Book Description
Finally back in print, Jane Vandenburgh's "brilliant debut-startlingly idiosyncratic, intelligent, funny, and painfully moving"
-Publishers Weekly
It's southern California in the early Sixties, and Charlotte is a teenager, which is bad enough. She also has strange grandparents, with whom she lives, a schizophrenic ventriloquist alcoholic mother who appears and disappears regularly from her life, and only vague information about the father who died before Charlotte was born.
With so much craziness in the family, Charlotte figures, whether it's "nature" or "nurture," she's doomed. In Failure to Zigzag, Jane Vandenburgh gracefully zigzags between hilarity and sorrow as she recounts Charlotte's attempts to grow up and to practice "sanity as a form of revenge."
Customer Reviews:
Maybe it's me............2006-01-23
Like many people, I gave Jane Vandenburgh a try because of Anne Lamott's recommendation. It was not for me. I agree with the other reviewer who said it was too hard to follow, and I usually read difficult books as a former English major. I must admit I checked this out of the library and could not finish it, it's rare for me to abandon a book once I start reading it, but I couldn't force myself to get through it. Life is too short and I have too many other books in my "to be read" pile. In this pile right now, also from the library, is "The Physics of Sunset", also by Vandenburgh. We'll see if I like that any better, the 2 stars in my review is because the author can definitely write.
An amazing read..........2004-10-18
I though this book was amazing. It is one of my favorite stories of all time. The entangled story of Charlotte, her mother, and the family is truly intriguing. I had the honor to have Jane as a creative writing teacher at George Washington University. Her depth as a person and an author is shown in this book wholeheartedly. I would recommend it to anyone who did not grow up "the perfect American life," which pretty much applies to everyone. Buy it, Read it, Love it!
Ridiculous Book... hard to follow.......2001-05-07
I didn't enjoy this book at all! I found myself struggling to get through it and forcing myself to read it. I thought this book was hard to follow as there were many flashbacks within flashbacks and you never really knew what was presently happening. I thought Katrinka's personality was mildy ridiculous considering her mental problem and her ventroliquism. This book really didn't have much of a plot, just the stupid idiosyncracies that Charlotte goes through growing up with her mother. Who couldn't write about that. I thought this novel was a total waste of time.
a story that should be heard.......1998-10-01
Jane Vandenburgh's novel, "Failure to ZigZag" has been a rare novel that falls into the-why have I not met another living sole out there who has read this book-catagory. For the past eight years I have been eagerly awaiting another book by this amazing author. However, she has yet to publish another novel. This particular novel is perhaps one of the most wonderful stories I have ever read about a longing that many of us share; namely,to still try to unconditionally love those who continually engage in self-destructive behaviors.

Customer Reviews:
The Worst Ending I have ever read!.......2007-07-25
I have all "The Banned and The Banished" books and I was really excited that I got to the last book and I was hoping to read a book that ends in a way that left me in tears. Well, it did, but in tears of anger. James Clemens decided to end his 5-Book-Long series in the worst possible way. It just . . . ends. It tells you what happened to Joach (my least favorite character), but you never know what happened to Er'ril or Elena or anyone else! Also, he decided to throw in a very boring sidestory that really had no purpose in the story. I think that he just got bored of the series and ended it so he can start his MUCH better book series, The Godslayer Chronicles, but either way, after 5 books of Er'ril of Standi and his fight against the Gul'gotha, this is the worst book to end to the series with. The only reason the story got a star above 1 is because of the spicy scene between Er'ril and Elena. Other than that, shame on you, James, but at least "Shadowfall" and "Hinterland" are amazing books.
An amazing conclusion for and amazing series.......2006-06-30
Wow the adventures that Elena has gone throught to get here were spine tingling and now her adventure came to an end that is garenteed to surprise all.
Pleasant Read.......2006-06-05
The final book in the series which started with Wit'ch Fire, Storm, War, Gate and finally Star. While I did enjoy the series, and the writing was solid, it did not blow me away completely. The accents (') were a little annoying since every race, a lot of characters and places had them. Many familiar fantasy creatures were used such as goblins and dwarves, but Clemons put a nice spin on them to make them a little differant, as well as a unique take on magic. He had some great ideas and the feel of a great sprawling epic. I don't think this will be remembered as one of the great fantasy stories of all time, I do think this is a great beginning for a new fantasy writer and I will be picking up the book Shadowfall in his new series.
