There are, as the title says, one hundred brothers in Donald Antrim's novel. This sprawling fraternity has gathered in the family library for a dinner and over the course of a few hours, the author serves up sibling rivalry, revelry, and mayhem in meticulous, unflappable style.

For the most part, The Hundred Brothers skates along on the strength of its comic ingenuity. Yet Antrim has some serious points to make about masculine pride, vanity, and terror--not by invoking them directly, but by inflating them to monstrous (and mirthful) proportions. And the narrator's comments about his rampaging kin often have a larger, melancholic resonance to them. Indeed, when he points out "the complexities of our interdependence and the sorry indignities that pass as currency between us in lieu of gentler tender," he might be talking about any family--even one in the single-digit range.

Book Description

A comic novel by the critically acclaimed author of Elect Mr. Robinson for a Better World. Throughout the evening, the chaos grows into a complex web of conflicting memories, hurt feelings, rivalries, alliances, and shared awareness. 208 pp. Author tour. National publicity. 4 out of 5 stars The Hundred Brothers.......2004-07-22

Donald Antrim?s ability to capture the many facets of the human psyche is astounding. Every character comes complete with something of a synopsis of his experience or a tale of a major life event, which defines the character. Beyond the authors? genius the book is a cynically well-written story about the complications of life, and coping mechanisms. ?I crouched down and the dog came to me. It was a shame, really, that I had no doggy treats along with the morphine in my pockets. I said, like a true master, ?That?ll do, boy.? This book is funny as hell, read it, think and laugh, only if you like laughing though. If not, this book isn?t for you.

5 out of 5 stars Antrim's best, so far.......2004-06-29

Most reviewers seem to focus on whether or not this book exemplifies post-modernism and whether or not that's good or bad. Unfortunately, I've never been able to figure out what postmodernism is, so I can't help ya there.

All I know is Pynchon and Delillo just confuse me, Vollman makes me laugh but I can't figure out what the hell he's driving at, but Antrim just makes me feel good all over.

Maybe it's the way he introduces all 100 brothers, in order, in about 5 pages, and then blithely writes the rest of the book as if you're going to remember who they all are. Which is a good hook, because, who hasn't been to a social function where you get introduced to a few dozen people within 5 minutes, after which you're supposed to remember everybody?

Maybe I just identify with the hapless, socially retarded dope of a narrator who just wants everyone to get along but ends up, well, no spoilers, in a unique and singularly undignified situation.

But it's not simplistic comedy - it's a bit like one of those Borges stories where you think, "ok, this is gonna be a quick read, only 12 pages" and then you find it takes a good 2 hours to make a bit of sense of it.

Well, you could compare it to a lot of things, but that wouldn't do it justice, because the best part is, it just ain't quite like anything you've read before.

3 out of 5 stars 100 Brothers is not better than 4.......2004-02-20

What do you do when you can not write in depth about a subject or at least you can not depend on language to carry your work? You write a postmodern mess that carries the reader along on a wild joyride, and leaves the reader in the end with nothing but good entertainment.

This work exemplifies tendancies in contemporary fiction to not write literature as much as write anything that mocks it. If you can not write Literature, then take the necessary elements of literature(in this case plot and character) and stretch it to the extreme producing an original but utterly empty postmodern cartoon.

I give Mr. Antrim three stars for entertainment. Its a fun book. But not much else is there.

5 out of 5 stars Original.......2001-11-23

Donald Antrim is profoundly original, as he continues to take the novel to a new place in literature. Not always a easy read but always fun and full of insights. I do like 'The Verificationist' and 'The Elect Mr. Robinson' better, but as in all his books it is unlike any book one has ever read. Each brother gave me thoughts on myself my family and the world.I love his dark humor. I'm looking forward to his next book.

1 out of 5 stars Post-modern trash.......2001-11-01

If this is what post-modern lit is all about, I'd rather be a pre-classicist. This book is essentially one big chapter about a hundred brothers reuniting for a dinner. What follows is a series of squabbling between brothers that is at most incoherent. The prose is really bad, with exaggerations and flowery words (more like a Venus flytrap). Donald Antrim seems to have written the book in one night, because the events don't make sense. My advice is start with one brother, and go up from there. Leave this bin of mumbo jumbo for graduate students and intellectual snobs. Post-modernism is reserved for you after you're dead.

