What did you think the book was? The title is in Spanish!!
Spanish translation of Joy Luck Club.......2004-06-04
I don't know why the Amazon website doesn't state that this is a Spanish translation of The Joy Luck Club. I was going to order it, thinking that it was a new book from Amy Tan. Thank goodness I googled the title and found out it's actually not a new book. In any case, I have not read the Spanish translation, so I can't speak to the quality of it, but I really enjoyed the original English version.

Acclaimed writer and editor Robert Silverberg gathered 11 of the finest writers in fantasy to contribute to this collection of short novels. Each of the writers was asked to write a new story based on one of his or her most famous series, and the results are wonderful. From Stephen King's opening piece set in his popular Gunslinger universe to Robert Jordan's early look at his famed Wheel of Time saga, these stories are exceptionally well written and universally well told. The authors include King, Jordan, and Silverberg himself, as well as Terry and Lyn Pratchett, Terry Goodkind, Orson Scott Card, Ursula K. Le Guin, Tad Williams, George R.R. Martin, Anne McCaffrey, and Raymond E. Feist. This is not only a great book in and of itself, but it's also a perfect way for fantasy fans to find new novels and authors to add to their "to read" lists. --Craig E. Engler

Feist's Riftwar Saga is the setting of the tale of "The Wood Boy."

One story stands above..........2007-09-05
I bought this book when it first came out as a member of the Sci-Fi Book Club, mostly because of the then-recognized names of Stephen King and Orson Scott Card. I read their stories first, and while they were both good, neither would make my list of the 'best of the best' short stories or novellas. I then went about reading the rest of the book, and was simply bowled over by George RR Martin's 'The Hedge Knight'. It towered over the other works in the collection, and in many circles is considered among the very best short works of fantasy fiction ever produced. I subsequently went out and purchased the books from the 'Ice and Fire' series that the story is part of, and have been amazed at the quality of the writing. It is amusing now to look back and see that Martin's name wasn't even featured on the cover of this book, a situation that was quickly remedied in the 'sequel'. I highly recommend this book, simply for the one story, though I'm certain that any serious fan of fantasy will find the other works to be enjoyable too.
This is just part of the original book.......2007-03-24
This book may well be worth more than one star, but I wanted your attention because...
I wanted to help redirect potential Amazon buyers to the book they are looking for. The book that I read had 11 short stories by 11 different authors. It seems that several people were looking for that book when they bought this one.
This edition of the book seems to contain only 4 short stories. There are other editions that contain the missing stories and complete the collection (Legends 2 : Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy and Legends-Vol. 3 Stories By The Masters of Modern Fantasy (Legends (Tor))), but if you want the original, here is how you find that book on Amazon.
First, it must have this information:
Hardcover: 708 pages
Publisher: Tor Books; 1st ed edition (August 25, 1998)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0312867875
ISBN-13: 978-0312867874
You can look it up under the ISBN or click on the following link (Legends: Stories By The Masters of Modern Fantasy). Note how many pages it has and, also, that Amazon lists the author of this book as the author of the first story in the book, Stephen King.
Hope that helps you find what you are looking for.
(If you search inside the book featured here, and you look at the back cover, you will see that you only get four stories. The book I directed you to has more authors and stories listed on the back cover--but no option to view it. However, I know it is the right ISBN because I got it directly from the copy I read.)
stories are missing!.......2007-02-25
the description says it has the pratchett story in it, but it doesn't. it only has 4 of the original 11. what a rip-off!
Well Done.......2005-10-02
It is impossible to comment on each story and keep this brief. I will just say that this is a great way to sample many fine authors and their established fantasy settings all in one book and for one price. Then you can decide if you want to spring for all the Gunslinger books or Riftwar, or any of the fine settings of these authors. Above average all the way around.
HEY! ( spoilers ).......2005-04-14
I have to say, you guys are pathetic. I think the one thing that I have to give Mr. King credit for, is fooling us all. How many people guessed the ending? Did anyone guess it? I didn't think so. Everyone is talking about how much it disappointed them, well don't read his books that's what happens. He also told you right at the end, if you read on you will be surely disappointed. Well hey, i'm not disappointed at all. Roland killed everyone for that Tower, every damn person he knew. He didn't know what was in it, didn't know what it was, didn't know what he was going to do when he got there. He did it all for himself. Now why not make him reach the tower 1,000,000 times over and over as punishment?