The story ends.......2005-02-07
The story ends with the final insallment of the Banned and the Banished series. And it does, in fact, end.
Elena and her motley crew face the biggest challenges yet in this climax to the story arc. Here we learn exactly who and what the Dark Lord is (a rather disappointing choice in my opinion, though unexpected) and more importantly, why he has corrupted the land (and an even bigger disappointment).
The reasons are hard to believe in that they really don't hold with the amount of devestation the Dark Lord has caused.
This last chapter as a whole is a good end to the series however. We do lay to rest many questions, although the ultimate question "what happens next?" isn't answered for us. It almost seems as though Clemens is leaving a spark with which to start a new series about the land of Alasea. At one point we are simply cut off from the stories of our characters' lives with only one small insight into what might have happened to them after the final showdown.
The end isn't entirely disappointing with the well-written battles we've come to expect and at least the characters aren't left hanging.
The character introduced in this book as an addition to Elena's crew seems underused. Almost as if Clemens had more in mind for him, but was cut short on length.
Some of the paths he sets his characters on in this final chapter are somewhat out of character, making it seem like he put these things in randomly simply to move the plot forward and with no real reasoning behind them. It left me feeling betrayed after reading about characters I've come to know doing things they would never do.
But overall the series holds up as a good read and worth the time. It isn't as brilliant as it could have been, but it doesn't completely lose shape and fall apart after the first 3 books either.
Awesome!.......2004-01-04
My daughter and I read Wit'ch Fire when it first came out and loved it! We could hardly wait for each new book to be published and would read each in 1-2 days. Clemens' writing takes the reader into the story with such vividly described characters and events that I almost felt like I was right there with them. I felt almost disappointed that the series ended. I have purchased the entire set and everyone who has read these books has loved them!

The thousands who work there, human and alien both, have a single mission: To care for all patients, of all species. At Sector General, anything can happen-and frequently does.James White's tales of Sector General are lively, humorous, and humane, at times shot through with a healer's anger at violence and destruction. These are endlessly inventive dramas of civility and spirituality, tempered with White's gently wicked wit and his keen eye for the remarkable in the everyday. Now, in a single omnibus, the second three volumes of the series-Ambulance Ship, Sector General, and Star Healer-return to print in complete and corrected editions, including a sequence ("Spacebird") omitted from previous American editions of Ambulance Ship. The volume is introduced by Hugo-winning SF writer and critic David Langford.

Finally, James White is being reprinted........2003-06-28
AMBULANCE SHIP, SECTOR GENERAL, AND STAR HEALER are the three stories in this volume. These are medical s/f stories. I had been trying to track down the Sector General stories that are out of print, when this was published. Unfortunately, quite a few of the stories are out of print. Even the libraries have only a few of the stories. These are books about people/aliens/things and how we may interact on a medical level. Mr. White offers viewpoints and ideas on inter-species relationships and the stories are always nicely done. The only drawback (?) is that you shouldn't read all the stories all at once. I found that if I read something different in between reading each book, the stories read better and had a little more tenseness.

Healing Society
A Prescription for Global Enlighenment
Dr. Seung-Heun Lee
Creator and Grand Master of Dahnhak and Brain Respiration
We have arrived at a crossroads in the spiritual history or humanity. We must recognize the potential for - indeed the need for - a mass spiritual awakening in which humankind finally comprehends the truth that we are all one. World religion, institutions, and prophets throughout history have failed to accomplish this global breakthrough in awareness. How will this fundamental spiritual understanding finally be articulated to the masses? Energy. Called Ki in eastern traditions, energy is the natural bridge that connects body, mind, and spirit, and is the perfect tool for allowing people to feel and understand the universe's most profound truth.
