3 out of 5 stars great ideas but not so great execution.......2006-05-01

I really *wanted* to like Tanya Huff. And I like the storyline a lot - Vicki's handicap, Henry's ancestry, and a mystery surrounding a family of werewolves. It sounds great, tons of potential.

I think I'd read about half the book before I realized that I didn't like it. I thought the writing was rather awkward - not bad, just not smooth or particularly evocative - and little things kept bothering me; the thoughts of the villain were over-the-top foreboding and gloomy, the fact that the culprit is revealed to the reader so early in the book killed the momentum, the really abrupt shifts in Vicki and Henry's relationship just confused and disappointed me.

3 out of 5 stars Grows on you.......2006-01-09

I'm quite liking this book. Unpretentious storytelling is a rare thing, and that's what Huff does quite well. The story takes you along at a nice pace, with just enough of everything to make it satisfying; nice, heroine, description, and plot. Good dialogue. All in all, I'm impressed enough to read more.

5 out of 5 stars This Entire Series is Excellent! Highly Recommended.......2004-03-10

This is Tanya Huff's second novel in the "Blood Series." If you have not read Ms. Huff's entire series, be sure to obtain all five books. They are excellent and you will not be disappointed! (Blood Price; Blood Trial; Blood Lines; Blood Pact; Blood Debt).

In her first novel, Blood Price, you met ex-cop Vickie Nelson turned private investigator, who had to leave the police force due to a dibilitating eye condition which leaves her literally blind at night. Quite by accident while working on a case, Vickie met romance writer/400 year old vampire Henry. Henry helped Vickie with her first case by being her eyes at night. Vickie and Henry are not only friends but there is an attraction beginning to blossom between them. Also in the mix is Vickie's ex working partner, Mike Celluli, who she still sees as a friend and romantic interest. This second book continues here.

Vickie receives a telephone call from her friend Henry. He has a new case for her if she decides to accept. Vickie goes to Henry's apartment to meet her new clients, who turn out to be none other than werewolves. It seems that someone has discovered the werewolves' secret (that they are indeed half human, half animal), and has been shooting and killing various family members. The various killings have all taken place at night while the weres are at their home (they own a farm in the London countryside). As you can guess, the weres cannot go to the police in fear of their secret being discovered. Vickie and Henry will have to go to the weres' farm and work together to help the weres discover the killer before any further family members are killed. That's the basic premise of the story.

I have noticed that many vampire fans of early Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series have always recommended Tanya Huff's series as another excellent vampire series. I have to agree. I collect all types of vampire novels, and next to the early Anita Blake's work, this series is just as good. You will not be disappointed. I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars The storyline thickens.......2003-12-13

The love duel between the vampire and the policeman over the former police detective is about 2/3 of the plot. The mystery of who's killing the werewolves seems almost secondary. I found it a little more entertaining than the first in the series, but it still didn't keep me up at night.

2 out of 5 stars Not in the same class with others of the ilk.......2003-06-17

I've read the first three books in this series, and I can't say I particularly cared for this one. The werewolves are pretty silly, and not nearly as fleshed out as other authors' portrayal of the same. Plus, I just don't really care for Vicki. She is nowhere near in the same class as Anita Blake as far as being a well-rounded character. You'd think someone would have a little bit of soul-searching if they are involved sexually/romatically with two men simultaneously. It is possible to be a "tough girl" and still have emotions.

A NEW RACE- Carrie and Kusac-she a human telepath, he a Sholan one-have together found a love stronger than all the differences between their two races. But now they have become the center of a power struggle between their peoples, as well as of one between the various Guilds and Clans on the Sholan homeworld. And they have discovered, too, that their situation is not unique. Other Humans and Sholans are bonding as well. With the Sholan homeworld about to bear witness to the birth of a new hybridized race with powers beyond the control of any of the Guilds, the current unstable political climate may soon explode into something far more violent. Approached by the Telepaths, the Warriors, and the secret organization known as the Brotherhood, Kusac realizes that he and Carrie have no choice but to strike out on their own, forming a new group outside of all the Clans and Guilds, and owing loyalty only to the most ancient of their gods. For only through exploring the Sholans' long-buried and purposely forgotten past, can they hope to find the answers they seek-and the path to survival not only for their own new people, but for the Sholans and humans as well. . . .

