Book Description

An unabridged recording of a one-of-a-kind modern fable!

Need a lift?

The man was gorgeous, sitting astride his Harley Davidson, mysteriously parked on a moonlit strip of sand. At thirty-seven, Christine Moore had a world-class case of burnout: career blues, no husband, no children, an imperfect figure, and dimming expectations. "I'm going to show you a peace so beautiful, you'll probably forget what your life has been like up until now," he said. Who was this guy? "My friends call me Joe. Others call me 'God' or 'Higher Power.' You can call me whatever you're most comfortable with." Right.

But he knows everything about her, every one of her heart's desires. A sweet serenity settles over Christine. And so the journey begins, a triumphant odyssey of self-discovery that illuminates our souls. As we join one woman's inspiring quest for healing and life-changing truths, we discover six powerful precepts that offer the deepest peace and fulfillment we can ever know. Every woman longing to experience the joy of loving and of respecting her true self will find comfort, guidance and hope in the simple, profound secrets to an enlightened and enriched new life that Christine learns.

In the life-affirming tradition of The Celestine Prophecy, God on a Harley lights the way to a much-needed spiritual home.

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive and false teaching.......2004-08-08

As a born again Christian, I hadn't gotten very far into it at all when I started feeling uneasy about it. I did finish the book, though - hoping to figure out what was making me so uneasy. What bothered me about it is that is not written from a Christian world view. It is humanism, in all it's deceptiveness and subtlety. That's why it made me so uneasy. First and foremost, it takes away from God His most important attributes - His omniscience and His consistency. It says that God made mistakes and that He is not perfect, that His will changes and that He exists only within us however we want Him to. The scary part is the subtlety - which is what is so insidious about humanism as a cult. The message in the book certainly makes you feel good and gives you warm fuzzes. It certainly can speak to me where I am with the current changes in my life....live in the moment, simplify your life, be patient, etc. There isn't anything wrong with any of those things. However, comments throughout the book make it clear that the author believes that each of us are our own "god" and there is no mention of salvation, of Christ's sacrifice, etc. The end of the book really left me puzzled and maybe because I don't know enough about the humanistic beliefs....but the author seems to be referring to the "being" that she has been eluding to as "god" and references him as "Joseph of Nazareth" - I didn't quite get that! I thought through most of the book that the "being" was supposed to be Jesus......but the end of the book says he was Joseph.

I thought in many ways, the author made the "being" seem cavalier and glib - and that was a bit unsettling. I didn't like the way the main character got jealous of the "being" - I found myself praying for the author - that she find The True source of "warm fuzzies." Sure, the book was full of them - it was a feel good story - makes you feel empowered when you read it - as if you can change yourself and your life by just adhering to 6 rules.....but the only true source of change is through Jesus Christ - and that the change He can make in our lives is permanent and complete. If you're looking for good Bible-based fiction, this is not your book. If you are a new Christian or are struggling with your faith, this book could leave you quite confused. Don't buy it. Don't read it. Stay clear of it's deceptive message and the humanisitic cult that it perpetuates.

3 out of 5 stars it's just ok.......2004-04-08

I really thought I might connect with this book, but unfortunately it fell way flat of my expectations. I am 37, going through a divorce and wanting a career change. On the plus side, I'd love someday to be a writer but never thought I had the talent. Now I know that talent is not needed! The message of the book was ok...but that's all...ok. There are so many other books (parables and allegories) that say what this one did so much better. I'm amazed at all the 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful........2004-01-31

This book is amazingly written. It gives you (especially women) so much enlightenments to life.. and it addresses many difficulties that women go through everyday. It's a GREAT fable!!

1 out of 5 stars A total waste of money.......2004-01-11

This is a good example of "You can't tell a book by its cover". My wife and I ride Harleys, and enjoy reading books on many different subjects. We also think we have some spiritual sensitivity. Anyway, my Harley lady saw this book while Christmas shopping, and picked it up for me as a stocking-stuffer. When I opened it, I jokingly asked her if she found it in the motorcycle section or the religion section of the bookstore. After reading the first couple of chapters, I was about to consign it to the trashbin, but continued to read it, in part piqued by curiosity as to how such lightweight drivel makes it into print, in part hoping to find something redeeming in it. To sum up, all this book has taught me is that as a writer, you'll never go broke underestimating people's intellect, and as long as you use a few easily-applied formulas (the aging single woman in search of fulfillment; the hot brand ----in the title, of course; God ---it also helps to put Him in the title; banal self-help platitudes, etc.) you'll be laughing all the way to the bank. A total waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Don't forget about the audio version..........2003-10-11

I read for a living, so reading for pleasure is now, unfortunately, not the most appealing. I have turned to Audio Books, and what a joy they have been. I'm particularly thrilled to have "read" God on a Harley. In short, it changed my life, much the same as it has for the reviewers before me, and I've recommended it to all my friends. If you're not a big reader or feel you just don't have the time, check out the audio version. You'll find yourself not wanting to get out of the car so you can finish the chapter!

