    4 out of 5 stars NEW Worlds.......2006-11-03

This book is good. Is Grant Morrison anyway, and i don't care about Igor Kordey's art, i think it's just fine, besides, the story of Xorn is one of my favorites in the whole new x-men storyline.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2006-07-13

    This collects issues #127-133.

I read this in one sitting. I couldn't wait to get home and start the next one. Morrison's New X-Men graphic novels are like a book that you just can't put down.

The mutant called Dust makes her first appearance (ever) in this book, albeit briefly and she's not really in the next volume. There's also a teaser to upcoming relationship troubles regarding Scott Summers.

The only bad thing about this collection is Igor's art. (I didn't realize Siryn was involved in the action until several pages later because of his art.) The writing by Morrison is great. Rogue agents, Weapon X, and a trip to Genosha's remains are the main topics.

4 out of 5 stars The Mutants Come Out to Mixed Results.......2006-07-02

Grant Morrison did the unthinkable when he had Professor Charles Xavier outed as a mutant. For the first time since the X-Men's creation back in the 60's, people realized that the reason Prof. X campaigned so hard for mutant rights and human/mutant relations was that he himself was a mutant. Now, living his life without hiding his true nature, as well as the ability to walk due to mutant healer Xorn, he realizes that many people accept him and the X-Men more than ever due to their honesty, while other humans feel that he has lied to him all these years. Still, he counts the situation as an overall victory. However, humans are still fearful of mutants, especially since, a few issues back, they began to realize that they were on the road to extinction, while mutants would replace them as the dominant species on Earth.
In New Worlds, we see individual humans dealing with increasingly freakish mutants (the days of Beast's large appendages in his pre-furry form being the scariest thing related to being a mutant are LONG gone). On one of Xorn's first missions as an X-Man, he is asked to help stop a large mutant monster that supposedly ate a small boy. However, things aren't what they seem, and the conclusion of his mission causes him to question why humans are worth allying with. On the other hand, human governments have restarted their efforts to maintain humanity's presence on this planet by going back to the program that made Wolverine who he is today. Weapon X, the project that gave Wolverine metal claws and a blank memory, was merely the 10th (hence the X, as in Roman numeral 10) stage, and now the government is up to 12/XII. Jean Grey and Prof. X are taken hostage by a European mutant terrorist who tells them that he needs their help destroying Weapon XII, or it will destroy a European branch of Xavier's X-Corp.
The issues in New Worlds heavily focus on Grey and Xavier, leaving most of the other team members with little to do. However, Cyclops and Emma Frost are shown to begin the psychic affair that becomes a big part of Morrison's run. Never before has Scott Summers doubted that Jean was the woman for him, but now, with the presence of Frost, as well as his recent possession by the mutant terrorist Apocalypse, he begins to question if he still loves his wife the way he once did.
Also, the new students are further developed here, and the new, young Angel (a girl with fly wings) meets Archangel, the man who used to go by the codename Angel and was one of the founding members of the X-Men. The new students are detested by many of the older students, due to their bizarre powers and physique. Mutants have now become so common, that some begin to look down on others for being so incredibly different from them, which is strange, seeing as how they themselves are looked down on by humans.
This collection was very good, though not as good as the two preceeding it, and far from the best X-book I've read (that honor definitely goes to Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, though I haven't had a huge exposure to the X-Men). Still, it is entertaining, and serves as set-up for the following arcs.

    3 out of 5 stars Unfocused........2004-06-28

The third installment of Grant Morrisons run on the Xmen slows down the pace slightly as it tries to expand on certain plotlines. Scott begins to have an affair with Emma, Xorn tries to help a confused mutant, a dangerous threat is unleashed in France, Fantomex is introduced (UGH) and Polaris tries to cope with her fathers (Magneto) legacy. The story is quite interesting, unfortunatly the art isn't up to snuff. The storyline where the Xmen are attacked in a subway in France is atrociously drawn, too much is going on and the hideous art made it very hard to understand what exactly is happening. I wouldn't reccommend it. EP

5 out of 5 stars level of quality still tops.......2004-03-16

Grant Morrison has bred new life into the X-Men. The stories and characters are fleshed out, fresh, and kept interesting. I love what has been done here. The art is still as good as in the previous volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Science Fiction with soul.......2007-10-09

Let me start of by saying this book touched me. I didn't expect it to, but there you go.

Others have given good summaries of the plot, so I won't bother.

The science and the world that David Gerrold built were very interesting, but it was the family relationships that gave this book soul. It took a while to develop a sympathy for this family, but it was very powerful at the end. I think it touched me because it wasn't the happy ending we all expect at the end of a novel, with all the loose ends tied up. It was messy, just like real family relationships are.

