    Book Description

On January 15, 1947, the tortured and mutilated body of Elizabeth Short, the" Black Dahlia," was found in a vacant lot in Hollywood. At the time, the brutality of her murder and the intrigue that surrounded it sparked one of the greatest manhunts in California history. In this fictionalized treatment of the actual investigation, Bucky Bleichert and Lee Blanchard, both L.A. cops obsessed with the Black Dahlia, journey through the seamy underside of Hollywood to the core of the dead girl's twisted life.

          Book Description

A Crown Disowned is the third volume of the cycle of Oak, Yew, Ash, and Rowan that began with To the King a Daughter and continued in Knight or Knave. The earth shakes and splits as the forces from the North draw nearer. The Ice Dragon Riders are speaking to the land, and more fire mountains awaken in the Bog. Rohan seeks to join forces with Tusser, leader of the Bog-folk, as Queen Ysa raises an army to clear the Bog.War draws closer until even the Queen cannot deny it any longer. Raids from the north increase, and, for the first time, the Riders of the Ice Dragons appear. It is time for the Queen to give up her game of pitting one faction against another. Four great armies are assembled to march under the same banner. Though they do not represent the Four Trees, they nevertheless see this as a good omen. Many good men from all four armies fall in battle, yet the Great Foulness is still at large. Is the combined might of the four powers enough to free the land from evil?

I enjoyed the book greatly. Not sure what the May 28 reviewer was thinking.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor offering; much worse than previous books in series.......2003-05-28

... This book, "A Crown Disowned," suffers from too many plot discontinuities, bad characterization, very cardboard, wooden dialogue, and manages to do something I never had done in all the years I've read books -- made me want to throw a book Andre Norton has contributed to across the room.

Let me try and explain. Basically, in the previous two books, Ashen was a sympathetic character (although toward the end of book two, she started becoming less sympathetic, as she did not like her stepson's girlfriend). However, in this book, Ashen seems rather pointless. The action doesn't really revolve around her -- it revolves around Queen Ysa, who at best is a tragic heroine. Ashen's romance, which was one of the focal points of the first two books, is an afterthought here, and her daughter's romance with the young boy-king seemed tacked-on hurriedly.

Plus, there's no real sense of how time is passing in this book. There seem to be very few time referents, which is extremely strange. I thought it was probably due to poor editing or the rush to get this book to the printers, as I couldn't understand why else it'd happen.

The big confrontation loses all steam once the big bad Flavielle is gone, and considering she's taken out more by incompetence than anything, that's a major waste of resources. Personally, I'd rather have seen someone deliberately succeed in taking her out, rather than the drugged, half-feverish way it's done in this book.

Basically, I didn't care about any of the characters at the end of this book, and I was glad the book was over (even though I'd really looked forward to it, and had enjoyed the first two books of the series). Like I said, it's probably one of the worst books I've read in a long time, and I regret paying hardcover price for it.

If I could give this less than one star, I would, despite my high respect for Ms. Norton and her stature in the field.

4 out of 5 stars The Foulness Strikes.......2002-12-29

A Crown Disowned is the third novel in the Cycle of Oak, Yew, Ash, and Rowan and the last in the trilogy. The previous volume ended with King Peres on the throne, Ashen married to Gaurin, Rohan knighted, Anamara mad and lost in the Bog, and the dowager Ysa learning that the long awaited invasion from the north has begun.

This novel begins with a meeting between Rohan and the Bog headman Tusser in the remains of the city of Galinth. While debating the fine points of alliance, they are interrupted by a group of men, hired by the dowager Ysa, who are trying to burn up the Bog. After fighting off the Outlanders, they discover Anamara in the ruins and take her to Zazar for healing.

Despite the severity of the situation, the dowager clings to her plots and magic. Throughout most of the book, she tries to control everybody. One of the funniest places in the book is when the dowager Ysa is told that Rannore has married Lathrom, the former Sergeant. Of course, Ysa is scandalized that Rannore has married well below her station and is frustrated to learn that her son, King Peres, has knighted Lathrom and has granted him lands and properties.

Meanwhile, Ashen studies the magic tome found by Esander, Zazar prepares for a summons, and the Foul One uses Flavielle to set up a trap. In the north, the armies of the Rendelians, Nordorn, Sea-Rovers and Bog-folk fight Ice Dragons, Frydans and renegade humans. The Unnatural cold is as deadly as the enemy.

The ultimate confrontation is not obvious, but is satisfying, and the aftermath is even more so. Recommended for all fans of Andre Norton and Sasha Miller as well as anyone who likes adventure fantasy with a touch of romance.

