An OK read.......2007-01-09

Since Im a fashion freak, I was really excited to read this novel about a girl who comes from a family that dines and wines with designers such as Versace and Ralph Lauren.

Unfortunately, the book falls flat. The characters, the plot, even the fashion . . . they all fall flat. At times I found myself so bored that I had to put it down.

Also, even though Lily got this so called makeover from one of her best friends, she was still very much a fashion victim. It's like where did these authors get their fashion advice? They should have consulted with magazines such as Vogue or Bazaar because a fashion diva will not be caught dead wearing a pink mini skirt with a lime green top. That screams trashy not flashy!

My point is that everything about this novel is just not believable and some parts are absolutely boring.

Other than that, read at your own risk.

Good girl lit gone right!.......2006-12-14

Lily Traywick is the daughter of the owners of huge and famous department store in San Francisco. She is poised to inherit it in the future. However, Lily does not want to continue life working with clothes. She spends time with her two best friends and tries to figure out why she's not able to get a boyfriend. After a makeover she meets Sam, another employee at the store. Soon they begin to date, and Lily starts to really enjoy life. Then Sam's friend Delia comes to town, wrecking havoc into their relationship. Lily jots all these events in her blog, writing about everything that's happened with Sam, her friends, her parents, anyone she's come into contact with. When her blog's secrets become public to those who are in it, it'll take a miracle for her to recover.

I thought this was a fun and cool read. I really like this new Chick-lit genre and this book definitely fits in it. My favorite scene in the book would have to be the hockey game where she has to wear that shark head. I just about died laughing. I know how Lily feels about being one of the guys. It happened to me too, they are so used to hanging out with you that they don't realize you're actually a girl. I'm glad Lily kept rejecting Sam when he tried to come back to her after leaving Delia. He needed to suffer after what he had put her through. To be honest, if I had been in Lily's shoes at that point, I would have been severely depressed. Everyone had turned on her even though she had just been telling the truth about them. To be fair though, I don't know why Lily just hadn't used code names when writing in her blog. If you plan on spilling out details of your life, you can't use real names because you never know who will be reading about it. I did enjoy them though. (Although do you realize that fictional characters always get more hits than real people do?) I also appreciated how Lily is a Christian that is strong about her beliefs (she wouldn't date Sam at first because she wasn't sure) and wants her friends to become believers, yet she is not the pushy overbearing stereotypical Christian like other characters in the book.

Excellent book, one I would recommend anyone (Christian or non-Christian) to read. This is a fun read that everyone can enjoy because everyone know how it feels to be in Lily's shoes.

In the tradition of chick lit,Lily Traywick obsesses over almost every aspect of her life,from her social life (or lack of it) to her unsatisfying job at Traywicks,the family department store and the fact that at her advanced age of 20something, she still lives with her parents.In an effort to do something positive about her situation,she follows the advice of a friend and changes her hair and the way she dresses.She attracts the attention of Sam,a hot co-worker. Just when it appears that Lily can't be any more self-absorbed or self-centered, and the reader is ready to write off Lily, the pace of the story picks up, particularly when one of Sam's old female friends makes an appearance and Lily discovers her best friend, who also works at Traywick's is stealing from the company. Lily's life implodes: Sam breaks off with her and her previously anonymous blog becomes public, causing all of Lily's nearest and dearest's to become angry with her. What makes this story unusual is that Lily identifies herself as a Christian and makes frequent references to church groups and activities. But when she realizes how she has hurt her friends and family, she needs to put her Christian faith into practice and seek forgiveness from those whom she has inadvertently betrayed. A fun read that will have readers rooting for Lily.

after EMILY EVER AFTER? how can this be better?.......2006-07-05

I loved EMILY EVER AFTER the debut chick-lit novel of these two steady and easy to take Christian novelists! They rate at the top of my list! I read all kinds of books - not even fiction mostly? but I was enthralled by Anne Dayton's and May Vanderbilt's newest and easy to listen and read NOT preachy love story. One grows up with the characters and learns about LIFE but not JESUS in totally inappropriate ways as some Christian novelists tend to do with their evangelical works. I applaud Anne and May once again in their writing about to be a true "Christian?" One lives the life and not yells it from the roof-tops! Top of my list of to read summer books. Or any season books actually!

I've been eagerly awaiting Dayton and Vanderbilts' latest book ,Consider Lily. Witty and fun with real life Christian dilemmas being faced by Lily. I read the entire book in one fun filled weekend. It's even better than the first book Emily Ever After. I hope there is a sequel coming soon. These authors are terrific!,

Thirty years after reading Erico Verissimo for the first time, his writing still awakens a consciousness in me that only good, universal writing can do.