2nd of all, I have a new breakthrough for you all. The horn of Jericho Hill. When we first read the book, he didn't have it. He also talks about if he had taken 5 seconds and bent over to pick it up he would have saved it. Roland picks up the horn traveling through the tower, and still has it when he's in the desert again? And he also remembers picking it up! So I think that when the tower whispers to him that there still may be salvation it's saying that hey if you play your cards right, you won't reach the tower and the world will keep spinning.
I have to give Mr. King 5 stars, simply because he is amazing. How many books have fooled you at the end, in the worst way possible. How many books leave you with a taste of disgust in your mouth, because you were so off in the ending. I'd have to bet no one guessed it, I know I was way off. So to anyone that says they deserve more, take a look at what Roland was, how many people he killed, how poorly educated about the tower he was. Do we even know why he wanted to reach it so badly? No. Quit complaining, it was a great book, and your mad because the ending had you cleaning up your pants. I thought it was great, and would like to thank Mr. King for writing one of the best books i've ever had the pleasure of reading. Say Thankya.

Her tiny kingdom bankrupt, pampered Princess Marlena of Hartz-Coburg is forced to travel to the American West to solicit funds. When her sudden illness threatens her plan, the princess's ever-efficient factotum arranges for a temporary replacement, a saloon singer whose uncanny resemblance to the princess fools everyone--including tough-as-nails Texas Ranger Virgil Black, who apprehends the wrong woman on a charge of theft. Ignoring the princess's vigorous protests of innocence, Black sets off with her on horseback for the grueling ride to the El Paso jail. Virgil's strong, silent self-control is a perfect foil for Marlena's royal temper tantrums, and the heat they generate combusts into some wildly impulsive lovemaking. Funny without becoming silly, this skillful blend of fairy-tale fantasy and Western grit is a real treat. --Ellen Edwards

Excellent story!.......2000-06-15
I truly enjoyed this story. My first Nan Ryan book but not my last. Widowed Princess Marlena goes to America to raise money for her country. She takes ill and is replaced by a woman who could be her twin that works in a saloon as an actress/singer. The actress is wanted for theft and that's where Virgil Black comes in. He's assigned to bring her to jail. He spots the redhead and takes her with him even though she tells him time and again that she is a Princess. Sparks fly as they travel by horse to the final destination. This book has to have one of the best endings I have ever read.
WONDERFULLY HEARTWARMING, A TRUE KEEPER.......1999-05-11
A wonderful story of mistaken identity and true love. The carachters in this book are so real you feel as if you are part of the story. A truly exceptional romance. I couldn't put it down. Read it in one day, taking it with me to catch a few pages whenever I could. A charming love story. Princess Marlena or "Red" as Virgil Black, Captian of the Texas Rangers calls her is out of her pampered lifestyle and loving and hating every minute of it. The sparks fly and sizzle with passion. A must read for devoted happy ending readers.

Go ahead, lick your plate........2007-03-25
I bought this book at World Market and I have to say its absolutely lovely. The pictures are wonderful and while some of the ingredients are not exactly Foodtown fare (pheasant and rabbit aren't common around here), most of the recipe ingredients should be easy to find. Some of the more lucious treats are the Spinach with Eggs and Cream (if you can find organic free range eggs, it'll be even better), Potatoes baked with Wine and Mushrooms, Chestnut Cake with Rosemary, Pine Nuts and Raisins, Tuna Steaks Baked with Rosemary, and Little Tuscan Pizzas. Not everything in the book is something I'd try (ChickPea Flatbread?) but most of the recipes look like winners. It may be awhile before I make it through the book but I'm very happy with my purchase so far.
this book is the heart of our italy.......2006-07-27
we stayed at la casellaccia, the site for most of the gorgeous photos in this book, for a magical week to celebrate my husband's fortieth birthday in 2003. marcella, who is pictured creating the recipes within, and who cooked for our group many times, is a most remarkable woman whose warmth and economy of motion in the kitchen are celebrated here. the book's recipes are imbued with the simplicity and passion for the best ingredients that define southern tuscany, and the informative introductions to the sections and recipes truly put the foods of this incredible region in context. i cannot wait to take two weeks to make every recipe in this book and bring the soul and the spirit of the val d'orcia home.

