Book Description
Ani Silver is a young American woman whose half-Jewish, half-Armenian heritage seems a mere footnote to her own identity. But when the dark shadows of history insinuate themselves into her otherwise peaceful life, she is propelled into a profound and passionate series of journeys-a quest for a long-dead father, a search for the clues of a nearly forgotten genocide, and a love threatened by a quietly gathering storm of murder and retribution. After college, Ani leaves for a year in Paris, taking along her boyfriend's pledge of fidelity and the promise of their future together. When she receives a letter from him ending their relationship, she falls into a series of romantic misadventures. It is not long before Ani reconnects with a childhood friend, an elusive and intriguing character whose preoccupation with the Armenian heritage they share provides Ani with a new connection to her identity-even as she begins to suspect that he has a secret, and dangerous, identity himself. Both funny and heartbreaking, clear through to its bold and exquisite conclusion, Dreams of Bread and Fire is an irresistible novel of passion, ideals, and the temptations—and dangers—of trying to outrun our origins.

I was disapointed.......2003-08-25
I loved Zabelle...one of the few books that I cried like a baby after reading, but this latest one left me with a feeling that it was not complete. If you liked Zabelle and have an interest in the Armenian genocide then please do yourself a big favor and read "Rise the Euphrates" as beautiful and painful book as Zabelle.
Wonderful read.......2003-08-07
After Zabelle, I was dying to read Dreams of Bread and Fire and while at first I was a little unsure about the Paris episodes and the love affair, I was very excited by the second half of the book.
The main character, Ani, is an interesting character who seems to come alive halfway into the book. The New York episodes are particularly riveting.
The only shocking aspect (and I don't mean scary) is the ending, I hope there is a sequel because at the end it feels like the real Ani is coming of age.
The book is a good read with well-crafted prose. Kricorian finds some interesting angles, though the Paris episodes make me thankful my college years are far behind me becauase they were a little pretentious.
slender volume with lingering themes.......2003-06-30
After coming across an interview with the author in the webzine, ..., I was sufficiently intrigued to pick up her book, Dreams of Bread and Fire. I could not put it down until I had completed it. At certain points, I grinned or even felt tears come to my eyes in recognition of some of the themes that Ms Kricorian deftly weaves into a compelling narrative--not necessarily the themes that relate specifically to Armenian history, but the universal ones of self-realization and identity, how they relate to relationships and the search for love, the need to belong and the choices inherent in one's background and "Old World" heritage.
Ms. Kricorian gives enough details to form carefully observed and vivid depictions of characters without a single wrong note; this allows for a very credible and engaging portrayal of the main character's relationships that are formed and transformed over the course of the book. Some of my favorite moments occur between the main character, Ani, and her comic-tragic grandmother (an short glossary is provided at the back of the book for added enjoyment of her colorful exclamations) and also between Ani and Sydney, the little American girl she is a nanny to in Paris. And especially when it comes to Ani's experiences with men, Ms. Kricorian accomplishes the difficult task of portraying encounters between people of differing class sensibilities and differing views of nationality and gender relations without being didactic or (a worse offense) resorting to cartoonish stereotypes. You can understand the choices that Ani makes even if you don't agree with them.
One does not need to be Armenian or even half Armenian (as the main character is) to appreciate this book--but anyone who has ever been confronted with issues of class, an "Old World" background (and implied obligations) and/or compensation for a non traditional upbringing--all the while navigating what it means to be "in love"--will find a lot to relate to in this slender but thought provoking book.

Customer Reviews:
Russell does it again!.......2006-03-21
Anyone that has enjoyed Russell's previous work adapting Norse mythology and opera might appreciate this, as well. Honestly, PCR's view of the character is one of the most accurate yet, and his ability to adapt the writings of others is astounding in it's depth. Still, I must admit the main reason I enjoy his art so much isn't the layout, so much as the gorgeous line work. Dark Horse really gave Conan fans a treat by recruiting PCR for this collected miniseries--the pairing of artist and subject truly was inspired--and the only complaint I can offer is that the ride is over far too swiftly.

