Book Description
Catharine Williams (1787-1872) lived most of her life in Rhode Island, where she supported herself and her daughter by a productive literary career. Her most compelling work, Fall River, last published in 1833, recreates a notorious incident in the ill-fated town of Fall River, Massachusetts: the trial of a Methodist minister for the murder of a pregnant mill worker whom it was suspected he had seduced. Williams's investigative report offers a vivid contemporary view of the lives of poor "factory girls" and of clerical corruption in the industrial towns of early New England. While based in fact, the book raises themes of sexual and religious hypocrisy and exploitation that may be compared with those of novels like The Coquette, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and The Scarlet Letter. At the same time, the author's mixture of journalism, biography, fiction, and exhortation makes this "authentic narrative" an unusual challenge to traditional notions of literary form and yields fresh insights into the nature of early American women's writing.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing true story from history that could be today's news........1998-10-20
I had the very good fortune to read this book when it was in Galleys, and it is wonderful. It's one of the earliest books written in the USA, and was written by a woman. Set in Fall River, Massachussetts in the 18th century, it tells the tale of a young girl who is seduced, impregnated, and then abandoned and defamed by an scoundrel of a minister. What was truely striking (apart from the quality of the writing), was how little things had changed in the intervening period. As I was reading the galleys, a very similar case was being tried in the same area. Well worth reading, not only for its style, but also for its content, and for its depiction of life in New England in that time.

Ever notice that the boundary between the supernatural and mundane worlds is very thin in eastern Canada? Tanya Huff made Toronto a vampire territory and hotbed of evil eruptions (Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt). Now she moves to Kingston, Ontario, for Summon the Keeper.
Claire Hansen, the Keeper, is summoned to the Elysian Fields Guest House to reseal a hole in the basement, which is literally an opening to Hell. The owner and monitor of the site disappears, leaving Claire stuck managing the place until the problem is solved. Her new employee, Dean McIssac, is a gorgeous Newfie who cooks, cleans, and lives the Boy Scout oath. Then there's Jacques Labaet: very French Canadian, very sexy, very dead. Jacques is a ghost who wants to be the man in Claire's life. Oh yeah, and there's Austin, a talking cat with attitude: "I barely know you, but I'm assuming you're human. I'm not saying this is a good thing, it's just the way it is."
Huff keeps the plot moving and the quips coming to the very end. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series will find this novel light but refreshing. --Nona Vero

Customer Reviews:
Should be 4 1/2 stars.......2007-09-18
Tanya Huff's Summon the Keeper didn't disappoint. Claire is a Keeper, a race of beings that keep the balance between good and evil. She's been summoned to a rat trap of a bed and breakfast. She thinks she'll patch up the hole and be on her way, but things don't quite work out as she planned. Her plans are further complicated with the hotel's employee, and young hot male, and the sexy resident ghost.
The characters are fully realized, even the talking cat. The only unbelieveable bit is having a male around that will cook and clean without complaint. Where can I find one of those?
An original, intelligent departure from genre formulas.......2007-09-14
Tanya Huff is one of the best writers of humerous genre fiction there is, and the Keeper Chronices is her best series. For those who never quite got into writers like Piers Anthony or Terry Pratchett but want to read something with a lot of humor, Summon the Keeper could be a great alternative. The humor is always derived from the plot and doesn't exist just to be funny, which is a problem I've had with Piers Anthony's Xanth novels--there's no listing of pun after pun after pun for five paragraphs before the plot comes back.
Clair is more of a modern hero than a traditional huggs and fuzzy bunnies hero. She's grouchy and at times insufferable, but I argue that the same could be said for many of the most beloved characters in the history of books and film, and especially in science fiction and fantasy. From classics like Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination to space fantasy like Star Wars, fans have always been drawn to characters with flaws and depth.
Summon the Keeper also never disapoints readers with the two stereotypes so common to the fantasy genre, where either A) the 'strong female' eventually falls to pieces and needs the male character to 'save' her, or B)the female is a man-hating vixen who fights in miniskirts and high heels. Clair remains the hero and the strongest character throughout, and never once is it implied that her uterus makes her less of a brave, intelligent character than her male counterparts--and she manages rather well in jeans and sensible shoes.
Don't give up too soon .........2007-09-10
If you feel at all inclined to give up on this book at first, be forewarned, "Summon The Keeper" starts slowly, and it feels early on that nothing much is happening, but hang in there to around about page 90 at least, because with the introduction of the character Jacques, things get a lot more interesting and build nicely from there.
