Devlin of Duncaer has done the impossible. Fizzle -- Did the Same Person Write This?.......2007-02-27

"Devlin's Justice" is the third book in the "Sword of Change" series. The story takes up where book 2 left off, with Devlin returning to his kingdom's capital city. Upon arriving, Devlin is kidnapped & taken off to be tortured -- graphically and at length. Meanwhile, the king has asked an ally to send troops as aid, which they do but not quite in the manner that the king had intended.

Although Devlin's name appears in the title, he appears only briefly in the beginning & middle of the book, relegated to a bit part until the last 1/4 of the book. When Devlin does appear, his personality is unrecognizable and he has skills and abilities that he didn't have at the end of the previous book. Most of this story centers not on Devlin, but rather upon other people whom we've met in the previous books. Perhaps trying to cover up the weak plot, the point-of-view changes every couple pages.

Overall, this book will not appeal to people who enjoyed books #1 and #2. The mood is occasionally quite nasty, lots of torture and Devlin doing a few despicable acts. Not recommended for teens or sensitive readers. I recommend you read the first in this series instead.

As an end to a series one senses that somewhere mid way through the book the author decided she had enough already and stopped. Things to get us to the conclusion were rushed and glossed over where we did not have that earlier on.

Disappointing

What started out as a great story ended up as mediocre. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but not what one expects of the genre. The first book started good, but it just sort of pettered out near the end. Afraid can't recommend the series.

I've recently come across one that is far better than this one. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

Very poorly written .......2004-10-06

I am very disappointent. It is outright boring stuff. Heroes are just sketches, names with not a bit of real life or emotions behind them. Incomprehensive sorsery, stupid empire, stupid plot, stupid dialogs, I got bored out of my mind at the first half of the first bool already. Just had to read it through before donating to the local library. These books are a good example how not to write fantasy.
Try Robin Hobb or Guy Kay for a taste of first class writing

Great book, great series.......2004-06-24

This was a good series. Watching Devlin grow as a person from a down-trodden man with little direction and future to regent of the kingdom was an excellent tale. One of the things I like most about Devlin is his down to earth attitude and honor. Even when he could have easily ceased power, because of his status as Chosen One and immense popularity, he still chose to serve honorably. He does not want power.

In Devlin's Justice, Devlin is returning from Duncaer with the Sword of Light. He is betrayed and captured. During this time Jorsk is "invaded" and Devlin begins a rebellion and defeats the conquerors.

The ending was very satisfying and Devlin, Stephen, and others are changed by the war, and other events of the past two books. Author Patricia Bray ties all this together nicely. Devlin's Justice was definitely not an afterthought. I am looking forward to Ms. Bray's future work.

A familier story, except Mike is going to the Moon, where a research colony is being built. His story and that of the friends he'll make is filled with the latest details on what it might be like to live on the final frontier in the not so distant future. Recommended for pre teen and young teen readers with an interest in space exploration.

An enlightening book.......2003-09-13

I found this book while on a business trip to Bangalore and was inexplicably motivated to buy it, even though I had never heard of Dr Svoboda before. Perhaps I was fated to buy this book -- as one who has had a significant influence of LORD SATURN on his life.

I found the book to be one that gives a lot of information on not only LORD SATURN but also the various other "grahas", their influences (beneficial and malignant), and an outline/summary of the methods of propitiating them. And, of course, it has a wealth of information on LORD SATURN. Dr Svoboda has done a lot of study to write this book and his "Bhakti Bhav" (loosely meaning "Devotional Attitude") comes through very well in the book.

Thanks to Dr Svoboda for enabling me to access this ancient wisdom culled from various old, rare texts of Hinduism in various languages.

And most of all, thanks to LORD SATURN for motivating me to pick up and read this book, thereby enabling even me (of admittedly insufficient knowledge)to understand His powers.

I don't get it.......2001-09-27

I really don't understand what this is supposed to be about. I certainly didn't get anything meaningful out of it. The points made about the various grahas are very basic themes familiar to anyone who knows something about jyotish. The Saturn story is an elaboration of the trials and tribulations of sade sati, but I didn't really get anything out of it. I would like to be able to understand this more deeply; maybe I just missed the point.

I've studied Western astrology for over 30 years. I would always have a feeling of fear around the planet Saturn, whether in a natal chart or transit. I learned about this book in the Book Reviews of The Mountain Astrologer magazine, a publication I find a necessity of life! When I bought the book, I was going through some major life challenges. This book taught me that I needed an attitude adjustment when it came to Saturn. Due to this book, I did not give up on myself during those challenges. Two years later, I find that things I used to dread I now welcome into my life because they've helped me grow spiritually. Saturn has taught me, through the mythology in this book, how to RESPECT boundaries and limits. More importantly, it has helped ME set boundaries (around myself) for others to respect.

This is a book you must read if you are an astrologist. This is about great wisdom of the ages which we can apply in our lives today! Blessings...

A masterful retelling of the "Sani Mahatmyam" with a wonderful personal touch as in all his writings.This book very expertly shows the effects of the planets on one's everyday life, and offers an object lesson in why we must pursue spirituality as if our lives depended on it. This therapeutic myth on the Greatness of Saturn by Robert Svoboda presents the ancient, Vedic, Puranic and Tantric knowledge in a modern language appealing to all people in the world. Dr. Svoboda has done an excellent job in presenting the materials, appealing to those who know, or not know Sanskrit.

Dr. Svoboda has communicated his deep and profound understanding of Jyotir and Aurvedic knowledge. It is a fortune that I came across this book through Sri Prasannan Herke, the astrologer in the Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi Devi) Ashram. I am thankful to him for pointing to this book. Amma's infinite Grace and Blessings have made this all possible.

