Book Description
"A wonderful mix of magical realism and wordplay that has a similar tone to Marquez at his best. Couto writes in an idiom all his own that feels authentically African."-Ink
In Mozambique after the end of the civil war, local soldiers have been unaccountably blown up. When it begins to happen to UN peacekeepers, a high-level delegation visits the village of Tizangara to initiate an investigation. As the UN investigation unfolds, Mia Couto brilliantly shows how the perceptions of events both inside and outside the country are altered when interpreted from an African perspective.
Mia Couto was born in 1955 in Mozambique and is the most prominent Portuguese-speaking African writer. He now lives in Maputo, where he manages the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

Not as good as his other books.......2007-07-02
I am a great fan of Mia Couto's books. I love how he is able to take you deep within the social fabric of life in Mozambique this book however I felt fell short. The story is a little confusing and in many parts, pointless it is only at the conclusion of the book you have any idea of what the story was realy about. Unlike his other novels the characters have no appeal nor does the story have anything distinct to make it stand out from his other books; it is almost as if he was running out of ideas with this one.
The horrific wars that took place in Mozambique have been largely overlooked in the West especially the aftermath, a country scared by mines. Something which makes Mia Coutos books all the more powerful.
Try, voices made night. A collection of short stories some of which almost follow the same lines of this one but a whole lot better.

Dragon Prince.......2007-02-13
I dont care what anyone says the Dragon Prince books are a wonderful tale. Anyone and I do mean anyone would enjoy the entire tale of the prince and his witch wife. Melanie has woven such magic in these books. So if you get the chance get the entire series. Sit back with a cup of coffee and a tissue and enjoy.
A Must Read!!.......2005-12-17
Skybowl was a great ending to the awesome Dragon Star series! You must first, of course, read the Dragon Prince series or risk being utterly confused and regretting not doing it later on, but still a great read. Melanie Rawn created characters that are complicated and indepth and a fantastic world to live in. Simply, this book and series is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy.
Be Warned!!: other reviews have spoilers that will really hurt the story if you know before hand. Do yourself a favor and tred lightly.
Perfect ending.......2005-05-17
I loved this book a lot and reread the ending several times per year, just because of the spectacular way in which it was written. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers in that the two previous books were not as well written, especially after having enjoyed the first series so much. But this book was definitely worth plowing through the other two and it made the ending all the more poignant and dramatic. Just those last couple of chapters would have gotten six stars from me!
Not As Good As The Othes.......2005-03-18
I personally didn't like this book as much for the others. The ending had a lot to be desired and what's more I think Melanie has a tendency of being a little to hard on the male characters of her series. It strikes me as I've read all 6 of the books of this particular setting that she makes her male characters way too feminine. Not all of course and I also feel that she has this tendency of putting her own political views to much in these books.
My least favorite characters in the series was Ostvel and Alison, I couldn't see what Andry saw in her at all. Nothing was all that strong about her and she ran away at the slightest hint of power. Ostvel just gets on my nerves because he's just too perfectly annoying!
What's more is that I've noticed something that I've disliked about this particular series.
1. Sionell was way to harsh on Pol and seemed to blame him for what was also her own decision as well.
2. Melanie Rawn is more than a little sexist. I found very few female characters making any mistakes at all, not to mention more often than not I found that I'd never respond like they do to the way that the male characters respond. Maybe it's just me however since I don't know every guy out their. Even if a guy made the right decision he'd be attacked while if the woman made a decission that was actually wrong she would be admired.
3. Some of the characters in this overly long book should have been cut out. I honestly had no interest in most of them and found that it distracted me from characters that I really liked, Andry and Pol.
Worth reading the first 2 torturous books.......2002-12-31
I bought all three books together in this series without reading the Dragon-Prince series. I gave the first book a miserable rating because I was very confused. All the chars were alien to me. But becasue I had bought the books and i didn't want to waste my money, I forced myself to plow through to the end.
I must say it was worth my time and agony because the climax at the end of the book was incredible. It was so brilliant that I could almost feel the sunrunner web spinning around me as i read. It helped also that I got to like Andry in all my muddled reading and he was the only one who stuck in my mind. His death upsetted me but it's one of the things that glued me to the book.
The reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of all the trouble i took in reading the first two books. They are not bad but I made the mistake of not reading the Dragon Prince series. Or I could blame Rawn for not making it book 4,5,6 instead.