4 out of 5 stars exciting sword and sorcery tale.......2002-10-18

The human, inhuman and ice dragon armies of the Great One march south causing havoc to an already besieged Rendelsham and the other southern lands already struggling with hostile frozen precipitation. To survive the onslaught, the four great houses of the south must unite in an alliance against the seemingly invincible Great One. However, a key player, dowager Queen Ysa, appears in denial as she continues to divide rather than unite by pushing the rivalries between the houses.

However, even Ysa ultimately realizes the danger though it may prove to late when the Ice Dragons begin spewing out frozen waste at its southern targets. Rohan and his Sea Rovers with their ships try to unite with the Nodors and the Bog-folk in an uneasy alliance. Unbeknownst to the desperate southern alliance is the Great One's most loyal servant is a sorceress who has seduced Rendelsham's High Marshal into leading Rohan and his allies into a trap. If they escape, they still must find a way to defeat the Great One's superior armies, unconquerable ice dragons, and ultimately yield magic that none seem to possess to crush the Great One.

The third Cycle of Oak, Yew, Ash, and Rowan novel, A CROWN DISOWNED is an exciting sword and sorcery tale though the story line provides little new from the previous two novels of this entertaining series. The fantasy contains numerous subplots focusing on war, intrigue, and betrayal, albeit the typical fare for an S&S novel. Still the cast engages the reader especially the enchanting magic gathering the myriad of fans of Andre Norton and Sasha Miller into the fold of a fine finale.

                5 out of 5 stars Mathiessen on a Motorcycle.......2004-07-08

What a shockingly delightful and profoundly moving book! Not only is Bealby a highly accomplished adventure motorcyclist, he proves to be a most estimable writer -- call him Mathiessen on a motorcycle. I've read plenty of ham-handed motorcycle adventure accounts; this one is of the highest caliber, on par with Robert Fulton Jr.'s "One Man Caravan."

Bealby chronicles his heroic odyssey on a Yamaha Tenere through unforgiving regions of Africa with humility and gratitude. You'll find no chest-beating or tedious complaints here. The work is gorgeously written, richly textured, and acutely observant of both man and nature. Seductive, sensory, lyrical, and rhapsodic, this book immerses you in exotic -- even surreal -- territory with superb grace. Motorcyclist or not, you will revel in this awesome adventure.

Proving his literary virtuosity, Bealby expertly weaves the tragic tale of the death of his beloved Mel throughout his ultimately cathartic and redemptive account. A truly magical work. Buy it. Three cheers to Jonny Bealby!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Motorcycle Adventure Tale.......2003-01-03

There are many books in the motorcycle adventure travel genre, but few have been written by someone who is a good writer. Jonny Bealby does a great job of relating his journey across Africa from the northern deserts to the tropical jungles on a Yamaha Tenere with an appropriate mix of story telling, philosophy, and motorcycling. This book is the same league as "Obsessions Die Hard" by Ed Culberson in terms of adventure, entertainment and readability. Highly recommended for the armchair adventurer!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best motorcycle travel stories i've read!.......2002-10-25

I've read a lot of motorcycle travel stories, and done sone travelling myself in africa on a motorcycle. But this story is a great novel and a great journey. Better than e.g. Jupiters Travels.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for bikers!.......2000-06-16

I have two main hobbies, off road motorcycling and reading, so when i bought RUNNING WITH THE MOON, i knew i was onto a winner and would enjoy it even before i had turned a page. From the tragic prologue to the epilogue after his incredible journey is over this book is a real rollercoaster of emotions (sorry about the cliche , but its true). You almost feel like you were there, and i wished i could have been to assist him when the bike got bogged down in thigh high water filled jungle tracks ,i know from experience what its like to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken down bike. But then again there is a BIG difference between the middle of nowhere in the Yorkshire Dales, and the middle of nowhere in the Congo!(no gorillas in Yorkshire!). I also wanted to buy him a drink to cheer him up when he was stood up in Cairo, although that did eventually have a happy outcome. Initially i bought this book because of my interest in motorcycles, but non bikers dont be put off, i can heartily recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Uncovering Africa through the eyes of a lonesome traveller.......2000-04-27

"Running with the Moon," an autobiography by JonnyBealby recounts the adventures of a man on a motorbike travellingthrough Africa in hopes of finding insights and answers to his lifeafter the sudden death of his fiance. What makes this book so notable is the fact that a journey of the sort undertaken by the author would be impossible in todays age due to the political state of the majority of African countries in the present. After the death of his fiance while travelling in Kashmir Jonny Bealby returns to an England which is not the same. Day to day life having changed into a struggle of lost hopes and loves. Challenged by this austere new world and compounded by his confusion he decides to undertake a journey across Africa apon a motorcycle. Accompanied by his best friend Neil, the two prepare for their journey and set off, a Yamaha Tenere under each...A fascinating insight into the beauty and sadness of a man who uncovers Africa for the reader and once again reclaims the peices of himself lost to him by past tragedies. Defianitely a must for the reader with a soft side for travel and adventure.