Good, exciting original Conan Story by the Master.......1998-05-19
This edition of "Jewels of Gwahlur," well illustrated by Dean Morrissey, is part of a wonderful series published by Donald M. Grant of deluxe, hardcover editions of Robert E. Howard's original Conan stories. The present volume includes the title story, which first appeared in "Weird Tales" in 1935, and the story fragment titled "Snout in the Dark" which first saw print in 1969 in a rewritten version in the paperback "Conan of Cimmeria" (part of that Lancer series that first introduced so many, me included, to the works of REH). In "Jewels of Gwahlur," a good, exciting story, Conan is a mercenary soldier in Keshan searching for the "Teeth of Gwahlur," the treasure of the lost city of Alkmeenon. Conan fights and overcomes several perils, both natural and supernatural, and in the end finds that some things are more valuable that a casket of jewels. Pretty smart guy, that Conan. I certainly hope that Donald M. Grant has some more Conan books in the works, 11 have been printed so far which means that about 2 or 3 would complete the set. Hopefully someone will also reprint the original stories in paperback (without the "pastiches," thank you) so that a whole new generation of young readers will have a chance to read this great stuff. It is incredible to think that REH's Conan stories have been out of print in paperback for almost twenty years while all kind of modern hack produces one poorly written ripoff novel after another.
Book Description
It is 1939; the Nazis have occupied Poland. A young doctor disturbed by the fate of Poland joins the staff of an insane asylum only to find a world of pain and absurdity to match that outside. Translated by William Brand. A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book
Customer Reviews:
A trip into the surreal.......2006-10-13
The symbolism and philosophical insight in this book is astounding. The setting is Poland, following the Nazi invasion, but it seems that by starting a new job in an insane asylum, the protagonist escapes the outside world and his "lost motherland" only to join an alien landscape where deranged and yet fascinating people live. You can almost see that even in his first book Lem was already thinking science fiction by reading some of the case histories of the patients. The story almost carries you to another world and until the last chapter you seem to forget the reality of the precarious situation that mental patients faced during Nazi occupation. While I truly enjoyed the story and the dialogues between Stefan and Sekulowski, this book lacks a coherent plot, and suffers from focus in inconsequential details, such as the appearance of a graveyard in the winter and the rays of sunlight shining through the window of a room.
I don't know what the other reviewers read, but..........2001-06-26
I loved this book. Lem's partially auto-biographical Transfiguration is set in a WWII era insane asylum in Poland. He tells a compelling story of a time and place when you had to look hard to tell the difference between the doctors and the patients.
one of lem's best.......1999-09-01
Though some of it is a little fluffy, over all i found this book to be intresting and spellbinding.
Not his best.......1999-02-03
This is one of his earliest, and it kinda let me down. A guy working in an insane asylum. Kinda haunting at times, not terribly interesting though. It sounds as if Sekulowski is supposed to be saying some really neat stuff, but it all sounds like a bunch of fluff to me. Not the greatest, but it's Lem.
Book Description
Winner of Mormon History Association Best Biography Biography. As one of the LDS Church's most widely recognized scholars, Hugh Nibley is both an icon and an enigma. Through complete access to Nibley's correspondence, journals, notes and papers, Petersen has painted a portrait that reveals the man behind the legend. Starting with a foreword written by Zina Nibley Peterson (the author's wife and Nibley's daughter) and finishing with appendixes that include some of the best of Nibley's personal correspondence, the biography reveals aspects of the tapestry of the life of one who has truly consecrated his life to the service of the Lord.

A Gl;impse into the Life of Hugh Nibley.......2007-01-05
John Matlock's review echoes my own feelings. Alex Nibley gives a touching
insight to aspects of Dr. Nibley's character that are, to say the least,
interesting. The text is excellent; the illustrations plenteous; all
adding to the readability and supplementation of a glimpse into the life
of Hugh Nibley.
An Insightful Account of a Fascinating Man.......2005-08-22
With Hugh Nibley: A Consecrated Life, author Boyd Peterson has produced of the most fascinating biographies I have ever read. I had been an avid reader of Hugh Nibley's writings ever since 1975, when a LDS member in a branch in Kendall, England, loaned me a copy of his 1957 work, An Approach to the Book of Mormon. Nibley's astonishingly wide ranging erudition, brilliant prose, fascinating insights, and blew me away, and I have continued to read and draw on his work and example for 30 years. I looked forward to reading the biography for many years, and enjoyed the publication of several chapters in a variety of LDS academic journals, and I talked with Peterson for a few moments after he had given a presentation on Nibley's WWI experiences at a symposium in Salt Lake City. The long wait for the book was worth it. The book is a clear-eyed labor of love, and a masterpiece in its own right.
