        Book Description

The original Ramayana—a classic tale of war between absolute Good and Evil—was written 3,000 years ago by Valmiki, a reformed thief-turned-sage. Now, with breathtaking imagination, Indian novelist Ashok K. Banker has recreated this epic tale for modern readers everywhere. Ayodhya the Unconquerable is the legendary capital of warriors and seers, and the greatest fortress of the civilized world. Soon it will be a wasteland of ashes and blood. For Ayodhya lies in the shadow of a demon's wrath—a demon that is sending all its dreadful power to ravage the world of mortals. And only Rama, Prince of Ayodhya, can hope to prevent the onslaught of darkness.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ THE INDIAN EDITIONS INSTEAD.......2007-07-10

If you are reading my Ramayana series, then I gently urge and request you to please not buy the UK or US editions, even if they're available at bargain prices. Which they probably are, since the publishers there have more or less put the books out of print, due to a lack of interest by non-Indian readers.

The Indian editions are the definitive editions of my work, containing a lengthy Introduction by me titled 'Retelling the Ramayana', which provides an essential perspective on the work, the final versions of all the books--including some small but significant changes, particularly in some book endings--no glossary, thank God, and are generally the best-edited, designed and published versions, in my opinion at least. In short, they're the Author's Preferred Edition, particularly the new hardcover omnibus editions, which represent the story in the way I had originally intended and are truly sumptuous to hold (and behold). Also, significantly, they aren't packaged as 'Fantasy' or 'SF' like the firang ones, which is a ridiculously transparent attempt at cashing in on the commercial success of the fantasy genre a la LoTR and Harry Potter. Please, people, my Ramayana series is a retelling of an epic, and that's exactly what it should be called, 'Epic'. I'd venture to call it 'Itihasa', but even Mythology, which is the label Penguin uses for the books here in India, is acceptable. But certainly not Fantasy as in one of the ubiquitous Tolkien rip-offs that are churned out in droves by western publishers, or even SF, both genres that can sometimes be wonderful in their own right, but are totally inappropriate in the context of an epic that pre-dates Tolkien by some thousands of years, and the entire tradition of western literature as well!

Frankly, I feel so strongly about this that I'd even go so far as to say, if you can't get the Indian editions, then don't read the books! That's why I'm currently in the process of re-acquiring the rights to the US and UK editions and they will soon be out of print everywhere but India. Which is how it ought to be: this is a quintessentially Indian story, written by a contemporary Indian for other contemporary Indians to read. And the Indian editions are really the only way to go.

I've tried to read the Ramayana, but the versions I found were in heavy, tedious language which bored me to death.

This version, however, was completely different! Well written and beautifully detailed, it was great fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars The best Ramayana adaptation to date!.......2006-05-24

Ashok Banker, I am your fan! You astonish me with your literary skill and your ability to describe things so realistically that we feel as if we are watching a film. The characters in this novel are fleshed-out and so easy to relate to that you feel as if you get to know them. An amazing endeavor, Mr. Banker, that has succeeded impeccably! Keep writing, Mr. Banker! I have read five of the Ramayana books so far (up to Bridge of Rama, no.5), and I am totally enraptured! Can't wait for number six! For those of you who have not yet read this series, do so now!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story told by a master story teller........2006-03-26

This book is a wonderful book. I first got this book from a friend who recommended it as a good read. I, being an American Baptist, had no idea that this story was actually a retelling of a great Indian Epic, full of bramin magic, horrible beast, proud Armies, and a great hero.

Because of this wonderful book I have learned a great deal about a culture that I would probably not even really take the time to research.

As for the actual story. It was an amazing story once you get past all of the Indian words that are used. Once you begin reading it is kind of slow in the first few chapters but once the story gets going you'll be amazed.

I can't wait to finish reading this entire series and I look forward to the completion of the 6th and final book.
I strongly recommed this book to anyone interested in a good read. Expecially to those who are not Indian as this book will open your eyes to different cultures and send you back begging for more.

5 out of 5 stars The intrigue commences..........2006-02-15

Prince of Ayodhya: Book 1 of a retelling of the Ramaayana - in just that I can see most people forming a bias as to why they should not pick it up. But no matter what your bias is, this is a must buy!