I initially bought the book for the kitty, but wound up liking it a lot........2007-07-09
Okay, you should NEVER judge a book by its cover, right? The goofy title was a bit of a turn off but there was this kitty...well, the kitty in the book looked a lot like my kitty from childhood and I had some time to kill so why not? I wound up loving this book. I love the characters. I love the idea of the Keepers. I love the family dynamics. I love that the Keepers don't drive. I love the banter.
If you're looking for some well-written, charming, escapist fantasy, this is a perfect book. Read it on the beach. Read it in the airport. I don't recommend trying to pull this one over on your Literature teacher though, she may get cranky.
I've read the three books in the series and they're scads of fun. I can't seem to locate a fourth one so I'm assuming that its in the works, or at least I hope so.
A fun little book driven by its humor........2007-06-08
I got this book cheaply at a secondhand bookstore on one of those hit-and-miss, "I've never heard of this but I'm going to try it." whims, where you usually either find something completely worthless or something niche and amazing (and more often than not the former). This book is far from worthless, though it doesn't manage to be amazing either. It's a good book to carry around for moments of utter boredom, like in the doctor's office's waiting room.
What really made me want to keep reading this book was the humor and the likable characters. At least, I liked them. True, their extreme one-direction personalities got on my nerves every so often (Claire is cranky, Dean is painfully pure, and Jacques only thinks about one thing; Austin is also a know-it-all, but his "cat-ness" is so perfectly portrayed that I think for anyone who has a cat this will not get annoying), but usually this is used with humorous intent.
The plot isn't all that great, but it's decent. I won't go into it because Amazon has a basic summary and the basic summary is all you can really give without having to explain a whole heck of a lot. I will say that, to me, the plot events run in a very episodic manner. I can't help thinking how much more enjoyable it would be if it were a TV series. I hold absolutely no hope for that, but it's fun to think of what might have been.
My biggest complaint is all the typos in this book. A fair amount of typos in a published book that I can easily spot tend to get on my nerves. It also would have been nice if some of the minor characters were a little more significant to the plotline rather than just an excuse to throw some more paranormal stuff in. There was a funny twist at the end with some of the minor characters I really wasn't expecting would be important, though.
I wouldn't suggest this book to anyone who wants to spend their valued reading time on fine works of literature. If you can't stand humor of a cheesy sort, you'll kick yourself for ever trying to read this. However, if you enjoy that kind of thing, and if you (like me) plow through books simply because they are books and don't mind something a little mediocre now and then, this book might be worth a read. Plus, it's pretty darn cheap used.

Customer Reviews:
And we are off to yet another planet........2005-07-13
I'm going to skip the plot synopsis, because you can read it elsewhere. What I will say is that by the third book in this series the format seems to get a bit repeatative. Sparta, a.k.a. Ellen Troy, works for the Board of Space Control and is sent to yet another planet/satellite to solve yet another crime that, while on the surface may seem unrelated, are actually connected by a secret group of people who are also connected to her biological enhancements. She's been to Venus and the Moon and now she visits Mars. I'm beginning to think Preuss is simply attempting a tour of the solar system.
Preuss' writing still seems to hold up throughout the book and I was still eager to find out how this one wrapped up. However, the overall mystery of the series is being drawn out a little too much. I think this could have been wrapped up nicely in three rather than six books.
I wish I could meet Sparta.......2005-01-05
Personally I enjoyed the story (not to mention that I became in love with Sparta since the first pages), you should not expect Clarke's style even in the pages where his stories are described, it's another author (and i think a good one). Perhaps a litlle barroque when describes environments but very, very pleasant.
Clarke's view of Mars through the eyes of Paul Preuss.......2002-07-05
I first read this series when it came out in the late 1980's. They are highly entertaining and among my favorite books, it is high time they got a second printing. This third installment which takes us to Mars is as enjoyable as the rest, though my favorite is the second installment, "Maelstrom".
Over the years I've had a lot of fun with Sparta and "The Free Spirit". I just wish I knew how to get my hands on one of those "Snark" attack helicopters. Ellen Troy and Blake Redfield are captivating heros, who like the rest of us, have their flaws. Any Clarke faithful who doesn't enjoy this series might want to think about going one size larger the next time they buy new skivvies.
Anyone who enjoys this and other "Venus Prime" novels should look for "Core", another enjoyable work by Preuss. (For anyone who's curious, the origional names for the Venus Prime books are "The Breaking Strain", "Maelstrom", "Hide and Seek", "The Medusa Encounter", "The Diamond Moon", and "The Shining Ones" respectively.)