Sometimes I forget just how good of a write Mr. Gerrold is.

I've just ordered the other two books in the trilogy, and can't wait to read how the boys do.

1 out of 5 stars Jerry Springer in space........2005-09-10

Where to begin? We have the unlikeable characters. The dithering father. He's divorced from a shrewish mother who seems to exist only as a caricature in the background. Eldest child, who could potentially be an interesting person, except that the only things we ever really find out about him are his sexual preferences and the fact that he's a lousy student. Middle child, who could be interesting if he'd ever stop feeling sorry for himself and youngest child who seems to be a never-ending temper tantrum on legs.

Believable? Yes, I've met people that could be the models for these characters. Interesting? Not really, unless you're also into the tabloids and "Divorce Court" on TV. Likeable? Not in the least.

Next we have the uninteresting story. Evil, paranoid mom tries to cut off dad's visitation because she thinks he's planning to kidnap the kids. Except that we're supposed to forget that she's right. Dad really is trying to kidnap the kids, and actually sell both himself and them into what is described in the book as "slavery". Kids stuck in the middle between two warring parents that seem to be willing to do absolutely anything to strike out at each other.

Ok, since the characters are one-dimensional and the story drags, we've got to add in some irrelevancies to get people to think that the story is daring, or brave, or something. Let's try mixing up the sexual preferences of some of the characters. I won't say which ones (although if you've read some of the other reviews, you'll already know). The fact that their sex lives have little to do with the story or even that those bits read as if they had been added in after the story was completed won't stop some folks from applauding the "courage" of the author for including them.

The few characters that are supposed to be the "bad guys" are simply trying to uphold law and decency. Yes, they have ulterior motives for doing so, but so what? One is trying to stop a huge multinational corporation from massive illegal smuggling, and another trying to stop a parent from kidnapping his children and selling them into slavery. Yes, these are the bad guys. The good guys want to give the kids the choice of becoming either street people or slaves on the moon.

Some authors develop worlds where I would like to live. Most create characters that I would like to know, either at my back in a fight or at the bar, over a beer. This world and these characters deserve each other. I'll be as far away as I can get.

4 out of 5 stars Before the Chtorr.......2004-02-19

This book is hard to classify but if you have read Gerrold's War Against The Chtorr books you will be familiar with the style.

The story concerns three brothers spending a visitation with their father. He suggests a trip to the Moon and, against all previous behavior patterns, actually seems to follow through on the idea.

Getting to the Moon involves using a space elevator located in Ecuador at Sheffield Clarke. This is one of two currently in operation.

But nothing is quite so simple. Mom thinks Dad is trying to kidnap the children. Where did Dad get the money? What about all of the strange characters who are interested in the family? Needless to say, it gets quite complex.

The whole story is seen through the eyes of the middle son (Charles or Chigger). Because of this, events and characters often seem more incidental than they really are.

The story is also fleshed out with loads of discussions on planetary economics, physics, biology, etc. There are also complications from the overcrowded Earth. Plagues are starting to spread over vast sections of the planet and there have been reports of giant pink caterpillars that can eat horses (Chtorr?).

Kids may star in this book, but it is really aimed at the thinking reader. This is not a fluff piece or an action yarn. But it is very entertaining and a good first piece to the series.

3 out of 5 stars There's no Jack in this Beanstalk.......2002-09-08

Back in the fifties Robert Heinlein pretty much perfected the science fiction 'juvenile' (which merely means that his protagonists were normally adolescents - not that the novels do not deal with difficult, complex, 'adult' themes and ideas). Few authors have had the temerity to write works that use the Heinlein model as their basis, but Gerrold has attempted it here.

As a starting point, Gerrold takes a very dysfunctional family consisting of three brothers, all of whom have various highly anti-social character traits, and their divorced parents, who are constantly squabbling over custody and visitation rights to their children. He places them in a reasonably near-term future, where the multi-national corporations have pretty much taken over, 17 billion people are voraciously consuming what little resources planet Earth still has, and the defining technological development is the 'beanstalk', a massive wire hung from geosynchronous orbit all the way down to the planet surface and extending upwards nearly as far for balance. The father, at the end of his wits and finances, decides to 'kidnap' his children and take them up the 'beanstalk' as the first part of a journey to the moon and beyond in an attempt to leave his troubles (and legal jurisdiction) behind.