From the first page, Nancy Harmon Jenkins draws you deep into the soul of Tuscany, where she lives part of the year and where tradition heavily shades daily life. Jenkins calls Tuscans "the Yankees of Italy" because they are as frugal and plainspoken as the New Englanders with whom she grew up. Their food is elementally simple, relying heavily on the region's unique, salt-free bread, pane scicco, the intense olive oil that has become famous around the world, and beans slowly cooked in a tall clay pot, or fiasco.
Jenkins enthralls the reader as she discusses Tuscan food and how her friends and neighbors gather, raise, and prepare it. Flavors of Tuscany is dense with good food. There are roasts, the bread-based soup ribollita, crostini, and less-known pleasures such as tomato-studded High Summer Risotto and Braised Sweet Pepper Stew. Jenkins's observations about a fast-changing way of living resonate with anyone who cares about quality of life. Her culinary descriptions may inspire you to build an outdoor brick oven or plan a trip to taste the wines, olive oil, and other special flavors of Tuscany. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
For the last twenty-five years, Nancy Harmon Jenkins has spent a good part of her time with her family in the hills of eastern Tuscany in an antique stone-walled farmhouse surrounded by fields, vineyards, and forests of oak and chestnut. Working through the seasons, gardening, marketing, cooking, and sharing food and its lore with Tuscan friends and neighbors, she has developed a deep attachment to the cuisine of the Tuscan countryside, to which she brings a unique perspective as one of this country's foremost food writers.
Often imitated but seldom clearly understood outside Italy, Tuscan country cooking is hearty and appealing in its simplicity and its straightforward insistence on fresh, authentic, unadulterated avors--fragrant, homey herbs like parsley, sage, and rosemary; the lush, peppery aromas of newly pressed extra virgin olive oil; the appetizing redolence of farm-raised chickens braising in a wood-fired oven; or spitted pork loin, basted with garlic and wine, roasting on the hearth. Drawing on her extensive firsthand experience, Jenkins has re-created for American cooks and the American table the rustic, robust way of cooking and eating that is the heart of Tuscan life, the avors of Tuscany.
Flavors of Tuscany features more than one hundred recipes for the dishes that provide the foundation of Tuscan cuisine. In addition to finding simple instructions for baking the salt-free bread that is more essential than pasta in Tuscan kitchens, cooks will learn the ways that frugal Tuscans use leftover bread in soups like ribollita and in salads like panzanella.
There are also recipes for bruschetta and crostini, the delightful bread crusts piled with toppings that are served as antipasti, light meals, and snacks. A garden-fresh array of vegetable recipes ranges from humble potatoes braised with tomatoes or sautÚed with garlic and rosemary to creamy beans stewed with olive oil in a traditional Tuscan fiasco; from elegant spring asparagus with butter-fried eels to a series of sformati, little unmolded puddings of seasonal vegetables that are a favorite Tuscan first course. Handmade eel pastas, gnocchi, polenta, and rice are also savory first courses, often served with robust meat and wild mushroom rag¨s or delicate seafood sauces.
More than a cookbook or a recipe collection, Flavors of Tuscany is a celebration of a way of life and an attitude toward food that is as seductive as it is simple. Along with unforgettable sketches of people and places that have appealed to her over the years, Jenkins has included an indispensable section, "When You Go to Tuscany," that includes favorite restaurants and specialty shops.
To all this, Jenkins brings her special combination of skills: a journalist's air for anecdote, a historian's passion for the story of the past, and a gifted cook's appreciation of fine traditional food and the people who create it, as well as a deep and abiding love of Tuscany. The result is magic.
Customer Reviews:
Molto Bene!.......2006-07-21
I fell in love with Tuscan food years ago. This book has the recipes I love--I have never found a bad recipe in here, and many of the pages are so dog-eared and dripped-on that you can tell they're the ones used again and again. The wonderful comments, the simplicity of the recipes, the incredible food that results are an invitation to linger outside on a balmy summer night and, like the Tuscans, make dinner an EVENT that everyone enjoys for hours. A little wine, good friends, the setting sun, and good Italian food--Incredible!