Peterson's introduction to Hugh Nibley came via his marriage to Zina Nibley, Hugh's youngest daughter. He began working on the biography over a decade ago, gathering correspondence, diaries, conducting interviews with family, friends, acquaintances, over many years. He documents everything, footnoting his sources for everything, obviously influenced in this approach by the man himself. (In contrast, Martha Beck's recent book footnotes nothing, and the difference in commitment shows. At one point Beck refers to the biography of her father, but it is clear that she only read the page that mentions her accusations against her father-in Peterson, page 400. All of the key claims that she makes about Hugh's state of mind, financial situation, beliefs, and scholarship, are contradicted and amply documented in Peterson's biography. For example, when she claims that he couldn't job outside of BYU, Peterson records several occasions when Hugh was offered much more money to go elsewhere.)
Daughter Zina, Peterson's wife, includes a fascinating introduction, consisting of 12 vignettes designed show what it was like to grow up as Hugh Nibley's daughter. Considering the hoopla over the recent publication of Martha Nibley Beck's expose, Leaving the Saints, Zina's chapter here offers a fascinatingly different portrait of Hugh Nibley as a father, from one was only 18 months younger than Martha, who slept in the bottom bunk under where Martha slept until she was a teenager. For instance, in vignette 10, on page xx, "She comments that "Daddy bought the big colorful French comics at BYU's bookstore, and read them to Martha and me as bedtime stories. He would point to the words and illustration details and talk about them; not just the story plots and the history, but also the language, explaining French pronounciation, and how much more regular the spelling is in Latin languages that are conservative, compared to English, which since it borrows words from so many sources, has an irregular spelling system. When I got to first grade, I couldn't read very well, but I sure could misspell." And she concludes, building on a memory of her daddy pushing her in a swing hanging from a tree limb, "Growing up with Hugh Nibley as a father, I learned this: the world, with all its exhilaration, giddiness, and danger, is actually pretty safe, as long as you are on a course that strong ropes and sturdy knots and unmovable, unshakable faith pushing you higher. Then all you have to do is hang on tight."
The biography proper continues with accounts of Hugh Nibley's Scottish ancestry, and his early life in Oregon. From there, Peterson begins to alternate biographical chapters with thematic chapters. For example, there are chapters on "Hugh Nibley as a Social Critic" and "Hugh Nibley as a Naturalist", "The Clown of Professions: Hugh Nibley and Scholarship", "Hugh Nibley and War" and "The Home Dance: Hugh Nibley Among the Hopi," "Taking Himself Lightly: The Wit of Hugh Nibley." All of these are fascinating in themselves, even though this approach brings some repetition, the different focus adds to the flavor of the volume, and shows the range of Nibley's interests, influence, and thought.
The biographical chapters all contain rich details, observations, and interesting stories. We get the account of Hugh's NDE, his LDS mission to Germany in the 1930s, his six weeks alone in the Oregon forests, his UCLA education, his joining the army in WWII, experiences in intelligence, and in combat with the 101st Airborne Division at Utah Beach, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and his experience of the war's aftermath.
In contrast to Martha's scanty gossipy speculations about Hugh's mother, here we get a fully drawn portrait, drawn from interviews and letters. Hugh's wife, Phyllis, also comes across as a fully rounded personality, with her own interests and distinctive strong character compared to the reduction to beehive hairdo, and sock-puppet witness that appears in Leaving the Saints. We get the legendary story of Hugh's courtship (his decision to marry the first girl he met at BYU, who turned out to be Phyllis) and the development of a growing family.
Peterson includes both biographical and survey chapters discussing Hugh Nibley's scholarship on the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Temple in antiquity. All of these chapters show an excellent grasp of Hugh thought and work, as well as the critical responses to it, and the impact it continues to have on the larger LDS community, and beyond.