      3 out of 5 stars Still disappointed..........2007-07-26

I have a very bad habit when it comes to books. Two habits actually -- I always try to finish a book that I start, no matter how bad it is, and I try to finish a series if I start one. Sometimes the books start off really great and then take a wrong turn somewhere and plunge into the depths. Or a so-so series begins to get it together about halfway and I get hooked.

Sadly, in Lisanne Norman's ongoing series of science fiction novels, this hasn't been happening. Set in the far future, where humanity is starting to colonize the galaxy, but things aren't turning out too rosy. They've landed smack-dab into the middle of a long, drawn out war between the Valtegans, a reptilian species, and the Shola, a race of feline telepaths.

Now in the third volume, we're dealing with Sholan mythology and legend, and with the troubles of humans and Sholans intermingling, bith in personalities and in genetics. The story also picks right up where the previous novel ends -- Carrie, Kusac's human mate, is suffering from her battle to keep him and the loss of their unborn child. Kusac, the Sholan part of the pair, is fighting with his family and the telepathic guild and the Brotherhood to keep the human and Sholan bondpairs from interference from the more traditional elements of Sholan society. And especially from Lijou and Esken, who seem to have personal grudges against Kusac, the Humans, and the self-appointed guardian to Kusac and Carrie -- Kaid.

In fact, a lot of this story centers around Kaid, his past relationships, the one that he has with Dzaka, and especially with Carrie and Kusac. The other large plotline in this story is a growing rebellion that is being launced by a religious fanatic who feels that all telepathy is evil, and naturally, it's up to Carrie, Kusac and Kaid to fix it, and they use a religious rite of passage known as the 'fire margins' to fix it. Unfortunately, no one has ever returned from the fire margins alive, either...

This is marginally better than the previous novel, but I am not filled with much hope for the next one in the series either. While the author has certainly come up with an interesting premise for her human-feline races, and there are brief moments of excitement and action, this is still a pretty leaden work that steadily plods along.

A very average read. Somewhat recommended.

1 out of 5 stars What a way to destroy an excellent Story.......2003-11-16

I absolutely loved Turning Point and Fortune's Wheel. I liked Carrie and Kusac, and even Kusac's family. Even Kaid. All that has been destroyed in this book for one main reason. Carrie and Kusac had a wonderful relationship, and there was no reason to destroy it, along with the story, but destroy it has been done. By allowing Carrie to have an approved affair was absolutely disgusting, the worse because it was sanctioned. There was no need for that. Not only that, I tortured myself by reading the later books and it only got worse.

Read the first two books and STOP THERE. The rest of the books are not worth your time.

      5 out of 5 stars Becoming a Triad.......2003-01-23

Fire Margins is the third novel in the Sholan Alliance series, following Fortune's Wheel. In the previous novel, Vanna has saved the lives of Carrie and Kusac when they suffer Contact Deprivation and Kaid has saved Carrie from an impulsive assassin. Carrie interrogates a Valtegan prisoner, who promptly commits suicide. Carrie, Kusac, Kaid and Vanna are taken to Shola, where Carrie meets Kusac's family...and his betrothed, Rala Vailkoi. Carrie becomes pregnant, but loses the fetus in a duel with Rala. Vanna is then kidnapped by Dzaka and taken to view a Valtegan skeleton found among Sholan ruins.

Carrie and Kusac, and the other Leska pairs, are being used as political tools by the Telepath Guild, the Brotherhood of Vartra, and the Sholan military. They have found temporary protection with Alien Relations, which mandates all mixed Leska pairs to be housed on the heavily secured Aldatan estate. However, they need to establish independence from the Guilds and Clans. To do this, they decide to visit the Fire Margins and become the En'shalla -- in the hands of the gods -- Clan, but several events, including the wounding of Carrie and Kusac during the duel, have precluded this effort.