5 out of 5 stars Kate is great!.......2007-04-20

Forget Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The real shining star at DC Comics is Manhunter, the coolest heroine since...well, EVER. What I love most about Kate is that she isn't the squeaky clean, self righteous, supermodel in spandex that we see so often in comic books. She makes mistakes that can get her killed. She can be quite ethically challenged. And while she's just as likely as Batman to follow a nasty villain into the sewers, she'd rather shoot him in the face than lock him up in Arkham Asylum.

Normally I don't go for DC Comics, because the characters usually feel so cardboardy. After reading the first few issues, you'll be amazed that DC didn't release this under the Vertigo imprint because it is much edgier than any other superhero book they have on the shelf. Marc Andreyko not only does a great job with Kate, but he's peppered the book with an excellent supporting cast, particularly Dylan Battles, the former henchman-for-hire who manages her weapons and technology. I love a book that puts characters ahead of mindless super-battles!

I've only been following this series for a few months, and I can't wait until the third trade paperback comes out this summer so I can catch up on the issues I haven't read yet.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and witty.......2007-02-05

This is one of the better comic book stories featuring female characters. Why? Because most comic creators know that sex sells, and dress up their femme fatales in accordingly skimpy getups (one of the worst offenders is DC's Power Girl.) In this environment, MANHUNTER stands out as a comic that doesn't rely on the character's chest to drive sales. Instead, the Manhunter character draws us in by being human, and kicking butt without becoming a "girl power!" cliche.

Kate Spencer lives works as a DA in a city without "capes", or superheroes. As Superman patrols metropolis and Batman swings through Gotham, Los Angeles remains dirty, unclean, but still full of "metahumans" (super-villians, basically.) When one of these fiends wriggles out of the legal system, Kate decides enough is enough and dons a costume of her own.

What's remarkable about MANHUNTER is how it balances fight scenes and genuine drama--each chapter contains enough of both to keep the story going. MANHUNTER also gets a thumbs-up for explaining why most of the "real" cities in the DC Universe don't have superheroes protecting them.

4 out of 5 stars An Original And Good Take On The 'Violent Vigilante Superhero' Style Of Book.......2006-06-28

Kate Spencer is a California prosecutor who, after losing another case against a killer metahuman, takes it upon herself to beginning meting out her own brand of lethal street justice. Arming and outfitting herself with various paraphenelia from the evidence store rooms (obtained from various villains) she takes on the identity of Manhunter (a popular moniker for DC characters, as someone in the book points out) and begins her vigilante career. That's "Manhunter" on the surface, sounding like an attempt to give the DC Universe its own Punisher-type character, or even like an attempt to amp up the aggressiveness-level of DC's own Green Arrow from his 80s/early 90s modus operandi. But rather than try to just copy the success of Punisher or Green Arrow, or other violent, on-the-edge, vigilante characters, there's some different factors at play here to give the "Manhunter" title its own identity.

There's considerable doubt about Kate's motivations. A hostile, cynical person to begin with, it's quite effective the way that, after her first kill, she's not only surprised by her total lack of remorse and by the strange satisfaction she feels, but the way she goes about things next. We see her going through the justice department (not to be confused with the Justice League) files looking for potential next targets, in an almost leisurely browse. One is left with the feeling that it's possible that she may not be entirely driven by a need for revenge and defending the innocent, but may be starting already to edge toward the path of using revenge and justice as her excuse, with killing itself being the real motivation.

Equally plausible is another scenario: Kate is socially dysfunctional, has a tenuous-at-best rellationship with her young son, an openly warring one with her ex-husband and is not the most personable or friendly towards much of anyone. There's a possibility that her whole career as a prosecutor has been an attempt to - what's the best way to phrase this? - to be a part of a society that she wants to be more integrated with, and to contribute, partly as a substitute for what she feels are lackings in her outward life. In this scenario, we have an outwardly hostile, mean-hearted character who's very different on the inside. And now that she has the mask and the identity, she's going much further than she ever has before. In this scenario, she's driven by noble motivations, but doesn't seem to realize how she's already dangerously close to losing control. She even seems to be developing a strange fixation on her first kill.

