5 out of 5 stars Back in print! Hurrah! Long overdue!.......2005-12-04

Thank Heaven this book is back in print! I cherish my 1927 Vanguard Press edition--a legacy from my dad--but have been scandalized that it's out of print and frustrated in efforts to buy copies for friends.

I've made do with "Wood Works", ed. Edwin Bingham and Tim Barnes, Oregon State University Press, ISBN 0870713973 which is an interesting overview of his work--but it only has four of his "Heavenly Discourse" pieces, and, a), that's not enough, and b), frankly, his other stuff doesn't really grab me. My Amazon reader review of "Wood Works" was entitled "Wish they would just reprint 'Heavenly Discourse.'" And now someone has!

"Heavenly Discourse" is written in the form of plays or discussions between such characters as God, Jesus, Mark Twain, Tom Paine, Robert Ingersoll, Billy Sunday, and Theodore Roosevelt. Politically radical, the essays ridicule militarism, prudery, and religious intolerance. Ten of them were originally written for and published in Max Eastman's radical magazine, _The Masses_, the first of them in 1914. (Following passage of the Espionage Act of 1917, _The Masses_ was suppressed by the U. S. government on the grounds that it was detrimental to the war effort).

I would have liked to have be able to give copies of _Heavenly Discourse_ to friends a couple of years ago. Here are two snippets. From them, you should be able to determine whether or not this is your kind of book.

From "A Pacifist enters Heaven-in bits:"

BATTERED SOUL: I'm a pacifist.
GOD: A what?
BATTERED SOUL: A pacifist. I believe in Jesus and peace.
GOD: So you are a Christian?
BATTERED SOUL: O, no. I really do believe in peace.

From a discourse on "Preparedness in Heaven", in which God decides to prepare for a war against Satan.

GABRIEL: I am afraid Heaven won't stand for that. Jesus has preached peace too long.

GOD: ...We must first frighten them, fill them with fear, then with hate. For example, headlines in the Heavenly Herald: "Horrible Atrocities of Satan," "Make the Cosmos Safe for Jesus," "Satan Threatens Your Halos," "Satan Disembowels a Cherub," "Satan Rapes the Ten Foolish Virgins," and so on...

GABRIEL: But none of this will be true.

GOD: True? Of course, it won't. Don't be a fool, Gabriel. You can't work up a war-preparedness, I mean-on the truth. This is war-I mean preparedness-and we simply must lie-the more horrible the lies the better.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant Satire, as powerful today as when it was written.......2005-10-18

Some satires loose their punch with age. Not so "Heavenly Discourse". From the starting page in which Jesus asks God, "Are we Jewish?" to the ending pages when God decrees that those who die stupidly may not enter Heaven... just before WW I breaks out, the bite never stops.

My grandmother, a deeply religious woman introduced me to this work. It is difficult to find a book which satirizes religion without ever violating the bonds of reverence and good taste. I might even have said "impossible" had I not read "Heavenly Discourse". This book is quite religious, but it has little room for sanctimoniousness, and thus, it has as much to offer the deeply religious as the skeptical. And it is funny. Not at the expense of religion, not even at the expense of the religious, but only at the expense of foolishness.

An absolute delight! I recommend it highly!

                    Book Description

The original Ramayana—a classic tale of war between absolute Good and Evil—was written 3,000 years ago by Valmiki, a reformed thief-turned-sage. Now, with breathtaking imagination, Indian novelist Ashok K. Banker has recreated this epic tale for modern readers everywhere. The invasion has begun, and the bestial demon hordes roar towards Ayodhya. If Ayodhya falls, then all mortals fall. Rama must go to Mithila—a city lying directly in the path of destruction. There, a small band of heroes plan a valiant stand against the advancing armies of darkness. But Lanka's forces are nearly boundless and have swept all before them. For at the head of the demon tide rides Rama's nemesis, a terrible slayer of souls—the demonlord Ravana.

                    3 out of 5 stars Charming, but............2007-09-24

Mr. Banker is an exceptional story-teller, an artist with words and has wonderful imagination. But, he takes liberties with the original Ramayana as written by Valmiki. It makes for a good read; I liked Banker's Sita and her spunk much more than the traditional one. She comes across as a strong minded girl-woman who tried to take her Destiny in her own hands. Some of the words he uses to convey regional/ ethnic flavor were jarring as the words have Urdu/Hindi base and not Sankrit. So the effect that the saga is from aeons ago is destroyed!
I loved seeing Kaikeyi in a completely different light; however I'm puzzled why he needed to make her completely wanton- consorting with strangers? with the palace guards?
Manthara and her witchcraft and spellbinding. As also her power over Kaikeyi.
A good book overall. With new thoughts and interpretations of the original.