The Fire Margins are not a physical place, but a situation encountered in a trance. No telepath has every returned from the Fire Margins, but Carrie and Kusac believe that telepaths who are able to fight will have a much better chance. However, they need a third person to form a triad and they choose Kaid.

This novel begins to explore the role of the Sholan gods in society. It includes several direct contacts between the characters and the god Vartra. What is Vartra and what do the Fire Margins have to do with him?

(...). Moreover, the control that Sholan females have over conception almost totally eliminates unwanted pregnancies. Indeed, the Sholan males are completely dependent upon the good wishes of the females if they want to have cubs; even rape doesn't work against a determined female. I can see where that would bother many males in our society, as evidenced by the deeply felt opposition to birth control.

Once again, this series dwells on the doubts and conflicts among the main characters. This novel focuses on Kaid more than the others, but Carrie, Kusac and other characters have problems of their own which they must work out on stage.

Recommended for all Norman fans and anyone who enjoys psychological motifs in a SF setting.

4 out of 5 stars great book should've started at beginning of series though.......2001-09-17

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the idea of Leska links and the culture of the Sholans was original and very inventive. I do wish I would've started this series in the beginning though, because some the book can be difficult to understand in the beginning if you don't. However, I just bought the entire series and will read Fire Margins again so that I can get the entire feel of the book and understand it more.
This book was a good piece of literature and I hope she continues writing.

2 out of 5 stars 700 pages of... not much.......2001-07-28

First off, let me say that the two star rating is for the storyline, or lack there of. If I were giving a rating for characters, I'd give it four stars, but unfortunatly, the story is really lame. The improvment over the last book, "Fortune's Wheel", was that a lot of the soap opera dramatics have been toned down, but they're still there. Also, characters do a much better job of communicating, for the most part, and avoid a lot of petty arguments that plagued the last book. However, it's still very melodramatic and silly, with subplots that really become irritating after awhile. There is entirely too much going on at the same time, and the cliffhanger ending is a total cheap shot.

Part of what I find so troublesome is the whole telepathy thing that seems to know no boundries. Anything can be achieved through telepathy. When it gets to teleportation and (shudder) TIME TRAVEL, well, it's gone a little too far, and the whole time travel storyline causes the entire plot to colapse within its own paradox by the end. I'm really getting sick of all the telepaths and Leskas. Isn't there anyone else on this planet besides telepaths?

And speaking of Sholan society, this was another huge problem I had. Actually it was more of an uncomfortable feeling than a problem. The sexual freedom that the sholans have was just unnerving and it didn't work for me. They don't have any problem with sleeping around, in fact, they do it a lot. When the Sholans aren't grinning, flicking their ears, or drinking c'shar, they're having guilt free sex. I'm sorry, but creatures who are capable of every single human emotion except jealousy is just stupid. Their concept of love is totally warped in this area.

So why did I finish reading it? Well, like I said, in spite of myself I liked these characters. I've grown fond of them and have been willing to put up with the insipid story line because of that. I like Kusac, Carrie, Vanna, Garras, Konis, Merral and the rest. There is a real sense of honor and friendship among them. I even grew to like Kaid by the end, eventhough I pretty much couldn't stand him for most of the time. But by the end he finally cracks and starts to show some emotion. I grew to like him the same way I grew to like Konis in the last book.

I don't know if I'll read the next one. I can't take much more of these rediculously stupid plots. The books are also much longer than they need to be, because for over 750 pages, there just wasn't a lot of content inside.

From the supplier: Lloyd's of London Chmn David Rowland indicated that cost cutting will have a high priority in the first business plan that the property and casualty insurer is now developing. Rowland told attendees at the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers in Industry and Commerce conference that Lloyd's 5% advantage over competitors in the 1960s lead to underwriter complacency and increased expenses in the 1980s. As a result of serious losses, Lloyd's now needs to operate more efficiently and less expensively.

