Book Description
Set on a fictional Caribbean island during World War II and in modern-day Vancouver, He Drown She in the Sea is the spellbinding story of two childhood friends reunited late in life. As children, Rose Sangha and her housekeeper's son, Harry, are inseparable, blissfully unaware of the subtleties of class hierarchy until the night Harry is banished from the Sangha home. When Harry and Rose meet again in Canada years later, the gulf separating them is not so apparent. They have a life-affirming affair and Rose dares to reroute their destinies. This is a haunting, sensuous, and suspenseful story about love against all odds, and the sacrifice and euphoria that come with defying the life one is born into.

Simply Beautiful.......2007-08-20
This novel is sweet and captivating. The story is well written with prose that is almost lyrical. The portrayal of the fictional Guanagaspar gives a vivid and well researched picture of Trinidad in the early twentieth century. This is truly West Indian literature at its best.
Voted Best New Author 2005.......2006-03-09

Book Description
....embedded in the trunk of the scion of the godtree, it contains the essence of the maddest of the Ten Who Were Taken....The Dominator. Defeated by the Lady and cast from this world, all that was left of him was a foul trace of lingering evil. But the graveyard that was once the Barrowland contains more secrets than dead. All who would possess the power of the Dominator are drawn to the spike. A foolhardy band of thieves is the first to reach it, and a rapacious and malign spirit is unleashed on an unwary world. The forces gather, sides are drawn, and mortal men can only die as the Dark Lords battle for domination.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
No tv in the world that these guys inhabit. If there was, and they had seen a few B horror movies, they would never, ever, ever have contemplated what they did in a sheer fit of idiocy. The rest of the book is the bad things that happen to them afterwards. Mostly obvious to us, and somewhat amusing. Plus some Darling and her entourage, and what happens to them.
An entertaining romp in the Black Company universe, but which cuts some corners in terms of characterization and plot.......2006-10-28
An enjoyable and dark read, but I'm not sure I was left convinced by the characterization of Raven (not as three dimensional as in previous books), Philodendron Case (didn't match the nervous kid we previously met), and Smeds Stahl (transformation a la Marron Shed a bit repetitive). Still, it was a highly engaging read and brought the Book of the North to a nice close. Nota bene: those who haven't read the preceding books in this series will want to check them out first.
In Trouble Again.......2006-08-06
Glen Cook wrote The Silver Spike to resolve many of the loose ends that are left after the conclusion of The White Rose. With the final battle against the Dominator done, and the Black Company headed south to find Khatovar, there is one more story to tell. Darling, Silent, Raven, and a small handful of others are left behind to go their varied ways. Cook takes time out from the big story to make this one detour into the fate of those left behind.
Raven, rejected by Darling and at loose ends, takes up with Philodendron Case and goes of wandering and settles into the life of a broken alcoholic. It is only gradually that Case pulls him together. But Raven's inability to face emotional realities handicaps him at every turn. Darling and Silent return to their underground retreat and the crazy cast of animals and vegetables that haunt the desert around them. For them, the rebellion has yet to end. And Bomanz, the wizard who set many of these events into motion, has left the Barrowland to practice being unnoticeable in the city of Oar.
But things aren't as quiet as they should be. A sapling of the tree god's line guards the silver spike that holds the evil remains of the Dominator's spirit. But four desperate men decide to steal the spike and sell it to the highest bidder. And ToadKiller Dog works his own mischief, digging up Limper's head and bringing the worst of the ten who were taken. In a deadly moment the spike is freed from its prison, and all these people are drawn together for one last battle over the fate of the world.
This is actually one of Cook's best stories in the series. Terse, with a lot of action and twists, it brings the first three volumes to a satisfactory conclusion. On the way it offers insights into characters that, despite their importance, never quite took center stage in the Black Company stories. These first four volumes of the Black Company series are essentially fantasy tragic-comedy and The Silver Spike is no exception, bleak and wry at the same time, with the occasional moment of hope to keep the reader alert.
Weak epilogue, but isn't that the norm?.......2006-05-30
I am giving this 3 instead of 2 stars since it is an epilogue, which almost invariably means a less intense story/plot than the main story's resolution provided. Even Tolkien noted this when discussing the follow-up story to the resolution of LOTR he saw no point in actually writing, and apparently for that reason.
Contrary to other reviews, Croaker, the Lady, goblin/one-eye are not in this novel. I have read that their events in the time-frame of this novel are in another novel he subsequently wrote.
The storyline is reasonably entertaining, though it is hard to get much dramatic intensity out of the main conflict if you are familiar with the story to date. I am not going to do spoilers in this review.
Disappointing attempt to tie up loose ends.......2006-01-31
First, I dislike the fact that Cook felt the need to tell the story through Case's "journal". This works well for the Black Company series being told by the Annalist, but in this case I found it unnecessary.
My second complaint is the convenient way this concludes. It seems Cook took the easy way out. It's one thing to bring closure to plot lines of characters such as Raven, Silent, Darling and the other company folks that went their way. It's another thing to go through the novel and additional character development just to end in the last few pages with "we had to kill him, he gave his life for his love, they died too, and we lived happily ever after."
My last complaint is with the poor editing I have found so far in all the Black Company novels. There is no excuse for misspelling the name of a major character in the book, just because it still passes spell check.
While this comes across as highly critical. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The story is very engaging and character development of these individuals outside The Black Company helps add dimension while previously they may come across as rather one dimensional. The book lays the groundwork for the survival of other Taken, and how hard they really are to eliminate.
Overall:
Read the book quickly, overlook the disappointing ending, movee onto Shadow Games: The Fourth Chronicle of the Black Company.