A wonderful adventure.......1998-08-31
I was thrilled with this book and the one before it. Ms Rivers truly has a gift of putting one into the adventure of the scene. If you like a women centered book where the heroines are women warriors with mystical powers, a book that is full of mystery, high adventure, and courage. You must start with Journey to Zelindar : The Personal Account of Sair of Semasi, then Daughters of the Great Star, and The Hydra. Her next book if not the final one I believe is called The Redline of Yarmald. Hurry up Diana your fans are chomping at the bit!!!
OUTSTANDING. COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!.......1998-05-10
I LOVE THIS BOOK. I'VE READ ALL HER BOOKS AND CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. DIANA HAS THE ABILITY TO TAKE THE READER TO PLACES WE CAN ONLY DREAM ABOUT.

an interesting feminist perspective on biblical matriarchs.......2000-06-15
This book is also known as HAGAR THE EGYPTIAN. Since there wasn't a good explanation of this book on this page, I am adding the following. Teubal, an independent biblical scholar in her seventies, may be best known for her development of the Jewish ritual of Simchat Hochmah, Celebrating the Wisdom of Age, something like a bar/bat mitvah for those who reach their Golden and Platinum years. In this scholarly feminist study of the Genesis stories of Sarah and Hagar, she explores the matriarchal tradition in the Bible, which may have been covered over by succeeding patriarchal traditions. Sarah and Hagar are given an identity other than just being sleeping partners of Abraham. She also explores what the female led religious traditions were. This may be of interest to those seeking to create female-led rituals or New Moon ceremonies. Who was Hagar, the matriarch for Ishmaelic peoples and Islam? Was she a slave to Abraham and Sarah? Was she an empowered desert figure? Was she a gift to Sarah from a Pharaoah from their sojourn in Egypt? Was she a lady-in-waiting to Sarah, who was actually a priestess? What was the custom of surrogate motherhood in the Ancient Near East? These are some of the issues explored by Teubal
Should make everybody equally happy.......1999-07-13
The author's premise should make everyone equally happy since she makes Isaac the son of Abimelech, Ishael the son of an unknown father and mother, Hagar the mother of an unknown child, and Ketubah's children the only named children of Abraham.

Book Description
Those bristly cactus spines are guarding something really good to eat. Like chocolate, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and chile, prickly pear cacti are one of the true treasures of the Americas. As a food, prickly pear is delicious, nutritious, and increasingly believed to be medicinal. Native Americans have enjoyed it for thousands of years, but transplants now flourish worldwide, particularly around the Mediterranean.
But how do you transform a live pincushion into a delicious smoothie, cool salad, or a pie as pink and airy as the desert dawn?
In her unique, beautiful cookbook Carolyn Niethammer has collected 56 enticing international recipes for the succulent fruit and tender green pads (or "nopalitos") of the prickly pear. A wild-food expert and master cook, she guides readers all the way from cactus patch to casserole, from easy spine removal techniques to Prickly Pear Barbecue Shrimp with Roasted Corn and Black Bean Relish. Other highlights of this marvelous collection are such simple yet sensational delights as Easy Nopalito Salsa, Sabra Soufflé, Chicken Yucatán, Prickly Pear Gelato, Prickly Pear Kuchen, and Prickly Pear Wine. 24 color photographs.

An Asset to Accessories Collectors.......2000-08-07
Upon opening this guide, Rupp demonstrates immediately why it is so essential to have this book in your library. From the Table of Contents page, all the way through to the Epilogue, Rupp presents the reader with 412 of the clearest, most colorful photos of Barbie doll accessories made from 1961-1995. With each picture, a caption is provided desribing these treasures with dates they were copyrighted, and other interesting tidbits that some of us have forgotten (i.e. Sear's exclusive, working escalators, even product I.D. numbers). Cases, houses, paper dolls, and colognes are covered. There's enough here to provide any child or fan of the 70's and 80's with lots of opportunities to reminisce and learn. Rupp has done a fantastic job. One look through this book will have you exclaiming, "Wow! I had that!" An excellent source of entertainment and education.
Book Description
The rigging of period ship models is arguably the most complex and daunting task for the modeler. An eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile upon mile of rigging, over 1,000 blocks, and acres of canvas. To reduce the rigging in scale and yet retain an accurate representation is a formidable undertaking. After studying numerous eighteenth-century museum models, the author has drawn some four hundred diagrams which clearly show how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards, and sails. Each drawing deals with only one particular aspect and is accompanied by a logical and straight forward narrative. For example, the fore deadeyes and channels are shown before the shrouds are added, and these are depicted before the ratlines are added. Whether a model maker needs to rig a whole ship or just requires information on one aspect, it is all here in this beautifully produced volume that no modeler of period ships should be without.