5 out of 5 stars Renewed Hope and Strength through the Storms..........1999-12-10

This ministers help book is DEEP and reaches to the very root of ministry...the part your average preacher refuses to touch. There is comfort in knowing that even though storms are sure to come in all of our lives ...there is a Blessing in them also. The candor of this writing equates to what I believe Raw God is like!

I have read this book in its entirety many times! It continues to refresh me and my ministry each time.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent book on Black Pastoring in America.......1999-05-22

I had an opportunity to hear a sermon from Dr. Hicks as he was the featured pastor at a conference in Winston-Salem, NC. It is there that my wife purchased this book for me.

This book is very informative and very provactive in the way Dr. Hicks presents his personal vantage point upon the ever present and on going storms in the church (especially the African American church).

He presents a litany of sermons that he has composed over the course of tumultous times during the construction of a new edifice, for a church that he has recently been called to pastor.

The sermons are prefaced by a prologue that gives a scenario of why this sermon, and follows with an epilogue of how the sermon was effective.

You will be moved to tears with some of the dialogue Dr. Hicks presents and you will be very enlightened with his biblical interpretations and prayers.

If you love good preaching and teaching buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for a book like this one!.......2006-01-23

Beyond the militant veggies pictured on Veggie Revolution's cover, one will not find a raging manifesto denouncing meat eaters. Instead, the book contains an informative, intelligent, in-depth analysis of a number of topics relating to vegetarianism and the environment, with a thorough investigation of factory farming. The subject of corporate animal farms can be disturbing, yet authors Sally Kneidel, Ph.D., and Sara Kate Kneidel have a gentle way of presenting the unadulterated truth about the meat industry without resorting to shock tactics.

Despite the serious subject matter, Veggie Revolution is thoroughly readable and so well written that diverse topics such as Pfiesteria, eutrophication, and NAFTA are actually thought-provoking! Indeed, reading Veggie Revolution is like taking an environmental studies, nutrition, and economics course all wrapped into one, taught by the most interesting and capable of teachers.

There are quite a few bonuses to the book as well, such as the thirty-seven pages of recipes, and chapters on nutrition, which make the book an excellent reference and resource. Another added feature is the numerous student interviews. How interesting it is to read what students have to say in their own words about vegetarianism and the environment.

Whether vegetarian or not, Veggie Revolution will help readers understand so much more than the merits of a vegetarian diet. It's a book that has the potential to change the world for the better!

5 out of 5 stars Viva la Revolution!.......2005-12-14

This is an engaging discussion of the environmental, ethical and nutritional benefits of eating lower on the food chain as portrayed through this family's personal journey of discovery. The two voices make this book especially interesting. I found myself wondering if a section was written by the scientist mother or the college student daughter. The writing style is conversational, sometimes funny; the material is well researched and offers a thorough look at the impact our food choices have on our future. Whether we choose to be vegetarian or not, we can (and maybe we must) make a difference!

              5 out of 5 stars A lively, well-researched, comprehensive resource .......2005-11-21

I have read many books on vegetarianism and the environment over the years, so I was pleasantly surprised that Veggie Revolution approaches these subjects in a new way -- very thought-provoking and well-documented but at the same time a fascinating read, never dry or boring. The authors are not just giving us information, they are telling a story! For one section of the book, the authors visited a number of farms of various sizes and types and interviewed farm workers, owners, and other professionals. The accounts of the farm visits are so vivid that I could imagine I was right there with the authors. Another thing that makes the book very interesting is that the authors put a human face on the farmers and other people who are quoted in the book; they do this by giving us a glimpse into their lives and their perspectives on the issues. It is impressive that the authors treat all of them with respect and consideration, whether the authors share their values and perspectives or not. All through the book the authors use a conversational tone that I found very engaging -- they are not talking down to me, but sharing important information as one would with a friend.

The nutritional information is quite solid. I have learned a ton about nutrition over the past 35 years, as well as having been a vegetarian for the past 17 years, and I can say with assurance that the nutritional information in this book is right on the mark.