4 out of 5 stars Full of action, intrigue, and fascinating characters.......2007-09-01

The only possible flaw in this book is not a problem with the book itself, or the writer. The problem is that characters who are perfect are inherently boring. (My mind leaps to those movies with Jesus gazing piously into heaven, benevolently healing everyone, gently smoothing away discord among the disciples -- never frowning, never raising his voice, never doing anything INTERESTING, dammit!)

Rama, the hero of this epic, is always pious, always obedient to his guru, and fulfills the dharma of his caste flawlessly and without hesitation, with no thought for self. He doesn't even feel the stirrings of more-than-brotherly feeling toward Sita his bride until AFTER he's won her hand.

But it's not really as bad as it sounds; Banker does a good job creating moments of questioning and decision, where Rama must test himself. Of course, most of those moments are undone a bit, when the sage Vishwamitra casually mentions, "Of course, I knew before the test began that the outcome was inevitable." Still, Rama is much more interesting in this book than he was in the first one. He has personality and character. And his brother Lakshman becomes more than a mere follower, but an individual in his own right.

I really liked the first book (Prince of Ayodhya), but enjoyed Siege of Mithila even more. There was a lot of action, and by now we know all the major players so well that we care about them a great deal. Can Third Queen Sumitra possibly get out of her predicament? Is Captain Bejoo making his last stand, riding out against the Asura army before the gates of Mithila? Did Rama, with his final act, truly do the horrible and devastating thing to his own people that it sounds like he did, and how can he possibly justify it??

I am really, really looking forward to getting my hands on Demons of Chitrakut, to find out what happens next!

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ THE INDIAN EDITIONS INSTEAD.......2007-07-10

If you are reading my Ramayana series, then I gently urge and request you to please not buy the UK or US editions, even if they're available at bargain prices. Which they probably are, since the publishers there have more or less put the books out of print, due to a lack of interest by non-Indian readers.

The Indian editions are the definitive editions of my work, containing a lengthy Introduction by me titled 'Retelling the Ramayana', which provides an essential perspective on the work, the final versions of all the books--including some small but significant changes, particularly in some book endings--no glossary, thank God, and are generally the best-edited, designed and published versions, in my opinion at least. In short, they're the Author's Preferred Edition, particularly the new hardcover omnibus editions, which represent the story in the way I had originally intended and are truly sumptuous to hold (and behold). Also, significantly, they aren't packaged as 'Fantasy' or 'SF' like the firang ones, which is a ridiculously transparent attempt at cashing in on the commercial success of the fantasy genre a la LoTR and Harry Potter. Please, people, my Ramayana series is a retelling of an epic, and that's exactly what it should be called, 'Epic'. I'd venture to call it 'Itihasa', but even Mythology, which is the label Penguin uses for the books here in India, is acceptable. But certainly not Fantasy as in one of the ubiquitous Tolkien rip-offs that are churned out in droves by western publishers, or even SF, both genres that can sometimes be wonderful in their own right, but are totally inappropriate in the context of an epic that pre-dates Tolkien by some thousands of years, and the entire tradition of western literature as well!

Frankly, I feel so strongly about this that I'd even go so far as to say, if you can't get the Indian editions, then don't read the books! That's why I'm currently in the process of re-acquiring the rights to the US and UK editions and they will soon be out of print everywhere but India. Which is how it ought to be: this is a quintessentially Indian story, written by a contemporary Indian for other contemporary Indians to read. And the Indian editions are really the only way to go.

                    3 out of 5 stars actually 3.5 stars.......2007-05-31

I have been looking for an English version of the Ramayana with lot of intricate detail. This series by Ashok Banker certainly provides a fair amount of detail.

However, to me it was not a 5 star work or even 4 star. The books are written in pulp style and while the books are page turners they did not have an impact on how I think about the Ramayana.

I think Rama's portrayal as a flesh and blood human was one of the strengths of this version. In addition, I really liked Sita's character in this book (much more than the more traditional versions of the Ramayana that I have read).

To me the biggest flaw in this version was that not enough justice was done to Ravana's character and that he comes off looking a little too much like Voldemort from Harry Potter (I wonder when Banker started writing these books). In the original Ramayana, Ravana's character really captures one's imagination. That said, these books are a lot more engaging than the Harry Potter series (and also the Lord of the Rings).