This Saga of the Renunciates, makes only any sense if read all togheter. Dismiss all those comments that say you can enter Darkover at any novel.
And this books are a proof of that. "Shattered" is a short novel, almost nothing realy important happens, is just an introduction for the characters. "Thendara" is long book about the lead roles, Lorne and Jael, and as all this saga, this is a story about two particular beings, and has no impact on big planetary scale, or in Darkover history. Altough very long, I found the books very adult oriented, and heartbroken, wich made me feel the troubles and sorrows of this two girls. I was amaze how Bradley managed to pull me inn with her view of the woman`s world. "Sorcery" on the other hand is an adventure driven story, and is very entertaining. (spoilers head) But the end is somehow dissapointing, more even so, considering that is the end of all the saga. It took some time to read them all, (one after the other, I might add) and I felt exausted at end, but somehow altough this is not best on Darkover, I end up missing those the girls.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and memorable...definitely worth your time.......2006-08-07

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book - I loved Mists of Avalon, but wasn't fond of the other Avalon books. I wanted to like Darkover, but the two other Darkover novels I read (Stormqueen and Hawkmistress) didn't appeal to me much.

And then I began The Shattered Chain.

It started off exactly as I'd feared it would - a band of Amazons (just...read the other reviews for technical details) walk into a town and are laughed and jeered at by the men and treated with greater hostility by the women. I thought at this point that the book would be full of "Woman Power" and show how strong these Independent Women had to be to exist on a world like Darkover.

But the novel quickly became something more than that. I felt that it greatly picked up when we were introduced to Magda, the Terran - because for the Terrans, men and women are pretty much equal. And this viewpoint GREATLY helped balance out the supressing Darkover views, and made them not just bearable, but interesting. The resulting main plotline between the Terrans and Darkover people, with the Amazons building the bridge between the two worlds...it was pretty awesome. And of course there's all the subplots, and the huge personal developments taking place within the two main characters: the Terran woman and the Amazon one.

This book has some good action scenes, but the major focus is definitely on the characters themselves, and their relationships to one another and the world. Normally I would stay away from something like that, but the Terran/Darkover worlds created here are so interesting that it's pretty much impossible to not be caught up in it.

It had great, memorable characters, a great plot, and scenes you'll remember for a long, long time. I'd say it's definitely worth a read for anybody who likes fantasy/sci-fi...and books in general.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Darkover trilogy!.......2005-10-16

I've read most of the Darkover series during the last five yrs. I started off with MZBs Avalon books & ended up hooked on the Darkover series.
In many the Darkover books the renunciates (free amazons) are mentioned, but usually not in much detail. It was wonderful to stumble upon a whole trilogy of books about them. They explain
how & why the group started, and how they worked out a way to marginally fit into the society by being of service to both Darkovans & Terrans. I thoroughly enjoyed this series & would highly recommend it to any MZB fan.

                    5 out of 5 stars More than a fantastic novel, a manifesto.......2005-07-28

I am an avid MZB fan and have read most of her novels, but the Darkover series is the closest to my heart and The Saga of the Renunciates stands above all. This novel is more than just a story, deconstructing femininity is a central part of this trilogy: as a reader I found myself pondering the same questions that trouble the women on Darkover and thinking that eventhough they are only sci-fi characters, their insigth would change a lot of women.

The first novel is about a group of mercenary warrior women who hire themselves out to Lady Rohana to rescue her cousin from the Dry Towns, a country where married women are kept in chains. Rohana's cousin never makes it but she does bring back Jaelle, her 12 year old niece and a very unconfortable awareness of the invisible chains she has fashioned for herself.

In the 2nd part we meet Magda and Peter, two Darkover-born Terranan and the best spies the Empire has on Cottman 4. Altough Magda is the better agent, as a woman there is not much she can do outside HQ. When Peter goes missing on a mission and his superiors have no plans to rescue him Magda disguises herself as an Amazon and goes looking for him. All goes well until she meets some real Amazons whose leader is none other than a grown up Jaelle.

The final chapter in this story is about a journey to a mythical city in the enormous mountains of Darkover where an all-knowing sisterhood of wise women is supposed to be hidden from all but those by whom they wish to be seen. Jaelle leaves everything behind for even a chance to get there and Magda has no choice but to follow.

This annual anthology series has become a science fiction institution, and deservedly so. Gardner Dozois, unquestionably one of the field's finest editors, has a sharp eye when it comes to selecting the best short stories published in the genre, whether they come from his own magazine Asimov's Science Fiction or obscure, small-press zines. This year's picks include authors such as Gregory Benford, Michael Swanwick, Bruce Sterling, Charles Sheffield, and Steven Baxter. Those interested in the professional side of science fiction will find Dozois's annual summation--a sort of State of the Union address for the genre--invaluable.