The author through his fluid narrative clearly proves to you that the core of this great epic is constant, eternal, alive... He has infused subtle depths to each character and draws each and every reader into the world of this Ramaayana. Truly it is his Ramaayana as each of the various versions have been truly works of their respective authors. It seems to me that he has taken their blessing and their wisdom, but reinvented the story as it is revealed to him.

This series will be appreciated by readers who are aware of the Ramaayana or have read prior versions as much as new readers who are introduced to the rich fabric of Indian mythology.

It is a credit to the writer that he has set the stage, and created plots so intriguing that even someone like me who knows how the events in the Raamayana proceed finds them keeping me guessing "What next?".

I am writing this review after having read the sequel, "Witness of Gor". The sequel actually revives for me the story line that seems to peter out in "Magicians of Gor". The previous novels all lead up to this one, the tragic suborning of the greatest city on Gor--"glorious Ar"--by the treacherous opponents of Marlenus of Ar, in collusion with the forces of the island nations, Tyros and Cos. Thus, one is expecting something of an epic conclusion. Only one does not get it. The story drags through the sordid occupation of the once great city by her ancestral enemies. It details the treachery of Marlenus' cast-off daughter (and one-time free companion of Tarl Cabot) Talena, the rewriting of history by Tyros and Cos to depict the heroic defense of Ar's Port city-Ar's Station-by its garrison as cowardly and derelict, and the rejection of Ar's citizens of her own glorious heritage.

The only really bright points in this story are 1) the efforts of Cabot and another defender of Ar's Station to recover that city's home stone from its place of ignominy in Ar, where citizens spit upon it regularly, 2) Cabot's formation of "The Delta Brigade", a band of veterans of the disastrous Delta expedition as a resistance force, and 3) Cabot's determination to subjugate the treacherous Talena to his own masculine will once more-as an act of abduction and rape in reprisal for the contempt she had shown him earlier, when he lay paralyzed from the stroke of a poisoned weapon, and for her treason to her home stone and her father-Ar's greatest Ubar.

Yet even these three elements could barely save the book's virtues for me. Having been dragged breathlessly through every one of the previous 24 Gor novels, I found myself struggling, wading, and forcing myself through the final third of this one. Norman's naturalistic philosophy of male dominance and female submission became too much the center of the story, or the subject of wide-ranging discourses, even though, by this time, all of us devoteés of Norman's works are as fully apprised of this culture as we can be. And we have either bought into it or not. I was thus somewhat disappointed.

Still, ANY Gor book is better than none, and "Magicians of Gor" does paint a critical chapter in the history of Gor. Its sequel lets us know, moreover, that we may want to go back and reread this one, and tells us, finally, that the author has not abandoned the task of completing the series.

5 out of 5 stars A mighty conclusion to the chronicles!.......2000-04-23

With the capital city of Ar under the sway of the beautifultraitress Talena, a ruler placed in power by the Cosian invaders, TarlCabot and the Delta Brigade, the members of the underground force sworn to defeat Cos, must call upon the unique talents of master magician Boots Tarsk-Bit to recapture the precious Home Stone of vanquished Ar's Station. .... In MAGICIANS OF GOR, Tarl Cabot and his allies must work a unique magic with illusions and swordblades to root out the treachery at the heart of a mighty empire. Must read for Gorean enthusiasts!

I picked up this cookbook hoping to discover some recipes to make for my mother that would remind her of the cooking that she grew up with. I was not disappointed! There were several old favorites and many recipes that I could swear were family secrets. The Dandelion Salad with Bacon Dressing and Potato Filling recipes were very similar to what we make for special occasions, and the Apple Fritters, Hot Potato Salad, Coconut Cake, and the Ham, Green Beans, and Potatoes dishes reminded us of several other recipes we had not made in a long time. Listed by food type in an easy-to-follow format, the only thing missing in this book was a beautiful picture of each of the recipes. If you enjoy cooking, are from Penn Dutch country, or just want to sample some regional cooking, this book is a great choice for you! Enjoy!

This is one of my most used cookbooks. I was raised eating a lot of Pa Dutch food but the aunt who cooked it passed away before I could pick her brain for all of her secrets. Ms. Groff's recipes are always exactly how I remember my aunt's dishes tasting.