I was also a little annoyed by the use of some Urdu words through the text (e.g. Wafadar). In the context of the Ramayana, these words make no sense and it would have been far more powerful to have actually used Sanskrit equivalents.

On the whole though, this is an engaging book (and series) with some notable flaws but is surely worth a read for Ramayana fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Prince of Ayodhya!.......2006-05-24

This book was awesome! I have never read anything like it! Banker's Ramayana is by far the most entertaining adaptation that I have read of the epic series. Everything is on a grand, gargantuan scale. The characters are rich and vivid in description. This book is so great, words fail to capture its greatness! Get this book, open to the first page, and prepare to be immersed in one of the best religious/fantasy books I have ever read!

I would agree that this book was not as good as the first Demonspawn, but I feel it still had a lot to offer. The last three stories were worth the price of the book. Laura Baumbaugh wrote several great stories and the last story was very good also. I think the problem with the first few stories is that they tended to be too wordy(not enough action, boring) and/or out of character. But, all in all, I still enjoyed the last few stories enough not to regret buying the book.

Unlike the original Demon Spawn I found little in this book to hold my attention. To my immense disappointment I found the stories both dull and lifeless. Being a keen fan of the movie I also found the way in which Simon and Joe had been characterised in one particular story just didn't ring true.

I was also extremely dismayed to find an extremely high proportion of both grammatical and spelling errors.

_It is my belief that all serious students of the esoteric will eventually be drawn to the Philosophia Perennis. How could they not? It is the golden thread that runs through every path of real worth- and Frithjof Schuon was its greatest expositor in the modern age.

_I mean it when I say that if I could have but one book on a desert island or solitary cell it would be this one. After all, Schuon himself approved this volume as truly representing the core of his essential thought. My next choice would be his entire collected works, but they run to over twenty volumes. He is more easily understood than Guenon, but without sacrificing any of the profound content.

_What is the Philosophia Perennis? It is the metaphysical truth which has no beginning, and which remains the same in all expressions of wisdom. It is the esoteric core of all true religious traditions- recognized or not. It hinges on the truths innate in the human spirit and accessible in the pure Intellect. It is the way of the Gnostic, the pneumatic, and the theosopher- it is the way of Pythagoras and Plato. It is jnana. You see, Man's intelligence was made to know the Absolute and it is only the Absolute that man can know absolutely. Metaphysics is this knowledge. It is why we and our intellect exist. We are here to see things as they are- not as they appear (essence over form.) An intellect capable of this, but wasted on materialistic trivia is a cosmic tragedy.

_The book itself is divided into nine sections: 1) Religion and Revelation, 2) The Study of Religions, 3) The Nature of Reality, 4) Art and the Spiritual Significance of Beauty, 5) Man, 6) The Spiritual Life, 8) Eschatogy and the Afterlife, 8) Criticism of the Modern World, 9) Spiritual Impressions.

Note: This collection is unchanged in the 2005 edition. Schuon was consulted on the addition of further writings, but decided to let this collection stand as being truly representative of his essential thought.

The book is a good introduction to Schuon, providing a fairly detailed overview of the Swiss thinker's central ideas. Nasr, through his introduction, paves the way for the reader to better understand Schuon's extremely dense yet rich style. This is a great help on Nasr's part, since Schuon's unique style renders his writings difficult to break into. But once this apparent impenetrability is overcome, the reader will be dumbfounded by the depth and profundidty of Schuon's brilliant insights. Like any great thinker, this man has his deficencies, and sometimes they are blaring. But who said profundidity must be accompanied by infalibility?

As a former student at the California Culinary Academy, I had the privlidge of having Rosina Wilson as an instructor in wine appreciation. Learning much, and discovering that Ms. Wilson has an incredible palate and love for great food, much of which is shown in this little cookbook with GREAT BIG FLAVORS. The recipes are not intimidating and extremely easy to prepare. With great rewards when finished.

I purchased this book thinking it might help me build a mantel shelf and found it to be worthless. This book is an lengthy advertisement to try to sell mantels. I don't recommend it as one can purchase a magazine to view pretty pictures of mantels.