A haggadah for our time.......2003-02-21
This is the perfect haggadah for our seder--a truly inspired work! The poetry is clear and easy to read and the prose is poetic. _Haggadah_ reminds us of our ancestors' struggles for liberation and calls on us to resist our contemporary pharaohs.
Celebrates freedom.......2003-02-21
I'm wondering if the previous reviewer was even reading the same book. There's nothing man-hating about it! I loved it. It's a haggadah that celebrates men, women, EVERYBODY resisting the Pharaoh, in whatever guise, and coming up out of Egypt, wherever that may be at the moment. Passionate, feminist, liberating, yes! Man-hating? no.
Man-Hating Screed.......2000-11-07
What I had hoped for when I ordered this was a Hagaddah that was egalitarian and that celebrated the value of women and their contributions as WELL as those of men. What I had not expected was a text to be used to vent spleen against men. One passage reads something like this: "While the Jews were in bondage in Egypt for 400 years, women have been in bondage for 4000 years!"Various passages decry everything from female circumcision to wifebeating, with the finger steadily pointed at male terrorists/perpetrators. While no one can fault the legitimacy of these complaints against some, even MANY men, unless this is what Passover is about for you, this is NOT your Hagaddah. And unless you feel male guilt is universal, and are willing to turn the Passover table into a time to vent these accusations, and to make them, by implication, even against the men in your life whom you've invited to sit at your table, this is not your Hagaddah. This is an angry book by those who, evidently, cannot see men as lovers or friends or good companions,or, in general, as potentially benign. To use it at my own seder would have been a disservice to the wonderfully kind, smart, funny man who loves me, stands with me, and is my best friend.
A powerful, passionate book.......2000-03-03
Imagine a beautiful, powerful, universally relevant haggadah rooted in tradition--a socially conscious, joyfully feminist, poetic hagaddah firmly based in the original Hebrew texts. This is that book.
Passover is one of the most important Jewish holidays. The seder--something like a highly ritualized Thanksgiving gathering and dinner--is the celebration and retelling of the story of the exodus from Egypt. The hagaddah is the little book the participants use to follow through the steps of the seder.
The seder where this hagaddah is used will keep the attention of all the participants, engaging their conscience and their emotions. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the seder's poetry, meaning, and relevance to our lives here and now.
A seder treat for "the rest of us".......1999-12-03
I go through such a dither every Passover cutting and pasting appropriate passages from the standard-issue Haggadahs. Now Martha Shelley has done the job for me. Her poetic Haggadah steeped in Jewish, humanist, and feminist traditions is just what I've longed for. It's totally relevant and totally charming, so the kids won't fall asleep and the adults won't get bored before we get to the dinner!