The recipes are great! I especially like how the recipes can be made with ingredients that are readily available: most of them I already have in my pantry or refrigerator, and any that I don't have are readily available at my local grocery or farmer's market. The directions are easy to follow, and having options and notes on the recipes is very helpful.

Throughout the book, the authors make a solid case for improving our diets as well as for supporting local farmers and working on all levels to take care of the earth. I strongly recommend Veggie Revolution for anyone who is not afraid to learn the truth about where our food comes from, how this impacts our lives and the future of the planet we live on, and what we can do to improve the situation both personally and globally.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, honest, and thorough.......2005-11-14

My husband picked up this book for our 17-year-old daughter who declared herself vegan in April. We had been having a hard time coming up with family meals that would satisfy everyone, but the recipes in this book have pleased even my picky 11-year-old. I've ended up reading the rest of it as well, and found it really interesting. The informational chapters are all too convincing - my husband and I are cutting back our meat intake as well. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in vegetarianism or who is trying to understand a family member's choice. It's bolstered my daughter with new arguments and left us all better informed. I'm buying it for my sister-in-law for Christmas.

              5 out of 5 stars Very readable!.......2005-11-11

Veggie Revolution reads less like research and more like a personal journey to understand the meat industry, how it affects the animals, the environment, our communities and our health. It is full of helpful advice to readers who want to make a difference. I especially enjoyed the alternating voices of the mother/daughter authors as they shared their experiences and choices about food. Good section on vegetarian nutrition and cooking for the beginner.

A cutting-edge design book for small apartments, Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces introduces the reader to the joys of small space living, whether in simple studios, tiny one-bedrooms, or more complex arrangements where two small rooms or studios are joined to form a larger but still compact living area.

Studio Apartments examines in detail how more than twenty architects have created remarkably refined and varied living spaces within small confines. A master bedroom can be carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then concealed behind a frosted-glass wall. A kitchen can evolve from a closet. A single long room with windows only at its end can become a warm and inviting living space. Here are some of the freshest, most original approaches to creating a real home within spaces smaller than 1,000 square feet, and in some cases less than 500 square feet.

The twenty-four beautifully photographed apartments are presented complete with floor plans, gorgeous before and after photographs, and clear text that leads the reader through the design process and highlights the "big idea" that makes each apartment distinctive.

With Studio Apartments, an apartment dweller with an eye for style can transform their dreams into reality. In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.

Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. All of the spaces shown except one(Which also happens to be the only one under 800 sq ft) are very modern. Over all the pictures and layouts were nice, but to me kind of cold. I think it mentions casual modern, didn't see too much of that! If you like looking at ultra modern and expensive, larger than 1000 sq ft lofts, then buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Modern ideas for small and nice spaces.......2005-02-12

I thought the styles and ideas are wonderful, if you have modern taste with creative resources to pay for the remodeling of your studio apartment. Granted, most the apartments displayed were from individual that could afford to spend a good sum of money to remodel, however, I was able to get good ideas to re-decorate my studio apartment in South Beach (Miami Beach, Florida). The benefit to buying this book was that I did not have to buy 10-20 Architecture magazines in order to acquire ideas. I was able to duplicate a bath room in this book, without "breaking the bank"-if you have the time to research and compare costs.

For example, I shopped on E-bay(vessels sinks/best prices for modern fixtures and sinks: www.aquaimports.com), Home Depot(only the bath tub)and "leg work" for the bathroom tiles (Modern little colorful tiles) (Spanish Tiles Corp, located in Miami, Fl)-called many contractors. Please remember before starting any project, check with your buildings and local zoning requirements, to under-go the projects seen in this book. If you are wondering, no I am not rich, but I did "cash in" my 401K in order to buy the apartment and remodel it, it was better than leaving it in the "stock market."

Okay, maybe I'm biased or old-fashioned or both, but I don't find the apartments shown in BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL SPACES-STUDIO APARTMENTS attractive. The authors are both men with a great deal of knowledge about design, and I am sure their ideas will appeal mostly to men.