I'm an ole timey (senior citizen) fireplace builder for 51 years. This book was fun for me and is choice for learning secrets about a useful fireplace. Hey author, I like your classy and easy mantels and build some but I can't find any book anywhere that has a bunch of more complicated mantel plans that I can sharpen my beever teeth on. Help me anyone!! Good job on this book but please write a new one quick for us ole timey builders. I need pricey mantel ideas to put in my toolbox.

Me and my husband have bilt and remodeled since 1939. That's lots of work. I bought him this book which he says is the best. He likes it for the details about new fireplace types such as the gasless. He also got good ideas on easy mantels. Buy it for your own good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Homeowners Resource!.......2003-01-13

My wife and I recently bought a new house and wanted to install a fireplace. We knew little about fireplace technology or what manufacturers offered. I had no idea until I read this book that there were so many options. The book describes in detail not only the many options but how they work and whether they're appropriate for your particular fireplace. The book also gave us great inspiration with choosing a mantel design. The book contains several mantel designs and how to build each one. The beautiful photos and construction illustrations were very helpful when we built ours. The big fireplace suppliers are also noted in the book with lots of helpful photos of their offerings. For myself, the wealth of knowledge I gained about fireplaces was priceless and very easy to read! I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about adding a fireplace to your home or redesigning an existing one.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me a lot.......2003-01-13

I usually don't write book reviews but felt I should since I really disagee with the reviewers who gave this book one star. This book doesn't have any advertisements. It contains over 20 original mantel designs that my wife and I felt we could build from common materials. I am not an experienced craftsman, but this book helped me gain the confidence I needed to begin the project. We are quite pleased with the results. I built the "Oak Manor" mantel which was simple to build and was completed in a week of my spare time. Our friends can't believe how good it looks and I have loaned this book several times. The next fireplace I build I would like to be a ventless since this book answered all my technical questions and gave me several ideas on where and how to install various types of fieplaces. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about fireplaces and would like to build their own mantel.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR FANS OF THE SHOW.......2002-05-13

THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF INFO AND IS WELL WORTH READING. ADAM WEST TELLS SOME INTERESTING, UNIQUE AND HUMOROUS STORIES OF HIS LIFE, CAREER, AND TIME HE WAS ON THE SHOW. I FOUND HIS WRITING VERY WITTY, HUMOROUS AND WELL DONE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I HAVE IS THAT I HOPED IT WAS LONGER AND MORE DETAILED. ALSO THE PHOTOS ARE GRAINY AND OUT OF FOCUS. BUT FOR A TRIVIA AND NOSTALGIC TV WATCHER THIS IS A GOOD BOOK TO HAVE.
                                VERY RECOMMENDED.

3 out of 5 stars A WORTHY ATTEMPT FROM ADAM.......2001-12-13

Not the best celebrity book I've added to my collection, but not the worst. I'm giving it ***-plus because it appears to be an honest effort. I just wanted more meat and potatoes (read: interesting facts) about making the Batman series than the book offers. We hear about the other actors but it's mostly "Neil Hamilton (Comissioner Gordon) was very serious; Stafford Repp (Chief O'Hara) was a lot of fun..." I wanted some good solid stories about the production of this time capsule of a series, and while they might be dull and boring to Adam, they would have lent a lot of color to the book. I just ordered Burt Ward's book, which I already hear is a complete 180 from West's, and will have to compare the two. Make no mistake, I loved the series and was a Batman-aholic in the 1960s, like most of us, so I was really hoping for some golden chestnuts about Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Burgess Meredith and Vincent Price. West does, however, let us know exactly how he feels about Julie Newmar (and who wouldn't share his admiration of such a 'Living Doll'? ... those of you from the 60s will understand that reference). So-so, but I will take the effort to read it again someday, if that's an endorsement.

                                3 out of 5 stars POW !!! BAM !!! ZOW !!! with some reservations.......2001-06-08

Back to the Batcave is a definite "must read" for any fan of the classic 60's television series. This work details Adam West's early acting career as well as providing interesting anecdotes and behind the scene looks at what went on during the shooting of Batman. An added bonus is a 41 page annotated episode guide providing the Batfan with air dates, guest stars and plot synopsis'. Grainy photos, sloppy editing and a substandard print job kept this reader from assigning this book a 4 rating. In addition, some fans could probably do without reading the epilogue. West comes off as bitter (almost whining) about not being offered the lead in the 1989 Batman film. I, for one found it mildly embarrassing and depressing. It's my hope that should future editions be printed, this section will be rewritten.

                                5 out of 5 stars wow what a book!.......2000-07-29

Adam "Batman" West knows how to write! great job!