                        Book Description

Recent years have seen a spectacular rise of the New Age movement and an ever-increasing interest in its beliefs and manifestations. This fascinating work presents the first comprehensive analysis of New Age Religion and its historical backgrounds, thus providing a means of orientation in the bewildering variety of the movement. Making extensive use of primary sources, the author thematically analyses New Age beliefs from the perspective of the study of religions. While looking at the historical backgrounds of the movement, he convincingly argues that its foundations were laid by so-called western esoteric traditions during the Renaissance. Hanegraaff finally shows how the modern New Age movement emerged from the increasing secularization of those esoteric traditions during the nineteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and compelling research of new age religion.......2005-09-08

I have just finished reading this lengthy book after a month of heated night readings.
This one is really a milestone in the research of the new age phenomenon, as it is the first (and up until now the only) book to seriously and exhaustively research the variety of new age ideas, their inter-connectedness and their origins.

Haanegraaf doesn't leave the discussion on a sociological level, as other authors on the new age have frequently done. He isn't satisifed until he enters the core of every doctrine and theory and explains it thoroughly to the reader.
Haanegraaf covers an unusal amount of material over the 525 pages long primary text of the book. He presents ideas and comments about them briefly and concisely but also profoundly and always in an interesting and intelectually stimulating way.

The different observations and structures Haanegraaf presents in this work are bound to become a basis for future research of the new age phenomenon.

This is one of the best books i've read in a while, and a must for anyone interested in New Age.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......1999-06-22

This book is a MUST READ for any student of religious studies. Its provides a consolidation and analysis of the new age literature. Extensive use of references and footnotes - you won't be disappointed...

                                Book Description

This second installment includes valuable insight to the different avenues that today's Treasure Enthusiast can take to get to a successful level of Treasure Hunting. It covers activities as simple as dump digging and relic hunting, and as complex and interruptive as reading signs and symbols, or cache hunting. Electronic device discovery, and recovery methods are covered extensively, but this book also touches on several other insightful means of discovery. It takes a stab at understanding hundreds of years of adventurers, and explorers, in early American history, including both coastal and interior areas. The main emphasis of this book is on developing a conservative and long term approach to achieve success.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and inspiring.......2003-07-03

I loved this book. I was sick of all the fussy frilly horrors in most nursery books and loved the clear clean cool design of this. Jane Alexander offers practical advice and is particularly strong on the safety aspects of decorating (I hadn't realised how dangerous a lot of common furnishings and furniture are). But she really comes into her own on the psychological and spiritual aspects of creating a nest for your babe. I felt inspired to follow many of her lovely, simple, heartfelt ideas and I'm sure a lot of other moms would feel the same way. Yes, it's a small book but small is often beautiful and a baby's pretty small too. I have bought several for baby showers - they make a lovely little extra gift or a great part of a basket. Truly a little gem.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2003-05-20

This book is good if you are interested in a "new age" baby room. I thought it was useless. There were no great ideas and hardly any photos. Its a small book and not worth the money.

Our most popular fairy tales and nursery rhymes are based on ancient myths about the sun, the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, and summer and winter solstices. These myths span the globe and are thousands of years old, even dating to the late Ice Age and before. Why does Little Red Riding Hood wear red? What does eating an apple stand for in "Snow White"? Solstices and eclipses hold the answers to thse questions and more.

5 out of 5 stars A rich source of ancient thinking found in fairy tales........1999-02-02

Matt Kane has found a missing link between modern thinking and that of an older time, perhaps back 12,000 years and maybe a lot older than that.

People have always attempted to find answers to what they do not understand. So what do we do today to probe the mind of ancient man? Well, there's religion, beliefs, traditions and myth. All peoples had these beliefs along with myriads of deities. Much of current belief and practice has it's roots deep in antiquity.

The author has discovered another rich source of ancient thinking in fairy tales. The reason this book is so exciting is because it represents original thinking. Matt reveals that many fairy tales and nursery rhymes have their basis in ancient beliefs related to myths concerning the sun, moon and planets. Particularly important are solar and luner eclipses.

Heavens Unearthed has opened up a channel of understanding heretofore unrealized!