Those are two very different takes, but the opening issues of the "Manhunter" series are raising a lot of questions. There's the usual, subjective question of 'are her methods justified?' because it's clear from Issue 1 that Kate's not just setting out to take these characters down and sometimes being left with no choice but to kill - killing is the objective, and apparantly not just against certain extreme cases but as a general modus operandi in her new crimefighting career. We're left wondering just how far she's going to go in this, we're left wondering about her true motivation, we're left wondering if the path she's taken is going to take her a Lot further than she actually wants to go, we're left wondering a lot. And that's good. There are a lot of different ways they can go with this. Another aspect of the whole 'split possibilities' thing is that the new Manhunter finds herself - to her own surprise - dreaming about being accepted into the DCU's hero community, and at the same time increasingly afraid that they're going to be hunting her down because of her very bloody methods.

Kate Spencer isn't as immediately likable as DCU heroines as Zatanna or Wonder Woman, but she is interesting, and starts growing on one before too long. The thing is, whether she emerges as a champion or journeys all the way not just to, but crosses, the line between good and bad, it's going to be a very interesting ride, and leave us with a good addition to the DCU's cast of characters.

This collection reprints Numbers 1 - 5 of the Manhunter series, with No. 5 tying into DC's grand "Identity Crisis" crossover.

5 out of 5 stars Manhunter, a new superheroine on the block.......2006-03-30

Kate Spencer(a.k.a Manhunter) is one of the newest superheroines that DC Comics has introduced. Collected here are the first six issues of her ongoing series, written by Marc Andreyko. Kate is a rare breed of female superhero, a woman who is a complex character, and who has a convincing 'voice'. Kate Spencer maybe be drawn by the artists as traditionally 'pretty', but she is no mere eyecandy, as she is a superheroine who can fight just as good as the guys.

5 out of 5 stars Chipping in with another 5-star review.......2006-02-13

Responding to writer Marc Andreyko's campaign to save his DC Comics MANHUNTER series, I picked up the first trade paperback MANHUNTER: STREET JUSTICE with moderate hopes. I mean, how good can it be if the writer is pleading for new readers, right? Well, I'm glad that Andreyko put himself out there, as this is one series that should not be missed - another great new title from a DC Comics that is very concerned with character legacies and continuity. This trade collects the first 5 issues, telling the story of federal prosecutor Kate Spencer, who has had enough of mass-murdering metahumans taking advantage of loopholes in the legal system. Swiping some confiscated supervillain gear, she sets off to deal out some harsh justice, becoming yet another character in the DC Universe to take the name of Manhunter. Along the way, we learn about her troubled personal life, which is one of the more interesting parts of the book. Kate Spencer is not a likeable person, but it's possible that relieving the stress of her courtroom defeats by beating up criminals may be just what she needs to rekindle her relationship with her young son, and perhaps even her ex-husband.

Most of the stories are told in flashbacks, which is a good alternative to the standard linear story. I'm really impressed with Andreyko's writing style, and Jesus Saiz, one of DC's hot new artists, is the perfect choice for this series. Andreyko's introduction indicates that there are many more exciting developments in store for this character, including an analysis of the many Manhunters of ages past, as well Kate's connections to other heroes of the DCU. This Manhunter is far superior to the ill-conceived version that came out of DC's Zero Hour event. It's a book that should not be missed - CHECK OUT MANHUNTER!!!

4 out of 5 stars Return to a Mars that never was.......2002-08-02

Lin Carter is best known for his editorial work in the field of fantasy, particularly in the creation of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series. His own work, alas, all too often emphasized his weaknesses at the expense of some very real strengths. But occasionally those strengths had their chance to shine, as in this solid novel.

While Leigh Brackett may have provided the basic model of his Mars, Lin Carter did something exciting & moving with it. Combining the wish-fulfilling adventure of the best of the pulps, a streak of elegaic poetry, and a clear, direct depiction of a dying culture struggling to resist the rapacious colonialism of a greedy Earth, he created a fine story that lingers after the last page. And while the science has been superseded by real-life discoveries, that hardly matters; the color & haunting, dreamlike longing for something precious but fading is what counts. A worthy addition to the small shelf of autumnal Martian fiction!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sci-fi/fanstasy book about Mars.......2001-04-20

Strange and unusual concepts about Mars and it's relationship to Earth, a quest for redemption, and a budding romance all make up this classic by Lin Carter. It is a book that, while short on scientific fact as we know it now (thus resulting in the 4 rather than 5 star rating), is not short on imagination and pure fun!