So That's How the Stove Works.......2001-08-21
I've been out of college for a few years and I'm still using this book. It was actually a gift... and a life-saver! If you're prone to toaster fires, have actually poisoned someone (accidently) and keep a chisel next to your can opener, yes, you do need this. And yes, it really will help. Parents will be in awe of your culinary talent, and you can tell them that you're not really spending all of your money on beer, but on cooking lessons!
Easy to follow, quick, and tasty recipes........1999-02-22
I recommend this book to anyone who would like to spend less time reading the recipe and more time actually cooking it.
Book Description
Among the great designers at Herman Miller in the 1950s and 1960s, Alexander Girard enhanced Eames' and Nelson's furniture with innovative textiles. As head of Herman Miller's Textile Division since it was formed in 1952, he designed some of the most colorful and exciting fabrics available anywhere. He also designed the 25-piece Girard Group of modern furniture, and the 40-item series of Environmental Enrichment Panels for Action Office 2. Girard's unmatched folk art collection adorned Herman Miller buildings, filled their Textiles & Objects Shop in New York, and over 100,000 items made up the famous Girard Foundation. His acclaimed work as an interior designer and architect and his remarkable textiles for Herman Miller make Girard one of the legendary designers of the twentieth century. With over 400 mostly color photographs of his textile and wallpaper designs, all of the EE panels and furniture, plus detailed text, timeline, and an updated value guide, this book is a comprehensive view of Girard's work at Herman Miller, and a must for anyone interested in mid-century design of textiles, interiors, or graphics.

Girard's Fabrics Were Not All He Did.........2000-06-10
This is a great book. Page after page of Girard's designs. Color and black and white photos. Few people know that, aside from textiles, Alexander Girard was responsible for some of Herman Miller's earliest modern furniture. His furniture design are also outlined in this book.

The BEST Costuming Book You'll Ever Own.......2001-02-08
I have been using this book for years to help with designing costumes for various Community Theatres and Madrigal Groups. Though the costumes themselves are English, they give you a wonderful idea of what was popular for the elite from every western country during a wide range of periods. The best part of this book is the fact that you can tell they did their research. From the way people changed their movement, to the undergarments that were needed to support the clothing, to how they were decorated, I could go on for another page. It is the perfect resource for anyone who designs for a living or just for fun.
excellent overview of English court dress evolution.......2000-06-08
In the words of the authors, "Fashion is the translation of the wearer's personality into the language of clothes," and this volume is a comprehensive overview of the changes in the ideal personality as reflected in the dress of English court dressers, interpreted through secondary sources (paintings, prints, carvings, sculptures and manuscript drawings) during the reign of 31 English monarchs. For each of 56 eras in fashion, clear and detailed B/W drawings (by Hill) of male and female adult dress are presented with a thorough overview (by Bucknell) of general characteristics of the fashion including headware, shoes, and undergarments and a summary of trends in decoration, accessories, movement for both genders, padding and restriction, and typical fabrics and colors. For all illustrated outerwear garments, 1/8" scale pattern shapes (by Bucknell) are provided as a base for adaptation for those interested in re=creation, and are simplified and presented without seam allowances or construction notes. No information is given on construction of foundation garments (corsets, hoops, panniers, padding) which are necessary for many of the garments shown. The book is intended to assist theater designers, cutters, illustrators, costume history drudents, and actors in achieving an accurate silhouette for a given period, and I would say it amply fulfills this goal. Some construction suggestions for theater use are included but nothing on the level of a mainstream fashion pattern, so this book should not be a sole resource for an average home sewer contemplating a period halloween costume. Minimal illustration of placement of details such as pleats, pockets, buttonholes or casings. Patterns have no notches or facing pieces, merely reference letters to mark attachment points on complex constructions. No garments beyond English court dress are covered, so don't look here for Chinese Imperial fashion or Eastern European peasant garb. I found "the big pink book" at a Ren Faire vendors' row and have enjoyed the thoughtful consideration of fashions from the past on many occasions, including construction of a 1550's/1560's era court gown for my wedding. It was particularly helpful to examine the outline of pattern shapes for sleeves and skirts that have not been in fashion for centuries, particularly for the very complex shapes such as bustles, layered flounces, intricate pleating, and extensive boning or wiring. As a professional costumer, I would love to see an index added that might allow readers to review what eras were associated with a particular element of fashion (for example: velvety fabrics, circular hoops, false buttonholes, use of bows as decoration, pastel colors, or very restrictive skirts) but this is minor and the book is quite functional sans index. All in all, a fine and indispensable reference in my library.
A valuable, one-of-a kind resource.......2000-01-25
This book was the primary text in a costume history course I took in college, and it still stands out among the many costume books I've since accumulated as one of the most helpful. For those concentrating on a particular period who want to see lots of variations within that period--for example, those who are concerned with the difference between an 1853 sleeve and an 1854 sleeve--this is not for them: it depicts the basic style of each period and in written text describes the popular fabrics, trends, and design variations. As an overview that shows what people were wearing during the reign of every English monarch from 1066 to 1930, it is unsurpassed. Where other costume books tend to be vague and skimpy on pre-16th-century styles, this text clearly indicates what year a style belongs to and does not lump together a few drawings as examples of "medieval dress." The book includes patterns for every major garment pictured, but these, as other reviewers have noted, are not for novices. All in all, this is a wonderful book for a variety of purposes.
Beyond the Basics but Not for a Novice ..........1999-09-14
This book has some FABULOUS ideas and variations, but the patterns are all 1/8th scale and there is NO detail as to what goes with what (directions for sewing) or even suggestions for fabric. For designs and ideas, especially for SCA and Renaissance, its Faboo, but you need to have a background in costuming or at least some serious sewing to make this stuff look good. Definitely requires skills beyond the basics. SIMPLICITY it is not = (