·From the author of Brain Respiration (Han Mun Hwa Publishers, 1998)
·Brings the concept of spiritual enlightenment our of churches and monasteries and into our homes and workplaces
·Provides the only tool - lacking in most of our world's spiritual traditions - that can be used by all individuals, all the time, to experience the most fundamental spiritual truth
·There are 360 Dahnhak centers worldwide
Customer Reviews:
How enlightened is the author ... like Neale Walsch is ???.......2004-10-06
Seung Heun was reminded at the end of this book on p.85 of a story from Lao Tzu:
Lao Tze "had a bright student who trained for 10 years in order to be able to control the flow of Ki energy to such an extent that he could form an energy bridge over a nearby river. One day, he showed Lao Tse what he could do...Expeting high praise, the student was flabbergasted when Lao Tse turned purple with anger and shouted at him at the top of his voice, "YOU STUPID IDIOT. You spent 10 years to a stupid trick, all this time, there was a cheap ferry to get accross the river at any time you wished!
Being an incarnation of Lao Tze, let me lead by example from the only letter i gave personally to Jimmy Carter & Rosalynn:
dearest peaceMaker Jimmy and mother Rosalynn,
First I do thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for humankind so far and for who you are. This letter may reach your heart(s) on George Washington's birthday and is a wake up call for both of you to forgive ourselves even more.
I have asked around 200 adults the following question: IS REAL LOVE CONDITIONAL or UNCONDITIONAL?
More than 95% do choose unconditional, out of that less than 5% can declare they are being it, while the rest say that they know that it is unconditional but can't do it (in China.)
I have asked around the following question: in almost EVERY NATION on earth there are AT LEAST 2 SLAVE CLASSES or caste, my definition of slavery is when we force another human to do what we ourselves don't even want to be. I haven't yet found a person who can tell me who they are?
This is not a test, simply an observation of what is. The answer is SOLDIERS and CHILDREN.
The only reason to have soldiers is to force them to kill fellow human beings using any available weapons, we are the ones TRAINING MURDERERS. The only reason we are forcing children to get educated is for them to compete like GLADIATORS by first using mental weaponry. To DISALLOW that we are ONE HUMANKIND and to enforce the notion that some humans are superior to others and any inferior humans deserve to be at least exploited, if not disposed, by the superior ones. No wonder the US is the first country with incidence of children happily shooting and disposing of fellow humans and showing us how clearly insane we all are for allowing such forceful enslavement, and our children are using exactly the same behavior we taught them with our own blindly learned prejudice and acquiescence.
To ABOLISH THIS kind of SLAVERY, ONE simple UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ANSWER is-Start telling all politicians and generals and any humans that their army and weapons can either be offered to the United Nations or to the temporary leadership of a massing group of unconditional lovers for all life under the temporary leadership of a triumvirate. If this joint-chief-command ever choose to send this volunteer global army to even mediate dispute between warring factions or to forcefully remove some confirmed dictator or to prevent possible genocide, then they will automatically resign their post and leave the function to another triumvirate, preferably one who disagreed with them. This is missing in every constitution as a check and balance. Start telling all humans that firearms and explosive cannot be bought at any price and that all firearms and explosive are for use by this global army only. For the few humans who enjoy the sound of firearms they can only practice shooting in shooting ranges at dead targets. In the long run this standing army can simply become a corps of engineers specializing in explosive and dangerous situation and helping in emergency disaster cases, such as evacuation and re-building.
For the first elected triumvirate I would love to be able to choose from such unconditional lovers for whole humankind as Jimmy Carter or House Rep. Barbara Lee of California (hers was the sole vote in either the House or Senate opposing a resolution authorizing military action against the terrorists ... The House vote was 420 to 1. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/16/national/16LEE.html) or Nelson Mandela or Boris Yeltsin or Mikhail Gorbachev or the first lady president of the Philippines Aquino, etc.
As for liberating the unconditional love that is present in all children before the age of 5, education after 5 will be modified to only include self-paced-study available via Internet with guidance counselors in each different subject. The core curriculum will be based on first-person confirmable examples of unconditional love and that fear is its only opposite. Schools and churches and libraries will be re-opened as places where more people can enjoy one another face-to-face or hug-to-hug, etc.