Literature among Cookbooks.......2000-05-22
There are a couple of genre whose excesses are apparent. One is cookbooks, the other is books about Tuscany. Indeed the very word Tuscany seems to have inspired dishware, linens; the list goes on. Given this plethora, it is a genuine delight to read this (or any) book by Nancy Harmon Jenkins. She not only serves up the greatest recipes, which is expected of any cookbook worth its salt, but her writing is charming and most intelligent. This is one book which not only gives the Flavors of Tuscany, but its people, its customs...its reality! Ms. Jenkins surpasses the usual and customary in food writing, she is a social historian who uses food to instill a genuine reality. Great food, even a better read!
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Delightful Take on Tuscan Cuisine. Buy It!!!.......2006-01-01
`true tuscan' by restauranteur / chef Cesare Casella is another attempt at capturing the cuisine of Tuscany with the same depth and interest shown in the many excellent treatments of Lazio (Rome), Liguria (Genoa and the Riviera), Emilia-Romagna (Bologna and Parma), and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Trieste, San Daniele). Some of these regions such as Lazio have been the beneficiaries of several excellent treatments. For some reason, all the treatments of Tuscan cuisine in general have been too heavily oriented toward the travelogue or too self-serving to the business interests of the author. One notable exception is `The Tuscan Year' by Elizabeth Romer' which, however, is much more a personal memoir than a good survey of the region as a whole.
To be sure, good regional cookbooks come in at least three different flavors. Romer's work and Vincent Schiavelli's `Many Beautiful Things' (on Sicily) is the culinary memoir, Mario Batali's `Simple Italian Food' and Suzanne Dunaway's `Rome, At Home' are examples of personal interpretations of home cooking from a region, and Lynne Rosetto Kaspar's `The Splendid Table' and Fred Plotkin's `La Terra Fortunata' aim at giving us a fairly representative survey of a regions most distinctive dishes.
Cesare Casella's `true tuscan' falls somewhere between the personal treatment and the more scholarly study. But, the fact that it does not fit into an easy pigeonhole is definitely not a reason to consider it a poor book. It is, in fact, a very, very good book of Tuscan dishes. The means by which the author certifies this as a representation of Tuscan cuisine is by the simple fact that it is his cuisine, he is a professional chef, and he is Tuscan, at least originally. One thing this means is that there are more than a few dishes herein that originated in Liguria, Lazio, and points south. This is not really surprising since this book tends to confirm Fred Plotkin's statement in `La Terra Fortunata' that Tuscany is really in the middle of the pack among Italian regional cuisines, after Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Campania, Liguria, and even Puglia. And, my respect for this book is based heavily on the fact that it is one of the very few Italian cookbooks, which exemplifies the poverty of the historical Italian cuisine. In fact, Tuscany boasts two major influences to interesting cuisine in that during the Renaissance, it had one of the most powerful noble houses in Italy, that being the Medici's of Florence. And, a noble court is one of the four underpinnings of great cuisine stipulated by Paula Wolfert.
This is one of the very few books which shows the importance of inexpensive ingredients such as beans, greens, stale bread, cheap fish, and organ meats in a lot of different dishes. One or more of these ingredients appear in virtually every recipe. At the same time, the book celebrates another hallmark of Italian cuisine, the celebratory dish, especially the now very famous timbale seen in Stanley Tucci's film, `Big Night'. This is specifically the `Pasticchio alla Fiorentina' with a pastry shell rather than a pasta or bread based shell. Like all the other `big' timbale recipes, this includes everything but the kitchen sink, with both a bechamel sauce and a meat ragu similar to ragu Bolognaise.
I really like the fact that Casella has organized his recipes by the five major traditional courses of an Italian meal. These are:
Antipasti, featuring several dishes which are a lot more complicated than the simple crostini. Tarts made with vegetables and organ meats plus dishes based on octopus, cuddlefish, and squid are heavily featured. There is even a recipe for an octopus salami. One of the most interesting I found is an oven fried calamari. It also includes a very Sicilian salad of shrimp, blood oranges, and fennel.
Primi Piatti (Soups, Pastas, and Risotto) with lots of soups based on cheap vegetables such as potatoes, onions, and leeks. True to the doctrine laid down by Mario Batali, the chicken stock is not your typical French production requiring many hours. It needs nothing more than some chicken legs, celery, carrots, onions, salt, and an hour to cook. I am also surprised to find three different gnocchi recipes. I am becoming more and more convinced that gnocchi is even more universal in the various Italian regions than either fresh or dried pasta, as everyone seems to have a recipe for it. Swiss Chard, the true Tuscan leafy green (not spinach) is the featured ingredient in one of the gnocchis. The most interesting recipe in this chapter is a technique for cooking pasta `al cartoccio' (in parchment).
