Book Description
On the heels of the paperback publication of Robb Forman Dew's long-awaited new novel, The Evidence Against Her (see page 41), Back Bay Books takes pleasure in restoring to print her critically acclaimed follow-up to her National Book Award-winning first novel, Dale Loves Sophie to Death.
Customer Reviews:
A son's last summer at home is detailed with charm and humor.......1997-01-03
Dew's story of a son's last summer before entering Harvard
University is charmingly detailed by a master storyteller.
It speaks of a mother's devotion and care for a son who must
inevitably separate from her. This is a book every mother
of a son should read before he leaves for school. Indeed,
the main character is fortunate to have a mother such as
Dew describes.
Book Description
From the national bestselling author of The Samaria Trilogy...this is the novel that launched Sharon Shinn's career and inspired Peter S. Beagle to call her "the most original writer of fantasy since Robin McKinley."
Aubrey was a student of the fine art of wizardry. But the more knowledge he acquired, the more he wanted to learn. He traveled in search of the greatest master of all, the gifted shape-changer Glyrenden. From him, Aubrey expected to discover the secret of long-lost spells and the mysteries of arcane magic.
But there was one discovery he never expected, a mystery he risked every thing to solve. Her name was Lilith...

Trading Places.......2007-10-03
I'm not a big reader of fantasy books, but I'm thrilled to have discovered this wonderfully poignant tale of fate, love, redemption, loss, and sorcery. Sharon Shinn received the William Crawford Award for Achievement in Fantasy for THE SHAPE-CHANGER'S WIFE, a tale of two wizards: Aubrey -- a student of the magical arts -- and Glyrenden -- an all powerful shape-changer. Aubrey is sent to learn the greatest secret -- the ability to manipulate shapes -- but little does he know that he'll come away learning not only this elusive bit of magic but he'll also find life's truly greatest secret: to find love.
I'm hesitant to give anything further away because this is the kind of novel that's easily spoiled. It's hard to see this tale as a fantasy novel -- as I've said, I've not read much of that genre -- because it's essentially a love story wrapped up in a world of fantasy ... mostly meaning wizards, kings, sorcery, etc. At a glance, the casual reader might dismiss WIFE as a genre splash and pick up something else; all I can say is that one truly great and inspirational read will be missed.
Also to the tale's benefit is the fact that it's a brisk read; these 200+ pages whisk by -- much like many of life's lesser affairs of the heart -- and it's easy to stay as captivated as the young wizard is with newfound love.
Simple and Lovely.......2006-08-30
This was a very simple, lovely tale and a quick read as well. The author Sharon Shinn, has an elegant way with her prose, but I do have some complaints to make. First off, this is obviously a first work, the characters are not very well fleshed out and the love story makes no sense at first. Its just as if BOOM! the protagonist falls in love, with no real explanation as to how or why. Secondly, I could see the climax coming from a mile away, in fact I could see all the main reveals in the tale. Perhaps that is because I have read too much fantasy fiction over the years, my mind starts working like a fantasy fan.
However, all that aside, I really did like this book, it was a quick read and did not bog me down in mundane, tiring details. I look forward to reading some of Shinns' other novels.
A haunting look at humanity.......2006-07-08
The Shape-Changer's Wife by Sharon Shinn
Primarily for: Adults
When the young apprentice Aubrey wants to learn transmogrification, his master sends him to the shape-changer Glyrenden. But Glyrenden is not home; his wife Lilith allows Aubrey to stay. Lilith displays no love for her husband nor her surroundings, yet will not leave. Intrigued, Aubrey examines the household more closely when the shape-changer returns--the charming yet mercurial Glyrenden, his gruff and scuttling servants--and discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all Lilith.
The Shape-Changer's Wife explores themes discussed in Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion--what if someone had the power to create or transform another human being? What makes us human? And it echoes the struggles with power explored in Patricia McKillip's the Forgotten Beasts of Eld: what is the difference between knowledge and power? What is an acceptable use of power? But its suffusion of magic and layers of illusion are peculiarly her own, as are the characters we recognize beneath them.
A little mystery with a dash of fantasy.......2005-09-08
I have read everything Sharon Shinn has written. In some cases twice. I was dying to get a hold of her first novel, The Shape-Changer's Wife. How could I pass it up? The hero is a young apprentice wizard who is sent by his mentor to study with the powerful wizard, Glyrenden. Lilith is his wife. A mystery all her own. Aubrey is determined to figure out who she is...or more to the point...what she is. If you enjoy this book, this is a great jumping off point for any of Sharon's other books. I love her imaginative way describing her characters. You get a real sense of who they are and connect with them. I am glad I discovered Sharon Shinn quite by accident.
Delightful Tale.......2005-06-17
The young magician Aubrey has learned almost all he can from his mentor Cyril, so he is sent to apprentice with the powerful shape-changer Glynrenden. He is warned to be wary of the wizard, and soon notices that the situation is far from normal at Glynrenden's home in the woods. Most strange of all is the mage's disturbing and bewitching wife, Lilith, who watches everything impassively with her luminous green eyes.
Aubrey learns lessons of love and hate, right and wrong, on top of the art of shape-changing during his time as Glynrenden's apprentice. A deftly woven tale, reminiscent of the fairy tales I loved as a child, full of nature and morals. Of course, the reader figures out the truth about Lilith long before Aubrey, but this did nothing to detract from my enjoyment of the story.
I am in love with Sharon Shinn's writing, but this book is not for you if you like a story with more action and whiz-bang.