Needless to say, the side benefit of the above solution is that global disarmament will be in effect immediately at both the national and individual level and unconditional love will start to flourish beginning with all new born. The natural dignity inherent in treating everyone as equal is reclaimed by every living human being. A world will indeed be born anew as long as we don't deny that absolute power corrupts absolutely, as Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, etc. have demonstrated dictatorship and with Bush and Hollywood stars and private schools, etc. demonstrating nepotism and most of us not doing anything when dearest Jimmy declared from his heart in his Nobel speech:
`I decided that the most serious and universal problem is the growing chasm between the richest and poorest people on earth'.
not worth the price.......2004-09-30
The writer says he is enlightened. Is he sane? I don't know. I don't want to ask him whether he is enlightened or not. Because when I ask so, he will answer me he is enlightened because he realized that there is nothing to "realize." So, I don't need another teacher who want me to surrender before him. Dalai-lama said "spy on your spiritual teacher before you surrender yourself before him." Dalai-lama himself never says he is enlightened. But we know lama himself is a very trustworthy teacher for humankind. Be careful, people. I'm from the same country where this writer came from.
commercial for brain respiration.......2004-07-21
This book has a bit too much self-promotion for me. Over and over and over and over and over again the author claims that through his program 'Brain Respiration' one may become truly enlightened. His message is encouraging and I like that he says enlightenment is nothing if it doesn't help somebody else. However... this book is simply laced with too many references to his 'Brain Respiration'. If I wanted to read a book on Brain Respiration I would have bought it. Now I won't thanks to this author's rampant self-promotion. This book seems to be merely a lengthy advertisement.
Healing Society.......2002-07-15
Dr. Seung Heun Lee wrote Healing Society: A Prescription for Global Enlightenment because he wanted "to call upon the world to embark on an Enlightenment Revolution" and "to let everyone know of their own right to enlightenment." Dr. Lee has written sixteen previous books and lectures extensively. He also founded "Dahn Hak Movement," which is designed to help in spiritual awakening, and helped establish the New Millennium Peace Foundation with Neale Donald Walsch. The United Nations has recognized Dr. Lee as a preeminent spiritual leader of the world.
He emphasizes throughout the book that enlightenment is not just for a select few, but available to everyone. He defines enlightenment as "a simple choice that you make to live your life for the betterment and benefit of all those around you." One needs only to make that choice, and then develop the discipline to live out that choice.
Part of becoming enlightened involves training your life energy, or Ki. Dr. Lee explains exactly how to do this. He has also developed a technique called "Brain Respiration" as a "realistic and everyday form of spiritual training" for all those people who don't have the time or inclination to go live on a mountain top or join a monastery.
Once people achieve personal enlightenment, the next step is global enlightenment. Dr. Lee says that we once all lived together as enlightened beings in harmony, and that we have deep spiritual longings to regain this world. In order to do that, "we need to recover the sense of Oneness and harmony that we have lost." That requires making both a personal and a collective choice to be enlightened. He wants at least one hundred million people to be spiritually enlightened by the end of this decade. "The healing vibration of their choices and determination will cure the Earth of the ills we have caused," he says.
Most people have forgotten that we are all part of One. Forgetting that has led to the state of affairs that exists today. If you'd like to meet your Creator Within and become a part of the solution rather than continue as part of the problem, then I highly recommend reading Healing Society.
How to strengthen our spiritual bodies.......2001-05-23
The great prophets and holy men in all of the major religious traditions have conveyed the insight that all men and women are "One". The eastern traditions note that this phenomena is reflected by the energy called "Ki" and is the common bond directly connecting body, mind and spirit. In Healing Society: A Prescription For Global Enlightenment, Seung Heun Lee reveals how we can draw upon this energy to strengthen our spiritual bodies, actually experience a direct connection to ultimate oneness down to the center of our very being. Seung Heun Lee clearly explains how this "noble enlightenment" is meant for everyone, and that by getting into contact with this sense of oneness men and women can illuminate the world and secure their children's future in a transformed world. Healing Society is a very highly recommended addition to Eastern tradition, spirituality, metaphysics, and self-help reading lists and reference collections.

great cookbook with accurate recipes.......2002-01-23
Coming from generations of Islanders, I have grown up with many of the recipes that are in here. They are quite accurate in detailing culinary life on the Island. The recipes are fairly easy for those with any success in the kitchen and allow everyone to get a glimpse of our food. The Portuguese section also contains some of the recipes that are so popular in our Holy Ghost celebration. For any natives, tourists, or just lovers of our beautiful island, this cookbook is a must!

A gem!.......2004-01-08
This outstanding book brings the Beinecke Library to those who have not seen its splendid building and collections, and will serve as a reference to those who know it well. The curators' articles are entry points not only to the Beinecke's treasures but also to the talents and scholarship of the curators themselves. The book benefits from the sensitive editing of Stephen Parks and the handsome and imaginative photographs of Richard Cheek.