Information about mustache cups has been a well-kept Victorian secret, but this book brushes away the myths and the mystery. Here these Victorian oddities are displayed and explained, from dainty miniatures to hefty farmers' cups. Whether made from ceramics, pottery, silver, or other metals, mustache cups and their many surprising accessories are shown to be cross-collectibles for specialists of all types of tableware. A history of mustache cups is provided, and over 600 color photographs feature more than 640 cups, representing such famous manufacturers as Meissen, Dresden, Royal Crown Derby, Irish Belleek, Limoges, Nippon, and R.S. Prussia. Price guides are included.

If you collect mustache cups--you need this valuable collector's guide. Written in an enjoyable format, the book gives hundreds of colorful pictures of mustache cups and saucers from around the world. There are pages of valuable potters marks to check your own with. There is even a section on quadruple plate mustache cups and marks. The history of the cups is great. And, best of all, there is a price/value guide for each cup. Now I know what my collection is worth! I'm so glad that this book has finally been written. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Not since Dorothy Hammond's 1972 book on Mustache Cups has anyone written on this subject. Pauline and Glenn are to be congratulated for producing this fine publication which, in my opinion, is long overdue.

The book is split into chapters dealing with the different types of cups and saucers and it is well illustrated with detailed photographs. No matter how many pictures the book has, though, there never seems to be enough of them and they leave you wanting more. One chapter that I particularly found useful deals with manufacturer's marks. This is an excellent reference section that should help date most marked pieces in any collection.

The authors have included valuations on most pieces which they explained should act as only a guide to real market prices. The problem with listing valuations, which Dorothy Hammond also acknowledged, is that prices may soon become out of date or not be truly reflective of the actual market prices when one considers the multitude of styles, types and condition of pieces that exist.

I know that the authors are considering a second edition: I hope they succeed.

This is the most comprehensive book ever written about mustache cups, their history, age, and value. The photography is excellent. Not since 1972, when Dorothy Hammond published her book, has a book shown the pictures, dates, descriptions, condition, the backstamp and the value. Their book includes wonderful sets and groupings; silver cups/saucers and their marks; reproductions and fakes; and a wonderful chapter on available accessories.

Paula & Glenn should win an award for this one!

If you're looking for a step-by-step procedure with a lot of detail photos--this isn't it. Rather, this is a very basic intro to the Geisler-Moroder method of establishing the basic planes of the human face and head. If you have carved heads before, this is a good excercise in proportion and learning how to establish the reference lines for turning the head away from the "straight-on" look in most carving books. If you're shopping for a carving vacation spot in europe, this will definitely motivate a trip to the Geisler-Moroder school, which was probably the reason for this book. For example, in the photo section on types of finishing we find that the painted bust was painted: "with an 'antique painting' technique...and mastering it takes lots of patience, time and special skills". That was helpful, wasn't it?

                                                Book Description

What does a writer do when he's got a family that includes a blacklisted member of the Hollywood Ten, the brains behind Tony the Tiger and the Marlboro Man, a trio of gay puppeteers, the world's leading birdwatcher, sixties hippies, a Dutch stowaway who served in an all-black regiment during the American Civil War, a mother of unusual compassion and understanding, and a convicted murderer? He tells their stories and secrets, illuminating 150 years of American life along the way.

Dan Bessie begins the journey through his family history with his great-grandfather in the cargo hold of a ship bound for New York on the storm-tossed Atlantic. What follows are stories of his grandfather's various entrepreneurial schemes (including a folding butter box business), a grandmother who was voted “New York's Prettiest Shop Girl” (and who resisted the recruitment efforts of various city madams), and his uncle Harry's Turnabout Theater in Los Angeles (a renowned puppet theater drawing patrons as diverse as Shirley Temple, Ray Bradbury, and Albert Einstein).

Through inherited journals and literary effects, Bessie comes to a new understanding of his father, Alvah. An actor and writer, he fought in the Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. When he returned to the States, he headed to the Warner backlots to begin a screenwriting career. But as congress began investigating radicals in the film industry, Alvah was blacklisted for his Communist sympathies and was soon sent to jail as one of the Hollywood Ten.

His grandmother's cousin, Sidney Lenz, wrote Lenz on Bridge, a classic guide to the game of contract bridge. Bessie describes what was billed as the Bridge Battle of the Century, a 1931 match between Lenz and an upstart opponent that was covered by journalists from all over the world. Bessie's brother-in-law Wes Wilson designed rock and roll posters for the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco during the 1960s, living a counterculture existence vastly different from the bridge-mad Depression Era.