The story is told from the viewpoint of the middle 13 year old brother, who feels 'left out', that his parents and brothers never really talk to him or deliver on their promises, leaving him cynical and withdrawn. As the story progresses, he begins to develop his own sense of responsibility for his actions and depend less on the 'that's not fair' type argument. Unfortunately, most of this development is somewhat hidden from the reader till near the very end of the book, where the statements he makes seem to almost come from nowhere, as too little of his underlying thinking has been previously shown. Starting as a complete techno-geek with few defining human characteristics, the eldest brother is only slowly developed, so that only at the end of the book does he come to the point where he seems like a real person worthy of your notice. The youngest brother starts as and remains a near cipher, a tool for showing the need for parental discipline and allowing brotherly responsibility to be exhibited.

Still, Gerrold is better in his characterizations than while trying to explain the technology of his world. While the ideas are good, sometimes exemplary, such as his concepts on the flow of various types of money, his exposition is too often dry, near academic in tone. Here he definitely suffers in comparison to Heinlein, who could write twenty page essays on the care and feeding of space suits and remain entertaining and continue to further his story line during the exposition. On the other hand, the courtroom scenes that Gerrold presents are just as good (and very similar in tone and action) as any of Heinlein's, and his societal ideas (such as being able to divorce your parents) are very much in the Heinlein tradition.

There are some items touched on here that Heinlein could never have gotten by the editors of his time, such as homosexuality (of both sexes) and certain bodily functions. While these items play a role in the story development, they are not gone into in any detail, though it might have made a better, deeper book if they had been. But with these items, it makes the book unsuitable for very young readers.

Even with these flaws, this is still a good, very readable book that brings the old Heinlein model into the world of today. Today's teens may find this book more relevant, more in tune with their world, than the older Heinlein works.

      5 out of 5 stars ..........2002-06-21

... He's not a musical genius, his dad wasn't an orchestra conductor, he's not a middle child, his parents were never divorced, he doesn't have a gay sibling, and he didn't come from a dysfunctional family. But he was a teenager once, if that counts. He also said that his only experience with custody issues was the adoption of his son, which he said was a lot of fun. (Read his book, The Martian Child.) Oh, and he said that the character of Howard the lawyer was based on a real lawyer who tried to hit him with a nuisance action, and made so many mistakes in his own preparation that eventually it became a joke. But I liked Jumping Off The Planet for two reasons. First, the people and their relationships seemed very real, so real that I can understand why some folks think the author had to be writing from experience. Second, I liked the courtroom scenes. When David Gerrold gets into a moral argument, it's always surprising. He gives me things to think about. In these books, the courtroom scenes are necessary as a way of demonstrating that teenagers are still under the control of adults, and that no matter what a kid does, right or wrong, eventually adults are going to decide what happens next. Yes, it would be nice if there were a nice neat ending where the good guys win and the bad guys get punished, but in real life, life goes on, and I think this is what Gerrold is trying to show, that each of these books is not a complete advenjture as much as it's one more step in the long journey of life.

        Book Description

Praying Christians are society's best revolutionaries. They engage in the most remarkable act a human can perform, and, in so doing, unleash God's sustaining power. In No Easy Road, Dick Eastman offers challenge, guidance, and encouragement to help believers on the sometimes difficult, though always rewarding, journey of prayer. This best-selling classic, originally published by Baker in 1971, tracks a Pilgrim's Progress-like progression down the road of prayer. Using stories from biblical times to today, it walks readers through the Peak of Unbelief, the Plateau of Intercession, the Mountain of Self-will, and more. Designed for all believers who seek to revitalize their prayer lives, it is also a pertinent resource for pastors, prayer leaders, missionaries, and others who wish to mobilize others to pray.

I do not know when I have read a novel so quickly. I read it quickly in order to send it off with my daughter who was headed to Africa to work with a missionary team and I wanted them to be able to read this book.

Those of us in ministry think that everything is automatic if we are "faithful" (whatever that is). Mrs. Elliot helps us focus on the God we serve in ministry and not on the idol of ministry itself. This is must reading for every missionary, ministry person or any Christian who has bought the line that says: "If you are faithful God must bless your work".

Pick up and read to the betterment of your soul and your relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars A book to know God more and to enjoy true freedom.......2005-04-29

This tremendous book must be read by all sincere christians who are trying to live a life pleasing to Jesus christ. Every one of us have our own fanciful idea of God which sometimes contradicts the Bible. This book will free us from all christian myths and will lead us towards a richer christian life.
Ellisabeth elliot shares her experiance and things she learned in this novel.
If you are a chritian missionary, pastor, or any worker this book must be read by you.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book of Fiction for All Christians.......2003-11-07