Secondi (Seafood, Poultry, and Meats) which includes the original recipe for monkfish `osso buco' and a cowboy style `Tuscan Spareribs' (`Maremmana') which the author delights in clarifying by noting that there are, in fact, cowboys in Tuscany, in the district known as Maremma.
Contorni (Vegetables, Beans, and Other Side Dishes) , has the most typical Tuscan dishes containing either green leafy vegetables or beans, plus beets, potatoes, peas, and mushrooms.
Dolci (Desserts) is a rather small chapter, quite in keeping with the conventional wisdom that the Italians are not big sweet dessert eaters. And, one of the features in this chapter is the molten chocolate cake made famous by the very French Jean-Georges Vongerichten. But, even this short chapter has some treasures such as bean fritters `Fagioli Fritti', with a little plug for Casella's `Republic of Beans' business for importing dried Italian beans.
The book ends with a decent bibliography and list of sources, but you probably know everything there already if you have three or more good Italian cookbooks.
For a list price of less than $25, this book is a great find, and the very best book of recipes I have yet found based on the cuisine of Tuscany, even if the author colors outside the lines a bit. Historical Sidebars are also of very high quality for this inexpensive book!
Very highly recommended.

One of the best cookbook for its simplicity and result.......2001-12-11
The recipes are simple and easy enough for a beginner like me, yet the result is sophisticated and delicious! (My favorites are Roast Lamb with Rosemary and Garlic, and Green Risotto) Most of the recipes do not require exotic ingredients, which is also a big plus.
Perfect for an impatient cook who can't spend hours in kitchen but loves to eat trattoria style food.
An exhilarating and beautifully well done book!.......2000-08-26
The author has a thorough knowledge of Tuscany; its culture, food, and people. As if the photography and the gorgeous artwork weren't enough, the recipes are dazzling and perfectly authentic to the region. The information presented in the book is appropriately informative and with all the above elements combined, one is left feeling as though one has actually visited Tuscany! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Italian cooking and culture. The price is an absolute steal! :)

Flavors of Italy: Tuscany.......2000-04-15
This book is a wonderful introduction to the food of Tuscany, the region of Italy most noted for wonderful food. It includes the history of food and cooking in this area, gorgeous photographs, short essays on regional specialties and traditons, and easy to folow recipes. Recipes include a suggested wine and a chatty note about the recipe's history, ingredient substitutions, or preparation alternatives. The authors are Tuscan but write for the American cook, listing ingredients found in American markets. These are the recipes cooked and served in Tuscan homes for centuries. If you are fortunate enough to be able to go to Tuscany, this is the food you will find served in the "newest" restaurants.

Simon St. Laurent's foray into XML is best described by an adjective not often used with computer books: charming. From its portable size to its playful code examples, XML: A Primer is an interesting and well-crafted read. Stylistic considerations aside, it is also a useful introduction for anyone who does considerable work in HTML or SGML.
St. Laurent explains the nuanced differences between XML and HTML, stating, "Using XML requires a different focus, demanding that designers examine the way that their documents are built rather than the way they are formatted." He later comments, "XML doesn't go nearly as far as SGML in requiring conformance to standards, but it may still come as a shock to HTML developers. XML standards refer to processors (parsers), not to browsers, because much XML development will be intended for machine-readable data applications rather than graphically exciting web pages."
If you are curious about the hype surrounding XML, ready for an XML book you can read cover to cover, and comfortable with lengthy code examples, XML: A Primer will offer you the knowledge you need to understand this emerging technology.
Book Description
St.Laurent's popular primer offers Web developers a quick start to understanding and implementing XML. This third edition of XML: A Primer, 3rd Edition, includes new developments in XML technology regarding XLink, XPointer, XPath and XSLT. This guide for Web developers explains the differences and similarities between SGML, HTML, and XML, and provides you with a solid understanding of how to create custom tags and Document Type Definitions (DTDs). You'll also find discussion on the impact of XML Schemas and RELAX.