Your right it's not Clark it's Preuss.......2000-06-13
I don't think Paul Preuss is attemting to take Clark's place in science fiction history. The three installments thus far of Venus Prime are clever and enjoyable mysteries. The books are well written (if not carefully edited - Clark's intro in the second book refers to the first manned orbit of the moon by Apollo 8 Christmas 1969 - AFTER the first moon landing) and fun to read. Enjoy them for what they are, and leave the comparisons to 2001 out of the experience.
sustained energetic preuss.......2000-06-12
preuss captures clarke's tone and complexity--a nice entry in a superior series

Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful for the Divorcing Woman!.......2006-11-10
By the end of the book, I felt like I was one of the gang with Michelle, Connie, Rosalind and Carla. These women tell it like it is, with a sense of humor so desperately needed in a time of trouble and pain. Some of the sharing is so hilarious that I found myself nodding my head and wiping my eyes, from laughing so hard.
Being a Christian woman myself, I was unsure how to treat my soon to be ex-husband, what to do with the confused, sad and angry feelings that I felt after being "dumped" after 17 years. I also didn't know what to do with the new girlfriend. I found answers in this book. Perhaps the biggest enlightenment was the fact that the ex didn't walk away free and easy, that his conscience will trouble him from now on and that how he deals with his leaving our family is between him and God, and no longer my problem!
Amazingly, after identifying with these women and no longer feeling alone, I was able to process my feelings and move to forgiveness and even a bit of pity. (The girlfriend dumped him shortly after that - which did help.) I am employed after years of being a stay-at-home Mom, closer to God than I have been in a long time and feeling positive and free. Sometimes it takes time away to recognize the cloud you have lived under for years and that life is truly full of joy. This book helped turn my head around!
My personal experience is that now my ex wants to stop the divorce and reunite the family. I have had a clear message from the Holy Spirit that I am NOT to do this - at least at this time. (It would just continue to be more of the same thing.) So, from fighting the divorce initially, I am now the one who desires freedom and who allows Jesus to be my husband. I am no longer alone.
I would highly recommend this book.
Finally a book that spoke to me!.......2006-08-05
As I struggled to live through a divorce that I did not want I tried to find books that would comfort me and make me feel like I was not alone. This book did just that. It is a wonderful read and brings hope when you feel all hope is lost. I would recommend this to any woman who is going through a divorce, especially one that they do not want. These four women made me feel that I can survive this and one day learn to live, laugh and love again.
Live, Laugh, Love Again.......2006-07-10
Excellent book for any woman who's going through a divorce or is recently divorced! Easy read ~ would highly recommend it!
Encouragment for the Soul.......2006-05-05
Through laughing and tears, this book spoke to my soul. For the first time in two years, I am encouraged that I will Live, Laugh, and Love Again. These women put a healing balm on my outlook. It's a must for the divorced -- at every stage of the struggle.
This is a great book.......2006-04-05
I just LOVED reading this book. Most books I found on divorce and unfaithfulness were all about working through and keeping the marriage intact. When my husband had no desire for that to happen, I only felt like more of a failure because I couldn't even make that happen. This book deals with four women whose marriages did not make it and ended with divorce. They share honestly and openly and sometime humorously about each of their lives. It was helpful to know that all the things my husband said to me and how he acted were also occurring in other womens lives. I didn't feel as bad knowing that I wasn't the only one who had my husband say those hurtful things to me.....there's a whole bunch of other men out there who came up with the same excuses and hurtful lies to put the blame all on their wives. And the biggest bonus of all, is they ALL relied on God to get them through this situation. This book was very, very well worth it!

Book Description
The Thai Royal Gifts described and illustrated in this volume are deeply symbolic of the long and evolving friendship between Thailand and the United States of America. This beautifully illustrated book documents for the first time a group of artifacts whose meaning and significance have, until now, been inadequately understood by scholars, and sometimes even misunderstood by the recipients of the gifts themselves -- the presidents and people of the United States. Yet for both Thais and Americans these gifts are truly historic, artistic and scientific treasures, through which the Kings of Thailand represented their nation, and its alliances with America through time. 'Treasures of Two Nations' will interest art, social and diplomatic historians; anthropologists, linguists and ethnomusicologists; students of Thai theater and culture, and all those will appreciate the aesthetic quality of the gift objects or the stories those objects were meant to tell.