The only thing wrong with this book is that it is out of print. In The best thing about it is that it shows how important good Christian fiction is. In her own plucky style, Elisabeth Elliot shows what it means to be a real missionary. One of my favorite parts is when the missionary (Margaret) helps a not-so-helpful but well-meaning American visiting Ecuador realize that giving gospel tracts to South American Indians who can't read at all (let alone read Spanish) is less than helpful. Don't miss reading this book. Buy it and share it with those you love (including your pastor). You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars No Graven Image by Elizabeth Elliot.......1999-12-10

This book is an awesome representation of missionary life. A young, unmarried, woman named Margarat is working as a Bible translator to the Quicha Indians in the mountains of Ecuador. Most of the action takes place in her mind, where she tells you about her previous ideas of missionary work. The end is astonishing and will leave you with a new view on how God works. This book makes you search your soul for what you believe and why. It draws you into the story line, as if you were actually in the mountains of Ecuador with her! I highly recommend it for anyone planning to go into missions or just with an interest in missions.

                          5 out of 5 stars Longtime Pal.......2007-09-02

This book is a beast in itself, HEAVY, but filled with so many things ! I remember being in my freshman year of High school and bought a copy of this for myself and for my cooking teacher! (i wonder if she still has hers) From pasta and pizza dough recipes, lasagna, appetizers, soups, you name it, its in here! Organized by food genre and a full alphabetized index in the back, it makes what you are searching for a breeze. Even tho the book itself was published more than 20 yrs ago, you'll still find many things you can make today that you can find you own ways to update to make more "2007" Full color photos for some of the recipes, not the new hi digitized like we are accustomed to today, but still very appetizing. Get it, you'll definitely keep it on your shelf for years and incorporate it into your kitchen meals.

It's a weapon, it's HUGE. Basics to advanced cooking skills are both covered. The recipes are clear, the pictures are plentiful and fantastic. I have given 3 copies of this book as gifts, everyone loves it. It's one of those rare cookbooks that has creative ideas, but not so far out of the box you wonder what they were thinking. Lot's of down home food too....it covers it all from scrambling an egg to making a mousse. I own probably 100 cookbooks and this one is hands down my favorite

5 out of 5 stars My favorite all time cookbook.......2006-09-19

I recieved my first copy of this book 20 years ago and used it until the cover was falling apart. I ordered another from Amazon and I still love this book. The recipes are accurate and taste great.
It has everything from Quiche to sheppards pie and several icing recipes. The pictures are also wonderful and inspire me to cook even more.

I have had this book for over 12 years and still refer to it. My family and I have some favorite recipes from it. I am buying one for my niece now.

I'm going to keep this book, but I was initially disappointed by the dated look of the examples. Even though it was printed in 1995 it looks as if the styles are more likely culled from Threads articles from the decade before... making them something like twenty years old. But the techniques are sound, as with all Taunton books. I am especially intrigued by an article on felted fabric using a double needle stitch to create an aran-look sweater.

                                              1 out of 5 stars don't you dare bother!.......2004-08-24

this is as interesting as flipping through the magazine. i have owned it for years and never look at it. it is only a compilation of old articles that appeared in threads - some useless, some helpful. there is no organization to it whatsoever. don't bother!

Urban Graphics Entertainment, by Wayne Hunt, is an excellent resource for professionals and educators in the field of graphic design and interactive signage. Filled with crisply photographed examples of the latest in interactive graphics, traffic signage, exhibition design and point of purchase visual media, Urban Graphics Entertainment builds a strong case for such works as a free-standing area of specialization for designers of all backgrounds.

As with most sample/idea books targeted towards graphic designers, UGE enthralls the reader with vivid imagery but does so without overwhelming the reader. Each example is presented with descriptive text providing insight into why and how the design came about. While it is not a thorough revelation of the design process that went into creating each example, it is enough to allow the reader to develop some understanding of the designers intent and if they were successful.

Signage and interactive kiosks related to entertainment and sports venues are the one of the fastest growing areas of interests among graphic designers - and it is easy to see why after reading this book. A must have for practicing graphic designers and students.

This is a standard Jagger bio that promises to be more. It's not about any "secret life" that the title suggests. If you've read other Jagger bios, you'll just get more of the same here. And for a bio that suggests it will deliver new stuff about Jagger's sex life, it is ineptly researched. This bio says, basically, "there have been rumours of Jagger having gay affairs, but there is no evidence of it." Well, I have an old "Interview" magazine that includes an interview Jagger gave when promoting his first solo album. And in that interview Jagger admits to having had a number of gay dalliances. None of them serious, he points out. And he laughed about it. No big deal. Which it isn't. But why didn't this author track that interview down, and find out about Mick's commments in it. Especially since she promises an indepth look at his sex life. Lazy, lazy research.