Customer Reviews:
Not for curious folk!.......2003-06-15
I'm a web developer who knows both HTML and CSS. I bought this book wondering what the world of XML could be about. I was told that it was the "future" of the internet or something. I browsed some online tutorials, and found that this was not just some simple language you could learn in a couple weeks. As I opened the book, I started reading the introduction. The beginning of the book is very interesting because St. Laurent gets into much detail about where XML came from and the roots of practically every language it derived from (like C). But as I read on into the book, he was very wordy. this book needed a CD-ROM with it. The language itself is very simple. But there are many rules that you must follow. To a typical, experienced developer his language is probably most understandable. As I was reading about DTDs n such (i had to read it over a bzillion times) I got even more confused. Finally, I just decided to put it down. His explanations were NOT in layman's terms so the curious user could understand. True, he did give lengthy explanations, but it could be because I read it all during school in small snippets. I never tried out his onlione stuff he has pasted all over the book. What I'm saying is I don't think this book is for curious new users. Maybe users thatr understand all the basic stuff, then just wanna use it as a reference or be told why exactly something does something. A user said earlier that he doesn't leave the reader guessing random code. Well, if you flip thru the back, you can see that the lengthy code pages offer tiny explanations. The IS a ton of code pages. Just thought I'd point that out. I would not recommend this book to anyone. The cheapest is not always the best.
Great Introduction.......2001-07-12
I first read this book a few years ago, and still read excerpts from it periodically as friends get involved. In one of the early chapters, St Laurent basically asserts that WYSIWYG was actually a technological setback. I knew at that point I was going to enjoy the book.
If you're into computer science, and want to understand the technology - this is a great place to start.
Still the Best Place to Start.......2001-02-11
It's February 2001, and this book still does a better job of explaining what XML is all about than ones with a 2001 copyright date. St. Laurent's understanding of a Primer is right on target. Instead of having tons of code for the reader to cluelessly hammer out, he explains how XML works, and so when the reader does code the examples, he understands far better what's going on. The explanation of the Document Object Model is unmatched in any of the other books published on XML. Likewise, the crucial topic of Document Type Definitions (DTD) is handled far better and in intelligent detail than anything published since.
Unfortunately, XML is deceptively complex. While it doesn't take a rocket scientist to crank up an XML file, toss in some CSS and claim XML is yet another programming language one has conquered, understanding how the DTD works requires more than a couple of examples and a reassuring pat on the shoulder that the reader can do it in an afternoon. What St. Laurent does, and does well, is to prepare the serious developer/programmer for understanding XML. To be sure, the book represents a foundation for using XML and is not an entire treatise on all that XML can do. However, unlike some of the books I've seen on XML that contain code that will not validate (including on their CD ROMs), this book gets it right. If you want to get XML right, this book is the place to start.
Update: This book is really bad. Get Beginning XML instead........2001-02-03
Data organization is XML's strength, making it an excellent mechanism for transfering information from one application to another -- whether it is a database, a legacy system, or a web site. Strangely, the author never really gets the point across.
Even near the end of the book, the author only briefly mentions the XML parsing tool called SAX (the popular XML/Java API). Unfortunately, he fails to provide details on it use. SAX offers an easy way for computers to read an XML file and extract the data. Perl and Active Server Page APIs are also available for those who do not program in Java. But, data organization is only one of the strengths of XML. Many others exist. (The author misses these, too.)
This book is the worst technical book I've ever purchased. If it were feasible, I'd give it negative stars. If you are interested in learning AND using XML's capabilities, check out David Hunter's "Beginning XML". Compare the table of contents. You'll see the difference.
A very disappointing book for software developers.......2000-12-23
Some people appear to really like this book. It has received many glowing reviews, but I can only shake my head in disagreement. This book is a dud -- too much text, and not enough practical advise or code examples.
The author could not adequately describe how to use basic XML components such as Document Type Definitions (DTDs), and failed to show how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) can be used to display XML on the web.
If you are a web programmer or need to do something useful with
XML, look elsewhere. This is not the book for you. In fact, I'm selling this book. Wanna buy it? I'll use the proceeds to purchase "Beginning XML" by Kurt Cagle. That book looks promising.