The examples shown are minimalist, modern, angular, and seem to belong to hard-working types who drop in only to sleep. For the most part these apartments are lacking in color which is the single most important element in decorating as far as I am concerned. Although the authors show some colorful ideas in their section on "cozy" apartments, for the most part their idea of making a place more homey seems to be adding books on shelves, chunky ashtrays, and sports trophies. In addition to cold, angular furniture and clunky "knickknacks", the minimalist rooms are often without curtains and/or have walls that are downright stark. One idea of "lightening" shows a curtain with a "porthole" in it that allows one to "look out" at the view.

If you're a guy looking for a book on how to decorate an appartment with a modernist "masculine" look this may be the book for you. One other note: the book was printed in China and the photographs looks like those in 1950s era books even though the publication date is 2000.

This is one of my favorite design books. I notice some other reviewers have complained that the apartments shown in this book are beyond their budget (alas, mine too). However, the concepts can be applied with less spendy solutions, and let's face it: a book filled with photos of ordinary spaces would lack the magic that this book possesses and would inspire fewer people (if any) to dream about their own space.

Excellent combinations of photos and drawings to show off the features of these fantastic units. Before and after plans illustrate how design potentials can be optimized and achieved...

With its well-illustrated identity case studies, Catharine Fishel's Redesigning Identity reinforces the importance of identity design as an essential corporate resource during times of strategic change. The multitude of reasons for redesigning identities is neatly categorized into five types of business scenarios that make up the chapters of the book: repositioning, modernizing, managing change, promoting growth, and starting over. Each chapter contains five cases, augmented by step-by-step outlines to illustrate the development of identity designs. Redesigning Identity offers revealing descriptions of designers' experiences. In each case, we are given real-life, behind-the-scenes insight into the before, middle' and after of each redesign. This approach gives the reader a sense of expectation and of surprise as the new design is revealed in each case.

The book's main premise is that an identity-regardless of why it is being changed-should be a reflection of a company's inner self. The companies featured will be familiar to designers the world over, and some of their design briefs will seem just as familiar-for instance, Polaroid's order for the redesign of its electronic imaging identity: Rework this, but don't change a thing! The diversity and challenge of identity design are revealed through the case studies, which include examples of both large and small enterprises and international as well as regional design consultants. Landor's work for Canadian Airlines, for instance, maintains the visual equity of CA's old identity while repositioning the airline with a dynamic visual identity that helps attract savvy business travelers. The work of design firm Dogstar for recruitment company Heavy Talent is shown with extensive background sketches providing a reminder of the craft of design-something all too often forgotten in the computerized design world of today. Other well-researched and amply illustrated examples include Coca-Cola, Steel Reserve Lager, Eagle Star, China Youth Press, and Nando's restaurants.

I am sure that this book will offer young designers useful guidelines for the identity design process and provide more experienced consultants with reminders of best practices for identity design. For design creatives, design managers, marketing managers, and others, Fishel's entertaining and informative book is an excellent view of identity design.

It embraces productions from around the world, with a nice spot on mockups, preliminary studies, skecthes drawn on the edge of newspapers... A nice way to learn when and where big ideas for big companies can come from. A singular book, worths its price.

This title arrived on the shelves not that long before the official Iron Maiden biography, Run To The Hills, was published, and the differences between the two are naturally obvious. Whereas RTTH author Mick Wall had direct access to all present, and many past, Maiden members, the authors of Infinite Dreams had to make do with scouring press clippings, newspapers and magazines (and, daresay, their memories) to source this slender volume.

And they do an admirable job, although they do opinionate more than you may expect for a biography, and that gives the book more of an 'essay on Maiden' feel to it - refreshing in itself, tho unfortunately not entirely unbiased as you may desire.

If you had the choice between this and the official bio, go for the official. However, to get a slice of history, which - thanks to the quotes culled from years of interviews - Infinite Dreams is a winner.