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating inquiry into the symbolism of nursery rhymes.......2000-03-28

Using a Jungian filter, and with reference to the works of Bruno Bettelheim ("The Uses of Enchantment"), Joseph Campbell ("The Hero With a Thousand Faces"), and others, Carter examines the embedded symbolism found in a sampling of children's nursery rhymes. Carter connects the rhymes' imagery with Jungian archetypes, and their meanings with the lessons found in the Tao Te Ching.

His analyses are thought-provoking. For example, the popular lullabye "Hush-a-bye Baby" employs the image of a child cradled in a tree. Historically, the tree has been a symbol of motherhood. The lullabye traces, in a few economical lines, the path of maturation: from infancy (child safely nestled in tree), to early childhood/preadolescence (the "winds" of change and emerging independence cause the child's cradle to rock, i.e., the tree's/mother's grip on the child to loosen), and finally adolescence/pre-adulthood (the bough breaks and the cradle falls, i.e., the child reaches independence and separateness from the mother).

In a related vein, Carter argues that in "Mary Had a Little Lamb," the lamb represents Mary's unconscious, child-like aspect, while the school (from which the lamb is barred), her emerging consciousness and entry into the "real," adult world. In the rhyme, the lamb waits for Mary to return from school, thus suggesting that although Mary will be able successfully to negotiate the "real" world, she will also stay connected with her creative/emotional side.

Carter weaves the strands of Taoist philosophy, Jungian psychology, and theories of childhood development into an innovative and provocative thesis, one which leaves ample room for disagreement, but which will inspire further study of these topics. One will never think about Little Bo Peep and her lost sheep in quite the same way again!

                                                  Book Description

MOBY:REPLAY - His Life and Times draws from exclusive and lengthy interviews conducted over the last seven years with Moby himself, as well as in-depth insights provided by those closest to him, including management, fellow band members, road crew and music writers. In this definitive look at Moby`s remarkable life, every aspect of his seminal career is covered at length, from his much reported Christian, vegan, non-drinking, non-drug-taking stance to his subsequent metamorphosis into the hard-drinking party animal he is today. Embracing skate punk to New York house, thrash metal to chilled ambience, soundtracks to down tempo blues, few artists have reflected the eclectic nature of our times quite like Moby. From the first rave hits to the multi-million selling album Play, Moby`s music soundtracks every walk of life. Replay - His Life and Times is the first and only vision of his compelling climb to the top of the music charts and offers the inside take on the enigma behind that success

(As previously printed in Mean Street Magazine)

In Martin James' "Replay," Moby aptly describes himself as the little man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz. He plays, mixes, samples; the audience jumps, dances, sweats. All this ecstasy-permeated excitement is created by one unlikely man: small, somber, and sober.
In "Replay," James draws from seven years of interviews with Moby to offer a look behind the curtain at the world's most famous raver. The book succeeds on several levels.
For those of us relatively new to the Moby phenomenon, "Replay" breaks it down from the beginning, starting with the birth of Richard Melville Hall in Harlem in 1965. The book offers definitive proof that this slight, bald-headed mass of genius and contradictions did not drop to the Earth from space.
For DJs and techies, Replay offers a chronicle of dance music from the `70s to the present, plus practical insight into the equipment Moby uses to create his huge sound (Cubase software).
Like any good bio, "Replay" offers scandal too. We learn that Moby's first musical purchase as a kid was the 7-inch single of Convoy, which he listened to in a continuous loop. We also learn that the once monk-like vegan, Christian and teetotaler has learned to not only rock the party but party himself, now indulging in champagne and a modicum of sexual adventures.
And for anyone who is awed by the power of Moby's music, the book offers a glimpse into his musical influences and development. The book also includes one hell of a discography.
It is James' reverence for music that represents "Replay's" greatest weakness as well as strength. He literally takes the reader to school in the first few chapters of the book with references to countless musical influences (Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV are among the less obscure). As the book charts the development of dance music in all its guises-disco, electro-funk, hip-hop, house, acid house, ambient- and all of its geographical permutations, the reader begins to feel they have unwittingly enrolled in Techno 101.
What keeps the reader turning the pages? Among other things, the words of Moby himself.
You earn something important in "Replay," if you haven't discovered it already: Moby was born to create dance music and according to Moby, we were all born to enjoy it:
"When you're born the first sound you hear is a screaming woman, unless your mother was anaesthetized. So your most primal sounds are, first of all the heartbeat, which is like the kick drum, and then a screaming woman. So we've all been listening to techno ever since we were born."