E. Verissimo talks in "Consider the lilies of the field" about a man that wants to get rid of the poverty of his infancy by leaving everything and everyone behind as he scales the ladder of power and fame as an important doctor. However, the past hits him back when the woman he loved in the past dies, leaving him with their child and many doubts about her, and what they once felt for one another. And this is just the beginning of his misadventures in the South of Brazil before WWII. Consider this a book for life - it talks straight to your heart from page one till the end. You really must be made of stone to dislike it!

it's no myth that this book is great.......2003-12-20

This 2-in-1 is volumes three and four in Asprin's hit Myth series. Both are great stories and great books. Myth Directions deals with the game the gang plays in order to win the Trophy (...Tanda...). And Hit or Myth is truly hilarious as Skeeve has to pretend to be the king and avoid marriage. These are great books.

More of the same with the Myth crew.......2002-12-04

I've just picked this series up again after having read it about 15 years ago. I do have to admit that it was more enjoyable when I was in high school, and being as that I can recommend it more to teens than to more sophisticated readers. This second collection of two Myth books is a decent enough follow up to the first installment and continues the dimension hopping antics of Skeeve and Aahz. The supposedly zany adventures aren't quite madcap enough, though and all in all they actually seem rather tame by modern fantasy standards.

The oddball group of characters is interesting enough, although by these books it seems as if everyone seems to already know one another from somewhere else (pretty small multiple dimension, huh?). Asprin still over explains character motivation and wraps up the loose ends he creates waaaaay too quickly continuing the forced nature of the climaxes as were in the first two books.

Overall this is good harmless light reading, but unless you really liked the characters from the first two books I wouldn't really recommend it. I breezed through this volume rather briskly, but ultimately wasn't really looking forward to reading the next installation that I had already purchased.

Mrs. Matis:
It sickens me that you are glad that your son is dead instead of living and giving in to homosexuality. Your son pinned a "do not resuscitate" note to his shirt and blew his precious brain out all over the steps of a stake center, and you find peace in it; I am horrified. I cannot believe that you are promulgating the idea that it is better to kill yourself than to be gay...this is the kind of thinking that ended your sons life in the first place.

To prospective readers: this book is not for those who are gay and Mormon; it will just make you want to die.

A True Testimony of the Love of Jesus Christ.......2006-03-17

"Truth" is a word often used flipantly; it is often used to describe opinions, elevating assertions to a level where they do not belong. Contrary to what many would think given the stated subject matter of the book, "In Quiet Desperation" goes beyond the polemic that often surrounds the "issue" of homosexuality, and presents but one simple statement, one simple and wonderous Truth: The arms of God's love extend to every man, woman, and child, regardless of what one's own personal temptations may be. "In Quiet Desperation" is a book primarily concerned with proclaiming the Good News of Christ's Atoning Sacrifice! In making an important distinction between "Temptation" and "Sin", "In Quiet Desperation" offers hope to men and women, like myself, who are attracted to individuals of the same sex; hope that we--I--too may be cleansed in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ; hope that I too may be made innocent through His love. To put it simply, "In Quiet Desperation" is one family's and one man's True Testimony that Christ lives, and that through Him and by Him ALL may live again in the presence of God, if only we are willing to come unto Him. How sad and sickening to read .......2006-01-20

I can't believe people, even those who are LDS accept that "Trans-Gender Attraction" is even a real malady.

This just demonstrates the brainwashing that LDS Inc. perpetrates on a daily basis.

To read about these poor men tormenting themselves in the hopes they could change who they are for a bunch of deluded old men in Salt Lake City is heartbreaking.

I know personally men who attempted suicide several times because of their homosexuality and others because they could not stop masturbating, which is also a sin in the eyes of the LDS cult.

Homosexuality is not a disease, medical science and most civilized societies realized this long ago.

"Recovery" from homosexuality is not possible, no more so than I can will my eyes to change color or grow another foot because I wish it so.

The book is not poorly written, but the subject matter is appalling.

Gives Hope to Those Struggling with the Challenge of SGA .......2005-10-19

This is a wonderful book that gave me and so many others struggling with same-gender attraction hope. I know of many who have become frustrated because the change they sought did not come as quickly as they wanted, did not come as easily as they would like, or did not come in the manner they expected. For those that feel this way, this book indeed brings renewed hope.