If the idea of generating HTML for either Netscape's or Microsoft's 4.0 Web browser fills you with apprehension--and perhaps it should--Dynamic HTML: A Primer can help. Rather than providing step-by-step information on a standard that doesn't exist yet, Simon St. Laurent explains the concepts behind Dynamic HTML or Document Object Model (a combination of scripting, style sheets, and HTML) and what you should know before you attempt to create pages and sites that use it. The title is potentially misleading in that Dynamic HTML is only one of many topics that the book covers. St. Laurent also details Java applets, ActiveX, and both companies' implementations of JavaScript and VBScript. Style sheets, layers, and absolute positioning are also described, but anyone who is serious about these subjects should consider more in-depth texts devoted to them. If you are already determined to leverage these features, you probably don't need to read Dynamic HTML: A Primer. However, you'll find plenty of valuable advice on how to avoid the myriad of problems involved in developing Web content for two browsers.
Book Description
Dynamic HTML promises to be an incredibly powerful new scripting language for developers. An emerging standard under consideration by the W3 consortium, it will provide Web designers with the ability to create "deep" Web pages, capable of responding instantaneously to a user's actions. The advent of the document object model means the beginning of a new kind of document -- one that is infinitely programmable and capable of providing a complete user interface.
Dynamic HTML: A Primer walks developers through one of the hottest areas in the browser wars, explaining the differences between the browser implementations and how to avoid getting caught in the middle. Readers will learn how to integrate ActiveX controls, Java applets, and scripts into their code to create truly robust and interactive Web pages.
Explores powerful ways to create animated pages Explains new techniques for binding Web data to corporate client-server databases Provides simple, clear examples to get you started with complex tools Uses both JavaScript and VBScript examples Covers the latest multimedia objects for Internet Explorer Explains Java applets, ActiveX objects, and their relationship to Dynamic HTML documents Describes Cascading Style Sheets and positioning techniques Covers layers, textRanges, and collections Explains the developing event models of both Netscape and Microsoft's browsers
Customer Reviews:
Not very useful as a reference.......2000-05-29
I think this book was valuable when I was just learning about DHTML. Reading it is like learning about what is possible, but you can't learn everything about DHTML. The author really just provides examples of what you can do, but he won't show you everything. Keep in mind that this book was published back when the then current version if Internet Explorer was (I thought) the best implementation of DHTML, albeit non-standard. And that's the rub; the techniques the author demonstrates are browser-specific and won't work universally, not even today. Finally, the book seems disorganized, and it is difficult to find what few useful examples there are.
Don't Waste Your Money.......1999-06-04
As a web developer I bought this book hoping to learn new techniques. What I got was frustration. Although this book contains numerous coding examples (mainly for use with Internet Explorer), only about 5% of them work (with Internet Explorer). Don't waste your money.
This book stinks.......1999-02-15
I got this book because I wanted a good introductory course to DHTML. I knew little about style sheets and my scripting skills were not too great; and this book basically assumes that you know it all. It doesn't give any good examples and it's poorly laid out with useless sample code. This book should have been in color with a CD-ROM included, and it should have gone more into depth with style sheets and scripting. In a nutshell, don't buy this book. It stinks.
Just Messy.......1999-01-30
I thought I could, at least, learn something from the book. After reading through the book, I found it messy. And my choice then is to buy another...
Out of date.......1998-02-26
When I bought this book I was looking for something I could read away from the computer and still pick up the basics of the new dynamic HTML possibilities. I got what I was looking for. The book is easy to read and understand and I was satisfied. . .until I got around to actually sitting down and hacking out the code. The book is, frankly, out of date. Written before the final release of IE4.0, it misrepresents some of the methods and code available for Microsoft's latest browser. I can only assume that the support for some of the code was changed after publication of this book. In fact, a lot of what I learned turned out to be fairly useless. As if to verify this, I soon found that there were many updates to chapters on the publisher's website. All in all, it's a book with great potential. I would expect a new edition out soon - and when it comes it could prove to be a truly excellent introduction to DHTML.
Book Description
Best selling author returns to the chilling world of gutsy medical examiner Kay Scarpetta in this suspense fiction classic. A reclusive author, Beryl Madison finds no safe haven from months of menacing phone calls -- or the tormented feeling that her every move is being watched. When the writer is found slain in her own home, Kay Scarpetta pieces together the intricate forensic evidence -- while unwittingly edging closer to a killer waiting in the shadows.