It is a fast read and not designed to delve too deeply into the background and motivation of the characters other than the main one, but that suits this book as it is not intended to be a character driven story: more a plot driven story with much emphasis on the main character.

An ancient civilization on Mars conflicts with the civilization of Earth and a man tries to regain his own identity amidst the struggle. I do not want to spoil it too much for you, but if you have read and enjoyed the "Martian Chronicles" or any other Martian book regarding ancient civilizations on the Red Planet, this book will also fit your fancy. Get it, you will be happy.

This book has many great recipes, including many recipes that my picky kids like, such as Chicken Parmesan and Lasagna with No-Cook Noodles. There are many others that I can't wait to try. They are quick and easy to cook - great for busy parents. I also recommend Weinhofen's other "Updated Recipe Box" cookbook.

As with most Antique Trader (AT) reference guides, this one covers a broad range of art pottery artists and manufacturers. However, as is again typical of the AT guides, the scope is quite ambitious, as is the content. The pieces are rare and pricey, and there is too great a variety at the expense of thoroughness. It's a good book for getting a basic range of the different price levels and styles of artists and manufacturers, but if you want to seriously collect or deal in any specific pottery line, you'd do better to find a book devoted to that particular pottery.

                            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-03

I purchase a lot of interior design books -- two from this publisher simultaneously. The photographic quality of this book is no different from the other one -- less than desirable. While the book is printed on nice paper and the cover is attractive, many of the pictures inside are out of focus, outdated, and very few of the rooms are "fresh" and inspiring. Most of the photographs, if not all, are from local showcase houses from the 1990's. I frequent many showcase houses in Georgia and have seem many rooms that are truly inspired and looked beautiful and designed by top notch interior designers. These authors missed the mark. The title does not do this book justice. I think the title should have been "Out of date and late in Georgia" or "My high school art project". At best, this was a very disappointing purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photography of Beautiful Rooms.......2006-06-08

When you think of 'Spectacular Homes' you tend to think of LA or New York, maybe Aspen or some place like that. You don't think of Georgia, or at least I don't.

This book shows that I should think more about other places. And to be sure, Atlanta is home to some large companies (Coke for instance) that have produced wealthy families. So why not Atlanta.

This book showcases the work of nearly fifty designers that have produced homes easily worth picturing. As one of these architects says, 'what's right is whatever the client wants.' And the homes shown here vary from ultra modern to Gone With The Wind traditional, from formal to casual. Above all else, the rooms shown are 'Spectacular.'

The book is on interior design, so it does not show the exterior of the house and its settings. The rooms may be in the houses of the designer, they may be of clients. The designer picked the house and the room to show off their work. The photography is excellent, including some very tricky views where the sun coming from outside would tend to confuse the camera. After that it was beautifully printed, on high quality paper to show off the photographs.

A good idea book, a good coffee table book.

                                          Book Description

Nelson Riddle will forever be linked with the music and recordings of such unforgettable vocalists as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, and dozens of others. Riddle not only helped to establish Nat “King” Cole's career in the 1950s, but was also a major participant in reviving Frank Sinatra's musical career. He served as arranger for many of Sinatra's albums, as well as musical director for many of the singer's television specials and feature films. Later, this renowned arranger was active in writing the scores for such television shows and feature films as Route 66, The Untouchables, Robin and the Seven Hoods, Paint Your Wagon, and The Great Gatsby, for which he won an Academy Award.

September in the Rain is the first-ever biography of the most highly respected arranger in the history of American popular music. This fascinating book is based on more than 200 personal interviews with Riddle's closest friends, family, and colleagues. Readers will receive an inside look at his inspirations, his work, and his creative genius . . . how he revived his own career after the abrupt change in popular music during the '70s . . . and the story of his brilliant association with singer Linda Ronstadt, which resulted in three gold and platinum albums, sold a grand total of 6.1 million records, and earned him one of his three Grammy awards.

For readers who are fans of such great stars as Dean Martin, Johnny Mathis, and Judy Garland, September in the Rain provides an exclusive, inside look at the creative genius who helped build these singers into musical legends.