I have heard several people say that this book is against change. On the contrary, this book is supportive of spiritual change and growth and placing the time-table for overcoming this challenge in the Lord's hands. For some, this challenge may be overcome in this life. But the Lord may ask others of us to endure this "thorn in the flesh" throughout our mortal estate.

Regardless, the message of this book teaches us that we can be worthy in the sight of the Lord, that we have eternal worth, and that there is a place for us in His Kingdom. No more or less is expected of us than any of the rest of God's children.

I have the deepest of gratitude for Ty Mansfield and Fred and Marilyn Matis for writing this book.

Well-intended, but the overall message is a bit hopeless.......2005-07-22

While the writers try to be hopeful and helpful, their overall message is depressing. Many people have overcome same-sex attraction and moved on with their lives. The two stories in this book give the impression that the only outcomes are to commit suicide or just live with it your whole life. There are other options! You aren't born that way, and you don't have to just live with it! See [...]for a rather lengthy review.

I prefer Quintana's "Taste of Mexico".......2005-04-25

For those who aren't already familiar with authentic Mexican cuisine, you should know that it has been long regarded as one of the world's five great cuisines...along with Chinese, French, Italian & Spanish (of course more recently Turkish has cracked the top five...and depending on who you ask either Italian or Spanish leaves the list). It has earned its billing as a great cuisine through its 6,000 year history of creativity & complex, sophisticated development of flavor. As such, don't expect these recipes to be simplistic, effortless solutions to a quick weeknight dinner....these are for serious foodies who have grown tired of repeating their French & Italian recipes...and who are looking for a cuisine that is equally gourmet, but a lot healthier, with a greater reliance on colorful produce rather than cream, butter & cheese.

For those who aren't already familiar with Patricia Quintana, you should know that she was Mexico City's premier cookbook author for many years, and in the last decade she has become the most celebrated Chef & Restarateur. This is one of the must have books for a serious Mexican foodie. However, I must agree with the editor...if you don't know how to make a basic seared Mexican sauce, or dry roast garlic then you will be a little lost. In that case, I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing Bayless' Mexican Kitchen first, then buying this book once you have exhuasted his recipes.

Note, if you get the Bayless book then you should purchase Qunitana's Taste of Mexico to reduce the # of overlapping & recipes & because you will get more pictures.

Nice, if you have the time........2000-12-06

This is an elegant book with lots of lovely photos that captures the essence of authentic Mexican cusine. It's the total oposite of the stereotype of Chevy's burritos an whatnot that so many people associate with Mexican food. This book shows that Mexican food can be as involved as French food with many steps and ingredients. This isn't something I often have time for but when I do, it's worth it.

Shrader's book, "U.S. Military Logistics, 1607-1991: A Research Guide", is in no way a general interest book - but one would likely guess that from the title and subtitle. So what audience is Shrader hoping to hit? Cleary this book is geared almost exclusively to the academic-type military historian, not the casual reader - even one interested in understanding military logistics. In the field of military history the Big L (logistics) is crucial to understanding the past and preparing for the future, but most noted historians shirk from any lengthy discussion of the Big L. Dry facts and factoids is a kind way to synopsize most literature on military logistics. "U.S. Military Logistics, 1607-1991: A Research Guide" is even dry beyond that expected for literature in this area. Why? Mainly because it is in fact a large bibliography of references to the field of military logistics, not a treatise or analysis of the subject. Shrader is a noted historian of military logistics and he has compiled an awesome collection of references for the serious student to ponder. It would be daunting indeed to read all of the reference material Shrader cites. Beyond this amazing chronicling of research and reference materials Shrader also provide some introductory commentary to sections within the book to explain why he has focused in this way or that, and to clarify what he considers important and relevant points on the Big L.

All in all "U.S. Military Logistics, 1607-1991: A Research Guide" is a tour-de-force of reference works on the topic and this should be a good starting point for the serious to delve into the important but under appreciated area of logistics.

An Excellent Aid for Research.......1999-05-18

This work is an incredible help in tracking down resources concerning the Russo-German War (1941-45). Not only do Muller and Ueberschar list thousands of works in English, German, and Russian, but they walk the reader through the trends of the literature in the past five decades. It is definitely not an accessible book for the layperson, but if you plan to do scholarly work in the field of WWII studies, this work is a must.

Useful advice for any business leader........1998-08-15

This should be considered a classic in business literature. I found it very useful designing workshops to help corporate leaders breathe life into stodgy mission statements. The use of mission to motivate employees is rarely achieved, and this book helps you understand why.