books by Lennart Petersson.......2007-08-31
I wish I had these two books Square rigging and fore and aft rigging fifty years ago when I got involved in building and rigging all types of sailing ships from cat boats to clipper ships and other multi masted sailing ships. The detail makes a lot of thing easier to duplicate and enhance ship model building highly recommended and essential to the novice and intermediate model, may even help some of us older folks
Well worth obtaining.......2007-07-25
Lennarth Petersson's "Rigging Period Ship Models" is pure gold for the modeller.
Even an unfortunate illiterate can follow along to produce accurate rigging.
The only text in the volume is a Table of Contents, a one page Introduction by the author (explaining why he chose the late 18th century British frigate 'Melampus' for his illustrations) and an Index in the rear of the book. The remainder of the volume consists solely of three dimensional illustrations annotated with call-outs.
Unlike other books on rigging, each page illustrates with clear line drawings one part of the ships rigging. As there is no text, there is no need to page hop between text and illustration. These illustrations make it easy for the reader to understand how each part of the rigging was to function and how it was rigged.
I would recommend the modeller use a copier on the particular page showing the rigging he is trying to model. In such fashion, he would have the illustration always handy on or near his workbench.
This book represents money well spent by the modeller. I highly recommend it.

Excellent!!.......2003-01-18
Boy, I wish I'd got this first, instead of some other books - this is just brilliant.
This book does just what its title says, teaches you in oh-so-easy steps how to rig a period ship. It makes no pretence at describing the different sizes of rigging and blocks (other books provide that info), but it does tell you exactly where each line is attached, which blocks it runs through, and, most importantly, where it is belayed ... in full-page, easy-to-understand line drawings, with all extraneous detail removed, and call-outs showing which is what. As one browses through, it all becomes clear ... rigging is not arbitrary, there are rules, and they make real sense when presented in this accessible manner.
The body of the book has ONE page of text - the rest is ALL graphics - brilliant!
In another review, I complained about that book's lack of clarity on belaying-points; this book tackles that problem in spades!
Anyone requiring a book on accurate routing of running and standing rigging need look no further - gets my 5 stars!
If You're a Model Ship Builder, Here's Another Must Have.......2002-08-16
What I REALLY liked about this book, to get right to it, is that I understood every direction immediately. Now, you need to know that there are hardly any words in this book!!! That's right, it's basically just a picture book of one specific line or line set. The drawings show you where the line runs, where it's tied off, how it's tied off, and that's all!! It's great! No complicated wordy instructions to translate, just the lines, clear and easy.
The ship that Mr. Petersson uses for his example is the HMS Melampus, an English frigate (36 guns, 18 pounder). By using his drawings, you'll get to know the finer points for that period, but take care here. If you are building a "Mayflower" (as I am now) or a "Victory", "Wasa", or "San Felipe" you'll need to make a few adjustments in your building from the drawings. Just don't copy the picture, match the lines purpose to your particular vessel, if that vessel even had that line.
Great reference, and you should have one. Thanks Mr. Petersson, who by the way lives in Sweden!!
Rigging info at its best........2002-01-21
Well here we go again, another book putting me closer and closer to discarding the instructions that came with my kit. For a model builder, life would be difficult without this book. Every rigging line is right there in front of your eyes. Just for clarification, there are no step by step instructions just complete drawings of rigging sequences. All lines are labeled for you on there perspective drawings and there is a set of excellent belaying plans for you near the end of the book. No reading is necessary, just looking. I wondered about its price tag for a book with only drawings but soon realized that all this info in one source was available no where else. Well designed and an informative resource.