Paper Quilling for the First Time.......2007-07-03
Being new to quilling, I found the instructions contained in this book to be very clear and the colored illustrations were most helpful. The illustrations also gave me ideas which go beyond merely making flowers, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the age old art of quilling. Fran - Brooklyn, Michigan
Paper Quilling.......2007-03-17
This book is the absolute best book I have found for paper quilling. I am extremely happy that I purchased it!!!!
Great for beginners.......2007-03-09
This is just what I was looking for. It's like having a personal tutor.
Paper Quilling For The First Time. .......2007-01-12
First off I will say that being a beginner quiller, I find this book easy to follow and has explicit instructions. I am, however, disappointed that the cover shown for the book was NOT the same cover of the book I received. I was under the impression that the cover shown of the book with the hydrangea pictured was the actual cover and that is not so. There are no instructions for this design at all. That is one of the main reasons I had bought the book because of this design. If I had seen it on the shelf, I would not have bought the book at all.
In fairness I have to say that I had looked at this same book on several other sites and they have the same hydrangea cover pictured also.
I am disappointed that this particular design was not included in the book. I find this to be misleading and the actual cover of the book should be shown not the one above.
Quilling for the first time.......2007-01-06
I did find this book interesting but for people quilling for the first time I think it is a little hard. I plan to try some of the projects in the book this year.

Book Description
An updated version of the first full biography of R.E.M. Tony Fletcher follows their story from its humble origins in Athens, Georgia, to their current status as a leading world-wide act, all the while placing the allure of their appeal in the context of its time and place. Meticulously researched and drawing on dozens of interviews with friends, associates and the band members themselves, Remarks is not just the story of one group's rise through cult status, but the story of American rock in the 1980's. This new edition of Tony Fletcher's acclaimed R.E.M. biography brings the band's story right up to date, covering the departure of drummer Bill Berry, Michael Stipe's increasing role as a spokesman for humane causes, and the group's music right up to their Reveal album, regarded by many critics as their best ever. Fully illustrated and including a comprehensive discography.
Customer Reviews:
Just like what a band biography should be..........2002-03-07
I've only recently become a fan of REM and I picked up this book to read about the band's origins and early history. Fletcher did a great job with describing the early music scene in Georgia and detailing the birth of REM. He never asked you to learn too many details and tidbits about the comprehensive world of music and never went too deep into the motivations of the songwriting. But the band does give input here and there and the rise and success of the band is very well-documented. I'd like to read Fletcher's take on the 2nd decade of REM. He did that good of a job in this book.
FANTASTIC!.......1999-02-20
Being an REM fan for over a decade, this was the first book of their's that I had ever purchased... this book is chock full of information about the band, and it has some great pictures! If you are into the history of REM... this is a MUST!
Objective views from an obsessive?.......1997-11-03
This was my first REM book and I read it with a vengeance. Back when Automatic had only just come out, I had only just completed my REM music collection and was absolutely into them. At that time they were basically the only group I was into but all I knew was what I could gather from the songs and from those clippings in 'Best Of'. I soon knew every line of those clippings and decided to sought out the book they came from. BANG. I was hooked - completely - every line, every page I wanted to read so much. Packed with information I took up like a sponge with water - I seriously couldn't put in down.
The book is written in short paragraphs wildly spaced over glossy pages, with some great photos and an useful comprehensive list of the standard releases. It's very easy to read - the short paragraphs keeping you interested chapter after chapter. The book's ideal as a starter for REM information and for people who have a more casual interest, rather than heavier, more indepth books such as 'It crawled From The South'. The faults lie in its generalisations and the way it plays up to the fans, giving us what we want - "hey this book's wonderful - it says REM are great". Its so easy for music books to do that and REMarks is no exception. Sometimes Fletcher does sound artificial, but then again, I still read it over and over.
Never loan out your precious books........1997-08-29
I loaned REMarks to a "friend". This friend probably never looked at the book, but threw it
on the back seat floor/beater -- junked the car with my book still in there. Of all the not-so-nice things this person did, this one sticks in my craw the most... I had my nose in this book all the time... A MUST