Cousin Michael was heir to the compulsive storytelling characterizing many of the Bessies. He found his niche in publishing, co-founding the Atheneum Press and shaping books by people such as Anwar Sadat, Edward Albee, and Aldous Huxley. With an equally impressive career, Uncle Leo built the country's fifth largest advertising agency. Working 364 days a year, he lived for the passion of putting words and images together. A passion of a different sort led cousin Phoebe Snetsinger to travel from Webster Groves, Missouri, to the far corners of Africa and Asia. The world's leading birder, she sighted 8,400 different birds—nearly 85 percent of the species known to exist.

An extraordinary strain of creativity runs through the Bessie and Burnett clans, and Rare Birds celebrates the colorful diversity of a remarkable and accomplished family. While their choices and professions run the gamut of the American experience in the twentieth century, the history of the nation can be traced in these people's lives. Bessie's passionate birds of a feather gather to sing their unique song across decades and generations.

After reading "Rare Birds" by Dan Bessie I thought, "What a family!". Every family has a few characters or maybe a semi-famous person. But, in "Rare Birds" I was totally fascinated by the wide range of interesting and famous family members. I especially liked the chapters on his Uncle Harry Burnett and the Turnabout Theatre. The book is written in a relaxed style that makes you feel like you're having a conversation with the author. It made me want to search out my own family tree, shake it and see who falls out. Fascinating and enjoyable book!

This is a truly heartfelt look into a talented, creative and outspoken family. From the wild west days to the Spanish Civil War, Mr. Bessie examines and tells the tales of his family with warmth and wit. These are people who lived life, not coasted through it. The exhaustive research is evident yet the author honestly points out when the trail goes cold and he is left with only oral history or speculation. Above all, he treats each life with respect and love even when he doesn't wholly approve. Not just a truly entertaining read, it prompts all of us to really get to know our own family members, rare or otherwise, in a meaningful way before we find it's too late.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Rare Birds.......2001-01-26

Great book. Not only well written but written with the insight of a mature, intelligent sensitive human being. Great insight into the human condition. The author comes from a unusally talented and creative family and as this book demonstrates is as creative as any of them. Telling us the story of his family gives us alot information about the political climate in the USA and its effect on individual citizens. Extremly interesting and varied Family members from the world's must prolific bird watcher to a Leftist screen writer who fought with the Abraham Lincoln`Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.

4 out of 5 stars Birds of an extraordinary feather ..........2001-01-08

Dan Bessie implies that we ALL have such people in our families. Frankly - I doubt that. Certainly, if we all had his talent, we could make much of our own oddballs and eccentrics, but in the final analysis we would still only be colouring the grey. His family is and was extraordinary.

"Rare Birds" is an affectionate sketch of an abnormally talented and unusual family. Mr Bessie - being a modest man (judging by how little he refers to himself in the narrative) - would doubtless take issue with that summation, but it is nonetheless true.

In another century, the father of a famous family of writers (Patrick Bronte) acknowledged his own rather eccentric attributes, but at the same time pointed out to his daughter's biographer that if he had been one of the world's "concentric" men he would not, in all probability, have produced such children as his were.

Mr Bessie can, in a way, lay claim to the same process. Talent only occasionally emerges from nowhere, with no previous indication of its existence. Even with the most fascinating material, more illustrious writers have failed to grip the imagination of the reader. Mr Bessie's almost tangible affection and respect for his subjects shines through the narrative.

"Rare Birds" can be as strongly recommended to scholars of the McCarthy witch-hunt period as to those who simply enjoy good writing. Mr Bessie grew up in one of the most unnerving and nervous periods of US history and his personal reflections are both telling and educational.

4 out of 5 stars noble and eccentric family stories.......2001-01-06

On a background of flawlessly researched history and detail, Dan Bessie paints his family stories of eccentricity, sadness, and triumph-over-adversity. He weaves his own mythic connection to the joys and sufferings of his highly creative lineage, as well as to a few seedy characters who don't share his blood but whom are in his blood nevertheless. Dan says that in microcosm, all families share the same threads. This may be so, but it is rare to find an author who doesn't slide off into judgement and criticism, using relations as targets for unfinished emotional business. Dan Bessie does not make the mistake of cluttering up these vivid and heroic characters with his own gunk, which leaves plenty of space for the color and magic of his family to shine through. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in writing their family story, a quintessential starting point for any writer. My hope is that I too will discover as many redeeming qualities in my own batch of goofy relatives.