Every reader will have favorite passages. I was fascinated by the friendship between the Yugoslavian basketball star, Kresmir Cosic and Hugh Nibley, as well as that between Nibley and Egyptologist Klaus Bayer. I have been touched and inspired by his discipleship and commitment as well as his scholarship. Peterson concludes by discussing that "Not only is the private man consistent with the public man, but Hugh's actions have been consistent with his words." A brilliant book. A fine tribute and an important account of a fascinating man.
Tribute to LDS scholar/leader.......2005-02-19
This is one of the best biographies I have read in years. Bios can be hard to write (or read) because covering a whole life is not easy to do. I think Boyd Petersen does a great job here. Every other chapter is devoted to teachings of Hugh Nibley. This provides a great balance to the story since teachings make up such a big part of Hugh Nibley's life. Hugh Nibley has lived a most fascinating life. I would rank this right up there with great biographies of the prophets (such as Ezra T. Benson, Gordon B. Hinckley and Spencer W. Kimball). I can't quite get through all of Nibley's most scholarly work, but I appreciate much of what he has given to the LDS community, the best book being "Approaching Zion". Read the biography - and if you read any book of Hugh Nibley's, read "Approaching Zion".
It doesn't get any better!!.......2005-01-30
I have read many Latter-day Saint Bios, and many non-LDS one's, and this is the best of them all. Boyd Petersen is remarkable in his writing style, presentation, scholarship, and detail. I imagine that if there were a college class on "How to Write a Good Bio," this book would be the manual! It truly does not get any better than this! There really is no better source about this man than this book; and you would be hard pressed to find it in any better presentation!
Hugh Nibley may only be an LDS known scholar, but when it comes to a man's legacy and impact upon the world around him, you would be hard pressed to find another as successful and powerful as Nibley. In this honest and 'bare all' approach, Petersen allows us the glimpse into the life of a man whose intellect and impact rivals any other man or woman who has ever lived. The reader quickly becomes aware of the fact that they are reading about a life that will have forever changed the world. "Hugh Nibleys" only come around once in a while. He is a man that could, and did, raise the level of scholarship, study and human knowledge. He could have been anything he wanted. If you are looking for a book that is well written and about an amazing subject... this book is for you.
In my next life... I want to come back as Hugh Nibley, or at least have his brain! Perhaps, the most brilliant man of our day!
Well-paced, sometimes choppy, but great overall........2003-09-07
I had more fun reading this book than any book I've read in a while. A reader who doesn't have knowledge of The Church of Jesus Christ (Mormon) to which Nibley belongs would probably not find this book interesting.
However, for someone who is familiar with Nibley's many and varied writings this book is very entertaining and informative, much like Nibley himself.
Criticisms of the book are the following: 1. The author alternates chronological chapters with topical chapters and it is sometimes difficult to remember what part of Nibley's life you are reading about. Similarly, this means that many parts are redundant.
2. I would like to have heard more about Nibley's political adventures. As a student at BYU from 1977 to 1988 (nobody ever accused me of being overly bright)you could always count on Nibley to support the Democratic candidate. Usually Nibley would give them permission to hand out a pamphlet he had written that was something about a parable of giving up our birthright. My roommates and I read this thing several times and never could quite figure out what Nibley was getting at. But we always felt vaguely guilty when we were done.
3. The author several times stated as if it were fact things like "conservative extremism continued to characterize BYU and Mormon culture". Having been part of Mormon Culture and BYU for many of those years, this is not true. There were professors like Reed Benson, son of Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, who worked as a Birch society coordinator but most of these people were the ones most likely to agree with Nibley. J. Reuben Clark could not have been more anti-war. Skousen, Reed Benson, H. Verlan Andersen (future general authority, author of "Many are called, but few are chosen", and Utah legislator) and others were among those most likely to agree with Nibley. The Conservatives on campus always complained that the University tilted too far leftward. And as a Biology major, that department's leftish slant was no less prominent than the Department of Religion's rightward slant. Having attended and visited numerous colleges since then I consider BYU the school with the most academic freedom, something Nibley no doubt recognized and benefited from.
Also, I would like to have heard a little more about the travails of Nibley being treated like a Rock Star. Every dubious wacko on campus at one time or another would show up at Nibley's office or home and it was always amazing to me that Nibley not only didn't call the police but would treat everyone well and answer their questions. Nibley was truly a man of the people. At the "One Eternal Round" lecture a few years ago Nibley was almost mobbed afterward with autograph seekers and confidantes who wished to tell Nibley what their latest "research" showed.