                            Book Description

1915. English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, famous for his works of science fiction, Wells's best-known books are The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The War Of The Worlds. In Bealby a Holiday we are introduced to young Bealby who was determined he would not be a servant. So opposed was he to the very idea that he ranted and rallied against his mother and quite wore her down with his protests. Tantrums aside, the young boy had to accept his lot in life-at least for the time being. And so he was sent to Shonts, the big country house, to work as a steward's boy. But Bealby hadn't accounted for a host of guests arriving for the weekend, and certainly nothing in his short life had prepared him for the arrival of the eloquent, but totally eccentric Lord Chancellor. This was to be a position that Bealby would not soon forget. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

This book has been a great help. I am in the early stages of infertility. My husband and I have had so much pressure from family, friends and the church about when are you going to have a baby. I laughed and cried while reading it. Finally, I said to myself someone understands. Even if you just started on this "journey of infertility", I recommend it. The author does not leave you hopeless. She helped me to remember what is important while still validating my feelings. I cannot make having a baby my "idol". God is still good!

                              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource.......2004-12-16

This book helped me immensely in bringing closure to our infertility journey and helped me find peace. It answered and helped explain many of the issues I had been dealing with while struggling with infertility. I definitely recommend it to anyone who asks God, "Why me?" However, I would like to add that you may want to wait to read it until you are near the end of infertility treatments and considering other options. It is very straightforward and may upset someone who is just starting off dealing with infertility.

I read this book at a very low point in my fertility journey. After finishing this book, I felt like the the author left no room for God's power to work through any fertility situation.

I understand that she never conceived, and decided to adopt, but not all of us are there. I still feel that God can bring me a baby, even if I get to be as old as Sarah! I guess I didn't feel the same from this author.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2003-10-06

This book is a must read for any couple coping with the trial of infertility. I was able to do just what the title said, find God's peace! Chapter by chapter I learned important information, grappled with the hurt and pain and found some of the answers I had been looking for. Now I know that I'm not alone and that others have gone through just what I am, and that there is hope and peace to be found. I am recommending this book to others I meet who are going through infertility.

For her birthday last year, I gave my niece some novelty soaps and she really took a liking to them. It turns out she also loves craft projects and I was looking for a way to combine these two interests into a present for Christmas. I went to a local crafting store and they recommended this book as a way to get into melt and pour soap making. My niece absolutely loves the projects! She and her mom worked together to make the snow dome soaps as favors for a friend's birthday party and they were a big hit. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get into this craft.

I was disappointed with this book. I have purchased a lot of soap books and found this to be the only one i havent used. It is really only for beginers with no challenges for someone trying to spread their wings. It has melt & pour recipes only. one recipe was to use a finshed bar of soap and told you how to put a tattoo transfer on it. That was it. Inspiring!

Having read Ms. Sugarman's website for some time now, I had been waiting with anticipation for the release of her book. I was not disappointed. As someone who has just begun to explore her crafty side, "Sassy Soaps" has step by step instructions for the beginner. But there are also many creative ideas and unique projects that a more experienced person would enjoy. Why spend outrageous sums of money for the overpriced soaps you see at boutiques and specialty stores when you can make it in your own home at a fraction of the cost? So if you are looking for a soapmaking book that has an excellent mix of basic instructions for the uninitiated and more advanced concepts/ideas for people with more experience, this is the book for you. A+

When I first saw this book, I was surprised just how fresh these projects are! This isn't the typical "here's a bar...go wash with it" kind of book. The soaps you make in this one are definitely sassy. Cell phone soap -- how 21st century is that? I love it! I was getting one book for a friend who's into soap, but I'm going to get one for me, too.

Sassy Soaps takes soapmaking to the next level.

                                    Book Description

The Conclusive Argument of God is the master work of Shah Wali Allah of Delhi (1762), considered to be the most important Muslim thinker of pre-modern South Asia. This work, originally written in Arabic, represents a synthesis of the Islamic intellectual disciplines authoritative in the 18th century. In order to argue for the rational, ethical, and spiritual basis for the implementation of the hadith injunctions of the Prophet Muhammad, Shah Wali Allah develops a cohesive schema of the metaphysical, psychological, and social knowledge of his time. This work provides an extensive and detailed picture of Muslim theology and interpretive strategies on the eve of the modern period and is still evoked by numerous contemporary Islamic movements.

English readers can begin to explore Islamic texts directly. Shah Wali Allah writes in a difficult style; Hermansen smoothes the way considerably. The biographical introduction is helpful. Rather than try to re-interpret Islam for themselves, modern Muslims should spend their time and energy learning from those who used their monumental knowledge and experience for the task. Another layer to add to the complexity of "orthodox Sufism." Paperback in the works???