A review on When the Sleeper Wakes.......2005-02-24
H.G. Wells was a historian, journalist, and sociologist as well as being a novelist. In his story When the Sleeper Wakes all of his interests are combined in the telling of the Sleeper's story, the story of a man who fell asleep in the nineteenth century and woke up in the year 2100 to find that he owns half of the world. This book that walks the edges of science fiction and science fact shows a futuristic society that, for all of its technological advances, has not much improved.
When the Sleeper Wakes is an interesting read as long as you have the patience for the way it is worded. The twists and turns it takes you on to describe an equally messy world will drive you to see if the tangle resolves itself. Just this story is quite worth the whole book.
Terrific Book from the Originator of Sci-Fi.......2002-06-21
This book contains three terrific novels in which Wells showcases his predictions for the future. The novels are presented in the chronological order for Well's Predictions. When the Sleeper Awakes takes place in the year 2100. A Story of Days to come is in 2103 and 2104. The Time Machine is in the 800,000's and beyond. All three novels predict a grim and dark future beset by class struggle. Wells believes that the future will be a time where the capitalists dominate over the laborers of society. The Capitalists will own all of the material and intellectual property in the world, and they will subject the masses to a life of degradation and servile labor. The wealthy will build massive glass cities where they will live a life of privilege and ease, while the vast majority will live in abject poverty underneath these cities. Wells is a tremendous storywriter that makes it hard to put this book down. I highly recommend this to any fan of science fiction.
A Mind's Eye Into the Future of Mankind.......2000-10-26
This is a marvelous collection that takes the reader through three science fantasy works arranged in a chronological order as to the subjects of the novels. Each possess Wells' marvelous ability to send the reader ahead in time to what might become of our future generations. When the Sleeper Wakes unfolds as a visually stunning, action-packed and thought-provoking page turner. A Story of Days to Come focuses on the hazards that may be found in a loving relationship if the future were to further segregate the classes found in Wells' day. This collection also boasts the first complete publication of Wells' classic The Time Machine. If you've read The Time Machine and are not familiar with "the kangaroo rat people" then you will need to go back and read the whole story as Wells originally envisioned it. This collection was worth every penny I spent on it.

Absolutely an essential tool .......2006-07-06
This is a must have in order to study the original Hebrew. If you know how to use it correctly, you can really get the picture of what the original is saying, rather than the grainy, black and white faxed copy of the masterpiece that is the English translation.
Gesenius - Out of Date & Touch.......2000-01-07
This book was one I used in Seminary back in 1962-65. It makes no use of any recent discoveries and any of the Urgaritic findings. You'll do much better finding something more up to date.
For Spinoza Fans........1999-03-26
Many Spinozistic insights are embedded in Biblical Hebrew words.
Strong's coding numbers allows the Bible student wihout a knowledge of Hebrew to use this classic work to find the precise meaning and connotations of the Hebrew or Aramaic word behind the English word being studied. Being a lexicon, its entries are more exhaustive than those in Strong's Concordance.
Vital scripture study resource. Don't need to know Hebrew........1998-10-22
Why a lexicon? "In the beginning was the WORD." Word usage is enormously helpful to Biblical understanding. H.W.F. Gesenius (mid 1800's) is acclaimed as the Noah Webster of Old Testament Hebrew lexicons (dictionary). He brings to the Old Testament a wonderful blend of Christian/Jewish background and insight. Be sure to note not only the word you are looking up, but also the words that surround it, for they too often lend very interesting and even uncanny insight (divine providence). See also Spiros Zodhiates' "The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament." e.g. Word 2000 in Zod.: "dangerous, near to falling." Word 2000 in Ges.: "utter destruction." Commentary on Y2K?
Required for Scholars and Laypersons alike!.......1998-10-13
Cut your eye teeth on this primary book for anyone wishing to study the Scriptures in Hebrew. Easily becomes your main Lexicon for research. Excellent for beginners and advanced students.

lofts made by humans for humans.......2005-12-02
the book contains photos and floor planas of several apartments made in converted industrial spaces. a couple of them were very inspiring for me and will help me to design my new house. the designs shown are modern but not too arty. theyt are quite human and pleasant.
this book is for people looking for inspiration if they are designing a big apartment/house with not quite regualar shape and with high ceiling. it is not only for ultra modern yuppies or artists. many interiors are made by families.
i like the book and will buy the other titles in this series.

Book Description
In 1948, the noted book designer and Purdue alumnus Bruce Rogers wrote a book that documented and illustrated his creation of the Centaur typeface. The book was privately printed by Rogers himself under the name of his studio, October House. This limited edition of the book was transferred to the Purdue Libraries at the time of his death along with his other papers and books. Over the years the remaining stock has found its home in the Special Collections of the Libraries. And although known as something of a collector's item by those who are aware of the few copies in circulation, it is here available to the general market for the first time. Centaur Types is a fascinating book for several reasons: in the designer's own words, we learn of the evolution of the typeface and of his interest in the art and craft of creating type; it demonstrates different and comparable typefaces, and gives examples of Centaur from six to seventy-two point; and lastly, it stands as a fitting example of fine book-making from one of the master book designers of his time.