The greatest strength of this book is the author's obvious great love and respect for this great man. He shares letters and viewpoints that simply would be unavailable to anyone other than a family member.
The author also does a wonderful job summing up Nibley's articles, ideas and research - something very difficult to do and it shows the author has quite an intellect of his own.
Lastly the author did a wonderful job of getting at primary sources that interacted directly with Nibley - much like Nibley's scholarship.
Overall, this book was simply wonderful, entertaining and thoughtful.

Contemporary Wedding Cakes.......2006-08-18
This is one of the cake decorating books that give details and steps to how to decorate. The ideas are fresh and achievable. Stunning pictures. Highly recommended. A pleasure to just read and look at the photos.
Excellent for ideas!.......2006-07-05
I am in the process of planning my wedding and I just couldn't imagine what my cake would look like. While looking through all sorts of cake books, including this one, I found my perfect cake and have not found a more beautiful idea since! Although this book doesn't tell you how to make them very well...it has excellent pictures and you can easily take it to a professional and they could do it. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for something different or for something elegant!
Creativity at its Best.......2002-07-11
The cakes in this book are not for the novice cake decorator. However for the experienced cake decorator it gives directions for some of the most amazing and beautiful cakes you have ever seen. If you are skilled beyond Wilton 1-2-3, and you are experienced in the use of rolled fondant and gum paste, give this book a try.
Unique wedding cake design ideas........2001-03-27
I enjoyed many of the off-beat ideas for wedding cakes in this book. Some of them are not very practical for the everyday wedding couple, but that being said, I sold two cakes based on photos from this book within the first week of purchasing it! Paid for itself already. Good directions for creating each of the styles shown.
Disappointing.......2000-11-09
I found this book to be disappointing at best. When I think of a cake book, I expect more than merely TWO cake recipes to be in it. Also, the decoration ideas, while unique, were somewhat childish looking. My advice: don't waste your time!

Book Description
As minimalism in interior design becomes more prevalent, a new counter-movement has arisen.Eschewing the clean, precise, empty spaces minimalist themes promote, some homeowners and designers are adopting a resplendent, grand, baroque, look to their spaces. As a reaction against minimalism, this movement could only have one name: maximalism. This new movement is explored through exquisite photography of lush projects drawn from across the world.

A Work of Art.......2007-04-20
If you are looking for a how-to Better Homes and Gardens or Martha Stewart book this is NOT for you. If you want to be inspired by artistic creativity then buy this book with an open mind. Obviously the last reviewer has no sense of personal style and needs simplistic step-by-step books to tell her how to decorate.
1. If you are looking for a book to shelve next to your Jane Austen collection this is not for you.
2. If you do not have a sense of humor this is not for you.
3. If your idea of decorating consists of flowery doilies and antique dolls this is not for you.
4. If your perfect party has tupperware this is not for you.
This is a book of highly creative individuals' homes, including stylish rock icon Lenny Kravitz. Buy it to be inspired by whimsical details and to appreciate other personal opinions of art. This is a wonderful and fascinating study of eclectic styles.

Vulgar -adjective
1. characterized by ignorance of or lack of good breeding or taste: vulgar ostentation. Vulgar use of color and materials.
2. indecent; obscene; a vulgar work; a vulgar interior; a vulgar gesture.
3. crude; coarse; unrefined.
4. lacking in distinction, aesthetic value, or charm; banal; ordinary: a vulgar interior.
--- The unrefined, inelegant, lowbrow interiors presented in MXM: Maximalist Interiors offer the reader all of the above - and more.
This book shocks the reader with juvenile, violent collisions of design elements, defiantly trashy, and antiestablishment interiors. It endeavors to replace a lack of expert dexterity, respect for history, ingenuity and adroit use of materials with cheap shock value decorating ploys. Trite clichés such as psychedelic garden gnomes, silver spray-painted mannequins, hot red shaggy fake fur upholstery and homoerotic metaphors. Herein lays much sturdy competition for the Bordello-Baroque awards.