4 out of 5 stars A Long Overdue Tribute to the Greatest Arranger.......2001-12-03

This is a long-overdue biography of the greatest of the musical arrangers of the great period of adult pop music in the 1950s and 1960s. Much has been made of Riddle's contribution to the careers of Sinatra, Cole, Fitzgerald in re-issued album liner notes, but little has been said about Riddle the man and musician independently in his own right. This book goes a long way to redressing the balance.

Unfortunately, arrangers are often the unsung heroes of pop music. They received little public recognition for their outstanding work which is often as intrinsically important to the interpretation of a song as the sheet music, lyrics and the singer themselves. It is nice that Riddle receives a lot of praise here.

The information in the book is mostly cogent and informative. Levinson unfortunately makes some errors that indicates that he (and the editor) is not familiar with all Riddle's work i.e. he says that Riddle's arrangement of "When You're Lover Has Gone" for Sue Raney is upbeat in contrast to Keely Smith's 'downer' arrangement. In fact, the opposite is true; mistakes like this are annoying to a music fan as these works are great Riddle arrangements.

Levinson also glosses over certain pieces of work; Nelson's arrangements for Shirley Bassey and Danny Williams are hardly mentioned. Nelson's arrangement of "What Now My Love" played a big part in Bassey's first breakthrough into pop's top echelon.

Generally, however, this book is a good overview of Riddle's life and career. A detailed discography (LP and CD-reissues) would have been a nice touch and certain areas would have benefitted from more detail but on the whole this is a very worthy endeavour.

5 out of 5 stars Based on over two hundred personal interviews.......2001-11-12

Few may recall Nelson Riddle, but he produced the music which made Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and other vocalists famous. Peter Levinson's September In The Rain is based on over two hundred personal interviews with Riddle's friends and family and discusses his life and many contributions.

                                          3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-10-28

In comparison with Levinson's book on Harry James (superb) this is disappointing. Levinson admittedly has a problem with Riddle himself, who comes across as a dour, insecure, often bitter, man. He turns-out not to be a great subject, which is a pity, given his undeniable influence on some of the best American popular music of the century. There are some interesting insights into his work with Dorsey, Cole and Sinatra in particular, though I felt the book concentrated too much on the difficulties of his relationship with Sinatra. I don't think any Sinatra fan would deny Riddle's enormous influence on Sinatra's work. Without Sinatra, however, it seems unlikely Riddle would be remembered as he is today. Sinatra, probably more than any other performer, took pains to compliment the work of his arrangers, especially on stage. Riddle and Peter Levinson, unfortunately, appear to have undervalued this. It's certainly worth a read as a contribution to the, fortunately, growing body of literature on the swing era and the big bands, but Trumpet Blues is far superior.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful look into the life of an American pop legend.......2001-10-26

Being a fan of both Nat King Cole's and Frank Sinatra's work, I was intrigued by this book about the man who was pretty much responsible for their successful run of hits in the 1950s and '60s. Not knowing much about Nelson Riddle other than his association with Cole, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and other singers he arranged material for, I found this book to be very interesting indeed.

Mr. Levinson's "September In The Rain" is a candid look at the life and career of Riddle, which certainly had its ups and downs. Riddle was able to create great music, but he suffered immensely in both his personal and professional life: one wife who turned to alcoholism to cope with her husband's indiscretions, and sometimes reacting with physical violence, and another, who was domineering and had no love for Riddle's children from his previous marriage, and isolated Riddle from people she didn't like; an overbearing and snobbish mother, a weak but loving father, various affairs (most notable was his torrid love affair with singer Rosemary Clooney), not being given credit when it was due, his complex relationship with Sinatra and his children, and much more. Riddle, as talented as he was, was at times doubtful of his abilities, and rarely ever smiled, because he was almost always saddened by SOMETHING and this was true throughout his life.

Reading this book, I found myself bordering between distain and sympathy for Riddle, reading about how he related to his children, the musicians in his orchestra, and the singers who worked with him. But it is my general feeling that Riddle was just like any other person who had a dysfunctional upbringing: it would carry over to his adult life, and ultimately shape who he was to become in later years. But one thing above all must be said: Nelson Riddle was indeed a musical genius, and created some of the most memorable musical arrangements ever of popular standards of the mid to late 20th century. For fans of this type of music, it is worth reading. Find out just what made this man a legend in his own time.