Evolution of Fashion: Pattern and Cut from 1066-1930.......2001-02-24
This book is an excellent aid to stage costume design in that both a picture of the finished design and a basic pattern is provided for each era featured. There is also a detailed description of the fashion of each time, as well as interesting comments on the restrictions each design placed on the wearer. All items of the outfit are addressed including accessories and hairstyles. The fashions are all British with the respective monarch of each period as the header for each page. The drawings are all black and white and the patterns appear a bit compilcated for a beginner to dressmaking. The patterns are mostly at a 1/8:1" scale and supports such as a crinoline design are included rendering the possibility for all patterns to be executed into finish outfits. The book also lists all its source material so further research is possible, if required, into all of the outfits featured. The book fulfils its title in that it provides an overview of the developement of British fashion up to 1930, and is an interesting read at the same time. Its provision of patterns tempts the execution of the garments which include a Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Victoria costumes.

The best one I could find.......2007-06-01
This book gave me some practical guidance for planning out how to live my life in a single, not-so-big room. After reading this, I lost all my fears of living in a studio and felt prepared to live in one.
PACKED with ideas.......2005-03-06
This is the most useful and realistic book I have seen on studio decorating. Ms. Katz's book is a lot like a great studio apartment: functional, beautiful, and just crammed with good stuff. I have rarely seen such idea density. In particular, the book collects a lot of innovative multi-function and compact furniture. I only wish it were more specific on where to buy some of the pictured items. For example, I have searched the internet for a loveseat whose arms fold down to turn into a single bed, but no internet retailer seems to carry that type of sofabed.
False Advertising.......2004-08-29
Not the book to use for ideas on true one-room small space living...let alone useful for people that need to operate on a budget.
One of the most practical books in the genre ..........2002-07-25
Most of the books on this topic are rather unrealistic and assume that you are going to drop thousands into reconstructing an apartment you don't even have a long-term lease on. This book seems to have many more practical ideas and better yet, it provides a list of suppliers as well. Also provides some hints on painting the walls and ceilings different shades of the same color to make the room appear larger. Generally, I found this the most practical book of the genre, but everyone's situation is unique and what works for one person may not be right for everyone. There are some good pictures and ideas in this book that may get you thinking about some of your own ideas.
Best book on the subject I've ever read.......2002-03-13
For the past three years I've been visiting local bookstores on at least a weekly basis - including chain outlets, used bookstores, and shops that specialize in books on design - looking for books that would give me ideas about what I could do with my tiny studio apartment (on a reasonable budget). Although targeted more toward loft dwellers, this is still unquestionably the best book on the subject of living in small spaces that I've found. Its suggestions range from the practical to the extravagant and from cheap to costly, but all of them are presented in a richly visual way that should give any reasonably creative person a lot of good ideas. Not only are several different layouts presented in depth, but also a small catalog of innovative furnishings (from miniature dishwashers to beds that slide under raised seating platforms) and construction materials are provided. The book also walks the reader through drawing a blueprint of your room and potential furnishing layouts, which is a fantastic way to force even less-than-inventive souls (like me!) to reexamine how they're utilizing limited space and guide them toward coming up with novel solutions they would never have considered before.
While I've picked up valuable tips browsing dozens of other books dealing with this subject, this is the only one of those books I've bothered to buy. It's a reference point I find myself going back to again and again as I slowly rearrange and redecorate my living space into something not only more functional but also far more attractive. I can't believe the publisher allowed this one to go out of print!