The Pioneer Lady's Country Kitchen

Wow! I'm a big fan of 'country' style cookbooks (cookbooks which leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside because of stories, pictures and just plain old good food), and Pioneer Lady's Country Kitchen was quite simply awesome. Its chock full of treasured cooking memories from the authors' life during the depression. After reading this book, I really got the feel for what life was like for the author growing up on the farm, surrounded by aunts, cousins, and home-cooked food.

Most of the recipes appear to be quite easy. I read this book in a day. Sure to delight those who like a bit of nostalgia with their recipes.

This is a must have for Hall China enthusiasts. The format is clear and easy to follow. There is so much great information with pictures and pricing info. for a wide variety of Hall China pieces. I carry the book with me whenever I am shopping at Antique Stores looking for Hall China.

The edition is as complete a guide for the mian lines of Hall China as you can probably find, however I think the photo layout and quality were better int he previous version.

The book of Hall China's golden years!.......2004-07-14

The Whitmyers obviously worked for years and simply produced "The Informative Reference" to the wonderful Hall China Company and its long production of products. If you love Hall China, this is the book that you HAVE to have in your library. Packed with facts, photos, information found nowhere else but in this volume. Through the help of dealers, collectors and friends; they were able to show Hall's artistry and employee craftsmanship at its finest.
The color photos pop from the pages as the digital up-to-date photo process allows for this volume. It is so wonderful to see so much Hall China and accessories one might never have a chance to see otherwise if it were not included in this book. Hats off to the Whitmyers and all those who allowed them to photograph such fabulous collections.

Worth every penny and more.......2001-05-09

This is one of the best collector reference books I have ever seen. It is laid out in an easy to read and refer format and the pictures are fantastic. It contains well over 100 pages on teapots alone. Descriptions are clear, interesting and well written.

This is a perfect addition to the Hall China or teapot collector's library.

I am in awe!!.......2001-05-05

One of the most beautifully set up collector's books I have seen. The Hall China items are photographed and then all the backgrounds are eliminated and they are arranged "floating" on a solid color background.... just like a color version of a few old Hall China Catalog pages I have framed... only those "old" catalogs were in black and white... to have all the patterns shown in color and arranged this way is a tribute to the Whitmyer's artistry.

The scope and number of patterns shown was expanded and the wait for the new edition was worth it! The only complaint I have is the prices, especially on Autumn Leaf, seem to be a bit too low, and some items show values much lower than they regularly sell for on Internet Auction services. One can only hope to buy a Autumn Leaf batter bowl for $2,500!

Order it now, I think you will not be disapointed!

Very extensive collection of pots. There were several I have never seen before in any other publication.
Could be organized in a more user friendly manner, but would still reccomend the book to any Hall collector.

Yesterday I received this beautiful book on Tea and Coffee Pots that have been produced by the Hall China Company. If you collect Tea and/or Coffee Pots this is a must have book. It has all the Tea and Coffee Pots that the Hall China Company produced from 1903 to today. The just released book by Gary and Paula Barnebey has over 800 color photos in this 240-page book. This is a well written and researched book has an extensive bibliography. The book contains Tables with general color lines produced through the years and availability over time, a color
chart, and much, much more.

Biblical Ambiguities poses as its central question: When we read a passage in the Hebrew Bible, how do we know whether the passage was meant literally or metaphorically? This study argues that our assumptions as to how language works influences the way we interpret biblical texts. Drawing upon contemporary linguistic theory, Aaron seeks to place before the reader a strategy for deciphering biblical idioms within a theory of semantics, using divine imagery in the Hebrew Bible as the primary focal point. This book presents a gradient model of meaning based on Relevance Theory and the writings of Ray Jackendoff. While numerous biblical passages are considered in detail, the main test case for Aaron´s approach to meaning and metaphor is the Israelite attitude toward idols. Although biblical ideology is usually portrayed as contrasting a literalist idolatry with a more sophisticated Israelite theology, Aaron argues that policies regarding icons had less to do with theology than the politics of governance and language. Part of that critique regards common scholarly assumptions about the literal or metaphorical character of divine imagery and idols. The metaphorization or the literalization of biblical images has served as a reading strategy since ancient times, and often persists in scholarly discourse today. Perhaps as important as Aaron´s suggestion of an alternative approach to the problem of distinguishing metaphorical from literal language, is that his argument raises our consciousness of how we go about interpretive acts when writing the history of Israelite theology.

It is scholarly in its method. However, the conclusions are just that the Bible contains ambiguities and that some ambiguities are more ambiguous than others. Ambiguity may function as a Bible code, but God will tell us when the scrolls will be undone.

BAH!.......2002-12-27

Eh. Pretty disappointing. I'm a fan of swiping airline safety cards when I can from different airlines as I too enjoy the artwork on such cards. This book is well presented, but I found the content to be far too abstract. I understand that they had to avoid copyright issues and such, but it seems that the airplane safety theme has gone to waste, as half of the spreads don't appear to have anything to do with it. Maybe it will grow on me, as work like this tends to, but I found it disappointing overall.

This is by far the strangest book i ran into in a long time.
Its a unique, very beautiful book. Its craftmanship is up to perfection. No words- just beautiful images based on vector graphics. These images are printed on the highest quality paper. It has a very nice, rich touch to it. The object itself is wraped in inflatble plastic. Its apperance is amazing.
When you hold it in your hands you just want one thing- to have one of your own.
But after you embrace this one of a kind thing, you realize that it is really very very empty. It has no content. It says nothing. Its beautifull imagery remain without meaning, without life. It is like a flower held in suspended animation- beautiful, cold and dead.

A book greatly over-hyped: the same old thing, a ho-hum biography from a band whose life can be placed on paper more vively than colours. Recommend it for a new fan, but not for one looking for the greatest biography on Oasis.