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular collection of award-winning cover art.......2002-03-03
I first fell in love with the art of Wendell Minor while I was reading books by the children's nature writer Jean Craighead George. Spectacular watercolor art added a new dimension to Ms. George's stories about the Arctic (like ARCTIC SON and SNOW BEAR), the Everglades (EVERGLADES), great horned owls (THE MOON OF THE OWLS), and wildlife throughout the country (MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT). In each new book that I read, the colors were rich and the illustrations accurately portrayed the worlds which the author was describing. Then, as I came to recognize Minor's distinct, one-of-a-kind type of art, his work suddenly began to show up everywhere, in innumberable picture books and emblazoned on book covers. Now many of the book jackets in the bookstores and libraries don't seem as if they're scattered around in disorginization, out of view because the spines are facing outward on the shelves, or hard to find because the book might have gone out-of-print. That's because, to my relief and delight, there's a whole book of Wendell Minor's book jackets that have been compiled over the past twenty-five years. ART FOR THE WRITTEN WORD contains more than 100 of Minor's astounding watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings. His distinguished work has appeared on a wide range of novels--fiction, nonfiction, biographies, thrillers, humor, cookbooks, natural history--many of them well-known stories by some bestselling authors. The artwork is reproduced in full-color on the oversized pages. There are pictures of famous people, houses, landscapes, wildlife, midwestern farms, towns, cities, wide open skies, automobiles, and scenes from the stories behind the covers. All of them are carefully rendered, detailed and thoughtful. You can look at a painting many times and each time notice something new. Along with the gallery of artwork, there's plenty of commentary from the people who wrote the stories that lie between the covers. Most of the authors' comments are filled with admiration and gratitude that the literature they spent so much time creating wasn't marred by an ugly or false jacket illustration. Some of the authors whose book covers are featured include David McCullough (who writes an excellent introduction), Ray Bradbury, Harper Lee, Garrison Keillor, Sherman Alexie, Mildred D. Taylor, Eve Bunting, Mary Higgins Clark, Pat Conroy, Toni Morrison, Patricia MacLachlan, Martin Cruz Smith, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, and countless others. They all basically agree that they were proud and thankful that Wendell Minor did the covers for their books; he read the stories and researched his topics before making the illustrations and contributed to the success of their books. Many of them have added his jacket art to their private collections, sworn never to discard a Wendell Minor book jacket, and shown off their "most prized possessions" to friends and family. Some comments are just gushing with elation, like two letters, placed 17 years apart, from John Jerome, who was obviously delighted that Minor so accurately depicted the blue pick-up truck for his book TRUCK. Garrison Keillor lends his kind of "Prairie Home Companion" lightness to his story of the covers for his books WE ARE STILL MARRIED and WLT: A RADIO ROMANCE. Some illustrations--like the ones for Nancy Price's SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY and C.J. Koch's THE DOUBLEMAN--seem to have almost subliminal meanings. WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? and Brooks Stanwood's THE SEVENTH CHILD are quite frightening, while W.P. Kinsella's THE DIXON CORNBELT LEAGUE and Bill Bryson's THE LOST CONTINENT are breezy and pleasant. The varieties are endless; for example, the illustration for Timothy Findley's HEADHUNTER is completely different from Jim Shepard's PAPER DOLL. But, in my opinion, the illustrations that really stand out are the landscapes, which Minor always embraces in his picture books and in the book covers for Laura Kalpakian's THESE LATTER DAYS, THE PRINCE OF TIDES, and countless others. You can tell just by looking at any one of his big skies, rolling ocean, or blue mountain pictures that Wendell Minor is someone who has a passion for America's great lands, from Alaska to Florida. In each painting you feel like you're there, either watching a mockingbird fly from a tree, as a sliver of moon rises, like you're hearing the cicadas buzzing on a hot southern night, as in Harper Lee's classic TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Or you're racing through the woods on a snowy winter night with a red fox, as in Eve Bunting's children's book RED FOX RUNNING. And if you're not there, you'll certainly want to be. It's a wonderful feeling to look at a painting like that that is so real, so familiar, so close. In the end, the only wrong thing I can see in this book is that there is not another one like it; there are dozens of book covers that weren't included in this collection, and there are still more coming out every month it seems! Still, as I've said earlier, part of the excitement of seeing a Wendell Minor cover is the surprise and the immediate recognization of his unique style when you're browsing through a bookstore or a library. It is my hope that someday I might write a book with a Wendell Minor cover to enliven its face.