A London mechanic's workshop converted to Michael Davis and Andrew Logan's love nest, features a master bedroom with all the unrestraint of the bathroom shrine featured in Midnight Cowboy.
MXM is a concocted design shibboleth painfully seeking recognition and legitimacy.

cooltype 2wo would have to be my favourite book in my design collection, i am always refering to it, it's just full of great new ideas. tonnes of samples of print design, samples from people like 'the attik' and 'me company'. another must have.
a worthy sequel.......1999-12-28
the original COOL TYPE is a must for every graphic designer's library. this new book is a good follow-up, providing an updated overview of the profession. it showcases the latest cutting edge designers working with type. the one flaw is the book's glossing over some designers by showcasing too few of their respective pieces. however, because it condenses dozens of design talents into one volume, COOL TYPE 2WO allows the reader to see a cross-section of design styles, without his having to purchase various expensive monographs. a similar, and very good, book is RADICAL GRAPHICS/GRAPHIC RADICALS.

Book Description
``As polished and perceptive a biography as you would hope from a writer who has done justice to Fellini and Bunuel.'' New Statesman & Society Steven Spielberg is one of the cinema's greatest enchanters, with a spellbinding capacity--and a box office record--matched by very few. His power now exceeds that of the greatest moguls of Hollywood's golden era, and films like the Indiana Jones trilogy, ``ET,'' ``Close Encounters of the Third Kind,'' ``Jurassic Park,'' and the Oscar-winning ``Schindler's List''--seen by billions around the world--have forever changed the way movies are made. How was it that this ``movie brat'' became one of the most formidable players on the global entertainment scene? John Baxter has applied considerable scholarship in his quest to discover what makes Spielberg tick, and it is a success story that he tells with relish. Now in paperback, with a filmography and 55 photographs. John Baxter is a film critic, novelist and biographer; among his many books are Bunuel, Fellini, The Hollywood Exiles, and The Cinema of John Ford. 460 pp 5 x 8 55 b/w photos
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but troubling.......2007-02-21
As someone relatively young, born and raised when Spielberg was already popular for Jaws, I've always found him an iconic figure but have never exactly been a fan-boy. Enjoyed the movies, but never really succumbed to worship. That said...
Mr. Baxter's attempt seems admirable on sight alone -- it's a large book -- but while reading I couldn't help but take issue with his tone and perspective. Rather than acknowledging the obvious talent it takes to craft the stories the way Spielberg does, the author focuses on an idea that Spielberg is more manipulative businessman than creative force. A simple viewing of even some of his earliest work, like Jaws, diminishes Mr. Baxter's point considerably.
Let's talk about the creative process and how he's able to visualize and achieve what he has; his business acumen at a young age just seems too obvious a point to harp on.
This book has plenty of interesting anecodotes and armchair-psychology ideas. But I'm struggling to get to page 200, don't feel compelled to finish and don't feel I've gleaned much as to HOW Spielberg gets things done as a director. I understand that biographers probably often feel the need to develop a strong point-of-view; maybe Mr. Baxter's attempt just missed the mark (for me).
Good, but not great........2005-06-17
While John Baxter's informative and interesting biography of Steven Spielberg is a solid examine, it fails to dig deep into its own questions and ethos. The early years at Universal Studios are well told and compelling, the author seems to lose interest halfway through concerning Temple of Doom and The Color Purple. Some chapters are prearranged too much breathing space, while other essential proceedings are frustratingly twee. To his credit, Baxter does a good job at showcasing some of the most excellent films (JAWS, RAIDERS and SCHINDLER'S LIST) but ultimately it lacks the depth that made Ian Freer's Spielberg book the best. This is one for the completists though, but for someone more perceptive, there are plenty of superior books.
I want more !.......2000-04-17
The book only scrathes the surface of this splendid director. Several chapters on the directors movies are simply to "thin". There's no information that we haven't heard of before. Instead read the book on GEORGE LUCAS by same auther. It's much better.
A very informative book about a great filmmaker.......1999-06-09
This is a very interesting book about a filmmaker. What i like is that it spends most about his career. It was very well written biography.
Don't be fooled.......1997-04-28
Despite its respectable cover this is only slightly more serious than the celebrity tell-alls of recent months. Incidentally it also has at least a couple of factual flaws even mild Internet research could have corrected
