Grant's book takes us quickly to find help in actually doing it, pulling us beyond our own laundry list of needs and wants to worship, confession, praying for others, etc.
And for those of us who find difficulty finding the words to say, she give us help from the best source of all, the Scriptures.

PRAYING IN THE WORD OF GOD: Advancing Christ's Kingdom by Kathleen G. Grant
(Winner of the USA BOOK NEWS "Best Books 2004" Award for best book in religion.)
In Praying in the Word of God: Advancing Christ's Kingdom, Kathleen G. Grant explains not only the importance of prayer, but also the methods one should use in order to pray according to God's will. Grant shows us how, through the use of scriptures during prayer, we can be drawn closer to the Lord.
The main emphasis throughout all of Grant's teaching is how many aspects of our lives prayer affects, and how many people are changed by it. As we use her method of praise, confession, and prayer, our hearts will open to unknown needs within ourselves and a passion for the broken spirits of others around the world.
This book offers a gift to those not familiar with Scripture, those not comfortable with prayer, or those searching for the time to pray effectively. It provides us with a time-efficient system of prayer to get the most out of our time with God, without losing the meaning. Each part of this prayer program is explained with clarity and easy-to-follow instructions. Grant makes it personal by allowing room for our own thoughts, objectives and concerns. She also brings the world to our doorstep. She not only shows us how to pray for other nations, she also produces a picture of those nations through the use of maps and charts.
I now find myself in an unusual place as a result of reading this book. I can no longer use the excuse, "I don't know how to pray," or "There is not enough time to pray." I have been shown how to pray and that it takes very little time. She has given us a reason to pray and has shown us the way. I would encourage you to use this book, not only to enhance your own prayer life, but also as a tool for impacting the world.

praying in the word of god.......2004-07-27
Using Praying in the Word of God has enhanced and directed my prayer life immensely. Kathies prayers are so beautiful, especially when I'm at a loss for words. This book uses scripture as the basis for prayer. Her scriptural and prayer usage is profound-I pray God continues to use her & her gifts all over the world.

Book Description
Includes advice on designing, selecting natural materials, assembling, and detailing functional and fun feeders and housing for bluebirds, chickadees, wrens, and more.
Book Description
Space, light and material: from the meditative ambiance of a chapel or synagogue to the colourful, organic forms of fashion boutiques, the design of an interior space - composed of lighting, the surfaces, textures and colours of materials, finishing and features - creates atmosphere and lends specific character. The growing willingness on the part of designers in recent years to experiment with colours, materials and spatial concepts is demonstrated in the range and diversity of international examples presented in this, the third volume in the series "In Detail". All plans and drawings of interiors and furnishings have been carefully researched and drawn by the staff of DETAIL. Three introductory essays by expert authors are followed by 28 exemplary case-studies by such names as Alvaro Siza, Future Systems, Dominique Perrault, and Herzog & de Meuron.

Great Book.......2007-10-12
Very informative and gives a clear precise description of varying types on renovation and adaptive reuse.
best volume in the best detail architecture books available.......2007-08-25
This book is part of a deliriously excellent series of Birkhauser's In
Detail collection, a series of books emphasizing and celebrating the importance of architectural details and the susbsequent spatial magic that emerges from the vigilant attention to design craft. I must say its excellence SHAMES the building culture of The united States of Kitsch. The level of American work in the field of architecture, by comparison, is stunted, nostalgic to the point of senility, and plastic garbage overseen by power broker idiot clients. Sadly, it's painfully, pathetically true, and these books prove it as a matter of course. Why are we (American) practitioners, builders, teachers, students, clients, laypeople, basically everyone really SO ill informed about design????
Don't we care?? Is there so much discord and disagreement?? It's puzzling.
Get these books and feast on the International wisdom; let's get half a clue.
great source.......2007-08-21
The book was exactly as I expected, high quality, detailed explanations in the Caliber of detail magazine. I will defiantly be purchasing the other books in this series.
Sometimes opaque, but great projects.......2007-01-05
I found the essays on simple construction to be variable in quality...The chapters on wood and steel either suffered in translation or were student composition exercises to begin with. The projects illustrated, however, are of uniformly high quality, and are documented with Detail's typical precision. For an American architect, many of the projects using wood construction will be eye openers. The stone and clay construction projects are wonderful for daydreaming about a different building culture in this country. Well worth it for the photos and drawings.
a very informative architectural detail review on residential.......2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat residential building design in detail , shape, and material. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in modernism or minimalism on housing and who desire to improve the residential detil design to be more insighfully clean and blight. As well, the analysis from the publication could be developed to function in other architecture types.
